How to get a student visa for Poland in 2021-22

Obtaining a study visa for Poland is a pretty straightforward process, but that doesn’t mean you should leave it to the last minute to get started. Before beginning the application process,  you’ll need to secure your place in one of Poland’s 500 higher education institutions.

The country’s top-ranked universities include the University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University, and the Warsaw University of Technology. It has long held a respected standing in academia and innovation. You may even recall Poland as home to famous scientists such as Marie Curie (the first woman to win a Nobel Prize) and Nicholas Copernicus (the astronomer who discovered that planets orbit the sun).

You could pursue an undergraduate or postgraduate course, or the nine-month preparatory Zerówka course. The latter is essentially Polish language school — you could also join an English language course, if you need to brush up your language. International courses will be taught in English, and there are scholarships available for bright students.

With more students setting their sights on Poland — international student enrolment has been on an upward trend in the past five years — you may be wondering how to pursue a degree there. One of the first steps? Figure out the immigration process. Here’s a quick rundown of how you can obtain a student visa for Poland.

Do I need a student visa for Poland?

That depends on where you’re from — residents of fellow European Union (EU) countries do not need a student visa for Poland. In fact, EU citizens can travel in Poland document-free for 30 days. However, you must register your residence with a local Provincial Office within your first three months in the country.

Non-EU students will need to apply for a D-type Schengen visa for multiple entry and long-stay. Once you hold a Schengen visa, you can go on to apply for visa for Poland, and even travel to other EU countries which recognise it.

How do I apply for student visa?

Your visa application should take no longer than 15 days to be reviewed, but you’re advised to submit your documents early to account for any delay. Make copies of the original documents for the embassy as you may need them. You may submit your application (along with the processing fee) at a Polish consulate near you — find one here .

Here’s what you’ll need for your student visa application:

• A completed and signed Poland student visa application form
• Passport (valid for three months after your planned departure from Poland)
• Official letter of acceptance from a university in Poland
• Your CV and certificates
• Proof of English language proficiency
• Evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself throughout the course
• Health insurance documents
• Biometric photo

Non-EU students require temporary residence permit

A typical undergraduate course lasts three years, while certain long-cycle postgraduate course can take up to six years. As the type D visa only allows you to stay in Poland for one year, international students must apply for a temporary residence visa to reside in the country for a longer period.

Student with visa for Poland must apply for temporary residence permit at the local Provincial office. You will need: your application form, photos and documents proving your identity and citizenship, address, the purpose of stay (which can be proven with a certificate from your school), health insurance, and proof of sufficient funds. It will cost 390 Polish złoty (85 Euros, or close to 100 US dollars).

How to apply for a Poland student visa 2022

Unless you are a citizen of an EU country, you will need a student visa in order to study in Poland as an international student.

If you are from an EU member state, you will only need valid ID and travel documents, and to register your residency with the Voivodship (Provincial) Office to study in Poland.

All other international students will need a D type visa, which allows you to stay and study in Poland for one year. To stay longer you need to apply for a temporary residence permit before your visa expires.

Confirm your university place: You must have accepted an offer from a Polish university and have proof of your place before you can apply for a visa.

Find your nearest Polish consulate: You will need to visit a Polish embassy or consulate in your home country to have you visa application processed. You can  find your nearest Polish consulate here .

Set a visa appointment with the consulate: You will probably need to register online through the  Polish consulate website  first.

Prepare your documents: See below for a full list of the documents you’ll need. The specific requirements may vary between consulates, so confirm with them first.

Attend your appointment and submit your documents: Submit all the documents including a printed and signed application form and the visa fee. You should receive a decision within two to three weeks.

Applying for a Polish residence permit

The type D visa allows you to stay in Poland for one year, so you will need to apply for a temporary residence permit in order to stay for longer, for example, if you’re studying a three-year bachelor’s program.

You can apply for a permit by visiting  your local Voivodship Office . You will need to submit:

An application form

Identity documents

Proof of your studies

Health insurance documents

Proof you have sufficient funds

Your first permit will be valid for 15 months, but can be renewed for up to three years, but not longer than the remainder of your studies. You can only apply when you are legally living in Poland, but before your visa expires.

Poland student visa requirements

Here are the documents you will need to provide when you apply for a Polish type D visa:

A completed and signed Poland student visa application form

Valid passport (must be valid for three months after your planned departure from Poland)

Official letter of acceptance from a university in Poland

School certificates and diplomas

Proof of your English language proficiency

Evidence you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your studies

One passport-size photo

Proof of accommodation in Poland

Transport documentation, such as a rail or air ticket

Polish student visa processing time

Once you have submitted your application and all of the required documents, it should take 15 days for your visa to be reviewed and for you to receive a response.

