Every Phantom Troupe Member Ranked From Strongest To Weakest

Every Phantom Troupe Member Ranked From Strongest To Weakest

Anna Lindwasser

The Phantom Troupe is a gang of thieves known both for their ruthlessness and their intense loyalty to one another. Some admire them for their thieving prowess, while others despise them for taking lives without a second thought. Love them or hate them, they're exceptionally strong - but who among them is the strongest?

With so many powerful members, it's hard to say who the strongest Phantom Troupe member is. It could be the leader, Chrollo Lucilfer, who has the ability to steal other people's abilities at will. It could also be Hisoka Morow, who temporarily joined for his own purposes and managed to totally bamboozle the rest of the troupe. Or maybe it's Uvogin, whose raw physical strength is unparalleled.

Who do you think are the most powerful members? Be sure to vote them up.

Chrollo Lucilfer

Chrollo Lucilfer

Ask anybody in the Phantom Troupe who they think is the strongest member and they'll probably say their boss, Chrollo Lucilfer. While he might not be as physically powerful as say, Uvogin, his command over the group's loyalty combined with his Nen techniques make him a formidable foe.

Chrollo's primary ability is Skill Hunter. This allows him to take Nen techniques from other people and store them in a conjured book for his own use. To do this, he must see the technique in action, ask the person to explain their ability, and then have them touch the book's front cover - all within an hour. It's not easy to accomplish, but he's managed it enough times to amass a panoply of techniques, including Indoor Fish,  Teleportation, Lovely Ghostwriter, and more.

Hisoka Morow

Hisoka Morow

Hisoka only joined the Phantom Troupe so that he could fight Chrollo, and he bounced at the earliest opportunity. So, he's not exactly a true member. That said, he's one of the most frightening people in the world of  Hunter x Hunter,  both for his creepy interest in Gon and for his raw power.

Aside from being freakin' jacked, Hisoka has a unique Nen ability called Bungee Gum. If you've seen the show, you heard Machi explain it four times in a row, but here we go again. He can turn his aura into a sticky, gumlike substance that can be used to bind opponents, defend him against projectiles, allow him to walk on walls, and even close up wounds.

His other ability, Texture Surprise, lets him change the texture and appearance of any flat surface to his liking. That's how he managed to create a fake Phantom Troupe tattoo.

Feitan Portor

Feitan Portor

Feitan Portor is the troupe's interrogator, a task he usually accomplishes through torture. After defeating the Chimera Ant Zazan, he becomes the interim leader until they find Chrollo.

In order to defeat Zazan, he uses a particularly terrifying combination of techniques: Pain Packer and Rising Sun. Pain Packer is activated only when he's sufficiently angry. It allows him to conjure a suit of armor that will protect him from the next attack he unleashes. That attack is Rising Sun, which involves summoning a miniature sun and scorching his opponent with it. Its heat depends on how badly he's been hurt up until that point.

Because of this technique, the rest of the Troupe knows to get the heck out of the way whenever Feitan appears to be enraged.

Illumi Zoldyck

Illumi Zoldyck

The eldest of the Zoldyck siblings, Illumi is one of the most unsettling. He trained Killua and continued to try to control him from afar with mind-control needles. While he's incredibly loyal to his family, he has concerns that the family might not approve of, such as his desire to control Alluka, and his strange contractual relationship with Hisoka. That last relationship is why he joins the Phantom Troupe - he wants to destroy Hisoka and thinks it's the best way to do so.

What abilities does he bring to both his family and the Troupe? Illumi can use needles for a wide variety of purposes, largely focused on control. Using Needle People, he can force living people to do his bidding. Using Corpse Control, he can do the same thing with the bodies of those who have passed. He can also implant needles to create hypnotic suggestions, as he does with Killua. Finally, he can dramatically alter his appearance using Body Alteration, which is how he's able to appear as Gittarackur at the start of the series.

Phinks Magcub

Phinks Magcub

Though he's reckless and hard to get along with, Phinks is still a valuable member of the Phantom Troupe. His most prominent skill is an enhancement type Nen ability called Ripper Cyclotron, which he uses to destroy a chimera ant. Ripper Cyclotron allows him to increase the strength of his punches by rotating his fist in a circle and concentrating aura in it. The drawback is that he has trouble controlling said punches.

Uvogin

Uvogin's physical strength is unmatched. Without using Nen at all, he can easily beat the stuffing out of most opponents. When he does use Nen, he uses it to enhance his physical attacks. This is called Big Bang Impact, a technique where he enhances a right straight punch with aura, giving it about as much power as a missile. It's simple, but extremely effective - he managed to destroy Kurapika's arm with it even though the latter was using Emperor Time.

Unfortunately for him, it wasn't enough to defeat Kurapika, who was able to defeat him using Chain Jail and Judgment Chain.

Nobunaga Hazama

Nobunaga Hazama

Unlike many of the other members, Nobunaga Hazama doesn't display any special Nen-based powers. However, he's a master swordsman who uses Iaidō, a type of swordplay that involves very quickly removing the blade from its scabbard, striking, cleaning the blade, and then replacing it in the blink of an eye. He uses this skill when keeping Gon and Killua hostage in the hopes that they'll eventually be willing to join the Phantom Troupe.

Machi Komacine

Machi Komacine

Machi Komacine is the Phantom Troupe's unofficial medic, in part because of one of her primary Nen abilities: Nen Stitches. This ability lets her sew wounds closed or even reattach severed limbs. The stitches also seem to have regenerative properties, because once closed, the wounds are nonexistent.

Machi can also use her Nen Threads offensively. Sometimes this means using them to control her opponents like puppets, sometimes it means cutting or strangling them - it all depends on what she needs in the moment.

Shalnark

Shalnark is one of the most intelligent members of the Phantom Troupe. As a licensed hunter, he has access to information that other members don't. What's more, he knows what to do with that information. He's often the person who comes up with the group's more complicated plans.

In addition to his brains, he also has some pretty useful Nen-based abilities: Black Voice and Autopilot Mode. Black Voice involves sticking an antenna into a target's body and controlling them remotely through a cell phone. He uses this repeatedly when dealing with members of the mafia. Autopilot Mode lets him do the same thing to himself - until he completes a difficult task he instructs himself to complete beforehand, he'll have enhanced strength, but he won't remember what happened afterwards, and he'll experience severe muscle pain for several days.

Shizuku Murasaki

Shizuku Murasaki

Despite not being the strongest in physical combat, Shizuku Murasaki is one of the most valuable members of the Troupe. That's because of her Nen ability, a conjuration technique called Blinky. Blinky is a vacuum that can suck up an infinite amount of any non-living substance. This is invaluable for the Troupe's more grisly missions, since she can use Blinky to clean up after a massacre. Because she can't suck up anything made from Nen, she can also use Blinky to detect Nen-based traps.

But the most dangerous use of Blinky is one you might not expect. While blood does consist of living cells, it's not considered a living thing here, so Blinky can suck all the blood from someone's body. She does this when battling the chimera ant Pike.

Bonolenov Ndongo

Bonolenov Ndongo

Bonolenov Ndongo doesn't display his abilities until a fight with a Chimera Ant, but when he does they're totally unexpected. He hails from a tribe that drills holes into the bodies of its male members, turning them into a sort of human flute. He uses these holes to play music that has different Nen-based effects.

The first is The Prologue, which lets him conjure armor and weaponry. The second is Jupiter, which lets him summon a gigantic sphere that looks like the aforementioned planet. It will crush his opponent unless they can escape the sound of his music - which is more or less impossible because it chases targets at high speeds.

His music also allows him to transform, but he hasn't fully mastered this technique yet.

Kalluto Zoldyck

Kalluto Zoldyck

Kalluto Zoldyck is the youngest member of the Zoldyck family. He replaces Hisoka in the Phantom Troupe. His motives for joining aren't entirely clear, but he says that he wants to "get his brother back." That brother is probably Killua, but that's not confirmed.

At only ten years old, Kalluto's abilities aren't fully developed - but they have a lot of potential. Using Surveillance Paper Dolls, Kalluto is able to spy on people who he creates a paper doll version of and sticks a piece of confetti to. This is so subtle that he's able to spy on other Troupe members without them noticing.

He can also use Dance of the Serpent's Bite, an ability that involves showering an opponent with confetti and controlling them with a paper fan. At first, the ability seems harmless, but it can easily slice a target to ribbons, as it does to a chimera ant.

Franklin Bordeau

Franklin Bordeau

As one of the founding members of the Phantom Troupe, Franklin Bordeau is incredibly loyal - not to the individuals in the troupe, but to its survival as a whole. That means he's willing to annihilate fellow members for the sake of the group.

His Nen technique, Double Machine Gun, lets him detach his fingertips and spray high-speed bullets from them. He uses this ability on the audience at a Yorknew City auction.

Pakunoda

As one of the founding members of the Phantom Troupe, Pakunoda is incredibly loyal to the organization - so loyal, in fact, that she took her own life in order to give the rest of them information about Kurapika's abilities.

Prior to her demise, Pakunoda served the Troupe with two Nen abilities: Psychometry and Memory Bomb. Using Psychometry, she can extract the memories and thoughts of anyone who she touches. It's unclear how far back these memories go, but at the very least she can extract recent ones.

Using Memory Bomb, she can can share her own memories by shooting someone in the head with a Nen bullet. These bullets cause no damage. If she shoots someone with a memory she extracted from them, they will forget that memory forever.

Kortopi

Much is unknown about Kortopi, one of the most mysterious members of the group. We don't even know how old he is, and we rarely see him engage in combat. In fact, Hisoka is able to destroy him with seemingly little effort.

But Kortopi does have one ability that makes him a crucial member of the team - Gallery Fake. When he touches an object with his left hand, he can create an exact replica in his right. He can also track the movements of the replica by touching the original, making it ideal for spying.

There are some drawbacks: the replicas only last for 24 hours, and the move doesn't work on conjured objects or living things  - he can copy them, but they either won't have the same affect or won't be alive.

How impressive is your knowledge of Hunter x Hunter? Is it more impressive than the properties of Bungee Gum? Rankings of everything in the HxH universe, from strongest nen abilities to the saddest moments in the series.

All Characters, Ranked

Hunter x Hunter: Every Member Of The Phantom Troupe, Ranked By Strength

The Phantom Troupe has some mind-bogglingly strong members but even among the strong, there are those who are stronger.

While the Hunter Association in the world of Hunter X Hunter may provide its Hunters with unlimited opportunities, some Nen users still turn to crime, like the Phantom Troupe. And, they're no joke, considering their members — called Spiders — have Class-A Bounties on their heads. As a result, their activities aren't just infamous across the world, but they have a fearsome reputation as well.

RELATED: The Best Isekai Manga That Do Not Have An Anime

In fact, the Phantom Troupe remains a fan favorite amongst Hunter x Hunter fans primarily because its members are so well designed and well-written . Well, that and the fact that Kurapika, a main cast member, made it their life goal to hunt the Phantom Troupe down. Which, thinking back, makes it extra odd that Gon hangs out with (and so often forgives) the current Troupe member Hisoka. However, some members of the Phantom Troupe just dominate the others in terms of power level.

Updated April 8th, 2023 by Jacob Buchalter: With the news of Hunter x Hunter's tragic cancellation , fans are looking just about anywhere for more HxH content. While it's understandable to cancel the story due to mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi's health problems (which is why the series has been on and off of hiatus in recent years), it's a shame that they couldn't work out a way to have Togashi keep writing and someone else illustrate the adventurers of characters like Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and more recently even Leorio. The Succession War arc and eventual Dark Continent arc were well underway and fans finally got a glimpse into the history of the Phantom Troupe and where it all begin. So, to reminisce on these fantastic characters, let's go through the Phantom Troupe once again and see how they stack up compared to each other.

Disclaimer: There will be manga spoilers for all characters mentioned

Starting things off with one of the more mysterious Phantom Troupe members, Kortopi was the twelfth person, or "Spider", to join the group. He is not at all shy about admitting he’s the weakest member in terms of physical strength. But, this is Hunter X Hunter, a world where raw physical power doesn’t mean anything in the face of well-honed Nen abilities.

Sadly, Kortopi’s Hatsu technique, Gallery Fake, is also not very suited for combat, as it basically boils down to him being able to create perfect copies of non-living objects with his Conjuration-type Nen energy. Or, at least, that's what anime-only viewers think. In actuality, the Hunter x Hunter manga has already shown the potential of this Hatsu as Chrollo used it in combination with a few other abilities in his deathmatch against Hisoka in Heaven's Arena. Even then, it was only worthwhile due to Chrollo being able to use it in combination with other Nen abilities, and with how quickly Kortopi was slain by Hisoka after the match, it's clear he never figured out how to fight with Gallery Fake himself.

14 Pakunoda

Like Kortopi, Pakunoda is a very useful member of the Phantom Troupe, but her Nen techniques aren’t exactly suited for combat. All of her abilities are in the "Specialist" category, and they're all centered around the concept of memories and mind-reading. Using her Nen ability, known as Psychometry, Pakunoda could read a person’s memories, overwrite them, and even implant memories into others using an ability called Memory Bomb. This was a technique in which she conjures “bullets” made of Nen that hold the memories in question before firing said bullet into her desired recipient, doing no physical damage but implanting the memories into their mind.

All of these powers are obscenely useful for an organization so centralized on secrecy and thievery like the Phantom Troupe, but they aren’t exactly “combat-type” powers. These rankings aren't going to follow the canon 'strength' rankings of the Troupe, but in this case, it was right on the money putting Pakunoda in the eleventh slot.

13 Franklin Bordeau

People are right to associate the hulking Franklin Bordeau with the concept of sheer power. In terms of physical strength, Franklin ranks fourth amongst the Troupe's members. However, anyone who assumed that this meant Franklin was a close-combat fighter is entirely wrong. Instead, Franklin is the only Emitter-type Nen user in the Troupe, funnily enough. And, while he's gigantic now, the flashback to the Troupe's origins in the manga shows that he was a relatively average-sized kid, so this change in stature only really begins after the Troupe went from a video-dubbing group of kids to a full criminal organization.

Franklin himself possesses already remarkable strength and stamina, paired with equally admirable speed and reflexes. As an Emitter, Franklin can utilize his aura to release it in various forms. He prefers to release Nen-bullets through the barrels in his fingers, the tips of which he cut off himself. Normally, Emitters would just expel the Nen bullets from the tips of their fingers with no issue, but Franklin went all the way with them because he felt it would work better, and oddly enough it did, as self-imposed limitations absolutely make Nen abilities more powerful.

12 Kalluto Zoldyck

Being one of the esteemed children of the Zoldyck family (the same family as Killua) means that Kalluto is already superhuman in many ways, even before using Nen. However, Kalluto himself admits that he's the weakest member of the Troupe, at least to the group of members currently around him. Interestingly, this doesn't mean Kalluto underestimates his strength, rather its just that the Phantom Troupe is that strong on average.

As someone who has been trained as an assassin all his life at the Zoldyck estate , Kalluto already possesses advanced speed, agility, various elemental resistances, and weapons specialization. Kalluto can create afterimages of himself with Rhythm Echo, an advanced assassination technique that doesn't even use Nen.

Though, in terms of Nen, Kalluto is a Manipulator, a Nene specialization perfect for espionage and assassinations. His Surveillance Paper Dolls ability allow him to essentially put trackers on people with a paper doll in their likeness that lets him hear everything near that person. The sheer fact that none of the Phantom Troupe even noticed this Nen ability was being used is proof of Kalluto's expertise. But that's not all, as these paper techniques are actually quite useful in combat, so much so that Kalluto uses his Dance of the Serpent's Bite Nen ability playfully while going up against a fearsome Chimera Ant (though not at all comparable to someone like Meruem ), making sure to take his time and tear the Ant apart piece-by-piece with mere scraps of paper.

11 Nobunaga Hazama

Having the appearance of a traditional samurai, Nobunaga Hazama and his trusty katana already imply some degree of battle finesse. In terms of sheer strength, he ranks ninth among the group, which makes sense given that Gon beat him in an arm-wrestling match. However, rather than raw brute force, Nobunaga has shown that he specializes in dexterity and finesse, as all of his kills with his blade have had basically zero wasted movement.

RELATED: The Best Anime From The 90s

At his core, Nobunaga is a swordsman, capable of using his enhanced physical traits, preternatural perception, and observation techniques to maintain control in combat. As an Iaido specialist, Nobunaga can quickly draw his blade, make a lethal strike, and place it back on its scabbard within a micro-second. Befitting his combat specialty is his Nen nature as an Enhancer, boasting a powerful aura he could potentially use to enhance his physical abilities. In the later manga arc, primarily the Succession War arc, Nobunaga has been able to show off even more of his battle prowess and general thought process. But, the most absurd part is, he still hasn't revealed his actual 'Nen Ability'. The whole routine of using En to create a 'sphere of influence' where Nobunaga expertly cuts whoever steps inside in an instant is just a battle technique, it's not his Nen Ability. While this was amazing while the series was still going, now that it's been canceled it's absolutely tragic that fans never got to see what Nobunaga was truly capable of.

10 Shizuku Murasaki

The Specialist category of Nen abilities always seems to involve the weirdest powers, so it’s obvious why so many people instantly assumed that the Spider with the 8th tattoo, Shizuku Murasaki, was a Specialist/ After all, she's running around using a magical vacuum cleaner AKA Blinky, that seemingly has infinite capacity. But, in truth, Shizuku is a Conjurer. However, unlike Kortopi, Shizuku is adept at close combat (or at least capable) and her Conjuration-type Hatsu is versatile enough that it has applications both in and out of combat.

She’s got a great battle sense, seems to have admirable speed compared to the other Phantom Troupe members, and her Blinky Ability allows her to tackle problems in some truly unique ways.

9 Machi Komacine

Machi Komacine has the appearance of a feudal Japanese kunoichi, which sort of matches Nobunaga's whole vibe. And, like Nobunaga, her appearance makes sense, given her absurd speed and dexterity. When combined with her enhanced strength and endurance, Machi is a terrifying combatant. She also possesses an incredible degree of muscle control, displaying resistance from otherwise fatal injuries. In terms of strength, she is ranked sixth among the Troupe's members. As an individual Machi plays the part of a 'cold but caring' criminal all too perfectly, so much so that she gives people like Hisoka a bit too much slack.

However, perhaps more interesting than anything else is Machi's Nen Ability. As a Transmuter , she "transmutes" her Nen energy into threads, and she specializes in using these Nen threads to do a variety of things. With Nen Stitches, Machi demonstrated the ability to not just heal injuries but even reattach severed limbs with ease. But, she's not just a healer, as Machi has stated that the strength of these strings is directly proportional to their length. So, with enough power behind a short thread less than a meter long, Machi could likely cut through most anything. Taking that into consideration, suddenly these aren't just threads anymore, and Machi is looking a lot more fearsome as a fighter.

8 Bonolenov Ndongo

Despite his truly 'odd' appearance and people assuming he really was just a side character , Bonolenov Ndongo still ranks eighth among the ranks of the Troupe. Bonolenov is famous not just for his enhanced strength but also for his incredible speed and reflexes. Thanks to his agility, stamina, and showmanship, Bonolenov not only dashes into combat, he does so gracefully as well, which makes sense, given that he comes from the fictional tribe of 'Gyudondond', a group of people who are world-renowned for the dance-like combat style using their self-made holes in their bodies.

In terms of Nen, Bonolenov proved strong enough to use more than two Nen types. However, he does incorporate this in combat - often using his man-made holes to create unique sounds via Battle Cantabile to conjure Nen weapons, armor, and more. He's able to use Battle Cantabile: Prologue to conjure up both a spear and battle garb and Battle Cantabile: Jupiter literally has him conjuring up a miniature version of Jupiter to crash down on his enemies. Additionally, in the Succession War arc, Bonolenov also hinted at an ability called Battle Cantabile: Metamorphosen, which apparently lets Bonolev transform his appearance in a variety of ways, though readers never got the chance to see this one in action.

Shalnark was a character that, at a glance, seems like he wouldn't 'vibe' with the rest of the Phantom Troupe. He was cheerful, responsible, and just very bubbly in general. But, as the show goes on, it becomes more and more clear that this jovial personality is just a facade for his darker tendencies. At his core, Shalnark was still a relatively emotionless murderer who thinks of the victims of his Manipulation-type Nen as mere 'puppets that are meant to be broken'.

In terms of ability, Shalnark was a Manipulator-type Hatsu user and one that used Nen needles implanted in his victim's neck to control them in a first-person view like video game characters through his phone. It was a fantastic technique in general, and Chrollo showed it off even more in his death match against Hisoka. In fact, Shalnark could even use this ability on himself, essentially triggering an 'Auto-Pilot' mode that was given a task and would not end until Shalnark's body had completed said task. Of course, this ability had some pretty nasty recoil, and it's a shame that Hisoka caught Shalnark in the brief period of time when Chrollo still had his ability, as it meant he had no way of fighting back against this killer clown.

6 Phinks Magcub

Tracksuit-touting Phinks Magcub looks like the typical anime delinquent, and he sort of is one at first, but as more events transpire in front of him, Phinks starts to think a bit more. Physically, Phinks is second only to Uvogin - meaning he's currently the physically strongest in the Troupe after Uvogin's demise. Though, funnily enough, he never even had a chance to show off this physical ability in the Succession War arc, as he mostly served as a conversational character to push the plot forward.

Given his status, it's expected for Phinks to possess incredible strength, durability, and stamina. He pairs this with astonishing speed and hand-to-hand prowess, capable of breaking people's necks in a flash. Moreover, his Nen nature as an Enhancer allows him to further augment his physical abilities. But, his real bread-and-butter comes from his Hatsu ability that's mind-blowingly strong simply because it's so simple. The ability is called Ripper Cyclotron, and it's an ability where every time Phinks 'winds' his arm in a clockwise direction, the Nen Aura in his fist increases, which means the next punch deals more damage. It's unclear if every new rotation multiples the current Nen Aura by a specific amount or if its exponential, but 15 rotations were enough to blow apart a Chimera Ant , and Phinks himself stated that likely half of those rotations would have still done the job.

5 Feitan Portor

Enigmatic and black-clad Feitan Portor serves as Number 2 amongst the Troupe and even served as their 'leader' during Chrollo's absence. However, being the Troupe's de facto leader is a testament to his sheer combat prowess, as the group is constantly fighting to prove themselves capable of taking this 'leader' mantle. While he's the fifth among the Troupe in terms of physical power, Feitan compensates for this with his lightning-fast speed. In fact, his speed, as seen so far, is one of the fastest of any character in the franchise, save for Killua , which makes Feitan all the more fearsome, given that the other speedsters fans have seen have moved at incomprehensibly fast speeds.

In terms of Nen, Feitan's Hatsu might not be what people expect based on his fighting style and general appearance. The common-sense guess would be that it increases his speed, but that's actually not it at all. Feitan is a Transmuter, capable of transforming Nen's natural properties into another type of energy. When enraged, Feitan can hide in a Conjuration-type Nen suit of armor called the Pain Packer that protects him from his true Emitter-type ability, Rising Sun.

When Rising Sun activates, it manifests a massive ball of blazing hot Nen aura in the area, similar to a sun. The only catch is, the actual 'heat' from this ability is directly proportional to the amount of damage Feitan has recently suffered. So, Feitan utilizes this by trying to defeat his opponent with his Umbrella Sword , and when enough damage has been done to him or he gets irritated enough, he switches to the Rising Sun approach. Either way, the upward potential of this ability and the scale of the damage it can deal is already scary, but the fact that Feitan only relies on it when he has to is what truly makes this Troupe member terrifying.

This grizzly and bulky fellow is the literal strongest member of the Troupe in terms of raw physical strength, boasting an impenetrable fighting spirit. While he doesn't possess any prowess in martial arts, Uvogin pairs his immense strength with enhanced speed and agility to take down foes with swings and punches. Likewise, he possesses remarkable durability, stamina, and endurance to last in prolonged battles.

For the most part, Nen users all have a 'type-specialty' that they're all naturally talented at . Killlua's specialty is in Transmutation so he uses that type of Nen most often. As a result of this specialty, Nen users develop techniques based around it, with only a few branching out to the next type on the Nen Hexagon, and even fewer (and more foolish) trying to use abilities directly across the Hexagon from their specialty.

For example, a Conjuration specialist will typically use Manipulation or Transmutation-type techniques if they were to use anything outside of Conjuration but would be foolish to invest much time or effort into Emission, as that is their weakest typing. But, Uvogin was the ultimate Enhancer and he only ever used Enhancer abilities, which made all of his Enhancement techniques that much stronger. Honestly, it was just bad luck (or too much pride) that Uvogin happened to go against Kurapika , a person who literally designed their entire technique around defeating the Phantom Troupe. There aren't many other people in Hunter X Hunter that Uvogin would lose to.

3 Illumi Zoldyck

As a member of the Zoldyck Family, Illumi is trained in the art of assassination just like all his other siblings (excluding Alluka). Outside his Nen, Illumi not only boasts incredible physical strength and speed but he also has remarkable pain tolerance. Paired with his intelligence and purely sinister aura, Illumi can form strategies on the fly and even manipulate people to do his bidding. But, all this puts him on par or slightly ahead of his Zoldyck peers. What really sets Illumi apart is his absurdly sinister Nen, his calculatingly cold approach to everything, and his staggering intellect.

