How to write a Legal Assistant cover letter

Here’s how you can write your own eye-catching cover letter, broken down into simple steps.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When writing your Legal Assistant cover letter, it’s best to type the content into the body of your email (or the job site messaging system) and not to attach the cover letter as a separate document.

This ensures that your cover letter gets seen as soon as a recruiter or employer opens your message.

If you attach the cover letter as a document, you’re making the reader go through an unnecessary step of opening the document before reading it.

If it’s in the body of the message itself, it will be seen instantly, which hugely increases the chances of it being read.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

To kick your cover letter off, start with a friendly greeting to build rapport with the recruiter instantly.

Your greeting should be personable but professional. Not too casual, but not too formal either

Go with something like…

  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid old-fashioned greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very formal companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

After you have greeted the recruiter, it’s important to state the job you are applying to.

Recruiters are often managing multiple vacancies, so they need to know exactly which job you are referring to.

Be as specific as possible and use a reference number if you can find one.

Here are some examples you can use;

  • I am interested in applying for the role of admin assistant with your organisation.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 4057393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advertisement for a trainee project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The sole objective of your cover letter is to motivate recruiters into to opening your CV. And you achieve this by quickly explaining your suitability to the roles you are applying for.

Take a look at the job descriptions you are applying to, and make note of the most important skills and qualifications being asked for.

Then, when crafting your cover letter, make your suitability the central focus.

Explain why you are the best qualified candidate, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider you for the job.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

It is best to keep your cover letter short if you want to ensure you hold the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers. A lengthy cover letter will probably not get read in full, so keep yours to around 3-6 sentences and save the real detail for your CV.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To round of your CV, you should sign off with a professional signature.

This will give your cover letter a slick appearance and also give the recruiter all of the necessary contact information they need to get in touch with you.

The information to add should include:

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Kindest regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network –  e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Jill North IT Project Manager 078837437373 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip: To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate documents that you could copy in.

Legal Assistant cover letter example

If you’ve ever assisted in compiling a detailed legal brief, it may be a relief to know that each of the two documents you need to apply for a job as a legal assistant fits on a single page. And it’s vitally important that you do submit both documents — an outstanding legal assistant cover letter belongs with your resume as a package deal.

For expert advice and support with every cover letter preparation step, Resume.io is the right place to turn. Our job-winning resources include a wide selection of occupation-specific writing guides and free cover letter examples . In addition, we offer formatting advice, plus field-tested templates and builder tools to help you create both resumes and cover letters.

Depending on which information source is cited, confusion exists about whether a “legal assistant” is more of a paralegal or functions more like a legal secretary.

For example, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts robust 4% growth from 2022 through 2033 for “paralegals and legal assistants,” which the BLS considers to be essentially the same occupation. Yet the BLS also forecasts a 22% crash in the 2022-32 job outlook for “legal secretaries” — although many legal secretaries today call themselves legal assistants.

The BLS also says legal secretaries made a median annual salary of $48,780 in 2022, while paralegals and legal assistants made $59,200 .

But whatever your job title and role, you’ll need an outstanding cover letter to accompany your resume, and this guide will tell you everything you need to know about writing one. This cover letter writing guide, along with a legal assistant cover letter example, will discuss the following:

  • How to decide on the best cover letter format and which paragraphs the cover letter should include
  • How to maximize that impact of each cover letter paragraph, including the header, greeting, intro, body, and conclusion
  • The approach to take when writing your legal assistant cover letter
  • Mistakes to avoid when writing your cover letter

How to write a cover letter - expert guide [2024]

Here is exactly how you can write a cover letter that will stand out from the crowd, and help you land that interview.

So, what are the important things to think about as you write your cover letter? Read on to learn more, and don't forget about about our library of cover letter examples as well. Let’s dive in.

What is the purpose of a cover letter?

The purpose of a cover letter is to introduce yourself in a friendly, professional manner and attempt to establish a personal connection to a hiring manager. It should highlight your experience, skills and qualifications for the job, expanding on info that’s already in your resume.

