You downloaded pictures from your camera, phone, or USB drive. Now you want to share these galleries with friends and family in a nice presentation. This guide shows you how to view a slideshow on Windows 10 using native tools.

This guide explains two built-in methods: using the Photos app and using File Explorer. The benefit of the Photos app is that you have immediate access to other albums and folders without digging through File Explorer. Meanwhile, the File Explorer version provides built-in slideshow controls not present in the Photos app.

Normally, all you need to do is double-click on an image file to launch the Photos app. If Photos isn't set as the default image application on your computer, right-click on a photo, hover over "Open With," and select "Photos."

Once the app loads, you'll see the static picture on your screen. Hover your mouse over the picture's left or right side and you can advance or "rewind" to another image using the virtual arrow overlays.

To start a slideshow, click the three-dot button located in the top-right corner. This expands a drop-down menu listing a "Slideshow" option at the top. Click this option to start the show.

Once the slideshow begins, it will cycle through all images stored in the initial photo's associated folder. The slideshow will not add pictures stored in sub-folders.

For controls, you can press the Right Arrow key to move to the next picture or press the Left Arrow key to rewind back to the previous image.

Alternatively, you can add a folder to the Photos app and view a specific slideshow at any time.

First, click the Windows button in your taskbar followed by the Photos app located on the Start Menu. If you can't find it, type in "Photos" immediately after hitting the Windows button.

With the Photos app open, select “Folders” on the app's toolbar followed by the “Add a Folder” tile.

In this next step, you might see one of two scenarios:

• A pop-up window with suggested folders. Ignore those and click the “Add Another Folder” link to open File Explorer. You can always add folders later.
• No pop-up window. The "Add a Folder" button sends you straight to File Explorer.

With File Explorer open, locate the folder you want to add and click the “Add This Folder to Pictures” button.

After File Explorer closes, click once to open the folder you just added in the Photos app. Once inside, click the three-dot button in the top-right corner followed by the Slideshow option in the drop-down menu.

Your display(s) will grow dark, and the slideshow will begin.

You can view specific images in a slideshow by holding down the CTRL key while selecting each image in the folder. You can also select a string of images at once by holding down the SHIFT button while selecting the first and last images.

In both cases, right-click after selecting your images and select the "Open" option on the pop-up menu. Once the Photos app loads---if it's set as your default---start the slideshow as instructed.

This method does not use the Photos app. Instead, it relies on built-in tools in File Explorer. You can view pictures in a slideshow located in any folder, whether it's on your PC, a USB stick, or an external drive.

For instance, if you have pictures stored in the Downloads folder, you can select any image and view them all in a slideshow, even if they’re all divided into separate subfolders.

First, click the folder icon located on the taskbar. This opens File Explorer.

Navigate to the folder storing your pictures and single-click on any image to select it. The “Manage” tab appears along with the “Picture Tools” option on the toolbar. Click this new “Picture Tools” entry followed by the “Slideshow” button on the resulting drop-down menu.

Your displays(s) will grow dark, and the slideshow will begin.

If you’d rather just view pictures in a specific subfolder, enter that folder, select an image, and follow the steps.

Similar to the Photos app, you can view specific images in a slideshow by holding down the CTRL key while selecting each image in the folder. You can also select a string of images at once by holding down the SHIFT key while selecting the first and last images.

However, unlike the Photos app, select "Picture Tools" in both cases followed by "Slideshow" to watch your selected pictures in a presentation.

This is simple: Just right-click on any image displayed during the slideshow. You’ll see this pop-up menu as a result:

As shown, you can change the speed, shuffle or loop your pictures, and so on.

This menu does not appear during slideshows within the Photos app.

Welcome to the Desktop Guide for Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), a UI framework that is resolution-independent and uses a vector-based rendering engine, built to take advantage of modern graphics hardware. WPF provides a comprehensive set of application-development features that include Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML), controls, data binding, layout, 2D and 3D graphics, animation, styles, templates, documents, media, text, and typography. WPF is part of .NET, so you can build applications that incorporate other elements of the .NET API.

