Rep. Liz Cheney Will Serve On The Select Committee Investigating The Capitol Riot

Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., says she is honored to serve on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Thursday named members to a select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, including Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump.
Cheney was the only Republican named to the panel by Pelosi, who appointed Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., as its chair. Cheney, along with Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, were the only two Republicans to vote in favor of establishing the committee on Wednesday.
The House select committee was approved after Senate Republicans blocked a measure that would have set up a bipartisan commission to look into the events surrounding the attack. But even Republicans who supported the bipartisan commission voted against the select committee, denouncing it as partisan.
Investigations
The capitol siege: the arrested and their stories.
Cheney, who voted to impeach Trump on grounds he incited the violence, said ahead of Wednesday's vote that the bipartisan commission would have been preferred but that the select committee "is our only remaining option."
In a statement following her appointment to the committee, Cheney said she was honored to serve on the panel. "Congress is obligated to conduct a full investigation of the most serious attack on our Capitol since 1814. That day saw the most sacred space in our Republic overrun by an angry and violent mob attempting to stop the counting of electoral votes and threatening the peaceful transfer of power," she said.

The other members of the panel are all Democrats. In addition to Thompson, who is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, the panel includes three veterans of the House impeachment investigations into Trump:
- Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California, chair of the House Administration Committee who served as an impeachment manager.
- Rep. Adam Schiff of California, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee who led the House's first impeachment of Trump.
- Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, who led the second impeachment.
Also named were Reps. Pete Aguilar of California, Stephanie Murphy of Florida and Elaine Luria of Virginia.
GOP Ousts Cheney From Leadership Over Her Criticism Of Trump
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., has the authority to recommend five other Republicans for the committee, who would need to be approved by Pelosi. But McCarthy reportedly warned GOP House members that they would be stripped of their committee assignments if they serve on the panel, according to CNN and others.
In his weekly press conference Thursday , McCarthy said he found it "shocking" that Cheney would take such an assignment from Pelosi, rather than following the Republican conference's lead, and denied "threatening anybody with committee assignments."
He also declined to say when or if he would appoint his own members to the panel.
Pelosi said the committee "will investigate and report upon the facts and causes of the terrorist mob attack on the United States Capitol on January 6th, 2021. It will also be charged with reporting its findings, conclusions and recommendations for preventing future attacks."
As chairman, Thompson will have the power to subpoena witnesses and documents.

Pelosi announces new 'Squad' assignments to House committees
Ocasio-cortez and other leftist democrats named to key house committees.
Nancy Pelosi elected House speaker
The California Democrat clinches fourth term as House speaker; Fox News congressional correspondent Chad Pergram has the latest.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced new committee assignments Tuesday, including several far-left "Squad" members and like-minded Democrat freshman representatives.
"Squad" members Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan will now be on the House Oversight and Reform Committee. The newly elected Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri will join them on that committee, and freshman Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York will be on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.
AOC WON'T RULE OUT PRIMARYING CHUCK SCHUMER IN 2022
"In the 2020 election, the American people overwhelmingly cast their ballots for a historically diverse and dynamic Democratic House Majority that will fight For The People," Pelosi said in a statement. "Reinvigorated by our outstanding Freshmen Members, strengthened by our returning Members and inspired by the people whom we are honored to represent, our Majority is ready to Build Back Better in a way that will advance justice and prosperity for all Americans. Our Committees, enriched by the addition of these Members, are ready to drive transformational progress."
Additionally, the first two openly gay members of Congress, the newly-elected Reps. Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones, both of New York, received assignments as well. Torres was named to the House Homeland Security Committee and Jones to the House Education and Labor Committee.
PROGRESSIVES PRESSURE AOC, OTHER DEMS TO FORCE PELOSI'S HAND ON MEDICARE-FOR-ALL VOTE
"I am honored to be appointed to the House Committee on Homeland Security. When it comes to homeland security, as goes New York City, so goes the rest of the country," Torres said in a statement following the announcement. Torres' district covers sections of The Bronx.
The assignments reflect a leftward shift among Democrats in Congress. Bowman, Bush, Ocasio-Cortez, and Tlaib all received endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America .
In an October 2019 interview with City&State New York , Jones stopped short of calling himself a democratic socialist, but said he viewed himself as "sharing many of the same views as the democratic socialists."
Torres, despite being progressive, does not associate himself with the "Squad," and has been at odds with the Democratic Socialists of America, particularly when it comes to their views of Israel. Torres is pro-Israel, which has become increasingly rare on the left, with Tlaib and fellow "Squad" member Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota being vocal critics of the Jewish state.
"I came to observe that there are activists who have a visceral hatred for Israel as though it were the root of all evil," Torres, 32, told the New York Post in December. "The act of singling out Israel as BDS [the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement] has done is the definition of discrimination."
Torres also denounced Democratic Socialists of America leadership regarding their position on Israel after an interview New York City DSA co-chair Sumathy Kumar gave.

