tiktok text to speech not working

TikTok has unique features that stand out from other apps, including its highly-customizable filters and text-to-speech feature.

This turns text into audio recordings and makes it easier for someone who isn’t a vlogger to record their thoughts in either a sing-songy or dark mode without recording their voice separately.

This platform supports only short videos, so this text-to-speech feature help to create a more engaging video.

When the creator wants to grab the attention of its followers and wants to make them listen to what they have to say or try to communicate within seconds, they’ll use this feature.

The Tiktok Text to Speech option lets you stylize your greeting messages by voice or text with a text-to-speech engine.

Overlaying text in a video is no more a problem. Now there are multiple options available for reading aloud the text that overlays.

This way, it becomes more unified in terms of style by which your viewer can understand your content without having to read or look at anything on top of your original video.

Text Speech tools allow you to change your textual content into audio, allowing anybody who can read or see your software to listen to it.

In the same manner, if your smartphone is not updated. It can show incompatibility with certain apps, so the features of that app will not work correctly.

On iOS phones: go to App Store > look for TikTok > Tap Update!

App developers need to be able to know how to optimize their apps because app stores don’t always show the most recent updates that have been made.

One of the best ways to fix TikTok issues is to uninstall and reinstall TikTok . The process could be a tedious one, but it’s worth it!

This technique can also be applied if you’re experiencing problems using the text-to-speech feature or if its update has bugs or glitches.

When experiencing these problems installing updates, remember that your first step should be to remove and redownload your app by uninstalling it via the App Store (on both iPhone and iPad) or by going into Google Play on Android phones and tablets.

How to Add Text to Speech on TikTok

The Text-to-speech function is only accessible for videos that have this option enabled.

There is nothing complicated about the process as the process is very straightforward. Remember that if the video is too long, it will not be correctly converted.

To use text-to-speech with your next TikTok video, record or add a video as you usually do. For adding text to the video, click the “Aa” symbol.

Enter the message you want the Ai to read loudly, tap the text once more and select text-to-speech.

If you want to listen to your videos, this Text-to-Speech feature of TikTok allows you to do so.

Hit the “Done” button in the upper right corner of the screen after placing the text you want to hear. Your video is now being translated into spoken language.

This option, accessible for both iPhone and Android, is an excellent accessibility feature.

It is not only for visually disabled people but also for individuals who have weak vision. People with such disabilities can also enjoy TikTok’s text-to-speech feature.

Restart Your Device

It may seem primitive. However, this is a true game changer concerning bugs and errors. Restarting your phone may seem like a trivial task.

Still, it does several important things for you: it refreshes and repairs your operating system, fixes many performance-related issues with your device, and tidies up after malfunctions.

Similarly, just having a problem using text to speech feature of TikTok that doesn’t appear on the screen while editing a video.

Text-to-speech is no longer a just arrived feature, though it might sometimes remove for no apparent reason.

So, simply restarting may resolve that issue in just a few moments!

While a hard reset will clear all content from the device, including files and settings that weren’t synced to the cloud, simply restarting (while beneficial) won’t completely erase everything.

You will be able to get the latest app data and settings when you restart your device.

So, to begin, you should try to close all the apps manually, including TikTok, to avoid losing any stored data.

How to Restart iPhone:

Almost all iPhone models have a power switch. Hold down and grip the Power button to access the power menu for about 5-10 seconds. After that, click Restart to turn off and on the device.

How to Restart Android:

Hold down the volume and side button till the power-off slider displays.

The volume key is just on the left-hand side of the phone, while the side button is on the right.

After dragging the slider, let 30 seconds for the device switch off. Force restarts your device if it is frozen or unresponsive.

To reactivate your device, press the side button (just the right-hand side of the iPhone) until the Apple logo appears.

Change the Language Settings

If you are trying to use text to speech widget and TikTok is not working, then this method will help you solve the problem. It may not sound obvious, but it is not.

To fix this problem, All you have to do is change the language of the device and app to English if it’s not English. Once this is done, all the things will start working again!

For this, you need to go to your device’s Language settings and see if the basic one is in English (US). If it is not.

Then here’s what you need to do: Open the Language Settings on your device and set the basic language to English (US). Remove any additional language sets you have installed.

Now, open Tiktok and change its settings to US English. Again, don’t forget that this fix only works if you already set your Device Language to something other than US English.

Update TikTok

The most crucial aspect of app updates is enhancing the app’s performance, adding new features, and fixing bugs.

Hence, if the text-to-speech on the TikTok app crashes, freezes, or stops operating correctly, you may need to upgrade the TikTok app.

By downloading the most recent version of the application, the problem may have been resolved in the latest version.

To repair the text-to-speech function on TikTok, the other and most obvious tip is to check whether the editing feature is available or not yet.

You must open the app store on your device if this feature is unavailable. For Android phones, open the play store, and for iOS users, open the App Store.

In the search box, look for the TikTok app, open the app and look for an Update button in the app description. While being linked with Wi-Fi, most devices updated the applications on their system.

However, if this does not occur, this is how you may manually check for an update. This way, you can update the TikTok app and relaunch it from the store.

In the end, don’t forget to check the working of the text-to-speech feature in TikTok to ensure the successful update of the app.

If still the issue is there, please don’t give up because we still have a few fixes available. Don’t miss out on all the fun stuff TikTok has to offer.

Force Close TikTok

If you have downloaded the TikTok app and have an issue with it, this step will give you some helpful tips on stopping the app and rerunning it.

When you force stop an app, you are closing all the background processes of the app, bringing the current processes to a halt and preventing it from running any new processes.

You should try this only if you have tried all other solutions, including uninstalling and reinstalling the app, updating the app, restarting your device, and clearing the app’s cache.

You can force stop the TikTok app by following these steps.

You can force-stop the app by going to Settings>Apps> TikTok. Then press the app and choose Force Stop.

This will instantly stop the app from working. Another way to do this is by Googling “TikTok force stop.” This is the main way to force-stop the app. Restart the TikTok app after that.

Some TikTok users might have a problem with their TikTok not working properly, and they are not fully utilizing its all features.

This is because many countries have blocked the TikTok app. Moreover, earlier app versions did not support the text-to-speech feature in all countries.

So, this might be the reason that some people face errors in the working of this tool.

If this is the case, you can sort it out by using VPN.

VPN is the easiest way to unblock TikTok, which is restricted in your country. It acts like a shield and protects your IP address, making it the safest way to unblock TikTok.

