Essay on Animals: How to Write a Persuasive Paper

  • Shelter and Rescue Work
  • spay and neuter

This girl (with help from her two black cats) is writing an essay on animals for school.

When writing a persuasive paper, your purpose is to convince your audience to agree with your idea or accept your recommendation for a course of action. If you’ve decided to write an essay on animals (either for a school assignment or for another purpose), here are the steps to follow.

1. Choose a topic

Some sample topics for an essay on animals include:

  • Everyone should spay or neuter their pets .
  • Adoption is the best option.
  • Dogs should be treated as individuals, not discriminated against because of breed.
  • Microchipping is important to keep pets with their families.

2. Research information on the topic

You can do research online and at the library, plus talk to experts in the field, to get more information. While reviewing the materials, look for interesting facts or tidbits that will hook your readers.

3. Create a flow chart

4. write the thesis statement for your paper.

Now it's time to fill in the flow chart, first with your thesis statement. For example: "Everyone should spay or neuter their pets." This statement will go in the first box in your flow chart. The flow chart is a visual way to help you create an outline. An outline will help you organize the information in a logical order. Your finished product will have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

5. Write the reasons and supporting data

The body will contain the reasons and the supporting data listed on your flow chart. The body not only contains evidence to support your opinion but also addresses one or two opposing views.

Be sure to include your counter-argument when stating the opposing view. For example, one opposing view to the above statement might be this: "Many people think that an animal who has been spayed or neutered will become lazy and fat." Your counter-argument could be this: "This is a misconception. The main reason pets become overweight is lack of exercise and overfeeding."

6. Note engaging facts

Keep the flow chart handy as you read through all the information you have gathered. In a separate place, write “Hooks and facts to grab the reader’s attention,” and as you review your material, jot down cool facts that you come across. For example: "Just one female cat and her offspring can produce an estimated 420,000 cats in only seven years."

7. Consider all angles

Be sure to address a wide variety of reasons to support your topic statement. For example: Think about pet overpopulation, overcrowded shelters, the costs to your city or town, the effects on pet health, and pet behavior. What would your audience find most important?

8. Expand each reason individually

Before writing your actual paper, keep your facts straight by writing each reason and the supporting evidence on separate sheets of paper or documents.

9. Write your essay

Write your first draft. Then, revise your outline and draft as needed until you have your final draft. If necessary, include a bibliography.

50 simple actions you can take to help animals

Written by Lizzie Daly, wildlife biologist, explorer, and presenter

Nature needs us now more than ever.

Across the globe, wildlife is in crisis. The problems we’re confronted with are urgent and complicated: climate change, the biodiversity crisis, habitat loss, disrupted ecosystems, and dwindling species.

What we need to see now is a global, collaborative effort—a rallying cry to protect and restore nature, with animals and people at its heart. Every action you take, be it big or small, contributes to a brighter future. I know that you, like me, want to play your part.

The new Actions for Animals guide features a list of 50 simple actions that anyone can perform to help animals survive and thrive, and to foster peaceful coexistence between animals and people. The actions draw on expertise within IFAW and dedicated individuals within the global conservation and animal welfare community.

Here’s a sneak peek of a few of the actions you’ll find in the guide.

1.      Rewild your garden

By allowing even a small section of your garden to return to its wild side, you’ll be actively creating a whole new ecosystem by simply letting it grow.   Initiatives like Plantlife’s ‘ No Mow May ’ highlight the importance of making space for nature to thrive in our gardens. By keeping part of your garden wild, pollinators will soon set up camp. Wildflowers provide a feast for pollinators, tackle pollution, and lock away atmospheric carbon below ground.

2.      Clean your bird feeders

Nature needs help with the washing up too—especially during the summer months, when risk of infection is far higher among birds . Keep an eye on feed levels, and when topping up, be sure to empty and clean thoroughly (taking appropriate personal hygiene precautions) before refilling.    It’s also recommended that you move your feeder each month to avoid an accumulation of droppings.

3.      Join a community beach clean

Litter from all over the world can wash up on our beaches, making this a truly global action.    Every year, Surfers Against Sewage host their Million Mile Clean, which brings local communities together to tackle plastic pollution head-on. With the obvious benefits of doing your part for nature, you also have the chance to breathe in some fresh sea air whilst making new friends in your community.

4.      Be a responsible tourist

According to The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), ecotourism can be defined as ‘responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education’.

When booking your next adventure, make sure you do your research into what activities will support local businesses and the community as well as animals. Don’t ride elephants, swim with captive dolphins, or pose with a chained primate .

5.      Support our vital work

By donating to IFAW , you’re actively supporting our tireless work to create a better future for people and animals.

25 Actions to Help Animals and HSI

Get involved, make a difference.

Humane Society International / Global

All of us can make a difference for animals in our everyday lives, whether it’s by adopting a pet, choosing products not tested on animals, eating with conscience or engaging the community in animal protection issues.

With so many widespread problems facing animals, it takes our collective efforts to confront cruelty and change things for the better.

Here are 25 ideas for ways you can help animals locally and around the world.

Get involved in your community

  • Write letters to the editor on animal protection issues and encourage radio and television talk shows to cover these topics ( hsi.org is a great resource for information).
  • Approach your place of worship about engaging in animal protection issues.
  • Help community cats in your neighborhood with the HSUS’s Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) resources .
  • Ask your local restaurants and grocery stores to switch to cage-free eggs .
  • Take a stand against puppy mills and encourage local stores that sell live animals to stop. Ask pet stores to work with animal welfare organizations to promote animals available for adoption.
  • Promote Meatless Mondays  in your school, workplace cafeteria, or in your favorite restaurant. It’s a campaign that’s good for animals, the environment, and our health.