RELATED: The Most Iconic Anime Characters With Split Personality

Illumi's incredible control over Nen fits his Manipulation specialization. With his expertise in needles, Illumi can do all sorts of things. He can use Body Alteration to radically change the appearance of himself or others, but only Illumi is likely able to withstand the pain of this ability. Not only that, but he can also infuse commands into his needles and implant them into his target's brain to subconsciously manipulate them, as he did with Killua. And lastly, he can also use these command-infused Nen Needles to completely control anyone he sticks them in, turning them into, what Illumi calls 'Needle People'.

2 Chrollo Lucilfer

Phantom Troupe founder Chrollo Lucilfer is arguably the deadliest of all the Troupe's members, with his remarkable skillset also earning the praise of Hisoka himself. While his sheer physical power measures only seventh in the group, Chrollo makes up for his lack of robust strength with remarkable combat skills, masterful adaptability, and enhanced speed, combined with a genius-level intellect and preternatural perception.

Befitting his intelligence is his Specialist status. With his Nen, he can conjure his Specialist-type Bandit's Secret book to trigger his true ability, Skill Hunter. With this, Chrollo has to follow certain conditions to steal various abilities from other Nen users . It's a highly-technical Hatsu skill, but thanks to Chrollo's genius, it's one of the most fearsome in the series. And, as time has progressed, he's even innovated upon this ability even further with the Double Face ability, which essentially acts as a bookmark that lets Chrollo close the book but keep the stolen ability active, a loophole that lets him use two abilities at a time. This new advancement in Skill Hunter and a truly genius plan is how Chrollo managed to defeat and 'kill' Hisoka in Heaven's Arena , though him borrowing the abilities of both Shalnark and Kortopi did also unintentionally lead to their deaths.

1 Hisoka Marrow

Ah, finally it's Hisoka, one of the more polarizing characters in the franchise. He has some diehard fans out there, and people who absolutely despise him, but both groups will easily admit he’s one of anime's most interesting (and strongest) fighters. But, unlike Uvogin, Hisoka isn’t the strongest thanks to his raw physical strength (though it helps), it’s because he masterfully stacks a myriad of talents and utilizes them with perfect efficiency and creativity.

Whether it’s the hundreds of ways he uses his Bungee Gum Nen Aura, his Texture Surprise conjuration technique, his sleight-of-hand tricks, his brawn, his martial arts proficiency, or even just his lust for battle, Hisoka is a true monster that has only become more terrifying due to his now-seemingly-infinite Nen thanks to the Post-Mortem Nen pact that he revived himself with after his loss to Chrollo.

Phantom Troupe: The Guide of Hunter x Hunter

The Phantom Troupe is a world famous gang of thieves in the Hunter x Hunter series. Get to know more of this notorious gang and its members below!

What is Phantom Troupe (Gen'ei Ryodan)?

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe

The Phantom Troupe has a total of thirteen members who are all very skilled Nen users. The leader (Chrollo Lucilfer) and founding members (Feitan, Machi, Uvogin, Nobunaga, Franklin and Pakunoda) of the troupe all came from Meteor City, a junkyard city which is inhabited by outcasts who do not have any official records.

Each member has a numbered tattoo of a spider on their body which resembles the symbol of the Phantom Troupe. In the spider tattoos, there are numbers ranging from 1 to 13; it is still unknown how the members have been assigned with their numbers and only a few of them have revealed their tattoos.

They are known as the main antagonists during the Yorknew City arc as well as the secondary antagonists in the overall series of Hunter x Hunter .

Chrollo Lucilfer

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Chrollo Lucilfer

Chrollo is the leader of Phantom Troupe who originated from Meteor City. He formed the troupe along with six other residents in the city.

He is a Specialist type. His ability ‘Skill Hunter’ allows him to steal the abilities of other people and to use them as his own by using a conjured book known as ‘Bandit’s Secret’. The person who got their ability stolen would then no longer be able to use that ability.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Feitan

Feitan is one of the founding members of the troupe. He serves as the group’s interrogator and is shown to be proficient when it comes to torturing enemies.

He is a Transmutation type. Feitan’s ability ‘Rising Sun’ allows him to transmute his aura into scorching heat which burns his enemy to death.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Franklin

He is an Emission type and is the only known Emitter in the troupe. His ability ‘Double Machine Gun’ allows both of his hands to become shotguns.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Bonolenov

Bonolenov is a member who is covered in bandages. He is also a member of the Gyudondond tribe.

He is a Conjuration type. His ability allows him to conjure warrior gear and a giant sphere similar to the planet Jupiter.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Kortopi

Very little is known regarding Kortopi and how he was able to join the Phantom Troupe and when.

He is a Conjurer type. He has an ability that allows him to conjure a replica of the object which he touches with his left hand.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Machi

Machi is one of the founding members of the troupe and is considered as the physically strongest female member in the troupe.

She is a Transmuter type. She has the ability to create threads which could be lengthened without any limit. Machi uses her threads to sew open wounds or to capture and immobilize her enemies.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Pakunoda

Pakunoda is the former #9 member and one of the founding members of the troupe.

She is a Specialist type. Her ability allows her to read other people’s thoughts provided that she has physical contact with them.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Phinks

Phinks is also from Meteor City. He is second to Uvogin when it comes to the physical strength.

He is an Enhancement type. His ability ‘Ripper Cyclotron’ allows him to increase the strength of his punches.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Shalnark

Shalnark is troupe member #6. He is a licensed Hunter and is fond of electronics. He is also from Meteor City.

He is a Manipulation type. His ability ‘Black Voice’ allows him to control his opponents through his phone by placing an antenna on them.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Shizuku

Shizuku is the troupe member #8. She is also from Meteor City.

She is a Conjurer type. She has the ability to conjure a vacuum cleaner named Blinky which sucks in everything except for living things or objects made of Nen.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Uvogin

Uvogin is one of the founding members of the troupe and is the former Phantom Troupe member #11. He is also considered as the strongest fighter in the troupe in terms of physical strength.

He is an Enhancement type. His ability ‘Big Bang Impact’ allows him to enhance his punch, enough to cause an explosion.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Nobunaga

Nobunaga is one of the founding members of the troupe and is the Phantom Troupe member #1.

He is an Enhancer type. Little is known about his abilities and he is the only Phantom Troupe member who has not yet showed his Hatsu.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Hisoka

Hisoka is the former troupe member #4. However, it was revealed that he was a fake member and that he had used his Nen ability to imitate the Phantom Troupe’s spider tattoo.

He is a Transmutation type. His ‘Bungee Gum’ ability, which he named after his favorite gum when he was a kid, allows him to alter the consistency of his aura into a sticky substance which he uses on his offensive and defensive attacks. His ‘Texture Surprise’ allows him to apply his aura on a thin surface and change its appearance.

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Kalluto

Kalluto is the youngest in the Zoldyck family. He joins Phantom Troupe as the replacement of Hisoka and hopes to find Killua.

He is a Manipulation type. He mainly manipulates paper for his offensive and defensive attacks.

・Membership

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe

People who wish to join the troupe would only be accepted if they could kill a current member. If a current member were to leave the group or die, the leader would be responsible for looking for a replacement of that member.

・Coin Tossing

Hunter x Hunter - Phantom Troupe Coin Toss

It is prohibited to have serious fights among the troupe members. In an event where they have quarrels, they use the Coin Toss method to settle their differences. The coin is custom-made, the heads side has a design of the shape of the troupe’s signature twelve-legged spider symbol, while the tails side has a spider’s web design.

Biography [ ]

Founding days [ ].

Prior to the events of the series, Chrollo Lucilfer established the Phantom Troupe on Meteor City, a junkyard city inhabited by outcasts. People who live there do not exist on any official records, and the existence of the city is only known to a few people. Him, Feitan , Machi , Pakunoda , Uvogin , and Franklin are all founding members.

Actually, the founding Troupe members are a group of children doing dubbed voice-acting of films they found in the junkyard. They simply pick the name "Troupe" due to the group member's numbers and have no idea for a whole name. Soonafter, one of the casts named Sarasa went missing, causing Chrollo to postpone the next screening which was aired in a church in Meteor City. The Troupe found their fellow cast's dead body on a forest, mourning her death. Chrollo wanting to become a "villain" and redesign both city and himself, to keep away all the criminals who will use Meteor City and its residents for their crimes.

At some point in time, Silva Zoldyck killed the No. 8 of the Troupe and clashed with Chrollo.

Yorknew City Arc [ ]

The Phantom Troupe serve as the main antagonists of this arc, although they act partially as anti-villains as a significant part of their motivation is to protect their allies. Their initial goal is to attack the Yorknew City auction. However, after Kurapika kills Uvogin , they shift their focus to getting revenge on the one who killed Uvogin by wreaking havoc into Yorknew City and slaughtering the many members of the Mafia community. Chrollo fought Silva and Zeno Zoldyck in the Cemetery Building although they stopped after realizing that he hired Illumi , Kalluto , and Maha Zoldyck to assassinate the Ten Dons of the Mafia community (the Ten Dons also hired Silva and Zeno to assassinate Chrollo).

Gon criticizes them of hypocrisy as they care deeply about each other, but mercilessly murder innocent people. Eventually, they discovered that Kurapika killed Uvogin and went after him, but captured Gon and Killua instead. Pakunoda read their memories and discovered Kurapika's weakness, but Kurapika immediately captured Chrollo and threatened to kill him if Pakunoda spoke of Gon's or Killua's memories. A hostage exchange was set up to trade Gon and Killua for Chrollo. During the exchange, Kurapika put a blade on Chrollo's heart, preventing him from using his Nen and/or contacting the other Phantom Troupe members. He also put a blade on Pakunoda's heart, requiring her to return Gon and Killua by midnight unharm and without deception and preventing her from revealing anything about Kurapika. At the end of the arc, Pakunoda sacrificed herself by using her Nen ability to reveal Kurapika's powers to the other members.

Greed Island Arc [ ]

Phinks and Feitan met Gon and Killua on the auction, they attempted to flee although the two easily pursued them. Phinks explained to them that they have no intentions to harm them and are unable to kill Kurapika as his death will render him to bemore powerful. At the same time, he explains Pakunoda's death and she was thankful to them before they left. After attending the Southernpiece Auction, the two stole a copy of the game Greed Island and bring it back to their hideout. At the same time, A few of the members decided to enter the game and suspected that Chrollo was there to look for an exorcist to remove Kurapika's Nen. Instead, they found Hisoka , who ended up finding a Nen Exorcist whom he hired to heal Chrollo. At the same time, Kalluto became the new replacement to Hisoka.

Chimera Ant Arc [ ]

Feitan, Phinks, Shizuku, Bonolenov, Shalnark, and Kalluto went to Meteor City to defeat the Chimera Ants who have taken over and enslaved several Meteor City residents. Feitan then defeated Zazan , the one responsible for the Chimera Ants invasion to their hometown.

Succession Contest Arc [ ]

Chrollo, whose Nen curse had been exorcised, and Hisoka fought to the death in Heaven's Arena. It appeared that Chrollo had killed Hisoka. However, Hisoka survived and vowed to kill all of the members of the Phantom Troupe. He immediately killed Shalnark and Kortopi. The other members tried to find him and suspected he was hiding on the ship taking everyone to the Dark Continent. Hisoka wanted to be pursued and hired Illumi to join the Phantom Troupe and help try to kill him.

Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge [ ]

In the non-canon movie Phantom Rouge , Omokage manipulated the corpses of Uvogin, Pakunoda, and the Shadow Beasts to attack Nobunaga and Machi, only for Nobunaga to quickly dispose of them. The Troupe wanted to settle scores with Omokage due to reviving Uvogin and Pakunoda as puppets bent to his will.

Sense of Morality [ ]

The members of the Phantom Troupe will slaughter anyone without hesitation. However all of them (except for Hisoka) care deeply about each other. Gon asked both Nabunaga and Chrollo about this, and neither gave a clear explanation. Feitan and Phinks decided not to kill Gon and Killua when they discovered that they refused to kill Pakunoda when they had the chance to do so.

It is stated that they sometimes do "philanthropic work", though the nature of this is unclear. They seem to regularly help Meteor City, as is seen in the Chimera Ant Arc.

In both cases, these include superhuman strength (Uvogin/ Kyokotsu ), proficient swordsmanship (Nobunaga Hazama/ Bankotsu ), built-in guns (Franklin/ Ginkotsu ) and healing abilities (Machi/ Suikotsu ). Coincidentally, both Uvogin and Kyokotsu are the first members of their respective groups to be defeated and killed.
  • Members of the Phantom Troupe usually rank quite high in character popularity polls. Many of them come within the top twenty or thirty characters, according to the second character popularity poll and third character popularity poll respectively.

Screen Rant

Hunter x hunter: the 10 strongest members of the phantom troupe, ranked.

From Chrollo to Kalluto, Hunter x Hunter's Phantom Troupe members are all extremely dangerous opponents. But which Spider has the strongest bite?

The Phantom Troupe is Hunter x Hunter 's terrifying and tight-knit group of criminals, infamous for their many successful heists and staggering body count. Led by Chrollo Lucilfer, the original members all come from Meteor City, but the lineup has changed over the years.

Related: The Main Characters of Yu Yu Hakusho Ranked From Best to Worst

The Troupe values versatility and efficiency, prizing nonlethal Nen abilities such as Kortopi's or Pakunoda's higher than even some of the Troupe's most destructive Hatsus. However, combat is still a large part of the Phantom Troupe, and though every Spider is likely stronger than a large majority of the population, some members of the Troupe present more of a threat than others.

Despite being one of the strongest Nen users in Hunter x Hunter , Hisoka lands at the bottom of the list due to the contentious nature of his membership. His Spider tattoo is infamously fake, and he doesn't participate at all in the mission in Yorknew, instead going out of his way to subvert their efforts. Considering how important loyalty is to the Troupe, his fickle commitment makes his membership questionable at best. This is unsurprising, as Hisoka often leaves Hunter x Hunter fans with more questions than answers .

However, Hisoka had already proven himself to be terrifyingly powerful opponent far before the Spiders' introduction. With his Nen mastery, superhuman physical abilities, and incredible intelligence, Hisoka is quite often the biggest threat in the room, especially considering his blood lust and lack of morals.

The youngest member of the Zoldyck family and the Phantom Troupe, Kalluto's deceptively fragile appearance belies his ability to tear people to pieces. Though he believes he's the weakest Spider, he's mastered some Nen techniques, developed his own Hatsu, and is able to spy on other members of the Troupe without being detected, all of which is incredibly impressive considering that he's 10 years old.

While his attacks initially seem like a graceful dance of fan and confetti, Kalluto's movements distract from how his paper is strong enough to cut through steel and sharp enough to sever limbs. While Kalluto is physically weaker and has had a lot less experience than the others, he's proven himself to be worthy of their ranks.

Though Shizuku's unique Nen ability has made her the designated "clean-up crew" for the Troupe, that doesn't make her any less dangerous.  She's also one of the most intelligent members of the Troupe, capable of quick strategy and analysis, which helps her close any gap in strength between herself and her opponents.

Related: Cowboy Bebop's Faye Valentine and 8 Other Badass Female Assassins in TV Shows

Shizuku's Nen ability, a conjured vacuum she calls "Blinky," might seem ridiculous, but its ability to inhale any nonliving object makes it an invaluable asset to the Troupe. While it's most useful outside of combat, Shizuku is able to wield Blinky as a gruesome weapon, leading to one of the most painful deaths inflicted by any of the Spiders. After inflicting precise bleeding wounds, Shizuku can then use Blinky to exsanguinate opponents, proving that a strong vacuum can be just as deadly as a sword.

Bonolenov is one of the most unusual characters in the series, sporting his tribe's traditional body modifications (holes pierced throughout his entire body) underneath his bandages. With his combat style revolving around the music he creates with his body, Bonolenov fights like a dancer, gracefully dodging attacks and tiring out opponents. He also uses sound to disarm and disorient, and it plays a key feature in his Nen ability.

Bonolenov's Nen ability uses music as the focus for his conjuration, with the effects depending on the song he plays. He can use this to create weapons and armor for himself, or to summon much larger projectiles. Notably, Bonolenov uses his song to create what seems like an imitation of the planet Jupiter, which is able to throw at the speed of light to crush his foes.

Nobunaga is a founding member of the Phantom Troupe, formerly fighting alongside Uvogin. A master swordsman, Nobunaga has a powerful and frightening aura that he's able to extend out so he can tell the instant someone enters his range, using his advanced perception and speed to strike immediately.

Related: The 10 Best Anime Like Cowboy Bebop

While Nobunaga has yet to be seen in genuine combat and his Nen ability remains unknown, Chrollo has designated him as part of the Troupe's attack unit. With this role, he's tasked with protecting the "lifelines" of the group, i.e., those, such as Shizuku, with abilities essential to their operations.  Considering Chrollo's confidence in his combat skills, when Nobunaga finally reveals his abilities, it's bound to be impressive.

Although he was the first Spider to die, Uvogin's tragic end left a mark of sadness on Hunter x Hunter . Showcasing not only incredible physical strength but indomitable endurance and loyalty, Uvogin was the first example of the terrifying might of the Phantom Troupe. Uvogin (literally) embodied what it meant to be an Enhancer, using Nen to improve his physical form to the point where his entire body could be weaponized and his skin acted as a near-impenetrable shield.

Uvogin's true strength rested in his unflinching determination and spirit. He withstood torture, poison, and infestation with leeches all while fighting with the same power as before. In fact, what really killed Uvogin was his relentless drive to defend his fellow Spiders, remaining unbreakable until the very end.

Machi is the first real Spider introduced in Hunter x Hunter , and her Nen Stitches definitely set the bar for the rest of the Troupe. Winning Hisoka's approval and selected as a guard for two of the most important Spiders, it's clear that Machi's peers regard her as capable and powerful. She excels at stealth and is extremely physically resistant, but her real skill is the versatility of her Nen.

Related: 10 Strongest Nen Users in Hunter x Hunter

With her Nen Threads, Machi can heal extreme wounds in moments, track people across long distances, and manipulate physical bodies. She has proven herself to be adept at using her thread offensively, strangling or slicing at enemies as well as creating traps and restraints. In Yorknew, she is able to puppeteer several bodies at once, not only using them as human shields or weapons.

The Troupe's master torturer, Feitan is a Conjurer who won the title of acting leader while Chrollo was gone. Despite being mostly standoffish and unassuming, Feitan has proven himself to be one of the strongest members. He is able to instantly decapitate multiple mafia guards barehanded and consistently dodge and parry Zazan's attacks, at one point moving so quickly he becomes imperceptible, despite "not being at his best."

Feitan does not often use his incredibly powerful Nen ability in Hunter x Hunter , capable of being a vicious opponent with his hands or sword. Feitan's Rising Sun unleashes what seems to be a literal imitation of the sun, which superheats the area around him before exploding. The only time it's been used so far is plenty devastating, and Feitan makes it clear that it is capable of being much, much worse.

Despite joining the Troupe only at Hisoka's request, Illumi is, unlike his partner, actually inducted as a legitimate member, taking a spot alongside his brother, Kalluto, as the new 11th Spider. Using his needles as conduits, Illumi masters the whole range of Manipulator abilities at his leisure. He's capable of changing his own appearance, puppeteering both living and dead bodies, and mind control.

Illumi is powerful enough that Hisoka considers him a worthwhile ally and genuine threat, ranking his strength over that of the Zodiacs, the top-tier of hunters in the Hunter x Hunter universe . Seeing as he has yet to be in a situation where he seems even remotely concerned, it's fair to say that fans have yet to see Illumi's real power level.

Unsurprisingly, the Phantom Troupe's enigmatic leader has more than earned his place as the head of the Spider. Chrollo is, without a doubt, one of the strongest characters in all of Hunter x Hunter,  a fact that is proven again and again. He is recognized as dangerous by the two oldest Zoldycks,  and Zeno even believes that Chrollo, if he had been actually trying during their fight, may have been able to kill him.

When Chrollo and Hisoka finally battle, Chrollo unleashes the full array of his abilities to devastating effect. The fight is challenging on both sides, but Chrollo accomplishes what no one else in Hunter x Hunter has: defeating Hisoka Morow. His incredible precision, intelligence, speed, and strength combined with his mastery over Nen and the abilities he's copied with Skill Thief make him an opponent unlike anyone else.

Phantom Troupe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phantom_troupe_anime.png

some caption text --> "We reject no one, so take nothing from us." — Meteor City's mantra

Introduced as "the most horrible group of criminals in all history", they are a group of 13 thieves who specialize in very difficult targets. Unlike most other thieves, they generally don't rely on subtle strategy or minuted actions; perpetually reenacting the Gordian Knot parable, they prefer to resort to brute force. Loads and loads of brute force. Which is why they get such a reputation: They are less famous for what they steal than for the hundreds of people they kill in the process. In fact, as they already steal all the common objects they need on a daily basis, they have very little interest in the luxury items they target, and seem to choose them mostly because they know these items will be heavily guarded. Indeed, most of the members seem to be in specifically for the carnage.

They have a peculiar organization, being villainous True Companions of Ubermenschen (this doesn't go without the occasional internal frictions, though they have strict rules about settling those), and while they have a leader, the survival of individual members (including the leader) is not a priority; the survival of the group as the whole is. If a member dies, they simply get replaced.

Several of the members come from Meteor City, officially a gigantic landfill, less officially an autonomous city inhabited by millions of Unpersons , even less officially a Mafia-subsidized breeding-ground for anonymous hitmen.

The group is often referred to as "The Spider", because of the 12-legged spider tattoos that mark their membership.     open/close all folders

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phantom_troupe_spider.png

  • 13 Is Unlucky : To the public, they're so strong that the entire Mafia is powerless against them and they had to call in the strongest characters known to the readers at the time to put them down. On the flipside they're Unperson inhabitants of a city-sized garbage dump, two (and later on, another two) of their members have died, their leader is Brought Down to Normal and they're at the mercy of a boy half some of the members' age.
  • Affably Evil : Many of the members can be genuinely amicable and reasonable if the situation calls for it, despite otherwise being ruthless murderers. This can make dealing with them somewhat frustrating for some characters, most notably Gon, who has a very strong hatred for people who have an understanding of morality, comradery and human decency despite seemingly being sociopathic savages, viewing such people as hypocrites.
  • Affectionate Nickname : Shar, Fei, Bono, Uvo, Paku.
  • Alas, Poor Villain : The deaths of several of their members are played up quite tragically, right down to the surviving members mourning the deaths of their True Companions which contrasts their otherwise amoral nihilism.
  • Animal-Motif Team : Membership in the group is denoted by a spider tattoo and they're often called "The Spiders" or the like when referred to.
  • Anti-Villain : Ruthless and utterly monstrous as their crimes may be, the reason why they're like that is to protect their home of Meteor City from raiders and criminals, by creating the image of an evil organization so feared that no one would try to touch it. They're also characterized by their deep sense of camaraderie towards one-another, and are fully willing to perform humane actions if they see it as the honourable decision.
  • Ape Shall Never Kill Ape : While they don't necessarily hold themselves as being morally superior, they place zero value on the lives of outsiders, hypocritically place value on each other's lives to varying degrees, and are forbidden to seriously attack one another. This could also be applied on a larger scale to Meteor City itself. In short, Spider shall never kill a fellow Spider, but Hisoka would be the exception to this.
  • Arch-Enemy : Towards Kurapika and much later Hisoka. In both cases, It's Personal , because Kurapika and Hisoka are both responsible for the deaths of several of their members.
  • Badass Crew : To the bone. Each member displays various skills that make them worthy threats to the heroes and Kurapika.
  • Being Watched : No matter how good the watcher is, the members of the Phantom Troupe all possess the innate ability to sense when when they are being watched.
  • Berserk Button : Harming the members of their group (especially the founding members) and attacking Meteor City. The reason is they were Childhood Friends who founded the group (originally just to dub salvaged episodes of a Super Sentai show) and committed many acts of evil to protect the Meteor City from outsiders after what happened to Sarasa (a childhood friend) who was mercillessly killed and dismembered by raiders just for the For the Evulz . That's why they took it as personal offense when the Chimera ants attacked the city as it would be insulting to their goal in the first place.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy : Of a sort. While individually, the members of the Phantom Troupe are very strong for nen users and as a group together, they are unstoppable, they only ever seemed concerned with stealing things. In most cases this means they only ever usually go up against your standard mook criminals or red-shirt police/peacekeeping force. This means that while they have plenty of experience with their powers and how to use them, they don't often have to engage a legitimate threat. The few instances where a Troupe member was challenged, hurt, or even killed, they were up against a serious opponent or someone who prepared for them. In both instances of Troupe members dying, the Troupe members in question barely did any real damage or put up much of a fight to their opponent. This goes even further in later chapters after the Phantom troupe is introduced with nen users appearing with comparable strength or possibly greater power which means that while each member of the Phantom Troupe is strong, they aren't the strongest in the world and there are in fact many other nen users who could match them in combat. The contrast is even greater when members of the troupe are compared to Hisoka (someone who goes out and actively picks fights with people who can hurt or even kill him), a former member who is now actively hunting them. Both Shalnark and Kortopi die in seconds (Granted, the fact that Hisoka had surprise on his side and that they were currently without their signature powers meant they didn't even get the chance to defend themselves).
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday : They honestly don't hold a grudge against the Kurta clan. It was just another killing for them.
  • Card-Carrying Villain : They make little effort to hide their identity, because they really don't need to . And then it is revealed that they are invoking this trope for a good reason.
  • Criminal Found Family : While they have Lack of Empathy for everyone else, they do care for each other and are deeply upset when one of their own dies. It is pointed out by Gon as serious Moral Myopia , but seeing as they're all Übermensch who think and function differently from society, it doesn't phase them as much. The Troupe was founded in Meteor City, a place where everyone abandons things they don't want—including people. They chose to join up and work together as one piece of a greater group of thieves that is more important than any of the individual members, but that doesn't mean they didn't slip into prioritizing each other fiercely, especially the founding members.
  • Dark Action Girl : Machi, Shizuku, and Pakunoda are the female members of the fierce criminal organization.
  • The Dreaded : The group are among the most feared thieves in the world. Given their impressive nen abilities and casual response to murder , it is understandable. It is later revealed that they are invoking this trope to protect Meteor City from outsiders after what happened to their friend Sarasa who was killed by the raiders.
  • Dwindling Party : Subverted ; despite the relatively high fatality rate that comes with being a Phantom Troupe member, due to the group's philosophy of no one leg being greater than the body, they're actually really efficient with replacing deceased or AWOL members.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones : Deconstruction ; The Troupe, while completely merciless and uncaring of the effects of their wanton slaughter seem to care for one another, deeply mourning the loss of their friends and "family". Gon rightfully points out, however, that they have absolutely no moral justification for acting this way, and that if they realize what it is like to lose a family member, why are they so uncaring for the senselessly large amount of lives that they take? It is important to know that none of them give Gon a concrete answer, which implies that they know of this moral contradiction but are too scared to answer it and would rather just ignore it.
  • Evil Virtues : Even the ones who otherwise seem like sociopaths are selflessly loyal to the Spider and/or Chrollo. This serves to make them less sympathetic rather than more, due to heavy Moral Myopia on their behalf.
  • Faking the Dead : All of them thanks to Kortopi's ability.