So, if you are in a country where TikTok is blocked, you can use VPN to bypass the block and use the text-to-speech feature.

When using a VPN, you will select a country where TikTok is available. Then you will have an option to use the text-to-speech feature. But which VPN should you use?

I recommend you to use that VPN which uses maximum servers. More importantly, that VPN should have strong encryption to bypass TikTok.

Contact TikTok Support

If all the steps mentioned above don’t fix the problem and you are still facing the issue in using the text-to-speech feature, then the best thing to do is to tell the TikTok support team about the problem in a friendly way.

To contact their support center first, you must open your TikTok account, click on Me at the bottom, and tap on the menu in the top right corner to access the settings. Then, under Support, choose Report a problem.

Now select “Videos and sounds.

On the next page, click “Other,” then “Need more help?”

Now send them this letter. “Hello, I’m experiencing a problem using my Text to Speech option, which isn’t showing up or working.

I’ve tried several solutions but still can’t fix them. So, please assist me in resolving this problem and advise me on what to do.”

Finally, click the “Report” button to deliver this to TikTok.

After completing the preceding procedures, wait for TikTok support to contact you and respond within 48 hours.

Hopefully, you will get the answer from the support team within the time mentioned above.

Learning how to do text to speech on TikTok may also increase average viewing times and boost overall media performance. It’s no surprise that with so many benefits, successful content creators rely on it as part of their editing toolkit.

While TikTok has expanded its selection to give creators more options to change TikTok text to speech voice options, it’s not always proven the most reliable feature while editing videos, leaving creators asking “why is my text to speech not working on TikTok?”

Content creators rely on social media platform editing tools to function properly in order to streamline the editing process and publish new media efficiently. There have been numerous claims of TikTok text to speech not working periodically, as seen on Reddit threads and other creator forums.

At this time, there has been no identified bug to be fixed, creators have simply experienced the occasional glitch in which the TTS feature won’t work properly or disappears from the editing toolkit altogether for periods of time. There are a few troubleshooting tips to try if you experience TikTok text to speech not working, but this occasional glitching has also resulted in many creators turning to a third-party voice over app to add TTS to their videos.

Pro Tip: Is your video content reaching all its potential viewers? Check out this video accessibility checklist for content creators after this and learn how to increase your media performance.

TikTok text to speech not working can put a delay on your content production process. Creators have to be able to nimbly create, edit, and publish TikTok video content to keep up with ever-changing trends. This kind of glitch or feature fail puts you behind schedule and could result in a domino effect that costs time, money, and even overall performance.

Text to speech not working on TikTok is frustrating, but there are a few ways to troubleshoot it on your end for a possible fix. The most common methods are to:

  • Ensure your app is updated
  • Change the language settings for feature availability
  • Report the problem to TikTok Support
  • Use a VPN to access TikTok
  • Force quit the app
  • Delete and reinstall the TikTok app

When it comes to TikTok text to speech not working, the first thing to do is check and see if your app is up to date. The feature has rolled out for all users in supported areas, but updates on the platform may be causing the editing toolkit to experience a glitch resulting in your TTS not appearing or not functioning properly.

For content creators using iPhones, you may have your apps set to automatically update, however manual updates can be done if something isn’t working correctly. To check if your TikTok app is up to date, go to the App Store and either search for TikTok or click your profile icon in the top right corner to see your purchased apps.

If there is an available update, you’ll be able to touch “Update” and see if this fixes TikTok text to speech not working in the native editing toolkit.

For Android users, text to speech not working on TikTok means checking Google Play (also called Google Play Store) for any updates. A few simple steps will help you see if your app is the most current version:

  • Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device.
  • Touch your account icon at the top.
  • Select manage apps & device.
  • Look at the Overview tab, and touch “Updates available.”
  • See if TikTok is on the list of apps with available updates.

Like iOS devices, you can also choose to have Android apps update automatically to more easily stay up to date and rule this out if you encounter TikTok text to speech not working.

Another reason you may be asking “why is my text to speech not working on TikTok?” is if the language settings are incorrect for your app. The TikTok text to speech feature has been rolled out to all users in supported areas, but if your language settings aren’t correct, you may be experiencing a failure of this feature.

To change the language settings to support TikTok text to speech, go into the TikTok app and to your profile page. Touch the three lines in the top right corner and select “Settings and privacy.” Under the section “Content & Display” you will touch “Language” where you can set your App language and choose a language supported by TikTok TTS.

Some creators have also reported their device language as a cause for text to speech not working on TikTok. Check this setting to ensure it’s not conflicting with platform feature support.

As with any ongoing issues you may experience, TikTok text to speech not working may require reporting the glitch to TikTok Support. On the TikTok app, go to the “Settings and privacy” menu and scroll down until you see “ Report a problem .” From here, you’ll find common solutions to issues experienced on the app and be able to submit a report.

This isn’t the most efficient method for how to fix TikTok text to speech not working, but may help app developers provide updated improvements in the long term.

While content creators are wondering if TikTok will be banned in the United States, its functionality or availability may already be reduced abroad. Aside from accessibility, earlier versions of the app in other countries may not support the text to speech feature at this time.

Creators in other countries may need to use a VPN in order to access TikTok and use the TTS feature. For best results using this method to gain access to TikTok TTS, use a VPN which uses the most number of servers. It’s also important that the VPN you use has strong encryption to bypass blocks.

One of the simplest ways to try and fix TikTok text to speech not working is force quitting the app. Like other apps and electronics, sometimes a reboot is needed to function properly. This is frustrating for content creators who expect their editing toolkits to be functional when they need them, but is a solution that may help fix a malfunctioning app.

If you’ve tried other quick fixes and still experience text to speech not working on TikTok, delete and reinstall the app. Deleting and reinstalling the app will ensure you’ve got the most up-to-date version and potentially resolve any glitches your app was experiencing.

Content creators don’t have time to deal with inconsistent native platform editing tools. Using text to speech voice over is meant to streamline the editing process and provide high-quality audio without the need for hiring voice actors or having to bother with sound editing for recordings. Due to its occasional malfunction or disappearance, many creators have looked to other ways to streamline the editing process and get their media published, including using a voice over app to add TTS to TikTok videos.

Using a voice over app instead of the native editing toolkit provided on TikTok gives creators access to all the features they need for TTS without having to worry about issues. Additionally, third-party TTS apps support more languages, dialects, and emotions than TikTok does, helping media stand out and avoid getting lost in the noise. Powerful TTS apps also give creators direct control over AI speech speed, making sure their stories are told exactly how they want them to sound.

