  • Meeting 1 - Eating Disorders and OCD: Part 1 (4/26/24)
  • Meeting 2 - Eating Disorders and OCD: Part 2 (5/3/24)
  • Eating disorders and OCD are two extremely complicated illnesses and their symptoms often overlap. This two-part, lecture-based training will contain a comprehensive understanding of the overlap, and serve as mandatory “introductory workshops” for this certificate series. Participants will learn a broader understanding of the complexities in treating OCD co-occurring with eating disorders. Participants will also have a greater understanding of how to treat eating disorder symptoms, and identify important elements in a comprehensive treatment plan. Exposure therapy and desensitization will be discussed. Breakout discussion rooms, interactive exercises, role playing, and case material will be used to further increase learning. Please note: Attendance for the first two sessions (Eating Disorders and OCD Parts 1 and 2) will be required to complete the certificate program.
  • Meeting 3 - Orthorexia (5/17/24)
  • Orthorexia was defined in 1998, and means an obsession with proper or healthy eating. While it is not a DSM 5 diagnosed illness, in the last 5 years, the symptoms of orthorexia have surged and can have dangerous side effects. It is critical for clinicians to understand the complications of this disorder. In this course we will define what Orthorexia is and why it is such a complex disorder. Using lecture, case illustrations, video clips, role play and small group discussions we will look at the differences between orthorexia and other eating disorders and discuss treatment strategies.
  • Meeting 4 - Intuitive Eating (5/31/24)
  • Recently there has been an abundance of information on intuitive and mindful eating. The two are different and the learning process is challenging. Intuitive eating is a multi-layered practice that can only be successful if a detailed inquiry of an individual's "food story" is understood by the practitioner. This course will examine the process and participants will learn how to conduct a detailed food history with their clients as well as learn other useful skills. We will also explore the reasons why the development of intuitive eating is so challenging, and illustrate it using detailed case examples. This workshop will include lecture, interactive exercises on mindful eating, video clips and discussion.
  • Meeting 5 - Intergenerational Food Trauma (6/14/24)
  • Taking the time to understand the depth of historical traumas that have involved significant food and eating issues in the generations in a family provides critical information for the treatment of eating disorders. Conducting a detailed food inquiry and exploration of the food story through generations critically impacts treatment goals. This course will address sensitive topics such as genocide and long-term cultural/religious/family food behaviors resulting from surviving these traumatic events. In this workshop you will learn how to gather all the food history, important cultural information, and prepare realistic treatment goals.

ACE: Approved Continuing Education

ACE approval demonstrates that a provider or course has been rigorously reviewed and found to offer quality continuing education according to best practices.

ASWB’s Approved Continuing Education program has been designed to review and approve high-quality CE providers and courses, whether they are delivered in person or via distance learning. This approval means that social work continuing education programs are generally acceptable to social work regulatory boards across the United States and Canada.

Ace standards.

Regardless of whether a CE provider pursues individual course approval or provider approval, programs must adhere to the ACE standards outlined in the ACE Handbook.

States and provinces that accept ACE

The ASWB Approved Continuing Education program approves continuing education providers and individual programs. When social workers choose courses created and offered by ACE providers or individual courses approved by ACE, they can trust they will receive high-quality content accepted by most U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions to meet licensure renewal requirements.

Three ways to find social work CE credit

  • ACE providers Download a list of all approved ACE providers
  • Individual course and conference approval Approved individual courses and conferences are listed on our spreadsheet
  • Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education ASWB authorizes some Joint Accreditation providers to offer ACE credit to social workers

ACE individual course/conference approval

Individual course/conference approval evaluates individual courses and conference sessions and approves them for licensees to earn continuing education credit.

ACE provider approval

ACE provider approval is optimal for CE providers that offer a large number of courses or programs.

Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education

ACE collaborates with Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education for CE in multiple professions.

General Information Definitions of Social Work Practice Eligibility Requirements Social Workers from Out-of-State Licensing Exams Certified Social Worker Licensed Social Worker Licensed Clinical Social Worker Clinical Supervision Continuing Education Requirements Students and Recent Graduates

General Information

What is social work licensure and certification, who must be licensed or certified to practice social work in new jersey.

