Aranmanai 3 Review - A film that defies all logic!

Sundar C’s never ending ‘Aranmanai' film franchise is back with its third installment and this time, with more comedians and attempts at horror! With Arya seen in an extended cameo alongside Raashi Khanna, the film also stars Padmashri Vivek, Sampath, Yogi Babu, Manobala, Andrea Jeremiah, Sakshi Agarwal and a few others! Does Aranmanai 3 entertain its fans? Read further to find out.

Now when you walk into the theatre for this film, you obviously know what to expect from team Sundar C! Just as expected, there are elements of horror, comedy, a little bit of glamour, galatta and an attempt at trying to weave a flashback that holds the reasoning for the ghost’s revenge.

For those who do not know, this is the mix of elements that every Aranmanai film ever had and hence, do not expect anything in the form of a surprise with this one. 

Sampath plays Rajasekhar, a rich man who owns an Aranmanai and his family resides in it. His wife (Andrea) is no more and he loathes his daughter (Raashi Khanna) as he believes she is the reason for the demise of his wife (death during pregnancy). A kid in this house has been speculating about the presence of a ghost but nobody believes this kid. Enter Yogi Babu and Manobala as comedians and Arya as an electrician as the commotion follows. What happens next is quite simple. What is the purpose of this ghost and whether it is achieved or not forms for the rest of this horror-comedy.

As for performances, it is refreshing to see Vivek in this film even though scope for acting is minimal. Arya, who is basking in the success of Sarpetta, is seen only in a cameo for songs and a couple of scenes. Sampath and Sundar C have solid characters to play as does Madhusudhanan Rao and they play their parts well. Andrea too, delivers a decent performance. Yogi Babu and Manobala do not evoke laughter at most instances and the other characters do not leave any impact.

Aranmanai 3 starts off as a ghost film, slowly translates into a comedy drama and gets back to the horror mode in quick time. The only difference between this film and the other two are that, the story (flashback) is given more importance in this one than the songs and comedy. For instance, the first half itself has a few sequences that build up to the reasoning for the ghost’s revenge. A series of murders are shown and this is somewhat interesting.

The best part of Aranmanai 3 however is Shankar Mahadevan and Hariharan’s song Theeyaga Thondri towards the climax. The energetic performances of these two singers along with their surprise cameo is a breather for most audiences. Because towards this point in the latter half, most of us would be exhausted with the attempts for humour by the ‘comedy pattalam’. The climax is decently written and the characters that are involved are the only ones that matter to the story. If this was the case with the entire film, we might have had a more interesting drama.

Technically, Aranmanai 3 is just about average. Cinematography by UK Senthil Kumar is functional and music by C.Sathya is alright. The Theeyaga song is a saviour and the edit definitely required a few scenes being chopped off. With a run-time of about 156 minutes, one would wish it were a 2 hour film at many points.

Overall, Sundar C’s third Aranmanai is a no-logic horror entertainer that has a passable backstory. Even though we cannot emotionally connect with the motive of the ghost, the scenes that involved the storyline might keep audiences a tad bit interested. However, this formula has definitely fizzled out and requires a quick change before audiences show their red cards! This one though, might just escape.

Just another commercial film from the ‘Aranamanai’ franchise with average packaging!

Aranmanai 3 movie review: Sundar C's horror-comedy, starring Arya and Raashi Khanna, is a humdrum fare

With hardly any novelty in the plot and the screenplay as old as the hills, there isn't any moment in the film which leaves us terrified or in splits

Story: The spirit of a dead girl starts bothering the family members who reside in a huge bungalow. They seek the help of a temple priest who possesses magical powers to tame the deadly ghost. He discovers the motive behind the revenge-seeking spirit, which in turn, leads to mind-boggling revelations.      

Review: First things first. Those who watched Aranmanai and Aranmanai 2 know what to expect from Aranmanai 3 . The third installment in the popular franchise demands suspension of disbelief and enormous patience from the audience if at all they intend to sit through this supposedly horror-comedy. 

