Credit, Grading, Retention and Maximum Residency

In general, credit for a course is determined by the number and length of class meetings per week per trimester. Thus, a class meeting for three hours a week for one trimester earns three hours of credit. For a student to be in good standing and thus be retained in the program, he or she should:

  • have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 or 89% for MBA and 3.00 or 91% for PhD.
  • no grade of 2.25 in any two pre-requisite, basic, core or elective subjects for MBA and 2.50 for PhD
  • Failing grade for MBA is 2.25 and 2.50 for PhD. In case of failure, the student needs to re-enroll the subject and pass in order to be retained in the program. A failed subject can be re-enrolled only once. Failure in two (2) different subjects will also subject the students to exclusion from the program.
  • The GPA may be obtained through the following procedure:
  • Multiply the credit for each subject by the corresponding grade points merited in each subject to get the honor points. Units corresponding to undergraduate pre-requisite/refresher courses are not included in the computation.
  • Add all the honor points to get the total; and
  • Divide the total honor points by the total number of credit units during the trimester. Indices are computed to four decimal places rounded off to three.
  • Credit and grading for transferees are determined by either the Graduate School Director or the College Dean. A maximum of 15 units is allowed to be credited. Accreditation forms are available at the Registrar's Office.
  • A student is allowed a maximum of three (3) absences in each subject per term. Beyond this, the student should request in writing (cc: The Dean) from his/her professor(s) to excuse his/her absence. The professor(s) may impose additional requirements on the student involved. Failure to observe this policy means incurring a grade of 0.0, which will be reflected in the student's transcript of records. The Dean has the final power to adjudicate all problems arising due to absences from regularly scheduled classes in the college.
  • All school fees should be paid before the final examination is scheduled, which is on the 15th session of every term. A student is required to present a "Final permit" form to his/her professor before taking said final exams. No permit, no exam.
  • Special examinations are allowed within one week after the final examination date. However, the student should be able to present a valid excuse in writing to his/her professor. The student should also pay a special exam fee of P100 and present the receipt to the professor together with the exam permit.
  • Change of Grade. This refers to a change in the final term grade. This is initiated by the professor for a strongly justifiable purpose such as for example, a student has completed the course requirement. Thus the grade of "INC" needs to be changed. The allowable period for this action is within one year.
  • The student whose grade will be changed should request for an Application for a Change of Grade form at the Registrar's Office and submit it to his/her Professor. In turn, the latter should accomplish it and attach the document that the student submitted to complete his/her grade. Before the Dean approves the application, a small group meeting of three professors (change of grade committee) including the applicant shall be convened to deliberate on the change of grade application. The application and supporting documents shall then be endorsed to the University Registrar together with the minutes of the meeting.
  • The MBA program must be completed within five (5) consecutive school years after enrollment inclusive of filed leaves of absence. Meanwhile, the PhD program must be completed within seven (7) school years after enrollment and also inclusive of filed leaves of absence.
  • Failure to complete the MBA program within residency period stated above will mean re-enrolling in penalty subjects, initially for six (6) units if he/she re-enrolls on the sixth year and additional three (3) units for every year that re-enrollment is deferred. Once re-enrolled a student should not anymore take a leave of absence.
  • The subjects to be re-enrolled should be Business Research Techniques if he/she has not prepared a thesis proposal, and a core subject or elective. PhD students who exceed the seven-year residency period should re-enroll on the eighth year twelve (12) units of penalty subjects and additional 6 units for every year that re-enrollment is deferred. These should be core and elective subjects.

Comprehensive Examinations

Written comprehensive examinations (wce).

