Technology writing task 2 – questions that reference email and communication.

Remember that a lot of common topics go together – a technology task 2 might also mention the internet, communication or education. You might get a task 2 technology and social media question. On the other hand, you might see a writing task 2 related to technology that doesn’t even mention the word ‘technology’ – like the one below!

  • E-mail is now the easiest way to communicate with families and friends all over the world. Some people say that it does not have the sincerity of handwritten letters. Do you agree or disagree? Give specific details and examples to support your opinion.
  • With the speed and ease of viral communication do you think it will totally replace papers and letters in their old form? If that happens, will it be for the better? Explain and provide specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

IELTS Writing Task Questions about Technology and science

  • There are opinions that technology and science are beneficial but also destructive. Due to technological advancement, mankind has irrevocably ruined nature and environment and affected the climate. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

Technology and Education

You might also see a writing task 2 about technology and education. Again, here, the word ‘technology’ is not even mentioned, as the question is referring to the internet.

  • In the future people will not need to have schools, galleries, museums or libraries because everything from education to culture and entertainment will be available online. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
  • Being literate in technology or the internet is so popular that many believe that it will no longer be necessary to read conventional books as the main source of material for education. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

Technology and Society

IELTS writing task 2 technology topics with a requirement to agree or disagree can be challenging when there is not always a clear argument but it’s important to remember that the examiner is not looking for a list of reasons, but rather a clear main point with supporting arguments.

  • Advancement in technology helps to improve the standard of life. Meanwhile, according to data, while the average change in society in developing countries is positive, in richer countries this can be exactly the opposite. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this?

Need IELTS band score help?

  • In the developed world, technological progress is increasing. What problems will this cause for individuals and society? Suggest some measures that could be taken to reduce the impact of radical technological advancements.
  • At the present time, artificial intelligence of some technologies is advancing rapidly, especially in the driving sector. Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the disadvantages?

Your Guide to IELTS Band 7

IELTS Model Essay: Technology and Relationships

This model essay is on the topic of the effect of technology on the kinds of relationships we form. It’s a 2-part, or IELTS direct question essay.  It is taken from Cambridge IELTS 8 .

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology. In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make? Has this become a positive or negative development?

I will start by taking you through my 4 Step Planning Approach . This will help you to understand the structure of my essay and the ideas in it. Then you can read my essay. Finally I have included a list of useful vocabulary in my essay.

I hope you find it useful!

IELTS Model Essay Technology Effect On Relationships

First, I will carefully plan the essay.

Step 1: Understand My Task

What is the topic about.

The topic is about how technology has changed the types of relationships people make .

The phrase “types of” is important – it is encouraging you to talk about connections between people , rather than just intimate relationships (e.g. boyfriend / girlfriend), i.e. about relationships in a general sense. I think you need to cover this aspect in order to get a Band 7 or higher.

What kind of technology has changed relationships? I suppose things like smartphone, the Internet and also apps on phones and computers.

What is the topic NOT about?

The task is NOT about how technology has changed communication (although this will probably come into your discussion). It’s about how it has changed relationships .

How should I respond?

My task is to answer the 2 questions, so I need to:

  • say how technology has affected relationships
  • say whether this is positive or negative

Reword the task

It’s often useful to re-word the task to make it simpler and clearer, so i could reword the task like this:

How has technology (computers, phones, apps) affected relationships? Is this good or bad?

Step 2: Decide My Position

So what do I think? What are my answers to these 2 questions? What are my main ideas? This should just be a quick step, but you will probably start to expand your ideas in this step.

How has technology affected relationships?

  • easier to stay in touch with people all over the world
  • you can have a following / audience of millions via social media

Is this positive or negative?

Generally positive.

Step 3: Expand My Ideas

Now I need to expand or develop my ideas . This is crucial if you are aiming for a Band 7 or higher in IELTS Writing Task 2 .

