Gifts for a PhD Student

chemistry phd gifts

Wondering what could be the perfect present for a friend, family member or colleague who are working towards a PhD? Choosing gifts for a PhD student can be tricky, we’re often living in shared houses with limited personal space and there are only so many novelty mugs a person can store!

Whether it’s to celebrate passing their viva, a special occasion or simply to show that you care, here are a few of my favourite suggestions.

Experience Gifts

I’m a big fan of gifting experiences rather than ‘things’ and I believe they are particularly well suited to those early on in their PhD, as a lot of students may be fairly new to the place they’re now studying. PhD stipends only stretch so far, so gifting experiences can be a great way to build memories for those with limited disposable income.

When I lived in London during my PhD I always asked my family for gift vouchers for experiences. This allowed me to visit escape rooms, walk over the O2, go for afternoon tea and see some fantastic West End shows (courtesy of Love Theatre vouchers).

Experiences can be varied to fit every personality type and some may also allow you to support great causes at the same time, such as Migrateful cooking classes for those in London, Bristol or Brighton.

Screenshot of Migrateful's webpage offering cookery classes.

Tripadvisor is a great place for finding ideas for activities. Groupon can also be handy place to check for deals, just make sure that any restrictions on dates/times won’t be an issue.

Subscription Gifts

Lots of us sign up for subscriptions these days, whether for the obligatory Netflix or for various apps. If you’re stuck for a gift for a PhD student why not offer to pay for a few months of a subscription to their favourite apps?

Some ideas for app subscriptions:

  • Super Duolingo for language learners
  • Headspace or other mindfulness and meditation apps which could come in handy with managing stress during a PhD

Relaxing Gifts

It’s always nice to have a break from work and a voucher for a massage or spa day could provide much needed relaxation. I’d again suggest using Tripadvisor to find recommendations and try to find a deal through Groupon.

Check with the giftee whether they’d be able to attend mid-week. If so you may be able to get more for your money with an off-peak rate and they’ll find it easier to relax with fewer people around.

A PhD student can never have too much food, particularly if it’s quick to prepare or readily available for snacking. Food gifts are brilliant for every budget and here are a few of my favourite suggestions.

Brownies by Post

My partner recently went on the hunt for the best vegan brownies and came across the Best Ever Brownie Company. I can attest that their brownies are absolutely delicious and everyone I’ve sent them to has loved them.

Screenshot of the Best Ever Brownie Company homepage

If you know your PhD student well then a gift hamper can be a lovely way to show that you care.

Hampers put together by someone you know can be a fun way to try out things you wouldn’t normally have seen. For Christmas/birthdays by Dad has started giving a selection of new vegan foods he finds and they’re always appreciated. If in doubt pick a theme and roll with it. For my sister’s birthday I recently made up a shoe-box sized hamper with American treats all themed around rainbow sprinkles!

If you don’t live nearby you can also find some lovely hampers online from companies such as:

  • Social Supermarket
  • Fortnum & Mason

Whether homemade or shop bought I think hampers make great gifts for a PhD student.

Healthy Ready Meals

If you’re keen to gift more substantial meals then COOK and Mindful Chef are two options. Both allow you to buy gift vouchers which your recipient can use to buy whatever they fancy.

I’ve gifted COOK vouchers to several friends and family members and the meals feel home cooked and are very tasty. Do check whether your giftee lives near a store, as if not they’ll probably want to order several items in one go and as such will need a fair bit of freezer space. Therefore COOK vouchers may not as suitable for those living in house shares.

I haven’t personally tried Mindful Chef ready meals, although I have tried several of the recipe boxes, but they look like a fantastic choice for anyone looking for quick and healthy meals.

Takeaway Voucher

If you’re keen to get a food gift but not sure what’s best then a takeaway gift voucher could be the perfect solution. Just Eat do gift vouchers and they’re sure to go down well.

