Essay on Mobile Phones: 400 Words

When telephone was first introduced in the world in the 1950s, people were keenly interested in it. As an easier way of communication, telephone has its own merit. Of late, the introduction of mobiles makes an easy access to communication. It is in fact inevitable in the present day of hurry and business. People have warmly accepted mobiles as the blessing of science. There is little doubt that without the use of mobiles none is nowadays able to lead one’s life quite normally. One is capable of communicating with people, staying far away very quickly. Thus many a problem can be well- solved by way of using these mobiles.

But everything has its merit and demerit. As science is a bane as well as a boon, mobiles are to some extent to be cursed. People, especially the young generation, have been abusing mobiles. They not only chat in an unexpected way but also indulge themselves in leading immoral life by abusing mobiles. Apart from this, several mercenary companies exploit the advantage of mobiles to meet their selfish ends. They do business through mobiles. As a result, young people have been misguided. To use mobiles is for them to be up to date. They avail themselves of the opportunity of the internet connection in their mobiles and do whatever they like to do. Obscene video clippings and some other versions of immoral entertainment are now available in mobiles. Therefore, the students have now tremendous fascination for the mobiles. Consequently, instead of studying, concentrate on using mobiles for sheer fun.

Another demerit is that because of the excessive use of the mobiles different companies plunge themselves into doing profitable business. Consequently, numerous towers have been erected for the network of mobiles. It is well known that a particular wave which is responsible for the mobile network does harm to the ecological balance of the environment. It is evident in the pale colors of the trees and fruits adjacent to the mobile towers.

Thus, it is the time to be conscious of the abuse of the mobiles. The concerned authority should take immediate steps to stop immoral business which is proliferating in abusing mobiles. All should remember that the sole purpose of mobile is to communicate. Entertainment may be available in the network of mobiles. But there should be no immoral design. Above all, the government should restrict the use of mobiles, so much so that anti-social activities may not be done through mobiles.

History and development.

The development of mobile telephony can be traced back to early radio engineering, with the Finnish inventor Areic Tigerstedt filing a patent application in 1917 for "the pocket-size folding telephone with an extremely thin carbon microphone." The first predecessors of cellular phones were analogue radio broadcasts from trains and ships. Following the Second World War, competition between several countries to create portable telephone equipment began.

Beginning with early zeroth-generation (0G) systems like Bell System's Mobile Telephone Service and its replacement, the Improved Mobile Telephone Service, the advancements in mobile telephony may be followed in consecutive "generations." These 0G systems were extremely costly, non-cellular, and unable to handle several simultaneous calls.

The introduction of smartphones in the early 2000s marked a significant advancement in mobile technology. These devices have enabled us to access the internet, use various apps, and perform a wide range of tasks from one compact device. The development of mobile networks from 2G to 5G has also greatly improved the speed and reliability of mobile communications.

One of the main reasons why mobile phones are considered a necessary evil is because they have become essential for communication in today's fast-paced society. They allow us to stay connected with loved ones, colleagues, and the world around us, which is critical for personal and professional relationships. However, this constant connectivity can also lead to a lack of face-to-face communication, which can negatively impact our social interactions and relationships.

Additionally, mobile phones can also have negative effects on our mental and physical health. The constant use of mobile phones can lead to eye strain, headaches, and poor posture, and the blue light emitted by screens can disrupt sleep patterns. Furthermore, the constant distractions and notifications from mobile phones can lead to a decreased ability to focus and increased stress levels.

Moreover, mobile phones have been blamed for the reduction in privacy and security, with many people concerned about the amount of personal data that is collected and stored by mobile phone companies, apps and other third-parties.

In conclusion, the mobile phone has come a long way from its early days as a tool for making and receiving calls. It has transformed into a powerful device that has made our lives more convenient, efficient, and connected. The mobile phone continues to evolve and improve, making it an essential part of our modern world. The history, development, and impact of mobile phones on our daily lives are significant, and it is clear that it has been and will continue to be a vital technology in our society.

The Use of Mobile Phones in the Classroom Can Help Students Learn Better Essay

Introduction.

It is undeniable that today’s world revolves around technology due to its growth over the past decades. Mobile phones as a part of technology have become increasingly common in modern society. Today, it is impossible to imagine an adolescent or an adult without a cell phone. Students have started to use mobile phones in classrooms, which has raised many concerns among teachers, schools’ authorities, and parents. While there are several disadvantages of the utilization of technology during classes, the advantages of it prevail.

The benefits of technology for students are evident. First, mobile phones can substitute textbooks and notebooks, which may have a positive impact on individuals’ health as they do not have to carry heavy bags to schools. Students can download learning materials in electronic form and use them during classes. Moreover, they can find the information faster and save time to perform other important tasks. Second, with the help of mobile phones, students can have access to their textbooks, lectures, and notes anywhere and at any time. They can read on the bus on their way to school, which may increase the time they dedicate to the analysis of the learning materials and help them to reflect on the topics of discussions.

Furthermore, students can use mobile phones as dictionaries in language classes. It may save their time and ensure that the long learning process does not discourage them. Also, they can download applications that are designed to assist in acquiring new language skills.

It is necessary to mention that students can use mobile phones as organizational or planning tools. They can plan their time based on the deadlines, arrange their activities and track their grades and performance in class. While many students use notebooks for such purposes, the utilization of mobile phones allows for having all the information in one place and ensuring that no important data is lost. Moreover, teachers can be involved in the organizational process too by sharing the necessary information about due dates and requirements via applications. It may improve teacher-student relationships and increase individuals’ performance in class.

There are several drawbacks associated with the use of mobile phones in the classroom. The primary one is that they can distract students from learning, as they may prefer to play games or use social networks. Moreover, individuals can become aggressive if the teachers or school authorities try to forbid the use of technology in class. To eliminate the possible negative outcomes, it is necessary for students to learn how to avoid distraction while working with mobile phones.

For example, they can delete unnecessary applications or restrict their use during classes. Apart from that, students can improve their performance by studying the factors that can cause distraction and avoiding them. Teachers and schools’ authorities should also consider investigating the benefits of the technology to prevent the establishment of unnecessary policies related to its use in the classroom.

