Does education prepare students for the real world?

For all students, attending school is a fundamental part of life, a necessity in preparing us for experiences in years to come, product of the hours upon hours of often arduous exercises and experiences spent inside a classroom. Many have suggested that with numerous technological breakthroughs, and a significant rise in the opportunities offered in the education of today’s day and age, students are becoming increasingly more prepared for latter stages in their life. But is this development evolving at too slow of a rate? Does today’s education system effectively prepare students for the real world?

Ultimately, what good is learning if students don’t use this knowledge learned at school later on in life? It is evident that many parts of learning that students put meticulous time into mastering, with intention of benefiting them later on into adulthood, are simply inaccessible. An experiment by German psychologist, Ebbinghaus, revealed that students forget up to 95% of what they learn in school after just three days. 

Nonetheless, it is debatable that forgetting this content is not to the detriment of pupils; the vast majority of content pupils are educated on is in fact irrelevant to the world we live in.

This is because the world revolves around money.

A student’s knowledge in the field of business and finance is not enriched until the penultimate years of secondary education. Business and finance skills are essential in every adult’s day-to-day life, whereas other subjects that are prioritised many a time are disputably frivolous and far from necessary.

In a standard Dartford Grammar School week for Year 7s, students spend 150 minutes enrolled in Maths lessons despite there being only 80,000 mathematicians worldwide, roughly 1% of the population according to MathOverflow .

However, according to Salary.com , of the ten most populous jobs worldwide, only one of the listed occupations is educated to students at any point in their education period, this being accounting. 

Furthermore, the existing schooling system fails to educate pupils in several imperative areas crucial to a successful transition period of youth to adulthood, such as; negotiation skills, taxation, budgeting and investment skills, basic cooking skills and straightforward survival skills.

But, with a rise in prioritisation in one area comes a deficiency of prioritisation in another. There would undoubtedly be a multitude of different teaching organisations that would be very reluctant in letting go of traditional subjects of learning that they regard as valuable to every student’s education. For example, subject areas of focus such as Shakespeare or calculus are often considered indispensable in the nationwide curriculum.

In addition to this, innumerable students have expressed a fear of independence and the responsibilities that come in the absence of a guardian. Teachers act as chaperones inside the classroom; restricting students in several ways, such as setting deadlines, creating rules, and generally ensuring that there is order in a class. This fails to prepare pupils for college, a significant step up in intensity- entirely unimaginable for many students.

On the other hand, school plays an essential role in a child’s development as an individual, expanding a student’s ability in numerous social and disciplinary skills, such as meeting deadlines, teamwork skills, attendance, punctuality and social interaction with people both similar and different to us.

For instance, whilst playing a certain team sport, a student is not solely indulged in the experience of the sport itself. The event was not merely to improve their skills in that certain sport, but to ameliorate their capability of acting as a team player. Every time that student loses; picking themselves back up again is more valuable than improving in that certain sport itself. Furthermore, it also advances their perseverance and persistence on the road to becoming the best that they can be.

The extensive range of activities a teacher assigns to a student are not simply to be forgotten after the ringing of the school bell, but to utilise skills required in becoming a flourishing, self-reliant adult, such as confident speaking, creativity and a healthy mind-set for personal development.

The endless number of annual events celebrated in school – Christmas, Chinese New Year, Anti-Bullying Day, etc. – are only enriched inside the classroom, and inform students about these events of celebration whilst developing a sense of community and enriching the school experience. The frequent days where students are necessitated to donate a small amount of money has become second nature to them, subconsciously furthering their moral inclination to donate to charity.

School is comprised of many principles akin to the real world; irrespective of a student’s lack of desire to go to school, they legally have to be present. Irrespective of how much a student detests a particular teacher, they are obligated to do as they are told and follow instructions.

It heavily depends on what you consider the purpose of school is.

Does Schools Prepare You for Real Life? High School could simply become one of those places where your knowledge about the world builds up, however not everybody remember being given a chance to spread their wings and fly for the first time. It is not until when students graduates from the restrictive environment where students were led through all kinds of trouble or given a second chance for almost everything, and in the end, the “happiest kids” most people so admired in High School are often the ones who struggle the hardest in the real world.

