• Each is made up of one or several paragraphs.
• The purpose of this section is to introduce the topic and why it matters, identify the specific focus of the paper, and indicate how the paper will be organized.
• To keep from being too broad or vague, try to incorporate a keyword from your title in the first sentence.
• For example, you might tell readers that the issue is part of an important debate or provide a statistic explaining how many people are affected.  
• Defining your terms is particularly important if there are several possible meanings or interpretations of the term.

Well, beyond a jumble of words usually around 2,000 words or so - what is an essay, exactly? Whether you’re taking English, sociology, history, biology, art, or a speech class, it’s likely you’ll have to write an essay or two. So how is an essay different than a research paper or a review? Let’s find out!

Defining the Term – What is an Essay?

The essay is a written piece that is designed to present an idea, propose an argument, express the emotion or initiate debate. It is a tool that is used to present writer’s ideas in a non-fictional way. Multiple applications of this type of writing go way beyond, providing political manifestos and art criticism as well as personal observations and reflections of the author.

An essay can be as short as 500 words, it can also be 5000 words or more.  However, most essays fall somewhere around 1000 to 3000 words ; this word range provides the writer enough space to thoroughly develop an argument and work to convince the reader of the author’s perspective regarding a particular issue.  The topics of essays are boundless: they can range from the best form of government to the benefits of eating peppermint leaves daily. Origins of the Essay

Over the course of more than six centuries essays were used to question assumptions, argue trivial opinions and to initiate global discussions. Let’s have a closer look into historical progress and various applications of this literary phenomenon to find out exactly what it is.

Today’s modern word “essay” can trace its roots back to the French “essayer” which translates closely to mean “to attempt” .  This is an apt name for this writing form because the essay’s ultimate purpose is to attempt to convince the audience of something.  An essay’s topic can range broadly and include everything from the best of Shakespeare’s plays to the joys of April.

The essay comes in many shapes and sizes; it can focus on a personal experience or a purely academic exploration of a topic.  Essays are classified as a subjective writing form because while they include expository elements, they can rely on personal narratives to support the writer’s viewpoint.  The essay genre includes a diverse array of academic writings ranging from literary criticism to meditations on the natural world.  Most typically, the essay exists as a shorter writing form; essays are rarely the length of a novel.  However, several historic examples, such as John Locke’s seminal work “An Essay Concerning Human Understanding” just shows that a well-organized essay can be as long as a novel.

The Essay in Literature

The essay enjoys a long and renowned history in literature.  They first began gaining in popularity in the early 16 th century, and their popularity has continued today both with original writers and ghost writers.  Many readers prefer this short form in which the writer seems to speak directly to the reader, presenting a particular claim and working to defend it through a variety of means.  Not sure if you’ve ever read a great essay? The Essay in Academics

Five paragraph essay

Argumentative essay

These essays are commonly assigned to explore a controversial issue.  The goal is to identify the major positions on either side and work to support the side the writer agrees with while refuting the opposing side’s potential arguments.

Compare and Contrast essay

This essay compares two items, such as two poems, and works to identify similarities and differences, discussing the strength and weaknesses of each.  This essay can focus on more than just two items, however.  The point of this essay is to reveal new connections the reader may not have considered previously.

Definition essay

This essay has a sole purpose – defining a term or a concept in as much detail as possible. Sounds pretty simple, right? Well, not quite. The most important part of the process is picking up the word. Before zooming it up under the microscope, make sure to choose something roomy so you can define it under multiple angles. The definition essay outline will reflect those angles and scopes.

Descriptive essay

Perhaps the most fun to write, this essay focuses on describing its subject using all five of the senses.  The writer aims to fully describe the topic; for example, a descriptive essay could aim to describe the ocean to someone who’s never seen it or the job of a teacher.  Descriptive essays rely heavily on detail and the paragraphs can be organized by sense.

Illustration essay

The purpose of this essay is to describe an idea, occasion or a concept with the help of clear and vocal examples. “Illustration” itself is handled in the body paragraphs section. Each of the statements, presented in the essay needs to be supported with several examples. Illustration essay helps the author to connect with his audience by breaking the barriers with real-life examples – clear and indisputable.

Informative Essay

Being one the basic essay types, the informative essay is as easy as it sounds from a technical standpoint. High school is where students usually encounter with informative essay first time. The purpose of this paper is to describe an idea, concept or any other abstract subject with the help of proper research and a generous amount of storytelling.

Narrative essay

This type of essay focuses on describing a certain event or experience, most often chronologically.  It could be a historic event or an ordinary day or month in a regular person’s life. Narrative essay proclaims a free approach to writing it, therefore it does not always require conventional attributes, like the outline. The narrative itself typically unfolds through a personal lens, and is thus considered to be a subjective form of writing.

Persuasive essay

The purpose of the persuasive essay is to provide the audience with a 360-view on the concept idea or certain topic – to persuade the reader to adopt a certain viewpoint. The viewpoints can range widely from why visiting the dentist is important to why dogs make the best pets to why blue is the best color.  Strong, persuasive language is a defining characteristic of this essay type.