phantom troupe list

  • From Nobody to Nightmare : The group and most of its membership originated from Meteor City, which is basically a giant garbage dump existing in a legal and political limbo where unwanted things (and people) are dumped from all over the world, meaning that everyone living there is an Un-person . Then they became the most feared criminals in the world.
  • Genius Bruiser : Everyone of them has high physical strength and all members are also intelligent. Even the ones who don't look smart at all: case in point, Uvogin is a deadly Combat Pragmatist , and Franklin is a fairly logical person outside of combat.
  • Combat Specialists: While each of the group is clearly a capable fighter on their own, some members like Feitan, Phinks, Nobunaga, and Uvogin are excellent close-range combatants. This makes them key for defending the group as a whole from powerful Nen users, or individuals like the Holy Beasts.
  • Support Specialists: Machi, Shizuku and Kortopi have poor combat performance in comparison to the rest of the group, but make up for it with their healing abilities, storage capabilities, and object-copying capabilities respectively
  • Crowd Control Specialists: Individuals such as Franklin and Bonolenov have Hatsu that make them best for causing wide disruption and keeping crowds of opponents down at a time.
  • Intel Specialists: Pakunoda, Shalnark, and Chrollo himself are used to gather information about the situation the thieves find themselves in, and use their Nen to aid the rest of the group. Pakunoda herself is especially useful in this regard, as her Memory Bomb allows her to communicate complicated facts to her allies with ease.
  • Heads or Tails? : Most if not all in-group disputes, no matter how small, are solved with a simple coin toss. This prevents the dispute from growing into something that could potentially cause a falling out.
  • Hidden Depths : Despite being entirely in a position of power for the Yorknew City arc, they show mercy towards Gon and Killua several times, and Phinks and Feitan spare the duo when they bump into them during the auction. This is most likely because the two never posed an immediate threat, the troupe respects them for their tenacity, and that Phinks was thankful for the two showing Pakunoda kindness despite her despicable attitude.
  • Invincible Villains : They're damn near unstoppable killing machines! Throughout the York Shin arc almost no one, save for Kurapika, Silva, and Zeno, is capable of killing or even hurting them.
  • They place zero value on the lives of others and have no problem murdering basically anyone, but kill one member of their group and they'll go absolutely ballistic. Gon calls them out on this.
  • In the Phantom Rouge movie, they're disgusted that Omokage would dare to steal Uvogin's eyes to recreate him as a puppet. The irony is completely lost on them.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond : While the Troupe members are legitimately strong, they mostly only ever fight normal people or lower level nen users. As the series goes on and more nen users are introduced, it's clear that their reputation comes mostly from the fact that as a group they are almost unstoppable but individually they're not exceptional (barring Chrollo) and just well trained and experienced nen users. When they do fight people who are a real threat they are often cornered, injured, and few members have been killed.
  • One-Man Army : All of them are master Nen users with unique or extraordinary abilities. Any one of them can take out armies of normal humans or even a large group of powerful underworld Nen users.
  • Only One Name : Subverted. At least for the still-living members of the Troupe, everyone who only had their first name used in conversation has their last name formally revealed in Chapter 377 when the author finally decided on what surnames to bestow them.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil : While the Troupe are a ruthless band of mass murderers, the Chimera Ants specifically Zazans squadron are probably their least sympathetic of their many victims. They are shown to be exceptionally sadistic toward the humans they hunted and killed, among their many victims were fan favorites Pokkle and Ponzu , turning the citizens of Meteor City into their personal slaves by mutating them into horrific abominations. All this makes it easier to root for the Spiders.
  • Pet the Dog : Despite their ruthlessness and the fact that they Would Hurt a Child , the Troupe actually takes relatively good care of Gon and Killua when they're initially captured, with Nobunaga even wanting them to join the Troupe altogether. Ultimately, at the end of the Yorknew Arc, they're actually touched by how Gon and Killua treated Pakunoda and decide to leave them alone.
  • Phantom Thief : Downplayed. They have a few characteristics of the trope (a set of rules and ideals, stealing for the sake of stealing rather than a need, sometimes leaving calling cards , etc.), and the name certainly fits, but for the most part they're more like a gang of psychotic terrorists and they carry out their schemes with all the subtlety and class of a brick to the face.
  • Further complicating manners is Hisoka's subtext-laden fixation on Chrollo and his powers.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad : Deconstructed horribly. Despite most of them having wacky designs and personalities, they demonstrate how horribly dangerous a group like this could actually be in real life, as a single one of them is capable of brutally murdering hundreds of people. Also, unlike most examples, they function as essentially equals among each other making them more like Quirky Dragon Squad. Chrollo actually respects them instead of killing them if they're not immediately useful, which makes sense since a Bad Boss is a horrible model to utilise when trying keep your associates loyal to you.
  • Rule #1 : Serious quarrels between members are prohibited and must be settled by flipping a coin (they even have special coins with a spider printed on them, just for this situation).
  • Rule of Symbolism : Spiders and inverted crosses as recurring motifs.
  • Sliding Scale of Libertarianism and Authoritarianism : Heavily discussed, as the paradox of the Troupe is how a bunch of extremely individualist Übermenschen who completely ignore the laws, morals and conventions of society and who only care about themselves and each other are nonetheless brought together to cooperate in total submission to a collective, hierarchic entity.
  • Specifically Numbered Group : In Hunter × Hunter , the Phantom Troupe is always meant to have 13 members—absolutely no more, and any new members are either selected by the leader or earn their place by defeating one of the members. They each have their number tattooed on them.
  • Straw Nihilist : Along with Social Darwinist . They act like they adhere to these principles, but don't actually bother to put much philosophical justification behind these acts (the leader outright states that he never really thought about his own motive).
  • Undying Loyalty : All of its members ( except Hisoka ) are loyal to the group. However this loyalty varies as some, like Phinks and Feitan are loyal to the Spider as an organization, while Pakunoda and Machi are loyal to Chrollo. This conflict of to whom be loyal to nearly led to a fight.
  • Unperson : Those who come from Meteor City, at least.
  • Unseen No More : Kurapika mentioned them a lot during the Hunter Exam and Zoldyck arcs before finally showing up during the Yorknew arc (with Machi appearing during the end of the Heaven's Arena arc).
  • Villain of Another Story : They become relegated to the B-plot of the Greed Island arc.
  • A member of the Troupe was killed by Killua's father Silva. While Zeno stated that it wasn't easy he didn't seem injured or that he even put up above moderate effort into the kill. Further, while he did tell the rest of his family to stay away from the Phantom Troupe, it's implied that this is almost certainly because their leader Chrollo will come after you.
  • Nobunaga can extend his En to about 2 meters, but Biscuit stated that a true master could extend it to 10 meters. Zeno can extend his to 100 meters.
  • Uvogin was very powerful and he did kill a bunch of the Shadow Beasts (the strongest nen users in the world of mafia), but one of them did inflict a paralyzing poison on him and it was confirmed that he could also secrete a powerfully lethal poison with his nen. If he had been trying to kill Uvogin, Uvo would have died. Further, he barely did any damage to Kurapika when they fought (what damage he did was healed easily). Although Kurapika is basically kryptonite for the Phantom Troupe members and Chrollo said that Uvogin would be weak against a conjurer (like Kurapika). This often seems to be a trend as the Troupe member seems so used to handing out a Curb-Stomp Battle that they genuinely think that a threat capable of taking them out will never come along.
  • When Feitan fought the chimera ant queen in Meteor City, he couldn't do any real damage even before she increased her power with her upgraded form. He won only because his nen ability has a wide range of effect and has the potential to do ridiculous amounts of damage (he essentially creates a miniature sun that fries everything around). Keep in mind that this chimera ant queen was a novice at using her nen, didn't master her aura or condition herself to reflexively use the basics of nen while she fought (essentially, she was matching Feitan with nothing more than her natural strength and toughness ) when he underestimated her toughness and left himself defenseless from her aura (he had focused all of his aura into the tip of his sword to pierce through her neck, meaning he has no aura over the rest of his body to defend himself) she did massive damage with nothing more than a reflexive burst of aura. Feitan won that fight through sheer luck as A) if the queen had conditioned herself to enhance herself with her aura instinctively on top of her monstrous natural power, Feitan wouldn't have been able to keep up with her at all B) If she had more or at least more proficient use of her aura and more experience using nen, she could have killed Feitan outright with one shot while he was offguard and his aura wasn't protecting his body C) Feitan still had no way of actually hurting her and if he didn't have an Instant Death ability, she would have beaten him regardless of her inexperience.
  • Nobunaga repeatedly threatens to kill them, and slams Gon's hand even as it bruises and bleeds during an arm-wrestling match.
  • Feitan grabs Gon's arm from behind and would have most likely broken it (or rather, would have started with peeling off a nail as form of torture), had he not lost a coin match of heads-or-tails with Nobunaga.
  • In addition to being responsible for the Kurta clan's massacre, one of the victims was a boy named Pairo, Kurapika's childhood friend.

Founding Members

Chrollo lucilfer, voiced by: mamoru miyano (2011 series), yoshikazu nagano (1999 series) (japanese), robbie daymond (2011 series), richard meen (1999 series) (english).

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_chrollo.jpg

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade : His Benz Knife is sharp enough to cut Silva's body. And its poison is so potent that just 0.1 mg can paralyze a whale .
  • Affably Evil : He's a rather polite and soft-spoken guy, even to people who are currently trying to kill him.
  • The Antichrist : He was a forsaken child, is a deceptively benevolent leader who causes unbelievable amounts of strife and destruction, has a nihilistic view of everything, carries around a book with him like a Bible, is very hard to kill and able to dodge a karmic hand of death even when it looks like he won't, and possesses a selection of powers far beyond those of anyone else. And then there's his name, which is an obvious corruption of Lucifer. As in an angel of light that was once a decent being, but is now corrupted and pure evil on the inside.
  • To Kurapika. After the Yorknew City arc, it becomes very mutual.
  • Hisoka has cemented himself as another contender for arch enemy after murdering Kortopi and Shalnark, and promising to hunt the Spiders down, one by one .
  • Arc Villain : Of the Yorknew City arc.
  • Art Evolution : When Chrollo returned to the manga, his design was noticeably different, more feminine. He became less muscular and more slender, softer rounder facial features, shorter jaw, less prominent cheekbones, thinner fingers, and looked much younger
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership : The uncontested leader of a gang of Persons Of Mass Destruction .
  • Awesomeness by Analysis : One of his defining traits which is shown during his battle with Zeno and Silva.
  • Badass Bookworm : He likes reading a lot, especially ancient books. Also, his ability has the shape of a book.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit : Battles Zeno and Silva in Yorknew while clad in a suit. Clothing Damage ensues due to the two consistently using aggressive Nen attacks.
  • Badass in Distress : He got kidnapped by Kurapika which is not a insult to Chrollo.
  • Benevolent Boss : An evil one, but nonetheless he still qualifies. He may not care about the lives of innocent people (or anyone outside of his group), but he's genuinely friends with all of the members and they all follow him willingly. It's to the point some members willing give their nen abilities to him when he requires them for certain tasks, and he's willing to return them when needed as well.
  • Big Bad : Of the Yorknew City arc, but he's mainly Kurapika's main enemy for the series.
  • Blood Knight : While not showing it he definitely has shades of this, his fight with Hisoka being a clear example.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality : When asked by Gon why the Troupe can so casually kill people who have nothing to do with them, Chrollo is genuinely confounded and goes into deep thought, as if he had never contemplated his rationale for committing mass murder up until this point. He even ponders that perhaps the answer to this question is the key to understanding himself, but he comes up blank.
  • Broken Ace : Far and away the most dangerous member of the Phantom Troupe. His immense intellect combined with his amazingly flexible Nen abilities makes him an incredibly tough opponent to have to face in a serious battle, as he can and will use everything in his arsenal to construct elaborate battle scenarios which leave no openings for his opponents to exploit ( as if trapping them in a spider's web ). Besides his fighting skills, he's also very charismatic and a natural-born leader, and no member of the Troupe questions his authority. He is strong, cool, smart and charismatic but he is also a ruthless killer. An assassin even said he is addicted to murder.
  • Brought Down to Normal : After Kurapika seals his nen. It doesn't last long.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You : He can only keep the powers he's stolen if the person he stole the power from is still alive. Because of this, when he comes across a person with a desirable power, he never fights them to kill, and won't let any of the other troupe members kill them, either. However, later after Taking a Level in Badass he finds out that some of his abilities could be an exception to this rule as one of his abilities stays even after the owner dies. Chrollo surmises that depending on the ability and person he stole it from, the ability itself could become an example of nen becoming stronger after death. He also learns that if he uses an ability he stole which has become stronger after the death of the user is activated and used, the ability won't disappear even if the page it comes from is closed. This is only maintained until the ability is used/activated but this is useful as if such an ability as used in conjunction with another ability, the other ability also won't disappear because of the permanence of the first ability, which allows Chrollo to use even more than the two his new ability "double-face" allows.
  • The Collector : He collects nen abilities.
  • Combat Pragmatist : Using the referee and even the public as weapons to fight Hisoka.
  • Combo Platter Powers : With his Double Face, he is able to use his abilities this way. If Chrollo uses the a Nen ability in his book that doesn't disappear after the original owner's death, then that ability can be used with the another which also won't go away even if its page is closed. This is an example of the ability of Nen to grow stronger after death (some of Chrollo's powers remain after the original user dies but this is limited specifically to abilities that become stronger after death) and won't vanish until after it's used/activated. Going further is that a Nen-empowered by death ability itself can be used to continue a different ability even if both pages are closed because death-empowered Nen persists and keeps the other ability it's combined with from disappearing
  • Creepy Crosses : He's a major Arc Villain with an Antichrist motif, a stylized cross tattooed on his forehead, and a trench coat with cross emblems on the buttons.
  • Diabolical Mastermind : By leading a group of infamous criminals.
  • Dissonant Serenity : Which freaks out Melody to the point of causing her a brief Heroic BSoD as he was not afraid of dying not even a little.
  • Explaining Your Power to the Enemy : Explains his abilities and his strategy to Hisoka, claiming that he will win for sure. This turns out to be part of his combat strategy—telling Hisoka ahead of time that several of Chrollo's powers amount to a One-Hit Kill forces Hisoka to fight more cautiously than usual, which gives Chrollo time to assemble a small army around him and overwhelm him by attrition.
  • Expy : His visual design resembles Shinobu Sensui from YuYu Hakusho , a manga also created by Yoshihiro Togashi . Personality-wise they're not that similar besides being dangerous, mentally disturbed geniuses, though they both share a Fallen Angel motif.
  • Facial Markings : Two of his distinguishing features are his cross-shaped tattoo on his forehead.
  • A Father to His Men : Despite claiming that the lives of individual members (including his own) are not as important as the group as a whole, he is visibly distraught whenever a member dies.
  • Foil : To Kurapika. Both are calm, ruthless, Specialist type nen users, but Chrollo is a sociopathic murderer while Kurapika has a strong moral code over all.
  • Having a Blast : His ability Sun and Moon that allows him to turn anything into bombs, including people.
  • Hit-and-Run Tactics : Part of his strategy against Hisoka. Using his crowd of puppets for support.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed : Chrollo will intentionally hold back in a fight if he's trying to steal the opponent's ability . Even Zeno's doubts that he could win if Chrollo had intentions of killing him.
  • Image Song : "1\\13".
  • Impossible Thief : Skill Hunter allows him to steal abilities.
  • Improbable Weapon User : So far, he fought with a book and a cape and he managed to easily beat some opponents using nothing but ordinary ballpoint pens .
  • It Amused Me : Chrollo's motivations are particularly difficult to define; when asked about them, he outright states that he doesn't know and never really thought about it, he just does what he does because he can; he's reluctant to fight at full capacity even when he could or should, he gets the Phantom Troupe to steal impossibly well-protected objects only to get bored with them and sell them (even though he doesn't need the money), and sometimes steal them again later. And he wouldn't care if he were to die the next day.
  • It's Personal : With Hisoka. As of the events since the fight between Chrollo and Hisoka at the Heaven's Arena, Hisoka has become the man Chrollo hates the most as after their duel Hisoka killed both Shalnark and Kortopi in retaliation for his defeat at Chollo's hands. While Chrollo also has it in for Kurapika for killing another member of the Phantom Troupe, Uvogin, Kurapika is simply a target for revenge while Chrollo is actively obsessed with finding and killing Hisoka.
  • The Leader : Of the Phantom Troupe. Easily indicated by the fact his troupe mates all can him "Leader" instead of his name. Originally, he elected to have Uvogin to be the leader but the former instead made him to be the boss instead.
  • Logical Weakness : Since he requires his book to use abilities, this means that he can only use one hand to fight since the other has to hold the book. After gaining a new ability, called Double Face, he now can use both hands to fight, while still being capable of using the abilities.
  • Manly Tears : After confirming Uvogin's death, tears began falling from his eyes without him even realizing it. This is especially jarring and strange if you take into account that Nobunaga reacted the very same way .
  • Meaningful Name : Chrollo comes from the verb crollare , which in Italian means "to collapse" ( crollo means "I collapse"). Take one letter out of his last name and it's obvious what that name means.
  • Moral Myopia : A theme of the series as a whole, but one that especially applies to him. He's perfectly fine with the murder of countless innocent bystanders but would sacrifice the entire world to protect his own team.
  • After his deathmatch with Hisoka, his failure to return Shalnark and Kortopi's abilities leave them sitting ducks against Hisoka when he decides to openly go to war against the entire troupe, killing both of them effortlessly. To be fair, though, Hisoka was considered to be dead by everyone after the fight, only having come back to life because of his exploitation of nen empowerment after death.
  • Chrollo was the one who actually gave Hisoka the idea of "nen becoming stronger after you die." Had he not bothered to explain his abilities, Hisoka would not have thought to try to make a last-second contract with his Nen to come back to life.
  • Non-Standard Character Design : He's drawn much more realistically than most other characters in the series.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket : His default attire is a large coat and no shirt underneath.
  • People Puppets : After taking Shalnark's ability he can now control people as well. By using his Sun and Moon symbols he can even turn them into living explosives. He also has the ability named Order Stamp that allows him to control corpses too .
  • Personality Powers : The final straw that pushed Chrollo to become what he is today is a note that was found with their kidnapped friend's dismembered body (that until this day is just known to him) . His power is a notebook that can steal Nen.
  • Power Parasite : Specifically, a Power Sponge - stealing abilities is his only power; the victim loses their special ability and are limited to being able to only use the basics of nen (as nen users can only create a few special techniques with their nen, it's unlikely that the target can create another nen technique). Chrollo has a tougher time than most to obtain these powers, as he needs to meet the person whose powers he's going to steal; Chrollo needs to hear the name of the power from said person and see it performed, so he can summon his book and transfer that power into it. Completing the transfer within 1 hour is essential, otherwise, his enemies will become immune to it. In addition, he needs to hold the book out in order to use these powers, leaving him open for an attack, but Chrollo's collected a number of powers from fighters stronger than him to compensate.
  • Pretty in Mink : He is usually seen wearing a fur-collared leather and fur trench coat that is unbuttoned, revealing his muscular body, the coat is imprinted with the golden St. Peter's Cross on the back.
  • Ship Tease : With Neon. Too bad he was faking it to get her power.
  • Sizeshifter : One of his stolen abilities, Fun Fun Cloth, allows him to change the size of anything that gets covered by a cloth he summons.
  • Spell Book : Skill Hunter in a way. All the abilities he stole are in the book.
  • Spell My Name With An S : The databook's name for him is Quwrof Wrlccywrlir. His parents must have been fans of H. P. Lovecraft .
  • The Strategist : One of the few examples of The Chessmaster that actually does get into the fray while thinking about the next move. His battle against Hisoka wasn't a typical Nen battle, instead being more akin to a military general commanding an elaborate impromptu war , which left Hisoka utterly helpless to fight back.
  • Super Power Lottery : Once he regained his Nen abilities Chrollo advanced his Bandit's Secret becoming one of the most powerful characters in the series .
  • Teleportation : One of his stolen abilities.
  • This Is Unforgivable! : Chrollo is seething with HATE after Hisoka murders Kortopi and Shalnark.
  • Took a Level in Badass : After he became freed from Kurapika's chain, Chrollo not only stole a variety of new powers (including some from his subordinates), but also developed a new ability that covers most of the weaknesses of his original nen power, making him incredibly more versatile and effective in combat at the cost of imposing more limits on his abilities .
  • Tranquil Fury : After finding out that Hisoka didn't die after their match and killed Shalnark and Kortopi to get back at him.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid : Chrollo was exceptionally kind, cheerful, and nice when he was a kid, going as far as translating and dubbing a Sentai show that was in another language to make it understandable for everyone that wanted to see it.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind : Averted. He's the only member of the Troupe to be regarded as dangerous as their reputation implies, thanks to his intellect and diverse power set.
  • Wicked Cultured : He enjoys reading books. He also somewhat plays a requiem to Uvogin using the explosions the Troupe was making.

Nobunaga Hazama

Voiced by: naoya uchida (2011 series), takashi matsuyama (1999 series) (japanese), joe j. thomas (2011 series), john knight (1999 series) (english).

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_nobunaga.jpg

  • Affably Evil : Somewhat. He was genuinely friendly towards Gon and Kilua, even offering a chance for them to join the group.
  • Avenging the Villain : After Kurapika killed Uvo, Nobunaga swore that he would find a away to avenge him. Nobunaga: I'll make his killer pay. I'll find him no matter how many people I have to kill!
  • Bash Brothers : With Uvo, whom he says he's known and worked with since before the Phantom Troupe were even founded.
  • In episode 58, he lays unconscious on the floor as a Funny Background Event for half of the episode.
  • Clean Cut : A master of this trope.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass : …but when he does get into battle, we suddenly understand why he's one of the first line fighters of the Spider.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai : One based off an actual Samurai is even better.
  • Exact Words : He told Squalla not to move under any circumstances or he would kill him. The moment his fiancé was threatened, Squalla forgot all about that and lurched forward... Nobunaga promptly took his head off.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper : It does not take much to piss him off.
  • Hot-Blooded : Usually Played for Laughs showing how easy it is to get this man upset.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner : His main fighting style.
  • Katanas Are Just Better : His blade is stronger than his barking.
  • Large Ham : His rants and goofy actions make it hard to take him seriously at times.
  • Leeroy Jenkins : His tendency to fly off the handle has become well-known and infamous among his peers. Seeing the way he can barely restrain himself when he's pissed is proof of it. In the Dark Continent Arc, when Feitan and Phinks accompany him while the Troupe is scouring for Hisoka, Nobunaga assumes that they think he needs babysitting (they're really just following him to figure out how to get past the crime families on the Black Whale and work with them instead of getting into a huge fracas).
  • Manly Tears : He sheds waterworks over the loss of Uvogin.
  • Master Swordsman : His lifestyle and role in the Phantom Troupe.
  • Revenge Before Reason : As befitting of his Hair-Trigger Temper , he more then itching to try and avenge Uvogin. Especially when Chrollo first ordered the Troupe to pull out of Yorknew and he refused out of a desire to get revenge. The ploy doesn't work out however as all this does is cost them one of their members and nearly gets their leader killed.
  • Sphere Factor : He can uses the En within a 4 meters radius (allowing him to detect the exact position of any living creature in that space and decapitate it, no matter how well hidden it is)
  • Vitriolic Best Buds : With Uvogin. Though they argue and fight a lot, and he criticizes Uvo for being simple minded and arrogant, he is crushed by Uvo's death. He is the only Troupe member to shed tears over Uvo , and he becomes obsessed with avenging him.