So is this teachers’ fault? Or is it just the reflection of the lack of control of young people’s life. With these problems in mind, school clearly does not do enough to prepare children to step into the society smoothly. Students may begin to learn the social aspects of the informal real world in school, but that is it. Once students graduate they have to gain experiences to business etiquette and formal socialization outside of school, and most likely all alone.

The worst, is that every year thousands of new high school graduates faces struggles with their money control, most of the time without knowing where their money went after they realized they have none in their hands. This shows that in school, students have too much theory and too little practice. The core and soul of the student is not trained to understand who they should become as they get older. Instead of learning about how an atom could become an ion, they should be learning elementary skills that is needed on a daily bases with communication skills, the feeling of responsibility of every action, and social psychology as examples.

Memorized facts that were hammered into students only give them the score they required to get out of school, which does not represent their score of life. Academic achievements don’t stand much unless University is the next destination. Therefore in a way university degrees are the only truly creditable academic achievements, preferably at a Master’s level. As an example, presidents and celebrities does not get their high school achievements publicized nor advertised, in a way these pride will become invisible as time pass by.

The achievements may look nice and add some weight on your cover letter but once you get in the university they seldom get mentioned ever again. What matters more is the experience which school cannot provide – experience. It is the hours and efforts that you put in to try to fit in to the society that matters, not the shining but heavy armor as high school achievements on students if they were knights. Students need to prove that even without the armors, what’s covered on the inside is gold: it has been smelted and fined, therefore useful, powerful.

Teachers can inspire, but many cannot. A “bad” teacher in this situation will be the ones to bit-by-bit have their students’ individuality and creativity figuratively or sometimes literally beaten out of them. Children living in Canada are extremely lucky compared to the ones living in the United States and China. In the United States 19 states decided that spanking in school is legal. Even worse in China, where over 40% of the students of a 50-student-class have been spanked.

The over use of criticism and corporal punishment in school is too common nowadays and can lead to blockage of a child’s personality development at such a young age. This could turn a sunny child into somebody full of the fire of hatred later on becoming criminals or outlaws in the society, creating trouble. Finding and getting the right teacher with the right teaching method is such an critical part of high school life, yet we always hear complains from students about their teachers; so what is the point of putting a kid with the wrong adult who might not provide the kind of love and knowledge youngsters are lack of?

Mark Twain once said: “I’ve never let my schooling interfere with my education. ” I strongly believe in this sentence since on one hand this quote does not deny that one cannot learn in school. However Twain is saying that there are many things, some of the most significant in life, that you cannot learn in lectures or textbooks are: love, friendship, coping with loss, compromise, the meaning of life, and life in general. In the past decade, there has been a rising debate surrounding education and its ability to prepare students for our rapidly changing world. People have struggled to attain the right and the opportunity to go to school for centuries, because schooling has often been viewed as the primary gateway towards achieving a good life in adulthood, typically in terms of social status and a stable career. However, with globalization and the mounting demands of the global economy, the demographics of numerous countries and the ways humans interact with one another have evolved, and continue to do so. Suddenly, the seemingly diminished value of the school’s typical products – college graduates and their degrees – has caused the relevance and significance of formal education to come under great scrutiny. Yet, in evaluating how well schools around the globe have equipped students with the necessary credentials, skills and attitudes to handle an increasingly competitive, volatile and dangerous world, one must consider various economic and social factors. From this, one will see that formal education has done a considerable amount to ready the younger generation and potential employees for the challenges faced today. 

A common argument against formal education is that it fails to keep up with the changes of the global economy. The advent of technology is quickly making jobs and content matter taught in schools, particularly universities, obsolete by the time students graduate. This problem is further compounded by the lowered barriers of the movement of labour between nations, such that local graduates are facing greater competition against foreigners with possibly better qualifications and experience, in addition to facing a situation where there is an oversupply of degree holders. This is prominent in numerous sectors. One third of recent Australian Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science graduates for instance, were unable to get full-time employment due to “weaknesses in IT university education, and strong competition from a globalised IT labour force”, according to the Mapping Australian Higher Education 2016 report by the Grattan Institute. In Singapore, graduate unemployment has risen from 2.6% to 2.9% due to a graduate glut, according to the Ministry of Manpower. The evidence that the current formal education has not equipped students with the right qualifications and the ability to stand out in a pool of other similar graduates is therefore apparent. 