Educational Gifts

PhD students are by nature very curious and plenty will be keen to expand their knowledge beyond their particular field. I’m personally always keen to learn more about the world so anything which helps me expand my horizons goes down favourably.

Subscription to a Learning Platform

Brilliant – Provides interactive courses to help people expand their knowledge of concepts within Maths, Computer Science, Data Analysis, Programming, Science and Engineering. Subscriptions start from a three month period.

Nebula – Nebula has advert-free educational videos and podcasts from over 150 Youtube content creators. Some of the videos on the platform are also available to watch on Youtube with ads, but there are around 60 original shows on the platform as well.

Subscription to Kiwi Crate

If you’re keen to gift a physical present then a subscription to Kiwi Crate could be a lovely idea.

For those who like working with their hands the Eureka Crate is a great way to build skills and explore engineering in a fun and immersive way. Who wouldn’t want to build their own desk lamp? They also do Maker crates for those with an artistic side.

Screenshot of KiwiCo's Eureka Crate webpage showing a young adult assembling a desk lamp kit.

Practical Gifts

So far nearly everything on our list has involved either experiences or consumables, but there are a few practical gifts which could be of great benefit to a PhD student and not take up too much space.

Whether it’s for keeping water cool or keeping coffee hot, a drink container will always come in handy. It could also help with minimising costs if drinks are prepared at home and then taken into uni.

Macbook Air Laptop

A recommendation of a £1000 laptop probably isn’t going to be applicable for most readers. However, if you’re a family member looking to spend money on a computer for someone starting a PhD I can highly recommend MacBook Airs. These days almost all software can run on both PC and Mac and even the M1 MacBook Air which is now several years old is more than powerful enough for most people.

Be sure to make use of Apple’s educational discount for up to 10% off.

Moleskine Notebook & Fisher Space Pen

Notebooks always come in handy, so why not gift your PhD student one at the top of the range. Combine a moleskine notebook with a fisher space pen and you’ve got the perfect way to keep experiment notes orderly and neat.

Moleskine notebooks are vegan, come in a range of colours and you can even pay extra for personalisation. Fisher space pens were originally designed for use in zero gravity and can be used upside down, underwater and at extreme temperatures. Perfect for all kinds of science-ing!

For those who don’t own one already an e-reader is a great way to get back into reading. I personally found reading to be a great way to take a break from my PhD . E-readers such as a Kindle are light and easy to pop in a bag!

Through Project Gutenberg you can access loads of classic books for free and if you opt for a Kindle there are often Amazon offers available for 99p books.

Novelty Gifts

If you are keen to get your PhD student a novelty gift I’d recommend buying a handmade item from a small business on Etsy. I’m a big fan of getting something practical such as a notebook, mug, keyring, chopping board etc.

Just make sure to check where it ships from – I typically filter so that only businesses in the UK are shown.

chemistry phd gifts

Here are a few of the potential gifts for a PhD student that I found in just a few minutes of browsing:

  • Atoms to Astronauts – STEM mugs and notebooks
  • Science Scribbles – Enamel pins and stickers
  • My Mini Laboratory – Microscope keyrings and virus planters
  • Chemistree Crafts – Wide selection of scientific jewellery, including conical flask earrings
  • Bakerology – Science themed cookie cutters – who wouldn’t want to eat a neuron shaped cookie?!

Charitable Donations

Q: What do you get for the person who has everything?

A: A gift for someone else!

It can be hard to know what to get someone when they say there’s nothing that they want, but if your giftee would truly prefer to not receive a gift then make a charitable donation on their behalf.

Choose a charity or cause which is close to their heart and you’ll have a meaningful gift which provides benefit to others as well.