Remember that a resume is an impersonal document — it’s mostly a collection of lists — that isn’t explicitly addressed to anyone. Resumes don’t contain the words “you” or “I,” and usually don’t include even one complete sentence. That means it's difficult to get personal with a resume.

However, getting a bit personal with the hiring manager can improve your prospects of landing an interview. A cover letter also gives you an opportunity to showcase your personality, your likability, and your passion for your job.

There are a few employers out there that prefer to receive a resume only, and you’ll have to comply with their wishes. But in most cases, a cover letter is expected to accompany a resume, so you’re starting at a distinct disadvantage if you don’t send one. You don’t want to leave employers wondering why you skipped this vital step.

Another consideration: As a legal assistant, writing (or at least typing) letters may be a major part of your job. Your cover letter should demonstrate that you are fully capable of drafting a well-written, attractively designed, properly formatted letter. Persuasive writing will improve your chances too. Our cover letter builder helps with that via pre-generated recruiter-tested phrases to combat writer’s block.

Unless you’re specifically asked not to, always include a cover letter with a job application. Don’t throw away that free increase in hiring chances.

Best format for a legal assistant cover letter

A cover letter should be one page only, a maximum of 400 words, so you’ll have to make those words count. Here’s how your letter should be structured:

  • The cover letter header
  • The cover letter greeting or salutation
  • The introduction
  • The letter body (the middle paragraphs of your letter)
  • The conclusion or call to action
  • The signature / cover letter sign-off.

Take a look at an example cover letter below, and then let’s look at what each of these sections should contain.

resume cover letter for legal assistant position

Cover letter header

The cover letter header is the space at the top of the page that contains your personal contact info: name, occupation, address, phone and email.

Sometimes the snail mail address is omitted, though it’s probably best to include one unless there’s a reason not to.

In addition to the header’s obvious purpose — so any employer will know how to reach you — it’s also an important design element on the page. You have some flexibility in the header to use a little color and be a bit creative with typography and layout. The header should also include an appropriate amount of white space.

Look through the free cover letter templates at resume.io to get an idea of some of the header options you can choose from.

Align document styles

It’s important for your resume and cover letter to have a similar look, so you want to use the same fonts, font sizes and formatting styles. The headers on both of them should be very similar, if not identical.

Aligned styles give you a “visual brand” and demonstrate your attention to detail.

This alignment of styles makes it obvious at a glance that these documents came from the same person and suggests that they were prepared to go together. They’re more memorable and harder to lose when travelling from manager to manager in a big organization.

If the styles in the two are totally different, it may look like you’ve written a new cover letter but pulled an old resume out of your files without bothering to update it.

The goal of a cover letter header is to use a visually branded design element that distinguishes you from other job applicants and shows your regard for detail and high quality.

Cover letter greeting

“Dear Mr. (or Ms.) [Last Name]” is usually all you need in your greeting, also known as a salutation, so there’s no need to overthink it.

Some people prefer a more casual “Greetings” or “Hello,” followed by a last name or first name, but beware of being too informal. Law firms tend to have a buttoned-down, formal style, and it’s best to stick to the style and tone of the company you’re targeting.

It is important to try to address your letter to a named individual — whoever is in charge of hiring. It shows respect and demonstrates your attention to detail if you’ve bothered to find out that person’s name. If it isn’t easy to determine the appropriate person, it may be a good idea to research and find out (though be careful to respect an organization’s or manager’s boundaries; don’t be too persistent).

In some cases, hiring managers prefer to remain anonymous, leaving you no choice but to use a generic salutation like “Dear [Law Firm Name] Hiring Team”.

The goal of a cover letter greeting is to start off on a friendly but professional note by making a direct personal connection with the employer.

Dear Ms. Bickley,

Cover letter introduction

The first paragraph of your letter should make a compelling and non-cliched pitch, hitting the right notes and using the right tone. You should introduce yourself, identify the job you’re seeking, and highlight the foremost reason(s) you’re qualified.

You want to get readers’ attention from the start, giving them no excuse to stop reading. Your intro should use lively language, never bland clichés or meaningless “fluff.”

The goal of the cover letter introduction is to intrigue hiring managers with an attention-grabbing preview of your qualifications that motivates them to read more.