  • All MBA and PhD students EXCEPT Executive MBA students are required to take the WCE.
  • To qualify for the written comprehensive examination, students should have completed and passed the basic and Core Subjects. They should request for an application form at the Registrar's office, noted by the Director of Graduate Studies.
  • WCE is given every term. Exams shall be for two consecutive days including those who need to retake certain subjects.
  • WCE consists of five (5) management subjects, as follows:
  • Principles and Theories of Management (PTM) for Regular MBA or Managing Information Technology (MIT) for Techno MBA
  • Marketing Management (MM)
  • Production and Operations Management (ProdMan)
  • Financial Management (FinMan)
  • Human Resources Management (HRM)
  • The student should pass each subject and merit a grade of at least 87 per subject and also a GPA of at least 87 for all five subjects. If the GPA for all five comprehensive subjects is at least 87 and there is a failing subject (below 87%), only the failed subject(s) should be retaken on the regular scheduled WCE every trimester. However, if he/she fails the retaken subject(s), he should take a refresher of the said subject(s) and try for the third time. If the student still fails on the third take, he/she will be recommended for transfer to another school. However, a certificate for finishing the academic requirements will be given. On the other hand, the student is required to retake all five subjects if the GPA for all five subjects is below 87% or if three (3) out of five (5) comprehensive subjects have below 87% mark.
  • The student should submit to GSB two (2) days before the examination date ten (10) test booklets. GSB shall mark/stamp each sheet and distribute these on the examination day.

PhD Comprehensive Examinations

  • PhD students should have completed all basic, core and elective subjects to qualify for comprehensive examinations. Total academic units completed should be 48 units.
  • Written examinations.
  • Coverage shall be 8 subjects namely, six (6) core and one (1) each of basic and elective subjects. With regard to the latter subjects, the examinees shall choose one subject from each category.
  • The examinations shall run for 2 ½ days, i.e., 2 days for core and 1/2 day for basic and elective subjects. Examination time shall be two hours per subject. Whole day examinations shall start at 9 am and end at 5 pm with one-hour lunch break at 11 am. Half day examinations shall start at 9 am and end at 2 pm with one-hour lunch break.
  • Questions shall come from the professors who taught the subject(s). They shall also be responsible for checking the test papers. In case the professor(s) who taught the subject(s) is not able to submit questions, the Dean shall nominate another professor taking into consideration the course syllabus used and specialization of the faculty.
  • For the Core Subjects, students shall answer three (3) out of four (4) and for the basic and elective subjects, four (4) out of six (6) questions.
  • The student shall submit to GSB two (2) days before the examination date (10) yellow ruled sheets. GSB shall mark/stamp each sheet and distribute these on examination day.
  • Subjects failed should be retaken. Ruling for the retaking of subjects in the MBA program shall apply, except for this case, 89% should be the passing mark.
  • Grades shall be categorized as high pass (98-100), mid-pass (94-97) and pass (89-93).

Terminal Papers

Thesis writing.

Each student under these programs should enroll for a 6-unit credit in Thesis Writing after completion of all academic requirements. This enrollment, under special arrangement, is good for one year (3 consecutive trimesters) wherein he/she is expected to pass the two defenses for the two parts. The two parts of the thesis development are proposal writing (Chapters 1 to 4) and thesis completion (Chapters 5 and 6). He/She is assigned an adviser of his choice who will guide him/her through to the proposal and final defense. In cases when the student finds difficulty in choosing an adviser, he/she should see the GS Director and/or CBA Dean. An advising contract is issued by the Dean every term and signed by both student and faculty adviser, witnessed by the GS Director. Then the student should enroll again the subject if he/she will not be able to comply with all the thesis requirements within the given period of one year. Proposal and final thesis defense are made before a panel of three faculty members.

Management Research Paper

This is the final requirement for Executive MBA students and those in either the Regular or Techno Program who opted to write this rather than a thesis. This is actually a strategic management analysis for a corporation. The candidate should enroll this 3-unit non-classroom subject. Immediately after enrollment, he/she will be assigned an adviser of his choice. If he/she finds difficulty in choosing an adviser he should see the GS Director and/or the CBA Dean. An advising contract is issued by the Dean and signed by both student and faculty adviser, witnessed by the GS Director. The candidate is also required to present his completed paper at the end of the term before a panel of faculty members and a representative of the company which is the subject of the paper. The final output is confidential and kept in storage for a period of five years.