Help animals in your everyday life

  • Educate yourself by signing up for email action alerts and news from HSI. Share emails with friends.
  • “Like” HSI on Facebook and follow us on Twitter , Instagram and LinkedIn .
  • Eat with conscience . Practice the 3 Rs of eating. Reduce your consumption of meat and other animal-based foods, refine your diet by avoiding animal products derived from factory farming, and replace meat and other animal-based foods with plant-based options.
  • Add an HSI video to your website, blog, or social networking page.
  • Adopt a friend for life from a local animal shelter or foster an animal waiting for a permanent home. Search the World Federation for Animals directory and choose “Pet Adoption” under “Select Focus or Activity.” If you live in the U.S., search Petfinder .
  • Be a responsible pet owner. Have your pet spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted births. Put a collar and visible identification on your dogs and cats and encourage others to do the same. And keep your cats safe indoors .
  • Pledge to be cruelty-free and only purchase cosmetics that are certified to be non-animal-tested.

  • Prepare a disaster kit for you and your animals.
  • Avoid supporting cruelty as “entertainment.” Do not attend bullfights , bull fiestas, or marine mammal shows .
  • Make compassionate purchasing decisions while traveling and at home with the help of our Don’t Buy Wild guide .
  • Ask restaurants that serve shark fin soup to stop.
  • Make a personal annual gift to HSI or sign up for an automatic monthly pledge using your credit card.
  • Share this list with family members and friends so they can learn how their actions can help animals, too.

Participate in training events

  • Attend The HSUS/HSI’s Animal Care Expo or The HSUS’s Taking Action for Animals conference .

Volunteer for animals

  • Offer your time and skills to your local animal welfare/protection organization. A useful resource is the World Federation for Animals directory . Do make sure you are comfortable with the positions and actions of any group you volunteer for. You can also volunteer ”virtually” for groups anywhere in the world!!
  • Some ways you may be able to help animal protection organizations: fundraise , manage their website or social media presence, design and produce flyers and/or advertisements, set up a community education booth, or take photographs  of animals available for adoption.

Reach out to youth and schools

  • Teach children and teens to respect animals with humane education activities .
  • Give talks at local schools about factory farming and how students can help animals at every meal by avoiding factory farmed products, and by choosing cage-free eggs and plant-based foods. Encourage them to ask their cafeterias to go cage-free  and to adopt Meatless Monday .

Embracing Hope: the Compassionate World of Animal Shelters

This essay about animal sanctuaries portrays them as havens of hope and compassion for stray and mistreated animals. Going beyond physical shelters, these places embody a collective commitment to alleviating the suffering of vulnerable beings. The stories within these sanctuaries, from stray dogs seeking refuge to animals recovering from abuse, illustrate the transformative impact of these establishments. The unsung heroes running the shelters navigate emotional complexities with dedication, fostering connections between animals and potential adopters. These shelters also serve as crucial hubs for education, dispelling myths and promoting responsible pet ownership. Despite challenges like limited resources, shelters persevere, guided by the belief that every life saved is a triumph. The no-kill movement reflects evolving ethical standards, emphasizing a compassionate approach. Animal shelters, as crucibles of compassion and transformation, create a brighter future where kindness transcends species boundaries. You can also find more related free essay samples at PapersOwl about Animal shelter.

How it works

In the realm of empathy and nurturing, animal sanctuaries emerge as havens for our furry friends, bridging the gap between despair and hope. These refuges play a crucial role in addressing the challenges faced by stray, abandoned, or mistreated animals, providing them with an opportunity for a new life filled with love and care.

Beyond being mere physical structures, animal shelters embody a collective commitment to alleviating the suffering of vulnerable beings. In the intricate dance of human-animal interactions, these shelters become symbols of compassion, championing the belief that every life, regardless of its past, possesses intrinsic value.

At the core of each animal shelter lies a tapestry of poignant stories. Stray dogs seeking refuge from harsh streets, abandoned kittens in search of solace, and animals on the road to recovery from abuse or neglect – their narratives intertwine within the shelter’s walls. These establishments serve as temporary homes, offering not just shelter but also medical care, nourishment, and, most importantly, a second chance at companionship.

The individuals running these shelters are unsung heroes, navigating the emotional complexities of their work with unwavering dedication. They are the compassionate souls who mend broken spirits, rehabilitate wounded bodies, and facilitate connections between animals and potential adopters. Their commitment transcends daily routines; it’s a testament to the profound impact that human kindness can have on the lives of voiceless creatures.

Animal shelters serve as vital centers for education and advocacy, dispelling myths about certain breeds, promoting responsible pet ownership, and stressing the importance of spaying or neutering to control the escalating population of homeless animals. Through outreach programs and community engagement, these shelters become catalysts for change, fostering a culture of empathy and respect for all living beings.

The adoption process at an animal shelter unfolds as a transformative journey. Prospective pet parents enter a realm where connections are forged through shared glances, playful interactions, and the unspoken language of companionship. It’s a delicate dance where humans seek not just a pet but a lifelong friend, and animals yearn for a place where trust can be rebuilt.

Beyond adoption, animal shelters often form invaluable partnerships with local schools, community groups, and businesses. These collaborations aim to instill a sense of responsibility and empathy in the younger generation, shaping a future where the welfare of animals is regarded as a shared societal responsibility.

Challenges persist in the world of animal shelters – limited resources, overcrowding, and a constant influx of animals in need create an ongoing struggle. The financial burden of medical care, food, and shelter maintenance can be overwhelming. Yet, despite these challenges, shelters persevere, fueled by an unwavering belief that every life saved is a triumph against cruelty and neglect.

In recent times, the concept of a “no-kill” shelter has gained prominence, emphasizing alternatives to euthanasia. These shelters prioritize increased adoption efforts, extensive community outreach, and medical interventions to address behavioral issues. The no-kill movement reflects evolving ethical standards in animal welfare, advocating for a compassionate and life-affirming approach.

The impact of animal shelters extends beyond their physical structures, resonating through communities and fostering a more humane and empathetic society. Success stories of animals finding forever homes inspire others to consider adoption, reinforcing the idea that each adoption is a small victory in the grand tapestry of animal welfare.

In conclusion, animal shelters stand as crucibles of compassion, resilience, and transformation. They represent a shared commitment to alleviate the suffering of sentient beings, fostering a culture where kindness transcends species boundaries. Within the shelter’s embrace, animals discover not just shelter but hope, and humans find immeasurable joy in offering a second chance. These shelters are a living testament to the belief that, in a world marked by challenges, the beacon of compassion can illuminate even the darkest corners, creating a brighter future for all beings.

