Doctoral Program - Application Process

The Doctoral Program of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta invites applications from candidates with proven academic backgrounds, who have the intellect, interest, and ingenuity to pursue doctoral studies in management sciences and related disciplines. Applicants must possess the ability, motivation, and discipline to sustain themselves in a rigorous doctoral program for four-to-five years.

Eligibility

An applicant of the Doctoral Programme is required to have:

First Class Master's or Post graduate diploma (2 years) in any discipline and a three-year Bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks in the aggregate;

CA with minimum 50% marks or CS/CMA with minimum 55% marks, with B.com degree;

B.Tech/4 year’s degree with 6.5 CGPA or equivalent.

Non-engineering candidates who have undergone 10+2+5 years will be considered eligible to apply for the Doctoral Programme. CMA (USA) candidates are also eligible to apply for the Doctoral Programme.

In addition, applicant must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate in either the Secondary or the Higher Secondary Examination of a Board (or equivalent).

A final-year student appearing for the Bachelor's degree examination in Engineering or Master's degree examination in any discipline can also apply. Such a candidate, if selected, will be provisionally admitted provided (s) he completes all requirements for obtaining the degree before 30th June 2024. Admission of the candidate will remain provisional until (s) he produces mark sheets proving that (s) he satisfies the eligibility criteria. The deadline for submitting the final year degree mark sheets is 31st December 2024.

Reservation

Government of India guidelines for reservation are followed during admissions.

Admission Tests

An applicant can apply to at most two areas of specialization. (S)he needs to have taken the Common Admission Test (CAT) in 2023 OR, depending on chosen specialization(s), alternative test(s) in lieu of the CAT as specified in the following table. The test score(s) should be valid on January 30th, 2024.

Candidates should get their GMAT scores officially reported to the Institute using the code: 9CP-HT-94.

Candidates should get their GRE scores officially reported to the Institute using the code: 7496.

"Validity of Score (other than CAT), Two years from the date of test and should be valid on the deadline of submission of the application form".

Online GMAT/GRE (Take home) exam scores are not valid. Only test center-based GMAT/GRE scores are valid.

A MBA/PGDM (two years full time) holder of any of the IIMs with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.00/9.00 and above (or equivalent) does not need to take any Admission Test. (S)he can apply directly using the DP Online Application Process. (S)he has to pay the application fee, and meet the application deadline. After submission of the application forms, the selection procedure followed for such a candidate will be identical to that of all other candidates.

Dr. Samrat Roy Ph.D. Programme Co-ordinator

September 2015 was a landmark in the history of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. The college was granted permission by the University of Calcutta to independently initiate a Ph.D. program in the departments of Physics, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Commerce. This makes St. Xavier’s one of a very select few colleges in the country to be allowed this privilege. It is a recognition by both the University of Calcutta and the University Grants Commission that St. Xavier’s has the merit, quality and academic pedigree to undertake and supervise research.

Prior to this, teachers of these departments were registered as doctoral supervisors under the University of Calcutta. As supervisors working under University rules, they could guide or act as co-guides to Ph.D. students registered under the University of Calcutta. The permission to run an independent Ph.D. program in St. Xavier’s College is significant in that it empowers the faculty of the four Departments to supervise Ph.D. work of research scholars registered with the College, following the Ph.D. regulations of St. Xavier’s College formulated according to the University Grants Commission and approved by the Senate of the University of Calcutta.

The Ph.D. program has been running successfully since the time of its inception with Fr. Principal as Head of the Ph.D. Committee.

The induction of fresh Ph.D. scholars happens once a year in the month of July. The process involves a successful completion of the Research Entrance Examination (RET) and a rigorous interview. The scholars have to register under St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), after completing the Ph.D. Course Work conducted by the College. The final Ph.D. degree is conferred by St. Xavier’s College and University of Calcutta. The motto of the College is Nihil Ultra- Nothing Beyond. Fr. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ, Principal, St. Xavier’s College, has taken that motto seriously. His mission is to expand the college by opening new PG courses in both the Arts and Science streams and finally, Ph.D. programs in these courses. With his vision, inspiration and determination, the College marches ahead to turn his dreams into a reality.

The subjects offered are Physics, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Commerce respectively.

The total scholars currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program since 2016 till date is 69.

The Registered scholars across departments is 36.

The Ph.D curriculum includes course work classes for its first batch of scholars towards the end of the year followed by course work examination before winter vacations.

“Scholar’s Day” the annual event of the PhD program is held every year since it’s inception in 2018. The PhD department looks forward to extend its wings to other post graduate disciplines of this college which will open new avenues of research in their respective disciplines.

