As many areas in America are rapidly losing funding for technological advances in education, we as educators have to be innovative. The Republic of Macedonia is utilizing Edubuntu in all primary and secondary schools for a program titled Computer for Every Child which started in 2008. Open Source Software (OSS) could be the answer in providing lower socio economic schools a competitive edge to continue to compete for a technological standpoint. OSS is software developed in a collaborative and public environment. OSS is freely available software that is generally under the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL). With this license there is never a charge however any modifications must follow the associated license with the software. This research is to provide an alternative solution to resource limited schools and ensure the competitiveness of American children as our society becomes more global.

The Management Information Systems (MIS) degree has evolved over the years however it has yet another evolution to occur in its curriculum. Institutions need to create programs that address global issues such as Open Source Software (OSS), globalization, emerging media, virtualization, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. The MIS degree has been thought of as a managerial degree within technology. For the MIS degree to be successful a better blend on management and technical skill competency needs to occur. Currently the view within various communities is that the MIS does not provide enough technical capabilities to go beyond that of an analyst. Thus the goal is to create a curriculum that allows a graduate to become a manager or grow into a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) in their chosen specialization. The core courses shall be in specific advance areas of science, technology, and management science courses rather than a blend of everything. The specialization courses shall represent current trends for industry needs and those not yet present which allow the university to quickly adapt needed changes into degree curriculum.

This case assesses a company’s product line mix relative to two marketing environmental factors and explores four product line growth strategies using a product portfolio analysis approach. The case provides a history of the Apple Computer Company and its key product lines. An approach to analyzing a company’s product portfolio is reviewed and applied to Apple’s product lines. The case shows how each Apple product line fits within the portfolio analysis tool and will be asked questions relative to possible strategies for Apple’s product portfolio. The case illustrates one approach to making decisions about a company’s line of products. The case also stimulates critical thinking in regards to the future direction of a company’s product portfolio.

Transparency is a crucial factor in considering investment in the real estate market, thus its absence in a property market is seen by some researchers in the field as related to corruption in the property market, thus low transparency or opacity being synonymous to corruption, without empirical proof. This study therefore, tested the relationship between the real estate market transparency and individual country’s level of corruption and population size using indexes from two independent global rating bodies, the Jones Lang LaSalle’s Global Real Estate Transparency Index (GRETI) and the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 96 countries for an average of 6 years in order to determine whether the assertion is true. The study adopted the Pearson Correlation to justify the assertion that a nation’s transparency index is dependent on its corruption level vis-à-vis population density. It was found out that there is a strong correlation between the level of corruption in a nation and its transparency level giving a 0.740 correlation coefficient at 1% significance level, while there was no significant relationship between a country’s population density and its transparency level and corruption on the other hand. In conclusion, the study adopted Regression to develop an equation that could predict a markets transparency level given its corruption index. This study has statistically proven that there exists a correlation between transparency and corruption using an aggregate of at least 6 years for each of the market studied. The study concludes that the Transparency International’s CPI can be used to determine a yearly transparency level of a nations’ property market, rather than waiting for GRETI’s index which is publishable once in two years. The study recommends that, in order to achieve a more transparent market, it is paramount for low transparent and opaque nations to fight against corruption.

An interdisciplinary team of academics and representatives of fishing fleets and government collaborated to study the emerging requirements for sustainability in Canada's fisheries. Fisheries assessment and management has focused on biological productivity with insufficient consideration of social (including cultural), economic, and institutional (governance) aspects. Further, there has been little discussion or formal evaluation of the effectiveness of fisheries management. The team of over 50 people (i) identified a comprehensive set of management objectives for a sustainable fishery system based on Canadian policy statements, (ii) combined objectives into an operational framework with relevant performance indicators for use in management planning, and (iii) undertook case studies that investigated some social, economic, and governance aspects in greater detail. The resulting framework extends the suite of widely accepted ecological aspects (productivity and trophic structure, biodiversity, and habitat-ecosystem integrity) to include comparable economic (viability and prosperity, sustainable livelihoods, distribution of access and benefits, regional-community benefits), social (health and well-being, sustainable communities, ethical fisheries), and institutional (legal obligations, good governance structure, effective decision-making) aspects of sustainability. This work provides a practical framework for implementation of a comprehensive approach to sustainability in Canadian fisheries. The project also demonstrates the value of co-construction of collaborative research and co-production of knowledge that combines and builds on the strengths of academics, industry, and government.

The goal of this paper is to critique European integration noting political psychological dynamics relative to current policy trends that shape the EU’s effectiveness as a peace strategy. EU capabilities for conflict prevention include opportunities it offers to procure national security and prosperity for established states. The EU enjoys an advantage in competition with Moscow for influence in southeastern Europe. The EU is a multinational political entity that effectively projects an image of not being under the national dominance of a particular member state, i.e. Germany. The EU’s institutional policy-making complexity and authority dispersion suppress perceptual patterns suspecting it as a vehicle for neo-colonial projection of the power of a member state or coalition of states. The EU’s conditionality for loans to address the sovereign debt crisis is thus less prone to be seen as erasing the national sovereignty of a debtor state through capitulation to particular national dominance. A challenge lies in the EU’s perceived relationship with the US. Moscow’s prevailing view of the EU assumes it to be a vehicle for expansion of Euro-Atlantic influence at the expense of Russian national security. It intensifies suspicion of pro-Euro-Atlantic nationalities existing also as national minorities and in diaspora in Europe and in North America. The EU’s emphasis on state building and stabilization through economic development is problematic because of resistance to sovereign national self-determination for these national minorities.

One common and essential characteristic of a project, is that it is a temporary endeavor, to achieve certain outcomes (deliverables) and to help achieve organizational/stakeholders’ objectives, with defined beginning and end. Methodologies applied in projects, tends to directly influence the efficiency and effectiveness of project outcomes. Consequently, affecting the cost, quality, scope, time and outcomes. Mistakes happens regardless of the methodology applied. The first rule in project management is that “Nothing goes as you plan” (Firend, Al. R., 2019). Methodology is defined as “strictly defined combination of logically related practices, methods, and processes that determine how best to plan, develop, control and deliver a project throughout the continuous implementation processes until successful completion and termination.” (MyManagementGuide). There are numerous definitions of methodology in project management. However, there is a shared fundamental principle across all definitions. That is, methodology in project management helps project managers direct the project, and keep it in track. Methodology help organizations to achieve outcomes that aligned with strategic objectives. This is especially true when considering that projects are expensive, changing and time consuming in nature. All projects have three main components that a Project Manager (PM) constantly struggle with; cost, time, and quality. Various approaches to project methodology are the means of organizing and directing projects. These components are limitations that shape projects in the form of outcomes, deadlines and resources. As such, choosing the right methodology help achieve desired objectives and set outcomes in a most efficient and effective manner. There are six common types of project management methodologies. Each part will be discussed with explanation of its sub-parts. This body of work is written while working in California’s Silicon Valley as project manager, and teaching project management to MBA students. The intent of this work is to clarify the various methodologies applied in project management and simply these concepts to those learning project management, and to those studying it. A study on critical success factors has been included at the end of this book to illustrate the importance of culture and the role cultural values play in defining project successes and failures for the benefit of the reader.