Feitan Pohtoh

Voiced by: kappei yamaguchi (2011 series), akari hibino (1999 series) (japanese), tom bauer (2011 series), meredith taylor perry (1999 series) (english).

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_feitan.jpg

A rather unpleasant fellow, initially introduced as the Torture Technician of the group, much later revealed to be also one of its top fighters. A sadistic, self-centered jerk with little patience, who respects only force and has yet to show any redeeming human quality. One of the founding members of the Phantom Troupe. His nen ability is to summon a suit of protective armor called "Pain Packer" that shields him from a number of explosive abilities, which are charged by his pain.

  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign : He speaks his "native language" when he is furious enough to activate Pain Packer, which in the original Japanese manga was rendered with letters that look vaguely Chinese note  As in, kanji that aren't already used in Japanese without hiragana or katakana to separate them but are in actuality just gibberish. In the 2011 anime, this was adapted as him simply speaking Japanese (or English in the dub) backwards .
  • Badass Boast : When he makes Zazan boil alive from basically being on the the equivalent of surface of the sun. Doubles as hardcore To the Pain . "Now I return your pain. Is it hot? Throat too scorched to even breathe? You could try to run, but that's assuming you can even move. Make good use of that tough body you're so proud of." Cue Laughing Mad and Giggling Villain taken to the logical extreme''
  • Bash Brothers : When tagged up with Phinks; one makes heads roll, the other makes heads fly.
  • Blood Knight : Being the torture expert this does not come as a surprise.
  • Convection, Schmonvection : Averted, and that aversion is the root of his power's effectiveness—the miniature star he creates vaporizes everything around it except for Feitan, who wears supernatural armor that protects him. Even his fellow Phantom Troupe members will succumb to its heat if they don't keep their distance.
  • Creepy Monotone : In the 2011 anime.
  • Disproportionate Retribution : Effectively roasted Zazan to a crisp because she broke his arm.
  • Evil Laugh : When he kills Zazan. He lets loose with a disturbingly uncharacteristic bloodcurdling laugh.
  • Fireballs : The more pain Feitan experiences determines how long and how much heat will be in his fireball.
  • The Gadfly : After wiping out a Chimera Ant nest, he jumps into a rare moment of this alongside Shalnark when they troll Phinks for being a Tsundere over Chrollo not having called the group back. He runs off comically grinning like a madman when Phinks starts throwing rubble at them as a result.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper : Mostly takes the form of Creepy Monotone / Tranquil Fury , but he sure gets angry easily.
  • Handicapped Badass : His ability weaponizes this trope. He utterly destroyed Zazan after she broke his arm.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners : Most often hangs around with Phinks.
  • Instant Armor : His armor becomes his attack.
  • Jerkass : Even by the Phantom Troupe's standards. In the course of the story, he has addressed exactly one sincere compliment to someone.
  • The Napoleon : Officially 155cm tall, he's the same size as 12-year-old Gon. He doesn't seem to have a problem with it, but still has very bad temper.
  • Off with His Head! : Combined with a Nen-empowered hand chop to the neck, he rips people's heads off with frightening ease and sends them sailing through the air.
  • Parasol of Pain : Subverted, as his umbrella is just a convenient way to conceal his sword, then doubly-subverted when the umbrella is revealed to also hold a powerful projectile firing mechanism.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse : He's one of the smaller members of the Phantom Troupe but is ranked fifth in physical strength.
  • Playing with Fire : Rising Sun. His pain becomes a miniature sun that burns everything.
  • The Power of the Sun : His nen ability Rising Sun creatures a miniature sun that burns anything around it, with its power dependent on his pain. He uses his Pain Packer to protect himself from its heat.
  • She's a Man in Japan : In the Arabic dub of the 1999 anime, Feitan is referred to as female.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist : In the 2011 anime.
  • Speech Impediment : His. Speech. Is. Stilted. And. Robotic . In. The. English. Dub. Eventually this was toned down in later episodes, however.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill : His answer to receiving a serious injury? Creating an uncontained, self-sustained, miniature fusion reaction ( a very small star, basically ), effectively turning the whole place into an absurdly powerful inferno for several minutes.
  • Those Two Guys : Tends to have this Dynamic with Phinks as they almost always accompany each other in their free time.
  • Torture Technician : His major roll in the gang of criminals.
  • Verbal Tic : He ends his sentences with "ne".
  • You No Take Candle : In the Japanese version he speaks with distinctively poor grammar, indicative of his different ethnic background to the rest of the Troupe (most likely being the Hunter World's equivalent of Chinese, although by nationality he technically hails from Meteor City like the rest of the founding members). The English translation of the manga has him speak in semi-stilted and choppy English, the 1999 anime's English dub gives him a female voice actress talking in Hulk Speak , and the 2011 anime's English dub gives him the peculiar Speech Impediment mentioned above until it was eventually toned down.

Machi Komachine

Voiced by: rena maeda (2011 series), noriko namiki (1st voice), takako uemura (2nd voice) (1999 series) (japanese), abby trott (2011 series), marcy lannan (1999 series) (english).

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_machi.jpg

  • '20s Bob Haircut : Back in the days when she was in Meteor City and Chrollo just founded the Phantom Troupe, Machi had a bobbed hairdo, before she changed her image into that of a ninja.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job : Has pink hair in the manga's official art, but has violet or dark blue hair in the anime. Fixed in the 2011 adaptation.
  • Possibly for Chrollo, as the only times she has displayed strong emotions were when talking about him.
  • If you count her Image Song , Thread ~Cruel Spider~ as canon, she does have feelings for him, but considers it hopeless because as long as they're both alive, it's never going to change that he is her boss.
  • Badass Adorable : Machi's pecs don't care that there are no muscles in normal human anatomy that can apply a horizontal squeezing force across the sternum . They still easily trapped Killua's hand when he stabbed her in the chest with it.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension : Hisoka and her obviously has something going on between them although quite subtle.
  • Combat Medic : She fulfills this role for the troupe healing and repairing injuries the members receive in their life of crime.
  • Cruel Mercy : After Hisoka resurrects himself and declares war on the Phantom Troupe, he opts to spare Machi to send her as a messenger that he plans to kill the rest of them on sight.
  • Cute Bruiser : With her big eyes and pink hair, she looks really cute, and it's known that she was the sixth physically strongest member when Uvogin was alive, making her the physically strongest female and making her even physically stronger than Chrollo who is just the seventh.
  • Dark Action Girl : A given since she is part of the Phantom Troupe and grew up in Meteor City.
  • Death Glare : She mostly gives glares towards Hisoka.
  • Emotionless Girl : When she's not talking about Chrollo. She loses her cool when Hisoka promises to kill the Spider including her.
  • Excessive Evil Eye Shadow : Plenty of it around her eyes, exemplifying her gloomy and Dark Action Girl nature.
  • Gut Feeling : Hers is particularly spot on. At one point she's very surprised to find out she was wrong… it later turns out she wasn't .
  • Hanging Around : Has been shown in the anime to use her thread-like nen to string people up and hang them in the blink of an eye.
  • Image Song : "Threads - cruel spider".
  • Like Brother and Sister : She's often seen in company of Nobunaga.
  • Master of Threads : Machi can transmute her aura into threads which she can use to sew up wounds, bind enemies or cut them. The threads have been used to reattach limbs which are shown functioning afterwards suggesting they have some regenerative properties. Machi has noted that the strength of the threads is inversely proportional to their length: a thread as long as the Earth's diameter would be as strong as cotton, but a one-meter long thread could lift a ton.
  • Nightmare Face : The hate-filled expression that comes over her when Hisoka resolves to slaughter the Troupe.
  • Ninja : She moves like one, and dresses like one. And uses Razor Floss , a weapon associated with ninja.
  • Not So Stoic : Machi usually keeps a cool and aloof demeanor, but she is visibly enraged when Hisoka tells her that he plans to kill her and the rest of the Phantom Troupe.
  • Older Than They Look : She looks like a teenager, but she's 24 years old.
  • People Puppets : In a particularly creepy way.
  • Perpetual Frowner : She rarely ever smiles to something.
  • Pet the Dog : After Hisoka's death, she closed his eyes and was going to repair his body. After he resurrected himself, she volunteered to stitch him up. Keep in mind that Hisoka was no longer a member of the Spider and previously fought Chrollo in a death match.
  • Razor Floss : Though she doesn't actually use her thread in a Clean Cut way, preferring strangulation.
  • Ship Tease : With Hisoka.
  • Stronger Than They Look : Despite her small frame and cute appearance, she is able to hold up dozens of dead bodies (all whom look to weigh a lot more than she does) by the end of her razor floss.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality : She pivots between laughably grumpy with a dry wit to indifferent to genuine malice.
  • Tsurime Eyes : She has some of the most slanted eyes of the Troupe, showcasing her lack of craps to give.
  • Tsundere : When Kortopi asks why Machi insists on stitching up Hisoka's dead body, Shalnark explains it that way. Shalnark: When all is said and done, Machi is a real softy.
  • Unkempt Beauty : When she's dressed in undercover streetwear as a civilian.

Phinks Magkav

Voiced by: kenn (2011 series), yoshiaki matsumaya (1999 series) (japanese), david vincent (2011 series), lucas gilbertson (1999 series) (english).

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_phinks.jpg

An ordinary looking guy, at least in his normal clothes, which resemble a jogging outfit. Phinks is often seen in his pharaoh-like headdress, used for ceremonial purposes in his country of origin. He is easily excitable and seems downright euphoric when he kills a nen fighter. His ability is a wind-up punch: He can charge up an arm by spinning it; each full circle will increase the power of the subsequent punch. He tends to take Leadership of the Spiders when Chrollo is not around making him the unofficial underboss.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job : Blond in the manga and 2011 remake, brunette in the 1999 version.
  • Bluff Worked Too Well : When he and Kurapika negotiate on the phone for their respective hostages. Kurapika warns Phinks not to harm Gon or Killua, and when Phinks claims to have roughed them up already Kurapika hangs up immediately . Phinks calls back sheepishly to admit he lied.
  • Character Development : He mellowed after Paku's death.
  • Co-Dragons : He and Pakunoda essentially serve as Chrollo's underbosses in the Troupe. When Kurapika kidnaps Chrollo, the rest of the Troupe are seen leaning on them on the decision makings.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength : By his own admission, he apparently can never tell much force he should put into his Ripper Cyclotron.
  • Enhanced Punch : Phinks's nen ability, Ripper Cyclotron, is basically a punch he enhances with more aura proportional to the number of rotations of his arm. After 15 rotations he was able to atomize a Chimera Ant (who are usually durable enough to shrug off bullets).
  • Face Death with Dignity : Not him (so far), but he believes in it. After mopping the floor with a Chimera Ant Hive, the troupe came across a group of humans-turned ants begging to be killed. Phinks refuses a simply Mercy Kill for them and goads them into fighting him (and the rest of the troupe) to death.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper : Veins start bulging in his head pretty quickly.
  • Hot-Blooded : Very quick to get angry, but he becomes more calm after Paku's demise.
  • Iconic Outfit : Rarely seen without his tracksuit or headdress.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold : Though the Gold part is only demonstrated towards his comrades.
  • Neck Snap : He is quite fond of killing this way and can do it with a flip of his wrist on someone's neck with such speed his victim's heads roll.
  • Pet the Dog : He saves Kalluto before he got incinerated by Feitans' attack.
  • Super-Strength : Like the rest of the group. In Phinks' case he was ranked 2nd in terms of physical strength amongst the spiders, just below Uvo before the latter's death.
  • Those Two Guys : Tends to have this Dynamic with Feitan, as they almost always accompany each other in their free time.
  • Troll : He attempted to try this on Kurapika over the phone after Chrollo was captured, saying that he had to break a few of Gon and Killua's bones for resisting capture (they were unarmed). This resulted in Kurapika hanging up, Phinks calling back and apologizing, being warned by Kurapika not to try that again, and getting a Dope Slap from Nobunaga and Machi at the same time for risking Chrollo's life.

Voiced by: Noriko Hidaka (2011 Series), Yasuhiro Takato (1999 Series) (Japanese), Griffin Burns (2011 Series), Jordan Schartner (1999 Series) (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_shalnark.jpg

  • Adaptation Dye-Job : Has strawberry blond hair in the 1999 version but light blond in the 2011 remake.
  • Berserk Button : Don't toss his cellphone around like a toy. He needs it to use his abilities, and while he treats people he controls like toys, that most certainly isn't one to him.
  • Blood Knight : Not being able to remember all the ass-kicking he does in his Super Mode wouldn't be a useful drawback if he didn't enjoy bloodshed enough for that to be a non-negligible sacrifice.
  • Brought Down to Normal : Allows Chrollo to take his powers in preparation for his fight against Hisoka. This bites him in the butt when he later gets ambushed by Hisoka.
  • Character Death : Slaughtered by Hisoka in Chapter 357.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle : His death was shockingly abrupt and brutal , given how tough Phantom Troupe members are supposed to be. Hisoka distracted him with Kortopi's head, moved too fast too be seen with his new Bungee Gum prosthetic leg, disappeared from Shalnark's line of vision, and then hit him so hard his body hurtled off like it got hit by a train, killed instantly. In the manga, it happens so fast you can barely tell what happened, because he's hit so hard, his body is rendered a blur .
  • Dissonant Serenity : His reaction to one of his People Puppets , who he had been forcing to shoot at Mafia members, being shot to pieces? "Aw, he broke." See "Perpetual Smiler", below.
  • Dead Guy on Display : Hisoka leaves his corpse on a playground swing with his arms suspended by the swings' ropes, like a puppet. And just to add to the affirmation that he's dead, crows have gathered around him and started to pick at his body, as well as Kortopi's severed head.
  • Dies Wide Open : Killed so suddenly his eyes stayed wide and vacant.
  • Evil Genius : One of the smartest minds in the troupe: he's the one making computer searches for them, and he quickly understands that Greed Island is a real location.
  • Golden Super Mode : By putting an antenna in himself, he can power himself up enough to easily kill a Chimera Ant, but to the cost of short term memory loss and pains for two to three days afterwards.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard : Gave his powers to Chrollo to give him an advantage in his death match with Hisoka. Not only does Hisoka survive, but the powerless Shalnark ends up being Hisoka's second victim after the match.
  • Oh, Crap! : When Hisoka walks out of a park restroom with Kortopi's head, Shalnark immediately drops his smartphone (Chrollo is currently borrowing his usual bat-shaped phone) and springs into action. Hisoka lobs his buddy's head at him, which leaves Shalnark's attentions occupied long enough for Hisoka to rail into him and knock him dead with one blow.
  • People Puppets : He even thinks of them as being "toys".
  • Perpetual Smiler : In the manga, to unsettling effect.
  • Psychopathic Manchild : Definitely has some shades of this. Looks to be somewhere in his late-teens, always carrying an innocent smile on his face, sees his People Puppets as toys, reacts with childlike disappointment whenever they get killed—Shalnark definitely comes across as one of the most unsettling members of the Troupe.
  • Revenge by Proxy : Hisoka was obviously a little sore about losing so spectacularly to Chrollo (he only hit Chrollo once where Chrollo killed him (temporarily) while costing him his hand, leg, and nose ). During the fight, both Shalnark and Kortopi's abilities were vital to defeating Hisoka. Aside from the obvious tactic of depriving Chrollo of weapons by killing them and that he knew they would be without their special abilities, Hisoka probably also killed them for their role in his defeat and that he knows it will sting that much more for Chrollo having his comrades die because of their connection to the fight (Chrollo will blame himself for their being defenseless and because their help singled them out specifically for Hisoka's retribution).
  • Supernatural Phone : His phone along with his antenna allow him to control a person's movement and make them speak through texting.
  • Tareme Eyes : His placid eyes demonstrate that he's mellow, but betray the fact he's a cold-blooded killer.

Franklin Bordeaux

Voiced by: hidenobu kiuchi (2011 series), yoshinobu kaneko (1999 series), kenji nomura (greed island ova) (japanese), edward bosco (2011 series), steve olson (1999 series) (english).

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_franklin.jpg

  • Armor-Piercing Attack : His Nen bullets are powerful (and the size of a grapefruit).
  • A-Team Firing : Haha, no ; when his ability is introduced , he slaughters an entire room of several hundred people in 10 seconds.
  • Blood Knight : He's just as violent as Uvogin and Bonolenov.
  • Body Horror : Among other things, he has a visible suture around the mouth, Buddha-style elongated ears with bone piercings, and cut-off fingertips. He did all this himself to look more threatening , but because of how Nen works , this also made his Nen bullets stronger.
  • The Brute : He takes on this role more once Uvogin is killed by Kurapika.
  • Characterization Marches On : He was first introduced as an easily irritated Jerkass , but because there were already several characters of this type in the Phantom Troupe, he was quickly reworked as a quieter , more sympathetic individual.
  • Finger Gun : A literal example (Togashi seems to like this trope ).
  • Fingore : Detachable finger tips, linked with chains to the rest of the hand.
  • Frankenstein's Monster : Seems to be a deliberate part of his look (flashbacks show him to have been more human looking once).
  • Genius Bruiser : Like Uvogin he is not a fool by any means, being one of the most combat-focused members of the troupe while also ranking as one of their smartest and cool-headed.
  • Gentle Giant : The "gentle" part applies only inside the Phantom Troupe. Outside, it's different.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars : Has large scars on his face.
  • Long-Range Fighter : His preferred method of attack with his ability.
  • More Dakka : His power is to riddle several people with nen bullets.
  • Odd Friendship : With Shizuku.
  • Team Dad : He resolves the conflict between the members who want to let Chrollo die to find and kill Kurapika and the others who want to save Chrollo.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill : One of his finger guns is enough to kill several people and even blast away those who can protect themselves with Nen. Multiply it by ten, and you have yourself a walking bloodbath- Franklin alone wiped out an entire room of hundreds of high-ranking members from the criminal underworld, plus their valets and bodyguards in a matter of seconds.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds : With Uvogin and Nobunaga.

Voiced by: Romi Park (2011 Series), Yoshiko Iseki (1999 Series) (Japanese), Erica Lindbeck (2011 Series), Tracy Sutton (1999 Series) (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_pakunoda.jpg

  • Adaptational Attractiveness : Her design in the 2011 anime is slightly prettier than in the manga and first anime.
  • Affably Evil : She acted very polite towards Gon and Killua.
  • Alas, Poor Villain : Her death is somber and has a major blow on the Troupe.
  • Awesome, but Impractical : She can create Nen bullets holding any of the memories she read, or even her own, then fire them at someone's head to transmit those memories to that person. If a person receives his own memory, he becomes amnesiac. This would be all good if these bullets didn't keep the full destructive power of normal bullets . However , all the members of the Phantom Troupe are Immune to Bullets , so…
  • Badass in a Nice Suit : Sans bra .
  • Butter Face : A mild case. She isn't exactly ugly but her face is far from pretty.
  • Cool Big Sis : The oldest female of the group.
  • The Dragon : She's more or less Chrollo's second in command of the spiders.
  • Generic Cuteness : Deliberately defied. Despite her knockout figure, her face is plain-looking at best.
  • Gag Nose : Her face looks odd due to it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice : After having received a Judgement Chain from Kurapika, forbidding her to tell the other members of the Spider what happened to their leader, she fired six bullets containing her own memory at them, dying as soon as the bullets impacted, but thus managing to transmit all she had learnt about Kurapika.
  • Living Lie Detector : What she is in effect when she uses her power. Even without it, she seems to be very good at telling if someone is lying or not.
  • Ms. Fanservice : Her outfits highlight her figure, her ample cleavage and killer legs in particular are in constant display by her regular outfit.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline : Despite wearing a suit, she has a neckline that plunges to her stomach.
  • "Not So Different" Remark : Melody points out that she and Kurapika are similar. They're both intelligent, level-headed, outwardly ruthless determinators that in reality care more about their comrades than the mission.
  • Psychometry : She wants to know something about a person and get info from them, all she has to do is get in physical contact with him/her and activate her powers via a question. The only foolproof way to counter her skills is simply not knowing what she's talking about, as she's so good at it that she can even pick up subconscious thoughts and know when they're trying to lie to her .
  • Respected by the Respected : She sacrifices her life to show the troupe that there are people in the world (Gon and Killua) that are willing to do good by them and place value in their lives, whereas they operated on the assumption that no one outside their group would. By doing so, they realize that there is a fundamental virtue in the boys' actions, where they don't want their dear friend Kurapika to kill people, good or villainous. This is the very reason the Troupe decide to lay off their conflict with Gon and Killua, though the hunt for Kurapika still remains a top priority for them regardless.
  • Sexy Secretary : She’s Chrollo’s second-in-command and a very attractive woman at that.
  • Stripperific : She doesn’t exactly wear much.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality : Lampshaded by Melody, who notes that the only reason the hostage exchange was allowed to happen is because Pakunoda is much more caring and humane than the other members of the Phantom Troupe, even though she tries to keep a stoic facade.
  • Telepathy : She can read the memory of people she touches; she has to ask a question to activate the memory , but said question can be very open, a detail Chrollo took advantage of at some point: Pakunoda : What do I ask them? Chrollo : I want to know what they're hiding .
  • Touch Telepathy : Can read memories via touching but has to ask questions to activate it.
  • Thought-Aversion Failure : Incorporated into her powers by the fact that a person she interrogates will instinctively think of the correct answer of any question asked of them, even if they know Paku's powers ahead of time and know they shouldn't think about it. The only reason Gon and Killua scrape by her interrogation is because, at the time, they genuinely didn't know the answers she was after.
  • Vapor Wear : When she got older, she stopped covering herself underneath her suit jacket and let her buxom show.
  • Undying Loyalty : To Chrollo. Her final moments are to help her teammates find where their leader is.