Although this turnaround is pretty quick, you should still start your application way in advance of your departure date. In some cases, processing can take much longer, and delays can occur if you forget to include all your documents.

You can start your application three months before your enrollment date once you have your acceptance letter.

Working with a Polish student visa

There are no restrictions on working with a Polish type D student visa. International students can work in Poland without needing a work permit, provided you have a valid residence permit.

Although it is possible to have a full-time job while you’re studying in Poland, you need to make sure working doesn’t affect your studies. If working long hours has a negative impact on your grades, you may find it harder to renew your residence permit.

What to do if your visa application is rejected

Having your Poland student visa application declined can be disappointing, but it doesn't mean your study abroad plans are over.

Some of the most common reasons for a rejected application include:

Insufficient financial evidence you can support yourself during your studies

Incomplete application form

Missing or inadequate documents

Invalid passport

Lack of appropriate travel insurance

Most of these issues can be resolved by submitting a new application providing any missing or insufficient information.

If your visa has been rejected and you don't agree with the decision, you can write a letter of appeal. Your letter should be addressed to your local consulate, and outline why you think your application should be accepted.

VISA & APPLICATION

If you are a citizen of an EU member state the only thing you need to have to enter Poland is a valid travel document or a document confirming identity and citizenship (i.e. your national ID). However, if you wish to travel abroad during your stay in Poland it is a good idea to have a passport with you, as it is necessary to visit some of Poland’s neighbours that do not belong to the EU.

For a stay shorter than three months there are no formal requirements. Your studies will, however, take longer. For such a stay a registration of residence is necessary, one should register with Voivodship (Provincial) Office.

Two main documents that are required when entering Poland by the non-EU citizens are a valid travel document (passport) and a visa (if required).

As a general rule, you would need a visa to enter Poland. However, foreigners from a number of countries are exempted from a visa requirement when entering Schengen Area for the periods not exceeding 90 days within a 180-day period: One can check the list of the countries ie here: https://udsc.gov.pl/en/cudzoziemcy/obywatele-panstw-trzecich/chce-przyjechac-do-polski/czy-potrzebuje-wizy/

Poland is a part of the Schengen Area, so you can apply for a Polish visa and travel all around Europe (excluding the United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and states outside of the EU).

There are several types of visas to choose from:

“A” type – an airport transit Schengen visa, so it cannot be used by a student coming to Poland “C” type – a short-term Schengen visa allowing the holder to stay in the Schengen territory for up to 90 days in 180 days period “D” type – a long-term national visa issued for up to one year allowing travel around the Schengen area for up to 90 days in a 180 days period A visa can only be extended in exceptional situations. Should you need to stay in Poland longer than specified in your visa please do apply for the temporary residence permit (see below)

5 easy steps to get a visa

1) Find a Polish Consulate/ consular section of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland that can process your application. You can use the MFA’s search engine  https://www.gov.pl/web/diplomacy/polands-missions-abroad

2) Read carefully ALL the information concerning visa application on the consulate’s website and follow ALL the instructions.

3) Set a visa appointment with the consulate. In most cases, you will have to register through the website:  https://secure.e-konsulat.gov.pl/

4) Prepare the necessary documents, including application form, travel document (passport), biometric photo, health insurance, sufficient means to support yourself, documents confirming the purpose of your stay. The specifics of the required documentation may vary among consulates, so confirm them with the consulate’s website.

5) Submit all the documents including a printed and signed application form and the visa fee. Your visa application is complete. It should take up to 15 days for it to be reviewed.

Early submission of visa documents is advisable as in some cases procedure may take a considerable amount of time.

Who needs it?

Every Non-EU student needs it.

You should apply for a Temporary Residence Permit before your visa expires.

When you receive the permit you will be issued a Temporary Residence Card, an ID card that proves that you have a residence permit. Together with your travel document, it allows you to cross the Polish border as many times as you wish. The first residence permit is issued for a period of 15 months. It can be renewed for periods of up to 3 years but for no longer than the remainder of your studies.

