Excessive use of internet leads to internet addiction, which has numerous negative consequences. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of internet addiction on academic performance and identify the level of internet usage among tertiary students in Malaysia. Approximately 300 survey questionnaires were distributed to get 220 respondents from five different public universities in Malaysia. Based on the literature review, seven hypotheses were derived and tested using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The key findings of this study show that 6.3% male and 3.2% female students are excessive internet users. The model shows that two factors, such as psychological effects, and observable impacts have positive and significant influence on internet addiction. The result also revealed that social comforts and attitudes toward using internet do not have significant influence on internet addiction. However, social comforts and observable impacts have significantly influence on psychological effects. Although internet provides miscellaneous benefits for the users, it also causes them to encounter certain difficulties. Particularly, those young people, who leave their families to study at a university spend most of their time on the internet because of such personal and social problems as having low satisfaction from life, having social anxiety, not being able to communicate or establish relationships and feeling lonely. And this could lead to internet addiction in young people. The aim of this study is to discuss the internet addiction levels of freshmen and sophomores at university within the scope of educational theories and to predict addiction according to various variables. In today's digital age, the internet has become integral in the lives of individuals. However, while it offers numerous benefits, it is undeniable that compulsive internet utilization may have potential challenges, especially for students and their academic performance. This research identified and measured the levels of compulsive internet use and academic performance among senior high school students of Lipa City. The researchers used a quantitative descriptive correlational design to describe research variables and their relationship. A purposive sample method was used to select the 55 students from one institution in Lipa City. The Compulsive Internet Use Scale was used to measure the compulsive internet use of students while the academic performance was based on the grade point average obtained from the senior high school department. The present study found that the respondents have moderate compulsive internet use and satisfactory academic performance. A negative relationship was also found between the variables (r=-.295), indicating that higher levels of compulsive internet use among respondents corresponded to lower academic performance. Likewise, statistical analysis indicated that the relationship between the two variables was significant (p=.029). Therefore, the present study recommends that the parents, teachers, and the institution's administration should collaborate to formulate and spearhead an intervention program to reduce compulsive internet use.
