Personality [ ]

Jack Scarecrow is a kind-hearted individual and a gentle giant to the pumpkins in the patch on Holiday Hill Farm. Being a scarecrow, he has a very "down-home" sort of style, including in the way he talks and acts. He is usually pretty laid back but can become strict or serious when a problem arises. He has a common-sense approach when it comes to problem-solving which helps him to guide and take care of the pumpkins in the patch. He is very caring towards others as well, encouraging those like Spookley to do their best and to never give up. He will always be there to aid another even if it endangers himself. Even though he can be a little clumsy and clueless at times, he shows great leadership and guidance in the pumpkin patch, always there to protect the pumpkins and guide them when needed.

Appearance [ ]

Jack Scarecrow wears a blue and white checkered long-sleeve shirt, the wrists of the shirt being tied off with rope, and red pants that cut off at the ankles. He also wears a brown leather belt fastened around his waist, white gloves on his hands, and blue boots with rope laces on his feet. His head is comprised of a burlap sack stuffed with straw, some of which can be seen poking out underneath and on top of the milk bucket he wears on his head. His eyes are a bluish-green color, and he is always seen carrying around his broomstick.

Role in the special [ ]

Jack Scarecrow is the....well, the scarecrow on Holiday Hill Farm as well as the caretaker and leader of the pumpkins in the patch. While his duties may include normal scarecrow activities like keeping birds out of the crops or doing chores around the farm like in the musical edition, Jack poses as an important role model for Spookley and for children everywhere. While the other pumpkins make fun of and tease Spookley for his square shape, he sees something special in the little pumpkin. He even allows Spookley to compete in the Jack-a-Lympics because "square or not, Spookley's a pumpkin." He constantly encourages Spookley to do his best throughout the games and to not give up, as well as being the first to acknowledge that Spookley is "quite the little hero" at the end.

  • Although Jack Scarecrow is seen in the second book of Spookley, A Family to Be Thankful For , he does not make an appearance in the first book, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin .
  • While in the movie he nearly burns to death from a flaming tree branch, in the musical he is blown towards the river like all the pumpkins.
  • His voice actor, Craig Francis, is not known for many voice acting parts.
  • Some people think he bears a resemblance to the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz.
  • His two closest friends are Boris and Bella, brother and sister vegetarian bats.
  • While he is never shown without his broomstick in Spookley the Square Pumpkin , he is shown in several scenes without it in the latest movie Spookley and the Christmas Kittens.

Even though he can be a little clumsy and forgetful at times, he shows great leadership and guidance in the pumpkin patch, always there to protect the pumpkins and guide them when needed.

He has green eyes and can be seen throughout the movie carrying around an old broomstick.

While Jack is not seen as much in this movie as he is in the original one, he still has a part to play in this movie, as all the characters do. Jack continues to be the overseer of the pumpkins in the patch, and that role is emphasized more in this movie. Jack is the one to decide what to do with mysterious present addressed to Mistletoe that magically appears. When Jack finally realizes that Spookley is no longer on the farm, and learns that Bobo, Big Tom, and Little Tome let Spookley go off on his own in the woods to find Mistletoe, he is very disappointed in them and lets them know it. The feel is almost like that of a parent scolding a child who has done wrong. Jack even demands that the pumpkins stay in the barn while he goes to look for Spookley in the snowstorm (which didn't work out). Besides being an authoritative figure, Jack serves as a very trusted friend of Spookley's (as well as being the one to save him from being crushed by a water drain pipe) and as being the one to step up and let the other pumpkins know that what they did was wrong.

  • While Jack's appearance has remained relatively the same in this movie, his colors are lighter as well as the fact that his eyes are now green instead of blue.
  • In the Spookley the Square Pumpkin , Jack could always be seen carrying around his broomstick. In the Christmas movie, he goes through several scenes without it.
  • Jack apparently has an interest in ventriloquism.
  • Jack likes to decorate the farm for Christmas as he is seen decorating a Christmas tree and he decorated the inside of the barn.

Educational Value

Meant to entertain and provide thoughtful messages rather than to educate.

Positive Messages

Promotes acceptance of those who are different; everyone deserves a chance; everyone gets to join in. Differences can even make you special. "It's fine to be round when the weather's fair, but there are times when it's better to be a square." "You'll never know if you never try."

Positive Role Models

Spookley, saddened by his difference at the outset, learns that he has his own special place on the pumpkin farm. Jack the Scarecrow, the patch's leader, wisely integrates Spookley into the pumpkin patch. Spiders and bats are funny rather than scary or mean.

Violence & Scariness

Jack falls down. A fierce storm with wind and rain is mildly threatening; characters fall and are tossed around. Scarecrow is briefly trapped near a small fire.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Spookley the Square Pumpkin is an animated story based upon a children's book, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin , by Joe Troiano. Spookley, the only square pumpkin in a patch watched over by a fatherly scarecrow, is sad and embarrassed by his squareness. Events, however, convince both Spookley and all the creatures on the pumpkin farm that the little guy has a valuable place among them. A series of inspired musical numbers enhances the strong messages about fitting in, valuing oneself, and inclusiveness. Cartoon action includes some bumps and falls, and a fierce storm. Made with a sure hand and a clear desire to provide quality entertainment for kids, this film has been a yearly tradition for the Disney Jr. cable outlet. First available on DVD in 2005, the movie has been re-released on Blu-ray. For all ages, with a caution about the storm, which could be scary for very young kids. Not as friendly as you hope!

Movie should be removed from streaming services, what's the story.