REMEMBER: You should apply for the Temporary Residence Card when you are legally staying in Poland, which means after you arrive, but before the expiry of your visa

Application

You have to apply for a Temporary Residence Permit with the local Voivodship Office. You can find a complete list of offices here:  https://udsc.gov.pl/en/cudzoziemcy/obywatele-panstw-trzecich/chce-przedluzyc-swoj-pobyt-w-polsce/zezwolenie-na-pobyt-czasowy/studia-i-nauka/nauka/  The documents you will need to legalise your stay include an application form, photos and documents proving your identity and citizenship, address, the purpose of stay (a certificate from your school) health insurance and possession of sufficient funds. EU students

EU students do not need to apply for temporary residence permits. As UE citizens they should only apply for registration of their stay with local voivodship office within 90 days of their arrival. They will be issued a cost-free certificate of registration with a non-limited period of validity proving their right to stay in Poland. Types of Visa in Poland:

There are two types of visas offered by the Consulate General of the Republic in Poland. The short-stay Schengen visa is also called a type C visa, and the long-stay National Visa in Poland is called Type D Visa.

Type C Visa:

If you are willing to stay in Poland for up to 90 days, then the Schengen Type C visa is for you. In the time duration of 180 days, the visa allows you to stay in Poland for 90 days, with multiple entries. However, the visa is not suitable for the students, and most of them will have to apply for a Long Stay Type D Visa.

Type D Visa: Poland National Visa

This is the long-stay visa in Poland and students who are willing to stay in Poland for more than 90 days. Poland National Visa has some requirements that we will discuss further, and it also has an interview for the visa. Here are all the requirements for Poland Student Visa and Interview Process.

Poland Student Visa: Documents Required

• Application Form: The Application form for Poland National Visa is free and can be downloaded from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Poland website. You will need to fill the form out and fill in every detail. Photographs are attached to the application where needed.
• A Valid Passport and the photocopy of the data page of the Passport.
• Cover Letter: The Cover letter includes why you want to study in Poland , and your intent to return to your home country once your program is over. With a cover letter, you will attach the supporting documents that are required for the visa process.
• Letter of Acceptance from a Recognised University in Poland.
• Flight Tickets
• Proof of Accommodation
• Medical Insurance: with coverage up to 30000 euros.
• Academic Documents: Degree Certificates, Transcripts, and Mark Sheets.
• Monetary Fund Proofs: See Requirements below.
• Payment Receipt of Visa Application Fees (99 EUR, depending on the home country)

The Original Documents should be separately presented to the nearest consulate of the Embassy of Poland in your country by booking an appointment with them. When you submit your application and the documents, the process will move further to the interview process.

Poland Student Visa Interview:

Once you submit all the documents and the Poland Student Visa Application at the consulate, you will be provided with a token for the interview. Poland Student Visa Interview is an integral part of the Poland Visa Process. The Interview however is pretty straightforward. The questions will be about your previous travels, the university you will be studying in, your accommodation and jobs if you will be doing any, and the sponsors of your education. Students are needed to answer honestly, and the Visa process is quite fluent if you have all the documents required.

Poland Student Visa Financial Requirements:

For Poland, the financial requirements for students of higher education and research purposes are 800 PLN (187 EUR / 211 USD) a month. The return air ticket is also mandatory. If the student has not purchased the return ticket, the amount of 2500 PLN (581 EUR / 658 USD) is required.

Adding them both, the monetary funds required for the Poland Student Visa are 12100 PLN (2814 EUR / 3184 USD )a year.

Poland Student Visa: Step by Step Application

Step 1: The first one is to search for a Polish embassy. Step 2: You need to read every single instruction very carefully and follow all of them strictly. Step 3: You should fix an appointment with the consulate and in this process; you might need to register through the official website. Step 4: Assemble all the essential documents mentioned above Step 5: Recheck once and submit along with the fees. 

The visa processing time for the Poland Student Visa is around 15 days. Please start the Poland Visa process well in advance to stop complications of any sort because Student visa approval might take a longer time than you had expected.

As we have mentioned, the Poland Student Visa application is not at all complex once you have the documents required. Non-EU Students are supposed to apply for Polish Residence Permit once they arrive in Poland before their Visa expires. The students will be granted temporary residence permits for up to 15 months at the first application.

The Application for Residence should be submitted at Voivodeship Office in Poland, which costs approximately 390 PLN (91 EUR). Poland Visa For EU citizens

EU students enjoy the maximum benefits if they wish to pursue higher studies in Poland. The temporary residence permit does not apply to them. They only need registration for their stay within 3 months of their arrival. They must process this through the local administrative office. This is absolutely cost-free. You can apply for a short-term visa or a long-term visa to study in Poland. Here are the details of the two types of visas:

1.1. Short-Term Visa (Type C)

The short-term study visa for Poland is named the Uniform Schengen Visa. This visa allows you to stay in Poland or any Schengen territory for a maximum period of 90 days. This stay can be over 180 days.  

