Franklin and Marshall Requirements for Admission

What are Franklin and Marshall's admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:

• Testing requirements, including SAT and ACT requirements
• Application requirements

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

The acceptance rate at Franklin and Marshall is 36.2% . For every 100 applicants, 36 are admitted.

This means the school is very selective . If you meet Franklin and Marshall's requirements for GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and other components of the application, you have a great shot at getting in. But if you fall short on GPA or your SAT/ACT scores, you'll have a very low chance of being admitted, even if you meet the other admissions requirements.

Franklin and Marshall GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

Average GPA: 3.83

The average GPA at Franklin and Marshall is 3.83 .

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA. This school did not officially report its average GPA, but we've estimated it here using data from over 1,000 schools.)

With a GPA of 3.83, Franklin and Marshall requires you to be near the top of your class , and well above average. Your transcript should show mostly A's. Ideally, you will also have taken several AP or IB classes to show that you can handle academics at a college level.

If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.83, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate . This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

Franklin and Marshall hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don't."

Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Franklin and Marshall will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.

Franklin and Marshall SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

Average SAT: 1350

The average SAT score composite at Franklin and Marshall is a 1350 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes Franklin and Marshall Moderately Competitive for SAT test scores.

Franklin and Marshall SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1300, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1410. In other words, a 1300 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1410 will move you up to above average .

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

Franklin and Marshall ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, Franklin and Marshall likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 31

The average ACT score at Franklin and Marshall is 31. This score makes Franklin and Marshall Strongly Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 29, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 32.

Even though Franklin and Marshall likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 29 or below, you'll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application. There are so many applicants scoring 31 and above that a 29 will look academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 32 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to Franklin and Marshall, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 32.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

Franklin and Marshall considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is very selective, strong academic scores are critical to improving your chances of admission . If you're able to score a 1410 SAT or a 32 ACT or above, you'll have a very strong chance at getting in.

For a school as selective as Franklin and Marshall, rounding out the rest of your application will also help. We'll cover those details next.

But if you apply with a score below a 1410 SAT or a 32 ACT, you unfortunately have a low chance of getting in. There are just too many other applicants with high SAT/ACT scores and strong applications, and you need to compete against them.

Don’t let this sneaky supplement get away from you! Since these questions are technically optional* they are located under “Other Information” on the Common Application Member Page. As the applicant, you must specify on the Common Application whether or not you will submit responses.

*Hint: so-called optional essays are, in our opinion, never optional. Take every opportunity you can to speak to admissions in your own voice and demonstrate your commitment to the school.

In addition to the Common Application Essay, Franklin and Marshall also offers applicants the opportunity to respond to two prompts and provide the admission committee with further insight into the students’ goals, character, and potential to contribute to the F&M community.

Be creative and have fun. use your responses as an opportunity for us to get to know you..

Let’s dive in!

Prompt 1: On September 27, 1777 Lancaster served as the nation’s capital for a single day. If you could do anything or be anyone for one single day, what would you do? (150 word limit)

This is an opportunity for the Admissions Officers at Franklin and Marshall to get a peek into your brain and see what fascinates, bothers, or excites you. When approaching this prompt, think about what kind of impact you want to have on the world, then get creative. If you’re very passionate about climate change, maybe you’d write about how you would want to implement more carbon neutral public transportation in major cities. If you want to bring happiness to people’s lives, maybe you want to be Ellen Degeneres for a single day and feel the gratitude and joy that comes from a chuckling audience. Although it might be your instinct, our advice is to skip saying that you’d be Jay Z so you could experience being married to Beyonce for a day.

Prompt 2: Why F&M? (100 word limit)

Why Franklin and Marshall College? You only have 100 words to convince Admissions Officers that you have done your homework and know Franklin and Marshall would be the perfect fit for you! Thus, you have to be concise and specific. Your answer can refer to academics: majors, classes, professors, or the community: clubs, events, student body, or anything that makes you want to be a Franklin and Marshall student. Our advice would be to write down every reason why you are applying and use those notes to craft your response. You don’t have a lot of space to write, so make sure to focus on the most important reasons: What excites you most about an F&M education? What personal qualities or interests can you highlight for admissions to demonstrate your fit? Remember, although this essay should focus on details of the F&M experience, it is still an essay about you, your goals, and your passions.

Supplemental essay

<p>does anyone know how long the supplemental essay is supposed to be? I’m referring to the one that asks about who you would rather dine with, franklin or marshall.</p>

<p>the common app says 600 chars so its probably around 150 words I guess. Could anyone give me ideas on how to approach this one. As an IS I am really confused.</p>

<p>Since you can upload your essay, I think there is no limit.</p>

<p>If you go to FandM.edu and download the PDF version of the supplement, (one you can hand write to submit) they offer you three lines for your response. Therefore, I’m almost certain they want their applicants to abide by the 600 character limit in the online version of the supplement.</p>

How Important Are Supplemental Essays for College?

