Not your average professor

“I enjoy teaching and learning along with my students. Each summer, I look forward to taking a group of students to London as part of a short-term study abroad program offered through UNI. I think every student should study abroad, even if it is just for a couple of weeks!”

- Carolyn Hildebrandt, Professor of Psychology

Katie Currier

Panther POV

“I have learned the importance of connection and networking. There have been so many wonderful people I have met -- my professors, peers in the classroom, and people I met through organizations -- who have been such a wonderful help throughout my time here. Many who believe in me and want to see me succeed, and vice versa. Having that support system has been so beneficial and has allowed me to branch out and grow various other skills in organization, time-management, collaboration, and decision-making.”

- Katie Currier, Psychology Major

Lucy Gee

“One thing I love about Psychology is that it is not limited in the career paths it leads to, I was a Psychology major and ended up in Financial Services! Taking classes in Industrial and Organizational Psychology can benefit you regardless of the path or industry you chose.”

Pandemic course improved COVID-19 knowledge, study finds

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 1,300 students enrolled in a three-week summer immersion course, “ The Pandemic: Science and Society ,” at Washington University in St. Louis. The innovative course envisioned by Feng Sheng Hu, the Richard G. Engelsmann Dean of Arts & Sciences, brought together experts from across WashU and around the country.

A new study published in the journal Humanities & Social Sciences Communication examines the course’s impact and implications for effective public health messaging for university students going forward.

Krista Milich

Reviewing data submitted three months after the course concluded, researchers found a person’s preferred information sources made a difference in their level of knowledge, risk perception and protective behaviors. People with higher COVID knowledge practiced more protective behaviors during the fall 2020 semester.

“We can emphasize the need for protective behaviors without causing a feeling of dread,” said Krista Milich , an assistant professor of biological anthropology in Arts & Sciences who designed and taught the COVID-19 course. The pandemic course used such an approach to encourage safety behaviors while reiterating that those behaviors can make a difference.

“The course also created a sense of community during a time when many people were feeling isolated,” Milich said.

The course was free to all full-time WashU students and ran from Aug. 17-Sept. 4, 2020. Students from all WashU schools participated in online lectures and discussion boards, completed quizzes and created a piece of communication — either a video, an infographic, a letter to the editor or a work of art — about the virus. Students shared their work on social media using the hashtag #COVIDcourse.

The new study analyzed data from nearly 1,000 anonymous questionnaires. The majority of respondents were WashU students (83%). About half of the respondents took the course, and another 26% had some exposure to course content, either by watching lectures online or hearing from others who attended.

Respondents said their top sources of COVID-19 information were family (52%), official health organization websites (50%), news media (47.4%), friends (38.6%) and the pandemic course (32.4%). Of these, health organizations and the course were associated with higher levels of COVID knowledge, more accurate risk perception and stronger protective behaviors.

“In our study, those who relied on social media had lower COVID knowledge scores and personal safety scores than those who relied on official sources,” Milich said. Using friends or family as a primary source of information was also associated with lower COVID knowledge.

While the new analysis focuses on implications for future public health communication, the results indirectly point to a second success: WashU administrators largely achieved their goals for the course. Hu and other leaders hoped an immersive, interdisciplinary course would positively influence personal behaviors and improve compliance with recommended safety steps.

“I’m so pleased to see the positive impact the pandemic course had on our students and campus community,” Hu said. “This course showcases two hallmarks of Arts & Sciences — collaboration and creativity — and I hope it can serve as a model for other universities seeking to improve public health knowledge on campus.”

The benefits of such a course are wide-reaching, Milich said. A university practicing safer behaviors can ultimately protect the larger community by preventing spillovers that could affect vulnerable individuals in the area.  “Our study illustrates how universities can design a curriculum to impact the behaviors of students during a pandemic, which will likely have positive impacts on the surrounding community,” Milich said. “Providing reliable and accessible public health information may be an important way to reduce harm during future global health crises.”

Northeastern University Graduate Programs

Bouvé College of Health Sciences

Applied behavior analysis.

The Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis prepares graduates to become behavior analysts, serving in supervisory and consultant roles within schools, agencies, hospitals, and other organizations that seek to apply behavioral science to improve socially significant behaviors.

