முதல் பார்வை: பேய் மாமா 

கதை: பேய் ஓட்டுகிறோம் என்று பொய் சொல்லி பங்களாவுக்குள் நுழையும் இரு குடும்பத்தினர் பேய்களிடம் சிக்கிக்கொண்டால் அதுவே பேய் மாமா. ஐடியாதான் பழசு என்று பார்த்தால் படமாக்கப்பட்ட விதமும், பேய்களின் பின்னணியும் இன்னும் பழசாக உள்ளது. எந்தப் புதுமையும் இல்லை. பேய்ப்பட வரிசையில் இதுவும் ஒரு படம், இன்னொரு படம். அவ்வளவுதான்.

யோகி பாபு: இன்னும் எத்தனை படங்களில்தான் இவரை உருவ கேலி செய்வார்கள் என்று தெரியவில்லை. அதை இவர் ஏன் தொடர்ந்து அனுமதிக்கிறார் என்றும் புரியவில்லை. வடிவேலு நடிக்க வேண்டிய படம். அவர் தப்பித்துவிட்டார். இவர் மாட்டிக்கொண்டார். கதைப்படி கிளைமேக்ஸில் நாயகனுக்கு வேலையில்லாத அரிய சினிமா. தனக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட வேலையைக் குறையில்லாமல், எல்லை மீறாமல் செய்துள்ளார். ஆனாலும், அவரின் கரியருக்கு இது போதுமானதாக இல்லை.

மாளவிகா மேனன்: 'இவன் வேற மாதிரி', 'விழா', 'பிரம்மன்' படங்களில் நடித்த இவர் இப்போது யோகி பாபுவுக்கு நாயகியாக நடித்துள்ளார். தனியாக ஸ்கோர் செய்யும் அளவுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் இல்லை. ஓரிரு காட்சிகளைத் தவிர கூட்டத்தில் ஒருவராக வந்து போகிறார்.

நகைச்சுவை நடிகர்கள்: கோவை சரளா, சிங்கம் புலி, அனுபமா குமார், மனோ பாலா, ரமேஷ் கண்ணா, வையாபுரி, லொள்ளு சபா மனோகர், கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி, நான் கடவுள் ராஜேந்திரன், இமான் அண்ணாச்சி, ரேகா, ரேஷ்மா, நமோ நாராயணா, ராகுல் தாத்தா, கணேஷ் என ஒட்டுமொத்த நகைச்சுவைப் பட்டாளமே நடித்துள்ளது. இந்தப் படத்துக்கு ஏன் இவ்வளவு பேர் என்ற கேள்வி எழுவதைத் தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை. அதிலும் சிலர் செட் பிராப்பர்ட்டி போல் இருக்கின்றனர். சிலர் திடீர் திடீரென்று காணாமல் போகின்றனர். பளிச்சென்று காமெடி செய்து யாரும் ஈர்க்கவில்லை. நகைச்சுவைக்கு வந்த சோதனை ரொம்பவே பெரிது.

ஸ்பூஃப்: புன்னகை மன்னன், பாகுபலி, பேட்ட, பிகில், பம்பாய், தலைநகரம், கோலமாவு கோகிலா, சந்திரமுகி, பிக் பாஸ், லலிதா ஜூவல்லரி, சரவணா ஸ்டோர்ஸ், சரவண பவன், புளூ சட்டை மாறன், ரஜினி அரசியல், தல- தளபதி என்று இஷ்டத்துக்கும் கலந்துகட்டி அடித்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஸ்பூஃப் படமாக இருந்திருந்தால் கூட மனசைத் தேற்றியிருக்கலாம். ஆனால், இவை அங்கொன்றும் இங்கொன்றுமாக இடைச்செருகலாக இருப்பதால் ரசிக்க முடியவில்லை.