Top Tips on Buying Gifts for a PhD Student

  • If your PhD student is short on space stick to gifting an experience or a consumable item
  • Everyone needs to eat, so food gifts can be a great safe choice for PhD students
  • Feeling stuck for what to buy? Ask! Some people enjoy surprises and others will prefer to set strict guidelines for present buying. I’m very frank and honest with my own family now around receiving gifts as I’m fairly minimalist and don’t like receiving anything I won’t use.
  • Short on money? Why not make something homemade. Cupcakes in particular can be a quick and easy gift and are always sure to go down well.

Do you have any other suggestions for gifts for a PhD student or graduate? Are there any gifts you received during your own PhD which you really valued? Let me know in the comments!

You Can’t Go Wrong With…

If you’re at a loss thinking about what to buy a Ph.D. graduate as a present, you can’t go wrong with cash, checks, and gift cards.

There’s no denying that PhDs can be incredibly expensive. Just look at the data from EducationData.org , which states that federal graduate student borrowers have $91,148 average loan balances. It doesn’t matter if they earned their degree in person or online — debt is debt. Cutting a check for any amount can help a PhD graduate buy what they need (or want). They can also choose to pay the amount toward their debt.

Of course, giving cash or a check isn’t everyone’s idea of a good present. In that case, you can always give a gift card .

Amazon Gift Cards come in nice packaging, like this graduation gift box.

Amazon allows you to choose your gift card amount,  starting from $25 and going all the way up to $2,000. You can also send your gift card digitally if you’d rather skip the box altogether.

On Amazon, you can also choose gift cards from specific brands. For example, if you’d like to give the gift of tech, you can opt for an Apple gift card between $25-$500. And if you’re looking for PhD graduation gifts for her , try a Sephora gift card  between $25-$250.

How Much Should You Spend on PhD Graduation Gifts?

The cost of your PhD gift depends on your relationship with the graduate. It can be anywhere from $10-$300, or maybe even more if you wish — but never spend more than you can afford. Here’s a general guide for how much you might want to spend:

  • Acquaintances : <$30
  • Friends : $25-$50
  • Closest friends and relatives: $50-$100
  • Significant others, children, and close loved ones: $100-$300+

Avoid superfluously expensive gifts for people you aren’t close with — that’ll just make them uncomfortable!

Finishing a doctorate is no easy feat — even the online PhDs  take endless hours to complete. Bottom line? Graduating with a PhD is a cause for celebration! And what better way to celebrate your new PhD-holder loved one than with a thoughtful present ?

PhD graduation gifts don’t have to be expensive or luxurious. They can be something as simple as a mug or a shirt with a witty PhD-related message. Doctorate graduation gifts can even be sentimental, like an engraved business card case.

If someone you know recently achieved a PhD (or even an MBA ), this list of the best graduation gifts for PhD students might offer some gift inspiration.

It can be challenging to come up with ideas for PhD graduation gifts, but there’s always a fantastic option out there waiting for you. But remember: if you can’t come up with any ideas that feel right, everyone loves cash or gift cards!

Do you have any other PhD graduation gift suggestions? Leave them in a comment below!

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you give a phd graduate.

The perfect PhD graduation gifts for doctoral graduates depend on your preference — unless the recipient specifically requests something. Cash, checks, and gift cards are popular options but may seem impersonal. Instead, you might give the graduate something pragmatic, like food, or something heartfelt, like a craft. Of course, the 15 suggestions on this list are also great PhD gifts.

What Are Good PhD Graduation Gifts for a University Graduate?

It truly depends — you can give something generic like a mug or shirt with a witty PhD-related saying or something more aligned with your recipient’s interest if you know them well.

What Is the Going Rate for PhD Graduation Gifts?

It really depends on your relationship with the recipient. Gifts can cost anywhere from $10-$300 and sometimes even more. If you’re more an acquaintance than a loved one, choose something on the lower price end to avoid making the recipient uncomfortable.

Is it OK to Give a Check as a PhD Graduation Gift?

Absolutely! Although some people may find checks or cash impersonal, a PhD graduate could probably use the money. After all, they can put it toward student loans or buy something they really need.