Voiced by: Akio Ōtsuka (2011 Series), Eiji Takemoto (1999 Series) (Japanese), Patrick Seitz (2011 Series), Mike Shepherd (1999 Series) (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_uvogin.jpg

  • Afro Ass Kicker : His previous hairstyle was an afro and he had already kicked many asses.
  • Animal Motifs : Lion .
  • "My head and neck are all I need to kill you all." He wasn't lying .
  • To Kurapika: "Where do you want to die? I'll humor any requests."
  • Bash Brothers : With Nobunaga.
  • The Berserker : He manages to be be this and The Juggernaut simultaneously.
  • Blood Knight : He has an interesting take on the issue, claiming that he feels nothing when he kills people most of the time, but that he loves killing people who came to him to avenge someone.
  • The Brute : He's the physically strongest and least strategic of the Phantom Troupe.
  • Carpet of Virility : That wild man's chest has got plenty of hair on it.
  • Combat Pragmatist : When he got paralyzed from the neck down, he used his teeth and his own voice to kill his aggressors.
  • Then, however, he was on the receiving end of one from Kurapika, who was able to completely heal the only solid hit Uvo landed on him, and spent the entire fight chaining Uvo up so he could torture him to death at the very end.
  • Defiant to the End : When trapped in Kurapika's lethal Nen chains, Uvogin utterly refuses to reply to his questions, fully knowing he would be killed. "Kill me... kill me, kill me... FUCK YOU!"
  • Drink-Based Characterization : Uvo's favorite drink was canned beer that looked suspiciously similar to Heineken. Represents his manly and roguish exterior. Most of The Phantom Troupe begin defaulting to it as their drink of choice after Uvo's passing.
  • Evil Counterpart : To Gon. Nobunaga points out their similarities (nen types and personalities) and even offers to recruit Gon into the Troupe.
  • Genius Bruiser : Despite looking and generally acting like Dumb Muscle , as the Shadow Beasts found out, much to their detriment, he really isn't , slaughtering many in imaginatively and pragmatically brutal ways.
  • The Giant : At 258cm ( Freaking eight foot six ) and 189 kilos (415lbs) of pure muscle, he certainly qualifies, and his fighting style is suitably Unskilled, but Strong .
  • Hot-Blooded : Along with Nobu he has the shortest tempter out of all the spiders.
  • I'm a Humanitarian : He eats the head of one of Shadow Beasts and say it was a low-class meal.
  • Karmic Death : He claims he enjoyed killing those seeking revenge for his murders. He ends having an Undignified Death at the hands of a person seeking revenge against The Phantom Troupe.
  • Kiai : A weaponized version, no less; at one point he screams so loudly that his opponent's brain explodes inside his head .
  • Immune to Bullets : A bazooka won't hurt him either.
  • The Juggernaut : According to source material, he stands at a whopping 8' 6" (making him over a foot taller than the second tallest member, Franklin) and weighs over 400 lbs. No wonder he can tear through Shadow Beasts.
  • Killed Off for Real : The first member of the spiders to be killed by Kurapika's hands.
  • Large Ham : One of the loudest members of the group.
  • Leeroy Jenkins : What he appears to be at first.
  • Made of Iron : Very much it takes a lot just to hurt this guy.
  • Nemean Skinning : He wears the skin of what seems to be a bear.
  • Megaton Punch : His Nen ability is Big Bang Impact, which is a punch with the explosive power of a missile.
  • "Not So Different" Remark : While Uvo wasn't alive enough to utter this phrase himself at the time, the other Phantom Troupe members point out that Gon is similar to Uvo in a lot of ways. Franklin : He wears his emotions on his sleeve, and when he's angry he forgets about consequences. But most of all, he's strongest when he's fighting for someone else. [...] Uvo never admitted it, but he preferred having someone to protect.
  • Oh, Crap! : One of his very few cases of complete and utter shock is an entirely understandable one against Kurapika, when the latter reveals his Specialist ability that allowed him to make a mockery of Uvogin's raw Enhancer ability. It's at this point that the battle's already been decided and Uvogin damn well knows it.
  • One-Man Army : How badass is he? Well, at one point he kills three highly trained and superpowered assassins while paralyzed from the neck down.
  • Revenge Before Reason : After he was captured, his fellow trope members bust him out. Stating they got the auction items, so the mission was more or less accomplished and they just had to disappear. But he was so pissed off at Kurapika capturing him, he refused to leave and wanted a rematch. It doesn't end well for him.
  • Sacrificial Lion : He refused to cough up information on his comrades despite knowing it would lead to a painful death.
  • Silver Fox : Used to have black hair, which turned gray when he got older, and he also decided to start keeping it long and untamed, which caused him to look a lot more like a wild animal.
  • Screaming Warrior : He used this method to take down a shadow beast who manipulated hair.
  • Super-Strength : In theory, all the members of the Phantom Troupe have Super-Strength , but in practice, Uvogin takes it further. Kurapika specifically targeted him first to see if Chain Jail would work on the physically strongest member of the Troupe.
  • Undignified Death : A seemingly unstoppable juggernaut, Uvogin is bound by a seemingly flimsy chain by a dainty looking young man. If there was ever a scenario where underestimation was feasible, it was during this fight with Kurapika. Thing is, Kurapika is driven by a bloody vendetta, and the flimsy chain is an instrument created with the very purpose of killing Uvo and his friends. At the mercy of Kurapika, Uvo's heart is destroyed by the chain, unable to even lift a finger.
  • Undying Loyalty : Even until his death Uvogin refused to rat on his allies to Kurapika.
  • Unskilled, but Strong : He's probably the most powerful human Enhancer in the series besides Netero and Adult Gon and, while not dumb, he doesn't even try to fight with anything other than pure strength. Even his Nen attack is just a really powerful punch.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds : With Nobunaga and Franklin.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene : During his capture by Kurapika.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hxh_shizuku.jpg

  • Artistic License – Biology : Shizuku herself; she only allows Deme-chan to suck up things that she doesn't consider to be alive, but that seems to only include animals visible to the naked eyes; blood, for instance, is okay (this is a plot point).
  • Bag of Holding : Her Nen vacuum is used to hold treasure and corpses.
  • Bespectacled Cutie : She has the appearance of one, which perfectly hides her grotesque persona.
  • Blood Knight : She shows a small smile in the anime when Feitan orders her to help him finish off the rest of the Holy Beasts.
  • Cloudcuckoolander : She has a chronic goldfish memory that leads to many spacey moments, where people can't believe she doesn't remember anything she just did, no matter how significant it was.
  • Dissonant Serenity : Her mostly calm expression makes a slaughter feel like this. It's especially notable during the first auction night in Yorknew City when she jumped and delivered a killing blow to a running Baise (despite the animators trying their best with the lighting, color composition, and the music to make her look menacing) and when she vacuumed the corpses and blood in the auction house like a housekeeper doing their daily chores.
  • The Ditz : She tends to forget a lot of things often. And her glasses are always drooping off her face.
  • Drop The Hammer : Another way she can use Deme-Chan.
  • Emotionless Girl : Not in a cold way like Machi, but Shizuku shows even less emotion than her.
  • Empathic Weapon : Deme-Chan, maybe.
  • Forgetful Jones : She forgets people's names, even meetings with them and that she arm-wrestled Gon. Feitan: When she forgets something, it's gone.
  • Genius Ditz : She occasionally has good hindsights and intuitions (like being able to instantly decipher the poetic code used in Chrollo's predictions ).
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon : Or to be precise, Girl with Monster-looking vacuum which she uses to smash people with.
  • Hidden Buxom : She dresses in jeans and a long-sleeve black shirt so she barely has any skin on display. But when Shizuku's clothes are stripped off by a Chimera Ant, it's revealed that she has huge boobs - on par with Pakunoda at least. Many of her alts in the Hunter x Hunter Battle Collection card game go to great lengths to show them off, putting her in skimpy leotards with deep cleavage, small bikinis, and occasionally having her chest pressed up against things.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed : Literally inverted, she lost a round of arm wrestling with Gon because she is left handed.
  • Improbable Weapon User : A vacuum of all things she uses as her weapon of choice. Combined with her own power it's still capable of smashing unsuspecting people's heads to death though.
  • Innocently Insensitive : When Shizuku and Bonolenov learn that Chrollo no longer has access to Neon's fortune-telling ability (which means Neon died) , she calls Chrollo's Bandit's Secret book a Death Note . She doesn't realize how she may have hurt Chrollo (and Bonolenov tells her nicely to keep her thoughts to herself), as Kortopi and Shalnark were killed by Hisoka while Chrollo borrowed their abilities .
  • Killer Rabbit : Both Shizuku and Deme-Chan. Both are innocent looking enough, but have proven themselves quite more lethal than they appear.
  • Little Miss Badass : She looks cute, but she is just as dangerous as the rest of the spiders.
  • Ms. Fanservice : During her fight against the Chimera Ant named Pike, she had to strip down to her undergarments after being caught by his web.
  • Odd Friendship : With Franklin.
  • Rummage Fail : Shizuku can retrieve the last thing Deme-Chan sucked up. Everything else is lost forever.
  • Tareme Eyes : She and Shalnark have these eyes.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation : Blinky.
  • Weapons That Suck : Literally the power of her Blinky vacuum.
  • Your Days Are Numbered : Something like this happens in the Dark Continent Arc. By then, Neon Nostrade's fortune for Shizuku has vanished from Chrollo's book, and Chrollo thinks it's just because so much time has gone by that the Nen used to write it has completely dissipated. Shizuku, however, takes it as a warning sign of her impending demise. Although, it could also be the opposite and something has possibly happened to alter the outcome of her future and nullify the fortune, be it it for the better or worse.

Bonolenov Ndongo

  • Bandage Mummy : With the exception of his eyes, Bonolenov is usually completely covered and bound in bandages to hide the holes in his body and prevent things from getting into them while not in use. The bandages come off when he gets into a fight.
  • Berserk Button : Insult his tribe and he will destroy you.
  • Body Horror : Under his bandages you see his body is full of holes.
  • Blood Knight : Like Uvogin and Feitan.
  • Dance Battler : His style of combat.
  • Death from Above : His Jupiter attack, in which he conjures a giant sphere with the appearance of the planet Jupiter and crushes his enemies with it.
  • Human Weapon : His whole body is a weapon. And he is able to conjure others.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout : He fights with sound.
  • Musical Assassin : His power is to create music through the holes in his body.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy : Really proud of his tribe, and since his Nen ability comes from their traditional way of war...
  • The Quiet One : The last member of the Phantom Troupe to be shown speaking, and the one who lurks in the background the longest.
  • Tranquil Fury : When the Chimera Ant he was fighting against shrugs off his opening attack, Battle Cantable: Prologue, he insults Bonolnov for not having a lot of pride in his abilities after stating before that his powers were fueled by his pride. Bonolenov calmly replies that the insult is just the ramblings of a beast, and that there's no point in taking it back. He then proceeds to squash the Ant flat with his Battle Cantable: Jupiter.
  • Red Boxing Gloves : Always seen wearing a pair of these, with the boxing shorts and boots to match. It might be an allusion to Muay Thai Boxers , the fact that Bonolenov has to first dance in order to call his powers might also be a reference to the ritual that Thai boxers has to do in the beginning of a Muay Thai match where do a dance called the Wai Khru.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job : Has teal hair in the 1999 version but gray in the 2011 remake.
  • Adaptation Expansion : He gets way more lines and scenes in the 2011 anime remake.
  • Brought Down to Normal : Seems to have had his copying ability stolen by Chrollo, who attempts to use it against Hisoka.
  • Enemy-Detecting Radar : Of a type. He can determine the location of any of his copies, or, in the case of the fake buildings, when someone enters them. Poor Squala unwittingly carries around the fake Scarlet Eyes, which leads the Phantom Troupe right to him.
  • Me's a Crowd : Gallery Fake, the power to duplicate any object into a mock copy many times over, including people.
  • Off with His Head! : Decapitated by Hisoka in Chapter 357.
  • Out of Focus : He's arguably the least developed of the troupe, not helping matters is his death.
  • The Quiet One : Speaks seemingly only about business, and only when he has to.
  • Spam Attack : Not an attack per se, but he can create quite a few copies of anything he clones. He makes a small city of fake hideouts.
  • Squishy Wizard : While his ability is very useful, he is the physically weakest member of the Troupe. It should be noted that he is the weakest in the group's standards.
  • Undignified Death : Beheaded on the john!

Anime Characters

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/omokage_hxh.jpg

  • All Your Powers Combined : He can fuse with up to three soul dolls to use the strength and Nen abilities they possess.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good : When everyone including his sister confronts him he doesn’t seem to get why they would have a problem with stealing other peoples eyes and making dolls out of them.
  • Eye Scream : He likes to rip out the eyes of people to help create his soul dolls.
  • Four Is Death : His number in the Phantom Troupe and his powers are related to death in that he works with corpses in a sense.
  • Irony : His soul doll version of his sister Retz ends up killing him in the end despite his work and efforts to create her .
  • Meaningful Name : His name means vestige which could relate to his involvement with the Kuruta massacre or his aged appearance.
  • Necromancy : In a way he was able to revive his younger sister by turning her into a Soul Doll. She even gains some human feelings as movie goes on. His creations are not zombies in the traditional sense as they can eat and drink like people living can, but the main detail is the lack of eyes in most of his dolls.
  • Shipper on Deck : Downplayed where he sarcastically asked Retz if she started to get attached to Gon when she begged him to return his eyes.
  • White Hair, Black Heart : Well silver hair actually, but he still does vile things like ripping out a corpse's eyes or making a doll of his younger sister.

The Phantom Troupe is one of the most iconic villain organizations in the history of manga and anime. Hunter x Hunter created this eclectic group of extraordinary thieves to be a core antagonistic organization in the series. The Phantom Troupe guide reveals why this is and who they are.

When starting the Hunter x Hunter series, it can be daunting. With hundreds of episodes and chapters around, there is a lot to take in. This includes the many characters that are in it. The Phantom Troupe guide consists of some of the essential villains featured in the series. Here’s everything that you should know about them.

Bottom Line Up Front

The Phantom Troupe is the most critical criminal organization in Hunter x Hunter. In the ongoing manga series, this group has been a significant part of several different story arcs. In addition, they are pretty much the only recurring antagonistic organization.

The Phantom Troupe comprises 13 members, each number 1-12, with 0 being given to the leader. Originally formed as a group of outcast thieves looking to survive and make money together, they have become something so much more.

They are fiercely loyal to one another and will commit horrific acts for missions to make some money. The leader decides new group members, though it is possible for a prospective new member to kill an existing member to take their place.

For Hunter x Hunter main character, Kurapika , they are his greatest enemy for the tragic massacre of his Kurta Clan. These are all of the known members of the Phantom Troupe to date:

  • Chrollo Lucilfer
  • Nobunaga Hazama
  • Feitan Portor
  • Machi Komacine
  • Hisoka Morow
  • Kalluto Zoldyck
  • Phinks Macgub
  • Franklin Bordeau
  • Shizuku Murasaki
  • Bonolenov Ndongo
  • Illumi Zoldyck

Who Is the Phantom Troupe?

Phantom Troupe

The Phantom Troupe is one of the core groups in the Hunter x Hunter series. They are a band of thieves who are among the best. However, while they are known as accomplished thieves, this is almost underselling the dangerous group.

Many of the missions that the Phantom Troupe undertakes is to steal and earn money. However, they will also do other tasks at the same time. This means other evil deeds, including killing anyone who is necessary to accomplish their goals.

This is seen in the greatest evil act of the Troupe: killing the Kurta Clan. They have no qualms about other people’s lives and are highly loyal to one another. This comes from their roots as outcasts. Though the group is somewhat exclusive, new members can join.

Each person in the Phantom Troupe is numbered 1-12, except for the leader, who is known with the number 0. The numbering system is interesting since few details are made clear of what it all means. It does not seem to be a traditional ranking system or indicate their role.

The Phantom Troupe are the only major recurring villains in the Hunter x Hunter series. While others are mainly relegated to their respective arcs, the Phantom Troupe are an ever-present threat. While they do not necessarily have much beef with Gon and Killua, Kurapika’s life goal is to track them down.

And then there is the overwhelmingly complicated matter of Hisoka. While not a hero at all, he is a Hunter and crosses paths with the main characters often. As such, the overall Phantom Troupe is constantly getting involved with the central story arcs in the series.

Are They the Main Villains in Hunter x Hunter?

Given how important the Phantom Troupe is, it would not be necessarily wrong to consider them the main villains in Hunter x Hunter. Though this is not confirmed, they may be the endgame enemies. This is due to a few factors that we know.

Since the series is still ongoing, it is hard to say where the story is next. That said, no matter what, the Phantom Troupe will be part of it. They are the only major returning villains in the series that come back repeatedly. Well, except for Hisoka (more on that in a bit).

There is likely the main goal for them that is much more special than what we saw with past villains. Others like the Chimera Ants and the other players in Greed Island are only relative to their respective arcs. But the Phantom Troupe continues to be a menace across the entirety of the series.

Then there is also the matter of Kurapika. His entire life goal is to take out the Phantom Troupe, and that means they will continue to show up in the series until a resolution happens. To make matters worse, Killua now has his drama with members of the Phantom Troupe.

There are a lot of unresolved issues, and they will likely go ahead in the future. It is even possible that the Phantom Troupe will play a significant role as the main villain again in the final story arc for the series. For now, though, this is what we know about them.

Phantom Troupe History

Phantom Troupe

The Phantom Troupe began with the founding members in Meteor City. This is one of the most elusive locations in the Hunter x Hunter world as it is not even known by most people. Little is known about Meteor City as it is an exciting location that the series has not visited yet.

Despite mentioning it many times in the story, we have not seen it yet. All that we know then is from the descriptions by the Phantom Troupe members. It is a city made up of outcasts that have been thrown away from society.

This is seen in the fact that all Meteor City residents are essentially nonexistent. Though we do not know what country this city is in, it does not matter as the residents of the town do not legally exist. They have no official residency or documents that prove that they are citizens of that nation.

In addition, the city is known as a junkyard, so it is possible that it is a dirty and crime-ridden place. It is presumed that Meteor City is a hazardous place to live for its citizens. Most likely because of this, a few city members banded together at a very young age.

Those are the founding members of the Phantom Troupe who would become infamous villains. They were founded by Chrollo along with six other Spiders. They include Feitan, Franklin, Machi, Nobunaga, Pakunoda, and Uvogin.

They stood by each other’s backs as this group and are even more loyal to one another than the later members. Since the creation of the Phantom Troupe, there have been several different members that have gone throughout its ranks, and it is not exactly the same as it was at the beginning.

Spiders and Organization Explained

The Spiders is a nickname for the members of the Phantom Troupe. This is due to the spider-shaped tattoo that each of them wears somewhere on their body. This is known from a couple of the members who have shown their unique tattoos.

The spider is shaped with 12 legs, representing each member of the Phantom Troupe. The head or main body of the spider represents the leader of them, Chrollo. In addition to the shape of the spider, there is a number that is placed on the tattoo that shows the placement of that specific person.

It is presumed that Chrollo has a 0 on his tattoo, while this has not actually been seen before. The organization of the Troupe is quite bizarre and hidden. All that is known in the series is that Chrollo is the group leader and not much else.

There are some roles that a few of the members have, but that is it. Feitan is the substitute leader for the group if something happens to Chrollo or he is not around. In addition, there is an attack squad in the group that is focused on fighting.

Each of them has their own Nen powers and abilities, but it seems that the numbers do not play into this. Just because someone is a higher number does not necessarily mean they are more robust. They will do arm wrestling to see who the more powerful members are.

For the most part, there is a lot of autonomy that the members of the group have. They are usually free to go about their missions and business in their own ways.

This is especially seen in someone like Hisoka, who is a member of the Hunters Association, who are the “good guys” while being part of the “bad guys” at the same time.

How New Members Join the Group

Phantom Troupe

Initially, the Phantom Troupe began with less than the max 13 members. As such, they have a way of letting new members join them. This is something that we have directly seen before in the series. New members can only join the group by being approved by the leader, Chrollo.

Unfortunately, he is the only one who can make that decision. The other Spiders are able to influence the decision but they have no ultimate say over the matter. This does mean that someone can nominate a person to join the group but it is up to Chrollo to make the final decision.

In addition, one of the most common ways for a new member to join is to have a prospective Spider kill a the existing member. Despite this crazy act, they can possibly take the place of that person if they wish to. This is another situation that we have heard of before in Hunter x Hunter.

The Troupe also does not have to have a full set of members at one time. It is possible for the group to be less than the max 13 without that being an issue. This is another instance that we have seen in the series before. This leaves room when it happens for new members to join.

All Known Members of the Phantom Troupe

To help with getting to know the Phantom Troupe better, we are going to break down all of the members. These are the known members of the Phantom Troupe that we have seen so far. To be clear, there is a chance that there are other members beyond these.

However, we have not seen or learned about them thus far in the series. In addition, it is worth noting that there are going to be some spoiler-related moments detailed in these character descriptions. I will make sure not to spoil unnecessary events but you will find out about the outcome of some characters.

To be able to talk about some of the characters, it is crucial to reveal the fates of some of them. This is due to the fact that some members have replaced others. At the same time, there are also some spoilers for who joins the Phantom Troupe later in the series. With this in mind, here’s what you should know about all of the Phantom Troupe members we know about.

Chrollo Lucilfer: Number 0

Phantom Troupe Chrollo Lucilfer

Going in numerical order, we have the leader of them all, Chrollo. Chrollo is the mysterious, attractive, and menacing head honcho of the group. He is the founder of the Phantom Troupe and the enemy that no one wants to mess with.

His Nen ability is an insane one, allowing him to copy the skills of other characters and use them in battle. However, he does not rely too heavily on this ability. He is an intimidating foe without it as seen in the fact that Kurapika sealed his ability.

Even without his ability, he is able to destroy enemies with his bare hands and brute force. With his ability intact, though, he is nigh unstoppable as seen in his ability to defeat even Hisoka.

Nobunaga Hazama: 1

Nobunaga is one of the founding members of the Troupe. He has a distinct appearance and name that reference the older time period of Japan. He wields a katana in battle and is a thorough fighter. He also has one of the stranger personalities of the group.

He does not seem overly evil like some of the other members of the group, like Chrollo, for instance. That said, he is a horrible person, having participated in the Kurta Clan incident. Even still, he is a smart member of the group and someone who can be somewhat reasoned with.

Feitan Portor: 2

Feitan is a bizarre member of the Troupe and also one of the most terrifying. Currently seen as one of the leaders of the group, he is the interim. With Chrollo being out of commission due to the events with Kurapika, Feitan has taken over the Troupe and plays a major role.

Feitan also plays a horrible role in the activities of the group, being the torturer of them. He will question and interrogate enemies, using nasty methods to get it done. Feitan has a harsh personality and there is almost no good that can be seen in him. He does not even shy away from antagonizing his own teammates in the group.

Machi Komacine: 3

Machi Komacine

There are few female members of the Troupe and Machi is one of them. She is also one of the founding members of the team as well, coming from Meteor City. She has a beautiful and attractive personality, one that is intimidating but also quite different from the rest of the group.

Her pink hair and traditional garments help her to stand out as a more “normal” person in appearance. Machi is not a person that should be messed with, however. She has a harsh personality that hides the passion and caring that she has for Chrollo.

She will do anything for him and will even fight her fellow members to protect Chrollo. She is also the healer in the group, giving her the dual-sided nature of being a lifesaver and life taker at the same time.

Omokage: 4 (former member)

It is worth noting that Omokage is the only member of the Troupe who is not canon to the manga. This is due to his appearance in the Phantom Rouge anime film. He was the previous holder of the 4th spot in the team before Hisoka took his place.

He grew up as a doll maker prior to joining the Troupe. In the story of Phantom Rouge, it is revealed that he wanted to join the group to make a collection of soul dolls. He wished to make a soul doll out of every member of the group.

He departed the Phantom Troupe with the conclusion of his mission. Presumably, he is alive at this point in the story since he is one of the only former members who chose to leave on his own. That said, he is not canon in the manga at this time so it is uncertain if he will ever make a reappearance.

Hisoka Morow: 4 (former member)

Hisoka Morow

Hisoka Morow is one of the main characters of Hunter x Hunter. He is a former member of the group and was also numbered four. After defeating Omokage’s soul doll, he was able to take over as the next Troupe member. However, this origin story is technically not canon to the manga yet.

As such, the Hisoka that is canon to the manga and anime is that he is member number four at the start of the series. When we meet him, he is joining the Hunters Association and eventually doubles as a Hunter and Phantom Troupe member at the same time.

His Nen power allows him to use bungee gum to add a sticky material to his body composition. He is unbelievably powerful and a deadly killer that does not hesitate to eliminate his foes in a fraction of a second. He is one of the main people who comes across Gon and the gang throughout the series, being obsessed with the main heroes.

Hisoka is very much unlike any of the other Troupe members. He joined after the events with the Kurta Clan and had nothing to do with that.

His clown-like appearance carries over to his wild personality that is eccentric and passionate. He left the Phantom Troupe after the events of the Yorknew City arc with his intention of defeating Chrollo someday. Most recently in the manga, he has defeated a couple of members of the Troupe and is being hunted down for his betrayal.

Kalluto Zoldyck: 4

Kalluto Zoldyck is a member of the assassin Zoldyck family and the younger brother of main character Killua and villain Illumi. Yet another owner of the number 4 spot in the Troupe, he took over the spot that was left behind after Hisoka departed.

Kalluto is young and inexperienced. Though he has immense talent that makes him a rightful member of the group, he has a lot to learn from his new teammates. Being the younger brother of Killua, it is possible that they will have to face each other as enemies someday.

Phinks Macgub: 5

Phinks Magcub

Phinks is one of the original members of the Troupe, hailing from Meteor City. He has an upfront and brash personality, picking fights quite often. That said, he is a loyal follower of Chrollo.

It also appears that he seems to have a fascinating interest in Shizuku. In addition, he attempts to a mentor of sorts for Kalluto when he joins.

Shalnark: 6 (former member)

One of the other OG members of the Phantom Troupe is Shalnark. A now-former member of the group, he was unique in being part of the Hunters Association. This is interesting since only Hisoka and later Illumi also are employed by the Association. He was, ironically, killed by Hisoka recently in the manga.

Franklin Bordeau: 7

One of the more mysterious members of the Troupe, at least to me, is Franklin. He appears in many of the events that the rest of the group is in but he has uncertain goals.

He does appear to not be as wild and unhinged as some of the other Spiders. He is also not predicted to die unlike the five members that will supposedly die against Kurapika.

Shizuku Murasaki: 8

Shizuku Murasaki is one of the only other female members of the Troupe. She had contact and a brief relationship with Gon and the gang during the Yorknew City arc.

She is a thoughtful Spider and is able to win fights in methodical ways. Unfortunately, she is one of the five members who is predicted to die in the future if she fights Kurapika. She joined after the death of a currently mysterious eighth Spider.

Pakunoda: 9 (former member)

Pakunoda

One of the other Meteor City residents to start the Troupe is Pakunoda. She played an important role in the Yorknew City arc, meeting with Kurapika and learning the truth.

Kurapika put a chain on her heart, forcing Pakunoda to not reveal information about the Hunter. However, Pakunoda broke this rule and was killed by the Judgement Chain in the process.

Bonolenov Ndongo: 10

Bonolenov is by far the most unknown member of the Troupe. Though he appears in the various arcs that the other members are in like Greed Island and Yorknew City, he does little in each of them.

His largest appearance is in the Chimera Ant arc where he removes his bandages to show the holes that were forcibly made in his body.

Uvogin: 11 (former member)

Uvogin is one of the first Phantom Troupe members that we meet in the series and the first to die. He is known to have the most physical strength out of any member in the group.

As such, his battle with Kurapika is intense and he is eventually defeated. He was one of the original members and participated in the genocide of the Kurta Clan.

Illumi Zoldyck: 11

Illumi Zoldyck

A major villain in the Hunter x Hunter series from the beginning, Illumi Zoldyck is the older brother of main character Killua and also a Hunter. He antagonizes his brother and eventually takes Uvogin’s spot in the Troupe. He is technically friends with Hisoka (supposedly) and yet they are enemies much of the time.

Kortopi: 12 (former member)

Kortopi is another mysterious member of the group. Not doing much in the series, he is most known for his odd appearance and ability to copy items. He seems to be an information gatherer for the team. He is later murdered by Hisoka after his loss to Chrollo at the same time as Shalnark.

Question: Who was Phantom Troupe Number 4 Before Hisoka?