However, what is often overlooked is the fact that whether or not in formal education is adequately preparing students for the changing economy and greater competition depends on how it has adapted to these challenges. For example, there are policies and courses put in place to diversify education paths by governments of countries like Singapore and Germany, through increasing the number of opportunities to pursue vocational training as an alternative or supplement to skills training. Tertiary education in Singapore can be in the form of attending polytechnics, where students learn job or industry specific knowledge and other valuable soft skills like presentation and negotiation skills. Even in the traditional route of enrolling in junior colleges, the latter is incorporated into the students’ education in the form of Project Work, and curriculum reviews are constantly carried out to ensure that content matter remains as relevant as possible. In Germany, millions of dollars are pumped into vocational training annually, which the majority of post-secondary students pursue instead of university degrees. As a result, they are equipped with the experience and practical skills desired by employers, and this has helped keep youth unemployment at bay at 7% as compared to other European countries with an average of 40%, as of 2015. Therefore, it is not completely accurate to claim that formal education has not done enough to help students become ready for today’s economic challenges, because one must take into account the fact that formal education is similarly evolving to adapt to these challenges. 

Furthermore, in light of the increasing racial and religious divides present throughout the world today, formal education is in fact doing its part in minimizing or at least, reducing, these divisions in culturally diverse societies. Most educational systems considers the holistic development of students in all levels of education, implementing various programmes and encouraging students to take up extra-curricular activities. At the elementary level, the Child Development Project (CDP) is a programme spanning multiple states in America, which aims to foster children’s ethical, social and intellectual development. Reports have shown that students in CDP schools are more skilled at resolving interpersonal conflicts and engage in more pro-social behaviour. Additionally, extra-curricular activities such as sports, performing arts or community clubs not only help build resilience and resourcefulness, but also help inculcate soft skills such as teamwork amongst students as well, which are definitely vital for surviving in an economy that no longer guarantees job security. However, a more important purpose of these programmes is that they help foster social integration, as students gain a sense of pride and belonging to their community and its people. They also become more tolerant of citizens who are racially, ethnically or religiously different from themselves, which play a part in reducing the alienation of the minority. This is especially important in today’s dangerous world, where terrorism has spread in a large pan due to the isolation of misunderstood or stereotyped communities. These programmes are a part of formal education, and thus it cannot be claimed that formal education has done little to ready the students for today’s social challenges as well. 

To conclude, there is a certain truth to claims that some traditional formal education that focuses only on educating students knowledge have become outdated, and hence irrelevant in readying students for the current globalized world plagued with uncertainty and threat. However, there are other aspects of formal education in several societies – from the elementary to university levels – that have also evolved to tackle these social and economic challenges and have revealed considerably encouraging outcomes. Therefore, formal education cannot be easily dismissed as irrelevant to students today.

Every time I hear education reform rhetoric calling for education reforms that "Prepare students for jobs of the 21st century," or reforms that "prepare them for jobs that don't exist yet," I can't help but ask: "What the heck does that look like? How can we prepare students for something we don't even know will come to pass?" These are really shortsighted and, if I may say, stupid ideas.

Education prophets and gurus have been spouting their prophecies and oracles since just before the turn of the century. I won't get into mentioning their names, but many of these have made fortunes peddling their prophecies of economic gloom and doom at education conferences and workshops worldwide, charging exorbitant speaking fees and selling books.

The truth is, "Is any of this blather rather productive? Is it really the role of schools to prepare students by training them for the jobs that currently exist, or will exist in the near future? My answer to that question is a loud and boisterous "NO."

Training students for existing jobs is setting them up for future failure because such jobs disappear according to the changing whims of corporations. Do we train students for jobs that we think are going to become important? My answer again is a resounding "Negative!" It is educational malpractice to be gambling with the lives of kids by teaching them what we think they will be doing 10 years or 20 years or 30 years from now. We aren't seers and haven't reliable crystal balls, so we can't play games with the lives of those we teach.