The MS in Applied Behavior Analysis program is verified by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) as meeting the coursework requirements to sit for the 5th Edition Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) exam. This online program includes seven core courses in behavior analysis plus an additional three courses that extend the student’s familiarity with clinical procedures and with the research supporting their use. Students are given the option of completing supervised fieldwork on their own or by enrolling in courses that provide supervision through the Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork option.

Northeastern University became one of the first universities to offer a Master's degree in applied behavior analysis when it was created in 1976. In 2013, the MABA program became a fully online program which employs evidence-based practice in applied behavior analysis and online learning experiences.

More Details

Unique features.

  • Asynchronous online program with optional synchronous components, allows students to complete their degree in a way that works for their life and commitments
  • Choose how to accrue your field work hours as required by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board

Program Objectives

This program was designed to prepare students to employ the principles and procedures derived from research to create meaningful change in the lives of their clients. This is achieved through in-depth exploration of foundational concepts such as classical and operant conditioning, reinforcement, motivating operations, stimulus control, and more. Advanced courses build upon this foundation, preparing graduates to address the most complex behavior problems and learning challenges.

Career Outlook

Many students become Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) after graduation. Our graduates often go on to work in schools or private agencies, providing oversight of behavioral and educational programming for individuals with autism and related disabilities. Graduates also work in research or hospital settings, or they pursue terminal degrees in behavior analysis or related fields.

Accreditation Description

The Master’s program is verified by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) as providing the course content required to sit for the BACB exam. See the data: BCBA Examination Pass Rates for Verified Course Sequences.

Tips for time management in college

Julie holkovic shares her advice for managing time as a busy college student.

One challenge that many students face when transitioning to a college schedule and course load is how to manage their time.  This is especially important in engineering since students, aside from after their first year, do not get summers off due to the co-op schedule.

University of Cincinnati civil engineering student Julie Holkovic provides helpful time management tips that she has learned through her five years at the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Julie Holkovic

Civil Engineering

[email protected]

University of Cincinnati civil engineering student, College of Engineering and Applied Science Ambassador, and member of Chi Omega sorority.

Time management is something that is so critical as an engineering student with the course load because it is necessary to have free time to unwind. Through my time at UC, I have been able to keep great grades while also being on the executive board of a sorority, being involved in a student organization and spending lots of time with friends.

Stay organized

Julie Holkovic was an executive board member of her sorority, a CEAS ambassador, and more during her time at UC. Photo/provided

The biggest piece of advice I have for time management is to keep track of everything in one place. Personally, I use my iPhone calendar for this, but Google calendar or different calendar apps are another option. I also utilize the Canvas to-do list on the mobile app. This feature lays out class assignments in chronological order by due date. This makes it easy to prioritize assignments and decide where to start when I sit down to do homework.

Along with keeping everything organized in a calendar, I also set aside a block of time for homework at least twice a week and find it very helpful. For me, I always do homework on Sundays and another day throughout the week depending on my schedule each semester. When I get overwhelmed, it is much easier to take homework one step at a time, beginning with what is due the soonest and going from there.

Having time to yourself is important. Keeping a calendar is helpful to give yourself more free time because it allows you to plan out your weeks in advance so you know when you need to set aside homework time. I also find it helpful to do assignments whenever I have a bit of free time because it allows me to keep my homework load at a minimum.

Utilize organizational tools

The biggest improvement in my time management recently has been getting an iPad. The reason this helped me is because everything I need for my classes is in one place. For instance, I take notes on my iPad, do homework on my iPad, and store class files on my iPad. Having everything in one place like this makes both homework and studying easier because it is all together and ensures I will not lose anything.

If you have an iPad, I love the note-taking app, Notability. If you do not have an iPad, that is no big deal. The main thing is to keep your assignments and schedule organized so you know where everything is and you can access it easily. How you choose to do that (whether it be an iPad, Google Calendar, a written planner) does not matter.

Go to class

My final piece of advice is to always go to class. If you skip class, it will take you so much longer to try to teach yourself what you missed instead of learning from your professors. If you spend one hour in class learning the material, it will save you time in the long run. Odds are, it will take you much longer to try and teach it to yourself. The most important aspects of time management improvement are organization, writing down a schedule, and keeping track of your homework. I wish you all the best of luck and go Bearcats!