The use of mobile phones in the classroom can improve student’s performance and help them to have better learning outcomes. It can save their time, prevent them from carrying heavy bags with textbooks and notebooks and increase the accessibility of course materials. The possible drawbacks of the use of technology in class are individuals’ distraction and aggression. However, students can eliminate the disadvantages of the utilization of mobile phones by avoiding the factors that can cause negative learning outcomes.

What Students Are Saying About How Much They Use Their Phones, and Whether We Should Be Worried

New research challenges assumptions about the negative effects of social media and smartphones on children. We asked teenagers whether their parents should worry about how much time they spend on their devices.

By The Learning Network

Please note: This post is part of The Learning Network’s ongoing Current Events Conversation feature. We invite students to react to the news via our daily writing prompts and, each week, we publish a selection of their comments.

We frequently ask students about their relationship with screens, but a question we posed this week seems to have struck a chord with the teenagers who comment on our writing prompts.

Inspired by the article “ Panicking About Your Kids’ Phones? New Research Says Don’t ,” we asked students: Should the adults in your life be worried by how much you use your phone?

We heard from over 300 teenagers who gave a flurry of nuanced, thoughtful and enlightening responses. In fact, their comments were so good that we decided to feature only this prompt in this week’s Current Events Conversation, instead of the usual three , so we can highlight as many responses as possible.

Some students admitted to spending upward of eight hours a day online, with the majority averaging around two to four hours. Some said their devices were a reasonable escape from the pressures of teenage life, while others explained they were essential for school. And still others raised an insightful question: Why is their “phone addiction” perceived as more harmful than that of the adults in their lives?

As you’ll see below, one thing was crystal clear in their reflections: These teenagers spend a lot of time thinking about their phone usage. And they have a critical lens not only on how much they use their phones, but also on how it affects their education, emotional life and relationships.

Read on for a fuller scope of the comments, but before you do, we want to offer a warm welcome to new classes from Ames High School, Iowa ; Carney ; Florida ; Fort Mill High School ; Georgia ; Hightstown High School, N.J. ; Nelson County High School ; New Berlin, Wis. ; New York ; and Pennsylvania .

Please note: Student comments have been lightly edited for length, but otherwise appear exactly as they were originally submitted.

I know I’m on my phone too much.

I think that I spend a little too much time on my phone per day. And by a little, I mean a lot. I’m not sure my average but I know I could be going to bed a lot earlier and get my work done quicker if I just put it down. I do many things on my phone like text people, snapchat, play games, and so on.

I think it does have a positive benefit on my well being because without it, I would not have friendships and relationships I have today. The negative effects it has on me is time usage and keeping me from doing work and going to bed on time. I am worried about being on my phone too much but I don’t think it interferes with me being social, especially in this day and age.

My average screen time is probably about 12 hours a day. I worry a lot about how much time I spend on my phone. But the way I socialize is through my phone. I use social media to communicate, and I have to use my phone to make calls and text. But whenever I have to study, I pull out my phone and go on it for about an hour …

When it is time to go to sleep, I go on my phone in the dark with dark mode on. My bed has my charger connected to it so I can easily stay up all night. I want to remove it but because I am so addicted to my phone, I do not. One time I fell asleep at 2 am because I was on my phone, and it made me extremely tired (this was on a school night).

— Jessica Chen, J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia, PA

Since I got an iPhone, I have spent more time on my phone because of social media apps. I caught myself on multiple occasions telling myself “only 15 more minutes and then I’ll start my homework,” but then I end up spending 30 minutes on my phone. When I have tried to use my phone less I end up watching tv, so I just go from one type of a screen to the next.

— Allison Ciero, Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL

I spend too much time on my phone. I sometimes think about how much I am on my phone and I’m disgusted with how much time I feel like I’m wasting. But the truth is, I do a lot more than scroll through social media or watch stupid videos on my phone. My phone is a portable library that carries all of my favorite books on it. And those stupid videos and posts sometimes completely change my day for the better.

— Mason Evans, Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC

On average, I spend about 6 hours a day on my phone. It is spent with me going on social media, playing games, or watching Netflix. Every weekend, a notification pops up showing me how much time I have spent and each week it has gone up. I am starting to become a lot more cautious about how much time I spend on my phone because it is starting to worry me. My phone has become something that I always have to have and it never leaves my side. It has gotten in the way of me studying and spending time with my family which has started to worry me. I believe that parents should know how much time their kid is using their phone but I don’t think that they should act upon it.

— Mark, Hightstown

Teenagers should monitor their own phone use.

I understand a little micromanaging when it comes to technology time. However, by the time we reach high school, we should all be responsible for ourselves in that realm, to turn in homework, to know our time limits. It is time for the parents to release their grasp unless it is absolutely necessary.

It is our job as teenagers to learn what happens when we stay on our phones too long and we don’t get enough sleep or don’t finish a homework assignment, we won’t understand the consequences if we don’t learn for ourselves.

— Josh Reifel, Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL

While I stand by this statement, I would also like to point out that our parents didn’t grow up with this stuff, and they may not know how to handle our usage in the best way. Often times I find my parents using the phone — that they bought for us — as punishment. They threaten to take it away or to throw it out, this only makes out subconscious want it more. Moreover, they make us feel guilty for being born in a world where we do have access to these devices — as if we could help it. They say “when I was a kid we didn’t have to talk to our friends all the time, we would wait to see them the next day at school.” They try us guilt you into not using which once again, will only make us want it more to spite them.

— kenna royce, Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, Il

While some parents see it beneficial to limit teens usage on phones, others don’t take any action. For example, my parents have always trusted me to be responsible in my time management, and balancing school, Church, and friends. However, I do understand that my parents pay for my phone, and data usage, and I would willingly comply if they had any restrictions or rules. Phones, however, often rely as a crutch for parents, meaning they often incorrectly blame their child’s issue, or challenges for how much time they spend on their phone.

— Anna Atwood, Bryant High School Arkansas

In observing my friends and classmates, I think that most of us have a handle on what an appropriate amount of screen time is. Social media can be a breeding ground for bullying, which can then lead to depression and anxiety, but I’m not entirely sure that would correlate with simply spending more time on devices. Hopefully, if parents instill the value of limitations while kids are young, they will be able to control themselves appropriately in the future.