ஒப்புதல் வாக்குமூலம்: நான் காமெடியன், ஹீரோ இல்லை. விஜய், அஜித் கூட நடிப்பது மிஸ் ஆகக்கூடாது என்று மைண்ட் வாய்ஸையே வசனமாகப் பேசி ஒப்புதல் வாக்குமூலம் கொடுத்துள்ளார் யோகி பாபு. இனியாவது அவர் படங்களின் தேர்வில் கவனம் செலுத்த வேண்டும்.

குறியீடு: நான் கடவுள் ராஜேந்திரன் - ரேகா ஜோடி அவ்வப்போது ஃபன் ஃபன் ஃபன் என்று சொல்லிச் சிரிக்கிறார்கள். நமக்குத்தான் சிரிப்பா? கிலோ என்ன விலை என்ற கேள்வி எழுகிறது. இல்லாத காமெடியைக் குறியீடாக உணர்த்தவும், இட்டு நிரப்பிக் கொள்ளவும் இந்த ஃபன் ஃபன் ஃபன் வசனம் சொல்லி, காமெடி வறட்சி இருப்பதைக் கண்ணாடி போல் பிரதிபலிக்கிறார்கள்.

டெட் மார்னிங்: பேய்கள் சொல்லும் டெட் மார்னிங்கும் ஏதோ ஒரு வகையில் ரசிகர்களுக்கான எச்சரிக்கை மணியாகவே இருந்துவிடுகிறது. இயக்குநருக்குள் இருக்கும் நல்ல மனசுதான் இப்படி அவரையும் அறியாமல் அலர்ட் செய்கிறது போல. இதனை டீஸர், ட்ரெய்லரில் போட்டிருந்தாலாவது தப்பித்திருக்கலாம். விதி வலியது.

கண்டனம்: காட்டெருமை, பன்னிமூஞ்சி வாயன், பன்னிக்குட்டி என்று யோகி பாவுவைச் சுற்றியே உருவ கேலி தொடர்கிறது. அவரின் முடி குறித்த கிண்டலும் நீள்கிறது. பேய்க்காவது உன்னைப் பிடிச்சிருக்கே என்று யோகி பாபுவின் தாய் வசனம் பேசி காமெடி என்கிற பெயரில் காயப்படுத்துகிறார். இதையெல்லாம் அனுமதித்தால் ஆத்திரம் வருது மக்களே!

தொழில்நுட்பம்: எம்வி பன்னீர்செல்வம் ஒளிப்பதிவு பரவாயில்லை ரகம். ராஜ் ஆர்யன் இசை பேய்ப் படத்துக்கான த்ரில் கூட்டவில்லை. அந்த பட்டுமலை பங்களாவின் ஊஞ்சல் ஷாட்டை மட்டும் எடிட்டர் ப்ரீத்தம் அவ்வப்போது காட்டி அலுப்பூட்டுகிறார். கட்ஸில் நிறைய கலவரமூட்டி சோதிக்கிறார்.

இயக்குநர்: ஷக்தி சிதம்பரம் முதல் பாதி வரைக்கும் இஷ்டத்துக்கும் எடுத்து எடிட்டரை விளையாடவிட்டுள்ளார். அவரும் கதையே இல்லாத படத்தை வைத்துக்கொண்டு காட்டு காட்டு என்று காட்ட முடியாமல் கஷ்டப்பட்டிருக்கிறார். கதாபாத்திரங்கள் ஓடிக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறார்கள். கதைதான் நகராமல் நடுவீட்டில் நாற்காலி போட்டு கம்மென்று அமர்ந்துவிட்டது. கதையின் அவுட்லைனுக்கும் ஷக்தி சிதம்பரம் கவலைப்படவில்லை. அரண்மனை, காஞ்சனா பாணி கதையை மிக்ஸியில் அடித்து அரைத்துக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். நகைச்சுவையில் கரை கண்ட இயக்குநர் இப்படி ஏமாற்றுவார் என்று கொஞ்சம் கூட எதிர்பார்க்கவில்லை. நல்ல நல்ல காமெடிப் படங்களைக் கொடுத்த மனிதர் இப்படி ஆகிட்டாரே என்று வருத்தப்பட வைத்துவிட்டார்.