After receiving my BA in Criminal Justice, I have spent the past two years working as a legal assistant on two of the most complex cases in the state justice system (amongst others). It was a whirlwind start to my career, but one that makes me well qualified for the role at Mastery & Associates.

Cover letter middle part (body)

The middle paragraphs of cover letters contain the “meat and potatoes” of your pitch. Here, you must make a convincing case that you are the right person for the job.

Work experience is key, so review the relevant jobs you’ve held in the past. Don’t just say where you worked or for how long, but be specific about your major accomplishments at those jobs.

Use facts and figures where possible to quantify your achievements, and use anecdotes to describe how you faced and overcame specific challenges.

The goal of the cover letter body is to make a convincing case for being hired by highlighting your most relevant accomplishments in a relatable way.

I have prepared case files and research for two of the highest-profile criminal cases over the past year: the Blacks investigation and Barney vs. Brackmann. Communication between attorneys, judges, police officials and our clients was unprecedented in terms of its depth and complexity and I received multiple commendations for my interpersonal skills.

I am adept at drafting litigation documents such as deposition notices, interrogatories and subpoenas and have been involved in witness interviews and evidence preparation. I swiftly became an expert in case management software, and I developed a method to ensure that all required data was captured in an accurate and timely basis.

As a student of criminal justice, having analysed over 500 cases, I have developed a sound appreciation of how a competent legal assistant can influence proceedings. After my move to Vermont, I hope to offer any next employer my blend of astute professional judgement, sensitive people skills and immovable sense of integrity.

If you have a relevant university degree, certifications in the field, or any special skills, you can also mention them in the body of your letter.

Additionally, if you’re aware of any special needs or challenges your prospective employer faces, you may wish to describe how you can help address them. If you can say anything specific about the firm you’re targeting, that can be a helpful way of proving that this isn’t a generic letter that you’re sending to 50 other law firms.

How to close a legal assistant cover letter (conclusion and sign-off)

You might close with a brief summary of your qualifications and perhaps a thank you for the recruiter’s time. You should also issue some kind of call to action, typically by suggesting that you are eager to hear back about setting up an interview.

Close with a “Sincerely,” “Cordially,” “All my best,” or the equivalent, and type your name. If sending this letter electronically, you may wish to add your actual scanned signature.

The goal of the cover letter conclusion and sign-off is to end on a positive, self-assured note with a call to action that shows your eagerness to interview for the role.

I am excited about the opportunity to help Mastery & Associates ensure a smooth legal process for all concerned. I understand that one of your core values is “teamwork” and I look forward to sharing the 18 letters of recommendation from my former colleagues.

I would welcome an interview to explore my application in further detail.

The psychology of writing a persuasive cover letter

You’ll see advice in our resume guides that you have to pass the screening test of applicant tracking systems (ATS) software — essentially, optimizing your application to include keywords that computer bots will be looking for.

And while that’s an important consideration, never forget that you’re writing your letter to a human being. So you should write like a human being too, and not like a robot.

A cover letter is a business letter, but that doesn’t mean it should be totally impersonal. Remember, one of the main goals of a cover letter is to establish a personal connection with someone whose help you need.

Psychologists say human beings make many decisions on an intuitive, emotional level, not necessarily employing pure reason on a cognitive level. In other words, people react with their hearts as well as their heads. Usually it’s best to appeal somehow to both emotion and reason.

Consider your tone carefully. Study the company you’re targeting, and look at how formal or casual it is in addressing the public on its website or in other communications. You should endeavor to match that tone. Google research and social media research do wonders for understanding a company’s tone and corporate culture.

Also consider your position relative to the person you’re writing to. A candidate for CEO might write a letter differently, but a legal assistant seeking a support position can never afford to be arrogant or presumptuous. Confidence is great, but overconfidence is not.

Put yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager and try to read your letter through that person’s eyes. If you received this letter, would you want to meet the person who wrote it — and possibly work with them for years to come?

Remember that a cover letter should always be about how you can help the company, not how the company can help you.

Legal assistant cover letter with no experience

Becoming a legal assistant without experience may be challenging, but there are ways to structure your cover letter to put your best foot forward.

