Essays About Your Mom: Top 5 Examples and 5 Prompts

Some of the most important memories in our lives involve our mothers. If you need to write essays about your mom, our guide will help.

A mother is a female parent of a child. Mothers nurture their children throughout childhood and, for many, throughout adulthood as well. The desire to support and protect our children is never ending for many mothers.

Motherhood, however, is not always a genetic role. Many people foster or adopt children or find themselves acting in a parental role for someone else’s children. What matters is the effort you put into a motherly role; for most, the instincts are all there.

It can safely be said that a mom is one of the most significant role models one can have in life and one whose influence continues to inspire. I once read a statement that said, ‘one day, you will realize your Mom is the best friend you will ever have.’ That is certainly true for me, and I hope for many of you.

If you are writing essays about your mom, our essay examples should prove inspiring.

5 Top Essay Examples

1. story of my mom by wilbur mckenzie, 2. an open letter to my mom, and all moms by samantha wolf , 3. my mom is a movie star by dan moore, 4. leader of my life: my mother by chelsea gonzales.

  • 5. Your Mom Doesn’t Hate You, She’s Just Trying to Help You by Carly Newberg

5 Writing Prompts On Essays About Your Mom

1. the best memory of your mom, 2. a lesson your mom taught you, 3. what is your mom’s best quality, 4. your mom as a role model, 5. who is your mom.

“My mother believes in me, in everything I do, and is always positive about it. Every decision, task, and every level that I concur, my mom is always there, believing in me that I will succeed. Graduating 5th grade and moving up to 6th grade was a big step, just like graduating 8th grade and moving up to 9th grade was. But my mother believed that I would still do well in school and would enjoy it a lot.”

Mckenzie writes about his mother as his greatest influence and inspiration. He reflects on how his mom always makes sure he is well and how she loves the family unconditionally. He also describes her selflessness, as she volunteers for those in need and raises money for charity. Her mother’s love, selflessness, and encouragement inspire Mckenzie to try his best in everything he does, and he is genuinely grateful for her.

“All I can say is thank you for being an amazing mother and all I want for you is to keep doing what makes you happy and brightens your day. Keep creating and going to the beach just to look at the ocean. Keep running, even if it’s not in marathons and don’t forget how awesome of a mother you are. Keep collecting seashells and spreading your positive energy everywhere you go. I love you, Mom.”

Wolf’s essay is addressed to her own mother and is composed of different notes and letters. According to Wolf, her mother is hardworking, optimistic, and devoted, and she recalls several moments they shared. The moments she describes are heartfelt and profound experiences that many can relate to.

“To this day, she wakes up every morning, marches into our living room, and talks with cancer patients on the phone, lending them her empathy and expertise. It’s amazing, and I wanted her to know I saw all that. I wanted her to know I knew she’s always been a badass. I wanted her to know she’s an inspiration to me, a dynamic, courageous, capable, remarkable person I admire and study every day.”

Moore discusses his mother’s life beyond her role in his life. He briefly tells her life story, then writes about her work for a colon cancer foundation. She spends most of her time consoling and caring for cancer patients; only now is Moore able to appreciate what she is doing. He is in awe at all that his mom has been able to accomplish besides being a great mother to him.

“She utilizes her wisdom by teaching me the ways of life. She rejoices as I apply her teachings in my life and she understands me. The abundance of knowledge my mother has supplied me with continuously fills my life with rare and beautiful treasures.”

In her essay, Gonzales reflects on the spiritual lessons her mom has instilled in her. Her mother is a role model of a strong, Christian woman devoted to her family and God. She is always there for her daughter, giving her advice on how to handle difficult situations. Gonzales aspires to be just like her mother in everything she does, especially when raising her own children.

 5. Your Mom Doesn’t Hate You, She’s Just Trying to Help You by Carly Newberg

“I’m not a parent (yet). However, I hope that when I am, I can take what I’ve learned from the obstacles I’ve faced with my mom, to keep the generational progress moving forward. After all, that is one of the beautiful gifts we’re given on Earth; To learn from the mistakes of our loved ones, map out our route accordingly, do our best to get where we are going, and accept the detours along the way knowing those after us will use them to love harder and live wiser.”

In this essay, Newberg discusses a phenomenon we are all too familiar with: mothers arguing with us. She explains that despite their seemingly curtailing actions, mothers always want what is best for us and are even struggling with whether their decisions are correct. Newberg suggests that we should be understanding of our mothers and use these experiences as lessons for how to parent in the future.

Essays About Your Mom: The best memory of your mom

For your essay, reflect on an experience with your mom that you treasure. Perhaps it is a birthday celebration, a trip out of town, or simply a conversation you had. Describe the events that transpired, how they made you feel, and why you treasure them as you do. Also, consider if your perception of this event has changed. Perhaps it has taught you more than you first thought.

One of a mother’s primary roles is to teach her children essential skills and lessons to prepare them for the future. Think about one or more things your mom taught you, whether life skills, values, or otherwise. You can be as general or in-depth as you want regarding what you’ve learned from your mom, but be sure to explain it adequately.

For an interesting essay topic, write about a quality of your mom’s that you seek to emulate- her patience, kindness, or fortitude. Discuss why you have chosen it, how it is essential to who your mom is, and how you hope to use it in the future.

Essays About Your Mom: Your mom as a role model

Mothers are role models to everyone, not only their kids but also to others they interact with daily. In your essay, you can reflect on a time your mom did something truly admirable that cemented her position as your role model. As with the other essays, describe the events, what you learned, and why you chose this. You may also comment on how it has shaped you as a prospective or active parent. Discuss any aspects of parenthood you would like to emulate and those you would not!

This essay topic may seem simple, but one can learn much about a person from a simple biography and reflection. Give readers a general idea of what your mom does, her role in your life, and how she has made you who you are today; paint a picture of this fantastic woman and why she is so important. You can include something about her background and note how it has influenced her, making her the mom she is. Also, you may consider whether any of her inherited traits have been passed to you.

How to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay About My Mother

Writing about someone close to you, such as your mother, can be a meaningful and rewarding experience. One of the best ways to structure your writing is to use the 5-paragraph essay format.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of writing a 5-paragraph essay about your mother, with detailed examples and lists to help you along the way.

Introduction

The introduction is your chance to hook your reader and provide a preview of what’s to come in your essay. Here are some tips for crafting a strong opening paragraph about mother :

  • Start with a strong opening sentence that grabs your reader’s attention. For example, you could begin with a quote about mothers or an anecdote that illustrates your relationship with your mom.
  • Provide some background information about your mother, such as her name, age, occupation, and any other relevant details to your essay.
  • Explain why you’ve chosen to write about your mother and what makes her so unique to you. This will help your reader understand the significance of your essay.
  • Finally, give a brief overview of the structure of your essay. Tell your reader what they can expect to learn from your writing and how you’ll be organizing your thoughts.

The First Paragraph

The first body paragraph of your essay should introduce your topic (your mother) and provide a thesis statement that ties your focus/theme to your mother’s significance in your life. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Start with a sentence introducing your mother and explaining why she is important to you. For example, you could say, “My mother is the most important person in my life because she has always been there for me, no matter what.”
  • Provide some background information about your mother, such as her age, occupation, and any other relevant details.
  • Explain the focus/theme of your essay. This could be anything from your mother’s resilience in adversity to her impact on your personal growth and development.
  • Finally, provide a clear and concise thesis statement that ties your focus/theme to your mother’s significance in your life. For example, your thesis statement could be, “My mother’s unwavering support has been the driving force behind my success.”