Director Sundar C, who has once again taken the tried-and-tested route, falters this time due to various reasons. Despite the movie featuring a bevy of talented artists, including Vivekh, Andrea, Yogi Babu, Manobala, Sampath, Vela Ramamoorthy and Nalini, apart from the leads played by Arya and Raashi Khanna, the story offers no scope for any of them to showcase a commendable performance.  

Like the previous installments of the franchise, Aranmanai 3 , too, begins with a huge bungalow which is haunted by an unknown spirit. By now, we know how things work in the Aranmanai universe. In fact, a few minutes into the film, we can easily predict the further proceedings, including the climax. 

What remains unknown is the reason why the spirit turned revengeful and who all are going to be its prey one after another. But to make things unpredictable, we are fed with a slew of comedy tracks at regular intervals whenever the makers remember that it is a horror-comedy and hence funny sequences are required.

Saravanan (Arya), an electrician, enters the bungalow to rectify the wiring problems there, and starts dreaming of leading a life with Jyoti (Raashi Khanna), the heir of the palatial building, whom he also knows from childhood. The constant complaints from Jyoti's niece about the presence of a spirit there make her father (played by Sundar C himself) reach out to a temple priest only to discover that she was right. 

The priest, who possesses magical powers, tracks down the two-decade-old story behind the dangerous spirit, and starts working on ideas to tame it. But to his shock, the bungalow witnesses a couple of horrifying murders. Will he able to destroy the ghost?

With hardly any novelty in the plot and the screenplay as old as the hills, there isn't any moment in the film which leaves us terrified or in splits. Neither the horror portions work, nor the comedy tracks by Vivekh, Yogi Babu and Manobala. What is more saddening is how Arya's character is written. 

Apart from an ineffective twist which is related to his role, he doesn't have anything to do in the movie despite him playing the protagonist. Much similar to its sequels, Sundar C's character lands out of nowhere, and unsurprisingly, he knows everything about the ghost more than the ghost knows about itself.  

Andrea Jeremiah comes up with an earnest performance in the limited scope she has in the flashback episode. Sampath, as the antagonist, does what he usually does in films which have him play the ruthless guy. Vela Ramamoorthy is decent and handles a few expressions effectively. The music by C Sathya is okayish while UK Senthil Kumar's cinematography is enjoyable. The stunt sequences, which were claimed to be lavishly shot during its shooting, leave no impact.  

Verdict: With lack of innovative ideas and clumsy screenplay, the horror-comedy is outdated and tests patience after a point.

Aranmanai 4 movie review: A template Sundar C horror-comedy aimed at the masses

The Aranmanai franchise has worked for director Sundar C in the past and he is back with the fourth installment. While some may have disliked his previous Aranmanai films, the audience just can’t seem to get enough of them as Aranmanai 3 released in 2021 turned out to be one of the most commercially successful ones of the year. Aranmanai 4 also follows a similar template that combines horror-comedy and moments of fun for the kids which brings in the family audience. Given that it's a summer release, the family audience may just find it that whets their appetite like Aranmanai 3.

The premise

At the heart of Aranmanai 4 is a large house in the middle of a forest, a supernatural force, a ghost, numerous comic characters, several kids, a godman, pretty women, poojas, a song in honour of the Gods and Sundar C himself who comes to save the day. The story in this film revolves around Selvi ( Tamannaah Bhatia ) and her husband ( Santhosh Prathap ) who reside in a large house in the forest with their two kids. They are living a relatively happy life when for some unknown reason her husband suddenly tries to kill her and the kids. The kids survive this horrendous attack but the couple don’t and cops intimate Selvi’s brother, lawyer Saravanan (Sundar C), about this horrible incident. Saravanan and his aunt (Kovai Sarala) rush from the city to Selvi’s place and Saravanan decides to investigate what really happened.