TikTok text to speech not working isn’t unheard of and puts creators behind. Content creators using the native platform editing toolkit for text to speech can use the methods discussed in this article to try and fix the glitch on their own. Instead of resigning to faulty tools, consider switching to a text to speech app instead. The reliability and expanded options of a third-party TTS app will improve your media and boost overall performance.

How to use text-to-speech on TikTok

Anita George

TikTok's text-to-speech is an accessibility feature that lets you put a voice to your videos' on-screen text. If added to your videos, text-to-speech automatically reads selected lines of text from your video out loud. For visually impaired TikTok users, the text-to-speech feature means that they can watch these videos and they won't miss out on what's said by the on-screen text. When reading the text is not possible or is difficult, text-to-speech lets people hear it as well.

If you want to be able to add text-to-speech to your own TikTok videos, we can show you how. Keep reading to learn how to use text-to-speech on TikTok in just a few minutes.

While more than half of U.S. states have already issued TikTok bans on government-issued devices, Montana’s action against the Chinese-owned app is significant as it’s the first state to impose a total ban on the app.

TikTok has experienced a popularity surge in the past couple of years. At first, it was just an app with a lot of dancing and lip-syncing to music. However, nowadays, it’s a platform with many different types of content and content creators. One of the reasons for this boom is the app’s vast, regularly updated editing features like Text-to-Speech.

How to Use Text-to-Speech in TikTok

Instead of just overlaying text in your carefully created video and having your viewers read and watch, text can now be read aloud by a few automatic voice options. In this way, the TikTok video is the center of your viewer’s attention and adds a more organized look to your content.

However, the TikTok editing features like Text-to-Speech can be challenging to use, especially for beginners. Keep reading to learn how to use this feature on different devices and find answers to common questions like changing the voice type.

How to Use Text-to-Speech in TikTok on an Android Device

TikTok features are the same regardless of whether you use an Android or iPhone. However, sounds, filters, and even editing features can be different depending on the region of the world you live in. Usually, new features are only available in the U.S. But since May 2021, TikTok has included the Text-to-Speech feature with a couple of different voices for all users worldwide.

To use the feature, record your video as usual and follow these steps to add Text-to-Speech:

  • Save the video.

Additionally, you can change between the four different voices the platform offers, and you can also change the volume of the voices. These options help ensure that your background music and the voice of the Text-to-Speech are at the desired volume.

How to Use Text-to-Speech in TikTok on an iPhone

As said before, there are no significant differences between using TikTok on an iPhone and an Android phone. So, the steps to add the Text-to-Speech feature are the same. Record a video on the platform as you normally would and then follow these steps to add the feature:

  • Finish editing your video and select “Save.”

iPhone users do have another option when it comes to this feature. There is a way to add the Siri voice to read your text. To do so, the steps are:

How to Use Text-to-Speech in TikTok on an iPad

Additional FAQ

How do i change the text-to-speech voice on tiktok.

If you want to choose among the voices, TikTok already has for you, first make sure that your app is up to date. Once you’ve ensured your app is current, follow these steps:

1. Create a TikTok video.

2. Go to the bottom of the screen and choose “Text,” then input the text you want to convert to speech.

3. Hold down the text box until the words “Text-to-Speech” appear.

4. Select your preferred voice.

Why Is My Text-to-Speech Not Working?

If your Text-to-Speech is not working, the reason could be that your app is not updated. In earlier versions of the app, the feature was not available for every country. Go to the Google Play Store on Android or the App Store on iOS devices to update your app. Search for “TikTok,” and tap on “Update” if the option is available in its official Store entry.

If updating doesn’t solve the problem, you can try to reinstall the app. To do so, hold the TikTok icon and tap on “Delete.” Then, go again to the Google Play Store on Android or the App Store on iOS devices to install TikTok again.

A third solution is to update your phone. If your phone’s operating system is not updated, it can cause compatibility issues with different apps, and some features may not work correctly.

The Time Is Ticking Up

Adding different voices and adjusting them to your liking allows you to tap into your creative potential. Keep in mind that you need to change the duration of the text. Otherwise, it will stay on the screen even after it has been read out loud.

Have you used the Text-to-Speech feature? Do you prefer videos with text-to-Speech or without it? Do you think it was an impactful addition to the TikTok editing mode? Share your thought in the comment section below!

TikTok Text To Speech Not Working (7 Fixes) – 2024

TikTok Text To Speech Not Working

The text to speech is one of the many cool features of the TikTok app. Many people use the text-to-speech option to add robotic voice-over to their videos. I’m pretty sure you have seen hundreds of text-to-speech-based TikToks already.

Many people have been facing issues with TikTok text-to-speech lately. It doesn’t work for some, whereas, for others, the option does not show up.

If TikTok text to speech is not not working for you, you are in the right place. In this article, you will find what to do when TikTok text-to-speech is not working and how to get it back if the option is missing on TikTok.

Why TikTok Text To Speech Is Not Working?

There are many reasons why text to speech is not working for you. Below are some of the common reasons why:

  • Outdated TikTok App : The text to speech option is not available on all the versions of the TikTok app. You must update your TikTok app to get the text to speech option. In some cases, the text to speech feature does not work on older versions of the app as well, so ensure you update TikTok.
  • Set English (US) As Language: As of now, TikTok only supports text to speech for the English language. If you have set a different language other than English as your primary language, you need to change it to get text to speech working on TikTok.
  • App Glitch: TikTok is known for many bugs, like not being able to favorite videos , can’t trim videos, can’t share videos , and more. A bug on the current version of TikTok you are using might be stopping you from using the text to speech option. Updating the app should help you in this regard.
  • Cache Problems: As you use TikTok, cache files get accumulate every other day. After a couple of weeks, TikTok cache files will occupy a lot of storage space on your phone and may, in turn, make your app not work properly.

Fix TikTok Text To Speech Not Working

To fix TikTok text to speech not working, start by changing the default language to English (US). Ensure you are using the updated TikTok app and select Aa icon while creating a new TikTok, and select Text To Speech option. Configure the TTS the way you like and tap the Done button.

Now that you know the basic reasons why text-to-speech is not working on TikTok, let’s see how to fix it fast.

If the text to speech option started not to work suddenly, force restarting the app should help you fix the problem. I have faced a similar situation where a particular feature suddenly won’t work on TikTok. No matter what I do, the same issue pops up again.

The simple tip to fix the problem is to force close TikTok and open it again. Force close means you have to close the app from the background entirely and not just minimize it. Once reopened again, the text to speech option should start working.