How can we help homeless animals?

' src=

Published On - November 19, 2019

A sad white dog

Every year, millions of animals end up in shelters all across the globe. These animals are either rescued from the streets or dropped off at the shelter. Though a lot of these shelters provide outstanding care and attention, there are still limitations to what they can do.

As an individual, you can contribute to these efforts in a lot of different ways. Running a shelter involves a ton of work and they will need all the help they can get. Offering even a small donation or volunteering a short amount of your time can make a huge difference.

Why we should help animals?

How can we help save animals, what can i do for stray dogs, what can i do for stray cats, what can i do for other stray animals right now, how you can help animals right now.

A sad white dog

Animals, whether we are aware or not, play a huge role in our lives and in the environment. Therefore, it’s in our best interest to help them however we can.

Altruism aside, there are quite a few key reasons we should care for them. One reason is to prevent the spread of disease.

essay on how to help animals

Diseases, such as rabies, pose a huge threat to humans. The disease is fatal to humans, as well as to the animals who carry it. Infected animals become aggressive and bite without provocation.

Rescuing animals helps prevent the spread of rabies by reducing the population of potential carriers in the wild. This reduces the chance of infected animals harming other people and animals in the community.

The best and most effective way to help homeless animals is to raise awareness in the community.

Talking to people in the community can bring about the changes that will dramatically improve the welfare of these animals.

Spay and neuter your own pets, if you have them, and tell your friends to spay and neuter their pets. Spaying and neutering help control the population of strays in the community.

essay on how to help animals

Advocate for adopting pets instead of shopping. There are a lot of pets in shelters today that are eager to find their forever homes. Adopting helps improve their lives and allows shelters to accommodate more pets that need their help. Some shelters even give you a starter kit of blankets, toys, and other things you may need to care for your new pet.

You can also consider donating your time and skills to your local centers. Volunteering to help out in the shelter for a few hours a week will surely be appreciated by the staff. If you have other skills such as carpentry, accounting, or graphic design, you can offer your services to the shelter. You can help build things for the animals, balance the shelter’s books, or design advertisements and print ads for the shelter.

If you see a stray dog in your area, you can help them, but you should do so with caution.

essay on how to help animals

Never approach stray dogs, especially if they look scared. You may have the best intentions, but they don’t know that and could bite if you get too close. Instead, call your local animal control or animal rescue center for assistance.

Stray dogs are easily spooked and can become aggressive when cornered. It is best to let the experts handle the situation for the safety of the dog and everyone involved. Once in custody, the dogs will be tested for various diseases and their overall health is checked.

Just like dogs, stray and feral cats can be very aggressive when approached.

essay on how to help animals

For you and the cat’s safety, it is best to call for professionals to deal with the situation. Until proper testing is done, one can’t be sure if the animal is free from diseases like rabies which pose a serious threat to humans.

Once in custody, you can help the cat by visiting them often once. Donating some supplies such as blankets and a litter box would be a great way to help as well.

Once fully recovered and tested for any diseases, fostering cats until they find a forever home is a possibility. Who knows, you might find a furry friend that you’d like to adopt yourself!

Become a Sponsor

Caring for so many animals is resource-intensive. This can easily put strain on a shelter’s very limited budget. You can help by directly donating funds to the shelter as a sponsor. Another way is to organize fundraiser events like fun runs or walk-a-thons for your cause. Getting the whole community involved not only helps in reaching the monetary goal but also helps to create awareness for animals in need that leads to helping more animals in the future.

Volunteering in rescue centers is a proactive way to make a huge impact on the animals. Caring for animals is a challenging task and any help would be very much welcome. Talk to these shelters and see if they are accepting volunteers. Even just a couple of hours every week can provide a shelter with the assistance they need.

Donating funds and supplies to animal shelters is also one of the best things you can do for animals in the shelter. Old blankets, toys, and other supplies can greatly help the shelters to save what limited resources they have. Ask your family and friends to participate in a donation drive for the benefit of your local shelter.

Foster homeless animals

Fostering is an effective way to help homeless pets in shelters. By fostering, you help rehabilitate pets and teach them how to live with humans. Elderly and special needs pets need more intensive care due to their condition. The shelters may not be able to provide the care they need in-house and fostering is a great way to accommodate those special needs. This also helps the shelter because they can channel their limited resources to the animals that need the most care.

Helping animals in need is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Even the smallest things can have significant effects on the lives of animals in the shelter. If you are not able to volunteer or foster, you can still help. You make a huge impact when you donate to save animals . The funds will be used to buy supplies like food and medicine, and to improve the shelter’s facilities. Remember, every little bit counts.

Animal rescue is a much-needed social service that helps protect animals from dangerous situations that often involve cruelty and abuse. Many animals are turned into shelters due to evictions, expensive health concerns, or other unavoidable circumstances. Often it is easy to villainize the people who surrender their animals, but as animal advocates, we must keep in mind that oftentimes people are surrendering as they believe it is best for the animal or they’ve tried everything else.

What Is Animal Rescue?

What is the difference between an animal rescue and an animal shelter .

The differences between animal shelters and animal rescues can be difficult to nail down. This is because there is a great level of ambiguity and flexibility surrounding the two terms. Some places that interpret the term “animal rescue” broadly might even house animal shelters as a subset of animal rescues. If there were to be a key difference it would be that generally speaking, animal shelters tend to have facilities that house animals whereas animal rescues are typically foster-based organizations. This does not mean, however, that animal shelters do not have fosters, as many do. Many animal rescues also partner with boarding facilities to house their animals adding to the ambiguity between the two. Regardless of what they call themselves, both types of organizations have a common goal: they exist to help animals.

Which Animals Suffer the Most?

There are farm sanctuaries that focus on helping rescued farmed animals and allowing them to live out their lives in peace. There are municipal shelters that handle cruelty seizures and help to rehome dogs and cats. If there is an animal in need, there is likely an organization that has stepped up to help, this is especially true of the species that are most frequently in need.