Dissertation

A PhD student may enroll in Dissertation Writing I (6 units) after he/she passes the comprehensive examination. He should advise the Office of the Director as to who is his/her preferred adviser. Since Dissertation Writing I and II are each 6 units, the student should be able to defend his Dissertation proposal at the end of one school year. If he/she passes Dissertation Writing I, the student can enroll in Dissertation Writing II (6 units) wherein at the end of three successive terms, he/she is expected to finally defend the entire dissertation paper in order to be conferred the full PhD degree.

Aaron's PhD Journey

Navigating the phd in urban design and planning.

phd in marketing philippines

My Ph.D. journey begins (Part 1)!

It started in the philippines….

My journey to earn a Ph.D. degree began around 2017 when I decided that it was time for me to pursue a doctorate. It was about 5 years since I last left the country to complete my Master of Science in Practising Sustainable Development at Royal Holloway, University of London (read about it here: Today, two years ago I began a wonderful journey. : Bemuse. (aaronlecciones.com) !) and I felt that if I were to ever find time in my life now to do a terminal degree the time would be now. I was getting very busy with a lot of things, especially career-wise and I had to make that decision to either do it later or now – and I thought it better to disrupt my current life and career trajectory in exchange for having much better knowledge when I come back (since anyway, nothing is going anywhere, all the opportunity is still there when I come back). I applied to several schools but unfortunately it was unsuccessful since I didn’t get any funding and I couldn’t afford the entire costs for studying outside the country. I was, however, determined to find a way – be it studying in Europe (where I heard costs would be more manageable) or by taking out a loan if I had to study in the USA. Having already studied in Europe for my masters, I was intent on taking my Ph.D. in the United States of America – besides, I told myself, I’d love to live in the most advanced country in the world for a time. The experience from that would surely change me for the better when I came back home and helped the country grow! I did used to live in the States when I was younger. My family lived in Rockville, Maryland for a few years while my dad trained at the National Institutes of Health . I told myself, I can make this happen. I just need more time.

Me and my family in front of our house at Maryland.

But as we all know, time is hard to come by when you’re a little bit older. Especially when your career has picked up somewhat, you are getting more settled in life, and importantly, many large life milestones that you have targeted seem to be converging together. So, I waited and continued my life – there was a lot to do at work, planning to build my house, and many others things. Before I knew it, it was already 2019 and I told myself, wow, I really need to seriously figure this out. But of course, we all know what happened in 2020! The COVID pandemic really messed things up but at the same time gave me some space to sort things out. At around that same time my mentor, Assistant Professor Carla Jimena , reached out to me for the third year in a row, that I should apply to Fulbright. Ma’am Carla, as we fondly call her, was the head of the Department of Social Development Services at the College of Human Ecology, University of the Philippines Los Banos when I was teaching there as an Assistant Professor. I capitulated, despite knowing how tough it was to get into that scholarship program, since I confess, was desperate! It’s hard to raise the millions of pesos needed to even begin to think of studying a postgraduate degree in the United States as an international student. So, in early 2021, I applied for the very prestigious Fulbright Scholarship .

A picture of me and my Fulbright-CHED cohort after a seminar at the PAEF HQ.

My Fulbright journey begins…

I was out doing work the entire day as it was the first day of classes and as usual during the pandemic, there were so many adjustments to be made for the upcoming academic year. Never ending meetings, curriculum revisions, timetable modifications, reports to be made, and more that I missed an important text that day. September 20th, the next day at seven in the morning I read it and responded – the Director of the Philippine-American Educational Foundation called me right after and told me that he wanted to personally tell all the successful applicants about the outcome of their Fulbright Scholarships. I was the last call he made since I was completely oblivious with work the day before and didn’t immediately respond. I was so excited but at the same time dreadful! I had to now face the possible future that I would be gone for 5 years! And this was quite difficult since by the end of 2021, I was already planning to start construction of my house, I just accepted a very large consultancy project, still had some architecture projects ongoing, and I was still Director for Extensions Services at the College of Architecture . Thinking of all the preparation that had to be done and completing all the currently ongoing work made me queasy. Despite a successful application, I still had to get into a Ph.D. program a good university before the scholarship could be finalized and only after then I could make preparations for leaving. From September to December of 2021 my cohort of Fulbright-CHED scholars went through a series of seminars that helped us in the process of applying to different Ph.D. programs. From January to March of 2022, I received two acceptance letters, two rejections, and one waitlist. By April, I had registered for matriculation into the University of Washington, Seattle, and by May of 2022, I had signed my Fulbright contract after having chosen the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Signing my Fulbright-CHED Scholarship contract.