Step 4: Structure My Essay

  • smartphone apps like zoom, whatsapp and skype offer cheap or free communication that lets you text or call people on the other side of the world instantly
  • in the past, letters could take weeks and international phone calls were expensive
  • people on tiktok have built following of hundreds of thousands

Generally positive:

  • Can stay in touch with family, friends, former colleagues easily, so can sustain close relationships
  • People build relationships with wider network of people, meaning access to greater social capital
  • But a lot of these relationships quite tenuous and fleeting

So that’s my plan. It’s quite detailed…which means that when I write I can focus on my language, not my ideas.

Technology has changed the kinds of relationships people make between each other in significant ways over the last twenty years. This essay will consider two of these changes and whether or not these have had positive repercussions.

One of the major impacts of technology is that it has enabled us to easily stay in touch with friends and family on the other side of the world. Thirty years ago, if you wanted to communicate with a friend or relative, you would either have written a letter (which could have taken weeks to arrive) or made an expensive international phone call. Today, we can simply send a text message on WhatsApp or call them on Zoom. These technologies are either free or low-cost, and instantaneous. So it makes maintaining relationships over a long distance much easier.

Another big change is that social media has made it possible for us to build a relationship with thousands and sometimes millions of people. Some people on TikTok, for example, have quickly built an audience of millions and most people on Facebook have hundreds of friends at least. This kind of audience-style relationship was rare before the advent of social media.

I think that in general, these changes have been positive. It is now easy to maintain and build relationships with relatives, friends and work colleagues that you may previously have lost contact with. And it’s also possible to build a wider social network of people which you can tap into for advice and support. Access to this pool of social capital was almost impossible in the past.

However, it is also true that many of these relationships, especially those on social media, can be fleeting and tenuous. Is a Facebook “friend” really a friend or just a passing acquaintance? It’s therefore important that people don’t allow such relationships to displace close, nurturing friendships.

On the whole though, technology’s affect on our ability to stay in touch with people all over the world and to access a wider range of people has been positive.

Modern Technology Is Changing Our World | IELTS Essay Sample

how technology has changed our lives essay ielts

Sample essay

Technology has certainly brought people closer by making geographical boundaries irrelevant. Some people argue that this closeness is destroying cultural identities and making all nations look similar. I agree with this view to a great extent. People everywhere now wear the same kind of clothes and eat the same food.

Cultural identities are fast disappearing. By simply looking at the costume of a person, it is no longer possible to tell an Indian from an American or an African. Everyone everywhere now wears the same outfits. Likewise, they eat the same food. They read the same books, listen to the same music and watch the same movies. This similarity has certainly fostered better understanding among people of different nations. It has boosted trade and tourism. It has brought nations closer. On the down side, it has also destroyed cultural differences.

The food we eat, the costumes we wear, the festivals we celebrate and the languages we speak are all closely linked to our culture. They are our cultural identity. When people everywhere follow the same lifestyle, this cultural identity is lost. This is certainly a downside of the proliferation of technology. The worst affected by this development are the young generation. They are no longer familiar with their native culture. Many of them even show total disdain for the culture and lifestyle of their grandparents. This also hurts their national pride.

In conclusion, technology not only brought people closer but also made them all look, talk, act and behave alike. Hence, I totally agree with the argument that modern technology is annihilating cultural differences.

Sample Essay

The impacts of digital communication on human relationships have long been a topic of controversy. From my perspective, modern means of communication may sabotage one’s relationships with other people.

[do_widget id=custom_html-24]

The most typical example of today’s communication technology is the mobile phone. Originally designed to provide people with instant access to telecommunication, it has become indispensable for most people in modern society. Nowadays, various features such as built-in cameras and interactive games have been added to the mobile phone, making it multifunctional and thus even more popular. However, I believe the omnipresence of mobile phones in particular, or digital communication tools in general, often interferes with the bonding time that people share and thus has a negative influence on interpersonal relationships. There is compelling evidence for my belief. If people use mobile phones for work purposes, business calls may disrupt any real-life conversations they have. This is the case for millions of working people who may have overlooked the importance of having smooth and uninterrupted conversations with other people. They may be unaware that relationships are at risk of eroding when people spend less quality time with each other. Also, if people use mobile phones to play games, the constant urge to complete game missions may disengage them from social gatherings. For example, many teenagers sacrifice real-life socialising time for mobile game playing time. In the long term, this would be likely to cause friends to drift apart.