There are a few things you can mention in your cover letter to increase your chances of getting hired:

  • Your interest in and passion for the law
  • Any relevant legal education, training, or certifications
  • Your organizational and/or administrative skills from other fields
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to communicate.

A cover letter is a great place to make up for gaps in your resume by speaking directly to the qualities that will make you a great addition to the organization.

Basic mistakes in a legal assistant application letter (and how to avoid them)

Here are some common mistakes people make in writing cover letters:

  • Typos, misspellings, grammatical errors, and other writing mistakes can automatically sink your ship. Remember that your cover letter is, in part, a demonstration of important job-related skills.
  • Copy/paste letters that are not customized for a specific employer are easy to spot. Every cover letter should be written for a unique recipient.
  • Clichés, HR-speak, and “fluff” — fancy language that doesn’t say anything — are always a turnoff. Write in fresh, original language, avoiding phrases that hiring managers have seen dozens of times before.
  • Irrelevant info about your hobbies or interests that don’t illustrate what makes you a good legal assistant should be left out.
  • Bad formatting and design, strange fonts or unusual file types can all be disqualifiers.

Key takeaways

  • You need the electronic equivalent of just two pieces of paper — a resume and a cover letter — to get a job as a legal assistant, so you need to avoid errors and make every word count.
  • Cover letters are a critical tool for establishing a personal connection to a hiring manager, as well as showcasing your personality and passion. You should always include a cover letter with a resume unless you’re specifically asked not to.
  • Follow proper cover letter structure to make sure you’ve included everything you need to and nothing you don’t.
  • Follow proper cover letter formatting and design to make sure your letter looks as good as it reads.
  • Write a persuasive letter by putting yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager and sending the letter they would be hoping to receive.
  • Avoid deal-breaking mistakes in writing, format, and design.

Use the job description as a guide for your writing tone, as well as your choices in terms of content. In other words, don’t give examples of how familiar you are with environmental law if you’re applying for a role centered around insurance and billing claims!

Writing a snappy greeting and intro

Your target audience is . . . what’s their name again? You should know, and your cover letter should address the recipient by name! Do any research you can to find out who you’re writing to.

You’ll also want to connect with the company alongside the reader, and your research can also come in handy here. What kinds of values can you find on the company site? Is there a mission statement included in the job description that you can reflect to show your alignment with this particular legal role?

And make sure you hook your reader by hearkening to all the other skills that you don’t mention by name just yet. You want them to read about all your success stories you describe from your professional history!

Don’t use a nameless greeting or an opener that doesn’t specify any actual qualifications or provide a good hook:

Hi Sir/Madam,

I really want to work for your company and I’ve watched a lot of TV shows about courtrooms on top of working with legal stuff before so I’d be great at it.

Instead, look at how compelling a professional greeting, a connection with the company, and alignment with its values can be:

This one’s a winner!

Pepper Hamilton LLP’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and nurturing a diverse workforce that reflects a broad spectrum of backgrounds truly resonates with my professional philosophy. Upon reading about your growth from a modest two-person office to an international firm employing more than 500 lawyers, I knew I wanted to contribute to your illustrious establishment as a legal assistant.

Writing body paragraphs to impress

Now it’s time to write the body of your cover letter, maintaining one point or “theme” per paragraph. (Recruiters don’t have much time to spend reading, so organization and concision are important!)

Provide examples of how you’ve created success in the past with your quick response times, data organization, and case updates. When did you save your employer a significant amount of money by catching a potentially costly error? How did you improve client outcomes by efficiently documenting and procuring case information?

Don’t forget to include metrics! Success percentages, ratings, and feedback all help bolster your claims and make you sound more credible. Tailor the stories you share and the metrics you back them with around whatever the job description emphasizes to show that you care about that specific role.

Example of an excellent body paragraph

In the digitally infused ecosystem of Barrow & Grimm, I further enhanced my data privacy and security prowess. My rigorous application of data protection measures ensured the absolute confidentiality of sensitive information and boosted the firm’s compliance rate by 23%. This fundamental aspect of my role garnered trust from colleagues and clients, cementing my ability to navigate legal spheres with measured discretion and confidentiality.