1. Set The Right Language

One of the main reasons why text to speech does not work on TikTok is that you set the wrong language on the app.

Currently, TikTok only supports text to speech option in English (US) language. So you must ensure you set the English US as your default language on the app.

To set English US as the default language on your TikTok app, follow the steps below.

Open your TikTok profile.

Tap the three lines icon from the top right corner of the screen.

Tap Settings and Privacy .

Tap Language .

change tiktok language

Now set the App language, Preferred language, and Translation language as English US.

After changing the language, quit and re-open TikTok and try to use the text to speech option now.

2. Update TikTok

Many people have managed to get TikTok text to speech again by updating the app. If it’s been a while since you updated TikTok, you will probably use an older version.

Older versions of the TikTok may not have the TTS feature or a bug makes the text to speech option unavailable to you.

So all you need to do is update TikTok on your Android or iOS device and try to use the text to speech option again.

Update TikTok on Android:

  • Open Google Play Store
  • Search for TikTok
  • See if an Update button is available. If yes, tap the Update button and wait for a few seconds for it to complete.
  • Once updated, open TikTok and see if it works this time.

Update TikTok on iOS:

  • Open App Store
  • Tap your profile picture on the top right corner of the screen.
  • Scroll down and see if TikTok is listed under the Upcoming Automatic Updates section.
  • Tap the Update button right next to the app name to instantly update the app.

With the newer versions of TikTok come new features and options. If text to speech option was not previously available to you, you should get it after updating the app.

Updating TikTok will also help you to Fix ‘Current Resolution Is Not Supported’ and Fix TikTok This Effect Doesn’t Work With This Device – 2023

3. Uninstall and Reinstall TikTok

If updating TikTok didn’t help you or you are using the latest version of TikTok, then you need to uninstall and reinstall the same. If the TikTok app gets corrupted for any reason, certain features will not work, or the app will keep crashing.

Before proceeding to uninstall and reinstall TikTok, remember that all the drafts will be cleared as soon as you uninstall the app . If necessary, take a backup and only then proceed to uninstall the app.

On Android:

Tap and hold the TikTok app icon.

Tap Uninstall .

On the pop-up that appears, tap OK/uninstall.

Once uninstalled, open Google Play Store.

Search for TikTok .

Tap the Install button and wait for a while.

After installing TikTok, log into your account and see if the TTS feature is now available.

Long tap on the TikTok icon.

Tap Remove App

Tap Remove again to confirm.

Open App Store.

Tap Get and install the app.

Once installed, log in to your account.

Ensure you download and use the official and original TikTok app from Play Store or App Store. Avoid using modded versions of TikTok or TikTok downloaded from third-party websites.

4. Clear TikTok App Cache

Huge TikTok app cache files are known for various problems making the app not work correctly. Clearing the TikTok app cache has helped many people solve problems like TikTok not working properly or lagging too much.

Clearing the TikTok app cache should help you get text to speech working.

For starters, there are two ways to clear TikTok app cache. The first option is to use the built-in option inside the TikTok app, and the second is to manually clear app cache.

Open the  TikTok  app

Tap the  Menu  icon on the navigation bar.

Tap  Settings and privacy  option.

Scroll down and tap  Cache and cellular data.

Tap the  Clear cache  button.

Clear TikTok Cache

Wait for a few seconds and reopen TikTok.

You have successfully cleared the TikTok app cache.

Opetion #2 :

This only works with Android devices.

Open Settings on your phone.

Tap Apps/Manage Apps.

Find TikTok and tap on it.

Tap the Clear Data button.

Tap Clear Cache.

Confirm clearing the cache on the popup that appears.

Clearing the app data and app cache is entirely different. Removing the cache file does not result in any data loss, and it does not log you out. On the other hand, if you clear the app data, you’ll be logged out of the app, and all drafts will be deleted as well.

5. Report The Problem And Contact TikTok

Suppose none of the troubleshooting steps like updating TikTok, changing the default language, uninstall and reinstalling the app or clearing the cache didn’t help you fix the problem. In that case, the next thing to do is to report the problem and contact TikTok support.

Follow the steps below to contact TikTok to report a problem:

  • Open the TikTok app on your smartphone (Android and iOS)
  • Head to your profile
  • Tap on the  three dots icon  on the top right corner of the screen
  • Under Support, tap on  Report a problem
  • From the list of topics, select  Account, and Profile
  • Select a random issue listed here
  • Below the solution, you’ll see a ‘ Is your problem resolved ‘ option. Tap on  No.
  • Tap on the  Still have problem  option.
  • Explain the issue on the field that appears and, if possible, upload a few screenshots.

Report a problem TikTok

6. Update Your Phone OS

Although it’s not for sure that updating your phone operating system will fix the problem, but it’s worth giving it a shot.

If your phone is not running the latest operating system version, it may suffer from any bugs or certain apps won’t work properly. So you updating Android or iOS can help you.

  • Open Settings
  • Go to About Phone
  • Select Updates
  • See if a new update is available.
  • If a new update is available, tap the Update button and wait until its done.
  • Tap General
  • Tap Software Update
  • Wait for a few seconds and see if a new software update is available.
  • If yes, tap Download and Install and wait till it’s done.

During the software update process, your phone will restart multiple times. Wait for the process to complete.

text to speech tiktok doesn't work

TikTok’s Text-to-Speech is both a great accessibility feature for people with visual and reading impairments and a tool to create enjoyable content. While Text-to-Speech is available on devices like tablets or phones via the operating system, it’s relatively forward-thinking for a social app like TikTok to make it available within the app. Other platforms like Twitter and Facebook don’t make use of this feature. Instagram does auto-caption stories but only if someone is already speaking in the video.

The feature doesn’t come without controversy, however. TikTok changed the original voice after the actor filed a lawsuit claiming she had never agreed to be featured in the app. The new voice is less of a monotone than the original and seems to be just as popular. Creators use it to narrate their videos, as an accessibility tool, and to have a little fun by seeing what words the bot can (or cannot) pronounce.

If this is something you’re interested in, here’s how to set it up:

  • Record your video.
  • When you’ve finished recording, press the Text button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Type what you want to say and press elsewhere on the screen to finish the text.
  • Press and hold the text you just typed out.
  • Select “Text-to-Speech.”

Students Are Likely Writing Millions of Papers With AI

Illustration of four hands holding pencils that are connected to a central brain

Students have submitted more than 22 million papers that may have used generative AI in the past year, new data released by plagiarism detection company Turnitin shows.