"The leadership of the DSA declines to affirm that the state of Israel should exist. ‘Insane’ is the word that comes to mind," he tweeted in August.
Torres also disagreed with democratic socialists over the "defund the police" movement, which he opposed, according to the Post.

Pelosi proposed $43 million in earmarks for fiscal year 2024, including:
- $10 million to Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy for “Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy”
- $5 million to City and County of San Francisco for “Harvey Milk Plaza/Castro Street Station Redesign”
- $5 million to San Francisco Fire Department for “San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) Fire Training Facility”

These are earmark requests which may or may not survive the legislative process to becoming law. Most representatives from both parties requested earmarks for fiscal year 2024. Across representatives who requested earmarks, the median total amount requested for this fiscal year was $39 million.
Earmarks are federal expenditures, tax benefits, or tariff benefits requested by a legislator for a specific entity. Rather than being distributed through a formula or competitive process administered by the executive branch, earmarks may direct spending where it is most needed for the legislator's district. All earmark requests in the House of Representatives are published online for the public to review. We don’t have earmark requests for senators. The fiscal year begins on October 1 of the prior calendar year. Source: Appropriations.house.gov . Background: Earmark Disclosure Rules in the House
Ideology–Leadership Chart
Pelosi is shown as a purple triangle ▲ in our ideology-leadership chart below. Each dot is a member of the House of Representatives positioned according to our ideology score (left to right) and our leadership score (leaders are toward the top).
The chart is based on the bills Pelosi has sponsored and cosponsored from Jan 3, 2019 to Apr 17, 2024. See full analysis methodology .
Enacted Legislation
Pelosi was the primary sponsor of 9 bills that were enacted. The most recent include:
- H.R. 3325 (117th): To award four congressional gold medals to the United States Capitol Police and those who protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
- H.R. 1085 (117th): To award three congressional gold medals to the United States Capitol Police and those who protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
- H.R. 3119 (111th): To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 867 Stockton Street in San Francisco, California, as the “Lim Poon Lee Post Office”.

- H.R. 2457 (103rd): Winter Run Chinook Salmon Captive Broodstock Act of 1993

Does 9 not sound like a lot? Very few bills are ever enacted — most legislators sponsor only a handful that are signed into law. But there are other legislative activities that we don’t track that are also important, including offering amendments, committee work and oversight of the other branches, and constituent services.
We consider a bill enacted if one of the following is true: a) it is enacted itself, b) it has a companion bill in the other chamber (as identified by Congress) which was enacted, or c) if at least about half of its provisions were incorporated into bills that were enacted (as determined by an automated text analysis, applicable beginning with bills in the 110 th Congress).
Bills Sponsored
Pelosi recently introduced the following legislation:
- H.Res. 742: Expressing the profound sorrow of the House of Representatives on the death of …
- H.Res. 621: Expressing support for the designation of August 3, 2023, as “Tony Bennett Day”.
- H.Con.Res. 118 (117th): Authorizing the use of the rotunda of the Capitol for a ceremony …
- H.Res. 626 (117th): Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives regarding the terrorist attacks …
- H.Res. 503 (117th): Establishing the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the …
- H.R. 3325 (117th): To award four congressional gold medals to the United States Capitol Police …
- H.R. 1085 (117th): To award three congressional gold medals to the United States Capitol Police …
Most legislation has no activity after being introduced.
Voting Record
Pelosi voted yea, pelosi voted nay, pelosi voted no, pelosi voted aye, missed votes.
From Jun 1987 to Apr 2024, Pelosi missed 1,125 of 17,640 roll call votes, which is 6.4%. This is much worse than the median of 2.0% among the lifetime records of representatives currently serving. The chart below reports missed votes over time.
We don’t track why legislators miss votes, but it’s often due to medical absenses, major life events, and running for higher office.