There are two implementations of WPF:

.NET version (this guide):

An open-source implementation of WPF hosted on GitHub , which runs on .NET. The XAML designer requires, at a minimum, Visual Studio 2019 version 16.8 . But depending on your version of .NET, you may be required to use a newer version of Visual Studio.

Even though .NET is a cross-platform technology, WPF only runs on Windows.

.NET Framework 4 version:

The .NET Framework implementation of WPF that's supported by Visual Studio 2019 and Visual Studio 2017.

.NET Framework 4 is a Windows-only version of .NET and is considered a Windows Operating System component. This version of WPF is distributed with .NET Framework. For more information about the .NET Framework version of WPF, see Introduction to WPF for .NET Framework .

Program with WPF

WPF exists as a subset of .NET types that are, mostly located in the System.Windows namespace. If you have previously built applications with .NET with frameworks like ASP.NET and Windows Forms, the fundamental WPF programming experience should be familiar, you:

• Instantiate classes
• Set properties
• Call methods
• Handle events

WPF includes more programming constructs that enhance properties and events: dependency properties and routed events .

Markup and code-behind

WPF lets you develop an application using both markup and code-behind , an experience with which ASP.NET developers should be familiar. You generally use XAML markup to implement the appearance of an application while using managed programming languages (code-behind) to implement its behavior. This separation of appearance and behavior has the following benefits:

Development and maintenance costs are reduced because appearance-specific markup isn't tightly coupled with behavior-specific code.

Development is more efficient because designers can implement an application's appearance simultaneously with developers who are implementing the application's behavior.

Globalization and localization for WPF applications is simplified.

XAML is an XML-based markup language that implements an application's appearance declaratively. You typically use it to define windows, dialog boxes, pages, and user controls, and to fill them with controls, shapes, and graphics.

The following example uses XAML to implement the appearance of a window that contains a single button:

Specifically, this XAML defines a window and a button by using the Window and Button elements. Each element is configured with attributes, such as the Window element's Title attribute to specify the window's title-bar text. At run time, WPF converts the elements and attributes that are defined in markup to instances of WPF classes. For example, the Window element is converted to an instance of the Window class whose Title property is the value of the Title attribute.

The following figure shows the user interface (UI) that is defined by the XAML in the previous example:

Since XAML is XML-based, the UI that you compose with it's assembled in a hierarchy of nested elements that is known as an element tree . The element tree provides a logical and intuitive way to create and manage UIs.

Code-behind

The main behavior of an application is to implement the functionality that responds to user interactions. For example clicking a menu or button, and calling business logic and data access logic in response. In WPF, this behavior is implemented in code that is associated with markup. This type of code is known as code-behind. The following example shows the updated markup from the previous example and the code-behind:

The updated markup defines the xmlns:x namespace and maps it to the schema that adds support for the code-behind types. The x:Class attribute is used to associate a code-behind class to this specific XAML markup. Considering this attribute is declared on the <Window> element, the code-behind class must inherit from the Window class.

InitializeComponent is called from the code-behind class's constructor to merge the UI that is defined in markup with the code-behind class. ( InitializeComponent is generated for you when your application is built, which is why you don't need to implement it manually.) The combination of x:Class and InitializeComponent ensure that your implementation is correctly initialized whenever it's created.

Notice that in the markup the <Button> element defined a value of button_Click for the Click attribute. With the markup and code-behind initialized and working together, the Click event for the button is automatically mapped to the button_Click method. When the button is clicked, the event handler is invoked and a message box is displayed by calling the System.Windows.MessageBox.Show method.

The following figure shows the result when the button is clicked:

Input and commands

Controls most often detect and respond to user input. The WPF input system uses both direct and routed events to support text input, focus management, and mouse positioning.

Applications often have complex input requirements. WPF provides a command system that separates user-input actions from the code that responds to those actions. The command system allows for multiple sources to invoke the same command logic. For example, take the common editing operations used by different applications: Copy , Cut , and Paste . These operations can be invoked by using different user actions if they're implemented by using commands.