— Sarah Song, Ames High School

I feel like I’m extremely in touch with my personal media usage, but it isn’t easy. Apps are designed to keep you on them as long as possible, and sometimes it’s horribly hard to put down a phone after seeing a Snapchat from your friend pop up. After checking just now, I spent an average of 1 hour 58 minutes on my phone last month. Just shy of 2 hours, which is the recommendation maximum time adolescents should spend on non-education related screens. Many of my peers use them 6+ hours daily.

I notice an exact correlation between the amount of time I’m on my phone and how productive I am that given day. If I get out of bed and don’t immediately pick up my phone, I feel like I can get ready faster, and feel more energized and motivated.

Sometimes, if I have a lot of homework one night, I plug my phone in in a separate room, so I won’t think about it. It’s just so easy to forget about the essay you need to write if you unlock your phone and start messing around. They’re excellent distractions.

I couldn’t agree more with the statement that “phones increase anxiety, depression and sleep deprivation among teenagers.” I’ve seen it happen in myself and my peers. In the 3 years I’ve had a phone, there have been too many nights I regret sacrificing sleep for texting to a friend online or getting lost on YouTube. It’s becoming more important to be aware of how our phones affect our lives as they take over more and more aspects of our days.

— Mollie Brinker, Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC

Who is supervising how much adults use their phones?

I think that in some ways it could be good for adults to monitor how much children are on their phones today. However, who is going to monitor the adults? What I have noticed while growing up in this world of technology, is that so many adults around me are on their phone just as often as the children. I think it can be difficult to stay away from our phones when everyone around you is on their phones. I think we have to accept technology’s role and try to be as responsible with it as we can.

— Kaylee Phillips, Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL

Some evenings at my house consists of our family in the same room, each of us on our same devices. Adults should worry about cell phone usage, in both their life and their children’s lives.

A part of the issue is that parents can use their devices just as much as the kids. Adults must realize that they too must change. If they take their kid’s phone away, they should put theirs away too. They should push their child to have real-life experiences, where words can’t be misinterpreted.

— Evan Lippolis, Ames High School

Screens are affecting our mental and physical health.

I feel like phones have a negative effect on the mental stability of most teenagers today. There are so many things we worry about now … “How many snaps have I got this hour?”, “Has he seen my story yet?”, “I wonder if he’s just ignoring me?”

Our phones present us with an ultimatum, Go out and be social, or stay in and get on facetime. It’s not the same, there are certain endorphins your mind releases when you are physically in contact with another person. Human interaction is healthy.

My phone brings me mixed emotions, and I kind of rely on my phone for almost everything. Before I had a phone my life was so easy and I was a social butterfly, now I’m a 17 year old girl who comes home from work and watches a movie on my phone until my eyes physically will not open.

— Brooklyn Harcrow, Lubbock, TX

I usually spend about 3 hours a week on my phone. I grew up in Haiti, so most of the time I am in contact with my friends back home. When we lived in Haiti, FaceTime was a way that I could not only talk to my sister, who was at Iowa State, but we could also see her.

My phone has had negative impacts on my health. I have had chronic migraines that have been affected by my posture, which is aggravated by being hunched over my phone all day. I also find myself in more pain after even a short time on my phone. Social media has also left me feeling left out and more discouraged about my own life. As someone who is in a new atmosphere and environment, when I see on social media my friends’ activities I feel more isolated and alone.

— Kerlande Mompremier, Ames High School

I most definitely see the connection between higher levels of stress and being on your phone for a more than needed amount of time. Scrolling through social media and looking at small square sized snapshots of a person’s “picture perfect life” can really have an effect on both self-esteem and mental health. The world and especially the younger generations must learn to spark creativity and imagination. Those things can only be formed through one’s mind, experiences, and thoughts, not any phone or device on the planet can provide them.

— Sadie Dunne, Hoggard High school in Wilmington, NC

For me personally, I tend to find myself veering away from my phone during stressful times because I feel like all it does is add to it. I have anxiety and have seen that the negative effects from social media only add to that anxiousness. I agree that phone usage and constant usage of social media can definitely increase anxiety and depression, if you allow yourself to get involved so much you can’t return to a normal lifestyle without it. I think that as I feel like I’m starting to feel more anxious and stressed, my phone does not help the situation but makes it worse, so I try to stay away from it during these times.

— Taylor Tomlinson, Lubbock, TX

Social media has made me feel more connected to others, not less.

Speaking personally, I can recall many times in which social media has helped me feel less lonely than I otherwise would have been. I have severe anxiety, so the idea of socializing with people in a less formal setting, such as in a lunchroom, or outside of class is terrifying to me. So, as a result, I am often alone during these periods. I’ll go off and find my own corner, and I sit and have to watch as those around me have fun with their friends and socialize.

I have gone through this process near-daily for ten years, and I am confident that without social media to fall back on, I would have been driven mad. Social media makes me feel as though there are people out there I can talk to, and that I can control the conversation however I like. I can have friends that I respond to at my own pace, leaving me room to better formulate my responses.

— Jackson Bumgarner, Bryant High School, AR

My mom is a really busy woman and she’s not always there for me and my phone has been my shelter since 5th grade. When I came home feeling sad in school, a couple of youtube videos can cheer me up. Smartphones also make contacting friends and families easier making me less lonely during my sad times. The use of phone also opens a new window of opportunities, I learnt how to edit and shoot videos from youtube. There was a time when my mental health was just not great and the internet saved me.

— shirley, fhs

My first friend was an online friend. I was in fifth grade and I was obsessed with Hamilton, and would spend hours reading about and listening to the songs. My family was on vacation in WildWood, and we were living in a small hotel. I was swimming in the pool and a kid came up to me, and I found out we both liked Hamilton a lot, so we started talking. At the end of the vacation the kid told me her email and we started texting on hangouts. We still text to this day. My phone played a big part in letting me stay in touch, and it built my relationship with her.

— Arianna Andriyevsky, Julia R. Masterman

More screen time can be beneficial.