Politico: Pelosi announcing appointments to policy committees
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will announce new committee assignments Friday for nearly three dozen Democrats.
The panel assignments will serve to put younger, more newly elected Democrats on 10 policy committees.
"The Democratic Members recommended to serve on the following committees have proven themselves to be forward-looking leaders who embody the diversity, drive, and vitality of our caucus," said Pelosi (D-Calif.). "They will bring fresh perspective and new energy to each of these committees, and we look forward to having their intelligence and ideas working in these new positions, strengthening our economy and securing our country."
Reps. Ann Kirkpatrick of Arizona, Pete Aguilar of California and Stacey Plaskett of the Virgin Islands will join the Agriculture committee. Both Aguilar and Plaskett are freshmen while Kirkpatrick was elected first elected in 2009 but returned to the House in 2013 after an election defeat in 2012.
The Budget Committee will include Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan, a freshman and wife of former Rep. John Dingell. Freshman Rep. Ted Lieu of California will also serve on the high-profile committee.
Reps. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, Alma Adams of North Carolina and Mark DeSaulnier of California will all serve on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
The Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure will gain two sophomore members, Reps. Jared Huffman of California and Julia Brownley of California. And the committees on Oversight and Government Reform and Natural Resources will each gain one freshman: Reps. Brenda Lawrence of Michigan and Don Beyer of Virginia, respectively.
Sophomore Rep. Scott Peters of California will join the Judiciary Committee.
The three committees tasked with oversight and legislation for the military and national security will see nearly 10 freshmen join their ranks. Rep. Tim Walz of Minnesota, elected in 2007, will join the Armed Services Committee, joined by sophomore Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas and freshmen Reps. Don Norcross of New Jersey, Ruben Gallego of Arizona, Mark Takai of Hawaii, Gwen Graham of Florida, Brad Ashford of Nebraska and Seth Moulton of Massachusetts.
Sophomore Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey and freshmen Reps. Kathleen Rice of New York and Norma Torres of California will join the Homeland Security Committee. The Foreign Affairs Committee will see the addition of Reps. Robin Kelly of Illinois, a sophomore, and Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania, a freshman.
Democrats lost 13 committee seats after being trounced during the mid-term elections. The assignments announced on Friday don't include the five so-called "A" committees — Ways and Means, Rules, Appropriations, Energy and Commerce and Financial Services — which were previously announced.

Pelosi announces creation of select committee on January 6
By Zak Hudak , Grace Segers
Updated on: June 24, 2021 / 7:14 PM EDT / CBS News
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday the creation of a select committee to examine the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol . She told House colleagues of her intention to do so earlier on Thursday morning.
"It is imperative that we establish the truth of that day, and ensure that an attack of that kind cannot happen and that we root out the causes of it all. The select committee will investigate and report on the facts and the causes of the attack and it will make report recommendations for the prevention of any future attack," Pelosi said during her weekly press conference. She said that the investigation would take "two paths": looking at the "root causes" of the attack, and the failures in security of the Capitol.
Pelosi waited to make a determination for several weeks because she would have preferred that the Senate take another vote on a bipartisan bill to create an independent 9/11-style commission. Senate Republicans blocked the bill in May, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has not called another vote on the measure.
"I asked, leading up to today: Is there a chance for it to pass? We gave it so much time. Not soon, not likely, maybe someday. In the meantime, I'm hopeful that that could still happen at some point," Pelosi said.
Unlike an independent commission that would not have comprised elected officials, Democrats will control the select committee. There will still be Republican members on the committee, but Democrats will have the majority and therefore, they will also have subpoena power. Select committees are created by a resolution to conduct investigations or consider measures, usually on a specific topic.
Five people died during the attack on January 6, including a Capitol police officer whose death was later ruled to be from natural causes . The partner and mother of that officer, Brian Sicknick, has advocated for creating an independent commission. Over 100 Capitol and Metropolitan police officers were injured, and two Capitol Police officers died by suicide after the attack.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said Tuesday that more than 480 defendants have been arrested in connection with the attack. In court, the government has also indicated that prosecutors expect to charge up to 550 people.
It's unclear whether any Republicans will support the creation of a select committee because they may argue that Democrats would use the committee as a purely political exercise. Previous select committees, like the 2012 select committee on Benghazi led by Republicans, have devolved into partisanship.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy argued to reporters earlier this week that Senate committees were already conducting bipartisan investigations and said whatever decision Pelosi made about a select committee would be "political."
Pelosi acknowledged "it would have been preferable to have an outside commission," but said "I have no intention of walking away from our responsibility."
"I hope that Kevin will appoint responsible people to the committee," she said.
Pelosi did not say who would lead the committee, nor did she lay out a specific timeline for it to release its findings, saying "the timetable will be as long as it takes." The bipartisan commission would have been required to submit its findings by the end of the year.
The bipartisan bill to create an independent commission passed in the House with dozens of Republican votes, but failed in the Senate. The vote to advance the bill failed by 54 to 35, well short of the 60 votes needed. Republican Senators Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rob Portman, Mitt Romney, and Ben Sasse supported advancing the bill. All but Portman voted to convict former President Trump on the impeachment charge of incitement of insurrection in February.

