WHAT IS SCIENCE?
Purpose of science is to produce useful models of reality. Most scientific investigations use some form of the scientific method.
Science as defined above, is sometimes called pure science to differentiate it from applied science, which is the application of research to human needs. Fields of science are commonly divided into two major categories.
WHAT IS PHYSICS?
There are two main thrusts in physics :
Keep in memory
SCOPE AND EXCITEMENT OF PHYSICS
Classical physics deals mainly with macroscopic phenomena consisting of the study of heat, light, electricity, magnetism, optics, acoustics, and mechanics. Since the turn of the 20th century, the study of quantum mechanics and relativity has become more important. Today, physics is often divided into branches such as nuclear physics, particle physics, quantum physics, theoretical physics, and solid-state physics. The study of the planets, stars, and their interactions is known as astrophysics , the physics of the Earth is called geophysics , and the study of the physical laws relating to living organisms is called biophysics .
Physics is exciting in many ways. Application and exploitation of physical laws to make useful devices is the most interesting and exciting part and requires great ingenuity and persistence of effort.

The supreme court has asked iit delhi experts to determine the correct answer to an ambiguous question that petitioners have alleged could change the list of top-ranked students.

The Supreme Court has asked IIT Delhi to put together a team of three experts to check whether a physics question in the 2024 NEET-UG paper could have two possible correct answers. The check comes on the back of a challenge from some students who gave the exam, alleging that the list of top-ranked students could change depending on how the students were marked on this question.
The question is in the form of two statements followed by four options. The student is required to pick one option from the four, with the assumption that only one of the four options is correct. The question is as follows:
1. Atoms are electrically neutral as they contain equal numbers of positive and negative charges.
2. Atoms of each element are stable and emit their characteristic spectrum.
The options are:
(i) 1 is incorrect and 2 is correct
(ii) 1 is correct and 2 is incorrect
(iii) 1 and 2 are both incorrect
(iv) 1 and 2 are both correct
The first statement is clear: it refers to the numbers of protons and electrons in an atom. In fact, atoms are electrically neutral by definition; charged atoms are called ions.
The second statement is more ambiguous. It can be split into two, before and after the “and”. The statement after is that the atoms of each element emit a characteristic spectrum. ‘Spectrum’ in this context refers to the range of energy levels an atom can have. It depends on the gaps between the energy levels electrons in the atom can occupy. This in turn depends on the total charge.
Every element has a characteristic spectrum, and this part of statement 2 is correct.
The ambiguity arises in the first part: that “atoms of each element are stable”. This is not always true because of the existence of isotopes, IIT Mandi assistant professor Nirmalya Kajuri said. An isotope of an atom has the same number of protons (and electrons) but a different number of neutrons. Many isotopes are unstable as a result; some isotopes are also more unstable than others.
Unstable atoms can undergo radioactive decay and turn into an isotope of a different element. One way to measure the extent of stability is by the amount of time required for the number of an element’s atoms to halve by radioactive decay, called the half-life.
For example, carbon-8 and carbon-14 are isotopes of the element carbon. The number in each case is the mass number — the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in its nucleus. Carbon-8 has a half-life of around 10 -21 seconds whereas carbon-14 has a half-life of around 5,700 years. Thus, carbon-14 atoms are a lot more stable than carbon-8 atoms.
Stability is arguably also subjective: i.e. no atom is perfectly stable and each atom is only more or less stable than another. This may not have been the meaning of the question in the NEET-UG paper, but if it was, statement no. 2 would be correct only for isotopes like tellurium-128, which has a life of around 10 24 years — 100-trillion times longer than the current age of the universe itself!
Indeed, physicists have noticed that when an atom’s nucleus has a ‘magic number’ of protons or neutrons, it is much more stable. This explains the stability of the atoms of helium, oxygen, calcium, tin, and lead, for example: they have a magic number of protons. Physicists have also predicted that there could be an as yet undiscovered element with a super-heavy atom that doesn’t rapidly decay like other super-heavy atoms by virtue of having a magic number of protons or neutrons.
Thus, of the four options available to students, those that say statement no. 1 is correct are definitely correct whereas statement no. 2 could be right or wrong depending on the isotope in question. That is, both options (ii) and (iv) could be correct.
But for the students at the Supreme Court, the ‘official answer’ appears to turn on what the NCERT chemistry textbook for class XII states: that “all atoms of an element are stable” according to an old version and that “most” atoms are stable according to the new one.
Note: This article was updated on July 23, 2024, to reorder the options according to that listed in the petition to the Supreme Court.

The controversy was fuelled by the particular physics question that purportedly had two valid answers. the question talked about a nuclear composition, with statements bearing differing interpretations, leading to confusion among the students.

NEW DELHI: A panel of three experts from IIT Delhi has told the Supreme Court that there was only one right answer and not two to a controversial physics question that was asked in the NEET-UG 2024 examination.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala on Monday had asked the Director, IIT-Delhi to set up a team of three experts for going into the particular question of physics and submit a report on the correct answer by Tuesday noon.
At the outset, the CJI referred to the contents of the report, and said, "We have received the IIT Delhi report. The IIT Director Rangan Banerjee...constituted a committee from the Department of Physics and they say a team of three experts examined the question. They say that the option four is the correct answer."
The CJI further said that option four, which says that "Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect' is correct".
"The committee has opined clearly that there was only one option which is option four (4). So the National Testing Agency (NTA) was correct in its answer key which was option four (4)," the bench said.
The hearing is underway and presently, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and the NTA, is arguing.
The top court is hearing a clutch of pleas, including those that are seeking a re-test of the controversy-ridden NEET-UG on grounds of question paper leak and other malpractices.
On Monday, the bench faced a piquant situation over a physics question during the day-long arguments.
It was argued that the question had two correct answers and a set of examinees, who gave one particular answer out of the two correct ones, were awarded four marks.
Some lawyers also said there were three sets of aspirants, and one set got minus five for the correct answer, the second secured four marks for another correct answer, and the third group comprised those who skipped it for either want of knowledge or due to the fear of getting negative marks.
This would have a significant impact on the merit list of successful candidates, a bench was was told.
The contention led to the court asking the IIT-D director to constitute a team of three subject experts .
PTI also sought the response of Delhi University Associate Professor and IIT, Madras Alumuni Naveen Gaur on the controversial question.
Professor Gaur, who teaches at Dayal Singh College, said option four is the only correct answer.
More than 23.33 lakh students had taken the test on May 5 at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 overseas.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) is conducted by the NTA for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.