A year ago, Turnitin rolled out an AI writing detection tool that was trained on its trove of papers written by students as well as other AI-generated texts. Since then, more than 200 million papers have been reviewed by the detector, predominantly written by high school and college students. Turnitin found that 11 percent may contain AI-written language in 20 percent of its content, with 3 percent of the total papers reviewed getting flagged for having 80 percent or more AI writing. (Turnitin is owned by Advance, which also owns Condé Nast, publisher of WIRED.) Turnitin says its detector has a false positive rate of less than 1 percent when analyzing full documents.

ChatGPT’s launch was met with knee-jerk fears that the English class essay would die . The chatbot can synthesize information and distill it near-instantly—but that doesn’t mean it always gets it right. Generative AI has been known to hallucinate , creating its own facts and citing academic references that don’t actually exist. Generative AI chatbots have also been caught spitting out biased text on gender and race . Despite those flaws, students have used chatbots for research, organizing ideas, and as a ghostwriter . Traces of chatbots have even been found in peer-reviewed, published academic writing .

Teachers understandably want to hold students accountable for using generative AI without permission or disclosure. But that requires a reliable way to prove AI was used in a given assignment. Instructors have tried at times to find their own solutions to detecting AI in writing, using messy, untested methods to enforce rules , and distressing students. Further complicating the issue, some teachers are even using generative AI in their grading processes.

Detecting the use of gen AI is tricky. It’s not as easy as flagging plagiarism, because generated text is still original text. Plus, there’s nuance to how students use gen AI; some may ask chatbots to write their papers for them in large chunks or in full, while others may use the tools as an aid or a brainstorm partner.

Students also aren't tempted by only ChatGPT and similar large language models. So-called word spinners are another type of AI software that rewrites text, and may make it less obvious to a teacher that work was plagiarized or generated by AI. Turnitin’s AI detector has also been updated to detect word spinners, says Annie Chechitelli, the company’s chief product officer. It can also flag work that was rewritten by services like spell checker Grammarly, which now has its own generative AI tool . As familiar software increasingly adds generative AI components, what students can and can’t use becomes more muddled.

Detection tools themselves have a risk of bias. English language learners may be more likely to set them off; a 2023 study found a 61.3 percent false positive rate when evaluating Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exams with seven different AI detectors. The study did not examine Turnitin’s version. The company says it has trained its detector on writing from English language learners as well as native English speakers. A study published in October found that Turnitin was among the most accurate of 16 AI language detectors in a test that had the tool examine undergraduate papers and AI-generated papers.

Schools that use Turnitin had access to the AI detection software for a free pilot period, which ended at the start of this year. Chechitelli says a majority of the service’s clients have opted to purchase the AI detection. But the risks of false positives and bias against English learners have led some universities to ditch the tools for now. Montclair State University in New Jersey announced in November that it would pause use of Turnitin’s AI detector. Vanderbilt University and Northwestern University did the same last summer.

“This is hard. I understand why people want a tool,” says Emily Isaacs, executive director of the Office of Faculty Excellence at Montclair State. But Isaacs says the university is concerned about potentially biased results from AI detectors, as well as the fact that the tools can’t provide confirmation the way they can with plagiarism. Plus, Montclair State doesn’t want to put a blanket ban on AI, which will have some place in academia. With time and more trust in the tools, the policies could change. “It’s not a forever decision, it’s a now decision,” Isaacs says.

Chechitelli says the Turnitin tool shouldn’t be the only consideration in passing or failing a student. Instead, it’s a chance for teachers to start conversations with students that touch on all of the nuance in using generative AI. “People don’t really know where that line should be,” she says.

The Best Galaxy AI Features to Try on Your Samsung Phone

Now that Galaxy AI is available on more devices, these are the features you should check out.

text to speech tiktok doesn't work

Circle to Search

When Samsung announced the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year, it didn't just introduce a trio of new phones. It also debuted Galaxy AI, a suite of software features available on its newest devices, as well as the Galaxy S23 family, Galaxy S23 FE , Galaxy Tab S9 lineup and its latest foldables .

Read more : AI Is Changing Our Phones, And It's Just Getting Started

Galaxy AI is Samsung's attempt at infusing more AI into its smartphone interface following the runaway success of  ChatGPT . The biggest areas where you'll see Galaxy AI at work on the Galaxy S24 are in its photo-editing features language translation capabilities and a new feature called Circle to Search , which lets you launch a Google search just by circling an object on screen.

After reviewing the Galaxy S24 Ultra, I realized that not every Galaxy AI feature is actually useful. But Circle to Search and other tools, such as Samsung's instant language translation in text messages, show there's promise behind the hype surrounding AI.

Galaxy AI launched on the Galaxy S24 series and later came to other devices through a software update. An April press release announcing support for additional languages also hinted that Galaxy AI may arrive on even more devices in the future. After listing the current devices that support Galaxy AI, the announcement ended by saying "with more coming soon."

The expansion suggests Samsung sees Galaxy AI as being a key part of its mobile devices moving forward.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra showing the new Circle to Search feature.

Circle to Search, as the name implies, lets you launch a Google search for just about anything on your phone's screen just by drawing a circle around it. See a delicious-looking brunch dish in your Instagram feed? Just circle it, and Google will pull up recipes and nearby restaurants with similar dishes. It's a little bit like Google Lens, except you can search for almost anything on your phone's screen rather than having to snap a picture first.

Read more:  Best Android Phone of 2024

In my time with the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Circle to Search seems most useful for shopping, looking up recipes or discovering nearby restaurants or points of interest. But I think there's further potential for a feature like this. For example, you can add additional text queries to go along with whatever you've circled, which can help narrow down results. Combining text and image inputs the right way could end up making it much easier to get the search results you want immediately rather than having to scroll through multiple options.

But it's worth noting that Circle to Search isn't exclusive to supported Galaxy devices; it's also on certain Pixel phones too .

Chat Assist

The Galaxy S24 Ultra showing the new chat translation feature

The Galaxy S24 Ultra showing the new chat translation feature

Chat Assist is a blanket term for three new features in the Messages app: Chat translation (translates text messages into different languages), Writing style (rewrites texts in different tones before you send them, like Google's Magic Compose ) and Spelling and grammar (checks messages for errors). But the one that impressed me the most is chat translation.