The user experiences that are delivered by the application model are constructed controls. In WPF, control is an umbrella term that applies to a category of WPF classes that have the following characteristics:

• Hosted in either a window or a page.
• Have a user interface.
• Implement some behavior.

When you create a user interface, you arrange your controls by location and size to form a layout. A key requirement of any layout is to adapt to changes in window size and display settings. Rather than forcing you to write the code to adapt a layout in these circumstances, WPF provides a first-class, extensible layout system for you.

The cornerstone of the layout system is relative positioning, which increases the ability to adapt to changing window and display conditions. The layout system also manages the negotiation between controls to determine the layout. The negotiation is a two-step process: first, a control tells its parent what location and size it requires. Second, the parent tells the control what space it can have.

The layout system is exposed to child controls through base WPF classes. For common layouts such as grids, stacking, and docking, WPF includes several layout controls:

Canvas : Child controls provide their own layout.

DockPanel : Child controls are aligned to the edges of the panel.

Grid : Child controls are positioned by rows and columns.

StackPanel : Child controls are stacked either vertically or horizontally.

VirtualizingStackPanel : Child controls are virtualized and arranged on a single line that is either horizontally or vertically oriented.

WrapPanel : Child controls are positioned in left-to-right order and wrapped to the next line when there isn't enough space on the current line.

The following example uses a DockPanel to lay out several TextBox controls:

The DockPanel allows the child TextBox controls to tell it how to arrange them. To do this, the DockPanel implements a Dock attached property that is exposed to the child controls to allow each of them to specify a dock style.

A property that's implemented by a parent control for use by child controls is a WPF construct called an attached property .

The following figure shows the result of the XAML markup in the preceding example:

Data binding

Most applications are created to provide users with the means to view and edit data. For WPF applications, the work of storing and accessing data is already provided for by many different .NET data access libraries such as SQL and Entity Framework Core. After the data is accessed and loaded into an application's managed objects, the hard work for WPF applications begins. Essentially, this involves two things:

Copying the data from the managed objects into controls, where the data can be displayed and edited.

Ensuring that changes made to data by using controls are copied back to the managed objects.

To simplify application development, WPF provides a powerful data binding engine to automatically handle these steps. The core unit of the data binding engine is the Binding class, whose job is to bind a control (the binding target) to a data object (the binding source). This relationship is illustrated by the following figure:

WPF supports declaring bindings in the XAML markup directly. For example, the following XAML code binds the Text property of the TextBox to the Name property of an object using the " {Binding ... } " XAML syntax. This assumes there's a data object set to the DataContext property of the Window with a Name property.

The WPF data binding engine provides more than just binding, it provides validation, sorting, filtering, and grouping. Furthermore, data binding supports the use of data templates to create custom user interface for bound data.

Graphics & animation

WPF provides an extensive and flexible set of graphics features that have the following benefits:

Resolution-independent and device-independent graphics . The basic unit of measurement in the WPF graphics system is the device-independent pixel, which is 1/96th of an inch, and provides the foundation for resolution-independent and device-independent rendering. Each device-independent pixel automatically scales to match the dots-per-inch (dpi) setting of the system it renders on.

Improved precision . The WPF coordinate system is measured with double-precision floating-point numbers rather than single-precision. Transformations and opacity values are also expressed as double-precision. WPF also supports a wide color gamut (scRGB) and provides integrated support for managing inputs from different color spaces.

Advanced graphics and animation support . WPF simplifies graphics programming by managing animation scenes for you; there's no need to worry about scene processing, rendering loops, and bilinear interpolation. Additionally, WPF provides hit-testing support and full alpha-compositing support.

Hardware acceleration . The WPF graphics system takes advantage of graphics hardware to minimize CPU usage.

2D graphics

WPF provides a library of common vector-drawn 2D shapes, such as the rectangles and ellipses. The shapes aren't just for display; shapes implement many of the features that you expect from controls, including keyboard and mouse input.