Closing your cover letter and signing off

Now that you’ve written some memorable body paragraphs to share your impact within the legal field, you’ll want to conclude your cover letter with a strong closing paragraph. Say it again: Why did you want to work there? How are you qualified?

Just make sure your qualifications are fresh, non-repetitive, and strongly connected with the company vision and job description . You should also include a call to action so that the reader feels welcome to ask for more details about your excellent administrative skills and useful legal knowledge.

And don’t forget to thank the reader for their time! You can work this into the closing paragraph, or you can use it as your formal signoff. If you pick the former, make sure your signoff is professional and features your real name.

For the love of all that’s legal, make sure you don’t conclude your letter with an overly casual, unenthusiastic closer and a nickname:

Hey so that’s why I’d be great at keeping track of your clients and everything. It’d be cool if you messaged me back.

Check out how much more effective it is to address and connect with the company, throw in some solid abilities and skills that align with the job role, and sign off politely!

Phew, much better:

As a prospective legal support specialist as McAfee & Taft, I bring not only the requisite skills and relevant experience but also a detail-oriented mindset, demonstrable proficiency in the technological tools of the trade, and a solid commitment to data protection. I am excited by the prospect of leveraging my abilities to contribute to the firm’s outstanding reputation for legal excellence. Thank you in advance for considering my application.

Legal Assistant Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid

  • As a legal assistant, your ability to create and update legal records and case documents is key. Oh, and they need to be as accurate and professional as possible! Take care to spend time proofreading your cover letter for any grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors that could undermine your efforts to show your eye for detail.
  • Most legal firms and institutions you’ll work for in a legal assistant role will be formal and require a high level of professionalism. Demonstrate your readiness for the new work environment by writing your cover letter in a tone that aligns with it. Research the business or organizational values, mission statements, and posts like LinkedIn updates to get a good compass. Then, revisit the job description to see if there are any unique, key phrases there to reference.
  • Streamline your body paragraphs to state what you did, why you did it, and how it measurably benefited the firm you worked for. Keep each paragraph focused on a single primary point, and don’t meander. Things can get fast-paced in the legal world, and you’ll need to demonstrate your knack for conveying information concisely and quickly.

Oh, absolutely! Metrics aren’t just for resumes. If you provide quantifiable data, your cover letter will make you look way more credible and solidly reinforce your credentials. Numbers also stand out visually in a cover letter, so that case success rate is bound to be eye-catching!

While you might see addresses listed on some cover letter examples as you conduct your research, this really isn’t necessary anymore. The letter already got through if they’re reading it, after all! And your own address will be on your resume and/or application form. So, save the page space for your awesome stories of successful case outcomes and brilliant accuracy rates.

Get a feel for the company culture by doing plenty of research and taking some notes while you look for other important stuff like your addressee’s name and legal assistant traits to align yourself with. Do you have a shared passion for advocacy for underprivileged clients? What about a strong connection with their emphasis on environmental protection?

The top sections on a legal assistant cover letter

Header: This should contain the applicant's contact information, the date, and the address of the law firm or employer, establishing a professional tone and making it easy for the recruiter to reach out.

Greeting: Address the letter to a specific person if possible, such as "Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name]," to demonstrate attention to detail and a personalized approach which is essential in legal work.

Introduction: Briefly mention the legal assistant position applied for, how you learned about it and include a strong opening statement that highlights your most relevant qualification or experience to instantly grab the recruiter's attention.

Body: Detail your relevant skills, experiences, and accomplishments, particularly those involving legal research, document preparation, case management, and client interaction, thereby showcasing your capability to handle responsibilities specific to a legal assistant role.

Closing: Reiterate your enthusiasm for the position, thank the recruiter for considering your application, and indicate your willingness to provide further information or attend an interview, ending the letter with a professional and proactive conclusion.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Attention to detail: Essential for reviewing and preparing accurate legal documents.
  • Strong organizational skills: Necessary to manage case files and coordinate various tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality: Paramount for handling sensitive client information and adhering to legal privacy standards.
  • Proficiency with legal software and technology: Critical for drafting documents, conducting research, and streamlining workflow.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills: Important for drafting clear legal correspondence and effectively interacting with attorneys, clients, and court personnel.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and procedures: Fundamental to understanding and assisting with the processes involved in legal cases.