[do_widget id=custom_html-47]

Some people use mobile phones mainly for virtual social networks, and notifications and messages from these sites may prevent them from having intimate conversations with their loved ones. There are many real examples of couples on the verge of breaking up because one or both partners have grown overly attached to social network applications on mobile phones, and they find it hard to maintain a sense of intimacy.

Although most people use mobile phones for all personal as well as professional reasons and consequently, they need to pay constant attention to their phone, however, potentially isolating those in their company. In this way, mobile phones may dull real-life interactions and affect relationships as a result.

In brief, the constant distraction of modern communication devices such as mobile phones may cause the breakdown of numerous social relationships.

Ever since the era of technology emerged, life has changed dramatically. Today where every second thing is being operated by digital contrivances, some ill effects have come floating by, as well. Generally, people put forth that the current digital scenario and communication devices and interfaces particularly have impeded and halted conventional interactions. I agree with this notion and shall be illustrating the same in the forthcoming paragraphs.

It is an inevitable truth that digitization has made our arduous lives extremely cosy and that it nearly ineluctable tangent that we all are on today. However, the impact it has had on social relationships are undeniably true. Family gatherings, outings and various other aspects of live communication have been trampled down upon with the uprising of online social networks. One to one discussion has been displaced by social media, the family time has been subjugated by facetime and webcams. Mobile phones have been the major disruptive cause in evicting out the person to person verbal communication. Owing to this sociability and amicability has been corroded off to substantial capacity.

Secondly, people while being there in an online medium and e-communication transmission mask their realities to a larger level where it is hard to discern as to what one person is gravely going through behind the lenses. Moreover, a sense of harmony and connectedness has been deeply lacerated as one can’t get through the emotional streamline of others as well as it is in the case of one to one conversation. In addition to that, work from home, online schooling and internet parties can never compare and become congruent to the essence of offline setup. The gist and feel of very communication without screen barriers have definitely been exacerbated by the day to day unstinted techno-growth. Due to this, the communication gaps, misconstruction, misconception and misunderstandings have been preponderant and therefore, the relations have turned rancorous. For instance, many times the people who tend to be at loggerheads, resolve and laugh out the grudges they had post figuring out how paltry the issue was that could have never had been aired had the communication was in an offline environment.

Though online communication tools are the need of the hour, the way it has obliterated and debilitated the lines of personal communication with a tinge of conversing effectively is indisputably true as well.

Therefore, in the conclusion, it could be stated that the layer of social harmony and personal belongingness has indeed been excruciated by the pillars and towers of online networking, where people communicate only when they are extremely in need of, thereby making them recluse and secluded.

Hi. Hope you are well. I was wondering if it is okay to write ” I rather/partly agree with this statement ” in “Do you agree or disagree?” questions. More specifically in terms of Task Response and Coherence and Cohesion.

Many Thanks

Hello Setareh The expression suggested is very much mechanical in nature for coherence, thus should be avoided if you require bands above 7. Regarding Task Response, you can only use such an expression for the question which states ” to how much extent you agree or disagree”. In the era of digitalisation, the huge reliance on information technology to change the world in a unique way is no longer a fresh perspective. The advent of AI adoption and vast social media interaction is partly blended into human’s daily life. As a result, it ramps up the globalisation and distance between people is getting shorter as digital technology integrates people around the globe. On the flip side, negative consequences have been imposed on deteriorating social relationship. Regarding this statement, I am on the same wavelength with the stated opinion by providing strong reasoning as below.

