Virat Kohli player profile

India has given to the world many a great cricketer but perhaps none as ambitious as Virat Kohli. To meet his ambition, Kohli employed the technical assiduousness of Sachin Tendulkar and fitness that was in the league of top athletes in the world, not just cricketers. As a result, Kohli became the most consistent all-format accumulator of his time, making jaw-dropping chases look easy, and finding, in his own words, the safest possible way to score runs. Plenty of them.

This ambition transferred seamlessly to his captaincy: he demanded more than ever of his bowlers especially the quick ones, often sacrificed a batsman for bowling depth, and led India to a long stay at No. 1 in Test rankings and a first-ever series win in Australia. He is well on his way to end up as India's most successful Test captain.

Barring one in Bangladesh, Kohli scored Test hundreds in and against every country he played. He absolutely smashed records for number of matches taken to reach eight, nine, ten and eleven thousand ODI runs, and became the first batter to score 50 hundreds in one-day internationals.

An Under-19 world Cup-winning captain, when he burst onto the scene, Kohli was a precocious talent with a cover drive to kill for. He was destined to be India's next big batsman as the Tendulkar era began to retire, but Kohli wanted to be more: a cricketer whom the opposition would be in awe of, a cricketer whose presence would raise the intensity of the contest. He lived every ball, competed each moment, and made sure he had the fitness and strength to do so. He was widely credited for changing the fitness culture in Indian cricket, introducing endurance tests as a criterion for selection.

Kohli was quite simply India's most powerful captain. Centre of every marketing campaign for Indian cricket, he also happened to lead at a time when the BCCI was run by interim administrators who knew better than to draw the ire of Indian cricket's biggest star. There was never any cause to doubt his intent: to do things that will win matches for India, which they did plenty under him.

India captain Virat Kohli will be desperate to win the T20 World Cup in Australia. AFP

Arguably the greatest all-round batsman of this generation and one of the finest of all time. There are two distinct halves in Kohli’s career – the first where he struggled to cope with the sudden stardom and pressure, and the second where he reinvented himself, made fitness the driving force behind his cricket and took his game to a level never before seen.

Kohli is so much more than the runs, centuries and wins. He has become the undisputed king of cricket, injecting life into the global game and raising the profile of Test cricket at a time when T20 cricket was threatening to take over completely.

It was clear early on that Kohli was destined for greatness. He lost his father when he was 18. The tragedy struck during his team Delhi’s first-class match against Karnataka in 2006. After completing the final rites, Kohli returned to the ground and scored a match-saving 90 in the second innings.

His international career had a slow start. Kohli struggled to cement his spot in the team until around 2010. He found form just in time for the 2011 World Cup, was included in India’s playing XI and scored a century in his first World Cup game – against Bangladesh. He featured in every game as the men in blue lifted the 50-over title.

The next year, Kohli made a career-defining decision to revamp his fitness regime and make it the focal point of his cricket. Kohli quickly turned into a fitness fanatic and set the benchmark for aspiring cricketers in India and across the world.

Success on the field followed soon after as Kohli became an ODI batting behemoth, mastering the art of securing wins in a chase. He first became Test captain in 2014. But it was only by 2017 that Kohli became captain across all formats. The Kohli era had started and he brought about a complete change in team culture, with emphasis on fitness, fast bowlers and attitude.

It is getting difficult to keep up with the number of records that Kohli has broken over the last few years. He is the only batsman to average more than 50 in all three formats, has already scored 70 international centuries by the age of 31 and seems well on his way to breaking every major batting record.

Under his reign, India have become the No1 Test team in the world with Kohli one of the most successful Test captains of all time – 33 victories with a win percentage of 62. But there are a few missing pieces – victory in a major tournament as captain and Test series wins in England and South Africa being the main ones.

If Kohli manages to tick off the final few boxes, he will finish his career as the greatest player and captain India has produced.

Kohli made his cricket debut in October 2002 with the Delhi Under-15 team in the 2002-03 Polly Umrigar Trophy and lead the team for the next trophy. He was later selected in the Delhi Under-17 team for the 2003-04 Vijay Merchant Trophy where he finished as the highest run-scorer.

At the age of 18, Kohli made his first-class debut for Delhi against Tamil Nadu wherein he scored 10 runs. In July 2006, he made his debut in the Under-19 team during India's tour of England. India won both ODI and Test series. Kohli made his T20 debut next year and emerged as the highest run-scorer in the Inter-State T20 Championship with 179 runs.