I agree with Ken Robinson. The core of our job as educators is to prepare them for "Life after school." It's really that simple. They don't need to be narrowly pigeonholed into existing jobs or jobs that "might" exist. They need the "mental, emotional, social and strategic resources" to live in a world that none of us really know about. Instead of rolling the dice with the lives of those we teach, we need to provide an education that allows them to face the unknown.

Starting from the seventh century, school has been something that was glamorized. In fact, even more importance has been placed on school since the United States established a law in 1918 making attendance mandatory. However, school has since lost its usefulness and connection to real life.

Schools do not connect learning material to how they can be used in the outside world.

According to a TED-Ed Blog, “Does school prepare you for the real world?”Aliezah Hulett believes that “Traditional topics such as calculus and Shakespeare should not be neglected, but teachers should be able to ask their class, ‘Now, how can we use this lesson outside of the classroom?’”

Everything that students learn should have lesson connected to it, so students are both more likely to remember the material and benefit from it. For example, a lesson that could be learned from reading Into the Wild is to always go into something prepared and make sure at least one trusted person knows what you are doing and where.

Everyday life skills such as accounting are not taught in required classes.

As mentioned in an article by the Odyssey, “Teaching things like study tips, how to write an effective argumentative essay for a job or college application, or even just how to do taxes are things that need to be taught in today’s schools.”

Although schools do expose students to valuable skills such as perseverance, responsibility, and social skills, they do not account for the skills used in day-to-day life. For example, school does offer classes that teach students how much to tip in a restaurant, how to prepare for a job interview, write a resume, or even how to pay common bills.

Schools do not put enough effort into making sure students have a plan after high school.

The many interviews and surveys conducted by William Damon indicate that “only about one in five young people in the 12- to 22-year age range express a clear vision of where they want to go, what they want to accomplish in life, and why. Almost 60 percent may have engaged in some potentially purposeful activities, or they may have developed some vague aspirations, but they do not have any real commitment to such activities or any realistic plans for pursuing their aspirations.”

High schools generally aim to prepare students for college, but they do not make sure that their students actually go to college or have a plan on how they are going to succeed in life. For instance, it would be helpful to make it a graduation requirement to have a plan for the future, even if its a plan that might change.

Even though schools do teach helpful skills like perseverance, responsibility and social skills, they fail to connect the material to why it matters and struggle to make sure that students can be independent after high school.

How education prepares students for independent life

This assignment seeks to explore how education prepares students for independent life. It will discuss the importance of education in providing young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to live independently. It will also consider how education can help students develop the confidence and resilience needed to cope with the challenges of adult life.

The ability to live independently is a key life skill that all young people should aim to acquire before they leave education. For many young people, this will mean leaving home and living away from their parents or guardians for the first time. This can be a daunting prospect, but if they have been given the right skills and knowledge by their educators, it should be an exciting and empowering experience.

One of the most important things that education can teach young people is how to manage their finances. This is vital for those who are planning to move out of the family home, as they will need to budget for their own accommodation, food and other essentials. They will also need to be able to manage their money so that they can stay out of debt and avoid financial problems in the future.

Another important life skill that education can provide is how to cook healthy meals on a budget. For many young people, leaving home will mean having to cook for themselves for the first time. This can be a challenge, but if they have been taught how to cook nutritious meals that are within their budget, it will be much easier for them to maintain a healthy lifestyle once they leave education.

Moving out of the family home and living independently can be a daunting prospect for many young people. However, if they have been given the right skills and knowledge by their educators, it should be an exciting and empowering experience. Education can help young people to develop the confidence and resilience needed to cope with the challenges of adult life. It can also provide them with the skills and knowledge necessary to live independently, such as how to manage their finances and cook healthy meals on a budget.

So, does education prepare students for an independent life? It most certainly does! By teaching young people the skills and knowledge they need to live independently, education gives them the best possible chance of success in adult life.

Introduction.

In today’s rapidly changing workforce, going to college after high school is advisable. The change in the employment scene makes it clear that more and more jobs now demand a college education. The change, combined with the many advantages of going to college, makes it a logical choice for high school graduates looking to have a happy and rewarding life. College after high school is a win-win choice that can increase an individual’s chances of finding a career, help him become a well-adjusted adult, and add to the health of society.