First, the innovation of present communication technology has established an adamant fact that it changes human lives by accelerating the socioeconomic changes. There are a lot of built-in apps and online games available for people to explore by using their sophisticated mobile phones. Nonetheless, excessive reliance on the mobile phones will aggravate the fundamental relationship-building with people in real life. According to a publication, the teenagers and young adults have spent an average of 4 hours daily on their mobile phones. The result indicates that they devote most of their leisure time on gluing to the mobile screens apart from working or studying. Moreover, most parents reveal the truth that their children enter their rooms once they are back from school. This negative and worrying phenomenon has been invading the original social life as an adult, and they are ignoring in fostering a genuine relationship with their loved ones through face-to-face conversation. In the meantime, the addictive behaviours on playing online games among teenagers inhibit their intellectual skills as this may impact how they think, interact and work when they are entering the working society.

Second, the online education and various virtual meetings have been promoted since the outbreak of the COVID-19 which restrict people from engaging in real world environment. The rise in the digital adoption has particularly provided convenience to majority of people as they have the chance to obtain learning certificates from prestigious institutions in the view of ensuring a stable internet connection during the lesson. Despite these conveniences, the virtual studying environment is simply incomparable to the physical learning condition as most of the lectures could not detect the implicit or verbal behaviours of the students to acknowledge whether they are fully comprehending their lectures. This certainly makes the learning outcome less desirable compared to conventional teaching method. For instance, I am the living example who currently pursuing an online MBA program. In fact, I have lost the real opportunities to have a post-class discussion with my classmates or lecturers as there was a time limit being imposed on the live session. In accordance with these constraints, I had to post my questions by sending e-mail and Whatsapp messages which increases the communication cost due to longer time taken for replies. This poses some barriers on me in fortifying relationship with faculty members and fellow classmates.

As whole, I am advocating strongly that unintended social consequences are eminent due to extensive use of advanced communication technology. Although online communication provides fresh alternatives to expand the choice of communication medium, this tool should not be supplanting the primary use of communication tool via physical interaction. As a fact, digital communication tool is providing supplementary outlet for the role of real-world communication when someone is not available for meet-ups.

It has brought a  paradigm shift  in the way people spend their lives. Making and receiving payments was a daunting task , but nowadays, life has become easy due to the QR code facility.

Both business owners and consumers have benefitted from it.

What benefits did it bring ?

Firstly it has brought convenience to our lives. These days people have this uncanny knack for carrying their smartphones with them, wherever they go. With QR codes, they need not have their wallet all the time.

Moreover, it saves time because whenever I see something urgent, I buy. For example, I do not carry my wallet during the morning walk. And this QR facility helps me buy fresh vegetables during that time through my smartphone .

Thirdly it leads to ease in doing business. Now small vendors do not need to keep change while doing cash transactions. Even customers find it easy to pay without looking for the correct currency denomination.

And explain if it is more important for older or younger people.?

It is intuitively true that this invention is a boon for people from all walks of life. Because there is no denying this  conviction  that we have to use money irrespective of our age.

Although numerous inventions have taken place in the last 200 years, there is one breakthrough that brought a  paradigm shift  in people’s lives.

What is it?

The invention I am going to talk about is of Aeroplane. The Wright brothers invented it in the year 1911. Before that, numerous researchers tried to invent the flying machine with little success.

But Wright brothers worked with determination, dedication, and discipline to invent the machine which could defy gravity.

The invention of the Aeroplane changed people’s lives forever. Firstly it brought the world closer. Earlier various nations had limited connectivity, and the sea route was the only suitable option they had for trade and travel.

But Aeroplane has helped the people to explore the sky.

But Aeroplane brought speed into their lives and brought all nations on one platform. The trade became easy. The exploration of the whole world happened at a tremendous pace. Moreover, research and development became easy with better connectivity between the echelons of the society.

Apart from this, the plight of people living in deprivation changed because they started getting  unabated support  from the rest of the world. The enhanced connectivity between nations highlighted the  pressing problems  of various parts of the world.