Chemistry Graduate Student Awarded James L. Carmon Scholarship

Portrait of Erica Mitchell, recipient of the James L. Carmon Scholarship

UGA Department of Chemistry graduate student Erica Mitchell has been named the 2024 recipient of the James L. Carmon Scholarship, given by the UGA Office of Research. Named for the late James L. Carmon, a UGA faculty member for 36 years who helped make the university a leader in computing research and development, the academic year scholarship was established by the Control Data Corporation and is awarded to a graduate student whose dissertation/thesis research reflects state-of-the-art utilization of computer and/or networking technology in the sciences or creative arts.

Erica Mitchell, a Ph.D. candidate in the Schaefer research group in the Department of Chemistry, investigates the properties of molecules using a combination of mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The prediction of reliable molecular properties requires a trade-off between accuracy and computational cost. During her time at UGA, Mitchell has worked to implement explicitly correlated methods, which increase the accuracy of electronic structure theory, and apply density functional methods, which decrease the computational burden. Using automatic differentiation or AD, she is striving to get first- and second-order derivatives of explicitly correlated methods to obtain optimal molecular structures and vibrations at a low computational cost. This research will offer a new approach to achieve molecular properties by utilizing AD for a method with no known derivatives. By generating exact derivative properties of explicitly correlated methods, chemists will have access to highly reliable and accurate results to predict chemical properties, thereby aiding experimental observations.

Congratulations to Ms. Mitchell on this outstanding achievement!

Canada pledges dramatic pay rise for PhDs, postdocs – but many will not benefit

Rebecca Trager

The Canadian government has pledged a significant investment in its graduate students and postdoctoral scholars after more than two decades of stagnation . Its 2024 budget proposal , announced on 16 April , provides C$825 million (£481 million) over the next five years to support next-generation researchers by increasing both the number and value of stipends. However, the pay rise will only be seen by graduates who win scarce Tri-Council grants, although it is hoped that as these stipends rise others will need to too to compete.

The budget, which the House of Commons must pass before it is finalised, would provide nearly C$200 million per year, increasing annual master’s and PhD scholarships to $27,000 and $40,000, respectively, and postdoctoral fellowships to $70,000. The budget’s passage is not guaranteed – it needs the support of at least one of three political parties other than the ruling Liberal party.

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, and Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s deputy prime minister and finance minister, presented the budget on 16 April. The package included funding that ended over 20 years of stagnation in PhD and postdoctoral stipends

The planned increases represent a dramatic jump. Currently, the typical annual stipend in Canada is around C$17,500 for master’s students, C$24,000 for PhDs and C$45,000 for postdocs. The government is also proposing C$1.8 billion to the different funding agencies in Canada over five years to increase core research grant funding.

The funding surge is expected to increase the number of research scholarships and fellowships provided by the government, building to approximately 1720 more graduate students or fellows benefiting each year.

Graduate student and postdoc pay in Canada has remained unchanged for over 20 years . A national survey last year by the Ottawa Science Policy Network found that nearly 90% of graduate students in the country reported feeling stressed and anxious about their finances, and almost one-third said they have considered leaving academia due to financial pressures.

‘These fellowships had the same value for many years, which means their ability to support students had, in many cases, fallen below a livable amount,’ explains Bruce Arndtsen , a chemistry professor at McGill University. ‘Many departments and institutions therefore needed to top these fellowships up from research grants simply to get to our normal stipend level.’

Most chemistry graduates ineligible for raise

Such a significant increase to graduate student stipends in Canada will give top students a competitive stipend and enable Canada to to better retain these students, Arndtsen adds. ‘It will also allow the use of grant funds to better support their research activities rather than topping their fellowship up to needed levels.’

However, he notes that these stipend increases will only apply to the select few who win prestigious Tri-Council awards, and the majority of chemistry graduate students in Canada do not receive these top fellowships but are instead paid from research grants. In fact, Arndtsen notes that funding for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s major chemistry funding programme has also remained stagnant for decades, and he expresses hope that these grants will receive a similar increase in the near term.