Although the job market is changing, it is precisely because jobs now require higher knowledge and skills. In the recession of 2007-2010, as jobs requiring a college degree grew rapidly, those for high school graduates or those with some college education declined sharply. This trend underlines the need for a college education to adjust to changing needs in the labor market. Furthermore, the unemployment rates strengthen the incentive of higher education. As of December 2019, the rate of unemployment for people over 25 with bachelor’s degrees was only 1.9 %, which is lower than the rates (listed in descending order) for those with some college or an associate’s degree (2.7 %), high school graduates (3.7 %), and high school dropouts (5. The figures assert that higher education provides an avenue to employment and may guarantee a degree of job security that would be unheard of without a college degree.

Besides studying and learning, colleges become places for professional development and contact. All the resources colleges provide–career services, internships, job fairs, and volunteer programs–help prepare students for the job market. More than 80 % of college students take part in internships before graduating, acquiring practical experience and important contacts for their professions. There are many channels on college campuses for networking, which is an integral part of career development. From fraternities and sororities to clubs, students can make connections that will last beyond graduation.

The most compelling reason to go to college after high school is the significant financial gain it promises. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s calculations, a bachelor’s degree has given an average rate of return over even that from the stock market or housing. During a lifetime, college graduates make $ 570,00 more than high school graduates. Their career earnings are 71 %to 136 %higher. This correlation is reflected in Forbes ‘list of America’s richest people, 85 % of whom have a college education. College is an even more significant financial investment, and college graduates also have lower rates of underemployment than high school-only graduates or those with no high school diploma.

Outside of academics, colleges also develop vital personal skills, which are the key to success in life. The campus communities are many and varied. Students become acquainted with different cultures, religions, and viewpoints, which provide them with a deeper understanding of the world. Via a poll of 11,000 college students, interpersonal skills proved to be the skill most needed in daily life. Furthermore, college graduates’ contributions to society are not limited to their professional lives. Higher productivity, lower crime, better health, and better citizenship come from a college education.

The college offers more than just professional benefits. Its effects also include health and longevity of life. According to studies, 83 percent of college graduates report being in excellent health, up from the high school graduate’s 73. Adults over 65 with college degrees have more years spent in good cognition and fewer years suffering from dementia. This health boost does not stop with the individual but carries over to their family. Also, a college-educated parent can provide a stable environment and support the family unit. However, schools, in particular, should combine traditional college courses with vocational ones.

Going to college after high school is not only a good decision but also a wise strategy. It opens many great doors for one’s career. It offers rich opportunities for personal development while contributing more than its fair share to the well-being of society as a whole. The various advantages described in the previous section of this argument emphasize just how crucial a role higher education plays in teaching individuals to live and lead a vital and rich existence. The figures speak for themselves, and the costs of gaining a college education pale compared to its benefits, making it an essential investment for every high school graduate.

It is true to say that education is generally perceived as the stage preceding independent adult life. On the one hand, education is the element of learning for getting theoretical and practical knowledge that allows to get a good job and be a conscious member of society. Basically, education is oriented towards acquiring necessary skills that define a qualified worker.

On the other hand, education is the preparation for a future independent life that requires experience and practice. So, although the primary aim of getting education lies in getting a professional degree and starting a career, education is connected with such important aspects as the development of communicative skills, preparation for failures and uncertainty, and developing critical thinking that prepare students for real life.

To start with, education becomes not only the sphere of professional development, but also social development for students. Every stage of education involves the type of interaction with others that makes people modify their behavior, change attitudes, and learn to choose a particular approach to everyone (Tokihiro, 2017). Without a doubt, it is impossible to live in a world with millions of people without interacting and working with them. And education becomes the most important stage on the way to learning more about human relationships. Traditionally, solving educational tasks requires constant instruction, consultation, and help which promotes gaining necessary communicative skills for maintaining different kinds of relationships with others. As a result, education can be defined as an essential part of social preparation for life.