And explain if it is more important for older or younger

This invention is a boon for people from all walks of life. On the one hand, older people can get treatment for deadly diseases by travelling to any part of the world.

On the other hand, youngsters can enjoy their life by travelling through it to different parts of the world.

The invention I am going to talk about today is a blessing for society because it has brought a smile back to the faces of billions of people.

It is the Covid 19 vaccine.

How has it changed people’s lives?

It has changed the lives of people for good. Because due to the corona pandemic, the world is going through many problems. Firstly those who suffer from comorbid diseases are at a higher chance of mortality. By taking the vaccine, they can comfortably go out without much fear.

Secondly, students have suffered a lot by taking classes from home. Their physical and mental growth came to a halt because of not going outside. The vaccine has brought a paradigm shift in their lives by allowing them to get seamless education.

What benefits did it bring?

It brought a boatload of benefits. Firstly, it has revived the economy, which was continuously declining due to the pandemic. Millions of people are back to work, and the output is back to its previous levels.

Apart from this, it has improved people’s mental health; before its launch, a large section of society was in constant fear of getting corona positive by going out. Now, their previous life is back, and they are having a gala time with their near and dear ones.

Moreover, it has given hope to everyone that the medical fraternity is there to solve the pressing problems of society and could handle the conflicts adroitly with unabated support from the government and the general population.

And explain if it is more important for older or younger people.

It is more important for older people because they are at more risk of getting affected due to Covid 19 because of poor immunity .

In the last 100 years, numerous inventions have taken place, bringing a paradigm shift in the working of this world.

A recent invention has led to a dramatic change in people’s lives.

The invention is the Whatsapp messaging application.

It has brought a massive change in people’s lives by helping them connect freely and easily with their near and dear ones with no geographical barriers.

The erstwhile communication systems like email and voice calls are not as effective as Whatsapp. The prominent reason is that Whatsapp helps you connect from your mobile phone with tremendous ease.

Moreover, this facility is accessible because there is no charge for its usage.

In my opinion, the Whatsapp application is beneficial for people from all walks of life. As far as youngsters are concerned, they use it to share their pictures, views, assignments, study material, etc.

Moreover, they use it to do group discussions. During the Corona, Pandemic youngsters thrived primarily on Whatsapp to remain in touch with their teachers and classmates. And billions of students worldwide benefitted from it.

On the other hand, older people remain in touch with their near and dear ones through Whatsapp. There is no denying this conviction that our hearing capability declines with time, and older people thrive primarily on messaging services to connect. It helps them bridge the gap between them and their near and dear ones. Moreover, they can get unabated support quickly in case of an unforeseen contingency.

Numerous inventions have brought a paradigm shift in our lives. One recent breakthrough is worth mentioning.

What is it?

It is artificial intelligence.

It has changed our lives because there are two kinds of tasks we do not wish to perform. The first category is dangerous tasks, and we tend to stay away from them.

However, artificial intelligence coupled with robotics can perform challeging tasks with tremendous ease. The prime example is factories where engineers use them to do risky pursuits.

The second category is menial and monotonous tasks. There are various activities that are boring for us: we can assign them to artificial intelligence and focus on other significant works.

Artificial intelligence has improved the efficiency of people because it works with precision. Once the algorithm sets, it works like a charm without errors.

With the unabated support of AI, educational institutions can design pieces of training for learners according to their learning efficiency, prior education experiences, subject choices, and desired aims.

Moreover, AI can pinpoint the shortcomings of learners by researching students’ previous tests and education history and designing individual study plans. AI supports the student to educate optimally.

Here are some examples of follow up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “ Describe an invention that has changed how people live  ”.

1. How has technology made our life easier?

There is no denying this conviction that technology has brought a  paradigm shift  in our lives—the tasks which used to take hours to take minutes to perform in this contemporary epoch . Smartphones are the primary example through which we can do banking transactions from the comfort of our homes without visiting the bank.

2. Which invention do you think is the most useful at home?

I think the  food processor  is the most helpful invention for the home. For numerous people cutting vegetables is a daunting task. However, with the use of this machine, we can do many household tasks with tremendous ease.