Every year an estimated 3.1 million dogs enter shelters across the United States. Though this number is staggering it has fallen sharply from the estimated 3.9 million dogs that entered shelters in 2011. These dogs come as strays, owner surrenders, cruelty seizures to receive care and rehabilitation at shelters. Though there are many rescues that accept strays or owner surrenders, many also focus on pulling dogs from animal shelters in order to make space for additional intakes and continue the ongoing trend of reducing the number of dogs euthanized every year in shelters.

The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that 3.2 million cats enter animal shelters in the United States every year. Cats of all ages, conditions, and with a vast array of needs enter the shelter doors for staff to route to appropriate outcomes whether that be transfer to a facility or rescue better able to care for that animal’s needs, placing them up for adoption, or seeking a return to their owner.

Estimates of how many horses are in rescues in the United States range between 6,000 to 10,000. These horses are typically rehomed due to their health, behavioral issues, or a lack of suitability for their intended purpose.

Livestock and Poultry

Most farmed animals and poultry in shelters and rescues result either from people keeping chickens in their backyards or from factory farms . Livestock and poultry could end up being rehomed by a shelter or rescue or live out their lives at a sanctuary.

Like domesticated animals, wildlife often find themselves in need of rescue. Most wildlife that is rescued will be rehabilitated with the goal of eventual release back into the wild. The animals that can’t be released will either be humanely euthanized due to their condition or kept in captivity at a sanctuary, zoo, or another appropriate facility capable of providing adequate care.

How Does Animal Rescue Make a Difference?

The stories of rescued animals are never-ending. Recently, Leah Garcés, the president of Mercy for Animals, told the heartwarming story of her rescue chicken, Henrietta , and the bond the chicken formed with her daughter who taught the talented bird how to skateboard. Though not every animal learns a fantastic new skill following their rescue, the internet is filled with stories like Henrietta’s , of animals’ lives being changed and changing the lives of those who are lucky enough to rescue them.

Why Should You Help Animal Rescue and the Fight Against Animal Cruelty?

No living being deserves to be treated poorly.

As sentient beings , animals deserve to be treated fairly with consideration for both their physical and mental well-being. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen, so rescue is necessary to help restore well-being for animals that have been neglected, abused, or ignored by society.

Animals That Get Away Can Be Dangerous to Society

Animals can be extremely dangerous. This is not only due to their ability to cause physical harm through bites, scratches, and physical force but also because they can be disease vectors and transmit parasites, rabies, and other diseases to people and other animals.

Slaughtered Animals End Up on Plates

The farmed animals that are used to produce food endure unspeakable suffering and pain on factory farms . They are separated from their young merely hours after giving birth, frequently are not able to stand or walk normally either due to their unnatural size or cramped quarters, and are killed well before the end of their natural lifespan.

Ignoring the Problem Contributes to It

The problems of animal overpopulation, neglect, and abuse simply make it grow larger. In order to overcome these issues, they must be faced head-on in a manner that recognizes the sentience of both the animals and people involved in rescue situations.

Pet Overpopulation

Animal rescue and the emphasis placed on spaying and neutering have contributed to the decrease in pet overpopulation. When animals are well cared for and have their needs met, they are less likely to be breeding unintentionally than if they are allowed to wander on their own.

Poorly Bred Animals Suffer Serious Health Defects

The problems with puppy mills , essentially factory farms for dogs, and the puppies that they produce have been well documented. The dogs housed at these facilities often lack routine veterinary care and are kept in their own filth where it is impossible to avoid common infectious diseases and parasites. The puppies produced by these factories are more likely to have behavioral problems, specifically aggression, than puppies obtained from non-commercial breeders. These puppies are also likely to be sick or injured from the conditions in which they were bred.

What Are the Most Common Types Of Animal Abuse?

Slaughterhouses.

In the United States alone, excluding sea life and chickens, 165 million animals are slaughtered every year . The end-of-life experience for these animals is distressing with animals being handled roughly by overworked and underpaid employees. These animals are frequently still conscious when their moment of death comes due to failed stunning.

Animal Testing

Determining the exact number of animals that suffer as a result of animal testing for cosmetics and medicine is difficult due to poor record-keeping protocols, estimates place the number globally in the tens of millions. These animals are subjected to diseases they would not have naturally contracted, chemicals, and all manner of physical and mental manipulation. Many of these animals will be unable to be rehomed following their service to science and will meet an untimely death after their painful life.

Hunting and Fishing

Contrary to what many were raised to believe, fish likely can feel pain meaning that catch and release fishing does cause harm to the animals caught. Like fishing, hunting at large is an activity that causes a great amount of suffering to the animals involved. As has been the case with wolves in the Western United States , animals are often hunted because they are misunderstood or characterized as villainous.

Unfortunately, animals are tortured from time to time. To be considered torture, the act must be intentionally inflicted upon the animal. Though these instances of abuse may be more prevalent in the media due to their sensationalism, as animal advocates it is important to keep in mind that torture makes up the minority of cases when it comes to animal rescue.

Animal neglect can sometimes lead to starvation . This is especially true of animals that are contained and neglected, as they are helpless to obtain their own food. Long-term starvation can cause a myriad of other health issues including liver degeneration and anemia.

Puppy Mills

Puppy mills are essentially factory farms for dogs . They prioritize profit over the welfare of the animal and the person purchasing their new family member. Toward this end, dogs are often stacked in kennels one on top of the other, and bred repeatedly. They often also lack sufficient veterinary care and develop diseases as a result.

Cruel Training Methods

Animal training has come a long way due to an increase in knowledge surrounding positive reinforcement and the role it plays. Despite this, there are still cruel training methods employed both individually and professionally. When seeking out a trainer it is important to do your research in order to find someone who will treat both you and your pet well.

How to Rescue Animals

Adopt your next furry (or scaly or feathered) family member.

Next time you’re considering growing your family with something furry, scaly, or feathered check shelters and rescues in your area before considering other options. Adopt a Pet is a very useful website for finding rescues and the pets they have available.