The 2D shapes provided by WPF cover the standard set of basic shapes. However, you may need to create custom shapes to help the design of a customized user interface. WPF provides geometries to create a custom shape that can be drawn directly, used as a brush, or used to clip other shapes and controls.

A subset of WPF 2D capabilities includes visual effects, such as gradients, bitmaps, drawings, painting with videos, rotation, scaling, and skewing. These effects are all achieved with brushes. The following figure shows some examples:

To provide high-quality text rendering, WPF offers the following features:

• OpenType font support.
• ClearType enhancements.
• High performance that takes advantage of hardware acceleration.
• Integration of text with media, graphics, and animation.

Customize WPF apps

Up to this point, you've seen the core WPF building blocks for developing applications:

• You use the application model to host and deliver application content, which consists mainly of controls.
• To simplify the arrangement of controls in a user interface, you use the WPF layout system.
• You use data binding to reduce the work of integrating your user interface with data.
• To enhance the visual appearance of your application, you use the comprehensive range of graphics, animation, and media support provided by WPF.

Often, though, the basics aren't enough for creating and managing a truly distinct and visually stunning user experience. The standard WPF controls might not integrate with the desired appearance of your application. Data might not be displayed in the most effective way. Your application's overall user experience may not be suited to the default look and feel of Windows themes.

For this reason, WPF provides various mechanisms for creating unique user experiences.

Content Model

The main purpose of most of the WPF controls is to display content. In WPF, the type and number of items that can constitute the content of a control is referred to as the control's content model . Some controls can contain a single item and type of content. For example, the content of a TextBox is a string value that is assigned to the Text property.

Other controls, however, can contain multiple items of different types of content; the content of a Button , specified by the Content property, can contain various items including layout controls, text, images, and shapes.

Although the main purpose of XAML markup is to implement an application's appearance, you can also use XAML to implement some aspects of an application's behavior. One example is the use of triggers to change an application's appearance based on user interactions. For more information, see Styles and templates .

The default user interfaces for WPF controls are typically constructed from other controls and shapes. For example, a Button is composed of both ButtonChrome and ContentPresenter controls. The ButtonChrome provides the standard button appearance, while the ContentPresenter displays the button's content, as specified by the Content property.

Sometimes the default appearance of a control may conflict with the overall appearance of an application. In this case, you can use a ControlTemplate to change the appearance of the control's user interface without changing its content and behavior.

For example, a Button raises the Click event when it's clicked. By changing the template of a button to display an Ellipse shape, the visual of the aspect of the control has changed, but the functionality hasn't. You can still click on the visual aspect of the control and the Click event is raised as expected.

Data templates

Whereas a control template lets you specify the appearance of a control, a data template lets you specify the appearance of a control's content. Data templates are frequently used to enhance how bound data is displayed. The following figure shows the default appearance for a ListBox that is bound to a collection of Task objects, where each task has a name, description, and priority:

The default appearance is what you would expect from a ListBox . However, the default appearance of each task contains only the task name. To show the task name, description, and priority, the default appearance of the ListBox control's bound list items must be changed by using a DataTemplate . Here is an example of applying a data template that was created for the Task object.

The ListBox retains its behavior and overall appearance and only the appearance of the content being displayed by the list box has changed.

Styles enable developers and designers to standardize on a particular appearance for their product. WPF provides a strong style model, the foundation of which is the Style element. Styles can apply property values to types. They can be applied automatically to the everything according to the type or individual objects when referenced. The following example creates a style that sets the background color for every Button on the window to Orange :

Because this style targets all Button controls, the style is automatically applied to all the buttons in the window, as shown in the following figure:

Controls in an application should share the same appearance, which can include anything from fonts and background colors to control templates, data templates, and styles. You can use WPF's support for user interface resources to encapsulate these resources in a single location for reuse.

The following example defines a common background color that is shared by a Button and a Label :

Custom controls

Although WPF provides a host of customization support, you may encounter situations where existing WPF controls do not meet the needs of either your application or its users. This can occur when:

• The user interface that you require cannot be created by customizing the look and feel of existing WPF implementations.
• The behavior that you require isn't supported (or not easily supported) by existing WPF implementations.