3. Is it more difficult for older people to accept new technologies?

It is challenging for older people to accept new technologies in some cases. There are two reasons for this; firstly, using devices is an uphill task for some of them.

Secondly, they have a deep attachment to the old setup. Due to these reasons, they do not accept new technologies with ease.

4. What can be done to help older people learn to use new technologies?

Older people are a boon to society because of the heaps of experience at their disposal. Hence, all sections of society must collaborate to help the od people learn new technologies.

Firstly the corporate world should plan special training programs for the elderly under the corporate social responsibility initiative.

The family members, especially kids, must leave no stone unturned to teach the elderly about new technology usage.

5. Will our life be better if we live without technology?

For the people of the contemporary epoch, technology is an integral part of their lives. And they use it to handle their conflicts adroitly. Therefore in the absence of technology, life would become more challenging.

We will have to spend a sizeable portion of our day on trivial tasks. For example, cleaning clothes takes hours instead of minutes in the absence of a washing machine. Apart from this, the quality is also compromised.

6 . Why many inventions have taken place in the last 100 years?

Before the 20th century, a democratic setup was not there in the world, and kingdoms were prevalent. The central focus of the kings used to be on expansion, and due to that, they had a small budget for innovations and breakthroughs.

However, in the 20th century, a sizable part of the population stayed in nations with democracy. Due to that, education gained prominence, and governments started funding research and development. This paradigm shift led to inventions like the aeroplane, television, the telephone and many others.

7.How does the internet help in innovation?

There is no denying this conviction that the internet has revolutionized the process of innovating. Its massive coverage, allow people sitting in any corner of the world to fetch the required information. Due to that, the hidden talent is coming out, and numerous breakthroughs have taken place.

IELTS SPEAKING

IELTS TOPIC: An Invention That Changed The World

06/29/2022 02:55 PM

Things to consider:

  • You don't have to talk about something too difficult or complex. You can pick a household appliance - TV, kettle, microwave oven, air conditioner, etc. They are all good inventions that have changed the world for the better.
  • Most people would talk about 3 topics - the internet, a mobile phone or a computer. It is fine to talk about these, but they are repetitive and overused topics . Try to talk about something else, a more interesting or unique invention. For example, all of these ( computer, phone, internet) cannot exist without electricity.
  • When talking about inventions, try to stay in our generation . Don't go further than 100 years in the past.
  • You can talk about different people and how they use that invention in a positive way. You can consider:
  • Adults (married/single)
  • The old/Elderly

how technology has changed our lives essay ielts

Part 2: Sample Answer

There are a great number of things that have dramatically improved our lives during my lifetime . I’ve seen the beginning and rise of the internet, the introduction of the personal computer into our everyday lives , the invention and death of cassettes and CDs and so many other types of entertainment and gadgets . It is difficult to think about a single one, as all of them are great in their own way , and I couldn’t see my life without them. I guess if I had to talk about one I’d choose an essential one for our lives these days – the camera.

I begin with a few examples of inventions and then choose one.

Now, cameras have a long, long history , and have been invented way before I was born. In fact, I still remember having an actual film camera , not the ones from the 90s , but one from the 80s . It looked like a huge box , and you could place those films , one by one, shot by shot , and kind of rotate them and even project them on a wall . That’s how my parents got some photographs of their childhood and their wedding . This was the only way for them to recall their long, distant memories and show them to us, their children. Those old cameras, although clunky and difficult to operate , used to have a meaningful purpose , and people used to have an emotional attachment to their photographs . Everything used to be done with patience and care back then, and people had countless stories of inviting friends over and showing or projecting their limited amount of photos, telling stories about each shot as best as they could remember. It was a remarkable technological achievement .

Here I choose to describe a memory I have of an old camera, and not modern smartphone cameras.