The Second Paragraph

The second paragraph of your essay should provide examples and anecdotes that support the focus/theme you introduced in the first paragraph. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by introducing the specific example or anecdote you’ll be sharing. For instance, you could say, “One of the best examples of my mother’s support came when I was struggling in school.”
  • Share the details of the example or anecdote. This could include specific conversations with your mother, her actions to support you, or challenges you overcame together.
  • Analyze the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. How did her support make a difference for you? What did you learn from the experience? How did it strengthen your relationship with your mother?
  • Tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how this example or anecdote supports your focus/theme and your overall argument.

The Third Paragraph

The third paragraph of your essay should continue to explore the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. Here are some tips for writing this section:

  • Start by introducing a new example or anecdote that supports your focus/theme. For instance, you could talk about how your mother helped you through a difficult time.
  • Provide details about the example or anecdote, just as you did in the previous paragraph.
  • Analyze the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. What did you learn from this experience? How did it shape who you are today?
  • Again, tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how this example or anecdote supports your overall argument.

The Fourth Paragraph

The fourth paragraph of your essay should provide a counterargument or opposing viewpoint. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by acknowledging that there may be other perspectives on your mother’s impact on your life. For example, you could say something like “While my mother has had an overwhelmingly positive impact on my life, I know that not everyone has had the same experience.”
  • Introduce a counterargument or opposing viewpoint. This could be something like “Some people might argue that a mother’s impact on her child is overstated and that other factors, such as genetics or upbringing, are more important.”
  • Analyze the counterargument or opposing viewpoint. Explain why you disagree with this perspective and provide evidence to support your argument. This could include personal anecdotes, statistics, or expert opinions.
  • Finally, tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how your counterargument supports your overall argument and reinforces the importance of your mother’s impact on your life.

The Fifth Paragraph

Your essay’s fifth and final paragraph should summarize your main points and provide a conclusion. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by summarizing the key points you’ve made in your essay. Remind your reader of your focus/theme, thesis statement, and the examples and anecdotes you’ve shared.
  • Provide a final analysis of your mother’s impact on your life. Explain why she is so important to you and what you’ve learned from your experiences with her.
  • End with a firm conclusion. This could be a call to action, a personal reflection, or a final thought that ties everything together. For example, you could end with something like, “My mother will always be my role model and inspiration. I hope I can be as supportive and loving as she has always been to me someday.”

Example essay about my mother

My mother is the most important person in my life. She has been there for me through thick and thin, always supporting and encouraging me to be the best I can be. Her unwavering love and dedication have been a constant source of strength for me, and I am forever grateful for everything she has done for me. Firstly, my mother is the epitome of selflessness. She always puts the needs of others before her own, and she never complains about it. Whether it is cooking my favorite meal or staying up all night to help me with my homework, she never hesitates to go the extra mile to ensure I am happy and well taken care of. My mother is sage and insightful. She has a wealth of life experience and a deep understanding of human nature, and she has always been there to offer me sage advice whenever I need it. Her words of wisdom have helped me navigate many difficult situations and have given me the tools to face any challenge that comes my way. I believe that my mother is the embodiment of hard work and perseverance. She has always been a role model for me when it comes to putting in the effort to achieve one’s goals. Watching her work tirelessly day in and day out to provide for our family has taught me the value of hard work and the importance of never giving up. Also, my mother has a great sense of humor and an infectious zest for life. Even in the most challenging of times, she always finds a way to make me laugh and to see the bright side of things. Her positive attitude and sunny disposition have taught me the importance of looking on the bright side and never giving up hope. In conclusion, my mother is the most amazing person that I know. Her selflessness, wisdom, hard work, and sense of humor have impacted my life immeasurable, and I am so grateful for everything she has done for me. I hope that one day I can be half the person that she is, and that I can make her as proud of me as I am of her.

Example 2: A Portrait of Strength and Love: My Mother

In the tapestry of my life, there is one thread that shines brighter than all others – the unwavering presence of my mother. She is not just a figure in my life; she is the cornerstone, the guiding light, and the epitome of love and strength. In this essay, I aim to paint a vivid portrait of the woman who has shaped me into who I am today. Body: My mother’s love knows no bounds. It is a force of nature, gentle yet unyielding, like the steady flow of a river that nourishes all in its path. From the moment I came into this world, she cradled me in her arms, her touch a soothing balm that could heal any wound, physical or emotional. Her love is not confined to mere words; it is expressed through her actions, through the countless sacrifices she has made for our family. One of the most remarkable traits of my mother is her boundless strength. She has weathered storms that would have broken lesser souls, yet she emerged from the tempest stronger than ever. I have seen her face adversity with grace and courage, never once faltering in her resolve. She is the backbone of our family, the one we turn to in times of need, knowing that her strength will carry us through even the darkest of days. But my mother is not just a beacon of strength; she is also a source of wisdom and guidance. Her words are infused with a depth of knowledge that can only come from a life well-lived. Whenever I am faced with a difficult decision or grappling with uncertainty, I know that I can turn to her for counsel, and she will always steer me in the right direction. Despite the many roles she juggles – mother, wife, daughter, friend – my mother always finds time to nurture her passions and pursue her dreams. Whether it’s tending to her garden, losing herself in a good book, or simply enjoying a quiet moment of reflection, she reminds me of the importance of self-care and staying true to oneself. Conclusion: In the tapestry of my life, my mother is the brightest thread, the one that adds color and meaning to the fabric of my existence. She is my rock, my confidante, and my greatest source of inspiration. As I navigate the journey of life, I am grateful to have her by my side, guiding me with her love, wisdom, and unwavering strength. My mother is not just a woman; she is a force of nature, and I am blessed to call her mine.

what makes a mother unique essay

The most memorable moment of becoming a mother often involves a single day. You gave birth, or the child someone else baked inside comes into your life. It’s a before, and an after. But that first day is only the beginning of an identity shift that is ongoing and eternal. The person you are after the first year of motherhood is not the same person you are after year three, year 10 or year 40.

That’s why, in honor of Mother’s Day, we decided to look at the whole messy, glorious, complicated story of identity and motherhood.

We have short essays about how becoming a mother changed the way we look at ourselves, from our relationships to our own ambitions, as well as failure, body image and more, written by Amber Tamblyn, Casey Wilson, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Angela Garbes, Robin Tunney, Jennifer Weiner and several others. There’s a piece by Jenni Gritters about how motherhood rewires your brain, and another by Pooja Lakshmin, M.D., a perinatal psychiatrist, about how not to lose yourself when you become a parent.

During this coronavirus pandemic, it can be hard to know who we are as people, as the barriers between our public and maternal selves have collapsed in ways we never considered. But if there’s one thing to take away from all of these stories, it’s that your identity as a mother isn’t fixed; it’s likely to change in ways that will surprise and maybe even delight, as you and your children grow.

A Guide to Parenting Now

Some anxious parents are choosing “sleepunders” picking kids up just before bedtime  — or even staying over with them. Here are the pros and cons to that approach.

Many parents feel the need to stuff their children’s days full of activities to keep them entertained and engaged. But boredom has its virtues .

Being a modern parent means juggling many opinions on how to do it correctly. The good news is that there’s no one way to do it right .

22 Women Share the Real Joys of Being a Mom

Yes, with parenthood comes the lack of sleep, vacation, and official sick days. But these honest and inspirational stories about being a mom capture the fantastic benefits that also come with the "job."