As the life of a teenager continues to increase in its complexity and demands, the resources and tools a smartphone can provide help keep teenagers grounded. So, before adults chastise us for our use of phones (while they’re leveling up in Candy Crush) it’s important to show that phones are very powerful tools, sometimes too powerful.

With how many activities a teenager can be involved in these days, smartphones help make more productive use of their time, keeping up with meetings, get-togethers, and updates. Whether it be communicating with other club members, or simply catching up with friends, these communication tools help bring people closer without necessitating time-consuming travel.

— Sayre S., Ames High School

I am on my phone about three hours a day. The majority of this is spent on social media apps like snapchat or twitter and listening to music. My phone has a positive influence on me. I feel more connected to the world and what is going on and while that is not always a good thing it is nice to be informed and updated on events within seconds.

— Mehdi Sebghati, Ames High School

My average screen time is about 40 minutes per week. I typically look at news, talk with my relatives in China through WeChat, or go on Youtube to watch cooking videos … My phone does help me build my Chinese skills when texting in WeChat. On WeChat, I can also build relationships with my relatives and friends that I cannot meet face-to-face.

However, my parents are still very worried about my time on my phone. That’s because I have glasses, and my eyesight has been worsening every year. They express their concern by speaking my name in a warning tone when they think I’ve been on my phone long enough. I listen to them, because I know that they are trying to do the best for them.

— Daniella Liang, J.R. Masterman

Teenagers shouldn’t be on their phones as much.

I think adults should be worried about how much their child is on their phone. If my child was constantly on their phone I would be mad because it is disrespectful when you are with someone and they won’t get off their phone. I get offended and annoyed when my friends are on their phones instead of talking to me and I wouldn’t want to be that rude to someone so if my parents told me I shouldn’t be on my phone I think that’s a good thing. Parents are supposed to teach their children how to talk, walk, and ride a bike, they should teach them proper manners and to not go be on your phone for too long.

— Anna Diab, Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL

The answer to this question is different for me than many of my peers because unlike many “savvy” teens I have a flip phone. When I was fifteen I decided to stick with a flip phone, it solved my basic needs. I’m currently seventeen and have friends. It came down to me seeing kids and people on their phones at dangerous and inappropriate times. They were on their while driving, in school, and at the supper table. When I see somebody on their phone it reminds me that there is more to life. I am on my phone for less than ten minutes a day, still, I have survived. I can call and text people without the hassle of getting social media notifications. I’m not saying smartphones are bad they can be very useful. I just prefer reality.

— Ethan Morton, Ames, Iowa

I hate that I’m one of those teenagers who have a mini heart attack when they don’t feel their phone in their pocket. I know I’m not on my phone nearly as much as some of my peers, but even the time I do spend there I resent. Despite what the article says about technology not having any real negative influence on mental health, I can’t help but feel like it causes other problems.

We text and DM people when we have something to say, leaving behind outdated voice-calling and — gasp — that archaic practice of talking in person. So much of communication is nonverbal. Many today struggle to maintain eye contact, pay full undivided attention to others, and meaningfully interact in person. Screens are our modern-day masks and boy, do we love hiding behind them. While maybe it is true that technology doesn’t directly connect to the rise in mental disease and anxiety, it leads to a host of other problems, most prominent among these being social decay.

Communicating with loved ones, colleagues, friends, and more has never been simpler. According to Techspirited , “By allowing instant access to any desired destination across the globe, mobile phones have changed the landscape of communication. Not only globally, cell phones are important in day-to-day life” (“Advantages of Mobile Phones”). Besides the ease of communication, expressing oneself creatively has also never been so straightforward. As Wired says, “The smartphone, like the PC and the Internet before it, has turned into a unique outlet for our creative impulses, and it will affect our creative lives even more fundamentally” (Capps, Robert). With our applications, we can easily draw, take photographs, write, edit, paint, make videos, and more. Besides an ease of expression, the entertainment aspect of mobile phones is substantial. The website Outsource to India states that, “Entertainment and multimedia apps have many usages across industry verticals. These include video and audio players which play a variety of formats – such as remote control applications which play music tracks on your computer, apps that let you buy and sync music from the online stores and other devices, compose and record songs, personalized radio, digital TV, streaming of live scores and so on. Music and video apps are perhaps the most glaring example of the rise of multimedia in entertainment, and include notable examples such as S potify, TuneIn Radio, Apple Music, Play Music, Groove Music, Pandora , etc.” (“Entertainment and Multimedia Apps for Mobile Phones – O2I”). Basically, the mobile phone has become a miniature laptop computer in terms of its entertainment capabilities. Mobile phones are not only fantastic for increasing communication, creativity, and entertainment opportunities, but also for keeping us safe. According to Love to Know , mobile phones allow us to call for help, aid us in finding our cars, give us the opportunity to employ GPS to make sure we do not get lost, and gives us a hard weapon in hand (Tucker, Laura). The more applications you have, the greater chance you are safe. You might have a flashlight app, an emergency call app, find your home app, and much more. The key is to have these apps handy in case a difficult situation arises, instead of filing them away on your phone. Finally, mobile phones have a huge advantage over non-smartphones: the opportunity to use the internet. The internet allows you to search for information so quickly, that even competent people are often slower at recalling and coming up with the information you need. Even with an internet connection based on data, a Google search takes little time. You can search for the restaurant you want to go to, a word that you forgot, the location of the nearest police office for aid, and find any other pertinent information. With its help, we can be as smart and informed as we want to be at any given moment. It is hard to imagine, but we have all the data and information we will ever need on our mobile phone—that is a benefit that cannot be overlooked. As it has been shown, mobile phones give us the benefit of communicating easily, engaging in creative work through simple applications, being able to be entertained wherever we go, to be safer, and to access the internet with the press of a button. Who knows what more advantages the mobile phone will garner in the near future. Expository essays can be complex. They need a certain level of investigation, evaluation, and argumentation of ideas. Sometimes, it’s not easy to compile all the gained thoughts together. Some best paper writing services reviews show that there are websites that can provide you with assistance in putting your words on paper.

