Resume tips.

There is an old adage that implies a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Your job search is composed of numerous links and the ability to produce an effective resume is a vital link to this chain. Consider the following when approaching this potentially intimidating task:

  • There are no hard and fast rules.  An effective resume reflects your “uniqueness” as an individual.  IT IS YOUR STORY and should be regarded as a “Living Document”, requiring updates several times each semester.
  • The “story” told on your resume should reflect a TRUTHFUL summary of your accomplishments.  Misrepresentations and overenhancements always lead to trouble with potential employers.
  • You only get one chance to make a positive first impression! Make sure your “story” is told free of grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Have fun with this project – it should be an enjoyable “story” for you to produce!
  • Remember, resumes don’t get you jobs – they get you interviews.  Hence, another important link to your career chain!

Your resume “story” should be composed of several relevant “chapters”.  The following are suggestions for each of these:

  • Not all modern-day resumes include an objective statement.  If included, be specific to the point of what you are looking to achieve or obtain with your internship or job search.  Most employers are scanning resumes very quickly looking for key words and if the first item they encounter is a weak objective statement, there is a good chance you may not make it to the first round of interviews.
  • School(s) attended (usually do not include high school).  If multiple, list the most recent first.
  • Degree (Associates, Bachelor of Science, Masters, Doctoral) and date receiving degree.  Spell these out versus using abbreviations (BS, MS, PhD, etc.)
  • Major(s).  Include Option/Emphasis within major if offered.
  • Grade point (optional)
  • Thesis/Dissertation title for graduate level degrees
  • Percent of college education financed by self

Relevant Coursework

  • Although often times looked upon as “filler” by employers, specific coursework may be beneficial for research-based or technology careers in which certain lab techniques or computer skills are desired.

International Experiences

  • Today’s college student is provided the affordable opportunity to experience a diverse array of study abroad or international experiences.  These experiences definitely belong on a resume as recruiters recognize their value.  They may also be very beneficial in answering many of the behavioral-based questions asked during the course of an interview.  Tell me about….
  • On the resume, limit each experience to a couple brief sentences summarizing the major purpose or accomplishment of the trip.

Work Experience

  • Organize chronologically – most recent first.
  • Utilize bolding to emphasize “company” and italics for “position title”

Company , location Title,  dates of employment Bullet (describe job responsibilities/job accomplishments) Bullet Bullet

  • Utilize bullets to summarize responsibilities and accomplishments (Example - capstone internship project) rather than paragraphs. Quantify if possible.
  • Bullets can be complete or incomplete sentences.
  • Incorporate action verbs (get a list of these!) and “buzzwords” associated with your area of interest.
  • Watch verb tenses – past vs. present.  Pronouns are usually not necessary – “I”.
  • Avoid word redundancy (Example - repetitive use of same verb in bullets).
  • Farm background??? Make sure you include it on resume as recruiters recognize work ethic and values associated with it.  Include specifics – farm size, crops, livestock, machinery, ownership, etc.
  • Can include volunteer activities in this section.
  • Remember, regardless of the type of job, there are always universal tangibles that can be pulled from the work experience.  Example – teamwork, customer service, management responsibilities, computer skills, etc.

Activities & Honors

This is one of the most important sections of the resume as recruiters are looking to hire potential leaders.  If you don’t have any activities – find some!  It is never too late to start.  Include the following:

  • Campus clubs/organizations (list specific offices held – ex. President)
  • Professional organizations
  • Fraternities & sororities
  • Volunteer activities
  • Scholarships
  • Dean’s List
  • Honorary academic memberships (Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigma Delta, etc.)
  • Other academic recognition

Note: As a freshman and sophomore it is acceptable to include important activities/honors from high school (Valedictorian, Iowa FFA Degree, etc.) on your resume.  However, as you progress during your college years these activities should be replaced with current college activities and honors.

Publications & Presentations

This section is usually reserved for graduate students but may occasionally apply to undergraduates.  If applicable, list appropriate authors, publications, conferences, etc.

  • List them on your resume!
  • There is no magic number on how many to list (3-4 is standard).
  • Keep current and include references from academic and work experiences.
  • Be detailed (name, title, work affiliation, address including zip code, email and telephone number)
  • Always ask if they will serve as a reference and inform them when you are applying for specific positions. Extend a note of “thanks” for their efforts if you do get the position.

Other tips for a successful resume include:

  • In most cases a two-page resume is acceptable.  Curriculum Vitae may be longer.
  • Use white or light-colored, standard size (8-1/2” x 11”) paper, printed on one side.  Since many resumes are faxed or photocopied, do not use dark, marbled, speckled, or heavy paper.
  • Mail resumes and cover letters in large manila envelopes to avoid folding.
  • When emailing a resume, include specific name (example - John Doe Resume) of resume in email subject line.

Job applicant reveals ‘foolproof’ resume hack she used to land 3 part-time positions.