Nowadays we are born with cameras in our hands . Most kids have a mobile phone or a tablet with a camera, ready to shoot thousands of photos and even videos. We are surrounded by security cameras on every corner of a building, and even in our homes. Cameras have definitely come a long way , and yet they still provide us with the same ability and convenience as the old ancient ones did – to record our most precious and memorable moments and keep them forever in our lives. Just in a much larger quantity .

I end up with coming back to the present and talking a little about how we use cameras these days.

Idioms and Phrases

Sentence starters and linking words, vocabulary related to the topic, part 3 questions.

In Part 3 we continue the topic of innovations and inventions. We will talk about machines at home as well as in the classroom and their effect on us.

how technology has changed our lives essay ielts

Examiner:   What is the most helpful innovation at home?

Kitchen appliences.

  • There are various machines we use in the kitchen and they improve our life tremendously . You could talk about some of the traditional ones like a fridge , an oven , or a stove , or you can consider some of the newer machines like an air fryer , kitchen robot , blender , juicer , or coffee maker .

Helpful Tools

  • There are some newer electronic tools that help around the home. Some people buy robot cleaners , to sweep the floor . Others have a dishwasher that helps with cleaning dishes after a meal. And then there are tools like the vacuum cleaner for floor cleaning, washing machine for washing clothes, and even electric dryers for those who live in humid areas of the world.

Examiner:   What household appliances make us lazy?

All of them.

  • All of the household appliances make us lazy. Everything that automates our personal work , is done so that we stop doing it by hand and instead we begin to rely on a machine . For instance , a dishwasher allows people to simply put all dirty dishes inside and click a button . They do not wash with their hands anymore, and perhaps save some time (arguable).
  • The reason is simple - machines are made to save us time . By that definition, if we used a machine for everything we did at home, we would have a huge amount of free time , and nowadays all of that time is usually spent for gaming , watching videos or movies,  or other sorts of entertainment . Some call that lazy,  but others see it as modern and developed . That's up to you to decide.

Examiner:   What kinds of inventions can be used at school?

In the classroom.

  • Many modern classrooms have upgraded their equipment with a big TV for teachers to play or show educational materials. Other than that there could be a computer for keeping records , or even give students tablets for use in the classroom. Education has slowly but surely moved into the digital age .
  • Other places in the school where technology could be useful are definitely in subject classrooms . For instance i n physics or technology classes , teachers could use many mechanical gadgets and tools to demonstrate a point to their students. Science classes could use tools for experiments in the same manner as well .

I believe that in the near future if we don’t run out of materials , most modern schools will provide lea rning tablets or even have mini-computers or calculators directly on the desk of every student. That would be a cool addiction . What’s more, we already have many classrooms that use a TV connected to a computer for teachers to show educational videos or some pictures, graphs , charts , and more. In some cases, there are even touch-screen TVs that could be used for some interactive teaching . And then, of course in science or physics classes , teachers could have access to various gadgets to show some scientific experiments directly in front of their students.

Examiner:   Do you think AI will replace human teachers? Why?

  • In the short term , we won't see AI replacing anything. The term AI is a very stretchy definition and we usually imagine something from the movies, like a fully independent robot teaching in a classroom, or a voice being able to read lessons or tutor students . That is still science fiction , and although we have made a lot of progress, we still need a personal touch of a teacher in the classroom.
  • In the far distant future , in 200 years, for instance , I could see AI being used fully in the classrooms, as an assistant , helping and advising students or even teachers. It is possible to see a future where AI completely replaces a human teacher, however , we don't know if students would feel comfortable communicating and learning with an inanimate thing . Perhaps if that AI was designed to be in a game, guiding and talking to the student within that educational game , then that would work out better.

With all of these questions about AI and technology, I always answer in the same way – are we talking long-term or short-term ? Obviously, we are nowhere near implementing a real AI system into any education environment . Can an AI repeat simplified sentences or simple speech – it probably can. It will take many many years for an actual AI to learn how to answer students critically , in a funny or interesting way . Teachers have to draw interest in their students , they have to use their sense of humor to engage with their listeners , and they have to provoke critical thinking . AI is far far away from doing any of these things. Perhaps one day, far into the future, we will be able to have AI enter schools and serve as an assistant , at first. And then even further into the future , an AI system would be able to handle independent teaching . However , it is not any time soon.