ஏமாற்றம்: பட்டுமலை சித்தர் என்ற பில்டப்பில் பெரிய பின்னணி இருப்பதாக நினைத்தால் அதிலும் ஏமாற்றத்தை அள்ளித் தெளித்துள்ளார் இயக்குநர் ஷக்தி சிதம்பரம். எமோஷன் எடுபடவில்லை.

சின்ன ஆறுதல்: இவ்வளவு ஏமாற்றங்களுக்கு மத்தியில் எம்.எஸ்.பாஸ்கர் நடிப்பும், குரலும் மட்டும் சின்ன ஆறுதல்.

ரசிகர்கள்: கரோனா காலத்தில் கவலை மறந்து சிரிக்கலாம், ரசிக்கலாம் என்று நினைத்து வந்த இவர்கள்தான் ரொம்ப பாவம். 'பூட்' படத்தின் இந்தி போஸ்டரையே காப்பி அடித்து பேய் மாமா போஸ்டர் உருவானதாக நெட்டிசன்கள் சமீபத்தில் கலாய்த்துத் தள்ளினர். அப்போதே சுதாரித்திருந்தால் சேதாரம் இல்லாமல் தப்பியிருக்கலாம்.

அன்பு வாசகர்களே....

இந்த ஊரடங்கு காலத்தில் வீட்டை விட்டு வெளியே வராமல் நமக்கு நாமே சமூக விலகல் ( Social Distancing) செய்து கொள்வோம். செய்தி ஊடகங்களின் வழியே உலகுடன் தொடர்பில் இருப்போம். பொதுவெளியில் இருந்து தனிமைப்படுத்திக் கொண்டு கரோனா பரவலைத் தடுப்பதில் நம் பங்கை முழுமையாக இந்த சமூகத்துக்கு அளிப்போம்.

Pei Mama Movie Review

Pei Mama is the third horror flick of this month and is the second flick in the horror comedy genre. Earlier this month it was Vijay Sethupathi’s Annabelle Sethupathi followed by Raai Laxmi’s Cinderella. In a way, Pei Mama and Annabelle Sethupathi, more or less has a similar plotline if we neglect the fantasy elements in the latter. A family that is struck inside a haunted house has to deal with the ghosts in it. Actor Yogi Babu seems to be in almost every film that hits the screens at the moment. But of late there is a growing talk that his comedies are not funny anymore. Is Pei Mama comical enough to put an end to those talks? To know that let us get in to the movie review.

Pei Mama follows the life of Kozhi Kumar (Yogi Babu). Pattumalai bungalow, a bungalow in a deserted place is believed to be haunted. Veeramani (Abhishek Vinod) mistakes Kozhi Kumar and his family as ghostbusters and hires them to deal with the ghosts. Kozhi Kumar and his family arrive at the Pattumalai bungalow and settle in. The ghosts in the bungalow try to scare them off. Here is the place for a touching scene to get in the good books of the ghosts. After that the ghosts begin to move in a friendly manner with Kozhi Kumar and his family. They even share how they lost their lives and ended up as ghosts in the Pattumalai bungalow. They seek the help of Kozhi Kumar and his family to avenge their death. Sympathized by their tragic story they agree to help. Their target is Veeramani and a wealthy doctor couple who are devising a devious plan to spread a virus to profit out of it (staying contemporary it seems). Why do the ghosts want to kill these people, are these people involved in the death of them, and do the ghosts manage to extract their revenge on them, is what makes the rest of the flick.

There is a comedy sequence in Annabelle Sethupathi involving Yogi Babu and Taapsee Pannu . Where Taapsee Pannu says, “pudhusu pudhusu uh katha sollatha” to which Yogi Babu replies, “pudhusa yavanma katha solluran, palaya kadhaiya than apadiyae oolta panni pannuranuga. Ena pannurathu?” Even they seem to know that this kind of film making is getting a little out of hand. Seriously, how many films we would have had on the same plotline over the years in Tamil cinema? And how many more are still in the making? Have the story tellers of Tamil cinema lost stream or what? Perhaps, it is the budget favorableness in cooking this type of flick. All one needs is a cast, and a bungalow to wrap up the shoot in under 30 days.