@camipetyn wanted to share this hack again bc it helped me SO much shoutout @Daym for teaching me it!! #recessioncore #jobapplytricks #jobinterview #applyingforjobs ♬ original sound – Cami Petyn

A musician who applied to 65 job openings and failed to get one interview bypassed tech systems with a little-known “dystopian” résumé hack to land three part-time positions.

“Did I girl boss too close to the sun and now not only have one, not two, but three part-time jobs? I did,” Cami Petyn told her 542,700 TikTok followers while giving herself a bow.

“I was terrified a couple of weeks ago. I applied to probably 65 jobs and wasn’t hearing anything back,” Petyn said before sharing she became worried that she would have to sell her things and move if she didn’t find a job while she focused on her music career.

Luckily for Petyn, one of her friends shared “a hack that’s incredibly dystopian” to secure job interviews “left and right.”

“I guess because we actually live in a dystopia out of a Philip K. Dick novel, AI is causing a lot of us to not get jobs, besides in the recession, AI is partially to blame.”

Cami Petyn shared a hack she used on her résumé to land 3 part-time jobs.

The social media user revealed that many companies use artificial intelligence to help HR sort through applications before they reach human eyes, rejecting those that don’t fit the job requirements.

“The problem is AI will say you’re not a good fit if it can’t read the résumé if the formatting isn’t AI friendly,” Petyn said in her April 25 video which has been viewed over 1.2 million times.

She described the hack which she claims is “foolproof” to be AI friendly.

To work around the pesky AI bots, the candidates should go to the online listing and “highlight the entire job description” before copying and pasting it onto their résumé.

Next, the cheeky hack calls for users to make the font size as small as possible before turning the ink white, so it is naked to the human eye, but AI would recognize the hidden text.

The AI system aims to read every keyword it is programmed to detect and allow the applicants’ résumé to be sent to the next step in the hiring process.

While the hack is a great way to help people get more job interviews, it also means more work has to be put into it.

“This does mean who have to alter your résumé for every job you apply to which heavily sucks,” Petyn said. “But you know what sucks more, panicking about not having a job.”

The social media user revealed that many companies use artificial intelligence to help HR sort through applications before they reach human eyes, rejecting those that don't fit the job requirements.

The musician shared that she not only has been getting more interviews after using the hack and submitting the application with “quick reply,” but she is also emailing her résumé to the company and briefly introducing herself.

“Like I said, I applied to like 65 jobs and wasn’t hearing anything back and I started doing this dystopian ass s–t and it worked and I’m very, very grateful.”

Petyn isn’t the only applicant who shared that the hack has worked for them in finding a job.

“I applied to over 1k jobs in a year and heard back from four. Did this and heard back a day later five months ago. It works,” one commenter claimed.

Others have pointed out to get rid of all the “fancy formatting we were taught” and change it to basic text and bullet points.

Western Union Resumes Remittance Service to Cuba After 3-Month Outage

HAVANA (Reuters) - Western Union confirmed on Thursday it had resumed its remittance service from the U.S. to Cuba after the system collapsed more than three months earlier, restoring a vital lifeline for Cubans and their friends and families in the U.S.

Western Union said its services to Cuba had been disrupted since Jan. 28, forcing Cubans who depend on the company's money transfer system to seek alternative, and often more costly, routes for receiving money.

"We understand our service is a crucial connection between those living in the U.S. and their family living in Cuba," said Rodrigo Garcia, the president of Western Union North America and Latin America.

"We are pleased to resume service to this vital corridor and provide essential money transfer services to those living on the island."

Western Union, among the world's top providers of money transfer services, in February said services had collapsed due to technical issues with the processing of transactions in Cuba, and said the outage only affected the Caribbean island nation.

Neither the Cuban government nor Western Union has specified the cause of the technical issues.

Yenisley Noa, a 33-year old Havana resident, applauded the return of Western Union, which she said had worked well for residents in the past.

“Everyone is having money problems," she said. "The best option is for the Western Union to return again.”

Western Union resumed remittances to the island in 2023, nearly three years after the Trump administration put in place sanctions that triggered a halt in service.

Remittances are a crucial source of income for Cuban families, but the need has become even more acute of late amid a severe economic crisis resulting from tighter U.S. sanctions, the COVID-19 pandemic and a floundering tourism sector.

Studies show that almost 70% of the Cuban population receives remittances in varying forms, according to a 2023 report from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), though there are no official figures available from the Cuban government.

Here is what Stormy Daniels testified happened between her and Donald Trump

A sketch shows Susan Necheles cross-examining Stormy Daniels as former President Trump looks on.

Porn performer Stormy Daniels took the witness stand Tuesday in the hush money case against former President Trump, who looked on as she detailed their alleged sexual encounter and the payment she got to keep it quiet.

Prosecutors allege Trump paid Daniels to keep quiet about the allegations as he ran for president in 2016. Her testimony aired them very publicly as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee seeks to win the White House again.

Trump denies having sex with Daniels , and his lawyers unsuccessfully pushed for a mistrial midway through her testimony.

It was a major spectacle in the first criminal trial of a former American president, now in its third week of testimony in Manhattan.

Here are some takeaways from Daniels’ testimony:

Who is Stormy Daniels?