Beyond Communication: The Expansive Role of Mobile Phones in Education and Social Interaction

Smartphones have also become an integral tool for multitasking . They are not just communication devices but are also calendars, music players, personal trainers, cameras, and even wallets. We can check our emails while listening to music, or take conference calls while reviewing presentation slides. This simultaneous handling of tasks boosts our efficiency and optimizes time management. However, it’s also essential to strike a balance and not let our smartphones become a source of constant distraction. Moreover, the use of mobile phones in our daily life is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Whether it is setting an alarm to wake up, tracking physical activity, ordering groceries, or paying bills, cell phones have become our personal assistants, simplifying tasks, and adding value to our lifestyle.

When it comes to fostering digital communication , mobile phones, especially through social media , have significantly influenced the way we interact. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram have made it possible to stay connected with people across the globe, share opinions, and even mobilize social change. Mobile technology has not only made it easier for us to express ourselves but has also provided a platform to voice social issues, shaping the discourse of societal norms and values.

Today every mobile phone user has a social media account, which he manages from his mobile phone. Also, every form that we fill today has a mandatory column asking to provide the phone number. Today the number of a common mobile phone user is available with many marketing agencies whose main aim is to sell their product. This loop hole in privacy has led to unwanted and unexpected marketing calls. People get annoying calls from insurance agents, marketing executives, etc, trying to sell their products to the mobile phone user, who is not at all interested.

Next in line is social media. Social media is a place where people share their views, pictures etc with those who are connected. However, this has also compromised the privacy to a certain level as someone undesirable could also peek into your account and send annoying messages; trailing you regularly. Such unwanted social buffs could be really annoying and some people are known to be trailed so regularly using inappropriate and indecent comments that they had to totally shut down their social media account.

In the end it would be more appropriate to say that mobile phones are both a boon and a bane. The Use of Mobile Phones in Schools

The use of cell phones in schools by students has become a fiercely debatable topic that concerns all segments of society, including students, parents, teachers, scholars, and officials. People who mostly advocate for using mobile phones consider that these devices are beneficial in providing safety and seamless connection of pupils with parents and are useful for education overall. Nevertheless, I hold to the firm conviction that the use of cell phones should be banned or maximum restricted in schools since, in most cases, they disrupt the learning process and notably impair student’s performance. Thus, in this essay, I will present valid arguments supported by statistics, credible opinions, and facts, which prove the harm of using gadgets in educational premises.

The first argument is that mobile phones disrupt the learning process by causing interruptions and distractions of students’ attention from classroom activities. It is evident that any educational material requires intense mental concentration from individuals to be adequately comprehended and memorized. This aspect is fundamental in further student’s performance and progress since one missing or misunderstood item makes it impossible to master the whole topic or even subject successfully. Moreover, because of this, students become increasingly uninterested, bored, and sometimes contemptuous towards a particular subject. Thus, the primary task and responsibility of every school or educational establishment are to create a conducive environment that promotes the learning process and helps students attain excellent outcomes.

In this context, the students who have gadgets during school classes are usually inclined to use them for communication in social networks and viewing pictures and videos on the Internet, which produces unwanted distractions. Additionally, a constant risk exists that pupils can watch embarrassing videos or content of pornographic nature via smartphones, which corrupts the students’ morals and even makes them incapable of perceiving useful, educational information. As Danielle Einstein, a clinical psychologist from the University of Sydney, asserts, the overall situation is complicated because these devices provoke dopamine release leading to strong psychological addiction (Heizer). Furthermore, Henderson, a journalist for The Independent , describes a phenomenon called phantom vibrations that occur as a result of “learned bodily behavior” (Henderson). Namely, even the slightest vibration can make an individual feel like the phone vibrates, although, in fact, vibrations were absent. Numerous phone calls from outsiders, that is, parents, relatives, and friends, also cause interruptions in learning the material taught by the teacher.

Besides, many scholars have confirmed via experiments that the presence of mobile phones in school disrupts the learning process. For example, two researchers from Western Carolina University, Lawson and Henderson, conducted the study involving 120 first-year students, which demonstrated that students who were texting during lectures obtained considerably less score regarding comprehension and performance (Lawson and Henderson 121). This study only confirmed the results of the previous similar research indicating that “texting can reduce comprehension of class material at a rate of 10–20%” (Lawson and Henderson 119). It is worth noting that these results were related to comparatively simple material.

The second argument that can be advanced against the gadgets’ use is that they can adversely affect the individual’s cognitive capabilities that are vital for students’ performance and studying. For example, the recent research performed by Ward et al. concluded that even the close location of a smartphone near the user, for instance, on the desk, can worsen cognitive capacity and fluid intelligence (140). Moreover, cognitive damage is directly proportional to the dependence from a smartphone. The research indicates that “the presence of students’ mobile devices in educational environments may undermine both learning and test performance” (Ward et al. 151). It should be mentioned that the study consisted of two experiments that involved 520 and 275 smartphone users, respectively.

The third argument is connected with cheating since many students tend to use smartphones while taking a test or even an exam. For example, according to a Pew Research Center study, 35 percent of pupils use their phones to complete tests or assignments, and 65 percent of teens reported that they see how smartphones were used by others (Morin). Overall, in the educational environment, not only does cheating make it impossible to evaluate students correctly and rightly but also allows them not to prepare for exams appropriately. This has adverse consequences for their performance and the ability to master the necessary knowledge.

Another issue that gains the increasing alert among pedagogues and parents is that cell phones can promote cyberbullying that implies threats, harassments, humiliation, or torments by means of technology. Cyberbullying can be executed through social media sites or other websites and text messages or emails. Besides, this phenomenon has various forms, including impersonation, that is, fake accounts, trolling, flaming, namely, posting derogatory comments, cyberstalking, trickery, and denigration, that is, posting gossip and rumors about someone. According to the survey conducted by the Cyberbullying Research Center in 2016, around 34 percent of middle and high school students have experienced cyberbullying; some of them cyberbullied several times (McCullum). It should be specified that cyberbullying leads to significant negative outcomes and can cause depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation, low self-esteem, loss of interest in studies, and even using alcohol and drugs. Moreover, this type of bullying is difficult for teachers to track and stop.