Admissions 2019

In the year, 2019, 65 candidates applied for Ph.D programs in Commerce, Physics, Micro biology and Biotechnology respectively. The non Net candidates are required to qualify Research Aptitude Test (RET) as per UGC norms. The total number of RET eligible candidates were 19. Out of 19 candidates who appeared for RET, 11 candidates were successful.

The total number of RET exempted candidates were 44.

As per your query I would glad to tell you that for to eligible for MA psychology you need to have passed graudation (ba or bsc) with atleast 55 percent in psychology stream . With ba history , I am sorry to say you are not eligible for Masters in pyschology stream in calcutta university, I would advise you to look for other streams related to your field and work hard in it

AmbujaNeotia Group, with a strong sense of social commitment, extends its capabilities towards the development of education. The Neotia family started its journey in education with Neotia Institute of Technology Management and Science (NITMAS), previously known as Institute of Technology and Marine Engineering (ITME), a college established in 2002, affiliated to the then West Bengal University of Technology, which is now known as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT). The Neotia University (TNU) was established vide the West Bengal State Government Act XXIII of 2014. Though TNU is relatively new in its present configuration, it has its antecedents in the 17 years old institution.

TNU is diligent to pursuit of excellence and aims to attain holistic development of its students by fostering a truly inspirational academic environment and ensure that the education provided is contemporary and experiential through partnership with industries and other academic institutions of importance.

Starting its PhD programme in 2017, TNU currently offers Ph.D programmes across its five different schools. The admission to Ph.D programmes is in concurrence with rules and regulations set by UGC.

Admission Procedure

Applications shall be invited through announcements by the University preferably twice in a year at the time of semester begins. The interested applicant/s may submit the application for the admission in Ph.D. programme to the Registrar Office of the University. The concerned application shall be sent to the Research and Development (R&D) committee from the Registrar Office. R&D committee shall get in touch with the Controller of Examination section to conduct the admission entrance test (written mode). In the entrance test, the 50% question shall be set from the research methodology and the other 50% question shall be set from the concerned subject/s. The applicants scoring ≥ 55% marks in the admission entrance test shall be called for interview. The R&D committee shall constitute the panel of experts in order to conduct the interview. On the basis of the performance of the candidate in the interview, the candidate may be considered for the enrollment in the Ph.D program of the university.

Expert Committees

At the end of every six months, candidate’s research progress shall be evaluated by the research advisory committee (RAC)created for each scholar. RAC shall suggest ways to improve the quality of research work of the scholar. RAC shall be made by considering five faculty members in which one expert must be from outside of TNU. The report of RAC shall be submitted to the R&D committee. The R&D committee shall keep the records and further shall forward the same to COE.

Career & Research Opportunities

The Doctoral Programme at The Neotia University equips candidates to indulge with equal prowess in careers involving research, academia or industry expertise.For those inclined towards a research career, several positions are available in research institutions and universities. For those who wish to pursue a teaching career, well-paying teaching positions are available in plenty in public and private funded higher educational institutions.

In TNU, we put our Ph.D scholars to experience the state of the art research ambience. In TNU, we practice to create a meaningful bridge between theoretical ideas and practical observations. We used to put special emphasis on research methodology to train the scholars regarding the commitment and dedication required to design experiments and analyse the observations. The PhD scholars are oriented in such a way so that they become competent and confident after the completion of the Ph.D program.

The addition of a Ph.D to a resume is two-fold: knowledge and skills. Any job can utilize either of these to different extent.Let us look at the common career options.Traditionally, the most preferred jobs for Ph.Ds have been industrial R&D Labs, college and university positions, and start-ups.

Department of Ph.D

A Full-time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate devoting full time for completing the requirements of the program and should not be employed in any other organization or should not be a student in any other course anywhere, and a part- time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate who is devoting a part of his time towards the pursuit of the program while discharging his official/employment obligations anywhere.

Ph.D. program is for minimum 3 years. UEM encourages co-guide from other organizations but there must be an internal guide, and the internal guide must be the main guide.

PH.D Programme

The candidate shall have LL.M degree or any Masters degree having the potentiality of interdisciplinary study with law from any university recognized by UGC or equivalent LL.M or Masters Degree of foreign university with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent CGPA.
However, this condition is relaxed to 50% in case of candidates belonging for those who obtained their masters degree prior to 10th September 1991
The condition is relaxed to 50% in case of candidates belonging to SC and ST/OBC (Non creamy layer) or differently abled categories.
Candidates who have qualified for UGC/SLET/SET/JRF fellowships or having M.Phil. Degrees are exempted from Entrance Test. However, they have to undergo an interview.
Admission of candidates under 1.1 above to Ph.D/M. Phil shall be through an Entrance test and interview.
Admission of candidates under 4 above shall be on the basis of interview. SHORTLISTING OF CANDIDATES: All the applicants have to submit a Research Proposal within 3000(three thousand ) words. The Proposal shall content- Title; Statement of problem, Literature Review, Prior Research; Objectives of Study; Research Questions; Hypotheses; Methodology including sample framework, units of data, Primary and secondary sources and statistical analysis (if required)probable contribution of the study and limitation of the study. On evaluation of the Research Proposals the short listed candidates are called for written tests and/or Interview as the case may be.