Volunteer at Your Local Animal Shelter

Animal shelters everywhere are always looking for volunteers to work with the animals. Often they have several different roles to choose from. Perhaps you prefer to walk dogs or spend one on one time with cats or maybe you’re most excited by the idea of helping match animals with the perfect new family. Regardless of your interests, you’ll find a way to help out.

Donate to Animal Rescue Organizations

Donating supplies or money to an animal rescue organization is an awesome way to help make sure they can continue rescuing animals year after year.

Foster Animals Until They Find Forever Homes

Most animal rescues and shelters will have a foster program to help place animals in homes while they wait for their forever family. Even if you are only able to commit to short-term fostering, providing a much-needed break from the stress of the shelter environment can be just what an animal needs to get adopted.

Amplify Information About Shelter Animals

If you are active on social media or are able to spread information on shelter animals in other ways, consider sharing the profiles and pictures of the animals at your local shelter. This helps increase exposure for the animals and may result in an adoption.

Stop Consuming Animal Products

One of the best ways to cut down on farmed animal suffering is to stop consuming animal products. By choosing more plant-based options you are reducing the demand for animal suffering which reduces the number of animals enduring lives on factory farms.

Report Animal Abuse When You See It

If you suspect that you are witnessing, or have witnessed, animal abuse, reach out to your local animal shelter to discuss the situation and determine the next steps.

Keep Your Animals Safe

Keeping the animals that you share your space with happy and healthy is one important way to help with animal rescue. By ensuring your animals are well-loved and cared for you are leading by example and can make sure that you have a positive influence on those in your community.

Start an Animal Rescue Fundraiser

If you’re looking for a shorter-term but highly impactful way to make a difference and get involved in animal rescue, consider organizing a fundraiser. Whether fundraising money through a bake sale or supplies at work or school, the animals and rescue organizations will be grateful for your support.

What’s Next

Animal rescue organizations are as diverse as the animals and people they serve. Regardless of the species’ that they house, they all aim to make a difference for the better in the lives of animals in need. Farm sanctuaries house once distraught farmed animals in an environment that is stimulating and comfortable for them to spend their lives. Municipal shelters are loud and fast-paced with sometimes hundreds of animals housed there at one time, but amongst all the raucous are animals being loved and cared for until they are reunited with their families or matched with a new one. Despite these differences, all these organizations have people that love animals and have dedicated their lives to animal welfare working long hours. Next time you’re at an animal shelter or rescue take a moment to thank a staff member.

Pet Therapy: How Animals And Humans Heal Each Other

Julie Rovner

essay on how to help animals

Those of us who own pets know they make us happy. But a growing body of scientific research is showing that our pets can also make us healthy, or healthier.

That helps explain the increasing use of animals — dogs and cats mostly, but also birds, fish and even horses — in settings ranging from hospitals and nursing homes to schools, jails and mental institutions.

Take Viola, or Vi for short. The retired guide dog is the resident canine at the Children's Inn on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. The inn is where families stay when their children are undergoing experimental therapies at NIH.

Vi, a chunky yellow Labrador retriever with a perpetually wagging tail, greets families as they come downstairs in the morning and as they return from treatment in the afternoon. She can even be "checked out" for a walk around the bucolic NIH grounds.

"There really isn't a day when she doesn't brighten the spirits of a kid at the inn. And an adult. And a staff member," says Meredith Daly, the inn's spokeswoman.

But Vi may well be doing more than just bringing smiles to the faces of stressed-out parents and children. Dogs like Vi have helped launch an entirely new field of medical research over the past three decades or so.

The use of pets in medical settings actually dates back more than 150 years, says Aubrey Fine , a clinical psychologist and professor at California State Polytechnic University. "One could even look at Florence Nightingale recognizing that animals provided a level of social support in the institutional care of the mentally ill," says Fine, who has written several books on the human-animal bond.

But it was only in the late 1970s that researchers started to uncover the scientific underpinnings for that bond.

One of the earliest studies, published in 1980, found that heart attack patients who owned pets lived longer than those who didn't. Another early study found that petting one's own dog could reduce blood pressure.

More recently, says Rebecca Johnson, a nurse who heads the Research Center for Human/Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, studies have been focusing on the fact that interacting with animals can increase people's level of the hormone oxytocin .

"That is very beneficial for us," says Johnson. "Oxytocin helps us feel happy and trusting." Which, Johnson says, may be one of the ways that humans bond with their animals over time.

But Johnson says it may also have longer-term human health benefits. "Oxytocin has some powerful effects for us in the body's ability to be in a state of readiness to heal, and also to grow new cells, so it predisposes us to an environment in our own bodies where we can be healthier."

Animals can also act as therapists themselves or facilitate therapy — even when they're not dogs or cats.

For example, psychologist Fine, who works with troubled children, uses dogs in his practice — and also a cockatoo and even a bearded dragon named Tweedle.

"One of the things that's always been known is that the animals help a clinician go under the radar of a child's consciousness, because the child is much more at ease and seems to be much more willing to reveal," he says.

Horses have also become popular therapists for people with disabilities.

"The beauty of the horse is that it can be therapeutic in so many different ways," says Breeanna Bornhorst, executive director of the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program in Clifton, Va. "Some of our riders might benefit from the connection and the relationship-building with the horse and with their environment. Other riders maybe will benefit physically, from the movements, and build that core strength, and body awareness and muscle memory."

On a recent day, one of the therapeutic riding program's instructors — speech therapist Cathy Coleman — worked one on one with 9-year-old Ryan Shank-Rowe, who has autism.

Well, not really one on one. The co-therapist in this session was a speckled pony named Happy.

"Walk on" said Ryan, and Happy obediently did. "Excellent," Coleman replied.

As the session progressed, Ryan made Happy trot, weave in and out of poles, and he even rode bareback, all the while answering Coleman's questions and keeping up a continual back-and-forth chatter.

Coleman says she used to see Ryan in a more formal office environment. But since he started horseback riding, his speech has actually improved.

"I get greater engagement, greater alertness, more language, more processing, all those things," she says. "Plus, he's just really good at it."

And Ryan's mother, Donna Shank, says the riding has helped with more than just his speech.