With just a couple of taps, I converted an entire chat thread into another language without having to copy and paste text or switch between apps. When I received an incoming message written in Korean from one of my coworkers, the Messages app automatically asked if I wanted to translate it into English. Samsung also announced support for new languages in April, including Arabic, Indonesian and Russian. New dialects such as Australian English, Cantonese and Canadian French will also soon be available, and the company is bringing Romanian, Turkish, Dutch and Swedish languages later this year.

This could be helpful for frequent travelers and those who regularly communicate with family members or colleagues who speak a different native language. And even though I'm not using it on an everyday basis, seeing text messages automatically translate in real time as I scrolled through my messaging history was impressive.

Live Translate

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Language translation was clearly a big area of focus for Samsung when developing Galaxy AI. The company added translation capabilities to the native phone app as well with a new feature called Live Translate. When making a phone call, just tap the Live Translate button, and Samsung will translate the call on both ends in real time. An automated voice informs the person on the other end that the call is being translated. Once you're finished speaking, Samsung will repeat your speech in the desired language so that the person on the other side can understand it, and vice versa.

As someone who has done a lot of international traveling in the past year, I could see how this could have been useful for tasks like making restaurant reservations and buying event tickets abroad. But it can also feel a bit awkward to use since it can be hard to tell when it's your turn to speak. Regardless, the new support for additional languages should make this feature more useful.

Instant Slow-mo

Instant Slow-mo on the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

On the Galaxy S24 series, you can see how any video clip in the Gallery app will look in slow motion just by pressing and holding the screen. It's not a must-have feature, but it's a lot of fun to play around with. However, I wish it were just as easy to save clips in slow motion after previewing them. You have to tap on the pencil icon below the video clip to do so.

Generative Edit

The Galaxy S24 Ultra showing the new Generative Edit feature

The Galaxy S24 Ultra showing the new Generative Edit feature.

Generative Edit lets you move, resize and erase objects in photos, much like Google's Magic Editor tool. There's a reason the two features are similar -- Samsung is using Google's underlying technology to power the feature.

Still, that doesn't mean Generative Edit and Magic Editor are exactly the same. Samsung watermarks images that were edited with Generative Edit, unlike Google, which offers multiple results to choose from compared to Samsung's sole result.

Features like Generative Edit and Magic Editor  raise questions about authenticity in smartphone photos at a time when misinformation on the internet is already a concern. But when used responsibly, Generative Edit can make it possible for anyone to apply photo edits on the fly without any knowledge of Photoshop or other extra software.

Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra Now Has a Titanium Design

text to speech tiktok doesn't work

These are just a handful of the new Galaxy AI features Samsung launched on the Galaxy S24 series. But they're the best at demonstrating how AI can bring functionality that feels genuinely new and practical to smartphones. Some of Samsung's other Galaxy AI additions didn't leave as strong of an impression on me, either because I didn't find them useful or they were too limited. Take the writing style option in Chat Assist, for example: Most of Samsung's suggestions sounded too unlike me to feel helpful. The professional option sounded like an email, while the social-themed option just peppered my words with hashtags.

It's also unclear whether Galaxy AI will remain free for Samsung users, since the fine print on the Galaxy S24 Ultra's product page hints that the company could charge for such features after 2025.

Regardless, the current iteration of Galaxy AI feels like a strong start and makes me curious about where Samsung will take it in the future -- especially as it develops new features for other devices like foldables and tablets .

UBC Applied Science adding 338 new domestic student spaces starting in 2024

PhD Researcher in BioProducts Institute Lab

April 12, 2024

The UBC Faculty of Applied Science is adding 338 new domestic seats across the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. This will increase opportunities for Canadian students, and increase the number of engineers available to work on the grand, twin challenges of climate change and human inequity.

Starting in fall 2024, the Faculty will gradually add 180 spaces in undergraduate chemical, computer, and integrated engineering, and 58 spaces in biomedical engineering — all at UBC Vancouver. One hundred undergraduate engineering spaces will be added at UBC Okanagan.

“UBC Applied Science graduates the world over are helping solve the twin, grand challenges of climate change and human inequity,” said James Olson, Dean, UBC Faculty of Applied Science. “Thanks to the BC Government’s investment into engineering education, there’ll soon be even more engineers trained to create a cleaner, more equitable economy where everyone can thrive.”

Woman student speaker speaks at a podium, flanked by BC flags and in front of a UBC banner

The expansion opens up more impactful, high-paying engineering careers for students like Coralie Tcheune, a fifth-year Applied Science undergraduate student. "My experience in Applied Science has been instrumental in shaping my career trajectory. The BC Government’s recent investment in STEM education not only opens doors for more students but also demonstrates a commitment to fostering innovation and opportunity in British Columbia.”

At the announcement event, Tcheune spoke about how the education, professional development opportunities offered at UBC have helped build her technical skills and given her workplace experience, all before even graduating.

The announcement was made at UBC by BC’s Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation, the Honourable Brenda Bailey.

“The students who will be filling these hundreds of seats at UBC will help increase the supply of talent into the province’s rapidly expanding tech sector,” said Bailey. “These graduates will be rewarded with well-paying careers while helping to advance health care and research to improve life for British Columbians, and build our clean, innovative economy of the future.”

The announcement also added new student seats within the faculties of medicine, pharmaceutical sciences and science. UBC’s total of 778 new spaces will be added over six years, including an investment of $5.4 million in capital funding to equip and renovate labs and classrooms, and a total of $17.7 million in start-up and on-going operating funding over the first three years of the planned expansion.

Europe’s A.I. ‘Champion’ Sets Sights on Tech Giants in U.S.

Mistral, a French start-up considered a promising challenger to OpenAI and Google, is getting support from European leaders who want to protect the region’s culture and politics.

Arthur Mensch and another person talk on a stage in front of a big screen showing a picture of Mr. Mensch.

By Liz Alderman and Adam Satariano

Liz Alderman and Adam Satariano visited Mistral’s headquarters in Paris as part of their reporting.

Arthur Mensch, tall and lean with a flop of unkempt hair, arrived for a speech last month at a sprawling tech hub in Paris wearing jeans and carrying a bicycle helmet. He had an unassuming look for a person European officials are counting on to help propel the region into a high-stakes match with the United States and China over artificial intelligence .

Mr. Mensch, 31, is the chief executive and a founder of Mistral , considered by many to be one of the most promising challengers to OpenAI and Google. “You have become the poster child for A.I. in France,” Matt Clifford, a British investor, told him onstage.

A lot is riding on Mr. Mensch, whose company has shot into the spotlight just a year after he founded it in Paris with two college friends. As Europe scrambles to get a foothold in the A.I. revolution , the French government has singled out Mistral as its best hope to create a standard-bearer, and has lobbied European Union policymakers to help ensure the firm’s success.