What greeting should you use in your legal assistant cover letter salutation

A simple "Hello" or "Hey" just won't work.

With your legal assistant cover letter salutation , you set the tone of the whole communication.

You should thus address the hiring managers by using their first (or last name) in your greeting.

But how do you find out who's recruiting for the role?

The easiest way is to look up the role on LinkedIn or the corporate website.

Alternatively, you could also contact the organization via social media or email, for more information.

Unable to still obtain the recruiter's name?

Don't go down the "To whom it may concern path". Instead, start your cover letter with a "Dear HR team".

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Law Firm Name] Team,
  • Dear [Specific Attorney's Name],
  • Dear Ms./Mr. [Last Name],
  • Esteemed Members of [Law Firm Name],
  • Respected [Job Title or Department],

Your legal assistant cover letter intro: showing your interest in the role

On to the actual content of your legal assistant cover letter and the introductory paragraph .

The intro should be no more than two sentences long and presents you in the best light possible.

Use your legal assistant cover letter introduction to prove exactly what interests you in the role or organization. Is it the:

  • Company culture;
  • Growth opportunities;
  • Projects and awards the team worked on/won in the past year;
  • Specific technologies the department uses.

When writing your legal assistant cover letter intro, be precise and sound enthusiastic about the role.

Your introduction should hint to recruiters that you're excited about the opportunity and that you possess an array of soft skills, e.g. motivation, determination, work ethic, etc.

That one achievement in your legal assistant cover letter body

The lengthiest part of your legal assistant cover letter is the body.

Within the next three to six middle paragraphs, present yourself as the best candidate for the role .

How can you do that without retelling your whole professional resume?

Select one key achievement that covers job-crucial skills and technologies (and is memorable).

Within the body of your legal assistant cover letter, aim to tell the story of how you achieved your success. Also, write about how this would help out your potential team.

Finishing off your legal assistant cover letter with what matters most

So far, you've done a fantastic job in tailoring your legal assistant cover letter for the role and recruiter.

Your final opportunity to make a good impression is your closing paragraph.

And, no, a "Sincerely yours" just won't do, as it sounds too vague and impersonal.

End your legal assistant cover letter with the future in mind.

So, if you get this opportunity, what do you plan to achieve? Be as specific, as possible, of what value you'd bring to the organization.

You could also thank recruiters for their interest in your profile and prompt for follow-up actions (and organizing your first interview).

What could you write about in your legal assistant cover letter when you have no experience

Candidates with zero professional experience often struggle to write their legal assistant cover letter .

You may lack experience, but your application could still be impressive when you focus on your strengths.

Consider your most relevant talents (and/or one achievement) that align with the role and help you stand out.

Perhaps you spent every summer volunteering at your local dog pound - think of the job-relevant skills this experience taught you.

Sharing your tangible career goals is another good strategy to stand out.

Key takeaways

Your legal assistant cover letter is your best shot at standing out by showing your motivation and the unique skills you'd bring to the job:

  • Chose no more than one achievement, which you'd be talking about in the body of your legal assistant cover letter, by focusing on skills and outcomes;
  • Address recruiters with their first or last name, or "Dear Hiring Manager" in your legal assistant cover letter greeting;
  • Introduce in no more than two sentences what makes your profile unique (perhaps it's your motivation, enthusiasm, or appreciation of the company you're applying for);
  • Select the same font you have used in your resume (avoid Times New Roman and Arial, as most candidates tend to invest in them);
  • Close your legal assistant cover letter with a promise of how you see yourself growing in the company and the benefits you'd bring about.

Cover Letter - Legal Assistant Position

I for the most part have my resume updated, but am having a very difficult time with my cover letter. Particularly the paragraphs about each job. Not sure if I’m going about it the right way or not.

I receive a lot of messages from recruiters on LinkedIn as I live in a very large metropolitan area and my job is always in demand (coworkers have switched jobs in less than a week of actively looking) but I’m now looking outside of the city to reduce my commute so jobs will be a little harder to find so I want to be effective. Just wondering if anyone could give any input if it sounds ok?