"It's helped his following directions, some really core life skills about getting dressed and balance — which really translate to a lot of safety issues, too."

But not all the research is focused on the humans. "We want to know how the animals are benefiting from the exchange," says Johnson of the University of Missouri.

Much of Johnson's research, for example, has focused on the value of dog-walking by studying volunteers who walk dogs at animal shelters. She even wrote a book, Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound .

Those programs have clearly helped people get healthier, she says. Not only do they increase their exercise while they're walking the dogs, "but it increases their awareness, so that they exercise more during the week."

But it turns out the program was also helping the dogs.

"What we found was that they were significantly more likely to be adopted if they were in the dog-walking group," she says, thanks to the additional exercise and socialization they were getting.

Johnson is now working on a new project with likely benefits for dogs and humans. Military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are providing shelter dogs with basic obedience training.

And while it's still early in the research, she says, one thing seems pretty clear: "Helping the animals is helping the veterans to readjust to being at home."

Now the research is getting an even bigger scientific boost.

The National Institutes of Health, with funding from pet food giant Mars Inc. , recently created a federal research program to study human-animal interaction. The program, operated through the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, offers scientists research grants to study the impact of animals on child development, in physical and psychological therapeutic treatments, and on the effects of animals on public health, including their ability to reduce or prevent disease.

Johnson says it's critical to establish the scientific foundation for the premise that animals are good for people, even if that seems obvious.

"The last thing we want is for an entire field to be based on warm fuzzy feelings and not on scientific data," she says. "So it's very important that now the NIH is focused on this ... and it is helping scientists across the country like myself to be able to do our research."

Short essay on Kindness to Animals in 100 Words

All the living creatures on this planet have the right to live freely in nature. Today, however, many animals all over the world are suffering because of human cruelty. People don’t just kill animals for their meat but also their skins, tusks, horns, teeth, feathers and fur. Many animals are kept captive, tortured and made to perform in front of crowds of people.

Innocent lab animals are used all over the world to test newly developed chemical formulations. We should be kind to animals and all living creatures. We should never harm animals. Instead, we should feed them and take care of them whenever we can. After all, having compassion for others is what truly makes us human.

Short essay on Kindness to Animals in 200 Words

For thousands of years, human beings have hunted animals not just for food, but also for sports and fun. Many animals like elephants and horned rhinoceros have been killed for centuries for their tusks and horns. Animals like lions, tigers, monkeys and even dolphins are kept captive, tortured and made to perform in front of crowds of people.

The livestock animals kept in farms for their milk and meat live in such terrible conditions, unable to move freely. And of course, we can not forget the lab animals. Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice are used all over the world to test new chemical formulas developed for humans.

In our day to day life, we all have come across people throwing stones at street dogs or kicking them. Many people don’t even think twice before running their cars over street animals. We must ask ourselves if the innocent animals deserve our cruelty.

They don’t bother us and just want to live peacefully. We should become more kind and compassionate towards animals and all other living beings. We shouldn’t harm animals or let others harm them. We should feed and take care of helpless animals. After all, having compassion for others is what truly makes us human.

Short essay on Kindness to Animals in 400 Words

All living beings on this planet were created and given life by the same divine force. All of us, whether it is human beings, plants or animals, have the right to live and be free. In the olden days, most kings and emperors spent their free time going on hunts to kill animals like deer, tigers, lions and elephants. The hunted animals were not eaten but just served as a trophy for the king.

Many big animals like elephants and horned rhinoceros are still killed for their tusks, horns and skins. Marine animals like sharks and whales are also killed to be served as delicacies in several high-end restaurants. Over the years, the population of these animals has greatly decreased and many exotic species are on the verge of becoming extinct.

We don’t have to go far to see animals suffering because of human cruelty. It is not hard to notice how mistreated the street dogs are. People throw stones at them, kick them and some even run their cars over them. Many animals are kept captive and made to perform in circuses. The livestock animals kept in farms for their milk and meat live in such terrible conditions, unable to move freely.

Their babies are taken away from them and killed as the people running the farms don’t see any value in keeping them alive. Horses and bullocks kept for pulling carts and ploughs are often not fed properly and made to work until they collapse. If we take a look at the cosmetic industry, so many high-end brands test their products on innocent animals. Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice are all used to test new chemical formulas developed for beauty products. This greatly harms them.

Animals have every right to live freely in nature. Just because they cannot defend themselves, does not mean that we should keep torturing them for our gain. Kindness to animals and all other living creatures is a virtue. We should not harm animals and we should stop others from harming them as well. Many animals have lost their habitat and food sources because of deforestation and infrastructure developments done by human beings.

We should feed and take care of such animals instead of viewing them as a nuisance. Governments all over the world have taken various steps to stop illegal hunting and many organisations are trying their best to make life less cruel for farm and lab animals. But they can only do so much. It is on each one of us to become more compassionate and kind towards animals so that all living beings can live freely on this planet.

Homeless animals are usually left without a permanent residence when their owner gives them up or they’re found on the street. With millions of animals living in shelters every year, there aren’t enough people to take them in, so many animals don’t get the love and care that they need. If you’d like to help homeless animals, there are tons of ways you can spread awareness through your community and support your local shelters. If you have the time and the space, consider adopting a homeless animal for yourself to give them a permanent home.

Step 1 Set up a regular payment to a shelter/rescue group.

  • Most sites ask for donations as little as $5 to $10 per month, but you can decide how much you’d like to donate.

Step 2 Ask for birthday donations.

  • If you have a Facebook account, you can set up a fundraiser on your birthday that links directly to the shelter or rescue group’s website. Search for the shelter name on Facebook, then click “Share.” [3] X Research source

Step 3 Set up a workplace giving program.

  • You could put a donation box in your breakroom to collect cash donations from your fellow employees.
  • Or, send out an email with a little tidbit about the shelter or rescue group you’ve chosen with a link to donate.

Step 4 Sponsor a pet to donate money specifically to them.

  • You’ll also get updates on how that pet is doing and if/when they get adopted.

Step 5 Give supplies and food to a shelter or rescue group.