Artificial intelligence will be built rapidly into the global economy in the coming decade, and policymakers and business leaders in Europe fear that growth and competitiveness will suffer if the region does not keep up. Behind their worries is a conviction that A.I. should not be dominated by tech giants, like Microsoft and Google , that might forge global standards at odds with the culture and politics of other countries. At stake is the bigger question of which artificial intelligence models will wind up influencing the world, and how they should be regulated.

“The issue with not having a European champion is that the road map gets set by the United States,” said Mr. Mensch, who just 18 months ago was working as an engineer at Google’s DeepMind lab in Paris, building A.I. models. His co-founders, Timothée Lacroix and Guillaume Lample, also in their 30s, held similar positions at Meta.

In an interview at Mistral’s spartan, whitewashed offices facing the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris, Mr. Mensch said it “wasn’t safe to trust” U.S. tech giants to set ground rules for a powerful new technology that would affect millions of lives.

“We can’t have a strategic dependency,” he said. “That’s why we want to make a European champion.”

Europe has struggled to produce meaningful tech companies since the dot-com boom. As the United States turned out Google, Meta and Amazon, and China produced Alibaba, Huawei and ByteDance, which owns TikTok, Europe’s digital economy failed to deliver, according to a report by France’s Artificial Intelligence Commission . The 15-member committee — which includes Mr. Mensch — warned that Europe was lagging on A.I., but said it had the potential to take a lead.

Mistral’s generative A.I. technology allows businesses to launch chatbots, search functions and other A.I.-driven products. It has surprised many by building a model that rivals the technology developed at OpenAI, the U.S. start-up that ignited the A.I. boom in 2022 with the ChatGPT chatbot. Named after a powerful wind in France, Mistral has rapidly gained ground by developing a more flexible and cost-efficient machine-learning tool. Some big European firms are beginning to use its technology, including Renault, the French auto giant, and BNP Paribas, the financial services company.

The French government is giving Mistral its full-throated support. President Emmanuel Macron has called the company an example of “French genius” and had Mr. Mensch for dinner at the Élysée presidential palace. Bruno Le Maire, the country’s finance minister, frequently praises the company, while Cédric O, the former France digital minister, is an adviser to Mistral and owns shares in the start-up.

The French government’s backing is a sign of A.I.’s growing importance. The United States, France, Britain, China , Saudi Arabia and many other countries are trying to strengthen their domestic capabilities, setting off a technological arms race that is influencing trade and foreign policy, as well as global supply chains.

Mistral has emerged as the strongest European contender in the global battle. Yet many question whether the company can keep up with large American and Chinese competitors and develop a sustainable business model. In addition to the considerable technological challenges of building a successful A.I. company, the computing power needed is staggeringly expensive. (France says its cheap nuclear power can meet the energy demand.)

OpenAI has raised $13 billion, and Anthropic , another San Francisco firm, has raised more than $7.3 billion. Mistral has so far raised roughly 500 million euros, or $540 million, and earns “several million” in recurring revenue, Mr. Mensch said. But in a sign of Mistral’s promise, Microsoft took a small stake in February, and Salesforce and the chipmaker Nvidia have backed the start-up.

“This could be one of the best shots that we have in Europe,” said Jeannette zu Fürstenberg, the managing director of General Catalyst and a founding partner of La Famiglia, two venture capital firms that invested in Mistral. “You basically have a very potent technology that will unlock value.”

Mistral subscribes to the view that A.I. software should be open source, meaning that the programming codes should be available for anyone to copy, tweak or repurpose. Supporters say allowing other researchers to see the code will make systems safer and fuel economic growth by speeding its use among businesses and governments for applications like accounting, customer service and database searches. This week, Mistral released the latest version of its model online for anyone to download.

OpenAI and Anthropic, by contrast, are keeping their platforms closed. Open source is dangerous, they argue, because it has the potential to be co-opted by for bad purposes, like spreading disinformation — or even creating destructive A.I.-powered weapons.

Mr. Mensch dismissed such concerns as the narrative of “a fear-mongering lobby” that includes Google, Microsoft and Amazon, which he said were seeking to cement their dominance by persuading policymakers to enact rules that would squash rivals.

A.I.’s biggest risk, Mr. Mensch added, is that it will spur a workplace revolution, eliminating some jobs while creating new ones that will require retraining. “It’s coming faster than in the previous revolutions,” he said, “not in 10 years but more like in two.”

Mr. Mensch, who grew up in a family of scientists, said he was fascinated by computers from a young age, learning to program when he was 11. He played video games avidly until age 15, when he decided he could “do better things with my time.” After graduating from two elite French universities, École Polytechnique and École Normale Supérieure, he became an academic researcher in 2020 at France’s prestigious National Center for Scientific Research. But he soon pivoted to DeepMind, an A.I. lab acquired by Google, to learn about the industry and become an entrepreneur.

When ChatGPT burst onto the scene in 2022, Mr. Mensch teamed up with his university friends, who decided that they could do the same or better in France. At the company’s airy work space, a corps of sneaker-wearing scientists and programmers now tap busily at keyboards, coding and feeding digital text culled from the internet — as well as reams of 19th-century French literature, which is no longer subject to copyright law — into the company’s large language model.

Mr. Mensch said he felt uncomfortable with Silicon Valley’s “very religious” fascination with the concept of artificial general intelligence, the point when, tech leaders like Elon Musk and Sam Altman believe, computers will overtake the cognitive ability of humans, with potentially dire consequences .

“The whole A.G.I. rhetoric is about creating God,” he said. “I don’t believe in God. I’m a strong atheist. So I don’t believe in A.G.I.”

A more imminent threat, he said, is the one posed by American A.I. giants to cultures around the globe.

“These models are producing content and shaping our cultural understanding of the world,” Mr. Mensch said. “And as it turns out, the values of France and the values of the United States differ in subtle but important ways.”

With his growing clout, Mr. Mensch has stepped up his calls for lighter regulation, warning that restrictions will damage innovation. Last fall, France successfully lobbied in Brussels to limit regulation of open-source A.I. systems in the European Union’s new Artificial Intelligence Act, a victory that helps Mistral maintain a rapid development pace.

“If Mistral becomes a big technical power,” said Mr. O, the former digital minister who led the lobbying effort, “it’s going to be beneficial for all of Europe.”

NPR is defending its journalism and integrity after a senior editor wrote an essay accusing it of losing the public's trust.

