Purposes of Berkshire Community College, 1960 – 1982

  • First, to provide high quality, low cost education for qualified high school graduates who wish to attend two years of college within commuting distance of home.
  • Second, to commit itself to excellence in teaching as the most vital work of this college.
  • Third, to provide two years of liberal arts education for those students who plan to continue their studies for a baccalaureate degree. Other students may take the liberal arts transfer program if they qualify for it even though they do not plan to go on to another college or a university after Berkshire Community College.
  • Fourth, to offer programs that combine liberal arts with business or technical courses for students who wish to be employed after two years of college. These programs reflect the needs of business and industry in the Berkshire region for qualified personnel and the desires of the students of the region for specific kinds of occupational programs.
  • Fifth, to provide formal and informal guidance services for the student who wants or needs advice in selecting his college program and his future occupation, and in adjusting himself to life as a useful adult citizen of his community.
  • Sixth, to provide the community with educational and cultural services that enhance the tradition of the Berkshire region.

The why and how of biblical counseling: christ-centered biblical counseling.

  •   May 4, 2021
  • Book , Methodology , Pastoral Resources , People Who Offer Care , People Who Train Caregivers , Theology

A Word from Bob: As the Founding Executive Director of the Biblical Counseling Coalition (BCC), I had the privilege of serving, along with my lifelong friend, Pastor Steve Viars , as the General Editors of Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling (CCBC). First released in 2013 by Harvest House and the Biblical Counseling Coalition, an updated, revised edition was released in April 2021. So this is a great time to reintroduce you to this comprehensive, collaboratively written biblical counseling resource— Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling: Changing Lives with God’s Changeless Truth .

The BCC and CCBC

Here’s the launch Vision Statement of the Biblical Counseling Coalition:

The Biblical Counseling Coalition exists to encourage collaborative relationships and to provide robust resources related to biblical counseling, Christian living, and local church ministry.

And here’s the BCC’s initial Passion Statement:

Promoting Personal Change Centered on the Person of Christ Through the Personal Ministry of the Word.

Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling beautifully fulfills the BCC’s mission. The book brought together over three dozen leading biblical counseling authors (collaborative relationships) to provide a wealth of wisdom for life and ministry (robust resources) that focuses on Christ-centered change (Passion Statement).

A Theology and Methodology of Biblical Counseling

As the subtitle suggests, the purpose of Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling is to equip God’s people to understand how to change lives with Christ’s changeless truth. The goal of the book is to increase people’s confidence in the richness and relevancy of God’s Word to address real-life issues. Just as there is currently an encouraging return to gospel-centered preaching, Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling seeks to be a catalyst for the return of God’s people to gospel-centered one-another ministry.

We’ve organized Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling into two parts. In Part One, you’ll benefit from a theology of biblical counseling—the Why:

  • Why the Bible is sufficient and relevant for addressing the issues we face in daily life and relationships.
  • Why biblical counseling is effective in helping people face life’s struggles in Christ’s strength.

In Part Two, you’ll enjoy a methodology of biblical counseling—the How:

  • How you can lead struggling, hurting people to the hope and strength available only in Christ.
  • How to counsel in a way that is Christ-centered, God-glorifying, relevant, and practical.

The Roster of Authors

We’re thankful for all the men and women who contributed to this book. They are biblical counseling leaders who have solid theological backgrounds combined with years of practical experience in ministering God’s Word to hurting people.

We’re especially excited about the pairings in each chapter—over three-quarters of the chapters are co-authored. Readers benefit from chapters co-authored by Senior Pastors and their Counseling Pastors, such as Mark Dever and Deepak Reju, Steve Viars and Rob Green, and John Piper and Jack Delk. Readers also enjoy chapters co-authored by pastors and professors, such as Ernie Baker and Jonathan Holmes, Robert Cheong and Heath Lambert, and Robert Jones and Brad Hambrick.

Our Audience: You!

Who are the readers we’ve envisioned benefiting from Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling ? Folks like you .

Picture a committed Christian sitting at Starbucks with her best friend and fellow church member. Her friend has finally opened up to her about the fear and anxiety she experiences daily. We’ve written Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling to help this committed Christian and thousands like her to know how to relate God’s Word lovingly and carefully to struggles like fear and worry.

Picture a pastor in his office with a couple who has already seen a divorce attorney. The pastor is secretly thinking, “They taught me how to preach in seminary, but not how to help a struggling couple to change.” We’ve written Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling for this pastor and thousands like him.

Picture a Bible college or seminary student in his only course in pastoral counseling. He’s  thinking, “I’m confident in God’s Word, but how do I grow in my competence in using God’s Word?” We’ve written Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling to help this student, and thousands more, understand a biblical theology and methodology for helping hurting people find hope and victory in Christ.

Picture the Christian counselor who loves the Lord and His Word but wants to know how to use God’s Word confidently and competently in counseling. We’ve written Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling to help this counselor and thousands of others to appreciate the richness and robustness of the Scriptures and learn how to use God’s Word relevantly, relationally, and powerfully in counseling.

What’s Unique?