Teaching the Most Important Lessons

"While consoling his little brother over a ripped batman costume, I overheard my son say, 'Don't worry, just take it to mom, she can fix anything.' That reminded me of my own childhood—I also believed that my dad 'could fix anything' (admittedly, I still do). Parenthood is the single most important role any human will ever play in the life of another. There is nothing more fulfilling than knowing that by simply living lives that are intentional and authentic, my husband and I are, in many ways, teaching our children valuable lessons in love, empowerment, compassion, and humanity."

—TQ Evans, Richmond, Virginia; Prende Pants

Bonding Over the Little Things

"It's easy to think of diaper changing as a chore, but I like to give it a positive spin and think of it as a chance to bond with your little one. I love singing silly songs and tickling my daughter's tummy when I'm changing her diaper. You don't get too many opportunities to share eye contact and get in close during the day, especially with a whirling toddler, so if you can distract them, and make it a happy time, then diaper changing is your chance. Add to that a trusted brand like Huggies—I like their Little Movers Diapers —and you can be sure your little one is comfortable, supported, and dry, and you both will be much happier for it."

—Julia Dennison, New York

Experiencing Every Emotion

"Nothing else can produce the joy or broken heart that motherhood allows. I couldn't imagine going through life without feeling that spectrum of emotion. There are wonderful days when I feel my cup runneth over. There are days that I want to run away and question every decision I have ever made. Feeling it all, good or bad, gives my life purpose. Motherhood is walking around with all of your nerve endings raw and exposed. It is the most extreme measure of being alive."

—Vivienne Borne, Maryland

Having Fun Together

"My kids are spread apart in age so we always have a little bit of everything going on! When they were little I struggled to find things that I could do a bazillion times without getting bored. I once secretly threw away all the "cherries" for Hi Ho Cherry-o ("Oh man, all the pieces are missing!"). I love playing games with them now, from escape rooms to board games and puzzles. As they've gotten older it's shifted (in their minds) from me playing with them to them playing with me, but I'll take it! I love that if I ask 'who's in for a game?' they're all there in a heartbeat."

—Dahlia Rizk, New Hampshire; Buckle Me Baby Coats

Watching Kids Be Kids

"The pure joy of just watching them be kids and re-living all those first moments when they have discovered how to do things on their own!"

—Sarah Ganjon, Maryland

Mom Confessions: If I Could Spend a Day Without My Kids I Would...

Shaping a mind.

"I love being a mom, even with all of its trials and lessons. The ability to help shape a young mind and allow her to blossom as she is ready is miraculous. As an African-American mom, I also have the privilege of teaching my daughter self-love and self-respect at an early age. Giuliana will know from birth how valued she is in our home and that she has a valid place in this world. Literally every choice I make—from the historical museums we visit, like the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, to the nutritious foods I give her and the organic skin care I put on her body—are to give her a great start in life. It's a beautiful thing."

—Kelley, Washington, D.C.; Curasalve

Being Healed by Their Joy

"Their smiles, their giggles, and their pride in new accomplishments! I can have the worst day, come home and listen to my children discuss their days and what they learned, or overhear them giggling playing a game or watching a movie—and poof! All is right in my world!"

—Jen Jackson, Texas

Never-Ending Entertainment

"My favorite thing about being a mom is the cute and funny things kids think about. Like when my older son thought the moon was Mars for some reason. Or, when my 6-year-old said he wants to buy a 'goat truck' after seeing his cousin's Dodge Ram. It's like my personal comedy show every day!"

— Elena Ledoux , Las Vegas; Mommy GO, Matcha GO, Superb Maids

Finding Purpose in My Life

"I was 33 when I had my first child, so I know I had a life before children. But, I can't remember what it was like! Having my children was such a life-altering experience. I always was looking for the purpose in my life and when I had my children I found it. I love being a mother. I know I am good at it.

That doesn't mean I don't make my share of mistakes. Every day I add money to one of my three children's 'money for therapy for all the things I did to screw you up' account. But I am a better person for knowing my children and I am very honored to be their mother. And I wouldn't trade my best day before kids for my worst day with kids!"

—Kathy Radigan, NY; My Dishwasher's Possessed

Seeing Their Sense of Awe

"There are so many reasons why I love being a mama, but I especially I love the look in their eyes when they discover something new or figure something out that they've been trying to understand for a long time. I love seeing little pieces of myself in them: my propensity to start singing made-up songs randomly, or the way they laugh. I love that I get the privilege of shaping the minds of three beautiful children and providing a wonderful example for them."

—Monicha Wimbley, Tampa, Florida; MonichaWimbley.com

Sharing the Moments

"I love being a mom because of the hugs, the giggles, and the grins. When my kids are happy, so am I. They amaze me every day with their new words and discoveries. They have taught me to be more patient, more loving, and much more appreciative of every moment we have together as a family."

—Sara Sleyster, Iowa

Using My Imagination

"Because I'm a big kid at heart, I enjoy revisiting the magic of childhood through their experiences. Plus, I have a reason to celebrate make-believe characters like the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny."

—Vivian Lee, San Francisco

Sharing Our Culture

"As an Afro-Latina woman married to a Korean dude and mama to four multicultural, multiracial, and multilingual children we call our mini global citizens, one of the best parts of being their mama is passing our rich culture and heritage to them in an intentional way: through familial stories, books, dolls, toys, music, food and fashion."

—Sonia Smith-Kang, Los Angeles; Mixed Up Clothing

Rising to Any Occasion

"Motherhood is knowing joy, even while experiencing the hardest trials of life. I have learned to rise to any occasion and found myself lifted to new heights while stretching myself beyond any and all limits I once put upon myself. With rarely a dull moment, I've experienced more adventure in mothering my sons that ever imaginable. Motherhood gives me an excuse to stay young forever, kicking off my shoes and letting down my hair while enjoying love beyond measure. Motherhood is my life, my joy, my passion, my greatest achievement."

—Jacalyn Stanley (aka Lady Ozma), Northern Virginia; Lady Ozma's Journey

Enjoying the Evolution

"Bedtime is the best part of motherhood. Anyone that says anything different is lying! But also watching kids evolve into empathetic, kind human beings who can think for themselves. Like putting money in the bank, bit by bit. You don't realize progress until far down the road. But so worth it!"

—Kate Mayer, Connecticut

Having a Reason to Carry On

"When I wanted to give up because I was a single parent, they pushed me to move ahead. Just waking up and seeing their smiling faces made me want to go another day. Today my children are grown—they are kind, giving, dependable people. And they all love the Lord as I taught them to love and depend on Him."

—Kimberly D. Huey, Dallas (pictured with her three children and three grandchildren)

Feeling Humbled

"For me, the joys of parenthood include: Constantly being humbled—there's nothing like the antics of kids to get you grounded again. After a day of feeling like you aced things at work, your kids remind you that you are just another person they can ask to wipe their butt. Then there's when my kids actually eat and want more of the food I made! (And it's actually healthy and not just chicken nuggets! #momwin). And finally, seeing the individual personalities of each kid shine through. What a gift it is to be able to see them grow."

—Renata Trebing, Houston; Nourish with Renata

Seeing Through Curious Eyes

"My life as a mom is a hectic life that is filled with schedules, diaper changes, feedings, and much more. There are so many things I love about being a mom, but the one that stopped me dead in my tracks was when my 10-month-old son turned to me and said, 'Hi Mama.' Another thing I love is playing on the floor with him and making him laugh so hard that he almost falls over. I love to stop and soak in the world through my son's eyes; just today we were outside feeling and playing with leaves. I love the fact that when my son grows up to be a man, I will have been beside him every step of the way teaching, helping, molding, and loving him. Life is great, but life is even better once you have been blessed to become a mom!"