Here’s also a link to my resume for reference. Not sure why it’s showing up so dark. I will edit resume and cover letter as needed per position.

Enclosed please find my resume for the position of [title] at [firm/company], found on [website].

For over ten years, I have worked in law firms providing support for up to five attorneys at a time. Through my experience, I have learned to communicate to understand expectations and minimize errors, developed a strong ability to prioritize assignments to ensure deadlines are met, and am able to adapt to working with multiple and varying preferences and personalities.

In my position at Firm 1, I began as an Office Assistant/Receptionist and was promoted to a Legal Assistant after three months. I supported a fast-paced family law team where I was the initial contact for all cold calls and created and maintained Financial Disclosure Statements and Martial Balance Sheets. I also served as the primary contact for all class action lawsuits and handled a high volume of personal injury cases from start to finish.

As the Senior Litigation Legal Assistant at Firm 2, I have supported a total of ten attorneys, all with positive feedback, in the areas of sophisticated family law, labor and employment, and civil and commercial litigation. I have also provided temporary coverage to attorneys throughout the firm in additional practice groups and trained new legal secretaries through my vast knowledge of firm standards and procedures.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I'm looking forward to learning more about the [title] position and [firm/company name] and to further discuss how my qualifications can benefit your firm.

Your Free Guide to Starting Your Own Law Firm

Download this article as a PDF Loading ...

In this fiercely competitive job market, where the number of law graduates and the movement of established lawyers is ever-increasing, the significance of a well-crafted legal cover letter cannot be overstated. Whether you’re a fresh graduate or a seasoned solicitor seeking a new challenge, your cover letter is your first opportunity to stand out.

There’s constant movement in the legal job market. The 2023 Legal Trends Report explored lawyer satisfaction and discovered lawyers in mid-sized firms are more than twice as likely to have left a job in 12 months than lawyers in smaller firms and five times more likely to be planning to leave a job in the next six months.

If you want a legal career, standing out from the crowd, irrespective of your starting point, is very important. It is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of how a well-crafted legal cover letter for lawyers will elevate your chances of being engaged in the role you seek, whether it’s a training contract, vacation scheme, paralegal position or lawyer.

Your legal cover letter must be persuasive, allowing you to present your case to the prospective employer. It’s your chance to articulate why you are the best fit for the role and set yourself apart from other applicants.

Legal cover letter examples

Many online resources help you create your legal cover letter and your CV. A quick search will uncover many options. However, be very careful when using these. Ensure you delete any Americanisms and change the style and language to be more in keeping with the UK.

There are a limited number of examples of UK cover letters for lawyers. However, two worthy of comment are from aspiring barrister Arooj Zahra Sheikh, who helped land eight mini-pupillages.

Understanding the basics of a legal cover letter

More than just a means of delivering your legal CV, your cover letter is your introduction. It’s the first thing your prospective employer will see and, most likely, read. Therefore, it’s crucial to structure it like a good story, with a compelling beginning, a detailed middle, and a strong end. If you do not spend the time and craft a compelling, professional legal cover letter, you may not have bothered applying for the job at all.

Your legal cover letter allows you to talk about yourself and the role you’re applying for and explain why you would be an ideal fit. It allows you to briefly outline your legal experience and skills and draw attention to the wealth of information in your CV, which you should always attach.

Structure your legal cover letter like a good story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Start with a strong opening, explaining who you are and why you are pursuing the position you are applying for. In the main body of your letter, expand on your legal qualifications and expertise. Keep it short; refer to your attached CV for more detailed information.

After outlining your legal qualifications and expertise, explain why your legal work experience, pro bono work, legal education , or specialisation in certain legal practice areas make you an excellent fit for the role. This is your chance to showcase your strengths and make the reader feel confident in your competence.

Your ending should express your belief you are the right candidate for the position. You must also invite the reader to get in touch with you to discuss the position further. Tell them here if you intend to follow up by phone or email with your prospective employer. Finally, thank them for their time and attention. A little gratitude can go a very long way.