Answer: The fourth-numbered member of the Phantom Troupe was Omokage prior to Hisoka joining. However, it is worth noting that there are some issues with this. For one, this happened in the Phantom Rouge movie that is not directly considered canon to the manga. As such, it is possible that you could believe that Omokage is not the actual member of the Troupe before Hisoka. That is completely valid but ultimately pointless at this time. It does not look like the manga has any intention of addressing this topic anytime soon so it is the best answer we have for now.

Question: Who is the Strongest in the Phantom Troupe?

Answer: The strongest member of the Phantom Troupe is none other than Chrollo, in my opinion. Though this has not been directly confirmed, I think it is hard to argue other than him. Of course, going into this reasoning is a bit spoilery. Chrollo is the leader of the group but this is not just for show. His Nen power is insanely amazing, allowing him to copy other Nen abilities and use them. This, coupled with his base power makes him the strongest in the group. The other person that you could make an argument for is Hisoka. Or, well, he could have been the strongest member when he was part of the Troupe. However, there is evidence to suggest that Hisoka is second to Chrollo. His loss most recently in the manga in his long-awaited fight against Chrollo makes it clear who the stronger member is right now.

Question: Who is Number 2 in the Phantom Troupe?

Answer: This question could be taken in two different ways. It could be seen as wondering who has the number 2 as their placement in the Troupe or who is the second in charge in the group. When it comes to the person who holds the number 2 position, that is Feitan Portor. Feitan is numbered two. Ironically, he is also the same answer to the other side of the question. He is formerly the interim leader for the group when Chrollo is not around. As such, if there is anyone who would be considered next in charge, it is Feitan. Now, if we are talking about the second most powerful member of the Troupe, that will obviously go to Hisoka. Illumi is another strong member but I think that Hisoka would defeat him in battle.

The Hunter x Hunter Phantom Troupe plays a significant role in the series. However, it is worth noting that this organization is just one part of the manga and anime. There is still so much more to this series beyond just these few characters.

As such, we have created a general Hunter x Hunter characters guide that you should check out. It includes details on not just the Phantom Troupe but all of the other main and supporting characters you should know about. Be sure to give it a read.

Chrollo Lulcifer, Illumi Zoldyck from Hunter x Hunter

Hunter X Hunter: Phantom Troupe Members Ranked by Strength: Chrollo, Illumi & More

By Ishika Mishra

The infamous group of thieves and criminals, the Phantom Troupe , is composed of Nen users. Mighty and intimidating, these Nen users play an important role in the series Hunter x Hunter. The strongest Phantom Troupe members in Hunter x Hunter gain their status due to their strengths and abilities, which we will dissect in this article.

Shedding light on the strengths they display in the anime and manga series, ComingSoon attempts to rank the top four of these formidable characters based on the power and strength they exhibit. Though such a ranking is highly subjective based on personal favorites, there are certain names amongst the Phantom Troupe members that can not go unnoticed.

Chrollo Lucilfer

The enigmatic leader of the Phantom Troupe, Chrollo Lucilfer , prioritizes his team’s collective survival above his own well-being, proving his leadership qualities. He is a masterful fighter who exhibits his strength mainly when he confronts enemies like Silva and Zeno Zoldyck. As he navigates through a complex network of challenges, Chrollo remains a master of speed and precision, displaying a freestyle approach in his combat.

Moreover, Chrollo uses his intelligence as an important weapon to manipulate his opponents. So much so, that he exploits their vulnerability and uses it against them, like a true antagonist. Additionally, he has a complex Nen type with all five categories combined, thereby giving him an edge over other formidable characters. He has a unique standing in the Hunter x Hunter universe, making him one of the best and most powerful characters in the series.

Illumi Zoldyck

Silva and Kikyo’s eldest born, Illumi, bears the mantle of a Hunter and hails from the intimidating Zoldyck family. He has it all, from power and influence to wealth, owing to his family’s legacy. Growing up, he received extensive training in the skill of assassination, and his overall Nen proficiency makes him stand out. Hisoka rated his strength and Nen proficiency at 95 on 100, making him one of the strongest Phantom Troupe members in Hunter x Hunter.

Additionally, Illumi can poison others and boasts the ability to withstand electricity. Moreover, his agility and physical prowess are off the charts, making him a force to reckon with. He shows fine combat skills along with the ability to disguise, as he does when he mimics Gittarackur. Besides, he can also manipulate his body and is really intelligent. All of this, and more, stand as a testament to Illumi’s status as one of the strongest in the series.

Hisoka Morow

Both an antagonist and an ally, Hisoka Morow has a dynamic role to play in the series. He is also called “Grim Reaper” and is a former member of the Phantom Troupe. Hisoka’s undeniable strength and outstanding intellect make his character one of the central ones in major story arcs in the series. Besides having extraordinary physical strength, he also possesses great reflexes and speed. Moreover, he can bear extreme pain and is resilient to a supernatural extent, adding complexity to his character.

Furthermore, he employs Transmutation, a Nen ability that helps him wield skills like Bungee Gum and Texture Surprise. These techniques make him versatile and let him change his appearance by attaching his aura to various surfaces. Unsurprisingly, he is one of the most powerful members of the Phantom Troupe and also an antagonist in the series.

Uvogin comes with a mysterious background because of his birth in Meteor City. However, his enigmatic character does not overshadow his immense physical strength and his preference for raw power above martial arts. His skin seems impenetrable, allowing him to fight fiercely without worrying about bullets and other advanced weapons like anti-tank rockets.

This Phantom Troupe member has mastery over Nen with an Enhancer specialization, which multiplies his already durable character. As such, his electro-shock wings, for example, cause significant harm to his opponent. Moreover, he has a simple fighting style, with his major attacks consisting of blows. But his resilience makes him stand out among the greatest characters in the series.

Chrollo 2011 Design 1

Chrollo's 2011 anime adaptation design

Chrollo's 1999 anime adaptation design

Chap 106 - Chrollo full body appearance

Chrollo's manga appearance

Chrollo is a young man with black hair and grey eyes. Two of his distinguishing features are the cross-shaped tattoo on his forehead and a pair of orb-shaped earrings. He is usually seen wearing a dark purple coat that has white fur on the collar and wrists, unbuttoned to reveal his muscular physique. The coat is imprinted with a golden St. Peter's Cross on the back.

Prior to the foundation of the Phantom Troupe , Chrollo neither wore his trademark coat nor combed back his hair. When he approached Neon Nostrade to steal her Nen ability , he wore a blue blazer with his hair hanging down naturally and his cross tattoo hidden beneath a thick layer of wrappings. His spider tattoo has yet to be revealed, but the 1999 anime adaptation placed it on his right arm. [7]

Personality

43 - Chrollo talking to Uvogin

Chrollo remaining calm in a tense situation

Chrollo is calm, intelligent, and charismatic, as he seems to be a born leader and able to hold the Troupe together despite the volatile personalities of its members. While he is a very capable strategist, Chrollo is also very confident in his own fighting abilities as well as in those of the other members of the Spider . He always has at least two people with him, which is why Hisoka found it so difficult to fight him. [8] After he has admired the items that he targeted and acquired, Chrollo sells them all. [9] It is also stated that Chrollo likes antique books. [3]

56 - Chrollo reaction

Chrollo reacting to Gon’s question about his motives

Unflinching and unshakable, he is also an observer of human nature. Gon 's hostility toward the Troupe led Chrollo to reflect upon the nature of himself and his actions. [10] Additionally, when fighting Hisoka, who refused to back down even after seeing the extent of his abilities, Chrollo expressed a fascination for the inner workings of human beings. However, by his own claim, he sees no difference between a puppet and a person. [11]

Chrollo shows no fear of his own death, even anticipating it. Melody stated that his heartbeat sounded as if he was happy living alongside death. To Chrollo, the Troupe is more important than his own life. [12] He once stated that the survival of the group comes before the well-being of the leader, stressing that the head of the Spider is just another limb that can be sacrificed for the survival of the whole. [13] In order to prevent their negative fortunes from coming true, Chrollo ordered the Troupe members to stay close and to assist one another. [10] The only people Chrollo seems to care about are his fellow Troupe members. When he reads his fortune written by Neon which alludes to Uvogin 's death, he cries for him. Later on, he orchestrates a massacre of Mafia members as a requiem to his fallen comrade. [14] [15] After the deaths of Kortopi and Shalnark at the hands of Hisoka, Chrollo appears visibly distraught [16] and furious, [17] vowing to kill him as soon as he sees him. [4]

51 - Chrollo smiling

Chrollo changing his demeanor around Neon

Like the other Troupe members, Chrollo is cold-blooded and not above inhuman mass murder, most notably when they brutally massacred the Kurta Clan . In addition, his use of Indoor Fish on an assassin reflects his apathetic nature towards his enemies. There is also an implied hostility between Chrollo and Silva Zoldyck , most likely stemming from their previous encounter after Silva's killing of a Troupe member. [18] [19]

Chrollo is a skilled actor and quite manipulative, as shown when he met Neon Nostrade and "befriended" her to steal her fortune-telling ability. During that time, he presented himself as an amiable and helpful man, always enthusiastic and smiling, who also displayed curiosity. However, Chrollo only intended to learn about Neon's ability to fulfill one of the conditions needed to steal it. [14] [1]

A young Chrollo and Pakunoda

Young Chrollo expressing his adoration for Pakunoda

Chrollo is shown to have been emotional, caring, and bright as a child. He also always brought fresh flowers for the graves of children in church. Father Lisores comments to a Meteor City elder that he sees much promise in Chrollo because of his spirit and original ideas. [20]

Chap 395 - Young Chrollo

Chrollo in his youth

Chrollo originated from Meteor City , a junkyard city inhabited by outcasts. People who live there do not exist in any official records, and the existence of the city itself is known to a very few people. [21]

One day, Chrollo, who was about eleven years old, along with Franklin and Shalnark , found a new VHS tape in one of the garbage dumps. They started running with the tape, tossing it from hand to hand, which Machi saw. She then reports this to Uvogin , who gets in the boys' way. Uvo knocks out Shalnark as Franklin returns the tape to Chrollo, who escapes using the opportunity. Then, Phinks and Feitan cut off Chrollo's path on a motorbike. Chrollo gives them back the tape, but it turns out that he outsmarted them, and it was a Gelman language course tape found sometime earlier, and he hid the newly found tape under his shirt. Chrollo then goes to the church, where he has a short conversation with Father Lisores . After that, he visits the AV room, where he meets Pakunoda . Together, they play the tape in a VCR, which is a recording of the movie Power Cleaners in a foreign language. Chrollo decides to translate the film's content and create dubbing with his friends. He asks Pakunoda to talk Sheila and Sarasa into it. After a short while, Chrollo manages to finish the script, after which the four friends start recording. [20]

Chap 396 - Chrollo's performance

Chrollo terrifying the audience with his villain performance

After the recordings are finished, the prepared film is shown in the church. Lots of kids from Meteor City show up. The first to approach Chrollo, even before the show, is Uvogin. He tells him that they need to talk after the show is over. Phinks then arrives with dubious intentions, but is distracted by Sarasa. Sheila notes that as long as Chrollo is protected by the youngest of the children, Sarasa, he is safe. The show begins. All the children seem to be delighted, but at some point the sound in the recording stops working. While Uvogin makes fun of Chrollo's problems, Chrollo decides to do live voices, standing on stage and using a microphone. Pakunoda, Sheila and Sarasa join him. On stage, Chrollo imitates a multitude of characters, not only vocally but also physically. The children are most impressed by the role of the villain, in which Lucilfer's face shows unprecedented emotions. After the show ends, Uvogin is delighted and asks for a chance to voice the villain in the next taping. The children form a dubbing group consisting of: Chrollo, Uvogin, Sheila, Sarasa, Nobunaga, Feitan, Phinks, Shalnark, Pakunoda, and Franklin. Machi is also with them, but she doesn't like any of the available roles. In the near future, the group is tightening ties and spending time rehearsing, writing scripts and presenting new episodes on stage. We see them after some time when the group tries to get Machi to participate in the show, but she only considers the role of the villain. The group tries to find a solution, but they notice that they don't have enough actors and they should look for new ones. They also consider a name for themselves and choose the name "Troupe". They are going to add a second term to it, but they are not sure what it should be yet. Chrollo and Uvogin have a short chat in which the latter states that he has found his purpose, which is to travel with Chrollo, putting on shows, and playing the role of the best villain in the world. [22]

Chap 397 - Chrollo and Uvogin seeing Sarasa

Chrollo and Uvogin seeing Sarasa's body

One day, Sarasa didn't show up at the show. The troupe learned that she had not been seen since yesterday. Most of the children watching the Troupe's shows decided to help with the search. Chrollo paired up with Uvogin, and after a long time of searching, they came up with the idea of checking out the Uga Forest . They gathered the other members and they all went into the forest together. There they found the scene of the crime, the instruments of torture, a note left behind and a sack hanging from a tree. Chrollo was the only one who could read the contents of the note, but he chose not to share it with the others. When Uvogin took the sack from the tree, Chrollo decided to check the contents. It turned out that Sarasa's destroyed body was inside. Some time later, Chrollo attends Sarasa's funeral, after which he talks to Uvogin about their future. He asks him to wait three years, in which he will be able to get the necessary funds to carry out his plan, which consists in creating a website that brings together criminals. During the conversation, they are joined by the other members of the Troupe, except for Sheila, who decides to leave the group. Each of the other members chose Chrollo as the leader of the group, which will be formed in three years. [23]

HxH2011 EP57 Troupe Founding IMG5

Chrollo founding the Phantom Troupe

Around three years later, being about the age of fourteen, Chrollo founded the Phantom Troupe , along with Franklin, Uvogin, Machi, Pakunoda, Feitan, Nobunaga, [13] and Shalnark . [23]

Then, sometime later, Chrollo fought Silva Zoldyck before their encounter in the Cemetery Building . It is unknown when and what the exact circumstances were. [19] He presumably took part in the massacre of the Kurta Clan . [24]

Heavens Arena arc

After she heals his wounds at Heavens Arena , Machi tells Hisoka that all Troupe members must meet in Yorknew City by noon on August 30 th . He asks if Chrollo will be present, and Machi assumes that he will be, adding that it may be their biggest mission yet and that Chrollo may punish him personally if he doesn’t show. [25]

Yorknew City arc

Spiders Reunited

The Spiders reunited

Chrollo is first seen at a meeting of the Phantom Troupe in an abandoned area of Yorknew City on August 31 st . He orders the Troupe to steal all the items at the Underground Auction and to eliminate anyone who gets in their way. [3]

On the evening of September 1 st , he, Phinks , Kortopi , Bonolenov , Pakunoda , and Hisoka stay behind while the other seven members infiltrate the Cemetery Building where the auction is being held and kill all the Mafia members and guests in the auditorium, [26] only to discover that the vault had been emptied and the items relocated just a few hours before their arrival. As they escape in a hot-air balloon, Uvogin calls Chrollo and suspects that there’s a traitor within the Troupe. Chrollo reasons with him that an informant exists, but this person is not among them. After learning about the man named Owl who removed the auction items, he then tells Uvogin and others to cause a big disturbance to lure out the other Shadow Beasts . [27]

Following Chrollo’s order, Uvogin massacres the Mafia and four Shadow Beasts in the Gordeau Desert , [28] but he is captured by Kurapika shortly afterwards. Five other Troupe members immediately give chase until they are stopped on the way by the remaining Shadow Beasts. [29] They kill all of them except Owl, who they capture and torture to retrieve the auction items. Near midnight, they find where Uvogin is being held captive and free him after killing Dalzollene , the head bodyguard of the Nostrade Family . [8] Uvogin, however, insists on finding the chain user and has the others tell Chrollo that he won’t return until he settles the score. [9] After tracking down Kurapika and arranging a duel, Uvogin eventually meets his demise in the Gordeau Desert in the early hours of September 2 nd . Back at the Troupe’s hideout, Chrollo surmises that the chain user is either a Manipulator or Conjurer and that Uvogin is likely to lose against them in a one-on-one fight. He tells the other members that if Uvogin doesn’t return by dawn, they will change their plans. [6]

Chrollo cries after reading his prophecy

Chrollo crying after reading his fortune

On September 3 rd , thanks to a picture of her that was just uploaded on the Hunter Website , Chrollo finds and approaches Neon Nostrade , who has slipped away from her bodyguards to attend the rescheduled Underground Auction without her father ’s knowledge. [30] After helping her to get into the Cemetery Building, he asks her to tell his fortune, which she gladly does. [1] Upon reading it, he cries once he sees the allusion to Uvogin's death. After the two talk and make their way to the auction, he knocks Neon unconscious with a swift blow to the back of her neck in order to get the Mafia members to call an ambulance. He then kills multiple assassins with ease [14] and dedicates the requiem to Uvogin while his other comrades massacre the police and 2,000 Mafia members guarding the building. [15] [31]

HxH2011 EP53 Chrollo after the Zoldyck fight

Chrollo after his fight against the Zoldycks

As the Troupe’s massacre continues outside, Chrollo is cornered in the building’s basement by Silva and Zeno Zoldyck . [31] Noticing how skilled Zeno is, Chrollo fights with the intention of stealing his abilities. However, Zeno sees through him and has him pinned against the wall while Silva throws two huge aura spheres at them, triggering an enormous explosion. [19] Silva's transmitter suddenly rings, and Illumi informs him that the Ten Dons have been eliminated and that Chrollo was the one who hired him. Since Silva and Zeno were hired by the Ten Dons, they tell Chrollo that he is no longer their target now that the Dons are dead, leaving Chrollo alone and exhausted as he tells himself that he wouldn’t have been able to steal Zeno’s ability. Chrollo then contacts the other members and tells them to forget about the ambulance and that they will go ahead as planned. [32]

Chrollo's Death

Chrollo's fake corpse

The Troupe then makes use of Kortopi 's ability to fool the Mafia with fake corpses of five members, [33] taking over the rescheduled Underground Auction held on the building’s 10 th floor and selling the copies of the items made by Kortopi’s ability. [32] After that, he and the other members return to their hideout and celebrate their successful plan. [33] The following day, Chrollo tells the Troupe that they will leave Yorknew that night once they retrieve the rest of the loot, but Nobunaga insists on finding the chain user. [21] In order to persuade Nobunaga, he uses Neon’s stolen ability to tell the fortunes of Nobunaga and the other members, and they learn that five more of them will die in the next two weeks if they keep chasing after the chain user. They then intend to leave Yorknew to avoid the fortunes, [24] but Hisoka alters his own with his Texture Surprise so that the Troupe will stay in Yorknew and he will have the chance to fight Chrollo. [34]

Chrollo, Machi, and Shizuku confronting their pursuers

Chrollo, Machi, and Shizuku confronting their pursuers

Later, Chrollo is able to deduce that Kurapika is one of Neon's bodyguards and a surviving member of the Kurta Clan . Thanks to a pair of copied Scarlet Eyes that they sold to the Nostrade Family the night before, they determine that he and the other bodyguards are staying at the Hotel Beitacle . Chrollo then tells Kortopi, Machi, Nobunaga, Pakunoda, and Shizuku to go with him to the hotel. [35] [36] On the way, noticing that they are being followed by two people, he tells Kortopi, Nobunaga and Pakunoda to go ahead while he, Machi, and Shizuku stay behind. They then capture Gon and Killua again. [10] Meanwhile, Pakunoda and the other two are able to learn Kurapika's name and face after capturing and killing Squala . [37]

Chrollo, Machi, and Shizuku take the two boys to the hotel [37] and meet up with Pakunoda's group in the lobby. He tells Pakunoda to check their memories again, but before she can reveal what she has learned about Kurapika, a power outage suddenly happens, allowing Gon and Killua to make an escape attempt. However, Machi and Nobunaga easily recapture them despite the total darkness. Shizuku is then the first one to notice that Chrollo is missing. [38]

HxH2011 EP57 Chrollo captured and Kurapika stating his demands

Chrollo remaining calm even after being captured

After the others also realize that Chrollo is missing, Pakunoda reads a note left by Kurapika that threatens Chrollo's life if she reveals Gon and Killua's memories to the others. Nobunaga tells her to stay quiet while they wait for the chain user's call, stressing that they need to keep the two boys as hostages. In a flashback, Pakunoda remembers the formation of the Troupe in Meteor City where Chrollo stressed the importance of the Spider as a whole, telling them to never forget that someone else will take over if he dies. Back in the present, Pakunoda considers betraying the Spider to save Chrollo and wonders what Chrollo would do, with Nobunaga calling Phinks and telling him to hurry after revealing that Chrollo was captured. Sitting chained in the seat next to Kurapika as Leorio drives, Chrollo says that he didn't think the chain user would be a woman, but Kurapika quickly removes his wig and warns him that his words could be his last. Chrollo then reminds Kurapika that he can't kill him since he left his friends behind. He then points out that the encounter wasn't even mentioned in his fortune, which means that it's entirely insignificant, causing Kurapika to fly into a rage. [13]

Phinks, Feitan , and Shalnark soon arrive at the hotel. The Troupe members receive a call from Kurapika, who tells them not to follow him, not to hurt the hostages, and to give the phone to Pakunoda. He then tells Pakunoda to go to Lingon Airport alone to negotiate the terms of a hostage exchange and that the other members have to return to their hideout. Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark try to follow Pakunoda, but Nobunaga stops them for fear that Chrollo will be killed, leading to a heated quarrel between the two groups, with Feitan stressing that Chrollo would agree with their decision to follow her and that Nobunaga’s way of thinking is an insult to the Spiders. The quarrel is eventually settled, and the Troupe members agree to return to the hideout. [39]

Meanwhile, after Chrollo again provokes Kurapika, the latter punches him in the face multiple times before Leorio and Melody calm him down. As Chrollo stresses that he’s worthless as a hostage, Melody listens to his heartbeat and says that he enjoys the fact that death is always near him. Kurapika asks if he was the Troupe’s leader five years earlier when they massacred the Kurta Clan, but Chrollo stays silent as Kurapika readies his Judgment Chain . Chrollo then asks if he used the chain to kill Uvogin, also asking about his final words. He again refuses to answer Kurapika, who feels powerless about having to keep Chrollo alive. As Kurapika backs down and calls back Pakunoda, Chrollo realizes that Kurapika will prioritize his friends over his mission, hoping that Pakunoda will bring the others with her to the meeting. [12]

When Kurapika meets Pakunoda aboard an airship, he uses his Judgment Chain on both her and Chrollo, setting two conditions for each of them (with Chrollo forbidden from using Nen and from communicating with other Troupe members). He then tells her to return to the airport with the hostages by midnight and to not tell the others where she is going. After Pakunoda agrees and returns to the hideout, she tells the others about the exchange and that she is leaving with just the two boys. Phinks becomes so angry that he wants to get rid of them and then go after the chain user, [40] but Machi and Kortopi side with Pakunoda. They prepare to confront Phinks and Feitan, who think that she and the others are being manipulated by the chain user, but Gon interrupts their quarrel and emphasizes that Pakunoda just wants to save their leader. Phinks finally agrees to let Pakunoda leave after Franklin tells him that if they all keep fighting, it will be the end of the Troupe. [41]

ChrolloEast

Chrollo heading east after losing the ability to use Nen

Just before the exchange, Hisoka unexpectedly appears and threatens to kill Gon and Killua if he cannot board Pakunoda’s airship. Kurapika has no choice but to let him go to the exchange site with them. After the exchange is successful, Kurapika looks down on Chrollo and hopes that he realizes what it’s like to have all his support systems taken away. Standing opposite him, Hisoka happily challenges Chrollo to a fight. [41] He then reveals that he has never been a true member of the Troupe, removing the fake Spider tattoo from his back, and points out that it won’t be considered in-fighting now. Chrollo laughs and tells Hisoka that he isn’t worth fighting since Kurapika stabbed him with his Judgment Chain and rendered him unable to use Nen. Losing interest, Hisoka quickly leaves and tells Pakunoda that he isn’t interested in broken toys, assuring her that Chrollo isn’t in danger from him anymore. As Pakunoda sacrifices herself to give her memories to the founding members of the Troupe, Chrollo stands alone at the exchange site and looks toward the east. [42]

Greed Island arc

Chrollo awaits

Chrollo waiting for the Troupe to find the Nen exorcist on Greed Island

After Phinks and Feitan encounter Gon and Killua at the Southernpiece Auction , the former tells them that the Troupe can’t kill the chain user since Nen doesn’t necessarily disappear after death and sometimes seek out the object of the user’s hatred. He then worries about Chrollo’s safety, but Feitan stops him before he can say anything else aloud. Phinks assures himself that Chrollo is looking for a skilled exorcist and that they just need to wait for him to return. [43]

After seeing Chrollo’s name in his Greed Island book, Shalnark points out to the other Troupe members that the island is located due east of Yorknew. As they all remember the connection to his fortune, Shalnark guesses that Chrollo traveled there by sea and was teleported away by Razor , but because he can’t use Nen, he hired someone to play the game for him and to use his name as a message to them. As Shalnark adds that the Nen exorcist is on the island, Hisoka reveals himself and says that while Chrollo hired him, it was his own idea to use his name. Franklin guesses that Hisoka’s reward for helping Chrollo is a duel, and Shalnark assures the others that it’s only a matter of time until Chrollo returns. At that point, a smiling Chrollo is seen at an undisclosed location sitting in front of a JoyStation Console . Killua calls Kurapika and tells him about the situation, but Kurapika assures him that his Nen has not been removed from Chrollo. After Kurapika hangs up, he tells himself that while it isn’t Chrollo, it’s not unrelated. [44]