—Katharine Manley, Alabama

Being a Better Person

"What I love about being a mom is that my son has enhanced my life in so many ways. I am a better wife, worker, friend..."

—Emily Brown, California

Staying Young

"I love that at the age of 33 I can fly a kite, blow raspberries, act like Scooby Doo, look forward with childish excitement to the Smurf's comeback, cut in front of lines with a crying baby, sing-along with Elmo while stopped at traffic lights (with the windows down!), go sled riding at the park, decorate sidewalks with chalk, use both men's and women's restrooms, run through public sprinkler systems, eat cake at children's birthday parties, observe ants, play tag, build cities in the sandbox, order a Happy Meal (for myself), and laugh hysterically at Sponge Bob without looking stupid. All of this and so much more because of the two free-spirited, miniature men in my life."

—Tonya Cary, Pennsylvania

Bursting With Mama Love

"What I love about being a mom is having the chance to see things all shiny and new through my daughter's eyes. She just turned 2, so everything's all about new words, new sounds, and repeating things that she hears (which isn't always one of the greatest things)! It's the best when you are in the I'm-tired-of-being-a-mama mood and your toddler busts out with something awesome. My wee tot's favorite word right now is 'puppy.' She tosses puppy into every short sentence she uses, like, 'I want water…and puppy, please. ' So, the other day, while we were driving, I was blown away when she saw two dogs walking and yelled out, 'Mommy, TWO puppies.' I had to pull over I was bursting with so much mama love!"

—Sarah Lipoff, California

Living in the Moment

"As someone who daydreams and lives in my thoughts, I love being a mom because it forces me to be present and live in the moment with them. This has made me a much happier person."

An Introduction to the Essay

The word Mother is a very pious word and whosoever is called by the name ‘Mother’ is a person who sacrifices and prioritizes her children over anything. Her whole Life revolves around the well-being of her child, their growth, their development, and their welfare. A Mother not just only gives birth to a child but she takes a Lifelong commitment to take care of her child.

The only unconditional love in the world is the mother's love. My mother is my inspiration, my superhero, my best friend, and my guiding light. My life would not have been beautiful without my mother. Through ups and downs and in every step of life, she holds my hand and supports and encourages me. No matter what happens, my mother is always there beside me- cheering me up and motivating me. All mothers in the world are great and so, we should not celebrate their contribution in our life on Mother's Day only, which is 10th May, but every day of the year and throughout their life. It is because no gesture of appreciation is ever enough when it comes to acknowledging our mother. Her selfless love and sacrifice are the precious of all gifts under the sun.

An Essay on Mothers

My Mother- The Multi-Tasker

Mothers play an important role in everyone’s Life since she acts as a Protector, a Friend, and Guide for Life. A Mother does everything selflessly for her child and without any condition. There the love of a Mother is known to be Unconditional.

The way she manages my family with utter dedication and devotion is inspiring. The relationship with my mother is something very hard to explain. I do not merely love her because she is my mother and we should respect our elders. I love her because she is my world and when I was not able to speak and communicate she took care of me, time and time again. The best part about my mother is that even though I have grown older she knows and understands my needs without me speaking a word. I learned kindness and love from her. She taught me no matter how bad a situation might get, only love can improve it in the most effective way. She has been the rock-solid pillar of my life and in every big moment of my life.

My Mother has constantly supported me throughout my entire Life, whenever I am in a danger or in a situation where I am stuck, she has always been there for me, protected me, and guided me. She has been my favorite teacher who has taught me about Life and the beauty of it. She is the essence of truthfulness, sincerity, and lots of love. The only person who holds our family together is my Mother. She cares for everyone in the house and for the ones in need outside the house as well. One of the most beautiful things that I learned from my mother is empathy. Be it strangers or animals, she treats everyone equally which makes her more amazing. Moreover, she taught me to not hurt anyone on purpose and help people whenever possible. Not only this but also she taught me to not differentiate among rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. She says that it is the heart of a person that makes them beautiful and rich and not temporary possessions.

My Mother is my constant source of encouragement, be it in Life or in school for studies. She has always inspired me to do other activities along with my studies. She has taught me to enjoy every aspect of Life and live Life to the fullest. She wants me to do those things in Life as well which she could not do or pursue. She is my backbone for everything. My mother has inspired me through her hard work and sacrifices. She taught me once never to get disheartened by failure and to keep challenging the failure with our honest effort. And one day, failure will pave the path to our success. The strength of facing hurdles and overcoming it is what I have learned from her.

Mothers have never-ending qualities even though they do not get much credit for their goodness and hard work. She binds everyone in the family and plays a very important part in everyone’s Life. Even when I do something wrong in Life, she scolds me but at the same time, she makes me understand and helps me to get out of the situation. She forgives me after every mistake but ensures that I’ve realized my mistake first. She is the most selfless human being I have ever encountered in my life till now.

My mother knows me in and out. Even if I am lying she catches me immediately and I start feeling guilty. We should never lie to our parents and especially, to our mother. They simply do not deserve it. Mothers spend a significant part of their lives making us capable of standing on our own feet. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice their own career and happiness for that. So a mother's trust should never be destroyed. And when it comes to my mother, I would not change a bit about her. She is the best chef, reading partner, and an independent working woman who can balance almost everything with utmost perfection. Even her imperfection makes me proud of her. Without my mother, I would never become a better human being. My Mother is my biggest strength and makes me, even more, stronger when I go through all my ups and downs in life. The best thing she possesses is her patience. The patience she has is difficult for anyone to have. She deals with every situation in the family, in my life, or even in her Life with so much patience because of the reason the family is bonded so strongly. It is the responsibility of every child to appreciate their Mothers and give them the love and respect that Mothers deserve.

Defining a good mother in few words is never an easy task. However in a very simple words we can say that a good mother is the one for whom her child is her world. There are many qualities which I see in my mother which makes her the world’s best mother. She loves her child strongly and deeply without any condition. Apart from showering her love of motherhood she also takes care of her child with a great responsibility.

She is the statue of forgiveness and forgives each and every mistake of ours and also ensures that we realize our mistakes and understand our responsibility. A good mother does every effort to make her child one in a million and sacrifices every comfort of her life so that her child could lead a comfortable life. The selfless love a mother showers on her children is the most valuable thing in this whole world which could never be replaced by anything.

Qualities of a Mother

There are certain natural qualities which already get inherited into a woman on acquiring motherhood. But there are also few qualities which are required for becoming a good mother. The major qualities of a mother are as follows:

Responsible

Acquiring motherhood comes with great responsibility. The responsibility of taking care of child before and after birth is one of the most important qualities of a mother. She is the one who takes care of her child since birth and nurtures him to stand on his own feet.

  • Selfless Love

A mother will always shower her children with her love without anything in return. She always loves her children selflessly in spite of their mischiefs. Her love towards her children always remains the same irrespective of her child’s age.

A mother should always be supportive to their children. She should always stand strong besides her children in all of their ups and downs. She should be always there to support her children in their rightful decisions and interests.

This is the quality which every mother should inculcate on acquiring motherhood. Dealing with kids always requires a high amount of patience as they are still in a growing phase and are not matured enough to understand things at one go. Hence they need to be reminded again and again till they understand and become responsible.