Stormy Daniels walks through barricades out of court.

The case centers on a $130,000 payment to Daniels from Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, in the final weeks of Trump’s 2016 campaign. Prosecutors say it was part of a scheme to illegally influence the campaign by burying negative stories about him.

Stormy Daniels describes meeting Trump in occasionally graphic testimony

The porn actor’s testimony, even if sanitized and stripped of tell-all details, has been the most-awaited spectacle in Donald Trump’s hush money trial.

May 7, 2024

His lawyers have sought to show that Trump was trying to protect his reputation and family — not his campaign — by shielding them from embarrassing stories about his personal life.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, told jurors that she started exotic dancing in high school and appearing in adult films at age 23, eventually moving to direct more than 150 films and winning a roster of porn industry awards.

Meeting Trump

Daniels testified she first met and chatted with Trump at a 2006 Lake Tahoe celebrity golf outing where her studio was a sponsor.

He referred to her as “the smart one” and asked her if she wanted to go to dinner, she said. Daniels testified that she accepted Trump’s invitation because she wanted to avoid dinner with her co-workers and thought it might help her career. Trump had his bodyguard get her number, she said.

When they met up later in his penthouse, she appreciated that he seemed interested in the business aspects of the industry rather than the “sexy stuff.” He also suggested putting her on his TV show, “The Apprentice,” a possibility she hoped could help establish her as a writer and director.

She left to use the bathroom and was startled to find Trump in his underwear when she returned, she said. She didn’t feel physically or verbally threatened but realized that he was “bigger and blocking the way,” she testified.

“The next thing I know was: I was on the bed,” and they were having sex, Daniels recalled. The encounter was brief but left her “shaking,” she said. “I just wanted to leave,” she testified.

Payments for silence

Daniels was asked if Trump ever told her to keep things between them confidential, and said, “Absolutely not.” She said she learned in 2011 that a magazine had learned the story of their encounter, and she agreed to do an interview for $15,000 to make money and “control the narrative.” The story never ran.

In 2016, when Trump was running for president, Daniels said she authorized her manager to shop the story around but did not initially receive interest from news outlets. She said that changed in October with the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump bragged about grabbing women sexually without asking permission . She said she learned that Cohen wanted to buy her silence.

Mistrial push

Midway through her testimony, Trump’s lawyers moved for a mistrial.

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche argued that Daniels’ testimony about the alleged encounter and other meetings with him had “nothing to do with this case,” and would unfairly prejudice the jury.

The judge rejected it, and he faulted defense attorneys for not raising more of their objections while she was testifying.

Before Daniels took the stand, Trump’s lawyers had tried to stop her from testifying about the encounter’s details, saying it was irrelevant in “a case about books and records.”

Prosecutors countered that Daniels’ testimony gets at what Trump was trying to hide and they were “very mindful” not to draw too much graphic detail. Before Daniels took the stand, they told the judge the testimony would be “really basic,” and would not “involve any details of genitalia.”

While the judge didn’t side with Trump’s lawyers, he acknowledged that some details were excessive. The objections could potentially be used by Trump’s lawyers if he is convicted and they file an appeal.

Cross-examination

Trump’s lawyers tried to attack Daniels’ credibility, suggesting she was motivated by money and that her account has shifted over the years.

“Am I correct that you hate President Trump?” defense lawyer Susan Necheles asked Daniels at one point. Daniels acknowledged she did.

“And you want him to go to jail?” the lawyer asked.

“I want him to be held accountable,” Daniels said. Pressed again whether that meant going to jail, she said: “If he’s convicted.”

The defense pressed Daniels on the fact that she owes Trump hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees stemming from an unsuccessful defamation lawsuit, and on a 2022 tweet in which she said she “will go to jail before I pay a penny.” Daniels dug in at times in the face of pointed questions, forcefully denying the idea that she had tried to extort money from Trump.

Trump whispered frequently to his attorney during Daniels’ testimony, and his expression seemed to be pained at one point as she recounted details about the dinner she says they shared. He shook his head and appeared to say something under his breath as Daniels testified that Trump told her he didn’t sleep in the same room as his wife.

On the way out of the courthouse, Trump called it “a very revealing day.” He didn’t address Daniels’ testimony explicitly but claimed the prosecutors’ case was “totally falling apart.”

Jarring split screen

Trump’s appearance in court Tuesday, like all other days he’s stuck in the courtroom, means he can’t be out on the campaign trail as he runs for president a third time. It’s a frequent source of his complaints, but Daniels’ testimony in particular might underscore how much of a distraction the trial is from the business of running for president.

While Trump was stuck in a Manhattan courthouse away from voters and unable to speak for much of the day, President Biden was attending a Holocaust remembrance ceremony and condemning antisemitism .

It’s an issue Trump has sought to use against Biden in the campaign by seizing on the protests at college campuses over the Israel-Hamas war .

Associated Press writer Price reported from New York, Whitehurst from Washington. AP writers Michael Sisak, Jennifer Peltz, Jake Offenhartz and Alanna Durkin Richer contributed to this story.