A kindly narrator tells the story of SPOOKLEY THE SQUARE PUMPKIN, which takes place on a pumpkin farm just before Halloween. Jack, the Scarecrow (voiced by Craig Francis), has discovered a small, square fellow amidst all the other pumpkins that have been growing in the patch. The little guy, Spookley ( Sonja Ball ), quickly realizes that he's the only square pumpkin in the patch, and that makes him sad. And it makes at least one of the other pumpkins mad. Spookley doesn't belong with us, Little Tom (Rick Jones) declares. It's up to Jack, who watches over pumpkins, to give Spookley a chance to join with the others. But after he flops badly in the annual Jack-A-Lympics Competition, Spookley is inconsolable. Then, threatened by an unexpected storm on the day before Halloween, the scarecrow, the other critters who live in the patch, and the pumpkins themselves are all in danger. It's up to Spookley to prove his worth by using his smarts and his courage to save them all.

Is It Any Good?

Bright, witty, and with an abundance of terrific musical numbers and engaging characters, this short feature is a Halloween treat that families can enjoy together. The messages about being different and inclusiveness are familiar, but they're solid. Even the "villainous" round pumpkin who doesn't love Spookley at first sight is funny rather than frightening. Usually spiders and bats perpetuate the "bad guy" tradition, but in Spookley the Square Pumpkin , they couldn't be more likable or distinctive. The production is all first-rate, with exceptional performances, fine animation, and wonderful attention to detail in every facet. Funny and just the right length for little kids, this movie is highly recommended.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the popularity of movies about characters who don't "fit in" with the crowd. Like its iconic predecessors, The Ugly Duckling and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer , Spookley is "different" from others when we meet him. What message(s) are these stories trying to convey?

Bats and spiders are often made to be scary or villains in movies for kids. How were the bats and spiders portrayed in Spookley the Square Pumpkin ? Did Boris, Bella, Edgar, Allan, and Poe change your opinion of such critters? How?

What is meant by the statement: "You'll never know if you never try?"

The spiders strongly announced that they were not "bugs," but "arachnids." What is an "arachnid"? Do the words "insect" and "bug" mean the same thing?

  • Spookley and the Christmas Kittens

Spookley is the main protagonist in Spookley the Square Pumpkin (Movie) as well as the books and musical. He was bullied by the other pumpkins because of his odd shape, however, he did not let that bother him as he still entered to compete in the Jack-a-Lympics despite their protests. Spookley had lost all the events and had begun to think that the other pumpkins were right about him. But when a mighty storm hits the farm on Halloween, Spookley is able to show the others that being different can be a good thing. Because of his square shape, he does not roll around in the wind like the other pumpkins. While trying to help the other pumpkins who are about to roll into the raging river, Jack Scarecrow gets pinned underneath a flaming tree branch. Spookley saves Jack by climbing up a water tower and dousing Jack and the tree branch just as his arm catches on fire. He then rescues the other pumpkins by using his square shape to block one of the wheels of the cart they are on before they roll into the river. Spookley is the little hero of the pumpkin patch who teaches us that it is ok to be different and that our differences make us very special.

Spookley

Full Synopsis

Our story begins with Jack Scarecrow in the Holiday Hill Farm Pumpkin Patch, looking at Big Tom, Little Tom, and Bobo, all pumpkins. He also notices the Honeydoos, a duo of singing melons. Jack is very excited for Halloween and begins dancing around the patch. ("It's Halloween")

Jack and the pumpkins hear a small voice, but don't know where it's coming from. Jack looks around the patch and discovers Spookley, a square pumpkin, under a large leaf. Jack is excited to find Spookley and tells him he could be the Pick of the Patch this year. The other pumpkins, however, don't like the fact that Spookley looks different from them. ("Look at Spookley") Jack tells the other pumpkins to be nice to Spookley and goes off to finish some other chores on the farm. Once he leaves, Little Tom insults Spookley and tells him that he is going to ruin Halloween for the rest of them because he is not a real pumpkin: real pumpkins are round. Spookley is left alone, and becomes very sad. ("If I Was Round")

Spookley worries that he will ruin Halloween for everyone. Suddenly, three spiders appear and introduce themselves as Edgar, Allan and Poe. They tell Spookley that he can't worry about what the other pumpkins say: plenty of spiders have been faced with challenges, but they believed in themselves and succeeded in the end. ("The Boo Song")

Spookley still isn't convinced; he remembers Little Tom telling him he's different. Edgar reminds Spookley that everyone and everything is different. Being different isn't a bad thing. Edgar tells Spookley he can be the Pick of the Patch if he sets his mind to it. ("I'm Gonna Try")

Meanwhile, the other pumpkins are getting ready for Halloween and all think they will be chosen as Pick of the Patch. Bobo is overconfident. ("She's Bobo") Spookley returns to the patch to everyone's surprise, but Little Tom makes fun of him and his new spider friends. Jack returns and lines everyone up for the Pick of the Patch. He says something nice about everyone and Bobo and The Honeydoos start singing. Suddenly, a storm starts up!

Everyone is blown around by the wind and rain toward the dangerous river, except for Spookley. He decides to help the other pumpkins and blocks a large hole in the fence with his body. The pumpkins and Jack are blown toward him and all pile up in front of the broken fence until Spookley cannot be seen anymore.

Spookley doesn't wake up for a few minutes, and every- one is worried, even the pumpkins that made fun of him earlier. Luckily, he opens his eyes and smiles, letting everyone know he's okay. Jack tells Spookley that he is quite the hero. All the other pumpkins apologize to Spookley for bullying him because of his differences; even Little Tom. They welcome him to the patch. ("The Transylvania Twist")

Farmer Hill arrives to choose the Pick of the Patch and picks...Spookley! He loves the fact that Spookley is square. Everyone celebrates Halloween together in the patch. ("I'm Gonna Try (Reprise)")