The ability to understand another person’s feelings is called as empathy. A mother should be empathetic towards her child because unless you understand the feelings of your kid you will not be able to understand his/her issue.

Why Mother is Important in our Life?

The importance of mother could be easily understood from the fact that the first word uttered from the mouth of a child is ‘ma ma’. She is the source of life and the reason for our existence. She is the one who can happily sacrifice everything in her life just for the sake of her child’s happiness. Is the first teacher of a child who introduces him to the world and the first best friend with whom we can share all our secrets.

Mothers are the backbone of every family who binds the whole family and unites it into a single but powerful entity. They give us the confidence to face the world and motivate us to achieve success in our life. They are the only one who will never have any ill thoughts against their children and always pray and hope better for them. A good mother acts like a sculptor who moulds her children into beautiful sculptures which are highly appreciated and respected in the society.

My mother is the holy creation of god and a source of providing life to us. She is a sacred statue of selfless love, sacrifices, forgiveness and patience. She is the guiding soul who helps us to progress on the right path and achieve success in our life. Mother’s selfless love towards her children could never be replaced by anything in this world. We as her children should do our best to make her happy and comfortable all the time especially when she becomes old. It is our responsibility to bestow her with the same amount of love, care and understanding as she had showered on us when we were young.

Another way of supporting Mothers is to speak words of affirmation.

Most noteworthy, a Mother’s heart is made of gold. A few words of acknowledgment would fill her heart with happiness. There are probably several ways of doing so. One way is to praise the meal cooked by her. Above all, such acknowledgment should come on a regular basis.

A Mother is a gem in everyone’s life. She is the ultimate source of happiness for a child. Her contributions are certainly too great to imagine. Above all, her love is pure and innocent. To find a Mother who does not love is probably an impossible task.

18 Moms Describe What It Means to Be a Mother

February 11, 2023

What it Means to Be a Mom - Mother's Day

What is motherhood? What does it mean to be a mother? These questions are as challenging to answer as they are simple. Yes, to give birth; yes, to adopt children; yes, to have a family. But being a mother is also about much more than that, isn’t it? There’s some large, overwhelming, and beautiful piece at the center of motherhood that is so hard to put words to. It’s a feeling, not an explanation. Maybe that piece is best called love . If so, it is truly a unique love reserved for the mother/child relationship. And when you’ve felt it, you know it.

Since we’re just a few days away from Mother’s Day, we put this question to 18 moms: “What does it mean to be a mother?” The responses we heard were lovely, inspirational, and downright funny! Read them all below.

“For me, motherhood is seeing the profound value in learning about who your children are, and then encouraging and teaching them to be the best versions of themselves. It is my greatest hope that this acceptance and unconditional love will empower and strengthen my children as well as foster self-confidence and kindness!”

—Courtney Westlake blogger, Blessed By Brenna Blog | Instagram | Facebook

“Motherhood is truly a remarkable gift and a privilege that I hold very close to my heart. To me, being a mother means to be fearless, to be a positive role model, to be a continuous cheerleader for every milestone my children will experience, to demonstrate the abundance of unconditional love that has no end and to cherish the countless memories that is truly priceless.”

—Eluka Moore Co-Founder & Author, Kitchen Club Kids Website | Facebook | Twitter

“To me, being a mother is the greatest job in the world. Helping my girls through all the things life throws them, while also lifting them up so they can reach for the stars and grab one! That’s what being a mom is all about—always being there—the shoulder to cry on, the cheerleader to never give up, the one that gives the standing ovation, the familiar hand to hold.”

—Bobbie Rhoads Founder & President, FunBites LLC Website | Facebook | Twitter

“Being a mother means being completely and totally overwhelmed (in the best possible way) by love, joy, responsibility, and selflessness. Motherhood means sleepless nights, big belly laughs, caterpillars on the coffee table, finger-painting in the kitchen, stubbed toes, and gapped toothed grins. Motherhood has made life more colorful than I ever knew it could be. Being a mom means I have two little people who walk around with my heart and soul in the palms of their sweet, smudgy hands.”

—Lauren Casper Blogger Website | Facebook | Twitter

“To me, being a mother means getting to see all the possibility in the world through your children’s eyes, and also wanting to be the kindest and most generous version of yourself, so that your children can look up to you. On a day to day level, being a mother means being tired, sometimes grumpy and never left alone, and then, in one funny, loving or meaningful moment with your kids, realizing that it’s all completely worth it. Times one million.”

—Cara McDonough Blogger Blog | Twitter | Instagram

“Being a mother means being an emotional blankie for your children. They snuggle with you at night, run to you when they’re hurt, and stand behind you in scary situations. There’s nothing more warm and fuzzy.”

—Maia Haag Co-Founder & President, I See Me! LLC. Website | Facebook | Twitter

“For me, being a mother means it is MY responsibility to give my children the tools they need to live a happy and meaningful life. In the case of my daughters, Lily and Melanie, I wanted to empower them with a skill set that would allow them to create independent careers and avoid the glass ceiling…they are on their way with confidence and the sky is the limit.”

—Renee Sandler Founder & CEO, BLAMtastic® Website | Facebook | Twitter

“Being a mother means, knowing when to talk and knowing when to listen…understanding that there is no learning curve. Every day is an adventure (especially when you are raising three boys…Boy oh Boy oh Boy). I would not trade my best day before my kids were born for the worst day after. Motherhood is: a life time adventure, the hardest non-paying 24 hour job you will ever do, and my greatest achievement !”

—Amy Fazackerley Founder, Lay-n-Go Website | Facebook | Twitter

Being a mom means that “sacrificing my body, my time, my finances, my sleep, and my mental health to raise my kids will be worth it in the end, because life isn’t about me anymore.  I just hope my kids survive my weaknesses, and realize I love them more than anything.”

—Heather Bowcutt KidsEmail Website | Facebook | Twitter

“Parenting is raising a child to be the best they can be. Being a mother is different: it means providing that indescribable feeling of comfort, no matter the age of the child. It’s being that person you call on that makes you feel better and doesn’t even need to say anything.”

—Wendy Hunter, MD Pediatrician & Founder of BabyScience.info Website | Facebook | Twitter

“Being a mother means learning, listening, leading, laughing, loving, and living in the moment . . . all while executing the myriad details of life with aplomb.”

—Rana DiOrio Founder/CEO of Little Pickle Presss Website | Facebook | Twitter

“Motherhood is to sleep with one eye open and always worry. To constantly feel guilty about SOMETHING. To have your heart so filled with love you think it might explode and then have it broken all in the space of less that 60 seconds. To be a guide, coach, cheerleader, policewoman, superhero, ‘kissy monster,’ friend and confidant, even when you have the flu and all you want to do is hide under the covers. To do your best and remember in the hardest of times that the tantrums will pass, teenagers grow out of it, nothing ends a bad parenting moment like a big hug, and most importantly that it’s okay not to be perfect.”

—Tova Leigh Blogger Blog | Facebook

“Being a mother means getting your toddler into his car seat as fast as possible (and without any tantrums) when all he wants is to ‘drive’ the car himself. It means leaving the house earlier so you have a few extra minutes to let him sit in the front seat in the driveway and ‘drive’ before going anywhere. Being a mother means trying to make the best of every situation, choosing your battles, and planning ahead!”