  • Students enrolled in a program accredited (or in candidacy) by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), as long as the students are in a supervised course of study and are designated by the title "social work intern.”
  • Social workers in a non-profit organization who perform any social work service other than psychotherapeutic counseling;
  • School Social Workers, certified by the NJ Department of Education, but only when performing services on behalf of a local school district to students for whom the school district is responsible to provide services.
  • Civil service employees of the state, county, or local government. REVIEW: NJ Social Work Statutes (N.J.S.A. 45:15BB, subsection 5) for more information.
  • Once you graduate, you must have your NJ social work license or certification number, issued by the BSWE on their Web site (http://tinyurl.com/NJLicenseVerify), to work as a social worker unless you work in an exempt setting (see above).
  • If you want to provide clinical social work (psychotherapeutic counseling), you must have a license in order to practice as an LCSW, or as an LSW under the supervision of an LCSW who meets the supervision requirements, unless you work in an exempt setting (see above).
  • If you work in a for-profit organization - even if you are working under a government contract - you must be licensed or certified in order to practice social work.
  • If you are a social worker providing Drug and Alcohol counseling, you must have an LSW or an LCSW, or have a credential from the Alcohol & Drug Counseling Committee (CADC/LCADC).

How long is my license/certification valid?

What are my responsibilities as a licensee, what is the best way for me to contact the bswe, is a background check/fingerprinting required for my license/certification.

  • Even if you have been fingerprinted for another government agency such as the new jersey department of human services, or a law enforcement agency, you will have to be fingerprinted again. Prior fingerprinting will not be accessible to the bswe unless it was done for the Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) for licensing purposes.
  • If you need to be fingerprinted, you will have to pay the fingerprinting fee. If you were previously fingerprinted for DCA, then you will need to pay a rescanning fee (which is less) instead of the full fingerprinting fee.
  • School social workers (those credentialed by the NJ Department of Education- DoE) must be fingerprinted as the doe does not share fingerprint information with the DCA.

I have recently moved. Do i have to update the board with my new address?

I recently changed my last name. how can i update my license.

  • Legal evidence of this change; and
  • A copy of your original license or certificate with proof that you are the same person to whom the BSWE issued the license or certificate.

Upon receipt of the items, the BSWE shall issue you a new license or certificate.

Social Workers from Out-of-State

Does nj accept out of state licenses.

No, there is no reciprocity between NJ and other states. You will have to apply and become licensed in NJ to practice social work in this state. If you meet the following criteria, it will help you determine whether you might be eligible for licensure in NJ based on your active out-of-state license.

  • If you are currently licensed in good standing in another state;
  • If have practiced social work there within the last 5 years;
  • If your state’s requirements meet or exceed those of NJ; and
  • If you have taken and passed the ASWB exam

Which NJ license should I apply for?

NJ has three certification/licensing levels:

  • Certified Social Worker (CSW) - Bachelor of Social Work;
  • Licensed Social Worker (LSW) - Master of Social Work;
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) - Master of Social Work and at least 2 years of clinical social work experience under appropriate supervision.

Please determine the NJ license level equivalent to your current license from another state. You can get more information and access the appropriate application on the BSWE Web site .

In addition, you must have taken and passed the ASWB exam to be eligible for an LSW or LCSW in NJ.

ASWB Exams:

  • Masters (LSW Exam): A generalist test for social workers with an MSW and limited or no post-degree experience.
  • Clinical (LCSW Exam): A more advanced test for social workers with an MSW and at least two years of post-degree experience in direct clinical practice settings under appropriate supervision.

Complete the application and include ALL information required. Be sure to include a current resume and copy of your license from the other state.

Do I have to take the licensing exam if I did not pass or if my state’s requirements did not require it?

Will my supervision from the state where i currently live count toward my lcsw.

The BSWE will evaluate your application including your supervisor’s qualifications and make that determination on a case-by-case basis. The Board will often approve a supervisor who is a licensed mental health professional qualified to supervise social workers in that state as long as she/he can document licensure and at least 3 years of practice as a licensed clinical professional prior to the beginning of supervision. The BSWE prefers supervision by an LCSW but does approve other mental health professionals if the other state allows them to supervise social workers.