Director Sakthi Chidambaram is a kind of story teller who does not concern himself with the need for a story to make flicks or the logicalities while writing a script. His films have never had a griping story and they just rely on the way he writes his comedies. Maha Nadigan, Englishkaran, Kovai Brothers are example of it. Then there is another facet to director Sakthi Chidambaram which produced utter flops like Viyabari, Rajadhi Raja, and Guru Sishyan. In Pei Mama it is the film maker’s latter facet. Nothing has gone up north for Pei Mama. Right from the opening the movie tries to sell utter rubbish in the pretext of comedy. The sad thing is, it does not even allow a breather time. While watching Pei Mama one could not help but wonder have the director has lost even the bits and pieces of film making traits that was in him.

Pei Mama appears to have been made similarly to how ‘shorts’ video is made on YouTube. Picking random contents that are not your original ideas from here and there and turning them in to a video. It looks like director Sakthi Chidambaram penned down whatever he thought was funny and then put them together to make a run time of two hours or so. Does not Sakthi Chidambaram have assistants? Would not they tell him if the comedies are not funny? Or do they actually think what has been written is funny?

Actor Yogi Babu’s one-liners are getting tedious film after film. The sooner the comedian does something about it, the better it is for the star. Actress Malavika Menon does not have much room to perform. It is disheartening to see actress Kovai Sarala in such a worthless role. Comedians M. S. Bhaskar, Motta Rajendran, and Imman Annachi are all wasted because of poorly written comedy portions. The rest of the cast has delivered a middling performance as well.

On the technical front, it is a totally failure on all departments for Pei Mama. Music director Raj Aryan’s tracks and background scores are in bad taste. They do not even hold our attention for too long. Cinematographer M. V. Paneer Selvam’s frames are middling. Editor Preetham’s scissor works only highlight the poor work done by his colleague.

On the whole, sitting at home and watching YouTube videos for a couple of hours can add more value to our time than dressing up and making it to the theaters to watch Pei Mama.

Pei Mama movie review

Yogi Babu and his family are mistook as ghost busters and are hired by a group of people to chases aways ghosts from a bungalow.

The family enters the bungalow and are initially scared by the ghosts.

Later they get to know about their flashback and decide to help them to avenge those responsible for their death.

Yogi Babu shines in the character and plays his part well. The body shaming dialogues could have been avoided.

Rest of the cast including Mottai Rajendran and Rekha could have been utilised better.

Director Shakthi Chidambaram who is known for his comedy movies has tried his luck in the horror-comedy genre.

The screenplay and writing could have been a little better.

Rest of the technical aspects of the movie are good.

Veeramani hired Kozhi Kumar's family to get rid of the ghosts living in Pattumalai Bungalow, thinking they were Ghostbusters. But they are not. The entire family landed in the bungalow, and the spirits residing in the bungalow moved with them friendly and tried to kill Veeramani, Dr. MSR, and Dr. Nirmala. MSR and Nirmala are said to have spread a virus and destroy society, and hence the ghosts wanted to kill them using the Kozhi Kumar family. What happened to Kozhi Kumar and his family? Were they able to get out of the bungalow? The rest of the story deals with it.

Star Performance

Yogi Babu played his role perfectly. His comedy oneliners and self-mocking are present as usual. The rest of the stars had done what was required.

The story didn't have anything new, except for the concept that they are treated as Ghostbusters and let to enter the haunted bungalow. Although the film is seen as a spoof movie, there are many loopholes in it. The scenes between Rajendran and Rekha didn't bring anything laudable or laughable. In fact, it irritates, as they spoofed the classic scene from a hit film. The second half is unimpressive. Shakthi Chidambaram should have concentrated on the second half.

With a good set of actors, the director should have gone for a better script. Although the film seems to be a spoof of horror-comedy cinema, it didn't make any impact. However, with the performance of Yogi Babu, Pei Mama is watchable once!