“A mother never says to her child, ‘You owe me.’ This is why her love is boundless, endless, seamless, selfless—unconditional. This is why her love multiplies and divides to embrace her own children and then theirs. There is a Mother Theresa in every mother and she should be celebrated (on Mother’s Day and) every day.”

—Roma Khetarpal Author of The Perfect Parent Website | Facebook | Twitter

“Being a mother, with its challenges and rewards, has shaped me into the person I never imagined I could become. Protecting and advocating for our children is something all mothers strive for, and for me this is especially true for my child with autism who needs me as an advocate and a voice. It’s been the best assertiveness training!”

It’s comforting to hear so many other mothers words that closely resembles the feelings and words that are within myself. We all have the same goals… just different ways of expressing and going about them. If we would allow ourselves to toss aside the external differences and with an open-mind look underneath. We would find that we have more in common with eachother then we sometimes want to believe.

Lacey, that is beautifully said. Thank you! Sometimes differences are really just differences in the way we express ourselves, right? We’re really all after something quite similar. Hope you had a great Mother’s Day!

21 Characteristics of a Good Mom

Categories Raise Happy Kids

Sharing is caring!

These 10 characteristics of good moms aren't hard to learn. You can be a great mom (and you can learn to have these traits, even if parenting is a struggle or you feel overwhelmed).

Parenting is tough work! We’re expected to do all. the. things. And do them well! But what are the characteristics of a good mom ? And how do you get those qualities?

It’s not easy being a mom, especially if you’re feeling insecure as a parent , but I’ve noticed that there are certain things that exceptional moms do well.

And for the rest of us? Luckily, these are good characteristics of a person that we can ALL learn, practice, and improve on. 😉

what makes a mother unique essay

Before you get totally overwhelmed, thinking that there’s no way you can do one more thing, note that these characteristics of a good mother are learned behaviors. They’re character traits that, if you’re not already doing, you can easily add with a little practice.

For each of these, I included a resource or tip to help you get there!

And, if you’re looking for inspiration (or pretty reminders to place on your desk), get theses printable characteristics in the Organized Motherhood Shop .

One of the first things new moms learn (aside from the importance of sleep) is patience.

Newborns cry, toddlers get into everything, and older kids try to test your limits. But it’s difficult for young children to learn patience, especially when adults struggle to model it.

Even on the most difficult days, like when your toddler clearly isn’t patient, staying patient as a mom is important. Not only will it help you model “good behavior” for your child, but it’ll also help you respond to your children with a level head.

Learning to have patience takes practice.

Just like you try to teach a toddler patience (waiting to turn the pages in a book, taking turns with toys, not eating a snack five minutes before dinner, etc.), moms need reminders, too.

Self-care goes a long way in staying patient, but if you’ve been struggling with finding time for self-care, or even if you feel guilty making the time, stop!

Here are some tips to make time for self-care so that you can be a good example of patience (and calm) around your kids.

Consistency is one of the easiest ways to make your child feel secure, yet it’s one of the most difficult things to do as a parent.

We want to be the good parent. The fun parent. The understanding parent.

But the consistent parent? That’s not fun!

parenting manual course - a training for good parents

The lesson on being consistent was one of my favorite sections of the Parenting Manual 1 01 course.

I struggle with giving in when my kids want to stay outside for 10 more minutes. I also make excuses, like when they don’t eat all their dinner and want a cookie (oh, I gave them too much food).

But we’re not doing our kids any favors when we give in.

Instead of teaching them that I’m a reasonable parent, I’m teaching my kids that they should whine when they don’t get their way.

When they go to school, do I really want them whining to their teacher because they would rather have recess instead of a math lesson? No!

By being consistent, you’ll show your kids boundaries. They’ll learn what’s acceptable, and they’ll feel more confident in their own decision-making.

Learning to be consistent, as with most parenting principles, is a difficult lesson. But once you learn how to be consistent, you’ll be amazed at the difference in your kids.

Get the Parenting Manual 101 HERE for the best ways to raise your kids well while keeping your cool.

From a former teacher, this course is filled with practical tips and ideas to be consistent while disciplining in an effective way.

Parenting with Love and Logic

Kids make mistakes. So do parents.

Good moms forgive their kids. Really good moms forgive their kids while helping them learn a lesson.

One of my favorite parenting books, Parenting with Love and Logic , shares tips to teach your kids lessons naturally.

Your child didn’t eat his lunch? Dinner will be delicious.

It takes the pressure off parents to discipline because kids will learn consequences naturally (obviously, it’s still the parent’s job to keep kids safe, so letting your child run in the street probably isn’t recommended as a natural consequence).

It’s ok to be upset when the kids break your favorite coffee mug, and Love and Logic helps you to see when it’s appropriate to show anger and when the kids need to learn from their mistakes.

But whether your kids do something to you or to someone else, forgiveness and lessons learned help them grow into a good person.

If forgiving children is one of the qualities of a good mother, then staying calm is also a requirement.

Motherhood is an emotional experience, and sometimes it’s hard to control your temper, even if you’ve never had a “temper problem” before.

When your patience is low, you’re tired, and you’re feeling stressed, it’s easy to lose your temper.

I’ll be the first to admit that I lose my temper more than I’d like to admit. The best thing that’s been helping me keep my temper in check is the anger management section of The Parenting Manual 101 . It’s perfect for both parents and kids. 😉

Learning to reframe my frustration so that I can stay calm instead of screaming or taking it out on my kids has been life-changing.

I’ll admit – I have days when this is more of a struggle than others, but I love the refreshingly honest way that this course helps you to control your temper and get the kids to manage their frustrations in healthy ways.

Organization isn’t just about keeping the toys and clutter minimized. Staying organized can also mean time management, something many moms struggle with.

If you struggle with organization, especially when it comes to handling your kids’ school papers, projects, activities, and everything else, start by writing everything down. I keep track of my meal plan, kids’ activities, cleaning schedule, and more in the Organized Motherhood Home Binder each week.

what makes a mother unique essay

Once you’ve gotten everything written down in one place, try applying the “touch it once” principle to everything you can.

When you bring in the mail or go through your kids’ papers, file, trash, or do something with them immediately. Your kitchen counters (and your kids’ teachers) will thank you.

You love your kids, but in the daily hustle, remembering to show unconditional love in little ways can be difficult.

When you’re throwing last night’s leftovers in a thermos for your son’s lunch or frantically trying to find your daughter’s shoes in the morning, love is probably the last thing you’re projecting.

Spending a couple extra seconds to hug your child as he runs out the door, make a “good day note” for his lunch box, or snuggle while reading an extra book at nap time is all it takes.

Get the Kids’ Letter Bundle for more “love note” ideas and ways to create special moments for your kids.

Your kids need you to be a good friend. Not to them, but to their friends’ moms. Despite the isolation of 2020, and even if you’re a single mother, parenting isn’t a solo act.

Being a parent forced me to step outside my comfort zone.

On one hand, it was nice to have other moms to commiserate with, but it was also a challenge. I had to talk to that mom on the sideline of my son’s baseball game instead of just snuggling into the couch with a good book, which is what I would’ve done pre-kids.

If you’re struggling to find or maintain friendships in motherhood, or even if you just want to be able to make conversation and exhibit good social skills by relating to the moms in your kids’ classes, I loved the wise advice in Never Unfriended by Lisa-Jo Baker.

Never Unfriended is an awesome book to read if you have toxic relationships or want to avoid them.

Fierce mamas wear their Mama Bear apparel with pride!

There’s a time and place to be fierce, but when it’s necessary, you need to know the best way to pull out the claws.