Anne Labarre , a sixth-year PhD chemistry student at McGill who is involved in computational drug discovery, celebrated the government’s announcement. Labarre says the PhD stipends at her chemistry department are currently fixed at around C$26,000 per year and emphasises that this increase is significant considering the recent inflation and rent increases in Montreal.

Matthew Berg, who received a PhD in biochemistry from Western University in Canada in 2021 and is now a postdoc at the University of Washington in the US, is optimistic. ‘These increases are going to set the bar for where funding should be for trainees in the sciences and in graduate school,’ he states. ‘Right now, a lot of Canadian graduate students struggle,’ Berg continues. ‘We’ve heard stories of students having to rely on food banks and different support systems in order to just make it through their degree.’

Last year there was a nationwide walkout of students and academics in Canada who were demanding more federal funding for graduate students and postdoc researchers. This month, graduate teaching assistants at Western University went on strike to protest what they deemed unfair wages. Meanwhile, a union representing striking academic workers at York University in Toronto, including teaching assistants and graduate workers, appeared to have reached a tentative deal on 14 April after being on strike over pay since late February.

Berg says he was lucky – he received one of one of the elusive federal awards to support him as a PhD candidate in Canada, which he says was worth about C$35,000 annually for three years. As a postdoc in the US, Berg says he currently receives significantly better compensation, with a stipend equivalent to more than C$90,000.

‘My dream after my PhD is to move to back to Canada and be a professor there,’ he says. ‘But it does make me nervous how difficult it is to get funding there and I don’t want to run a lab where my students are struggling to survive.’

Michel Cayouette , the vice president of research and academic affairs at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute, says the C$1.8 billion funding boost is great news but will be insufficient to allow supervisors to increase the value of their trainees’ stipends to the amounts announced for award recipients. ‘This means that the vast majority of students and postdocs will continue to struggle financially,’ Cayouette warns. ‘There is therefore more work to do in coming years to fill the gap in funding and ensure that all trainees receive a liveable wage.’

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

4. Rocketbook Matrix cloud-connected reusable paper notebook

This is my favorite clever invention. It was inevitable.   Rocketbook   finally solved the problem of merging your hand-written notes into your favorite digital services. You simply use their app to take a photo of your pages of notes and the QR code and marked symbols on each page trigger the app to send the digitized page to any of the 9 pre-set digital destinations you choose. This includes OneNote, Evernote, Google Drive, Dropbox and even specific emails. Want a shortcut to send notes via email straight to your colleague or boss? This is what you’re looking for.

The   Rocketbook Matrix   is my personal favorite because it's designed for more technical work. It's got 30 pages of graphing paper and one regular lined page for taking notes, plus a built-in ruler on the inside cover. Did I mention they are resuable? Use their " Pilot Frixion " pens and then wipe the page with a damp cloth after uploading your notes to use it all over again (and win one for the environment!).

If it's sold out   on their website   (it's very popular) - you can also get it   on Amazon .

7. Louis Pasteur Wine Quote Canvas

Biochemists are some of the biggest sommeliers I know. Maybe because wine is made by fermentation, one of the first biochemistry reactions ever mastered by humans. This little 5x7 inch canvas by renowned biochemist Louis Pasteur is usually hung near a desk or is thick enough to stand upright on its own.

8. DIY Gin-making kit of Craft Beer kit

If wine isn't their first choice, biochemists also have a reputation for being fascinated by gins and homebrewing. Nearly every one I've known either wanted to open their own brewery or distillery, and some universities even often elective classes on alcohol production. It's a fun way to use their extensive training!

If your biochemist enjoys craft beverages, one of these kits is an excellent way to open a door to something they could one day turn into their life's passion. My favorite kits are this  gin-making kit  and this  amber ale brew kit .