In college applications, supplemental essays can become an afterthought, with some students scrambling to write them at the last minute. But supplemental essays are a crucial part of the application process and should be given plenty of time and attention.

How do supplementals fit into your application? Above all, they function as supporting characters in your story. In your main essay, you’re writing a story about yourself―you’re the main character, and you’re pitching the narrative to each school. If your main essay is a movie, the supplemental essays are spin-offs that clarify your back story. 

A common supplemental essay question will ask why you’re interested in a specific college. For example, Duke University will likely ask, “Why Duke ?” In answering this question, a common mistake that applicants make is listing all the activities and programs that they like at Duke. Unfortunately, this approach says nothing about why you belong at the university. Your essay should pitch you to the school, but if you answer a supplemental question with a list of what you like, you end up pitching the school to yourself. 

This is why it’s important to tie your supplemental answers into the main narrative of your story. Even if the subject of your main essay and the subject of a supplemental essay don’t necessarily relate to each other, you can usually find a way to connect the two ideas. For example, if you’re a math lover but also a jazz musician, you can connect those two subjects through what they have in common: finding patterns. Your personal statement should present a narrative about you, and your supplemental essays should circumscribe the story that you’re telling. 

In addition to the story that you’re telling, you also want your supplemental essays to demonstrate your skills. Your essays should be grammatically sound and well-structured, demonstrating your mastery of the English language. 

There’s a fine line between telling your story and showing your story. If you tell your story, the admissions reader will come away from your essay thinking, “Wow, that was a great summary of this person. I think I know everything about them.” But if you show your story, the admissions reader will come away thinking, “That was an interesting exposé of this person. I’d love to meet with them so we can talk more about this or that.” Ideally, your essay should give the impression that a sequel is on the way. An essay that shows rather than tells will use emotion, detail, and vivid language to paint a picture rather than rattle off facts. 

Everyone has a story to tell, and there are common ingredients in admissions essays, but it’s how you put those ingredients together that will make you stand apart from other applicants. While your main personal statement will convey who you are, your supplemental essays should add supporting details and points of interest. Since supplemental essays are tailored specifically to each school, you have a chance to show why you belong there. 

Many students think of supplemental essays and the main essay as two separate pieces, but they’re part of the same application, and they function more as one package. What you can’t fit in your Common App essay, you can explore more deeply in your supplementals, creating a fuller picture of you as a person and prospective student.

How did u first hear about our college and y did u choose to apply? To be well acquainted with the admission process in the US, the first thing I did after my final exams was to visit USEF (United States Educational Foundation) Nepal. In the Friday session, the advisors described to us the process of application step by step, the first of which was to search and choose colleges. After attending the Friday session, I went directly to the library on the ground floor. There, on the wall, I saw some flags of US Colleges and Universities. A blue flag in the first row caught my attention. It read Franklin and Marshall College. I asked for permission to use a library computer and started exploring that college. From that day, I have explored the college nicely and have found it a great fit for me. F and M was the first and the best college I found. Therefore, choosing to apply there was not a difficult decision for me. Franklin and Marshall College, as I know it now, is a vibrant intellectual community. The primary factor for my wanting an education at F and M is its academic excellence. The rigorous academics and engaging faculty members in a "small class" will help me reach my full potential. I will be able to interact closely with my professors and learning will be fun. By learning more about the college's strong commitment to liberal education, I came to believe that its focus on the overall development of students is the most appealing factor of an F and M education. The Curriculum strikes me as unique. No doubt, it will help me to develop my critical thinking. That especially appeals to me. An F and M education will provide me with self-mastery as well as an experience that will shape my future life (personal as well as professional). I not only believe but also know that the college will prepare me to be a future leader and a responsible citizen of a global community. Throughout my life, I have aspired to become a theoretical physicist. I cannot help but have an interest in probing the deepest problems of physics. The extensive undergraduate research opportunities at F and M will help me in my courses. Interacting so closely with the most talented and engaging professors and students from around the globe will certainly broaden the horizon of my thinking. This is what I long for. There will be people who can understand my ideas. There will be a delicious exchange of ideas between us which will lead to a great concoction of new ideas. Here on the other side of the world I lean back and daydream about it. The opportunity to do independent research and work with the professors in their research and help co-author professional papers is what I have desired for a long time. This will add an extra dimension to classroom learning. This will also help me learn good lab practices. Another important factor that led me to choose F and M as a best fit college is the diversity of experience that I will get there. The big resources available to complement the classroom learning will give me a real life experience. As I am interested in various aspects of science, from astrophysics and quantum mechanics to its engineering aspect, the facilities available in all these fields appeals to me. The co-operative degree engineering program with reputed universities also strikes me as very inviting. Facilities available in astrophysics such as the NURO, Majors Lounge, Beowulf Cluster and the Astronomy Research Lab will help me pursue my interest in engaging in extensive research. They will also help me explore astrophysics as a career interest. I can see fantastic opportunities waiting for me at F and M. The excellent undergraduate research opportunities and talented faculty will uncover the latent talent in me to foster my desire to be a future scientist and contribute significantly to the mankind's development. It will be a once-in-a-life-time experience. Given the opportunity to study there, I will happily make the supreme effort to wring the last drop of goodness out of every opportunity I get. And I will be able to fulfill my desire to be a future physicist.