Education also prepares students for possible failures and uncertainties in their life. Learning is a constant process of the method of trial and error, which directs students toward the idea of accepting a possible failure and possibilities for success (Roylance, 2017). The educational system focuses on fierce competition and copies the traditional social model in adult independent life. A learning process system based on grades shows the importance of hard work, patience, and dedication as the main factors for success which accelerate the general chances for a better position in life. Education is not about learning particular material for practical purposes, but perceiving the model of life in the real world.

And finally, education requires the development of a learner mindset that defines the further abilities of the student to act reasonably in real life. It is true to say that educational programs “place the greatest value on creativity and the ability to engage in independent, critical thinking” (Excell, 2010). Following the rapid development of technological advances, education prepares a person who can benefit from the informational age, not only absorbing all the information, but taking a critical approach to different questions. Creativity is directly connected with the problem-solving and decision-making that presupposes a high level of student development for living in society. Without doubts, success and life quality depend on the ability to be innovative and select the best solution that will bring positive results.

To sum up, the fact that education is built on getting necessary market skills for jobs cannot limit the general value of education as the preparation for independent life. Due to constant interaction with others, students learn to find a common language with people, selecting an appropriate pattern of behavior. Education and its fierce system stand for the preparation for possible troubles and mistakes in life. And finally, it develops creative thinking and innovative approaches to different situations, which allows making smart decisions and finding the best solutions.

Does Education Prepare Us for Life? Essay Example

From birth, a child is taught to live according to the values of their parents or guardian. They are not given the freedom to choose what they want in life, maybe because they are not old enough to make such decisions. However, as life goes on, they are still taught to live by other people's values and standards. For example, they have to work as per the standards set by their parents, as per the values instilled by their church, the norms of the society, the actions of their peers, etc. Therefore, at no point in life do they get to live their own life, rather, the life that the society wants them to live. Schools are expected to prepare them for the future life and help them tackle challenges that may come about, however, considering that the school does not teach them to become independent beings, but to live by the standards they set, I do not think that schools help to prepare students for life.

The average scenario for the majority of students in the country (if not the world) is that they tend to work hard just enough to get by rather than retain the information given. For example, the common scenario is that a person will just cram for the sake of the exam to get by high school and college and neither of them is prepared for life. The schooling system rarely provides a situation where a student can apply what they learn in class, for instance, simulations or internships, therefore, even in the job market, the students are not prepared, and neither are they prepared in life (Harte par2-6).

Schooling, in the present day, does not prepare students for their careers and life afterward. Instead, the schools treat graduation as the ends (Moser). Schools should instead help students access a cohesive curriculum that helps align their coursework with future goals. For most of the students, and school systems, the students are only enhanced with a means to accrue different credits which may be meaningless if they cannot be used by the student to achieve a certain goal and objective in the future (Moser). In fact, one of the studies notes that the students only rack up the credits with the intention of reaching the finish line by meandering through disconnected courses that are not of any help other than graduation. Instead of over-prioritizing graduation, schools should instead focus on giving the students the knowledge and skills that they may require for them to succeed in life.

In an article in the Forbes, it is clear that school only teaches us knowledge yet the world and life needs wisdom. Instead of equipping students with critical life skills that apply in everyday life like negotiating and managing money, most of the students are taught to memorize information (Duffy). Parents are left with the task of teaching life skills, yet they are less qualified to offer such indispensable skills. In addition, people may be misled into believing that school is the safest way to a great career, however, over the last decade or so, the value of degrees and diplomas has diminished significantly (Duffy). Employees are in pursuit of candidates that can accomplish tasks, which makes schooling less significant in preparation for life which does not help one accomplish such a task

Though schooling has failed in the preparation of students for the future, it has also succeeded in preparing them in other aspects. For example, it gives students a sense of responsibility and gets us ready for some of the inherent limits in the world, for example, time and pressure on us. It also equips the students the social skills and knowledge that is indispensable in dealing with some stressful situations. In other cases, the school may give students perfect reference letters that may go a long way in helping them move to the next stage in life

Though education and schooling, in general, is not satisfactory by any means, we cannot do away with it. Instead, different stakeholders including the students, parents, teachers and respective organizations should look for a way to make it sufficient. That is, improve some of its weaknesses to make it more effective in people's life.