The last argument is correlated with disconnection from face-to-face communication and a decrease in the students’ participation in outside and social activities. Working together and leading in-person discussions about a particular topic is an indispensable part of education. Moreover, involvement in sports and social activities play an essential role in the psychological and physical development of children and adolescents. With the excessive use of gadgets, many teens tend to avoid traditional, alive conversations and outside games and prefer to communicate using smartphones, play digital games, and hang on the Internet. In this regard, secondary schools in the UK began establishing stricter rules regarding cell phones, prohibiting using them in school premises individuals under sixteen years of age (Hymas). This measure has resulted in the fact that students become more active, alert, and sociable in the school setting.

To summarize, in this essay, I have advanced valid and persuasive arguments against the use of mobile phones in schools, maintained by statistics, credible opinions, and facts. These arguments include the disruption of the learning process, the adverse effect on the individual’s cognitive capabilities, cheating, cyberbullying, and disconnection from face-to-face communication. For example, the disruption of the learning process caused by possible distractions related to phone calls or communication in social networks while cyberbullying is accompanied by threats, harassments, humiliation, or torments using technology. In conclusion, as Nick Gibb, a British politician, said, “Every hour spent online and on a smartphone is an hour less talking to family, and it’s an hour less exercise, and it’s an hour less sleep” (Austin). Thus, people, especially teachers, students, and parents, should be aware of the harm of using mobile phones in schools to prevent unfortunate consequences concerning students’ performance, education, their mental health, overall.

Mobile Phones and Children

by Rony (Egypt )

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Last years have witnessed an increase in the number of threats and problems that unusually endangered children. In spite of being convinced that mobile phone might serve securing the child, I don't think it is an absolute importance. To start with the troublesome situations that might face the child to see how mobile phone could help him. First of all, threats that might endanger the child; kidnapping trials: the child could talk to his parents, or call for the police using his own portable phone, or falling in an emergency situation, like diabetic coma or asthmatic attacks Or getting wounded in the street he could also call his parents or ambulance. Second, complexities, that might be encountered these days, are for instance; getting lost while going school or home alone in this case making a call to his parents seeking help is very beneficial. Some new mobiles has many beneficial applications like maps, how to make fast foods in the absence of working parents, these apps would give a hand to children. To sum up, while complicated and threatening situations facing the child these days are rising, and mobile phones helpful applications and uses are increasing, I don't think that it is a must to give every child a mobile phone. As, this also, has its drawbacks on children, and not every family is leaving her child to face these problems alone. *** Is this a good essay? You can comment below on this Mobile Phone Essay.

can someone please proof read my answer to: The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? The ever changing society we live in these days is unfortunately acclaimed with increasing rates of crime making it a very unsafe place to live in for everyone. children safety is compromised where disturbing offences such as abduction and any kinds of abuse are more prevalent thee days. Due to this reason, the use of mobile phones particularly by children, have been considered as a must to address this issue. Parents or guardians nowadays have supplied their own children with mobile phones as a means of a safety reassuring device. Both parties benefit more from the technical use of a mobile phone especially in conditions we live, where dangers can arise at any point in time. Should safety be compromised from children, they can easily contact their parents or other members within the family, and other appropriate persons, such as the police, who is also concerned of their well being. This easy communication access, allows for relatives or the receiver on the line to act for safety in a timely manner. Furthermore, parents have the ease of mind to their children's whereabouts. The high technology of mobile phones allow them to easily contact or be informed with updates about their children's day. On the other hand, I believe such device is not a necessity for children in surviving this world evolved with crimes and complexities. Firstly, education can be provided to the young ones in regards to safety practices. This refers to knowing who can be trusted and not associating to strangers, never be physically in isolation and must be in large groups, and last but not least, informing them of where and who to go for safety, such as teachers, councillors or the police. These are very simple and cost effective, yet very effective ways in minimising and preventing dangers that can happen to children. Secondly, it is understandably important for parents to be aware of their children's day, however, constant communication which is considered as vital, can also interfere with these children's development of independence. Lastly, the use of mobile phones open endless opportunities of social and online gaming use, which can impact their interpersonal skills with other people and predispose them to violence. Evidently children are potentially imposed to dangers with their use of mobile phones. To conclude, although the device provide security for children while living in a troublesome and complicated world, I strongly believe it is unnecessary and inappropriate for children to own a mobile phone. Education and proper guidance should be provided for these children in order to live safely in this kind of environment we live in. GREATLY APPRECIATED IF YOU GUYS COMMENT ON IT ... :)

Cell Phones in the Classroom

by Deepak (Kathmandu)

It is argued that mobile phones and other electronic devices have no place in the classroom. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view? In the last decade, cell phones have become very famous and easily available throughout the world. Most of the students from across the globe have access to smartphones and they have been using these gadgets not only for study purposes but also for personal uses. However, I believe, the mobile phones should not be used inside the classroom because it distracts the pupils and also affect the effective interaction. One of the main reasons for not allowing mobile phones during the studying in classes is it hampers the student’s concentration. As a result, the student doesn’t understand the subject matter and gets poor grades in his mark sheet. For example, during my final year of undergraduate studies, there was a good student named Hari who failed in his favourite subject because of mobile chatting during the lecture times. So, to make a student distract less from mobile phones, these kinds of electronic devices should be kept out of the classroom. Another reason is a disturbance in proper discussion between teacher and students. Although the student can browse various sites using mobile data or Wi-Fi to get the information about subject matters in the classroom but he might lack to the point knowledge from his experienced teachers. In addition, he might waste too much time visiting the non-authentic sites. For instance, there are many personal blogs and websites where the student cannot get the relevant understanding of the subject matters. All in all, despite having a few advantages of using the mobile devices inside the classrooms, the students must not be allowed to use their cell phones to have the long-term good results for their studies and careers. Furthermore, this maintains good learning and teaching environment for both the students and teachers. *** Please help this students in their with their writing by feeding back on this IELTS Essay about Cell Phones in the Classroom.

