500 Words Essay On A Cricket Match

Cricket is the second-most popular sport in the world. There are 2.5 billion cricket fans worldwide, spread across 180 nations. The ICC Cricket World Cup is the most viewed cricket event. The governing body in charge of planning world cup competitions for international cricket is the International Cricket Council (ICC).

History Of Cricket

Cricket originated in England as a sport for royals in the 16th century; later, during the colonial period, it was adapted by the rajas and nawabs of India as they came into contact with the British. Eventually, the royals of India started organising matches for their own entertainment in which common people were allowed to participate, which started the enthusiasm for this sport in the country.

How It Is Played

In cricket, two teams of 11 players face off against each other, one batting and one bowling and fielding. The batting and bowling teams are chosen through a coin toss. The field is circular to oval, with the main batting and bowling taking place in the middle of the field, involving two batsmen from one team and a bowler and wicket-keeper from the opposing team, while the remaining nine players hold the ground to prevent the batsmen from scoring. There are two umpires on the ground who judge the decisions.

Cricket In India

In India, cricket is more of a festival than a sport; some even call it a religion. From young to old, men and women, everybody is a fan of cricket in our country. The players that represent our country at the international level and our states and schools at the national and regional level are paid so much respect by everybody. The fanaticism of cricket is so deep that if you ask a child what he wants to be when he grows up, the obvious answer will be that he wants to play cricket.

My Experience Of A Cricket Match

Recently, an inter-school tournament was held, and we got the chance to see our team play. The stadium was packed with both our team's and the opposing team's supporters. Everybody was cheering for their teams.

The Game | The game began with a coin toss to determine which team would bat first. Our team won the toss and chose to bat first, and the opponent team bowled first. Both teams were on the ground as the game began, and on the very first ball, our team captain, who was the opening player, hit a six, and the ball flew out of the boundary. This continued throughout the game; whenever a batsman hit a six or four, the entire stadium and cricket ground erupted in raucous cheers from the crowd.

The Excitement | The match was exciting because it had ups and downs; players got clean hits; there were catches; sneak runs; boundaries; everything enthralled the audience. Even the bowling part of our team was much more exciting than the batting part. Our team scored 150 runs and was successful in stopping the opposing team at 120 runs, so we won. The players were appreciated a lot, and everybody talked about the game for more than a week. The team members later got awarded by our principal and the chief guest.

Cricket is a popular sport played throughout the globe. It was invented in the late 16 th century in England and since then has gained popularity with today over 2 billion fans spread across the globe. The game is played with very few types of equipment over a rectangular piece of land.

How is Cricket Played

The game of cricket is played with a ball and a bat. It is played between two teams having 11 players each. The teams take their turn to subsequently bat and ball. The team that chose to bat sends its two players (batsmen) to the field while the remaining waits for their turn, outside the field. When the first inning gets over, the bowling team takes to batting and the batting team takes to field.

The rules of the game of cricket are specified in a code called the Laws of Cricket. There are 42 laws known to be drafted as early as 1744 and is presently maintained by the Marylebone Cricket Club in London. In the center of the field, there should be a rectangular pitch measuring 22 yards from wicket to wicket. Every over in cricket has six ball deliveries. After every over, the bowlers are rotated. Batsmen score runs until they are bowled and send off the field.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – History of Cricket and Cricket Team

The game of cricket has become increasingly popular since its evolution centuries ago. The game is supposed to be originated in England during the 16th century and has since then spread to other parts of the world making it the second most popular sport after football.

History of Cricket

The earliest documented reference to the cricket was made during a legal case trial at Guildford, Surrey, England on 27 th January 1598.

Contesting over a piece of land, John Derrick, who was a coroner by profession, testified that he used to play cricket on that piece of land with his mates, almost 50 years back. Obviously, he didn’t invent the game and it was probably being played before that time.

Amid all the uncertainty regarding the origin of cricket, one thing is certain that it was originated before 1550, probably played by the children in south-east England.

Initially, during the late 16th-century cricket was played by the children over a piece of land cleared by cattle grazing. In the coming century, it became popular and was now also played by adults.

The earliest known proper match was held at Circa, England in 1611. Evidence is also found to substantiate that in the next 11 years at least 30 matches were played between recognized teams.

With the invention of the newspaper industry, cricket gained more popularity during the 18 th century. Gradually, the players started getting popular and became huge crowd pullers. Today, the popularity of cricket has reached its pinnacle with over 2.5 billion fans throughout the world.

Teams around the World

As of August 2022, there are 108 ICC members including 12 full members and 96 associate members.

All full member nations are qualified to play ODIs (One Day International) and the Twenty20. The 12 full member countries, in the increasing order of their year of membership, are – South Africa (1909), England (1909), Australia (1909), West Indies (1926), New Zealand (1926), India (1926), Pakistan (1952), Sri Lanka (1981), Zimbabwe (1992), Bangladesh (2000), Afghanistan (2017) and Ireland (2017).

Associate members, a group of 96 countries are eligible to play ICC World Cricket League. However, there are certain prerequisites for a country to qualify as an associate member. Firstly it must have at least 16 senior and 16 junior teams and secondly, it must have an access to at least 8 cricket grounds with 4 of them as permanent pitch.

Beginning as a ball and stick game played by the village children in England, some five centuries ago; cricket has progressed immensely in popularity. Though the rules and techniques of the game have evolved over years, the basic form of the game has stood the test of time and remains mostly unaltered.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – Cricket: A Globally Popular Sport

Cricket is a popular sport, and probably we all are very well familiar with its rules and regulations. Today, it has become so popular that it has grown to become a multi-billion dollar sport. The popularity of cricket is growing day by day and so is the revenue that it generates.

Various Formats of Cricket

Cricket is played mainly in three formats, namely test match, one day, and Twenty20. A brief description of these formats is provided below for you.

  • Test Match Format

Test Match is probably the original form of the game, being played since 1877. It is played over a span of five days and has two innings. Each team gets a chance to bat and ball twice. A test match brings out the real talents of a team and its cricketers, as being played over longer periods; it tests their endurance, resilience, patience and sportsman spirit.

  • One Day Format

The one day format of cricket is a one inning match with each team getting a single chance to bat and ball. One single inning lasts for 50 overs, with each over having six balls. The first One Day International (ODI) match was played on 5 th January 1971 between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The most popular cricketing event ICC (International Cricket Council) World Cup is conducted every four years in a day format.

  • Twenty20 Format

A cricket match in the Twenty20 format is played for 20 overs for each team. A match in twenty20 format usually takes three hours to conclude. The first cricket match in twenty20 format was played on 5 th August 2004 between the women’s team of England and New Zealand. The first men’s international twenty20 match was played on 17 th February 2005 between Australia and New Zealand. An ICC World Cup Twenty20 is held every four years.

Cricket – A Globally Popular Sport

Cricket is by far the second most popular sport around the world after football. The 2.5 billion fans of the cricket living in 180 countries, keep the passion kicking. ICC Cricket World Cup is the most popular cricketing event. Several private business houses also give a day’s leave to their employees to enjoy the finals of World Cup.

Speaking of cricket popularity and it would be inappropriate if I didn’t mention India. Cricket is so much popular in India that it has become a household name in the whole of the country. Cricketers in India are revered as legends and children idealize them. Cricket is played in every street and field of India, during the evening and weekends. Be you in any state of India, the chances of your coming across an ongoing cricket match in some street or ground are pretty much fair.

Cricket – A Rich Sport

As big is the popularity of cricket, so is the money involved. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the governing body that conducts international matches such as the Cricket World Cup.