At this point, however, you can take advantage of one of three WPF models to create a new control. Each model targets a specific scenario and requires your custom control to derive from a particular WPF base class. The three models are listed here:

User Control Model A custom control derives from UserControl and is composed of one or more other controls.

Control Model A custom control derives from Control and is used to build implementations that separate their behavior from their appearance using templates, much like most WPF controls. Deriving from Control allows you more freedom for creating a custom user interface than user controls, but it may require more effort.

Framework Element Model . A custom control derives from FrameworkElement when its appearance is defined by custom rendering logic (not templates).

I doubt that

I generally use the “pause updates” feature the day before I give a presentation. It should stop windows doing any updates/reboots while you’re delivering a talk :)

Sadly, it seems that the presentationsettings.exe is only available on Windows 10 PRO, not on home.

Microsoft Event 2024 live blog: All the Surface and Windows 11 AI announcements as they happen

Tune in on may 20 at 1pm et for the latest windows 11 and surface announcements from microsoft.

Microsoft is hosting a special press event on May 20 in Seattle, where the company is expected to unveil new Surface hardware powered by Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon X Series SoCs, as well as detail how it plans to add next-generation AI experiences to Windows 11 this year.

Unfortunately, the event is not being streamed live, but we will be on the ground to cover the announcements as they happen. So, to follow the event along with us, bookmark this page and return here on May 20 at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) for our complete event coverage. We will be posting snippets, quotes, and images from the speakers.

We will be on the ground bright and early on May 20 at Microsoft's headquarters in Seattle to bring you all the announcements. The event will begin at 10 am PT (1 pm ET) and last about an hour.

What are we expecting to see? New Surface hardware is a Surface Pro and Surface Laptop powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Series chips. Both devices should have updated displays and, on the laptop side, a new keyboard deck with a haptic touchpad.

We're also expecting to see new Windows 11 features, many of which will be tied to Microsoft's AI efforts. A new "AI Explorer" feature will enable several next-generation AI experiences, such as Recall and Snapshots, which will record everything you do on your computer and store it as a memory for you to recall later using natural language.

AI Explorer will also be able to see what's currently on screen and provide contextual prompts and suggestions based on what it can see with a feature called Screen Understanding. You can learn more about AI Explorer and its planned feature set in my in-depth write-up.

We're just one day away from Microsoft's big event. Tomorrow, we're expecting Microsoft to unveil its vision for a new era of the Windows PC. Microsoft and Qualcomm have worked together over the last three years to bring to market an experience that hasn't been possible in the Windows space before.

We will see hardware and software come together to enable incredible new AI experiences, and Windows on Arm will be the foundation of this new generation of Windows devices. The Windows PC is about to get good , and Windows on Arm is about to have its moment in the spotlight. 

Microsoft isn't the only company we're expecting to see new Qualcomm-powered hardware from today. The leaks started pretty early, and one of those laptops we're hoping to get a closer look at is the Snapdragon X-powered Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 . Fingers crossed!

Windows on ARM is going to be a big focus today. It's been around for a while, but with the arrival of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite platform, it's finally getting a real kick in the pants. But what the heck does it all mean anyway? We've got a full explainer on Windows on ARM for you to catch up with all the backstory to this point.

Windows on ARM is going to become a huge deal, finally, but there will be folks that are worried about making the switch. Especially when it comes to using their regular applications. Will they work OK? Will you need to make any changes to how you work? The good news is that you don't need to worry. Even Google Chrome is native for ARM now. We've got an explainer that'll tell you everything you need to know . 

Want to catch up on what Microsoft should be announcing today? We first saw leaks of a new Snapdragon powered Surface Pro back in April. Today's the big Microsoft event, so, you know, we'll soon know how accurate this was.

Where the magic happens...

30 minutes until kick off. We're expecting a new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, both powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chips. The Surface Laptop is expected to feature a new design, the first design refresh the Surface Laptop line has ever seen...

We're also expecting to hear more about AI. Microsoft is expected to unveil some next-gen AI features for Windows 11 today, which will be exclusive to new PCs launching with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chip, at least at first. 