As Saravanan probes into the entire tragedy along with the police, numerous unexplained deaths start to take place, along with the emergence of a ghost in their house. Maestry ( Yogi Babu ) and Carpenter (VTV Ganesh) were helping Selvi’s husband with his work and they also begin to help Saravanan in his investigation. Now, we also have Dr Maya’s ( Raashi Khanna ) grandfather (Delhi Ganesh) living in the house as he has been entrusted with the house. The plan is to sell the house so Maya can build a hospital and do social service.

During Saravanan’s investigation he discovers a godman who seems to know more about this ghost and when the cops catch him, he reveals there’s another evil presence as well. Why is the ghost haunting Selvi’s house? What is this other evil presence? How can they prevent the deaths taking place and get rid of this presence? How does Saravanan manage to protect his family and does he find out what really happened to Selvi and her husband?

The performances

Director Sundar C has ensured he has added more cast members to this franchise and along with the above-mentioned cast, we also have director KS Ravikumar, Rajendran, Singampuli, Vichu Vishwanath, and V Jayaprakash. Thus, we have at least four comedians to give us some laughs while the glamour quotient is provided by Raashi Khanna. Given the large cast, many of them just come and go (as expected) and no one really stands out as we have seen them all perform similar roles in other films as well. Tamannaah Bhatia, who is central to the story, essays the role of an emotional mother quite admirably and Raashi Khanna too has delivered as Maya. But it is Khushbu (who is married to Sundar C) and Simran’s special appearance in the second half of the film which was a pleasant surprise and amped up the film.

Final thoughts

Sundar C’s Aranmanai series is meant for the masses who just want to entertained without too much of logic – they want some jump scares, some funny dialogues and comical exchanges between the cast, some fights, some element of faith, a thumping song and the climax where the evil is vanquished and everyone’s a happy family once again. With four installments now, the director seems to have aced the concept because this is exactly what Aranmanai 4 is all about as well. Aranmanai 4 is timepass and if you go in with no expectations, you will not come out raving about the film but you won’t come out bitterly disappointed either.

Aranmanai 4 is described as a blend of horror and comedy.

Director Sundar C’s latest film Aranmanai 4 released at the cinema halls on May 3, 2024. Starring actors like Raashi Khanna, Yogi Babu and Tamannaah Bhatia, this film has garnered positive reviews upon its release. Aranmanai 4 is described as a blend of horror and comedy. Avni Cinemax, Benzz Media and Lyca Productions have produced this film. The popular duo of Hiphop Tamizha (Adhi and R Jeeva) and composer Kharesma Ravichandran have scored the music of this film. E Krishna Samy has handled the cinematography of this movie. The narrative of this film begins with a lawyer Saravanan (Sundar C) getting the news of his sister Selvi (Tamannaah Bhatia)’s death. Selvi died by suicide after the death of her husband. Saravanan goes to her home to take care of her children. He then realises that the reason behind his sister’s death could not have been suicide. How he unravels the truth behind it with the help of a doctor Maaya (Raashi Khanna) and villagers form the premise of the film.

Direction is the USP of Aranmanai 4. Sundar C has inculcated a lot of interesting elements in this film compared to the earlier instalments. He has shown the characters and how they are investigated in an extremely compelling manner. In addition to this, the horror scenes he has curated and other twists also leave the viewers hooked to the screens. These elements have made the first half of Aranmanai 4 enjoyable. The filmmaker also ensured to break the monotony by including some humorous scenes in the second part of the narrative as well. The climax of the film in the last 30 minutes is one of the major highlights for viewers. Sundar C kept in mind not to include unnecessary comedy sequences in the movie’s premise and to include them only where required.

The actors ticked all the boxes right with their impressive performances in Aranmanai 4. Kovai Sarala, Yogi Babu and VTV Ganesh ensured with their comedy that there was never a single dull moment in the film. Sundar C, the director also played the lead role in this movie and received praise along with Tamannaah and Raashi.