Pelosi Statement on Final Report by Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the release of the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress' final report:
"The Modernization Committee's final report marks the culmination of a four-year effort to strengthen the Congress' ability to fulfill our Constitutional role as first among co-equal branches of government. Through its tireless work, the Select Committee has charted this institution's path forward: identifying opportunities for reform while serving as a model of collaborative, bipartisan lawmaking.
"Under the leadership of Chair Derek Kilmer, the Select Committee has drawn invaluable insights from every corner of the House community, including Members, staff, experts and constituents across the nation. That diligent fact-finding has yielded more than 200 recommendations, from reasserting the power of the purse through a new Community Project Funding initiative to bolstering the recruitment and retention of diverse, talented staff. Guided by the Select Committee's vision and values, the House has proudly implemented 65 percent of those recommendations since 2019 – delivering positive, concrete and lasting change.
"The House owes the entire Select Committee a debt of gratitude for their unwavering commitment to strengthening the institution we cherish so deeply. House Democrats are resolved to carry on their vital mission: ensuring the People's House works efficiently, transparently and effectively For The People."

Nancy Pelosi to Publish New Book, The Art of Power , About Tenure as Speaker of the House
The California representative and former Speaker of the House will publish her book this summer
Craig Barritt/Getty, Simon & Schuster
Representative Emerita Nancy Pelosi is scheduled to publish a new book this year. The congresswoman, 84, will release a new book entitled The Art of Power in August 2024, publisher Simon & Schuster announced on Thursday, April 18. The volume will detail Pelosi’s prominent political career, which spans from her election as the 52nd Speaker of the House in 2007 — and serving as the first woman Speaker for eight years — to her current role as the representative for California’s 11th District. The Art of Power , per a statement shared with PEOPLE, shares Pelosi’s perspective on what it takes to make history. Pelosi did so herself when she became the first woman to be chosen to lead a party in Congress in 2003, and later throughout her tenure as Speaker of the House (Pelosi held the role twice). She stepped down as Speaker in 2023, but announced plans for reelection as the Democratic House leader in 2024.
Simon & Schuster
Throughout her tenure as Speaker of the House, Pelosi spearheaded efforts on a variety of issues, including attempting to save the U.S. economy in 2008 and leading the fight for transforming health care. Pelosi famously pushed crucial legislation through Congress, including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Acts, and led efforts to create and enact the American Rescue Plan during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pelosi will also reflect on key moments throughout her career, including the Jan. 6 2021 insurrection . The congresswoman will describe her firsthand experiences on that day, including how she fought to get the National Guard to the Capitol, and how she later directed efforts for the Jan. 6 investigations.
Pelosi will also write of the harrowing 2022 invasion of her San Francisco home, and its aftermath and effects on her family. Pelosi's husband, Paul, was injured by an assailant during the invasion.
Kimberly White/Getty
The Art of Power will highlight Pelosi’s “fighting spirit” that has cemented her legacy as a leading political figure.
Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. “People always ask me how I did what I did in the House,” Pelosi said in a statement. “In The Art of Power , I reveal how—and more importantly, why.” The Art of Power will be published on Aug. 6 by Simon & Schuster and is available for preorder now, wherever books are sold.