International students can get advantage of the short-term visa (Type C) if they are visiting Poland  

  for a particular sports, cultural, or academic event.

Students can register with  E-KONSULAT & fill out the Schengen visa application forms or take appointments in their respective Polish embassies & consulates.

1.2. Long-Term Visa (Type D)

A long-term visa for Poland is required if you intend to stay in Poland for over 90 days. This visa is also called the National visa for Poland. You can stay in Poland for up to one year on this visa if it is valid.  

You can also visit other Schengen member states on this visa for 90 days in 180 days.

Most international students can apply for a long-term visa if they are enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD program, and their stay is more than 90 days.  

Students can register with  E-KONSULAT & fill out the national visa application forms or take appointments in their respective Polish embassies & consulates.

After getting the long-term visa, the student will be required to apply for a residence permit in Poland.

The first residence permit may be granted for one year according to the duration of the program. They may need to apply for an extension after the expiration of this permit.  

International students can apply for a residence permit by making an appointment through the Foreign Portal in POL.  

If you are looking to work while studying in Poland, you would need a work permit. The applicants can apply for the work permit through the local Voivodeship Office (Governor’s Office).

  You would need to submit proof of your legal status as an employee, receipt of paid fees, etc, for a work permit. The employer will be required to submit other supporting documents.

2. Visa Processing Fees for Polish Study Visa

The processing fee for Type C and D study visa for Poland is 86 USD. Family members of EU citizens and holders of diplomatic and official passports are exempted from the visa processing fees.

5.1. Poland study Visa Application form

The application form requires the applicant to fill out personal details, current residential details, financial details, etc.

Students can register with  E-KONSULAT & fill their respective Poland visa application forms or take appointments in their nearby Polish Embassies & Consulates for more details.

5.7.   English Language Proficiency (IELTS) for Poland Student Visa

There are no specific mentions of IELTS for Poland student visas on their immigration websites. However, IELTS is compulsory for some public Poland universities.

5.9. Acceptance Letter from a Polish university

The applicants applying for a student visa to Poland are required to submit an acceptance letter to prove that they are visiting the country for study purposes.  

The acceptance letter is issued by a university to declare that they have accepted the student into their institution for a particular degree program.  

The acceptance letter must contain the duration of the program and any additional benefits offered by the institution to the student i.e. accommodation facility.  

The annual fees for a full-time degree program in Poland may cost between €2,000 and €6,000. However, the costs may go steeper depending on the program and institution.

5.10. Bank statement for Poland Student Visa (Financial Means)

Students willing to get a Poland student visa must prove that they have sufficient financial means to support their stay in Poland. This can be done through three options.  

Firstly, the student can submit a bank statement of the previous six months with the balance required by the embassy or consulate to show that you are financially capable to support their stay in Poland.  

Compare to other European countries, Poland is inexpensive to live.

A Bank balance of 6000 Euros is enough to prove that students are financially stable enough to cover their stay for the next 7-8 months.

2500 PLN is technically enough for a student to spend in one month on basic needs (living and lodging purposes in Poland) in Poland.

Remember Bank statements must not be more than 30 days old.

Bank Statement must be signed and stamped by the bank officer. The bank account must be in the name of the student. This amount should be shown irrespective of the university fee.

In the case of a scholarship or grant, there is no need of showing a bank statement.

Thirdly, you can show sponsorship which can either be in the form of a scholarship or a person who is sponsoring you. In this case, their bank statement or salary slip will be required.

5.11. Health (Travel) Insurance for Poland study visa

International students from Non-Eu countries are advised to have private or public health (Travel) insurance which can cover their first few months in case of any medical & Pharmaceutical assistance or emergency.

Poland has recently become popular among international students for higher education. Poland also has a shortage of skilled professionals, which creates several job opportunities for international students. The application process for universities in Poland is very rigorous, and thus, only the best students get admission. After getting admitted to a university, you will need a Poland study visa to stay in Poland.

If you are a non-EU/EEA/Swiss national, then you will need a student visa. Remember that you will not be able to stay in any other country besides Poland with a study visa. 

Documents needed for Poland Study Visa

The visa process for any country is boring. You need to follow all the steps and requirements clearly to avoid rejection. The main document that you will have for your study visa will be the application form for the study visa. You will need various supporting documents to be submitted with the application form. 