The year 2008 was a life-changing year for Kohli. First, he captained the Under-19 Cricket World Cup-winning team. Second, he was bought by RCB for $30,000 on a youth contract for IPL. Third, he made his international debut.

After recovering from a minor injury, Kohli replaced Gambhir for the tri-series in Sri Lanka and batter at no. 4 in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy as Yuvraj Singh was recovering from an injury.

For the tri-nation ODI tournament in Bangladesh in 2010, Tendulkar was rested, thereby enabling Kohli to play in each match. Due to his phenomenal performance in Bangladesh, he was praised by the then captain MS Dhoni.

Kohli was part of the World Cup-winning team in 2011 and became the first Indian batsman to score a century on World Cup debut.

Kohli made his Test debut against West Indies at Kingston and performed poorly in the series, amassing just 76 runs in five innings. In 2015, he became the first Indian batsman to score a century against Pakistan in a World Cup match.

During South Africa's tour of India, he became the fastest batsman in the world to make 1,000 runs in T20I cricket, achieving the feat in his 27th innings.

During the ODI tour of Australia, Kohli emerged as the fastest batsman in the world to cross the 7000-run mark in ODIs, and the fastest to score 25 centuries.

During the 3 match Test series against Sri Lanka at home in 2017, he became the first batsman to score six double hundreds as a captain. That year, he scored a total of 2818 international runs, the third-highest by an Indian in a calendar year and highest ever by an Indian player.

In August 2018, he ranked no. 1 in the ICC Test rankings. With this, he became the seventh Indian batter to achieve this milestone. He became the first Indian, first captain and tenth overall to hit three successive centuries in ODIs in October 2018.

For the tri-series in Zimbabwe in 2010, Raina was named captain while Kohli was made vice-captain. During this, he emerged as the fastest Indian batsman to reach 1,000 ODI runs.

He was appointed as vice-captain for the 2012 Asia Cup due to his excellent performance in Australia.

Kohli captained the 2013 West Indies tri-series winning team after Dhoni injured himself during the match. He also captained a five-match ODI tour of Zimbabwe, which India won by 5-0, their first in any away ODI series.

He was named vice-captain for the 2014 ICC World T20 Competition where India emerged as the runner ups and Kohli as Man of the Tournament as he amassed 319 runs in the tournament.

He led India in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka which India won by 5-0. It was the second whitewash under his captaincy and fourth in India's ODI history.

He led India in the first Test of the Australian tour and scored 115 runs in the first innings, thereby becoming the fourth Indian to score a hundred on his Test captaincy debut. Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket at the conclusion of the third match between India and Australia, and Kohli was appointed as the full-time Test captain ahead of the fourth Test at Sydney.

At Sydney, Kohli scored 147 in the first innings and became the first batter in the Test cricket history to score three hundred in his first three innings as Test captain. He was named as captain of the 'Team of the Tournament' for the 2016 World Twenty20 by the ICC.

He captained India in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. India entered the finals but lost to Pakistan. Kohli also captained the 2019 Cricket World Cup where India failed to reach the finals after losing the semi-final match against New Zealand. India's first whitewash under Kohli's captaincy was India's tour of New Zealand in 2020.

India lost the 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final to New Zealand, Kohli's third defeat as captain in knockouts and finals of ICC tournaments. India failed to make it through the semi-finals in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 under Kohli's captaincy.

He wanted to cover up his old tattoo with a new one. As I got to work on the project, I felt the pressure and excitement building up inside me. I couldn’t believe that I was working with the one and only Virat Kohli. I could feel the energy and passion that Virat brought to the project. You just don’t understand how to get over it. That was a phase when I literally couldn’t do anything to overturn things…I felt like I was the loneliest guy in the world.”
I’ve decided to step down as the T20 captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October.”

He elaborated,

Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all three formats and captaining regularly for last five to six years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead Indian team in Test and ODI cricket.

He further added,

I have given my everything to the Team during my time as T20 captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 team as a batsman moving forward.”
It has been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it is now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey: but never had there been a lack of effort or a lack of belief.”
I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it is not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to the team.”

While giving thanks to Shatri & Co., he said,

Ravi Bhai and the support group who were the engine behind this vehicle that moved up in Test Cricket consistently. You all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to life. Lastly, a big thank you to M.S. Dhoni who believed in me as captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian cricket forward.”
One thing I can tell you is when I gave up Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person who I’ve played with before — M. S. Dhoni.”