The Entrance Test shall consist of one paper of 100 marks with 3 hours duration. The syllabus of the paper shall cover:

Written Exam The syllabus of the LAW paper shall cover 50 marks questions on Research Methodology and other 50 marks should be from various law subjects or interdisciplinary subjects as the case may be. Law subjects are- Law of Contract; Constitutional Law; Law of Crimes; Public International Law; Jurisprudence; Company Law; Intellectual Property Law; Information Technology Law; Interview for all qualified candidates – 50 marks

Selection of candidates for the available seats shall be on the basis of marks obtained in Research Proposal, entrance test plus interview or Research Proposal and interview only as the case may be on the basis of merit. Date of the interview will be notified later on.

The Department of Biological Sciences at IISER Kolkata integrates cutting edge research with innovative teaching at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, constantly striving towards academic and scientific excellence. Since its inception in 2006, the department has made its mark in biology research and teaching in India. Focusing on the essential unity among biological systems, research in the department spans from the molecular to the organismal levels. Research interests of many faculty members also intersect closely with that of colleagues in the departments of Physical, Chemical, Mathematical and Earth sciences, giving rise to a truly interdisciplinary research climate. Broad fields of research in the Department of Biological Sciences include cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, neurobiology, computational biology, structural biology and biophysics, environmental biology and animal behavior and ecology. Various model systems, ranging from bacteria and human cells to fruitflies, zebrafish, ants, dogs and mice are being used for research in the department.

Research and teaching in the Department of Biological Sciences is supported by state of the art instruments and facilities such as confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, histopathology, tissue culture and facilities for housing and conducting research on various organisms. These are maintained as departmental and institutional facilities, providing easy accessibility to all investigators and allowing collaborative and interdisciplinary research to flourish in the department.

The strength of the department lies in its twenty six faculty members. Many of the faculty members hold prestigious national and international fellowships. More than hundred PhD students, forty integrated PhD students, along with several project fellows, research assistant and support staff constitute the core strength of the department. Moreover, the undergraduate students from the BS-MS programme, who are majoring in Biological Sciences, constitute an important part of the department. Together, all these members of the department make it into a happening place where people are engaged in unravelling the mysteries of nature and are also paving the path for the application of our research in addressing problems in human health and disease.

The diverse fields of research, and the expertise and enthusiasm of department members in an intellectually stimulating interdisciplinary climate, make the Department of Biological Sciences a very dynamic place for nurturing the next generation of scientists, and for developing an excellent research programme directed towards answering various outstanding questions in biology.

The Doctoral program for Working Professionals PhD(WP) at IIM Shillong is a unique doctoral level program in management for working professionals in order to meet the requirements of the employer organization.

The goal of the program is to prepare enthusiastic executives and teaching professionals who contribute to the field of training, management research and consulting practice, launch an academic career and help to strike a balance between the theory and practice of management.

The PhD(WP) program endeavours to co-create knowledge in all aspects of Management Education for sustainable development and to develop independent researchers with strong ethical values. The program is committed to inculcate in individuals the necessary knowledge and skills to co-create original cross functional interdisciplinary knowledge and contribute towards creating high quality research. The program will enhance the working professionals’ and teaching professional’ domain knowledge.

We encourage experienced professional with a blend of corporate experience, intellectual curiosity, and research aspirations. Whether you aim to establish an academic or research career to elevate your role to strategic / consulting level on both – the program offers you the platform to learn academic and unleash your potential for knowledge creation.

Program Vision

The PhD(WP) Program at IIM Shillong offers intellectually curious working professionals an opportunity to gain advanced research skills to complement their practical knowledge. The program enables professionals to acquire interdisciplinary research expertise on a part-time basis over a period of three to four years. The program will equip professionals to produce high-quality research output of international standards through specialized research training and global collaborations. ; and empowers them to offer practical and sustainable solutions facing businesses and managers. This program will facilitate professionals to pursue varied career avenues such as academia, management consultancy, training, coaching, and research.