What to include in your legal cover letter

The recipient’s address is one of the most crucial elements of your legal cover letter. Before you start writing, take the time to identify the recipient and their position. This allows you to address them personally in the opening salutation of your letter, a much more effective approach than the generic ‘Dear sir or madam’ or ‘To whom it may concern’. This personal touch can make the recipient feel valued and integral to your application process.

Your legal skills and legal experience are essential. Explain the stage you have reached in your legal career thus far and where you see your future in the law. Your future vision should align with the role on offer.

Next, explain why your experience to date, including any legal internships, makes you the ideal candidate for the position. Provide a brief overview of your current career. Include references to your academic and vocational journey, such as your law degree, LPC or SQE.

If you have been involved in an area relevant to the position offered, like legal research , legal analysis or legal writing , make sure you highlight that. Again, keep it brief. You can expand on your experience in your CV, but you must include enough information in your legal cover letter to encourage your prospective employer to read more.

As you approach the close of your cover letter, include why you are the ideal person for the advertised position. Include the phone number where someone can contact you. Most of all, say “thank you” for the opportunity.

Common mistakes to avoid in legal cover letters for lawyers

There are some critical “don’ts” when you prepare your legal cover letter.

  • Never make fake claims about your qualifications or experience . If you’re successful, you’ll be quickly discovered – and probably sacked!
  • Avoid the use of jargon. The recipient knows all about the jargon, and it won’t impress!
  • Don’t over-promote. While the reader will want to know about your background, avoid writing lengthy passages about yourself. Over-promoting yourself can be off-putting and may disqualify you from consideration. Respect the reader’s time by being concise and to the point, ensuring that your cover letter is a respectful length.
  • Don’t forget to focus on your suitability for the position. Failing to explain why you’re a perfect fit for the role will likely disqualify you from consideration, even if you have an impressive legal CV.
  • Don’t waffle! Be clear, concise and to the point.

Additional tips for standing out

Nothing is worse than a prospective employer receiving a poorly worded, meandering, and grammatically flawed legal cover letter. Here are some tips to make sure your cover letter stands out:

  • Use professional yet engaging language. This shows that you are competent and an excellent communicator.
  • Do your homework on the law firm to whom you’re applying. Read their website and speak to anyone you know who works there, is a client, or has a professional relationship with them. Demonstrate your commercial awareness.
  • If you have any awards or recognitions, make sure you mention them. These might be the deciding factor between two equally qualified candidates.
  • Mention your competencies. If you excel at something relevant, mention it.
  • Proofread and spellcheck your legal cover letter. This may seem common sense, but make sure your spell-check language settings are set to English (United Kingdom). You can even have MS Word read your letter to help you check for typos!
  • Try to keep your letter to one A4 sheet.
  • Make sure the font is large enough to read but not so large as to force a multiple-page letter—and don’t use Comic Sans!
  • Use the same font in your legal CV as in your legal cover letter.

Final thoughts on how to write a legal cover letter for lawyers

In a crowded legal job market, there’s no better way to outshine the competition than an excellent legal cover letter. Ensure you’re putting your best foot forward with your future employer by:

  • Making it personal.  Customise your cover letter at every step to the firm you’re applying to—from the tone to the specific skills you detail.
  • Keeping it brief.  Cover letters for lawyers are a one-page summary to let your prospective employer know that you’re a candidate they should talk to further. You want to give them enough information to draw them in but not overwhelm them and risk losing interest.
  • Showcasing your strengths.  Focus on the positives, and don’t be afraid to highlight how your past experiences make you uniquely qualified.

While finding a new legal job in a competitive market isn’t exactly easy,  staying resilient  and adaptive will lead you to success. By crafting a great cover letter, you’re more likely to be noticed in this—and any—job market.  And, no matter what job you’re applying for, knowing technology can help set you apart—both when job hunting and once you’re working at your new firm.

Legal Cover Letter FAQs

Do law firms read cover letters.

In a competitive job market, hiring managers at law firms read cover letters to help determine which candidates may be the best fit. A well-written legal cover letter can entice the reader to review your resume—and, hopefully, invite you for an interview—by showcasing how your experience and skills align with the role.