Lucky for me June till August was the summer months in the academic calendar in the Philippines which faculty allotted for admin, research, and public service work. That summer of 2022, though, I was busy packing my entire life’s worth of things into boxes. I would be giving up the place I was staying since I would not be able to build my house in time before I left. Packing more than ten years of your life into about 25 or so very large boxes is hard – physically and mentally. Being a stickler for organization, I wanted to pack similar things together, have physical lists printed for each box’s contents and digital records through lists and photographs. I got it done but not 100%, I left a few boxes open for the last things that would be packed and transferred to my mom’s place. Thank God for family who did the rest! Meanwhile, knowing I would be gone for a long time, I went to the beach for a quick vacation with some friends! Of course, where else would I be but in the sunny warm sands in the tropical beaches with cool crystal clear azure waters of Boracay and El Nido ?

Me at the beach at Boracay and during an island hopping boat tour in El Nido.

I also had a vacation with my family, and I made sure to spend lots of time with them as I would be away for such a long time. Every moment that I could (which is usually all time anyways), I stayed with my niece and nephew, my sisters, my brother-in-laws, and my mom and dad. This was honestly the hardest part of the preparations but knowing that in five years I would be back and that I could visit every year made preparing to leave a lot easier. I also had to meet with all my coworkers and my boss at the University of the Philippines, meet with partners and collaborators in the different work I do from projects at Credesign , and the DENR-NCR , to the SCPW , and especially with the Office of Senator Cynthia A. Villar .

Meeting with Senator Villar, and DENR NCR RED Caancan, and Atty. Corpuz of the Office of Senator Cynthia A. Villar. I am accompanied by my mom Mrs. Amy M. Lecciones.

Before leaving the Philippine Fulbright Commission, PAEF, held a reception for all the scholars of the 2022 cohort at the Garden Ballroom of the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel. This ballroom has good memories for me since this was also where my sister had her debut and that was a lot of fun and positive vibes!

At the 2022 Fulbright Reception meeting.

And, just like that, I had to leave a lot of what I was doing – from work at the university, to projects with the SCPW, and lots of unfinished work at the Las Piñas – Parañaque Wetland Park.

The day to leave for the USA arrives.

In the morning of September 12, with all what I could pack in my three check-in luggage, my carry-on and my personal bag, I was off to the airport accompanied by my family. This was a special day since it was also the same day I left for the United Kingdom to take my masters a good 11 years prior. To get to this point involved a lot of planning and praying. A lot of ups and downs – and a lot of help from family. At the airport I felt so uneasy, like I wish I didn’t have to go but at the same time I knew this was something I wanted. I always get sentimental with good-byes!

Me at the airport with family on the way to the US.

With a somewhat heavy heart, I said good bye to my mom and three sisters – Yayi, Aisa, and Sara.

And this journey continues in Seattle, Washington…

DOST inks MS, PhD scholarship pacts with 2 Canadian universities

A Department of Science and Technology (DOST) delegation signed agreements with two Canadian universities for Filipino scholarships in the North American country.

Science Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. led a DOST delegation to Canada from March 11 to 14 that enabled the science agency to sign agreements with the University of Saskatchewan (USask) and University of Alberta (UAlberta) to provide more scholarship opportunities for Filipinos in Canada.

The first agreement was the Implementing Agreement with the USask that aims to promote long-term collaboration and exchange in graduate education between the DOST and USask through the DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI), USask Graduate Scholarship Program (DOST-SEI-USask GSP).

The agreement creates a mechanism for doctoral students from the Philippines to study and conduct research at USask with support provided jointly through DOST-SEI scholarships and USask.