Finally locating the exorcist Abengane with the help of their new member Kalluto , the Troupe has Hisoka make a deal with him so that he will remove Kurapika's Judgment Chain from Chrollo's heart. [45]

Chimera Ant arc

Chrollo is seen reading an issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump as Hisoka and Abengane approach him. [46]

After several Troupe members defeat multiple Chimera Ants including Zazan near Meteor City, Nobunaga texts Shalnark and asks for their help, with Phinks left disappointed that it wasn’t Chrollo contacting them. [47]

13 th Hunter Chairman Election arc

When Hisoka is left confused by Illumi’s mention of Ants and Netero ’s death, Illumi tells him that he missed a lot while he was chasing after Chrollo, adding that he might have had the chance to fight the Ants or Netero otherwise. [48]

Succession Contest arc

Chap 351 - Chrollo's Sun and Moon

Chrollo revealing one of his new abilities

Chrollo finally decides to accept Hisoka's challenge and fights him at Heavens Arena , where he is a Floor Master . The two agree that the chase has become boring and start a match to the death. As Chrollo takes control of the referee with Shalnark's ability, Hisoka realizes that Chrollo was avoiding him after the exorcism so that he could collect abilities for the fight. Chrollo then uses the referee as a decoy to perform a feint and catch Hisoka off guard. After a brief but furious exchange of blows which sees Hisoka strictly on the defensive, Hisoka kills the referee, but Chrollo reveals two more abilities: an explosive mark and a bookmark that allows him to use a stolen ability without having to hold his book open. The two discuss Chrollo's new abilities, and he declares that he will show Hisoka three more, adding that Hisoka should be honored that he will be using the most abilities it has ever taken him to kill someone. [5]

Chap 353 - Chrollo lands a hit

Chrollo kicking Hisoka into the floor

Chrollo then introduces Hisoka to another ability, Order Stamp . After putting the bookmark on that page, he creates a copy of the referee's body with Kortopi's Nen ability and uses the stamp to make it attack Hisoka. However, thanks to Chrollo's explanation, Hisoka easily deactivates Order Stamp by beheading the puppet. Chrollo finally shows the last ability he has prepared, Convert Hands . Much to Hisoka's annoyance, before the two can trade blows again, Chrollo reveals that one of his abilities belongs to someone who is already dead. He is surprised that Hisoka instantly realizes it is because the user's Nen has become stronger after his death. The ability in question is The Sun and Moon , which Chrollo has acquired in Meteor City. Thanks to the creator's resolve, once affixed, the marks will never disappear unless they explode. After finishing his explanation, Chrollo states that his victory is certain and asks Hisoka if he still wants to continue. When Hisoka consents, Chrollo thinks to himself that humans are fascinating creatures. After Chrollo runs away from Hisoka, the two end up in the audience, two of whom Chrollo manipulates to attack Hisoka while disguising himself with Convert Hands . [11]

While Hisoka kills the manipulated spectators, Chrollo steals the clothes of another and puts them on, also retrieving the two antennae. He then places the bookmark on Gallery Fake and, after creating multiple copies with it, opens his book to Order Stamp in order to have around thirty of them attack Hisoka. As Hisoka is forced to retreat, Chrollo uses the opening to get behind him, switching the type of attack at the last second to trick him, causing Hisoka to fall into the crowd of puppets. While Hisoka fights them off, Chrollo damages him with a hit-and-run tactic, striking from his blind spots and blending in with the crowd. When Hisoka attempts to counter his next ambush attack with Bungee Gum , Chrollo dodges and kicks him to the ground, confidently saying that he saw it coming. However, he is hit by a second projectile that Hisoka had prepared. [49]

Hisoka lands one more hit with the other projectile, but Chrollo manages to keep hold of the book and retreat into the audience. Unbeknownst to Hisoka, Chrollo uses this chance to identify the puppet whose head Hisoka had taken and places a fully charged plus symbol on its body. [50] While Hisoka disables his puppets, Chrollo controls one spectator with Black Voice and gives him his appearance with Convert Hands . Hisoka finds the substitute and gives chase, killing it. [51] Chrollo then steals the announcer's microphone and orders all his puppets to attack Hisoka. While Hisoka destroys them, Chrollo uses his phone to order a controlled human on whom he has affixed a fully charged symbol to trigger an explosion that seriously injures Hisoka's left hand. [52]

Chap 356 - Chrollo overwhelming Hisoka

Chrollo overwhelming Hisoka

Chrollo smiles with satisfaction at the explosion and orders some puppets on whose hands he has affixed fully powered symbols to climb to the second floor and, when Hisoka is in range, to blow themselves up. The blast wounds Hisoka and severs one of his legs. When Hisoka tries to break his fall by using Bungee Gum , Chrollo throws two spectators at him, causing him to fall back down into the ring filled with puppets. As Hisoka realizes that he may die and prepares to try something, the puppets swarm around him and cause an enormous explosion. [50]

After the fight, Chrollo tasks Shalnark, Kortopi, and Machi with verifying Hisoka's death. Meanwhile, the media report that one of the combatants may have used a bomb that killed Hisoka along with many spectators. Chrollo is then seen on the phone with Shalnark where the two discuss plans to board the ship headed to the New Continent and to steal the treasure of Kakin ’s royalty. Chrollo then asks Shalnark about returning his cell phone, but points out that there are no antennae. Shalnark says that he is okay for now, and Chrollo replies that he will give it to them on board the ship, with Shalnark looking forward to the entire Troupe getting back together. [53]

Chrollo's first appearance in Black Whale

Chrollo distraught after the deaths of Kortopi and Shalnark

In a crowded area on Tier 5 of the Black Whale , a man steps on a cockroach and says that they seem to find their way everywhere. He notices the dejected expression of a person sitting opposite him and says that he looks like he’s about to kill someone. After the person is revealed to be Chrollo, the man adds that he probably endured a lot to get onboard and tells him to forget about all his ties to the old world. However, Chrollo replies that it would be difficult since ties are meant to be severed, not forgotten. [16]

On the second day of the Black Whale’s voyage, Chrollo meets up with Machi at a crowded market in Tier 5. Both of them want to be the one to kill Hisoka after the deaths of Kortopi and Shalnark. Machi suggests flipping a coin, but Chrollo reminds her that coins are for disputes between two individuals, stressing that every member of the Troupe (including himself) wants to kill Hisoka. He then tells her to find Hisoka and guarantees that he’s somewhere on the ship. [17]

Chap 377 - Phantom Troupe members

The current Troupe members gathering together

All current members of the Phantom Troupe gather together in the crowded central dining hall , where Chrollo hears the reports about their fruitless search for Hisoka. They conclude that Hisoka is not in Tier 5, though the upper tiers are controlled by two other Mafia families. Chrollo encourages their newest member, Illumi, to introduce himself. He shares that he and Hisoka once had a give-and-take relationship, but Hisoka has now requested that he join the Troupe and have Hisoka as his assassination target. A group from the Cha-R Family then interrupts their meeting, with the leader rudely asking them to move from their table. Chrollo refuses and asks them to find somewhere else instead. The Mafia leader stops his subordinates from initiating a fight and identifies Chrollo and the others as the Phantom Troupe. According to the leader, the Troupe's rampage in Yorknew City allowed them easier access to the New Continent . The leader further orders the Troupe to do their business elsewhere. Before leaving, Chrollo tells him that they are looking for someone over 190 cm with an unpleasant air about him. The leader suggests that they look at the Royal Army 's passenger list, but adds that it will be a hard task since the upper tiers require tickets. He offers him a free pass if they join the Cha-R Family, but Chrollo politely declines. Instead, he asks about gaining access to Tier 1 , which prompts the Mafia leader to quickly dismiss his cockiness, telling him to get lost. [4]

Chap 377 - Spiders moving out

The Spiders splitting up to find Hisoka

As the members walk away, Phinks muses that the leader showed his hand when Chrollo mentioned Tier 1, implying that there might be treasure hidden there. Chrollo stresses that they need to find Hisoka before going after any treasure. With the information they have all gathered, he orders the Troupe to bring him Hisoka's head, after which they can celebrate. Soon after the group splits up, Shizuku and Bonolenov ask Chrollo if he wants to team up. Chrollo agrees to work with them, but stresses that he will be the one to kill Hisoka. Shizuku points out that both her and Bonolenov's abilities don't work well against Hisoka's Bungee Gum , and Chrollo replies that he plans to attack Hisoka as soon as he sees him. Shizuku says that she will look for Hisoka in disguise, and Bonolenov says that he will transform rather than disguise himself, explaining that he will use his Battle Cantabile: Metamorphosen . He adds that while he can take many forms, he isn't strategic enough to come up with a plan, asking Chrollo for help. After Chrollo gives Bonolenov advice on how to use his ability, Shizuku asks Chrollo if he can read their fortunes again, hoping that it will give them some clues. However, Chrollo reveals that the ability disappeared from his book, and after realizing the implication, Shizuku likens Chrollo's book to the Death Note . As Chrollo stays silent, Bonolenov tells Shizuku that she keeps thinking that. [4]

The three are last seen making their way from Tier 5 to Tier 4 through the central passage. [54] On the seventh day of the voyage, after Phinks, Nobunaga, and Feitan discuss the current situation with Ken'i and Tajao , Phinks asks them to verify Morena 's location while they contact the other Troupe members and hunt down the hit man . [55] On the tenth day of the voyage, after Onior confirms with Hinrigh that Hisoka isn't in Tier 4, he says that he can permit the Spiders to search that tier. [56]

Chrollo's Benz knife 2011

Chrollo holding a Ben's knife

Ben's Knife: Chrollo is in possession of one of the famous Ben's knives , forged in Delon 's central period. It has a black hilt with a slightly curved knuckle guard, similar to a D guard. Near the guard, the blade branches in two segments. The central one is the longest. It ends up with a sharp arrow point. The second segment is curved and serves as the edge of the knife. Its tip almost touches one of the central segments. A third segment acts as the back of the blade. It is connected to the others through two horizontal bars. Ben's knives are renowned for their exceptional sharpness, which allowed Chrollo to cut Silva's skin, a feat that led the assassin to recognize the weapon’s quality. Silva also judged from the blade’s shape that it was toxic. The toxin was so powerful, in fact, that 0.1 mg could paralyze a whale. Chrollo concealed it in a curved scabbard under his clothes. [31]

Antennae: Chrollo carried Shalnark’s two antennae with him to activate Black Voice . [5] According to Hisoka , a fishing line may have been used to retrieve them. [49] However, both were lost/destroyed during the fight. [51] [53]

Cell Phone: In order to use Shalnark's ability, Chrollo also borrowed his special bat-shaped telephone, [5] which was still in Chrollo’s possession at the time of Shalnark’s death. [53]

Abilities & Powers

As the leader of the Phantom Troupe , Chrollo is an exceptional fighter and revered as the strongest by most of its members. Machi ranks him cleanly above Hisoka , [57] who has consistently desired a fight against the Troupe's leader far more than any other Spider. [34] However, Chrollo tends to hold back if his opponent possesses an ability that interests him so that he can steal it. [19] He was able to fight against Silva and Zeno Zoldyck simultaneously, both extremely proficient assassins, without leaving any openings for the former to exploit, though he was unable to cause significant damage to either of them and was ultimately saved by Illumi fulfilling his contract. [32] In the past, he survived a confrontation with Silva, [19] and Zeno stated that he would surely win if Chrollo fought to steal his ability, but that his victory would be less certain if Chrollo were serious about killing him. [19] His greatest achievement on the battlefield may be his victory at Heavens Arena against Hisoka, another extremely powerful Nen user who at the time had no record of past defeats or even proof of struggling in fights. [53]

Chrollo’s fighting style is adaptable and combines speed with deadly precision. He is able to kill skilled assassins with just a pen, sometimes even remaining concealed with Zetsu , [31] not even using Nen as a result. Chrollo is also endowed with extraordinary strategic abilities as well as astounding strength of mind and willpower, even by the standards of the Troupe.

Preternatural Perception: While chased by Kurapika and Gon , Chrollo was able to sense that he was being followed as well as the direction from which his pursuers were approaching, whereas five other Troupe members failed to detect anything unusual even after he warned them. [10]

Enhanced Strength: Chrollo ranked seventh in arm-wrestling among the Troupe. [6] However, his rank is excellent given that Specialists are the weakest in employing Enhancement skills. He is nonetheless able to pierce through skulls with an ordinary pen. [14] He is also capable of lifting adult males and throwing them over a distance of multiple meters using only one arm and while standing on top of a balcony. [50]

Chrollo dodging Zeno's strikes

Immense Speed and Reflexes: Chrollo was able to fight Silva and Zeno at the same time, avoiding or blocking their powerful attacks effectively. [31] According to Pakunoda , he would have no trouble dodging an attack lasting 0.2 seconds. [13] He landed a hand chop on the neck of Neon Nostrade that was so fast that neither the people in the hall nor people watching through the cameras (besides Assassin A who had to replay the surveillance footage) could detect his movement. [14] In his match against Hisoka, he was able to steal a person's clothes, put them on, create more than thirty puppets with Gallery Fake , and blend into the crowd again all in a brief period of time. [49]

Enhanced Agility: Chrollo can run on the sides of buildings, and easily jump horizontally from one to another. [10] He also deftly dodged many of Zeno's long-distance attacks while never losing sight of Silva and quickly recovered his balance the few times he was hit. [19] During his fight against Hisoka, he was able to dodge a fast-moving projectile while in mid-air. [49]

Genius-level Intellect: Despite his young age, Chrollo is the leader of the infamous Phantom Troupe. His plans usually go smoothly, and he has shown himself to be both knowledgeable and intuitive. He was able to trick the Mafia into thinking that he and several of his comrades had died. [33] Even when he was a child, he was proficient in at least three languages. [58]

Master Strategist: Chrollo is highly intelligent. He managed to predict part of the chain user’s strategy of vengeance, though he was ultimately outsmarted by both Kurapika and Hisoka. He has complete control over his emotions, as demonstrated when he was captured by Kurapika and managed to take notice of the latter's weakness (that he would prioritize his friends over his mission). In his fight against the Zoldycks, Chrollo focused on stealing Zeno's ability in the midst of combat and left no openings for Silva to exploit, proving himself to be an efficient multitasker and quick-thinker. [19] Before fighting Hisoka, Chrollo prepared a strategy that, by his claim, granted him a sure chance of victory, [11] and indeed Hisoka, despite being a genius in combat, while able to respond and hold his own for a period, managed to anticipate only one [49] of Chrollo's moves. [5] [11] [49]

Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Chrollo's defense is top-class. He managed to put up a good fight against the two Zoldycks, using his skills at unarmed combat almost exclusively to block and dodge. He managed to confront Zeno and avoid his attacks at the last second in order to prevent Silva from exploiting his openings, keeping an eye on him the whole time. While he was mainly forced on the defensive in the aforementioned fight, he has also shown incredible offensive abilities when he knocked Neon unconscious and took care of the other assassins hired by the Mafia. Assassin A noted that Chrollo’s chop against Neon was so fast that it would have beheaded her if not for the perfect control of his movement. [14] When Silva discovered Assassin D ’s corpse, he noted that he was killed with one strike from behind and that there was no signature of the killer’s bloodlust. [31] He also managed to fool Hisoka twice with a feint, inflicting considerable damage even while holding his book. [5] [49]

Proficient Weapon Specialist: Chrollo defeated and killed multiple skilled Nen users wielding just a normal pen. [14] He was able to injure Silva's arm with a Ben's knife (the sole injury he could inflict during the confrontation), demonstrating his skills with this type of weapon. [31]

Chrollo Fight Ready

Chrollo's aura

Chrollo is a Specialist . [31] His talent for Nen is judged prodigious not only for his age but even by the standards of masters in the discipline. His Zetsu was noted by Silva to be flawless, allowing him to sneak up on his opponent and kill them without leaving the faintest trace of bloodlust, [31] although Hisoka was able to sense it an instant on at least one occasion. [49] Like other skilled Nen users, he is capable of maintaining a state of Ten at all times. [4] His prolonged use of Ren in confrontations [31] [19] suggests that he can use Ken as well. He also has knowledge of Gyo . [10] The technique he relies on the most, however, appears to be Hatsu , with Chrollo proving to be extremely versatile in the technique. He has been able to employ numerous stolen abilities in battle to great effect, despite them using different Nen types , and has even utilized multiple Nen abilities simultaneously, in turn demonstrating his copious aura reserve. It is currently unknown whether this is entirely due to his skills, or if Skill Hunter allows him to mimic the proficiency of the ability’s original owner.

Although Chrollo ranked seventh in arm-wrestling among the Troupe. [6] it’s nevertheless impressive since Specialists are the weakest in employing Enhancement skills. Furthermore, his defensive usage of aura is so great that, despite fighting against both Silva and Zeno at the same time and enduring powerful blows, he took only relatively minor damage which did not impair his combat abilities, [31] [19] although he immediately understood that he would be unable to guard against Zeno's superior Gyo [19] and collapsed from exhaustion immediately after the end of the fight. [32]

Due to Kurapika's Judgment Chain , he was rendered unable to use Nen for a period of time. [40] After the exorcism was performed, he acquired new abilities for the purpose of fighting Hisoka. The creation of Double Face [5] and his explanation of The Sun and Moon [11] imply that he knows about loopholes and post-mortem Nen , respectively.

  • (To Uvogin) "I don't consider Judas to be a traitor. They say Judas sold Jesus over for 30 silver coins. How much would this traitor sell us out for? Think about it. What would he gain by selling us to the Mafia? Money? Fame? Status? Would that really gratify any one of us." [27]
  • (To Neon) "I believe that we have a soul. So I want to fulfill my dead friend 's wish... to wreak havoc." [14]
  • "Dear Uvo... can you hear this? We dedicate this requiem to you." [15]
  • (To Gon ) "You have a lot of hostility for someone who's surrendered." [10]
  • (To Gon ) "I don't know. It might be because they have nothing to do with me. When I'm asked like that, it's hard to answer. I don't much like to talk about my motives. But surprisingly... or rather, as I expected... the reason is the key to understanding myself..." [10]
  • (During the founding of the Troupe) "Together, we are the Spider. I'm its head, and you're the legs. The legs do what the head says. But there will be times when the legs are more important than the head. If I die, someone else will take over. My orders are of the utmost priority. My life is not. Be sure to make the right decision. I'm only a part of the Spider . What's important is the survival of the whole , not the individual." [13]
  • (To Kurapika) "You can't kill me. You left your precious friends behind. This wasn't even in my fortune. That means it wasn't worth mentioning. This situation is insignificant. " [13]
  • (To Kurapika) "Is that the chain you used to kill Uvo? What did he say to you before he died?" [12]
  • (To Hisoka) "Unlike Order Stamp ’s owner, the elder thought there wasn't much difference between humans and puppets. I tend to agree." [11]
  • (To Hisoka) "I'm not saying this as a challenge, but I'll win. I'm 100 percent sure." [11]
  • (To himself) "Humans... are so very... interesting." [11]
  • (To a Black Whale passenger) "Ties are to be severed... not forgotten." [16]
  • (To Machi) "Coins are for disputes between individuals. Everyone wants to kill him this time. Of course... that includes me...!" [17]
  • (To the Spiders) "We want to have a party, but there's no cake. We need a special order to place in the center of the table. When we get it, we'll get back together and dine at that table. Bring me Hisoka's head...!! " [4]
  • In the Hunter × Hunter - Sôshû-hen - Treasure Vol. 4 extra book cover, which precedes the most recent version given in Vol. 34, his surname is slightly different: " Quwrof Wrlccywrlfr ".
  • In the official English translation of Chapter 55 , Chrollo's name is written as " Chrolo ", and in Chapter 95 , his surname is written as " Lusilfer ", both of which were their first appearances.
  • It is unconfirmed when exactly Chrollo became a Floor Master at Heavens Arena. Since Hisoka allied himself with Kurapika because he did not know how to track down Chrollo outside of the Troupe's gatherings, [8] it seems plausible that Chrollo started competing at the Heavens Arena only after his exorcism.
  • The copies of a person created by Kortopi with Gallery Fake are identical to the original in every aspect, even when dissected. [21] However, when Chrollo used the ability, the beheaded copies released a small amount of clear fluid instead of blood. [11]
  • Currently, Chrollo has demonstrated usage of the highest number of individual Nen abilities. This remains the case even when the two abilities that he may have lost possession of following the original owners' deaths are excluded.
  • According to the "Hunter × Hunter Manual" section found in the Yu ☆ Yu ☆ Hakusho official character book (Shueisha Jump remix), * Chrollo's stats are:

Anime and Manga Differences

Kuroro Lucifer

1999 anime (left)/Manga (middle)/2011 anime (right)

  • In the 1999 anime adaptation, Chrollo has his spider tattoo, without a number, on his right arm. [7] In the manga, there is no tattoo visible, [33] and the 2011 anime adaptation has Chrollo’s arm still covered by his sleeve. [63]

Intertextuality and References

  • Chrollo's character draws on biblical motifs, specifically diabolical ones: the inverted cross on his coat is often associated with Satanism , and his surname is obviously derived from Lucifer .
  • both are the leaders of their gang;
  • both are the smartest and most polite of their gang;
  • both have religious references. Sensui is known as the Dark Angel, Chrollo has a cross on his forehead, an inverted cross on his coat, and a last name very close to Lucifer;
  • and in the manga and the 2011 anime adaptation, a young Chrollo is seen playing with a videotape, possibly a reference to the Chapter Black tape stolen by Sensui.
  • Just like Rando, Chrollo stole an ability that allows him to shrink people (and objects).
  • Both can summon carnivorous fish to fight.
  • Suzaku from YuYu Hakusho made a cameo appearance as one of the victims listed in Chrollo’s book in the 2011 anime adaptation. [64]
  • The Sun and Moon is similar in appearance and effects to the style of alchemy used by Solf J. Kimblee in the series Fullmetal Alchemist .
  • Double Face' s literal name is the title of a song by Southern All Stars .
  • Chrollo's conjured book known as Bandit’s Secret , seen in Chapter 97 and on the cover of Volume 11 (released on March 2 nd , 2001 in tankōbon format), and the Yu-Gi-Oh! card The Secret of the Bandit (released on November 29 th , 2001), have the same original name in Japanese ( 盗 ( とう ) 賊 ( ぞく ) の ( ) 極 ( ごく ) 意 ( い ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) , Tōzoku no Gokui ).

Miscellaneous

When written in Japanese kanji, Chrollo is written as "クロロ" (Kuroro). "クロ" (Kuro) translates to black or darkness. "ロ" (Ro) is the 2nd note in the diatonic scale (used in key names, etc.) This suggests that the second "Ro" was added to make the name sound good and doesn't carry a literal significance. Thus, Chrollo's name means black or darkness. Considering his lifestyle and interest in understanding the darkness within the soul of people whose abilities he steals, it is fitting.

Other possible meanings include:

  • "黒絽"—"black silk" (referring to his clothing);
  • "枢"—"pivot hinge" or "lock bolt" (referring to his pivotal position in the Troupe );
  • or "黒ロリ" ( kuro rori )—"black lolita," the style he dresses in.
  • Otherwise, Crollo is an Italian word that means "collapse", which fits him because he hails from a place where society has collapsed, he was not always evil but rather descended into villainy after being broken by grief, and he had caused the collapse of the Yorknew City mafia.
  • The Hunter × Hunter OST (2011) refers to Chrollo as "The Man of the Reversed Cross," much like Hisoka's fortune.
  • Chrollo is played by Ryosei Konishi in the stage play, Hunter × Hunter: Real Stage .
  • In the second character popularity poll , Chrollo placed 4 th with 1,904 votes.
  • In the third character popularity poll , Chrollo placed 8 th with 764 votes.

Hunter X Hunter: 5 Strongest Phantom Troupe Members (& 5 Weakest)

The Phantom Troupe is a powerful group in the Hunter x Hunter world but some members are more powerful than others.

The Phantom Troupe is a powerful group in the Hunter x Hunter world that is made by some of the strongest thieves. Led by Chrollo Lucilfer, this gang is also known as the Spider, with Chrollo himself acting as the head and the other members as the legs.

RELATED: Hunter X Hunter: Top 10 Strongest Transmuters

All members of the Troupe are skilled in combat and are therefore powerful. However, there are those who are exceptionally strong and then a bunch who are weaker in comparison. Here are the 5 strongest known Phantom Troupe members and 5 who are believed to be the weakest.

10 Strongest: Uvogin

Uvogin was one of the most powerful people under Chrollo and in terms of physical strength alone, he was the strongest. His skill with Nen was known to be immense as well and as an Enhancer, he was deadly in close range combat.

A single punch from Uvogin was known to be as strong as a small missile. He was strong enough to massacre the Shadow Beasts during the Yorknew City arc which is quite a feat in itself.

9 Weakest: Shizuku

Shizuku bears the Number 8 mark of the Spider and is quite a strong fighter. Her skill with Nen is decent as well and she's known to be a Conjurer.

During the Chimera Ant arc , she was able to deal with some of the Chimera Ant soldiers without too much trouble. However, most of her showings have been fairly average which is why she's one of the weakest members of the Troupe.