Looks like we're about to begin! Satya Nadella now on stage

Satya is setting the stage. Telling us that PCs will soon be able to anticipate what we want, and our intent. And it starts with Copilot.

"It's pretty early still on this platform shift. The fundamental driving force behind this AI wave are these scaling laws."

Today, we're going beyond the cloud, to the device. AI functionality on your PC is happening. 

Microsoft announces "a new category" of devices. An entirely new class of Windows Pcs, engineered to unleash the power of AI: Copilot+ PCs!

Copilot+ PCs are the combination of Windows, Systems, and Silicon coming together to deliver unique AI experiences.

Yusef Mehdi now on stage to talk more about what makes a PC a "Copilot+" PC.

"We've made a huge leap forward in technology with these PCs. They are the most powerful PCs ever built."

Copilot PCs have an NPU that can run 40 trillion operations per second. 

58% faster than MacBook Air M3!

Copilot PCs have batteries that can last "all day."

Copilot is being integrated across Windows. In File Explorer, Edge, Notifications, Settings, and more.

Microsoft is now demoing a "phone call" between you and Copilot. You can ask Copilot to help you out in a task. In this example, the user is playing Minecraft and is asking how to create a sword. Copilot is able to see what's in his inventory.

Copilot here is contextually and visually aware. You can ask it to help with whatever is on-screen.

Microsoft announces Windows Recall. It's a feature that uses AI to help you find everything you've done on your computer, using natural language.

Recall leverages the power of AI to make it possible to access anything you've seen on your PC.

Windows Recall is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs.

Windows watches everything you do, but it's all handled on device. Nothing is sent to the cloud.

Recall is able to bring up snapshots based on your specific search criteria. If you're trying to find a dress you were looking at a few days ago in Edge, you can just describe the dress to Recall and it will bring you back to the moment when that dress was on-screen.

Recall includes a timeline interface that lets you scroll back in time depending on whether your search criteria has multiple results.

Everything Recall does is handled locally on the device. Microsoft will not use any of the data it's captured to train its AI models. It's all yours, and nobody elses.

"We're weaving AI through every layer, from chip, to system, to cloud."

We're now getting another Recall demo, this time with a break down of how the technology works.

There are a number of different models built into Windows 11 to make this happen. These are deeply integrated, not bolted on, Pavan Davuluri says.

There's an incredibly robust approach to privacy. You can pause, stop and delete captured content. You can even filter out specific apps or websites so Recall can't see it.

There are more than 40 AI models here that bring Recall and the Windows Copilot Runtime together.

The Windows Photos app can now understand what it's seeing. It will suggest things to edit based on the photo you have open.

Now getting a demo of Copilot being able to help during gaming. You can ask it for tips and, based on what it can see, will suggest things.

We're now hearing from Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm about how everyone is coming together for Copilot+ PCs.

"Intel, Qualcomm, and AMD are all in."

16GB RAM minimum on these Copilot+ PCs. 

Notably, only Qualcomm is ready with a Copilot+ chip right now. Intel and AMD's Copilot+ chips seemingly won't be here until later.

Microsoft says it's rebuilt Windows 11 inside out for Arm.

Now touting incredible performance, beating the MacBook Air M3.

Microsoft is highlighting how most of the apps you probably use are now natively compiled for Windows on Arm.

Announcing Prism, a new emulation layer for Windows on Arm that is 20% faster.

Brett Ostrum now on stage. It's Surface time.

New Surface Laptop and Surface Pro announced.

As expected, the new Laptop has a new design. Thinner bezels, haptic touchpad.

It's 80% faster than Surface Laptop 5. 

The new Surface Laptop beats the MacBook Air in battery life benchmarks. Incredible!

Now getting a demo showing how the Surface Laptop beats the MacBook Air in pretty much all tasks. 

Adobe is bringing more of the creative cloud to Windows on Arm soom, including Premiere Pro.

Curiously, no time spent with Surface Pro yet.