11. Lab Coat Pocket Protector

Biochemists fuse two difficult skill sets - biology and chemistry - and need a wide array of tools at hand to keep up with them. But how do you organize them all at arm’s reach? The venerable Pocket Protector became a cultural icon in the 1960's and 1970's, but somewhere along the way the newer generation of STEM researchers forgot about them. Biochemists need these back in their labs to stay organized, stay efficient, protect their work clothes, and finish their experiments without being late to lunch. So we researched and tested every type ever made to methodically solve each problem and come up with this refreshed design . Available in spruce green, sapphire blue, and faded pink - the top 3 colors voted on by our fans! You can even get it from our Amazon page if that's easier.

13.    Best books for biochemists to read for pleasure (not textbooks!)

Biochemists spend a ton of time reading textbooks and journal articles. It’s important to occasionally break that cycle and dive into a book for pleasure. Below are a few of our favorite science-related books that will be an enjoyable read for a biochemist.

Culinary Reactions: The Everyday Chemistry of Cooking

This book finally made cooking enjoyable for me. It's always been one of those imprecise arts where you just follow the directions and hope to get it about right. As a scientist, understanding what I'm doing is paramount. This cookbook walks you through the chemistry behind your every-day cooking recipes so you can make adjustments and improvements by logic, not guesswork! Any biochemist would love to have this book to apply their advanced knowledge of chemistry to something they do every day.

Anne Hathaway recalls having to make out with 10 different guys during ‘gross’ chemistry tests in the 2000s

Anne Hathaway and Adrian Grenier in "The Devil Wears Prada."

“The Idea of You” star Anne Hathaway recalled having to make out with 10 different guys during “gross” chemistry tests in the early 2000s.

In  a new interview with V Magazine, the Oscar winner reflected on her early days in the business and how she felt the need to go along with questionable practices if she wanted to work.

“Back in the 2000s — and this did happen to me — it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry, which is actually the worst way to do it,” Hathaway, 41, said.

“I was told, ‘We have 10 guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’” she recalled. “And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross.”

Anne Hathaway, Hugh Dancy in "Ella Enchanted"

Hathway said she was “terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being labeled ‘difficult'” despite being “so young.”

“So I just pretended I was excited and got on with it,” she continued.

The “Princess Diaries” star, who didn’t cite any movies by name, noted that that was just how things worked back then.

“It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me,” she said. “It was just a very different time and now we know better.”

Anne Hathaway in white

Fast forward a few decades and now Hathaway is starring and producing her new film, “The Idea of You” — meaning she had a say in how the casting process worked.

In the film, Hathaway plays a single mother in her 40s who falls in love with a much younger male singer. However, the “Devil Wears Prada” star said she didn’t need to kiss a bunch of 20-something-year-old men to find her perfect co-star.

Instead of swapping spit, the actress asked each auditioning actor to sing a song they felt the characters “would love.”

“[A song] that they would put on to get my character to dance, and then we’d do a short little improv,” she explained. “I was sitting in a chair like we had come in from dinner or a walk or something, we pressed play, and we just started dancing together.”

Ultimately, Nicholas Galitzine landed the role after choosing a song by The Alabama Shakes that immediately got Hathaway up and dancing.

“We had met a number of young men already, but I remember laughing when Nick walked in because he was so ridiculously perfect for the part,” she recalled. “I just thought, he is it,”

The  trailer  for the upcoming movie, based on the bestselling book by Robinne Lee, came out last month and quickly became a hot topic of conversation.

While some viewers were disturbed by the fake couple’s 14-year age gap, others —  including Whoopi Goldberg — were all for it.

On an episode of “The View,” Goldberg called out people who  labeled Hathaway’s character “disgusting,” arguing that the storyline is nothing “new” and we see men dating much younger women all the time.

“What is the problem?! If you don’t wanna see the movie, don’t see the movie! Stop bitching about it!” Goldberg said.