Modern Technology Essays

by Raluca (Calgary, Canada)

how technology has changed our lives essay ielts

Old People Modern Technology

Some old people today struggle with the use of modern technologies such as smartphones and computers. What is the cause of this? What are some possible solutions? Often, we find elderly people get frustrated with their lack of technological fluency - this stems from a multitude of reasons. This essay will focus on two main causes of this problem including the rapid development of technology and the limited access to modern technologies that elderly people might face. In addition, this essay will also provide a few examples of simple solutions that may solve these problems if implemented: these include programmes that can be hosted by school students or government subsidies. With rapid technological developments that are ever-present in virtually every society, people are in a constant attempt to keep updated with the current trends and technologies. Unfortunately, a generation has been left out of the digital revolution. This can be attributed to the difficulties they face when accessing modern technology. This does not, however, solely stem from their inability to discern between different features on modern technologies; rather, a lack of accessible information for the elderly regarding technology is the main cause of this issue. Since their access to tools that can guide them through technological processes is inhibited (they may require prior knowledge such as using softwares, for example, Google), elderly people may get discouraged and choose to renounce technology. However, this can be solved with a few simple solutions that directly target these problematic causes. Introducing a variety of programmes and volunteering schemes may tackle these issues. Through free online or in-person programmes, elderly people can be guided through the complexities of technology and can access assistance along their journey to better understand technology. For instance, high-school students can reach out to old-age homes to provide free seminars that focus on a single topic - for example, how to use Facebook to connect with friends and families across the globe. These not only help with assisting elderly people with technology, but they also bolster relationships between two generations. Alternatively, government subsidies can be implemented to help provide modern technology to those that are low on savings and lack financial stability. This will encourage more old people to pick up their smartphones and experiment! Through proper guidance and assistance, anyone can develop crucial skills in foreign areas, even if it is as intimidating as modern technology. To conclude, constant advancements in technology can leave old people behind on all the exciting new features and benefits it has to offer. This essay briefly elaborated on how limited accessibility to technology and a lack of guidance and information on the basics are responsible for this issue. Furthermore, this essay suggested possible solutions that can be implemented by various groups of society - students, governments, or educational institutes - that will minimise the impact of this issue.

Work and Study from Home Essay

Around the world, many adults are working from home, and more children are beginning to study from home because technology has become cheaper and more accessible. Do you think this is a positive or negative development? The world is getting change. It is irrefutable that technology makes a huge contribution to happen this. Working remotely or the environment of education are only a few examples of these changes. However, we try to get used to these changes these days. In my opinion, there are several drawbacks and benefits, also. First of all, in terms of education has some drawbacks. The last generation is observed as computer-tending individuals. They like a waste of their time surfing on social media, chatting, or playing a game, so computer-based education ease up distracts them. Education means not only learning some subjects but also improving your social life skills such as communication skills, team works, or do's&don't's rule. Physically education is more effective to obtain these skills. In addition to this, there is nothing to replace with a teacher for a successful education life. Teacher and class-based education should be the main task and it can be combined with online sessions additional courses or exercises. However, working from home have some benefits for employee and employer. It saves money and time, so it can be suggested for possible work-field. For example, some people commute from far away places, which means that employees have to spend extra time to arrive at their job and extra money for travel. Besides this, people consume water, electricity by working offices, this makes benefits for the employer. Furthermore, employers can hire more qualified employees around the world thanks to working at home. ın terms of the worker, they catch a chance to living wherever they want, maybe it decreases in some places' density because of the job opportunity. In conclusion, worldwide computer spreading has some advantages and disadvantages. From the point of view of adults, it is beneficial for saving money and time. While, for the youth, it would be better traditional education mixed with new technologic facilities.