Now talking about Live Captions, which is now able to translate languages in real-time from live or pre-recorded audio.

Now it's time for Surface Pro!

Surface Pro is 90% faster than Surface Pro 9. Crazy.

Confirmed: The new Surface Pro has an OLED display with HDR.

And a quad-HD camera!

The keybord is now called Surface Pro Flex Keyboard. It can be used attached or detached.

Now talking about image generation on Windows. Cocreator, lets you "explore the full range of your imagination."

You can use Cocreator to bring to life a sketch. 

Just as an aside, the new Surface Pro still has that venting gap around the chassis. That means it's using the same chassis as the Surface Pro 9, and not the thinner Surface Pro X chassis.

Quick demo of CapCut, using the NPU to remove the background in a video. This is now three times faster on the new Pro compared to Pro 9.

Surface Pro and Surface Laptop are just the start, says Brett Ostrum.

Although it doesn't appear we're getting any more Surface hardware today.

All the major Windows hardware makers are on-board with Copilot+. Many shipping new hardware this summer with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chips.

Lenovo, Dell, Acer, ASUS, Samsung are all shipping Copilot+ PCs.

Microsoft Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 announced with Snapdragon X Elite — everything you need to know

This is a huge moment for Microsoft

In a rather secretive media-only event the day before Build 2024 , Microsoft has just announced the laptops we were waiting for — Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 with Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chipsets.

It would be fair to say we were left a little disappointed in March to see these debut with Intel Core Ultra for business customers only. But as it turns out, Redmond has been sitting on something special with what the company is calling a range of "Copilot+ PCs."

Microsoft says that this new generation of Copilot + PCs is up to 58% faster than the MacBook Air M3 , and that GPT-4o capability is coming to Copilot within Windows 11. As you would expect, this new AI-focused initiative is being spearheaded by the new Surfaces — both starting at $999 and launching on June 18. Let's take a look at what these offer.

This is Microsoft's next big jump into making Arm-powered laptops a thing in the Windows space, and the performance speaks for itself. Microsoft claims it is "80% faster than our previous generation," and in terms of battery life, it can pack up to "22 hours of local video playback." That is mightily impressive when you put it next to the M3 MacBook Air's claim of "up to 18 hours Apple TV app movie playback."

On top of that, Microsoft has confirmed that the Surface Laptop will support three 4K monitors, as well as its own display — clearly a glancing blow at Apple's restrictive monitor support.

As for options, you've got a choice of four colors, and either a 13.8- or 15-inch screen in the Surface Laptop. Pricing starts at $999 and you can pre-order right now for its June 18 release.

Meanwhile, turning our attention to the Surface Pro, you've got one size in that 13-inch display, but this is the first Surface ever to feature a gorgeous new OLED display with HDR.

On top of that, the Flex Keyboard has received some big updates too — including a 14% larger touchpad with haptic feedback, and more carbon fiber to reduce flex and improve the keyboard's performance/durability. Plus, the slim pen is implemented into the keyboard cover itself, and you can use it while disconnected from the Surface Pro itself.

Up top, you've got a new QHD ultrawide webcam built into the bezel, which I'm definitely keen to try out and see whether the resolution lives up to the hype in that small sensor.

For the Pro, you've got a choice of four colors: Sapphire, Dune, Platinum or Black, and you can pre-order one now for $999 — ready to launch on June 18

What these unlock

Of course, Qualcomm's NPU inside these devices (capable of up to 45 trillion operations per second) is used to unlock some key functionality in the form of a vastly improved AI-centric experience in Copilot. Features like Recall give you an impressive device-wide and network-connected contextual search that you can give simple prompts too to gather information.

For example, if you lose a powerpoint presentation in your sea of files, you can ask for "the powerpoint with a purple chart" and it'll know which one you mean. 

Elsewhere, Cocreator is the AI image generation portion of this, where you can sketch and Microsoft will generate what you're trying to create with whatever level of detail you're looking for.

And there is even integration with Xbox too, so if you get to a point of a game where you're stuck, you can query Copilot to help walk you through a particularly difficult section!