Step 1 Pack an emergency rescue kit for homeless animals.

  • You can donate rescue kits directly to your local shelter or rescue group.

Step 2 Sew blankets and pillows to keep animals comfortable.

  • You could even sew little bandanas or vests that say “Adopt Me!” for the animals.

Step 3 Mix up natural, pet-safe cleaners to donate to animal shelters.

  • Make a natural all-purpose cleaner by combining 2 cups (470 mL) of distilled water, 1  c (240 mL) of white vinegar, 10 drops of lemon essential oil, and 5 drops of thyme essential oil.
  • Mix up a natural laundry detergent with 7 L (30  c) of hot water, 1 cup (128 g) of baking soda, 1  c (240 mL) of unscented liquid castile soap, 3 cups (384 g) of coarse salt, and 20 drops of lavender essential oil.
  • Make sure you always dilute essential oils! They can be harmful to animals in large quantities.

Step 4 Bake animal-safe food and treats.

  • 1/2 cup (64 g) of cornmeal, 6 US tbsp (89 mL) of oil, 2 cups (256 g) of whole wheat flour, and 2 ⁄ 3   c (160 mL) of water or broth.
  • Spread the dough out on a cookie sheet and bake the treats for 35 to 40 minutes at 350 °F (177 °C).

Step 5 Use old shirts to make toys for animals.

  • You could also donate old yarn scraps to make fun toys for cats in the shelter.

Volunteer Work

Step 1 Help clean and stock shelters or rescue groups.

  • If you have any experience with animals, like grooming or bathing, you could also volunteer your services that way.

Step 2 Donate your professional skills to a shelter or rescue group.

  • You could also volunteer to run the shelter’s social media page and spread awareness via the web.
  • Some shelters even need translators to speak with members of the public when they come in to adopt a pet.

Step 3 Take homeless animals from the vet to a shelter.

  • You’ll need a reliable vehicle with room to fit an animal cage inside.

Step 4 Socialize animals and get them used to humans.

  • Keep in mind that some animals may be slightly aggressive. While shelters won’t usually pair volunteers with aggressive animals, there is a chance they could get spooked while you’re working with them.

Step 5 Train dogs or cats to make them more adoptable.

  • Things like “sit,” “roll over,” and “heel” are great for dogs to know.

Step 6 Run a fundraising drive or event for shelters.

  • If you aren’t sure what to collect, ask your local shelter what they need first. They might be low on supplies in one area but have an abundance in another.

Step 7 Foster animals in your home until they can be adopted.

  • You should only foster animals if you have the time and the space.

Step 1 Celebrate International Homeless Animals Day on August 18th.

  • Some shelters in your area might be hosting special events, too. Reach out to see if they need volunteers or supplies as it gets closer.

Step 2 Contact your local government about helping animals.

  • To find out what the ordinances are in your area, visit https://www.peta.org/issues/animal-companion-issues/overpopulation/spay-neuter/model-spay-neuter-ordinances/ .

Step 3 Host an animal shelter talk at your school or workplace.

  • This is a great way to get kids involved with animals, too.
  • They might even bring along some cute animals!

Step 4 Sign up for an advocacy brigade.

  • You can sign up by visiting https://secure.aspca.org/take-action/join-the-advocacy-brigade .

Step 1 Adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue group.

  • Not everyone has the time or the space to adopt an animal, and that’s okay! If you can’t adopt one right now, there are tons of other things you can do to help homeless animals.
  • Most shelters and rescue groups have a small adoption fee that’s usually around $100.

Step 2 Encourage others to adopt instead of buying from a breeder.

  • Animals in pet stores usually come from breeders.

Step 3 Spay or neuter your pets.

  • Many shelters will spay or neuter animals before adopting them out.
  • You should also avoid breeding your own animals.

Community Intervention

Step 1 Look for lost pets so they don’t become homeless.

  • You can also post on social media or make a listing on your neighborhood group, like NextDoor.

Step 2 Host off-site adoption events.

  • You could host a booth like this at your local zoo, at a dog or cat show, near a pet hospital, or near a pet store.

Step 3 Help strays if you come across them.

  • You should only try to help a stray pet if you feel safe! If the animal looks aggressive or they’re in a dangerous area, leave it up to the professionals.
  • Once you get the stray in your car, you can take them to a vet (if they look hurt or injured) or your local animal shelter.

Step 4 Assist homeless people with their pets.

  • Pets provide a lot of emotional and mental support. You should try to keep the animal with the person experiencing homelessness as long as it seems safe to do so.

Essay On Animals

The quote by Anatole France, “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened”, sums it all about animals. Planet Earth is home to humans as well as animals. According to the survey, it is estimated that over 8 million species of animals exist on Earth, living on land and water. Each species has a unique place in the environment and balances the ecosystem. These species play a significant role in the stability of the ecosystem, environment, and our lives.

Essay On Animals

Since the beginning of human civilisation, humans have interacted with wildlife. Before the era of industrialisation and urbanisation, human life was dependent on animals. The big animals were a threat to our ancestors who once lived in caves and were nomads. Eventually, they learned to survive, fight and use the animal's skin for clothing, the meat for food or bait, and ivory elements as utensils or ornaments. Even as humans evolved, animals have contributed to various aspects like transportation, the economy, social life etc. The increased dependence of humans on animals has caused threats to their existence. Hence, their preservation and protection against any abuse is our responsibility.

Animals are the most adorable and loving creatures existing on Earth. They might not be able to speak, but they can understand. They have a unique mode of interaction which is beyond human understanding. There are two types of animals: domestic and wild animals.

Domestic Animals | Domestic animals such as dogs, cows, cats, donkeys, mules and elephants are the ones which are used for the purpose of domestication. Wild animals refer to animals that are not normally domesticated and generally live in forests. They are important for their economic, survival, beauty, and scientific value.

Wild Animals | Wild animals provide various useful substances and animal products such as honey, leather, ivory, tusk, etc. They are of cultural asset and aesthetic value to humankind. Human life largely depends on wild animals for elementary requirements like the medicines we consume and the clothes we wear daily.