Other Factors

There was not much scope for the music and cinematography part in this film. The VFX part, however, accounted for a bigger portion of Aranmanai 4 and managed to impress the viewers.

Some of the viewers also came up with their reviews of the film on social media.

One of the users tweeted, “Familiar scares & laughs, but uneven pacing & recycled plot hold it back. Strong 2nd half, impressive visuals & decent performances. Slow start, a repetitive story, and a weak 1st half. Watch for cameos & spooky fun!”.

Aranmanai 4 Strikes Gold! Sundar C's Horror-Comedy Becomes First Tamil Film To Gross Rs 100 Crore In 2024

Aranmanai 4, has done what other Tamil films could not do for the Kollywood box office! It has broken a dry spell at the BO. This year, no film was able to win big at the Tamil Nadu box office, however, Aranmanai 4 seems to have turned the tables.

It has become the first Tamil film of 2024 to earn Rs 100 crore. Yes, you read that right!

Aranmanai 4 Earns Rs 100 Crore

Avni Media, the official producers of the film posted "A celebration in theatres, a phenomenon at the box office, The first Tamil movie of 2024 to gross Rs 100 crore worldwide. And it's all the love you have given us."

Directed by ace director Sundar C, the film which is the fourth instalment in the horror-comedy franchise, has achieved the feat within three-weeks of its release.

Tamannaah Bhatia's Aranmanai 4 Beats Manjummel Boys And Ayalaan

As per a report on Sacnilk, a few days ago Aranmanai 4 had grossed approximately Rs 63 crores at the domestic box office, including Rs 56.50 crores in Tamil and Rs 5.50 crores in the Telugu version. Beating the collection of the Malayalam film Manjummel Boys at the TN box office.

The overseas collection of Aranmanai 4 garnered Rs 16 crore in 17 days. As per the tracking website, Ayalaan, which released in January had grossed approximately Rs 76.50 crores by the end of its run. The sci-fi film is now only the second highest-grossing Tamil film of the year.

Ayalaan released on January 12, 2024. The science fiction film written and directed by R. Ravikumar, was produced by Kotapadi J. Rajesh under KJR Studios. The film featured Sivakarthikeyan, Rakul Preet Singh, Sharad Kelkar, Isha Koppikar, in lead roles.

SUNDAR C'S ARANMANAI 3 - THE ARANMANAI WHERE THE MOVIE IS BEING SHOT! PICTURE HERE!

Aranmanai 3 directed by Sundar C is currently taking place in Rajkhot, Gujarat. Similar to the earlier movies from the same series, the movie is also a mega multistarrer movie - including top stars Arya, Andrea Jeremiah, Raashi Khanna, Sakshi Agarwal. 

The project will be bankrolled by Avni Pictures. T he shoot schedule is planned for a duration of 25 days in Rajkhot near Gujarat. This time, for a change, a set is not being erected for the movie, and it is being shot at a real palace. Here is the picture of the current shooting location - the aranmanai where 'Aranmanai 3' is being shot.

Another interesting update from the movie is that popular Vijay TV actress, who in dazzled everyone with her impressive performance in the recent Sivakarthikeyan movie 'Namma Veettu Pillai' - Actress Myna Nandhini is also a part of the cast. She had mentioned this in her instagram story! 

We had reported earlier that the main cast of the film include Vivekh and Yogi Babu. Incidentally, the first two movies of the series also included 3 heroines - Andrea, Hansika Motwani, & Lakshmi Rai (Aranmanai), Hansika, Poonam Bajwa, Trisha (Aranmanai 2).

It had also been learnt exclusively that the film will feature music composed by Sathya who had earlier debuted into Tamil industry as the music composer in the sleeper hit film Engeyum Eppodhum and his recent works was in the critically acclaimed film, Parthiban’s Oththa Seruppu Size 7.