NPR's top news executive defended its journalism and its commitment to reflecting a diverse array of views on Tuesday after a senior NPR editor wrote a broad critique of how the network has covered some of the most important stories of the age.

"An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don't have an audience that reflects America," writes Uri Berliner.

A strategic emphasis on diversity and inclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, promoted by NPR's former CEO, John Lansing, has fed "the absence of viewpoint diversity," Berliner writes.

NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff Tuesday afternoon that she and the news leadership team strongly reject Berliner's assessment.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," she wrote. "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

She added, "None of our work is above scrutiny or critique. We must have vigorous discussions in the newsroom about how we serve the public as a whole."

A spokesperson for NPR said Chapin, who also serves as the network's chief content officer, would have no further comment.

Praised by NPR's critics

Berliner is a senior editor on NPR's Business Desk. (Disclosure: I, too, am part of the Business Desk, and Berliner has edited many of my past stories. He did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Berliner's essay , titled "I've Been at NPR for 25 years. Here's How We Lost America's Trust," was published by The Free Press, a website that has welcomed journalists who have concluded that mainstream news outlets have become reflexively liberal.

Berliner writes that as a Subaru-driving, Sarah Lawrence College graduate who "was raised by a lesbian peace activist mother ," he fits the mold of a loyal NPR fan.

Yet Berliner says NPR's news coverage has fallen short on some of the most controversial stories of recent years, from the question of whether former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia in the 2016 election, to the origins of the virus that causes COVID-19, to the significance and provenance of emails leaked from a laptop owned by Hunter Biden weeks before the 2020 election. In addition, he blasted NPR's coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

On each of these stories, Berliner asserts, NPR has suffered from groupthink due to too little diversity of viewpoints in the newsroom.

The essay ricocheted Tuesday around conservative media , with some labeling Berliner a whistleblower . Others picked it up on social media, including Elon Musk, who has lambasted NPR for leaving his social media site, X. (Musk emailed another NPR reporter a link to Berliner's article with a gibe that the reporter was a "quisling" — a World War II reference to someone who collaborates with the enemy.)

When asked for further comment late Tuesday, Berliner declined, saying the essay spoke for itself.

The arguments he raises — and counters — have percolated across U.S. newsrooms in recent years. The #MeToo sexual harassment scandals of 2016 and 2017 forced newsrooms to listen to and heed more junior colleagues. The social justice movement prompted by the killing of George Floyd in 2020 inspired a reckoning in many places. Newsroom leaders often appeared to stand on shaky ground.

Leaders at many newsrooms, including top editors at The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times , lost their jobs. Legendary Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron wrote in his memoir that he feared his bonds with the staff were "frayed beyond repair," especially over the degree of self-expression his journalists expected to exert on social media, before he decided to step down in early 2021.

Since then, Baron and others — including leaders of some of these newsrooms — have suggested that the pendulum has swung too far.

Legendary editor marty baron describes his 'collision of power' with trump and bezos.

New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger warned last year against journalists embracing a stance of what he calls "one-side-ism": "where journalists are demonstrating that they're on the side of the righteous."

"I really think that that can create blind spots and echo chambers," he said.

Internal arguments at The Times over the strength of its reporting on accusations that Hamas engaged in sexual assaults as part of a strategy for its Oct. 7 attack on Israel erupted publicly . The paper conducted an investigation to determine the source of a leak over a planned episode of the paper's podcast The Daily on the subject, which months later has not been released. The newsroom guild accused the paper of "targeted interrogation" of journalists of Middle Eastern descent.

Heated pushback in NPR's newsroom

Given Berliner's account of private conversations, several NPR journalists question whether they can now trust him with unguarded assessments about stories in real time. Others express frustration that he had not sought out comment in advance of publication. Berliner acknowledged to me that for this story, he did not seek NPR's approval to publish the piece, nor did he give the network advance notice.

Some of Berliner's NPR colleagues are responding heatedly. Fernando Alfonso, a senior supervising editor for digital news, wrote that he wholeheartedly rejected Berliner's critique of the coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict, for which NPR's journalists, like their peers, periodically put themselves at risk.

Alfonso also took issue with Berliner's concern over the focus on diversity at NPR.

"As a person of color who has often worked in newsrooms with little to no people who look like me, the efforts NPR has made to diversify its workforce and its sources are unique and appropriate given the news industry's long-standing lack of diversity," Alfonso says. "These efforts should be celebrated and not denigrated as Uri has done."

After this story was first published, Berliner contested Alfonso's characterization, saying his criticism of NPR is about the lack of diversity of viewpoints, not its diversity itself.

"I never criticized NPR's priority of achieving a more diverse workforce in terms of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. I have not 'denigrated' NPR's newsroom diversity goals," Berliner said. "That's wrong."

Questions of diversity

Under former CEO John Lansing, NPR made increasing diversity, both of its staff and its audience, its "North Star" mission. Berliner says in the essay that NPR failed to consider broader diversity of viewpoint, noting, "In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans."

Berliner cited audience estimates that suggested a concurrent falloff in listening by Republicans. (The number of people listening to NPR broadcasts and terrestrial radio broadly has declined since the start of the pandemic.)

Former NPR vice president for news and ombudsman Jeffrey Dvorkin tweeted , "I know Uri. He's not wrong."

Others questioned Berliner's logic. "This probably gets causality somewhat backward," tweeted Semafor Washington editor Jordan Weissmann . "I'd guess that a lot of NPR listeners who voted for [Mitt] Romney have changed how they identify politically."

Similarly, Nieman Lab founder Joshua Benton suggested the rise of Trump alienated many NPR-appreciating Republicans from the GOP.

In recent years, NPR has greatly enhanced the percentage of people of color in its workforce and its executive ranks. Four out of 10 staffers are people of color; nearly half of NPR's leadership team identifies as Black, Asian or Latino.

"The philosophy is: Do you want to serve all of America and make sure it sounds like all of America, or not?" Lansing, who stepped down last month, says in response to Berliner's piece. "I'd welcome the argument against that."

"On radio, we were really lagging in our representation of an audience that makes us look like what America looks like today," Lansing says. The U.S. looks and sounds a lot different than it did in 1971, when NPR's first show was broadcast, Lansing says.

A network spokesperson says new NPR CEO Katherine Maher supports Chapin and her response to Berliner's critique.

The spokesperson says that Maher "believes that it's a healthy thing for a public service newsroom to engage in rigorous consideration of the needs of our audiences, including where we serve our mission well and where we can serve it better."