One time when being fierce is important is during times of medical emergencies or when you need to protect your child.

My kids have food allergies, so I’ve struggled to find a balance with being fierce.

While I have to protect my kids from potentially life-threatening foods, I struggle with being too forceful and offending family members. However, after several situations when people didn’t heed my polite reminders, I’ve realized that it’s ok to be fierce in order to protect my children.

On the other hand, there are times when you should not be fierce, like when you’re working   with your child’s teacher to correct behavior issues.

If it’s not a life-threatening issue, advice from trusted family members, friends, and teachers should be welcome.

Most people have your child’s best interests at heart. Even if you disagree with their opinion, in most situations, it’s best to take a balanced approach!

Knowledgeable

Siri is my best friend. For all my kids’ odd questions (how deep is the ocean? where do hippos live?), I ask my phone.

Chances are, you don’t know everything that your kids will ask. A knowledgeable mom doesn’t know everything, either (and if she did, I don’t think I’d want to be friends with her).

But a knowledgeable mom knows where to find answers to her kids’ questions (yes, Siri counts).

A knowledgeable mom also instills a hunger for learning in her kids. By having interesting conversations, asking questions, and listening to your kids, you can be a knowledgeable mom, even if you don’t know everything.

In addition to Siri, I love these conversation starter cards for kids . I get tired of asking my son, “What did you do in school today,” and I’m pretty sure he’s tired of answering the same question.

Just by going the extra step of talking to your kids and taking an interest in their activities, you’ll be able to show your love.

You’re loved more than you know. You’re braver than you even imagine. – Lisa-Jo Baker

Being a mom requires a bravery that you probably didn’t know you had.

Just making it through birth takes bravery.

But even after birth, you’ll need to be brave as you kiss your kids’ boo-boos. Brave as you send them off to preschool, then kindergarten, and then college. Brave as you raise them to be the people you always knew they would be.

Wouldn't it be nice to finally get healthy? Whether you want to lose weight or eat healthier, these 5 steps will help you create a plan you can stick with.

One of the characteristics of a good mom is to be healthy. This can be achieved by following a healthy lifestyle, which includes exercise and diet.

Being a mom is hard and it can get even harder if you don’t take care of your health. You are the role model for your kids and you want to set a good example.

So, what can you do to be a healthy mom?

First of all, stop being lazy! Make time for exercise and make sure that you have a balanced diet. You need to make sure that you are getting enough vitamins and minerals, so try to include lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet.

It’s also important for moms to have a healthy lifestyle because it makes them more productive. Exercise helps moms maintain their weight, stay energized, and sleep better. Diet is important because it helps moms avoid health risks such as diabetes and heart disease.

We should not think about this as an obligation but instead as an investment in ourselves and our families. It will not only help us live longer, but also help us live healthier lives with the people we love most: our children.

Good Sense of Humor

Having a good sense of humour is an important part of parenting. It can help ease the stress of a difficult day and it can help your children learn to laugh at themselves.

But sometimes you might feel like you don’t have any funny material to work with, or that your jokes are stale.

Luckily, there are some great sources of humor that you can turn to for inspiration.

Here are some sources of humor that you might want to try:

  • Watching a comedy show or movie, both with and without your kids (depending on the appropriateness of the movie)
  • Reading a joke book (again, use your discretion, but there are some great kids’ joke books available)
  • Watching a comedian’s stand up routine on YouTube or a funny podcast (you can also make a girls’ night out of going to see a comedian)
  • Sharing funny notes in your kids’ lunches or putting them next to their beds or toothbrushes so they see them as soon as they wake up

Hard Working

Showing your kids hard work (and expecting hard work out of your kids) is necessary to build your kids’ work ethic and prepare them for the future.

Meet your kids where they are. If they enjoy playing video games and board games, spend some quality time doing their favorite activities.

Spending family time together doing fun activities is a great way to build a good relationship with your kids. You’ll be able to talk to them more and find out what’s going on in your child’s life, which is especially important to do with older kids.

Keep the Kids Busy!

While older kids may be busy with school activities and spending time with their best friends, it’s still important to show them that they have a loving parent available whenever they need.

Being a good mom means being available when your kids need you.

This is not always easy to do, especially if you are juggling a career and taking care of your family. But if you want to be the best mom for your children, then it is important that you find the time for them.

Plan scheduled time for fun activities, but also make sure you’re available to talk before and after school.

Another great idea is to set up a code word for older children. If they need help or are in a compromising position and need to get picked up, give them a code phrase that they can text or call and you will be available to get them – no questions asked.

We all know that being a mom is a tough job. It’s not easy to be positive all the time, but it is something that we should strive to do.

We should take care of ourselves and try to always be happy. We need to remember that our children are watching us and will learn from us, so we need to set a good example for them.

If we are not happy, then we can’t expect them to be either. A good mom is one who is always positive and looks on the bright side of things. This doesn’t mean that she is always happy, but she can find something good in every situation.

A good mom is not just the one who cooks, cleans and takes care of the kids. She is someone who can provide emotional support, listen attentively, and even make jokes with her kids.

Being a good mom also means being supportive of your children’s dreams and goals. It also means being open-minded to new ideas, different cultures, and lifestyles. It also means being a great listener.

A good mother is someone who is nurturing, caring, and takes care of her children, her family, and her friends. A good mom wants to make the world a better place for everyone in it.

A nurturing parent is also responsible for the child’s well-being and safety.

There are many ways in which a mother can be nurturing. For example, she can provide emotional support for her children and make them feel loved and accepted. She can also provide guidance to the children when they need it.

What Are the Qualities of a Nurturing Parent?

Good Role Model

The term “role model” is a descriptive term for someone who is seen as an example to others of how they should behave or what they should do.

A great mom is a good role model for her children. But she can teach them simple things by example, like teaching them to make their bed in the morning, clean their room, and brush their teeth before bedtime.

Many parents are not perfect, but they still want to be a good role model for their children. This can be difficult when you are struggling with your own issues. It is important to remember that the most important thing is to be the best you can be and provide an example of how to deal with life’s challenges.

When it comes down to it, the most important thing about being a good mom is showing your kids how to deal with life’s challenges.

A welcoming mom is always ready to help with whatever the child needs. She will not give up on them when they are struggling with something or when they are feeling down.

A welcoming mom will also take care of the child’s needs before her own and make sure that the child has everything they need in order to grow up into a healthy adult.

This characteristic is an important one because it helps to make sure that the children feel comfortable and at ease.

A good mom also creates a welcoming environment at home by creating a happy, comfortable home that both her own family and their friends enjoy visiting.

simple tips to create an inviting home

No one is a perfect mom, and it can be helpful to share some of your own mistakes to show how you persevered. This is a great way to share life lessons that had a tremendous impact on your personal growth with your kids.

Provide your children with a sense of security by establishing healthy boundaries.

Establishing healthy boundaries is important for both children and parents. Parents should establish these boundaries in a way that is consistent with the child.

The most important thing to remember is that children are not just small adults. They have different needs, desires, and personalities. This means that they will have different boundaries than an adult would. A boundary could be limiting screen time or establishing what they are allowed to eat or drink. These boundaries should be set up so they can feel secure while still being able to explore their own individuality and interests.

It is important for parents and children to have mutual understanding about what the boundaries are. The boundaries should be reasonable and should not be too rigid or too loose. Having clear boundaries will help the child feel more secure as they will know what is expected from them and what they can expect from others.