Nature and wildlife are largely associated with humans for several reasons, such as emotional and social issues. The balanced functioning of the biosphere depends on endless interactions among microorganisms, plants and animals. This has led to countless efforts by humans for the conservation of animals and to protect them from extinction. Animals have occupied a special place of preservation and veneration in various cultures worldwide.

Animals are made up of numerous cells that can move, sense and reproduce. They play a vital role in maintaining nature’s balance. Numerous animal species exist in the land as well as water, and each has a purpose for their existence.

Different Types Of Animals

Biologists have divided into particular groups for better understanding at the species level, for instance – amphibians - animals which live on land as well as water, reptiles – which are scaled bodies and cold-blooded animals, mammals – animals which give birth to the offspring in the womb and have mammary glands, birds – animals with forelimbs evolved to wings and feather-covered body, and also lays eggs for giving birth, fishes – aquatic animals having fins in place of limbs, and gills for the respiration, insects – they are mostly six-legged or more, and mostly having a head, abdomen, and thorax.

How Animals Help Humans

Since the time of existence and evolution of human beings, we have established ourselves as the greater and more superior species because of sophisticated and advanced ways of thinking and applying. With time, humans have learned to use animals to their benefit and have also realised how to incorporate animals into our social lives:-

Animal husbandry has been in existence for a very long period of time.

Animals have been used for numerous purposes like clothing, food, entertainment, and transportation.

Animals have also been used to discover new things from tests and research. Several vaccines and medicines obtained from animals have turned out to be benison.

Animals have also been used for outer-space explorations, leading to milestone achievements in scientific discoveries.

Humans have used animals for good (sustain livelihood) and evil purposes (acts of torture to poor animals). Even as the world modernised, people have started thinking about animals and working for their rights, creating awareness among humans.

The bond between humans and animals has evolved as a strong bond, and now both coexist with a mutual understanding of nature. Humans have strived to preserve those endangered and rare species via modern conservation modes, including national parks, sanctuaries, etc.

My Experience With Animals

As a child raised in a city, I never had first-hand experience with animals. Though people domesticate animals, I was always afraid of them. Due to the fear of getting infected and being bitten, I never went near them. One fine day, I saw finches in the pet shop near my house. At first glance, I loved them for a long time, but then one of my friends asked me to reach out to them and observe them. To my astonishment, the finches drew near me and were looking at me. I thought to take them with me, and when I took them – I was amazed by their understanding, love and interactions. This led me to love the animals and look at them from a different perspective, not with a fearful heart. They are the most loving creatures existing on Earth.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on How Can We Protect Endangered Animals

Understanding endangered animals.

Endangered animals are species at risk of becoming extinct. We need to protect them to maintain balance in nature.

How to Protect Them?

We can protect endangered animals by preserving their habitats. This means not cutting down forests or polluting rivers.

Role of Laws

Laws should be made to protect these animals. Hunting, poaching, and illegal trade of endangered species should be strictly punished.

Importance of Education

Educating people about the importance of these animals and the need to protect them can also help in their conservation.

Remember, every creature has a role in our ecosystem.

250 Words Essay on How Can We Protect Endangered Animals

Understanding the plight of endangered species.

Endangered animals are those species that are at risk of extinction, primarily due to human activities. The loss of these species can significantly disrupt ecosystems, leading to environmental imbalance.

Legal Measures for Protection

One of the most potent ways to protect endangered animals is through legislation. Laws like the Endangered Species Act in the U.S. have been instrumental in saving numerous species from extinction. These laws prohibit activities that may harm endangered species and their habitats, and enforce penalties for violations.

Conservation Efforts

Conservation efforts such as creating wildlife sanctuaries and national parks provide a safe haven for endangered species. These protected areas restrict human activities, allowing animals to thrive in their natural habitats. Captive breeding programs also play a significant role in the preservation of endangered species, especially for those with dwindling populations.

Public Awareness and Education

Public awareness is a crucial tool in the fight against animal extinction. By educating people about the importance of biodiversity and the consequences of species loss, we can foster a sense of responsibility and encourage proactive conservation efforts.

Protecting endangered animals is a collective responsibility that requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders. Through legal measures, conservation efforts, and public education, we can ensure the survival of these species and maintain the balance of our ecosystems. The preservation of endangered animals is not just about saving individual species; it’s about preserving the intricate web of life on Earth.

500 Words Essay on How Can We Protect Endangered Animals

Introduction.

Endangered animals are those species at risk of becoming extinct due to various factors such as habitat loss, climate change, and human activities. The protection of these species is a pressing issue that requires global attention and concerted efforts. This essay explores strategies for protecting endangered animals.

Legislation and Enforcement

One of the most effective ways to protect endangered species is through legislation. Laws like the Endangered Species Act in the United States and the Wildlife Protection Act in India aim to protect threatened species and their habitats. However, laws are only effective if they are enforced. Therefore, governments should invest in training and equipping law enforcement agencies to tackle wildlife crimes.

Conservation Education and Public Awareness

Education is a powerful tool in the fight against species extinction. By raising public awareness about the plight of endangered animals and the importance of biodiversity, we can foster a culture of conservation. Schools, universities, and media platforms can play a significant role in this regard.

Habitat Protection and Restoration

Habitat loss is a significant threat to endangered species. Protecting and restoring habitats can help ensure the survival of these species. Establishing protected areas, implementing sustainable land use practices, and restoring degraded ecosystems are some ways to achieve this.

Scientific Research and Breeding Programs

Scientific research can provide valuable insights into the biology and ecology of endangered species, informing conservation strategies. Additionally, captive breeding and reintroduction programs can help increase population numbers and genetic diversity.

International Cooperation

Wildlife conservation is a global issue that transcends national boundaries. International cooperation is crucial for the protection of migratory species and combating wildlife trafficking. Treaties like the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) facilitate such cooperation.

Protecting endangered animals is a complex task that requires a multifaceted approach. It involves not only the creation and enforcement of laws but also education, habitat protection, scientific research, and international cooperation. By working together, we can ensure the survival of these species and the preservation of our planet’s biodiversity.