There are many excellent books available on biblical counseling. For a list of over 1,000 such books, see The Annual Guide to Biblical Counseling Resources .

That said, we’re seeking to address some unique goals through Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling . We want readers to:

  • Receive a robust, loving, best-practice guide not only for why our authors love biblical counseling but why the reader should embrace biblical counseling.
  • Be encouraged to trust God’s Word to provide rich insight for living in the midst of even the most difficult times of suffering and relational conflict and the most distressing battles against besetting sins.

We’ve designed the book to:

  • Refute the stereotype that biblical counseling is harsh (unloving) and simplistic (unrealistic in the real world). We’ve prayed that it will be the remedy to the insufficient “take-two-verses-and-call-me-in-the-morning” method and the antidote to a “one-verse-one-problem-one-solution” approach to people helping.
  • Challenge the teaching that we need Christ plus something else—refuting the idea that the Bible is an insufficient guide to effective relational living.
  • Equip readers to use God’s Word effectively and confidently in their church and para-church ministries as one-another ministers and soul care givers.

What Others Are Saying

We’ve been encouraged by the endorsements of a wide cross-section of leaders. For example, Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth shares:

“Those of us who are seeking to help needy, hurting people find hope in Christ owe a great debt of gratitude to those who contributed to this rich resource. It will make us more biblically grounded in our counsel and inspire us to believe that He really can transform lives!”

Dr. Al Mohler adds:

“The rise of the biblical counseling movement is one of the most helpful and hopeful developments in the recent history of the Christian church. This movement has returned counseling where it belongs, in the church and in the Scriptures. In this massively important book, some of the leading figures in the biblical counseling movement set forth a wealth of wisdom. We have needed this book for a long time.”

People ask, “So, what’s new or different about this newly-released edition?” Primarily, three chapters have been re-written with new authors. This new content comes from Randy Patten (one chapter) and Robert Cheong (two chapters) and includes material that strengthens what the book offers. We’ve also stepped away from the book’s association with James MacDonald as one of the General Editors and co-author of two chapters.

Research Impact Academy

Here is what you should do to generate your vision

For several year’s now, I have been working with researchers to develop their research vision. In the beginning, some researchers thought this was a little strange, and I was even met with the comment, “Tamika, a vision is something companies have”!

However, since then, there have been several examples of why having a vision for your research is necessary.

Examples of why you should have a research vision

The first of these came from a blog post looking at the elements of research impact pathways. This work had looked at the Research Excellence Framework impact narratives from the 2014 assessment in the UK and determined the common features of the successful pathways, of which the first element was a clear vision. The second example was a media piece from the University of Toronto , where a Canadian researcher Dr Anna Taddio, was interviewed. In that article, Dr Taddio clearly stated her research vision and even called it her vision. The third reason for having a vision for your research, came as recently as this year when the National Health and Medical Research Council in Australia introduced a specific section into the Investigator Grant proposal asking for the project vision.

What is your research vision?

Well, you can have several, you may have one that is your career vision, and you may have one for each of your research projects or a program of work. In each case, your vision is your destination postcard.

Benefits of knowing your vision

Aside from the need for this in grants, a career vision will help you make decisions and stop you from getting detracted from what you want to achieve. Often researchers and in particular, early career researchers, tell me that they have so much to do and different opportunities that they don’t know which ones to accept and reject. Having a clear vision can help you to decide if the answer is yes or no. When you know where you are heading, you can say no to all the shiny new objects that take you off your path, unless of course, that’s where you want to go.

A program or project level vision is useful in two ways.

  • It helps you to clearly articulate where the work is heading and attract likeminded team members and collaborators. When you know and work to your vision, it connects the team and brings everyone on the journey.
  • A clear research vision is useful in talking to external collaborators, it gives you and them clarity about why you are undertaking the work, and it helps you to know if you align well with their organisation.

Articulating your research vision

Now we need to consider your vision, not an easy task. This takes time to get it right. Everyone has different ways of creating their vision and usually what happens with researchers is that we make the vision too detailed and wordy. That’s why my preferred structure is to write out both your vision and mission as follows.

Your vision statement describes what you want to achieve in the future. How long to the “future” will depend on if this is for a project or your career. Your vision should inspire you, and in the case of a project vision, it should inspire your team. A vision helps shape your understanding of why you are doing what you do. Your vision is your WHY.

Your mission is about the present state; it is the detail underpinning your vision. Your mission answers the following questions:

  • What do I do?
  • How do I do it?
  • Who do I do it for?

Example of research vision

I mentioned earlier the article from the University of Toronto , in that article, Dr Anna Taddio outlined her vision.

My vision is to make children all over the world healthier by improving their experiences during needle procedures. Dr Anna Taddio

Reading the article further, I was able to ascertain the answers to the questions required for a mission statement.

  • How: increasing the number of vaccinated youth through the implementation of interventions and programs.
  • Who: Youth aged 6-18
  • What: best research evidence on managing pain and fear of needles

Take a look at the article , and you can see that by understanding her vision and mission, Dr Taddio was able to articulate her work clearly and tell the reader why she is doing it.