8 Strongest: Feitan

Feitan is one of the most powerful Troupe members and also the one who carries a great deal of responsibility, as seen when he became the de facto leader of the group in Chrollo's absence.

He was the only member in the group who was capable of defeating a Chimera Ant Squadron Leader in Zazan. His Nen abilities, such as the Pain Packer , are way too dangerous for anyone to deal with.

7 Weakest: Kalluto

One of the Zoldyck brothers, Kalluto joined the Phantom Troupe at some point and has since then been a follower of Chrollo. With his excellent skills as a Manipulation type Nen user, Kalluto was able to fight off some Chimera Ant soldiers.

RELATED: From Attack On Titan To Hunter X Hunter: 5 Anime Better Than The Manga

However, he was the first to admit that his skills were inferior to the rest and that he needed to get stronger. Undoubtedly, Kalluto is one of the weakest in the Troupe right now.

6 Strongest: Illumi Zoldyck

Illumi Zoldyck joined the Phantom Troupe and took on the mark that formerly belonged to Uvogin, the number 11. In terms of strength, Illumi is up there with the best in the Troupe, such as Hisoka.

He hasn't been seen going all out yet, however, Hisoka considers him to be quite strong and that says a lot about what he's capable of.

5 Weaker: Shalnark

Shalnark joined the Phantom Troupe after having acquired a Hunter license and went on to become the #6 or #9 of the Spider. He was quite a skilled Manipulation type Nen user and his ability allowed him to set his body to autopilot and fight powerful opponents without much trouble.

He was ultimately killed by Hisoka Morrow, and he didn't even put up a good fight against him, showing that he isn't all that strong after all.

4 Strongest: Hisoka

Hisoka is a former member of the Troupe and also one of the strongest to belong to this group. His goal was to challenge and defeat Chrollo in a fight, and he ultimately got the chance to fight him but was defeated.

RELATED: 10 Strongest Characters Hunter X Hunter Characters

Nonetheless, Hisoka is easily among the strongest characters in the series and he is just as skilled as Chrollo.

3 Weakest: Pakunoda

Pakunoda was quite a useful member of the Phantom Troupe, however, she wasn't all that powerful and her physical strength ranked 11th in the group.

She was a Specialization type Nen user and with her powers, she could extract memories from anyone who she was in contact with, and also by asking certain questions. Although she was a weak fighter, she was an incredible asset to the group, without a doubt.

2 Strongest: Chrollo Lucilfer

The head of the Phantom Troupe, Chrollo bears the #0 mark of the Spider and is arguably the strongest member in the group. Like Pakunoda, he's a Specialization type Nen user and his ability is quite fearsome as it allows him to steal the Nen of others once certain requirements are fulfilled.

Chrollo is incredibly powerful, capable of taking on both Zeno and Silva in battle, as seen during the Yorknew City arc of the series.

1 Weakest: Kortopi

Kortopi was the weakest known member of the Phantom Troupe when it came to physical strength and very little is known about his combat abilities.

He was a natural-born Conjurer and his skill with this type was good enough to earn praise from Kurapika. He was, however, easily killed by Hisoka Morrow, and that, along with the fact that he never fought anyone strong, means that he was definitely among the weakest in the group.

Before Chrollo was recruited, he was a normal, ordinary human with no powers. After being recruited, Chrollo became Floor Master. During this time, he learnt to use Nen, as well as other abilities.

Chrollo is not above inhuman mass murder. Having the power to make people explode or decapitate normal humans with his hand chop is an example of his sadistic nature.

When he was able to defeat Hisoka, Chrollo revealed several new Nen abilities. These include the Bookmark Theme, which allows him to steal abilities from other Nen.

He also has the ability to pierce through skulls with an ordinary pen. However, he is not able to use this skill because of the Judgment Chain.

As the story progressed, Nobunaga began to get into conflict with other Troupe members. Initially, he wanted to recruit Gon and Killua. However, he did not expect to be rejected by Chrollo.

Nobunaga eventually decides to work with the mafia. However, he does not hesitate to kill if he feels that his job requires it.

Nobunaga contacted Shalnark on his cellphone. He is intelligent and a licensed Hunter. This may explain his strong fighting skill.

Feitan Porter

phantom troupe list

Feitan Portor is one of the most powerful characters in the Hunter x Hunter franchise. He's a part of the infamous Phantom Troupe, a group of crooks, criminals, and thieves.

Feitan is a ruthless member of the Troupe. He's also a great fighter and Nen user.

One of his abilities is the Pain Packer. This is a multi-level attack that conjures up an armored suit of clothing, an umbrella, and a weapon. The armor is a protective layer that boosts the aura output of the ensuing technique.

Another of Feitan's abilities is the Emission. This is a trick that he uses to get into an enemy's blind spot. It's not a speed increase, but it does catch the opponent off guard.

In fact, he's not even the first member of the Troupe to use it. That honor belongs to Phinks Magcub, a member of the original Phantom Troupe from Meteor City.

Feitan also has some other cool skills. His umbrella conceals a nail gun and a concealed sword. During a fight with Zazan, he creates multiple afterimages of himself.

Franklin Bordeau

phantom troupe list

Originally, the Phantom Troupe had only thirteen members. They were led by Chrollo Lucilfer, who was a genius with remarkable combat skills. However, some of the members suspected that there was a traitor among the ranks.

Some of the other members of the Troupe are Machi, Pakunoda, and Uvogin. Uvogin is the strongest and most physically durable member of the Troupe. His strength is paired with his speed, making him a formidable opponent.

He is also the most powerful Nen user in the group. His abilities include Nen-emitter and a Double Machine Gun that can fire Nen bullets from his fingers. Franklin also has a large build and possesses amazing stamina.

He can also infuse Nen into needles, which can be used for various tasks. Aside from being a very strong and powerful Nen user, Franklin has reflexes and is adept at long-range combat.

Shizuku is number 8 on the roster. She is not the original member of the Troupe. However, she is one of the few characters who remained after the death of the eight previous members.

Aside from her, Shizuku, the Troupe has a few other members. One of them is Franklin. Another is Phinks Magcub. Other members include Kalluto Zoldyck and Shalnark.

All of the members of the Troupe have unique Nen abilities. Some of the most prominent include Kortopi. He has the ability to copy and duplicate objects.

Unlike other members of the Troupe, Kortopi isn't shown in combat. His main abilities are information gathering and copying items.

However, he does have a very impressive speed. Good battle sense is another attribute that makes him one of the better Spiders. This also means that he can use various tactics to beat his foes.

Despite his appearance, Pakunoda isn't a bad member of the Troupe. Although he's not the strongest in the team, his ability to collect data and process it is a great benefit to the group.

An anime and manga enthusiast who has nothing more better than to do but just write amazing stuffs for the fandom.

All 16 Phantom Troupe Members and Their Powers Explained

Twitter

All 16 Phantom Troupe Members and Their Powers Explained – Hey guys!. In this post, I’ll be discussing All 16 Phantom Troupe Members and Their Powers Explained. The Phantom Troupe is a group that includes some of the worst and most infamous criminals from across the Hunter x Hunter world.

Also using the name Spider, they initially appeared within the series with 13 members, all charismatic and exceptional characters in the use of Nen. Even though the group has unethical ideals such as theft and murder, they still show feelings, and most members care immensely for their fellow members. The Troupe received an A-Rank danger rating. Higher even than the chimera ants’ rating.

And it’s no wonder, as they are feared and known as the most dangerous group in the whole world! Let’s talk about everyone who was once a member of the Spider, even if they are already dead or have left the group. Altogether there were 16 known members who were once part of the Troupe. Did you know that? Well, let’s go to the list.

1. Chrollo Lucilfer

All 16 Phantom Troupe Members and Their Powers Explained

Starting with the boss of the spiders, Chrollo is an innate leader, it’s like he was born to lead a group of people who, alone, would end up killing each other. Chrollo is a very charismatic guy, and his lip manages to hide the fact that he is an extremely dangerous criminal very well. Thanks to his charisma, he can make very good use of his nen ability, called “Skill Hunter”, a Specialization-type technique.

Chrollo summons a red book with a palm drawing on its cover. The book serves to store nen skills that Chrollo steals from other users, consequently leaving victims without access to stolen skills. To use these powers, Chrollo first casts the Book and opens the page containing the desired ability. The book then must remain open in his right hand, allowing him to only use one skill at a time.

However, for him to steal a single ability, a lot of restrictions must be followed. First, Chrollo has to have seen the ability in action with his own eyes. Afterwards, he must converse with his victim, asking him questions of Nen which the target must answer. Finally, the victim needs to touch the palm of his hand to the drawing of a hand on the cover of the book.

And this whole process should be done within an hour. It sounds like a tough job, but thanks to Chrollo’s charisma, it turns out not to be that difficult. Chrollo already has a huge list of skills in his possession, and there doesn’t seem to be a set limit on how many powers his book can hold!

2. Nobunaga Hazama

animesoulking

Nobunaga is a very calm guy and one of the friendliest members of the Troupe, being the swordsman of the group. He even tried to be friends with Gon and Killua, offering the boys the opportunity to become members of the Troupe. However, when it comes to business, the swordsman is one of the most serious and bloodthirsty guys around.

His “En” can reach up to 4 meters away, which corresponds to the range of his blade attacks. For those who don’t remember, the “En” is basically the projection of the aura around the user’s body that serves for him to detect any movement within the range of the technique.

In addition, Nobunaga has shown to be extremely fast and have superhuman reflexes, being able to act extremely quickly during combat. But his main characteristics are being a master swordsman, being incredibly skilled in the use of blades, especially his katana. However, to this day we do not know in a concrete way what his ability or his true capacity with nen is.

We only know that he is a Reinforcement type and from what Nobunaga himself says, anyone who enters the range of his sword, no matter how strong they are, will be instantly killed. But in Shalnark’s view, Nobunaga’s nen ability could easily be replaced, should the need arise. Which implies that he’s not all that formidable after all!

3. Feitan Portor

All 16 Phantom Troupe Members and Their Powers Explained

No, that’s not the Gothic Levi. This is Feitan, the most sadistic member of the Troupe. He’s not much of a talker, but when he needs to be, he makes an excellent interrogator, easily resorting to torture to get people to confess to something. When he gets angry, Feitan speaks in some unknown language, making the boy even more intimidating.

Even though he seems pretty unstable, Feitan is the one who leads the Phantom Troupe when Chrollo is away. One of his skills is called “Pain Packer”, which conjures a kind of armor on his body after he feels enough anger and pain. According to what was said by Phinks, this armor has several versions, but we only saw one of them during the arc of the chimera ants.

This armor can protect Feitan from both enemy attacks and his special ability “Rising Sun”, a technique that uses Emission and Transmutation, which can be deadly to him. The “Rising Sun” accumulates all the anger and pain that Feitan suffered during the fight in the form of a ball of fire, similar to a miniature sun. The more damage he suffered during the fight, the hotter and longer the technique will last.

This power has enormous destructive potential, and can easily burn its victims to death. But thanks to his armor, Feitan manages to come out completely unscathed from his own attack.

4. Machi Komacine

All 16 Phantom Troupe Members and Their Powers Explained

She is a rather expressionless, cold and sarcastic girl. When she does express herself, it’s usually her bad temper spilling over. However, Machi has proven time and time again how much he cares for all members of the Phantom Troupe. Her Transmutation skill takes the name of “Nen Stitches”, where she conjures thin but resistant nen threads.

These cords are very useful in surgical processes, where she can sew up wounds and even reattach people’s severed limbs and leave them fully functional. She already did this with Hisoka’s arm, and within seconds of the quick surgery, Hisoka was able to move his fingers, indicating that the stitches also have regenerative properties.

These threads can also be used for various combat tactics. She can use them to control people like puppets or even as traps to capture, strangle or cut enemies. Machi laces are extremely strong and cannot be cut by almost anything. However, as soon as the strands are detached from Machi’s fingers, they completely lose their effect and durability.

5. Hisoka Morow

All 16 Phantom Troupe Members and Their Powers Explained

Hisoka is one of the main antagonists of Hunter x Hunter. He never really considered himself part of the Troupe. He only joined for selfish purposes, and when he saw that he couldn’t accomplish what he wanted within the group, he just left them and that was it. Hisoka always loves to fight to the death with strong people.

And he only joined the Phantom Troupe to be able to face Chrollo, but after the boss suffered the Nen block caused by Kurapika, Hisoka just threw in the towel and left the group, unsatisfied. His techniques, called “Bungee Gum” and “Texture Surprise” are very simple skills, but thanks to Hisoka’s ingenuity, he manages to become one of the best nen users in the work due to the way he manipulates his nen.

Bungee Gum leaves Hisoka’s aura with properties of gum and rubber, where he can create all sorts of tricks with it: It can create rubber walls that protect him from projectiles, stick a fallen arm back in place, stick people, bring an object thrown back and much, much more! “Texture Surprise” allows him to apply all kinds of textures, as if it were paper, on any kind of flat surface.

He did this to hide his injuries, forge a Spider tattoo on his body, and even fake a message written by Chrollo. All these techniques make Hisoka a master of illusion and distraction – quite typical of a clown or a magician, right?

6. Kalluto Zoldyck

animesoulking

As soon as Hisoka left the Troupe, he was soon replaced by a member of the Zoldyck family, and that someone was Kalluto Zoldyck. Kalluto has always been an essentially quiet and obedient person, ever since he lived with his family of assassins. The boy’s nen focuses on Paper Manipulation.

One of his skills, the “Surveillance Paper Dolls”, allows Kalluto to stick a small piece of paper, like confetti, on a person to be able to hear everything that is being said in the vicinity of that person. The skill becomes very useful for gathering information. He is also completely undetectable, and not even the Ryodan members noticed that they were being spied on by Kalluto himself when using this ability.

His other technique is already more offensive. With his “Dance of the Serpent’s Bite” technique, Kalluto raises his hand and pours out several confetti. Then use a paper fan to keep the confetti floating in the air as you make graceful movements. Soon, Kalluto uses the fan to guide the confetti towards the enemy.

Since only one piece of paper sticks to the opponent, Kalluto gathers all the other sharp confetti to violently attack the point on the body where the first paper stuck. This skill was enough to shred the body of a chimera ant without any difficulty.

7. Phinks Magcub

phantom troupe members

Phinks is considered the second most physically strong member of the entire Troupe, second only to Uvogin. He’s a guy who gets irritated easily and is quite a rant, picking fights at all times with anyone around him! Despite this, Phinks is very loyal to Chrollo and the group itself. Interestingly, the person Phinks gets along with best within the Troupe is Feitan. Coincidence? I think not.

Its skill, “Ripper Cyclotron”, is Reinforcement type and is one of the best techniques when it comes to giving power to the user. As Phinks rotates his arm clockwise, he increases the amount of nen contained in his fist with each rotation. It’s unknown how far Phinks can carry his nen, but as we know, he can rotate his arm as much as he wants to gather an insane amount of nen and generate an explosive blow!

With just 15 turns, Phinks managed to completely pulverize the body of a chimera ant with a single punch, but according to his own statement, only half of those turns would have been more than enough for the task. Unfortunately, that’s the most we’ve seen of Phinks’ powers in action. Who knows what he would be able to do if he rotated his own arm 100 times.

8. Pakunoda

animesoulking

Pakunoda was a very intimidating and proud woman, but she was another case of someone who hides her affection for the Troupe behind her feelings petty. The woman was a Specialization type, and her technique, “Psychometry”, allows her to “read” the memories of someone she has had physical contact with and asked a series of specific questions.

Thanks to this technique, deceiving Pakunoda was practically impossible, as she could unravel the truth just by analyzing the person’s memories, revealing not only their true intentions, but also allowing her to gather precious information, such as secrets and enemies’ weaknesses. Pakunoda also owned a revolver that allowed her to “shoot memories” into the heads of others.

The ammunition was called “Memory Bombs”, and the shots did not cause any damage. The purpose of this technique was to share memories of other people – or even herself – to pass on information more accurately. However, if Pakunoda reads someone’s memory with “Psychometry” and later throws that collected memory at that same person, this causes that individual to end up losing that specific memory.

9. Shalnark

All 16 Phantom Troupe Members and Their Powers Explained

Even though he seems like an innocent and cheerful person, it’s possible that Shalnark was one of the coldest members of the group – he didn’t even care about his own life. He even latched onto his victims as if they were mere “toys” to him, which broke when killed. This carefree personality can probably be explained by his ability, called “Black Voice”.

Shalnark can stick small antennae into people’s bodies and manipulate their actions like puppets from a long distance using a special phone. He can control any action the person takes, and the victim acts like a zombie while being controlled. Shalnark can also leave his “puppets” on autopilot, where although they are still under the effects of Black Voice, they do not need to be controlled directly by the user.

However, if the antenna is removed or destroyed, Shalnark loses all control of its victim. He can also put himself on autopilot! By sticking an antenna to his own body, Shalnark gains an immense amount of aura, which makes him practically become a Super Saiyan from Hunter x Hunter, increasing his strength and speed.

This ability also prevents him from being manipulated by other users, as he is already being manipulated by himself. But this technique comes with several cons. The Shalnark cannot exit its autopilot until a certain mission is completed. Moreover, after disabling this mode, he will not remember anything that happened and will experience severe muscle pain for several days.

10. Franklin Bordeau

animesoulking

The Hunter x Hunter version of Frankenstein. Franklin is, without a doubt, the most loyal member of the entire Phantom Troupe, and if the members ever dared to destroy Phantom Troupe, Franklin would kill them all and start the group all over again. He’s also very irritable, but he’s a guy who knows how to analyze the course of a fight to come up with a strategy.

His nen skill is Emission type and he is very straight to the point without any secrets. Called the “Double Machine Gun”, Franklin “opens” the tips of his own fingers, revealing gun barrels. From then on, he is able to shoot aura from his fingers in the form of bullets, consecutively and quickly, as if it were a real machine gun.

The technique has the destructive power of a heavy machine gun, being able to instantly kill dozens of people at once. Interestingly, Franklin cut off his fingertips completely to improve his own skill. It wasn’t necessary, but at least it helped the big guy improve his performance. It is unknown if Franklin can do anything other than just strafe others, so in essence that’s all your nen does.

11. Shizuku Murasaki

All 16 Phantom Troupe Members and Their Powers Explained

She is the most calm, expressionless and passive member of the team. Shizuku is also somewhat inattentive and has a horrible memory, and can even forget the names of people she has known for years. Even though she looks like a fragile girl, she managed to wear Gon out a lot in an arm wrestling match.

Her nen is a Conjuration type, and she can summon a super powerful special vacuum cleaner, which she affectionately named “Blinky”. At the end of the vacuum’s barrel is a monstrous mouth, full of sharp teeth and a tongue. The object is very useful to help clean up all the evidence of crimes left by the Phantom Troupe. Basically, Blinky can vacuum any inanimate object, without any limits.

The only things he cannot suck up are living things and objects conjured by Nen. Puddles of blood, several corpses, destroyed objects… It doesn’t matter how many things or how big something is, Blinky manages to suck everything into him. Not even Shizuku knows where all the sucked things go, and once something gets inside Blinky, it never comes back.

The only way for an object to come out of the vacuum is if it was the last thing sucked in, and then it can be regurgitated by the vacuum. In battle, as long as the opponent has an open wound, Shizuku can even suck all the blood out of the target’s body from that wound, using the vacuum’s powerful suction force to dry the victim’s body completely.

12. Bonolenov Ndongo

animesoulking

Very little is known about Bonolenov’s personality and his reasons for joining the Troupe. He’s a straight-talking guy with a lot of pride in his tribe. Bonolenov is also a formidable warrior and doesn’t really like to fight and kill – only when provoked. The reason his entire body is covered in bandages is because he was part of a tribe whose biggest feature was the many holes in his body.

You can even see through those holes! And how Bonolenov is still alive, nobody knows. As he removes the bandages and air passes through the holes, it generates a sound that sounds like music. If you can hear this melody… Run, my friend. It’s like the opening song for a boss-fight. His technique is a Conjuration type and is called “Battle Cantabile”.

It has several versions depending on the song that comes out. The “Prologue” mode clothes the man in indigenous armor, in addition to also giving him a huge spear. However, this is far from his strongest technique. Its “Jupiter” mode conjures a colossal orb, with the appearance of Jupiter, and crushes its enemies as long as they are still listening to the music produced by its body.

It doesn’t even allow the opponent to run away, as the sphere chases the target at tremendous speed. He also has another mode that he just mentioned but we never saw: the “Metamorphosen”. Apparently, this technique allows him to transform in a variety of ways to adapt to the pace of a fight. It’s a pity that all we have about this power are Bonolenov’s own words.

animesoulking

The most physically strong member of the entire Phantom Troupe. Uvogin was an extremely proud, stubborn and reckless man – but he valued all of Troupe’s people. Even without using any nen, Uvogin already had superior physical strength in all aspects. His throat was tough enough to generate a scream so loud it was capable of killing people within sound range.

Just hearing the man draw air into his lungs, the members of Troupe would stop whatever they were doing to cover their ears so they wouldn’t be killed by the sound! Due to his size and strength, containing the big guy’s movements was practically impossible. The only person who managed to do this efficiently was Kurapika. Uvogin was a true Reinforcement-type prodigy, and his ability was “Big Bang Impact”.

Uvogin would coat his entire arm in “Ko” and deliver a punch. Even if it seems like something simple, the force of the impact is comparable to the destruction caused by a small missile, creating a huge crater. The impact can even hit people who are a considerable distance from it.

Uvogin’s goal was to make his blow as strong as a nuclear warhead! And if he hadn’t been killed by Kurapika, he would certainly have achieved his goal!

14. Illumi Zoldyck

animesoulking

Another member of the Zoldyck family in the group. Illumi is Killua’s older brother and is also a pretty deadpan guy – until his insanity is revealed as someone who enjoys manipulating people or protecting his family in the most terrifying ways possible. His nen is a Manipulation type, and all of his techniques consist of doing various things by manipulating needles.

Illumi can alter his appearance and voice by sticking multiple needles into his body. That’s his “Body Alteration” technique, which makes him a true master of disguise – could even put Twilight to shame, eh? The ability “Hypnotic Spell” causes Illumi to place “pre-set” orders on someone after inserting a tiny needle into the person’s brain.

Luckily, this needle can be pulled out after a lot of physical exertion and Nen use. It’ll leave you pretty scarred, but at least you’ll be free. He also has the “Corpse Control” technique, which basically gives Illumi the ability to control corpses as if they were puppets. They can even talk and act as if they were still alive. Finally, we have the technique that is considered one of the darkest in anime: “Needle People”.

Illumi concentrates a huge amount of nen into several needles and shoots them at people’s heads. Soon after, all of them are given a specific order and come under Zoldyck’s full control. He can have an entire army of people like that if he wants to! The only way out of possession is: completing the task given to you, exceeding your physical exertion capacity, or just dying.

15. Kortopi

animesoulking

Kortopi is considered to be the physically weakest member of the spider team. Sad as it may sound, Kortopi doesn’t have a strong personality trait, he just follows all orders given to him without question and rarely says anything. His skill was very useful to temporarily replace objects stolen by the Troupe.

It was called “Gallery Fake”, and it was a Conjuration type. When Kortopi touched an object with his left hand, he could conjure an exact replica of that object with his right hand. So, just steal something, put a copy in its place and presto, job done! However, the copies automatically fell apart after only 24 hours depending on their size, but that was more than enough time for Troupe to escape the crime scene.

Although he had a limitation on replicating living things naturally, he could even conjure an exact copy of someone in the form of a corpse! He even made use of this ability when he conjured corpses from the bodies of all the members of Phantom Troupe, to fake the death of all of them and allow the group to escape the police’s sights.

While still in possession of the original object, Kortopi could also know the exact position of the copy when touching the original, no matter how far away they were.

16. Omokage

animesoulking

He is the character who was said to be the first number 4 of the Phantom Troupe, who in theory was terminated by Hisoka, thus giving his place in the Troupe to him. Omokage appears in the movie “Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge”. he basically was a goth who had a superiority complex over other people. And his goal entering the Phantom Troupe was just to create puppets from the members.

His Nen category was of the Specialization type, he was a creator of ventriloquist’s puppets… which refers to the idea of manipulation, but it goes far beyond that. He sees his creations as being superior to people, almost as an evolution of humans. The doll created will have some of the memories of the person he was based on, possess consciousness and even have his Nen abilities.

However, compared to the original version, the puppets are far inferior, and even though they are aware they are obliged to obey all of the Omokage’s orders. The dolls also don’t have eyes, and because of that one of their skills is precisely being able to steal other people’s eyes, thus blinding the target.

But the only function of eye stealing is to see through that person’s eyes, as the doll does not become stronger or gain any other special abilities. After the doll is defeated, the eyes return to their original wielder. Lastly, Omokage can also use his ability to merge with up to three puppets, gaining increased physical strength and Nen abilities from each of the puppets he has fused with.

But the way the group is always changing members, it’s possible that we still see many more people being part of it. Maybe even some characters we already know end up joining the group somehow, just like the members of the Zoldyck family.

Or who knows, there may even be a well-known character who is part of the Spider, but has yet to be revealed as a member. There are several possibilities, but it’s better to leave everything in Togashi’s hands, right?