The overall experience of the recent immersion program was highly satisfying. Nothing quite matches the energy of in-person meetings. We had the privilege of attending the dynamic pre-conference sessions of iMarC, setting the tone for the immersion program. Professor Weng Marc Lim’s session stood out as a captivating highlight, offering profound insights. Professor Murugan’s SLR classes were instrumental in bringing clarity to complex concepts. Moreover, the opportunity to engage with supervisors and TAC members fostered fruitful idea exchanges. Meetings with the Director, Dean (Academics), and Dean (Research) provided valuable perspectives on the institute’s expectations. The Ph.D. Chairperson’s reassurance of the institute’s high standards left a lasting impression, giving us a clear understanding of what lies ahead.

The immersion program was a very well-crafted program. The Chief Guest of the program, Mr. Lim gave important insights on skills required to write a good paper that I can immediately apply. The ease with which he taught and made everything look so easy gave us a lot of confidence. Important topics were covered and emphasized, deepening my understanding and broadening my perspective. Session on Time Series Analysis and PLS- SEM were also very helpful and gave us enough food for thought.

I would have loved to stay in the Campus close to the professors to have more time for interactions and that is one area which the PhD office can explore for our next immersion. Overall, I would highly recommend this program to any scholar.

Shri Vivek Singh is a public policy and communications professional. He has been serving as OSD (Officer on Special Duty) to the Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister since May 2019. He has been a part of the FM’s team in the last 5 Union Budgets and also worked in the Raksha Mantri’s office from November 2018 to May 2019. He was a corporate banker before joining the government.

He is an alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), ICAI and IIM Shillong. He is a regular contributor of articles and opinion pieces in leading business dailies where he writes on macro-economy and policy-related topics. While at IIM-Shillong, he was a part of the Student Council and won the Gold Medal for being the Best All-rounder and making the ‘Most Positive Contribution to Campus Life’.

Rohit Joshi is currently working as a Professor in the Operations Management and Quantitative Techniques area at IIM Shillong. He is a Fulbright fellow. He brings with him an extensive leadership experience in building organizations from ground up, business transformation and leading multi-functional teams in medium sized and large organizations across 30+ countries across ME, APAC, Indian Subcontinent & Africa while growing profitable businesses in the global Travel & Transport Industry. Dr. D P Goyal, Director, IIM Shillong, is an internationally acclaimed academician and researcher. Dr. Paula Sengupta is an artist, academic and curator resident in Kolkata. She graduated in Painting from the College of Art, New Delhi, followed by an MFA and PhD in Printmaking from Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan. She is currently Professor at the Department of Printmaking at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata.

She is author of The Printed Picture: Four Centuries of Indian Printmaking published by DAG, New Delhi and Foreign & Indigenous Influences in Indian Printmaking with LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, Saarbrucken, Germany.

Her curatorial projects include a soul (un)gendered: Anupam Sud – A Retrospective for DAG MODERN & KNMA, Delhi in 2019-20; Ghare Baire at the Old Currency Building, Kolkata for DAG MODERN and the Archaeological Survey of India in 2019; Popular Prints and the Freedom Struggle at the Drishyakala Museum, Red Fort, Delhi for DAG MODERN and the Archaeological Survey of India in 2019; the landmark exhibition Trajectories: 19th-21st Century Printmaking from India and Pakistan for the Sharjah Art Museum, Sharjah, UAE in 2014; and six editions of The Printed Picture: Four Centuries of Indian Printmaking for DAG MODERN, India from 2012-18.

Introduction :

Admissions to Ph.D. programs at Amity University campuses are conducted twice a year, for January and July sessions. A Ph.D. program is offered in two modes- Full time and Part time and not in a distance learning mode. Hence, coursework, participation in various interactions, submission of progress reports through presentations etc. on regular basis is mandatory during the program. A Full-time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate devoting full time for completing the requirements of the program and a part- time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate who is devoting a part of his time towards the pursuit of the program while discharging his official / employment obligations. Ph.D. full time is for minimum 3 years and Ph.D. part time for minimum 3.5 years. Maximum duration in case of both the modes is 6 years. Part time Candidates should ensure they have adequate facilities/ required infrastructural set up at their work- place which is conducive to research. Also, there will be a requirement to have a Co-guide from your origination. External Co-Guide will however be appointed only after his/her profile is approved by the university authorities. Amity encourages interdisciplinary research and exchange of ideas and knowledge in various related fields. Consequently, scholars may appoint a Co-Guide from outside Amity University, as per university rules. The main Guide for the scholar during the Ph.D. program will be from Amity University, appointed as per the research topic and Guide availability. Ph.D. Full time enthusiasts have the scope to work as research fellows in the various ongoing prestigious research projects in the university.