Here is the list of all the supporting documents with the format in which they should be submitted:

Application Form 

The first document you need is the application form. You can easily get this form either by visiting the nearest Polish embassy near you or from the official website of the Polish government. Fill up the form correctly with all the details. This is the first document you need for Poland Study Visa.

2 Passport Sized Photos

The next thing you need is two passport-sized photos of yourself. These photos must be recent ones, and the image should be clear and of good quality. The dimensions of the photos must be 3.5cm by 4.5cm.

Passport 

Your passport is also one of the most important things you need for the Poland study visa. The passport must be valid. Many people have confusion regarding the validity of their passports. You can check the validity of your passport by checking the issue date. If your passport was issued in the last ten years, then it is a valid one. Apart from the validity check, you need to make sure that it stays valid for at least three months after your stay is completed. This is the most important document you need for Poland Study Visa.

Health Insurance

One of the most neglected documents by international students is health insurance. You need to have student health insurance that stays valid for the entire duration of your stay. It should cover all your expenses in case of an emergency. It should also be valid in the entire Schengen area. 

Proof Of Accommodation 

The Polish government needs to make sure that you have a place to stay for your visa duration in Poland. You can choose to live in dorms, apartments, or at a relative’s place. In case you live in an apartment or a dorm, you need to submit the official contract between you and the owner of the apartment stating that you are permitted to stay there. If you are planning to live at a friend’s or a relative’s place, then you need to submit a letter of invitation from the host, which should state that you will be allowed to stay there. 

Proof Of Financial Stability

You need to prove that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in Poland. The minimum funds that you need to have is 701 PLN per month. This amount is set by the government as this is enough for students to sustain themselves for a month. Apart from this, you will need to have 2500 PLN for your return ticket to India. You can calculate the total fund you need to show by simply taking into account the number of months you are going to stay and the amount you need for a month. 

University Acceptance Letter 

The Poland study visa is for students who have undertaken a study program in Poland. Thus, you have to submit proof of acceptance from the Polish university that you have been admitted to. The acceptance letter should clearly state your details like name, age, etc., and it should also state the duration and length of your study program. 

Proof of Language Proficiency

The other document needed for the Poland study visa is proof of English or Polish proficiency. This can be in the form of a certificate. For English proficiency, you can take tests like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, etc. 

Scholarship (if any)

Many students receive a scholarship that covers a part of their studies. Some students may get scholarships that cover the cost of their studies, including the travel cost. In this case, you need to submit the official proof of your scholarship, and it should provide you with at least EUR 631 per month. 

Relationship Proof 

If you are married, then submit the marriage certificate. This aids in the process of bringing your spouse with you during your stay.

Poland Study Visa Application Process

The application steps are as follows:

• Find the nearest Polish embassy and fix an appointment.
• Collect the application form for the study visa and fill it up and collect all the supporting documents as mentioned in the section above. 
• Submit the application form and the documents to the embassy. Make sure that all the details are filled correctly.
• Wait for a response. Usually, you will hear from the embassy regarding your application via phone or text message.

Poland Study Visa Processing Time

The embassy takes some time to process your visa requests to check if all the documents are correct. For the Polish study visa, the processing time is 15 days. In rare cases, this may extend to 2-3 months. 

How Long Can A Student Stay In Poland With a Study Visa?

The study visa is valid for three months. If you wish to stay longer than three months, then you will need to apply for a long-term Poland study visa. You may need to apply for a temporary residence permit first if you want to extend your short-term study visa. 

How Many Hours Can A Student Work With A study visa?

The Polish government allows international students to work along with their studies. You can thus work for a maximum of 20 hours per week in a part-time job. You may work full-time during breaks. Remember that you should focus more on your studies than work, as the motive of your student visa is a study program. You need to pass the exams in time to ensure that your visa gets renewed. 

Can your Family Come Along With You?

Yes, your family members can come with you. For this, they have to apply for a residence permit as an accompanying family member. You will need to show proof of financial funds enough for the stay of all your family members. Your family members can work, too, if you have a temporary residence permit. 

Is An Extension Of The Poland Study Visa Possible?

Yes, if your studies are taking longer than expected, then you can extend the visa to the length of your studies. For this, you will first need to apply for a temporary residence permit once your visa expires. If this way isn’t possible for you, then you will need to come to your home country and reapply for a visa. An extension to a temporary residence permit isn’t possible. If you need to stay more, then you will have to reapply for a temporary residence permit.