Necessity of Mobile Phones Essay

by syed (Malaysia)

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? I agree that cellphones rather than an expensive commodity, is a must have for today's children as its function is not only for communication, but it also allows access to the worldwide web. Education has become more centralised and available for everyone online. In order to access information easily and rapidly, owning a cellphone is necessary. In the advent of technology, internet access is critical for knowledge, especially in the midst of current covid pandemic where tutorials are made online. Children no longer go to school, rather teachers expect every student to have at least a cellphone in order to access online classes. Increasing crime rate in the society and bullying in school have made children vulnerable to these perpetrators. Parents are not always there to supervise their kids, hence, cellphones allows children to contact family members when in danger without delay. Without cellphones, help might not be able to be attained immediately. However, unregulated access to the internet with the lack of supervision can lead to children browsing inappropriate content. Many studies have found that increase in time spent on screen has many negative impacts.Children lack fundamental communication skills. Dyslexia is also another common theme.Usage of mobile phone in the dark can lead to sleep disturbances, which can hamper children's concentrating ability in school. Owning a cellphone has become a necessity in the 21st century as it has many benefits. However, lack pf supervision can have a detrimental effect towards these children.

IELTS Essay - Necessity of Mobile Phones for Children

by Lalarukh

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? These days, there is an ongoing debate between people about how mobile phone have become a need for children due to the intense situation of the new era. While some people still argue that mobile phone have become an absolute need of a child, in my view, the disadvantages of mobile phone outweigh the advantages. In this essay i will explain my point of view by analysing both sides. These are several reason that i believe have cause more harm to children of keeping mobile phone then giving them benefit. Firstly, children spend much more time on cellphones rather than participating in other activities. It takes away precious time of sports and other recreational activities. Also, it affects the eye sight of the children. Many studies have shown that children who spend much more time on mobile phone have weak eye sight and thus end up wearing sight glasses at a very young age. Moreover, the more children spend time on mobile phone, the less exposure they have of the outer world. This reduces self confidence in children while dealing with people and socialising on a larger extent. From my personal experience, i would quote about my niece, who at a very young age have been given mobile phone. She spends majority of her time on games due to which she interacts less with the people around. Lastly, the use of mobile phone have damaged the mind of many children. The unnecessary or wrong use have made children exposed to certain objectionable things at a very young age. For example, there exist many application that are not for children under 18 years, but with mobile phone, children do have easy access to it. Now those who argue that due to the danger in the modern world have resulted the use of mobile phones claims that for the purpose of security it have become basic necessity. With fast moving education system, children have academies, schools and universities to go so with the help of mobile phone there remains a constant communication between the parent and a child. While, there is strong opinion on both sides of the case in my opinion, children still must be given mobile phone until a certain age. I would recommend that for the purpose of security due to the danger presiding in the outside world, the use of mobile phone can be allowed only in the hours of school, college etc or during travelling. Also, a strict check must be kept by the parents on usage of mobile phone .

Restricted Use of Mobile Phones Essay

by Aditya (Uttar Pradesh)

Some schools have restricted the use of mobile phones. Is this a positive or negative development? Students of most schools carry cell phones with them. While these devices play a vital role in safety, connectedness and convenience, a number of schools have prohibited their use on campus. In my opinion, this is a positive decision and can benefit students not academically but also physically and socially as well. Restricting phone use in the classroom itself can improve learning. Uninterrupted studies can result in exceptional results as the primary focus remains on the subject. A continuously ringing or beeping device, for instance, can distract both teacher and student as well as other learners too and also amplifies the urge of the individual to check their phone every now and then for texts, calls and other notifications. Even the most observant teacher cannot ignore them from sneakily checking their messages or scrolling through irrelevant content mid-class. This eventually leads to imperfect knowledge which can adversely affect an individual's academic progress since half knowledge possess no value. Banning cell phones can prevent happening of these events and can bolster the academic performance of learners. In addition to banning phones in the classroom, constraining them outside the classroom as well can result in students wellbeing. Indeed, if cellular phone are banned at recess, children will be left with no other option than to interact with other students and indulge in numerous physical activities. Kids can play games, sports, or just sit and chat with their friends which is far better than sitting alone hunched over a screen. Without limitation enforced by schools, children simply cannot draw the line on their phone use. These social and physical gains are only possible with stern phone rules. In conclusion, despite cell-phones are a fundamental part of our modern lives, I strongly deem that their use in schools should be controlled. With firm boundaries and bans in some conditions, students are able to learn better, build up friendships and engage in healthier pursuits.

There are advantages and disadvantages to mobile phones. First, let’s discuss the positive aspects. Our mobile phones facilitate easy communication with friends and family. With our phones, we may use the internet to discover new things as well. With their maps, they make it easy for us to locate our route, and we can even snap photos with them.

However, there are also some drawbacks. Overuse of phones by some individuals can be problematic. It might cause eye pain or even make it difficult to fall asleep. Furthermore, excessive phone use might cause us to lose focus when driving or walking, which is risky.

Thus, we must use our phones responsibly. It’s important to remember to take pauses and not use them excessively. Similar to consuming candy, moderation is key when it comes to this. Utilizing our phones sensibly may make them enjoyable and beneficial. However, we must exercise caution so as not to allow them to cause us issues.

With so many benefits, mobile phones have become an essential part of our life. They facilitate communication and let us stay in touch with loved ones no matter where we are or when we want. Additionally, mobile phones offer instant access to information, which keeps us up to date on global events. They are also useful for navigation, taking pictures to save memories, and even handling our money using mobile banking.

But there are also some disadvantages to these advantages. Overuse of a phone can become addictive, diverting our attention and decreasing our productivity. Extended periods of screen usage can lead to health problems like strained eyes and disturbed sleep cycles. Other drawbacks include privacy issues and the possibility of cyberbullying, which emphasise how crucial it is to use mobile phones properly.

In conclusion, even while mobile phones are incredibly beneficial for communication, information access, and convenience, it is important to consider the possible risks they may pose to one’s health, privacy, and general well-being. Maintaining a balance in the use of mobile phones is crucial to maximise their benefits while minimising their drawbacks.

Although you hope that you will never have to do this, you sometimes need to get in contact with your school-aged child while they're in class. This could be because of a death in the family, an accident, or other family emergency that may require their attention or attendance.

