In fact, 85 percent of a child's brain develops by age five, before a child even enters school. Early childhood specialists have a tremendous influence on shaping a child's future, helping young children to thrive, learn and transition successfully to elementary school.

The 5 Best Online Education Degree Providers in Florida

Florida has a total of 14 education degree-granting institutions that provide online education degrees. These range from community colleges offering associates in early childhood development or human services, to nationally ranked universities that offer a wide spread of masters level and education endorsement-level programming. While future students may want to go to the “best” online institution in their state for education degrees, they should take some to double check what exact degrees are offered by their institution of choice at the directory of all online education degrees at the bottom of the page. To select the following top five universities, we’ve looked at two factors: the number of fully online education degrees offered by an institution, and an “academic prestige” score. The academic prestige score takes into account metrics such as average amount of financial need received, average class sizes, admissions standards, and the percentage of faculty holding terminal degrees in their field. Also note that the tuition numbers below are just indicators of relatively how expensive or affordable a college is. The tuition numbers below, specifically, are the in-state (where applicable) undergraduate yearlong tuition rates for education degrees. Many universities, however, have similar tuition rates at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

What is early childhood education.

There is a rising trend in parents bringing their young children to school. A few decades ago, school typically started at age 5. Today, parents bring their children age 3 or even younger to daycare centers. Some even bring infants. This is largely due to the growing awareness that it is never too early to start learning. Also, there is a growing awareness of special needs in some children.

The state of Florida has risen to the challenge of providing for the age-appropriate and developmentally-appropriate learning needs of children. One of these responses is the VPK or the Voluntary Prekindergarten Program. This program helps to regulate and ensure the quality of child centers and learning institutions that accept these very young minds under their care and instruction.

One of the regulations instilled by the state is a set of requirements that every applicant must comply with. Once passed, these will prove that the applicant has the necessary knowledge and skills required to provide the needs of every child placed under their care.

There are a few steps required by the state before one can pursue a career as an early childhood education teacher. Every requirement and standard must be complied with. These are safeguards so that every student receives quality and appropriate education based on needs and developmental level.

Step 1. Earn Your Degree

In Florida, teacher licensure applicants must have completed an approved teacher education program. These programs culminate in a degree in early childhood education or sometimes a higher-level degree. Any approved teacher preparation program will include at least 10 weeks of student teaching experience before graduation

Florida’s department of Education lists three areas of certification that allow you to teach the ECE age group. These are Preschool Education (birth-age 4), Prekindergarten/Primary Education (age 3-Grade 3), and Elementary Education (grades K-6). You can earn one of these certifications by completing an associated postsecondary program. With certification in one of these areas, you can step into the lead of any ECE classroom.

Compare Online Early Childhood Education Schools

For those who have a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field, you can still gain licensure to teach. This is achieved through the completion of an applicable program from one of the Educator Preparation Institutes in Florida. This program will help you complete all the preparatory requirements for teaching certification.

Step 2. Pass Your Exams

In Florida, a teaching candidate must pass the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) in order to teach preschool in the state.

The first test is called the General Knowledge Test and it includes (4+ hours all together):

  • English Language Skills Subtest
  • Essay Subtest
  • Mathematics

This will be followed by an exam for Prekindergarten/Primary, Preschool Education, or Elementary Education test, depending on the area of specialization desired.

The Prekindergarten/Primary Exam contains these subtests (4.5 hours all together):

  • Language Arts and Reading
  • Developmental Knowledge

The Elementary Education Exam contains these subtests (4.5 hours all together):

  • Social Science

The Preschool Education Exam gives you 60 minutes and has no subtests. Passing any of these will qualify you for Florida teacher certification. Registration and examination is done via Pearson Vue.

Online Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education Programs Ranking Guidelines

We selected the below accredited online early childhood education programs based on quality, types of courses offered, faculty, rankings, awards, and reputation, including the schools reputation for providing quality online degrees.

Our Methodology

Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That's why we've developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.

Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools  cannot buy better rankings  at TBS.

While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you're getting when you use one of our rankings.

  • Affordability
  • Online Enrollment

Data Sources

The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.

The  Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the  College Navigator .

Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from  AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.

Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology

About our ranking factors.

Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.

Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.

We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.

  • Collapse All

Academics - 75%

Affordability - 15%, online enrollment - 10%.

In all our school rankings and recommendations, we work for objectivity and balance. We carefully research and compile each ranking list, and as stated in our advertising disclosure, we do NOT permit financial incentives to influence rankings. Our articles never promote or disregard a school for financial gain.

If you have questions about our ranking methodology, please feel free to connect with our staff through  contact page .

We thank you for your readership and trust.

The Advantages of Studying Early Childhood Education

While graduates with associate degrees can pursue early childhood education employment, a bachelor's-level education can provide additional benefits. Bachelor's degree-holders can work as lead preschool teachers, preschool directors, and elementary teachers for K-3 students. Individuals with associate degrees can only work in lower-level education jobs, like assistant preschool teachers.

Earning a master's in early childhood education can deliver even more opportunities, such as roles in advanced fields like curriculum development or principalship. Graduates can also qualify for college professor employment to teach early childhood education.

For most early childhood education careers, a bachelor's degree will suffice. If you're undecided about pursuing a higher degree, consider the potential salaries of careers in early childhood education.

  • Program Cost: As you research tuition and other fees, consider that private institutions typically cost more than public schools. However, you should be wary of programs that are significantly cheaper than most, as they might not be accredited. Online school rankings can help you evaluate cost and quality.
  • Transfer Policies: Always check a school's transfer policies. While you might feel set on a certain school or program, keeping your options open can be beneficial. Most accredited schools have transferable credits, but policies differ among institutions.
  • School Size and Type: Before enrolling in an early childhood education degree online program, consider each school's public vs. private status. If you prefer closer attention from professors, a private institution may offer a better option. If you don't mind larger class sizes, you can save money by attending a state school.
  • Program Length: If you want to focus most of your attention on completing your degree quickly, enroll in a full-time or accelerated program. If you have a busy schedule and prefer a slower pace, enroll in a part-time program. Typically, full-time students complete bachelor's degrees in four years, while part-time students take 6-8 years.
  • On-Campus Requirements: Some courses require supervised tests or in-person advisor meetings. If you want to study from the comfort of your home or live in a different part of the country from your university, pay close attention to on-campus requirements.

Accreditation for online early childhood education degrees.

Always ensure that your online master's in early childhood education is accredited. Accreditation occurs at the institutional and programmatic levels. Institutional accreditation indicates that the school has undergone a voluntary evaluation of its student resources, outcomes, and curriculums.

Attending an accredited institution ensures that you can receive federal financial aid and transfer credits between schools. Programmatic accreditation focuses on departments and programs within schools and usually serves as a secondary accreditation. The primary accreditors for early childhood education programs are the Teacher Education Accreditation Council and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation .

The U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) oversee accreditation agencies to ensure their integrity. To learn more, check out CHEA's list of accrediting bodies for private, state, and community colleges.

Courses in an Online Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education Program

  • Principles of Development in Infancy: In this class, students learn the normal stages of development over the first few months of a child's life. This course also covers methods of recognizing and intervening in developmental problems that may begin during infancy.
  • Health, Safety, and Nutrition: Enrollees learn about what children should eat, how to prevent dangerous accidents, and how to foster a healthy learning environment. When adults meet children's physical needs, kids can focus on learning and developing.
  • Child and Family Development: Children grow and change significantly from ages 3-6. In this course, students learn children's stages of growth and how family development can affect the process. Enrollees explore normal characteristics for each early childhood stage, allowing them to identify children who may have developmental delays.
  • Relationships in Today's Families: No two family units have the same dynamics, and learning about the differences can help educators understand how to best communicate with and motivate young children. Unfortunately, some children come from broken homes, and teachers must be sensitive to a child's home life.
  • Classroom Experience: Online early childhood education programs require real-world classroom experience. In this class, students work in classroom settings under lead teachers' supervision. Enrollees develop familiarity with creating and implementing lesson plans.

The  Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Early Childhood Education  degree program prepares students to become highly effective pre-kindergarten through grade 3 teachers for public and private schools. The program offers courses that focus on providing developmentally appropriate teaching practices to future educators.
