Microsoft extends access to Minecraft: Education Edition and resources to support remote learning

how to make your own account in minecraft education edition

As COVID-19 concerns prompt school closures around the world, many educators are turning to remote learning to keep students engaged. To help teachers and students stay connected to the classroom, Minecraft: Education Edition is now available through June 2020 for all educators and learners who have a valid Office 365 Education account. Please fill out this form to verify your account and request access to Minecraft.

We have also compiled a special Minecraft remote learning toolkit , which includes more than 50 lessons, STEM curriculum and project-based learning activities so educators can use Minecraft: Education Edition with their students whether they are in school, at home or in another remote learning environment.

Features like classroom multiplayer allow students to collaborate on projects in their Minecraft worlds, building, planning, learning and even chatting as they work together. (Download this how-to guide for using Multiplayer Mode.) When they are ready to document their work and submit their projects, students can use tools like the Camera and Book & Quill to take screenshots, write about their work and export their in-game portfolios as PDF.

“Distance learning requires students to be engaged in content in news ways,” explains educator and Minecraft certified trainer Becky Keene. “As they work remotely, they need to have activities and environments that motivate them to learn. Minecraft supports almost any content area, and students can show me their learning without missing a beat!”

When students collaborate remotely in Minecraft: Education Edition, it presents new opportunities for them to build communication and problem-solving skills together. Mark Henkels, a Minecraft educator in New York, says, “It’s the social interaction that really is a major part of why the game is so popular and great. And that social interaction is what makes the game such a great educational environment.”

Here’s how to setup Minecraft: Education Edition for your device or school:

  • First, check here to see if your school account is eligible.
  • If you have a valid O365 EDU account, fill out this form to request access to Minecraft: Education Edition through June 2020.
  • Download Minecraft: Education Edition for Windows, Mac or iPad.

If you do not have a valid O365 EDU account, you can still download and try a free demo lesson on Windows, Mac or iPad. Learn about other Minecraft distance learning resources here .

Explore free lessons, online training and distance learning projects for Minecraft: Education Edition:

  • Explore lessons in STEM, language arts, history and more in the remote learning toolkit , such as modelling plant and animal cells, building historical monuments and using coding to design a garden.
  • Join the 2020 Minecraft Education Challenge with your students using a customizable toolkit and solve real-world sustainability and inclusion challenges.
  • Take a free introductory online course for educators on the Microsoft Education Community (MEC) and check out this Starter Guide to learn the basics of teaching with Minecraft: Education Edition.
  • Check out these build challenges for fun, fast-paced and creative activities to engage your students in STEM and storytelling.
  • Learn how to use different features for game setup, assessment and classroom management with this YouTube video playlist .

Educational content available for Minecraft Bedrock:

We recently announced a new category of educational worlds for Minecraft players everywhere in the Minecraft Marketplace to support families during school closures. This new Education Collection features worlds that you can play with your kids and family, including work by creators Everbloom, Jigarbov, Lifeboat, Razzleberries, The World Foundry, Blockworks and Imagiverse! All of these worlds are free to download through June 30, 2020. Anyone with Minecraft for Bedrock can find these worlds by launching Minecraft and visiting the in-game store.

While there’s no quick fix for major disruptions like unexpected school closures, we hope these resources will support educators and students navigate staying connected and engaged in learning. Please feel free to share advice on remote teaching and learning with the Minecraft: Education Edition community on Twitter or Facebook .

You can find more distance and remote learning resources from Microsoft Education here to support IT, educators, staff and students, including free online classrooms in Teams and resources for schools and families to stay connected and share stories via Flipgrid .

How to Create a Minecraft Account

Last Updated: July 30, 2023 Tested

This wikiHow teaches you how to create a new Minecraft account. As of early 2021, signing up for an official Minecraft account means you'll need to create a Microsoft (Xbox) account. [1] X Research source Once you sign up for a free Microsoft account, you can use that account anywhere you play Minecraft. Having an account is not required if you are playing on a Nintendo Switch or Sony PlayStation, but if you choose to create one, you'll be able to play against people using other platforms.

Creating a Microsoft Account for Minecraft

Step 1 Go https://www.minecraft.net in...

  • If you already have a Microsoft account (this includes Xbox Live accounts ), you don't have to create a new one. Just open Minecraft, choose the option to sign in with your Microsoft account, and log in.
  • If you have Minecraft Java Edition, you can play against others who are also using Java Edition. If you have Minecraft Bedrock Edition (which is the version available on consoles, smartphones, tablets, and "Minecraft for Windows 10") and use a Minecraft/Microsoft account, you can play against other people using Bedrock Edition on any platform (e.g., Android, Nintendo Switch players can play together).

Step 2 Click LOG IN at the top-right corner.

  • It may take a few moments for the code to arrive. Check your Spam or Junk folder if you don't get the message in a few minutes.

Step 8 Solve the puzzle to prove you aren't a robot.

  • Your Gamertag cannot contain any offensive words.
  • Try not to use anything too personal in your Gamertag, such as your full name or address. Being more anonymous can help you stay safe online .

Step 10 Click LET'S GO.

  • If you are playing Minecraft on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch, you will also need an active subscription to your console's online service.

Signing in with your Microsoft Account (Bedrock Edition)

Step 1 Open Minecraft.

  • The first time you sign in, you may be asked if you want to save your purchases to a Microsoft account. [3] X Research source Select Save to Microsoft Account to do so.
  • Enter the email address and password associated with your Microsoft account to log in.
  • Select the green Let's Play button to start playing Minecraft.

Step 4 Sign in on a Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4/5.

  • After selecting Sign In , you will see a screen with an 8-digit code.
  • Open a web browser on a computer, phone, or tablet.
  • Go to http://aka.ms/remoteconnect in the web browser.
  • Enter the 8-digit code into the field in the web browser and click Next .
  • Once your code is accepted, you will be signed in to Minecraft with your account.

Signing in to Minecraft Java Edition

Step 1 Open the Minecraft Launcher.

  • The other account type listed is a Mojang account. You cannot create a new Mojang account to use with Minecraft now that Minecraft requires Microsoft accounts. If you already have a Minecraft account through Mojang, you will have to migrate it to Microsoft at some point in 2021. [4] X Research source However, as of June 2021, Minecraft has not starting migrating accounts. When it's time to migrate, you'll receive an email with instructions.

Step 3 Enter the email address associated with your Microsoft account and click Next.

Tips from our Readers

  • Try this quick tip to remember your account: Write the email, username, and password of your account on a piece of paper. Then, put the paper in a safe place only you know. This way, if you forget it, you can look at the paper!
  • If you don't know how to play, go to YouTube for help on how to get started.
  • Creating a Minecraft account does not mean you will be able to play Minecraft. In order to play Minecraft: Java Edition, you will have to buy it for 26.99. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