  • By being able to text or call your child directly, you also help alleviate the workload of the school's administrative team.
  • Phones are also super useful during recess and lunch hours when students aren't in class and may be difficult to find.
  • Parents can also reduce the problem of knowing where kids are after school when they have the ability to call or text them and vice versa.
  • Text messages can make communicating easy and discreet. Parents and kids can keep each other updated throughout the day.

Works a as Cost-Effective Learning Aid

Students who have a phone can use handy applications to actually help with homework and schoolwork. These apps are designed for students to assist in learning. Similar to the programs found on a laptop or desktop computer, they can reinforce important skills. Being able to look up facts quickly on the internet is also handy on phones.

If a student needs assistance with classwork and doesn't have access to a computer, they can use a phone in a snap. In fact, the National Education Association reports that smartphones can often be cost-effective for schools that can't afford to purchase technology for all students.

Quick Tip Having a phone at school can also help kids do their homework after school. On the bus, kids can use the internet to work on homework, but with a phone, they can set up a mobile hotspot for their Chromebooks or just look things up as needed. This lets them stay ahead of the game with work and get that much-needed chill time when they get home.

Handy as a Studying and Memory Aid

Cell phones can be beneficial to students when reviewing and studying for exams or tests. Using a phone camera, kids can take pictures in class. This is great for science class, for example, where they may be exposed to certain creatures, plants, and other things that they probably won't encounter anywhere else. This is much more effective than simply producing a quick sketch.

Pictures can also be useful to:

  • Photograph an assignment
  • Photograph a whiteboard discussion
  • Help students remember a step-by-step process

Reviewing photos or videos later can help students better understand the procedure in metalwork, woodwork, or other hands-on courses.

Useful for Calendar and Task List

Nearly every mobile phone has a built-in calendar function, and this can be very useful for kids who have a hard time remembering test dates, assignment due dates, and other such details where time is of the essence. By putting these in a cell phone organizer and assigning an alarm, they'll never forget again! After all, paper-based agendas and notebooks can be easily lost, forgotten, overlooked, or scribbled over.

The organization doesn't stop there, either. Kids can use the Notes app or other similar note-taking programs to make a simple task list or jot down reminders about things they need to do. Think of the phone as a one-stop organization shop.

Helpful for Note-Taking With Voice Notes

Cell phones' voice recording feature can be beneficial to students who would like a quick way to keep track of what they need to do. After all, students may not always have immediate access to a notepad, so using a cell phone to "jot down" important information can be helpful. There are numerous voice memo apps that can be useful for both teachers and students in a classroom.

Quick Tip Voice recording can even help make classroom instruction more accessible to students who learn in different ways. After all, not everyone learns by writing notes or reading textbooks. Some kids benefit from being able to listen to a lecture or lesson several times to really understand it.

Adds Peace of Mind With Phone GPS Tracking

GPS tracking can be a benefit of cell phones to parents who want to be able to keep tabs on their kids' whereabouts. Using GPS to track a cell phone can provide peace of mind to concerned parents and teachers if a student is reported missing or has gone somewhere of concern. GPS tracking can also inform parents that their children have arrived to and from school safely .

Useful for Storing Emergency Contact Information

Important phone numbers can be easily stored in cell phones. For students, this can be important in case they become sick while at school or are in an emergency situation. Their cell phone can contain important numbers such as their parents' work, doctor's office, dentist, and who to call in case of an emergency, as well as numbers of close family members and friends.

Quick Tip That contact info isn't only useful in emergencies, either. Kids can form social connections with peers and keep track of other kids' numbers and contact info with a phone (it's right there, so it's easy to add a phone number for that new kid in class). Then they can reach out after school to build those bonds of friendship.

Fosters Classroom Collaboration

Cell phones can assist in providing a modern alternative to standard teaching and can encourage student participation. For example:

  • The website platform Poll Everywhere lets teachers create poll questions to which students can respond via their cell phones.
  • Students can also use cell phones to collaborate with each other and also to connect with kids in other schools or geographic areas.
  • Phones can also connect students to specialists in specific subjects for assistance or advice.

Offer Training for Modern Living

Cell phones have unquestionably become fixtures in everyday life for most adults. In fact, 89% of students between ages 13 and 17 use mobile devices regularly. Cell phones will not only be a part of their everyday lives now and in the future but will also be important in many careers. Knowing how to use mobile devices effectively is an important skill to have in modern society. Incorporating mobile technology in the classroom is key to preparing students for the future.

Provides a Classroom Research Tool

Smartphones are equipped with calculators, a plethora of apps, the internet, and research tools. Showing students how to use their smartphones to seek out information and educate themselves is a great lesson to promote. Students are using social networks to find answers to questions that they don't understand or know. If students and teachers collaborate and collectively seek out concepts that are confusing, using cell phones to do so can be an incredibly powerful tool that expands teacher's lesson plans for the better.

Quick Tip Phones also offer a great way for kids to learn about critical thinking. They can be a hands-on way to teach about avoiding scams, identifying questionable sources of information, and how to use the web safely.

Promotes Student Independence

Enabling students to use their phones in the classroom inherently develops trust between the students and their teacher. Although phones can cause distraction, creating highly engaging lesson plans where the students are actively using their phones to find answers can be a great way to promote healthy cell phone usage for the purpose of learning.

Fosters Trust Between Students and Teachers

Teachers who allow students to use their cellphones in class must be able to trust that their students are participating appropriately. To do so, it's important to introduce engaging content and monitor cell phone usage. This creates a great opportunity for teachers to model healthy cell phone usage for their students. This means that the teacher and students work together while using their cell phones during the lesson plan and disengage from using their phones when not appropriate.

Creates More Inclusive Learning Environment

For students who learn and/or communicate differently, using their cell phone as a learning and communicating aid can make a world of difference. Allowing cell phones in the classroom opens up the door for many students who are differently abled to be able to participate and thrive in the classroom setting, where they would otherwise have difficulty.

Remember to Weigh Both Sides

Bringing a phone to school can have both positive and negative consequences . Many schools have set rules in place regarding cell phones and whether they're allowed in the school or classroom. Parents can decide whether their child should bring a phone to school — as long as it is not against the rules — and set appropriate guidelines regarding the use of the phone. Like any tool, a phone in school is all about how you use it.