The DOST-SEI-USask GSP will provide up to 10 scholarships per year to eligible students at USask.

Through the partnership, USask will provide discounted rates (local Canadian rate for Filipino students) and research funding for their dissertation.

Meanwhile, the second agreement is a renewal contract, signed on March 13, which aims to promote long-term collaboration and exchange in graduate education through the continued implementation of the DOST-UAlberta Graduate Scholarship Program.

The scholarship program will create mechanisms for doctoral and master’s students from the Philippines to study and conduct research at UAlberta with support provided jointly through DOST-SEI scholarships and UAlberta.

“Economic prosperity is linked to the industries employing highly educated individuals like science workers,” Solidum said.

“The signed agreements on scholarship programs with the two universities will set the pace of our flourishing engagement with academic members here in Canada.  Through these initiatives, we hope to augment the STI human resources in the country and increase the quality of career opportunities for scientists and engineers,” the DOST Chief pointed out.

Solidum also led an orientation session on opportunities for the Filipino community in Saskatchewan and Edmonton, Canada.

The event for Saskatchewan was hosted by The Filipino-Canadian Association of Saskatchewan Inc., in collaboration with the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary. The event for Edmonton was hosted by the Philippine Business Society of Alberta and the Edmonton Philippine International Centre in collaboration with the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary.

Discussed during the orientation sessions were the programs and priorities of the DOST, with emphasis on the Balik Scientist Program’s background, its milestones, foundational impacts, eligibility requirements, application procedures, and incentives.

Solidum underscored the Philippine government’s commitment to supporting Filipino scientists in making significant contributions to local and global innovation.

“There is an unwritten qualification in becoming a Balik Scientist, it is the heart to serve the Filipino people and the country. It is what will truly drive us to become a true Balik Scientist,” the Science Secretary pointed out.

C elebrating empowerment and beauty, RV Group Philippines proudly unveiled NeuGlow Skin Serum on March 6 at the SEDA Residences Makati. This exclusive event, coinciding with Women's Month, gathered 25 distinguished dermatology doctors who were treated to insights and personal experiences from renowned speakers in the field.

Among the luminaries were Pachaiyappan Viswanathan MSc from Research and Development and international doctors Dr. Udaykumar MSc, MPhil PhD, and Dr. Pawan Kumar Gupta MBBS MD DNB PhD MNAMS. Each shared profound expertise, highlighting NeuGlow Skin Serum's transformative potential in skincare. Esteemed dermatologists from the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS), including Dr. Evangeline Handog and Dr. Peachy Paz-Lao, engaged in active discussions, and exchanged insights with the Research and Development team behind NeuGlow Skin Anti-aging Serum.

What distinguishes NeuGlow Skin Serum is its exceptional user experience. With a remarkable 100 percent acceptance and tolerance rate within the first month of use, users rave about its luxurious texture, delightful fragrance, and ease of application and absorption. Simply dispense 0.5g of the serum onto the face and massage it evenly, twice daily, for two months to experience optimal results. In a transformative moment for skincare, NeuGlow Skin Serum emerges as a revolutionary anti-aging brand, making its debut in the Philippines with groundbreaking patented technology. The soft launch orchestrated by RV Group Philippines marked a significant milestone in the beauty industry, as esteemed dermatologists from premier hospitals in Metro Manila were invited to experience firsthand the remarkable benefits of this innovative product, encouraging them to "get glowing now".

Leading the event were RV Group Philippines Director, Ajay Dhingra, and Chief Marketing Officer Shiuli Mukherji. Together, they orchestrated the NeuGlow Mask Off — a symbolic gesture where attendees removed their Gold Masks, signifying a newfound confidence in embracing beauty reborn.

As the event concluded, attendees left with a newfound sense of confidence and excitement, eager to incorporate NeuGlow Skin Serum into their skincare routines. With its promise of youthful radiance, this innovative product invites individuals to embark on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Embrace timeless beauty with NeuGlow Skin Serum and redefine skincare regimen today.