He also criticised those who gave suggestions on TV debates but never approached him. He added,

A lot of people have my number and a lot of people give suggestions on TV, but among people who have my number, I didn’t get a message from anyone else.” [16] The Hindu jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_3554_1_16').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_3554_1_16', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });

History-maker Virat Kohli becomes first player to achieve massive milestone in IPL for RCB against DC

Virat kohli is playing his 250th ipl match and became the first player in the tournament's history to play all of them for just one team, royal challengers bengaluru (rcb). kohli scored 27 off 13 before being dismissed by ishant sharma as delhi capitals opted to bowl first after winning the toss..

Anshul Gupta

Kohli has been in terrific form in the 2024 edition of the IPL scoring 661 runs striking at 155 and is currently the Orange Cap holder. Kohli is head and shoulders ahead of players to play most matches for a team as the player closest to him is MS Dhoni, who has played 233 games for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and might be playing his final season in the tournament.

Most matches played in IPL for one team

250* - Virat Kohli (RCB)

233 - MS Dhoni (CSK) 211 - Rohit Sharma (MI) 189 - Kieron Pollard (MI) 176 - Suresh Raina (CSK) 174 - Sunil Narine (KKR)

263* - MS Dhoni (CSK/RPS) 256 - Rohit Sharma (MI/Deccan) 255 - Dinesh Karthik (DC/GL/KKR/RCB/KXIP/MI) 250* - Virat Kohli (RCB)

Kohli started well against the Delhi bowlers hitting them to all parts before the visitors struck back. Mukesh Kumar accounted for Faf du Plessis ' wicket and Ishant Sharma got his good friend Kohli before the catch-dropping saga began. Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar feasted on DC's poor fielding and stitched an 88-run partnership with as many as four catches getting dropped.

However, it was a splendid comeback for the Capitals as RCB lost 7 wickets for 63 runs in the last 46 deliveries. RCB would feel that they left a few runs out there but they will have to win at any cost to stay alive in the playoffs race.

Virat Kohli Biography For Students And Children

4to40.com May 31, 2019 Biographies for Kids 4,927 Views

Virat Kohli was born on 5 November 1988 in New Delhi . His interest in cricket developed while playing on the streets of Delhi. His father enrolled him in a cricket academy where he was coached by Rajkumar Sharma.

Virat Kohli’s Biography

He started his career by playing for Delhi team in the Polly Umrigar and Vijay Merchant tournaments and earned a place in the Delhi team for a List-A game. He was later selected to be a part of the India U-19 team.

He toured England and Pakistan under Lalchand Rajput and gained a lot of appreciation from him. He was always in the top-2 highest run getters of each tournament.

First Class and Junior Career

Just four months after being selected for India U-19, Kohli made his first class debut in the Ranji Trophy. Playing an incredible innings of 90 runs a day after his father’s death earned him a lot of respect from the cricketing fraternity.

He successfully led the India U-19 team to victory in the 2008 ICC U-19 World Cup.

Emergence as a cricketer

He got a call into the Indian national side due to the absence of the limited overs openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag . He made his ODI debut on 18 August 2008.

His initial phase in international suffered quite a few ups and downs. Despite his poor form, he was given chances due to his skill level. He made it count and rose to No. 2 in ODI rankings in 2011. The same year, he was handed the test cap.

By the time Sachin Tendulkar retired from international cricket, Kohli was becoming a great candidate to fill in his shoes.

Virat Kohli was named India’s test captain in 2014 after the retirement of MS Dhoni. He began his captaincy career on a high against Australia in Australia . He was handed the captaincy for limited overs in 2017.

Virat Kohli has been one of the most successful captains India has had. He enjoys a win percentage of 62.5 in test cricket and 78.57 in ODI cricket. Outside Asia , his most successful outing came at the 2017 Champions Trophy, when India ended up as the runners up of the tournament.

He led the team to number one ranks in both tests and ODIs simultaneously, the only Indian captain to do so.

Virat Kohli’s Stats

Virat Kohli is the modern master and arguably the best batsman of this generation. In ODIs, he stands second only to Sachin for the number of centuries. Compared to Sachin’s tally of 49 ODI centuries, Virat already has 32. In 202 ODI matches, he has scored 9030 runs.

In 63 Tests, Virat now has 5268 runs including 20 hundreds under his belt. All of his 6 double hundreds have come in 2016 and 2017.