How to Navigate the New Supplemental Essay Prompts Post-Affirmative Action

It has been three weeks since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that affirmative action could no longer be used in college admissions. Based on the decision, though, students can still write an essay about their race as long as it is "concretely tied to a quality of character or unique ability."

In the short time since the ruling was announced , some colleges have gone one step further when it comes to capturing a student's background by implementing a supplemental essay prompt that directly addresses this.

• For a student who writes about their race (or another form of diversity) in the main college essay: To avoid "hammering" repetitive themes, students should choose another aspect of their life if a college has a supplemental essay regarding background. In fact, this is a chance to show range and creativity. Diversity is not just about race. It can be about diversity of thought, geography, physical differences, socioeconomic background, religion, the family one comes from, and more. Even the type of roof over one's head or the neighborhood they live in says a lot about a student. By writing the supplemental essay about something besides their racial background, the student can layer even more information about themselves in their application.
• For an underrepresented student (racially, geographically, socioeconomically, etc.) who doesn't write about their background in the main college essay: It will be absolutely essential for the student to bring up their underrepresented background in one of these supplemental essays. In some cases, this would be the only way a college would know about a student's unique background. And because not all colleges will have a supplemental essay or one related to a student's background, it will be important for the student to indicate their background somewhere else in the application if possible. For example, a student who comes from a Hispanic background and receives the National Hispanic Recognition award from the College Board should list this under the "Honors" section of an application.
• For a majority student who feels like they have nothing to write about for a supplemental essay about their background or lived experience: Every single student has something unique to share about their background. The student has to be willing to spend time reflecting first before they claim they have nothing to write about. It could be their parents' marriage, a sibling with a disability, the town they come from, the school they attend, the native language of their ancestors they so desperately want to learn, their height, their style, their humor, their silence, their voice. This is a chance to show colleges and themselves that there is more to them than meets the eye.

As you’re working on your college applications, you might notice that while some schools have four or five supplemental essays, there are colleges that have none. At these schools, admissions officers still look at your Common App essay, letters of recommendation and extracurriculars—so make sure those parts of your application are strong and demonstrate your fit for the college.

These are not your average dorms. F&M’s College Houses are lively hubs of intellectual, extracurricular, and social engagement that not only give you a place to hang out, sleep, and study, but also your own special place to belong.

Theme, Special Interest, and Fraternity and Sorority Housing

Open to juniors and seniors

If you’re involved in a fraternity or sorority , you can choose to live in your organization’s residence if they have one. You also have the option to apply to live in a theme or special interest house. Themes include the arts, sustainability, quiet living, wellness and substance free, and housing associated with several clubs and organizations .

Traditional Residence Halls

Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors

We have two residence halls on campus in addition to our College Houses: Thomas Hall and Schnader Hall. Students can begin living in Schnader or Thomas Hall in their sophomore year.

In your junior and senior year, you can choose to live in one of three F&M-affiliated leasing partners, all within walking distance of the College.

Renter’s Insurance

Franklin & Marshall College does not cover the cost of your personal belongings if they are stolen or damaged. Students are expected — and in some cases required — to obtain renters insurance before moving in to protect their personal items.

Shipping & Storing Your Items

F&M does not provide on-campus storage for students. Instead, we have a partnership with Storage Scholars, a service that lightens the burden of moving and storage.

F&M Residency Requirement 

Our four-year residency requirement means students are required to live in F&M-owned or -approved housing for all four years.

Incoming first-years will receive an email the summer before arrival with instructions regarding how to complete their housing application online. Rising sophomores, rising juniors and rising seniors participate in the online room selection lottery process to select housing within the College's portfolio of options for the next academic year. The housing lottery takes place in late March/early April each year. Student housing is reserved for currently enrolled students only. 

A student may commute to campus if they live with a parent or guardian full-time within a 50 mile radius of campus.