These are some traits I strive to have. I love how you recommended so many awesome resources in this post too. You're right the first thing we learn is patience, but when the kids get older we seem to lose that skill along the way.

So true! It's hard to keep our expectations realistic as they get older, too.

Parents are finding baby name ideas by visiting cemeteries: ‘I am a gravestone baby’

Make no bones about it, cemeteries can be a place of inspiration for baby names .

In a viral TikTok video, Haley Hodge, who is pregnant with her fourth child, explores a graveyard that dates back to 1792 in search of the perfect girl name.

Hodge, 30, and her husband, Rivers, are already parents of Finley, 10, Crew 3, and Banks, 16 months.

“I know some people might find it creepy, but my mother was a history buff and when we were growing up, she would take us on field trips to cemeteries,” Hodge, a physical therapist, tells TODAY.com . “You can learn so much about cultural aspects of the past."

She notes that her sister Cooper got her name from a tombstone.

Hodge’s excursion to the Smithville Burying Ground in Southport, North Carolina, was a success. She says she is now considering Galloway and Salem for her unborn daughter. In the clip, Hodge also zooms in on Vienna, Ella, Bunny, James, Julian, Winnie and Olympus.

“I am a gravestone baby (my mom loves to go epitaphing) and whenever people compliment my name I love to tell them and see their shocked faces when I say, ‘thanks my mom got it from a gravestone,’" one person wrote in the comments.

Added another, “I love this! and it’s absolutely no different then looking at a book of names or getting a name from a movie/show. and it’s a great way to bring back the older generation names!”

Galloway is now on Hodge's baby name list.

Some people on TikTok noted that there are superstitions around visiting a graveyard while pregnant, and many pointed out that Salem and Galloway are both place names: Salem, Massachusetts, and Galloway, Scotland.

Laura Wattenberg, creator of Namerology, tells TODAY.com that cemeteries are rich with historical names and a smart place to look for inspiration.

“You’ll find lot of Johns and Marys, and Williams and Anns,” she Wattenberg says. “But you’ll also come across interesting names that have been forgotten.”

what makes a mother unique essay

Don't thank your mom only on Mother's Day. Instead, appreciate what she does all year.

Do something for your mom that goes beyond mother's day. appreciate what she does, all the time..

Even though Mother's Day is a fabricated Hallmark holiday, it can trigger many emotions because it emphasizes moms, an integral fabric of the nuclear family unit.

In 2013, I wrote a scathing column for The Atlantic about how Mother's Day was stupid because the inventor of the holiday herself ultimately wanted to disown it and because it sets such high expectations for men, children and others to celebrate.

Some of that holds true, but now that I've been parenting for another 11 years – and still have many more to go – I've come to a better understanding of why the holiday has always gotten under my skin.

About a third of moms say being a mom is the most important part of who she is. It's full of joy and happy moments, but it's a lot of work. It's often more work than she and anyone else in her life realizes. Most moms just want the children and the adults in their lives to see this and appreciate it. Let me tell you why.

The early years are harder − and better − than most moms expect

For many women, becoming a mom is a dream, even a goal. Before they become a mom, they think about their children, how they will raise them and what kind of woman they will be to these little people.

The infant and toddler years are often harder than many women expect, even if they're also full of joy. I've joked that when I had four children under 6 years old, I went about a decade without sleeping – and now my teenagers keep me up late talking! (It's a good problem to have.)

Parents and social media: Parents need help regulating their children's social media. A government ban would help.

For any woman looking forward to being a mom, as I was, this dichotomy of exhaustion and joy, physical demands and nurturing one's own babies is startling at first and hard to embrace.

Most people, even fathers − although admittedly, this is a broad generalization − do not understand the toll that sleep deprivation has on moms, let alone appreciate it. Or acknowledge it. Frankly, it's expected. Someone has to get up in the middle of the night with the baby, right? Often, it's moms.

The middle years are full of tons of invisible labor

As children age, from about 4 to 12, they become a bit easier. This magical season is full of make-believe, fun, play and joy. They still think you are everything. They seem so pure.

But there's a mountain of invisible labor involved. Sure, kids sleep through the night now, but endless choices present themselves.

What about school? Private, public, or homeschool? Sports? Music? Other activities? Who will register them, pay fees, take them and ensure the child practices? This is on top of doctor and dentist visits, clothing and shoes needed, haircuts, dates with friends, free play outside, hydration, spiritual formation and quality time with loved ones.

These are the formative years, and moms know it. Sometimes, only moms know this. Dads or other loved ones see their kid's development or activities and often don't make the connection that the child is in practice, for example, because mom made sure to get him there.

This is especially true as more moms have entered the workforce, whether because they want to or because circumstances demand it.

The Met Gala is a joke: Yes, Zendaya looked stunning. But Met Gala was a tone-deaf charade of excess and hypocrisy.

About 56% of moms work, and almost half of women surveyed in a 2022 Pew Research Center poll said parenting was tiring most of the time. More than a third said parenting was stressful most of the time. Dads reported being significantly less tired and stressed.

Almost 80% of moms say they do more to manage their child's schedule, compared with 54% of dads.

Mostly, moms want to be appreciated for what they do

The mental load of parenting that moms tend to carry doesn't lighten as the kids enter the teen years, even though moms might think so. The physicality of raising children lessens − everyone is sleeping through the night! − but it shifts to emotional labor that can take parents off guard. I always looked forward to my kids' teen years because I know my strengths as a parent are in deep conversations and challenging ideas, but the weight of these years and their near independence is heavier than I thought.

This can be an unforeseen challenge for moms who still working to juggle the invisible labor and mental load of the adolescent years.

Teens present an entirely different set of challenges and joy. They're sarcastic and insecure, but they still love to laugh and hug. They don't want you, but they need you. They're kids in big bodies, and something about this is endearing, exciting and terrifying. They can now also have wonderfully complex, exciting, interesting conversations about real life. Their choices have real-world consequences, some of them huge.

This can be uncomfortable yet rewarding. The goal was to raise independent, kind, wise young adults, wasn't it?

Especially in this stage, even as the teen morphs into a quasi-adult, mom still facilitates homework, sports and music practices. Now, she's also handling college applications, driver's training and licenses, car purchasing, broken hearts and flaring tempers. She's more of an Uber, therapist and chef some days than the mom who once pushed her kids on the swings for hours, but it's still what she loves and with the people she loves most. (Dads do a lot of this too! But this column is about moms.)

Teens especially have difficulty seeing how much mom does because it is so expected, and she's been so consistent. What would change now?

The days are full of mundane faithfulness, tasks like making dinner and making sure they brush their teeth to gargantuan things like discussing God, college and your kid's broken hearts. From changing a diaper or cleaning up vomit to giving them a phone and watching them pull out of the driveway for the first time, only a mother knows the unseen, literally invisible, things she has done to love this child, to ensure her baby grows up to be happy, healthy and successful.

This is why, while many moms want a day at the spa, a nice brunch or some gorgeous flowers, one day a year of appreciation doesn't seem to scratch the surface. It's not that moms are greedy or have a victim mentality. They just know what has gone into raising their babies.

She remembers the sleepless nights, the late trips to the store, the early practices, and the middle-of-the-night illnesses. When her child needs her, she's there. In fact, she's there well before her children know what they need.

She loves doing this and being a mom. But she wants to be seen, heard and appreciated more than one day a year.

Nicole Russell is an opinion columnist with USA TODAY.   She lives in Texas with her four kids.