The Essay in Art

Several other artistic mediums have adopted the essay as a means of communicating with their audience.  In the visual arts, such as painting or sculpting, the rough sketches of the final product are sometimes deemed essays.  Likewise, directors may opt to create a film essay which is similar to a documentary in that it offers a personal reflection on a relevant issue.  Finally, photographers often create photographic essays in which they use a series of photographs to tell a story, similar to a narrative or a descriptive essay.

Drawing the line – question answered

Components of an Essay

An essay is a piece of writing that is written to provide information about a certain topic or simply to convince the reader. In every effective essay writing , there are three major parts: introduction , body , and essay conclusion .

• The introduction.  This is where the subject or topic is introduced. The big picture, points, and ideas are briefly written here.

How to Write the Introduction Essay?

The introduction is the door to the whole essay outline . It must be convincing enough to get the attention of the readers. The following are the guidelines for writing the introduction of the essay.

• It must contain an attention-getter sentence or statement.
• The introduction must sound interesting to capture the attention of the reader.

What Does the Body of an Essay Contain?

Informative Essay — Purpose, Structure, and Examples

What is informative writing?

Informative writing educates the reader about a certain topic. An informative essay may explain new information, describe a process, or clarify a concept. The provided information is objective, meaning the writing focuses on presentation of fact and should not contain personal opinion or bias.

Informative writing includes description, process, cause and effect, comparison, and problems and possible solutions:

Describes a person, place, thing, or event using descriptive language that appeals to readers’ senses

Explains the process to do something or how something was created

Discusses the relationship between two things, determining how one ( cause ) leads to the other ( effect ); the effect needs to be based on fact and not an assumption

Identifies the similarities and differences between two things; does not indicate that one is better than the other

Details a problem and presents various possible solutions ; the writer does not suggest one solution is more effective than the others

The purpose of an informative essay depends upon the writer’s motivation, but may be to share new information, describe a process, clarify a concept, explain why or how, or detail a topic’s intricacies.

When composing the introductory paragraph(s) of an informative paper, include a hook, introduce the topic, provide background information, and develop a good thesis statement.

If the hook or introduction creates interest in the first paragraph, it will draw the readers’ attention and make them more receptive to the essay writer's ideas. Some of the most common techniques to accomplish this include the following:

Emphasize the topic’s importance by explaining the current interest in the topic or by indicating that the subject is influential.

Use pertinent statistics to give the paper an air of authority.

A surprising statement can be shocking; sometimes it is disgusting; sometimes it is joyful; sometimes it is surprising because of who said it.

An interesting incident or anecdote can act as a teaser to lure the reader into the remainder of the essay. Be sure that the device is appropriate for the informative essay topic and focus on what is to follow.

Directly introduce the topic of the essay.

Provide the reader with the background information necessary to understand the topic. Don’t repeat this information in the body of the essay; it should help the reader understand what follows.

Identify the overall purpose of the essay with the thesis (purpose statement). Writers can also include their support directly in the thesis, which outlines the structure of the essay for the reader.

Informative essay body paragraphs

Each body paragraph should contain a topic sentence, evidence, explanation of evidence, and a transition sentence.

A good topic sentence should identify what information the reader should expect in the paragraph and how it connects to the main purpose identified in the thesis.

Provide evidence that details the main point of the paragraph. This includes paraphrasing, summarizing, and directly quoting facts, statistics, and statements.

Explain how the evidence connects to the main purpose of the essay.

Place transitions at the end of each body paragraph, except the last. There is no need to transition from the last support to the conclusion. A transition should accomplish three goals:

Tell the reader where you were (current support)

Tell the reader where you are going (next support)

Relate the paper’s purpose

Informative essay conclusion

Incorporate a rephrased thesis, summary, and closing statement into the conclusion of an informative essay.

Rephrase the purpose of the essay. Do not just repeat the purpose statement from the thesis.

Summarize the main idea found in each body paragraph by rephrasing each topic sentence.

End with a clincher or closing statement that helps readers answer the question “so what?” What should the reader take away from the information provided in the essay? Why should they care about the topic?

What to See in N.Y.C. Galleries in June

This week in Newly Reviewed, Max Lakin covers Alan Saret’s delicately chaotic sculptures, Jamie Nares’s two-venue retrospective and Robert Irwin’s stuttering panels of teal and smoky brown acrylic.

East Village

In the late 1960s and early ’70s, Alan Saret’s delicately chaotic sculptures and drawings — sensuous tangles of wire and whorls of colored pencil — were part of the cerebral work promoted at Bykert , the short-lived but influential gallery that provided wide latitude to post-Minimalist artists like Brice Marden and Lynda Benglis. Yet even that laxity proved too constraining for Saret, who chafed at being hemmed in, often to the point of self-sabotage. (He supposedly pulled out of a Whitney showcase in 1969 because he didn’t like the title.)

Saret’s allergy to gallery systems led him to search out alternatives. After contributing to the 1971 India Triennial, he hung around for nearly three years, immersing himself in the spiritual self-inquiry. He took to exhibiting out of his studio, and later constructed Ghosthouse, an outdoor mesh shelter in upstate New York that he inhabited for several months.

So it’s a small miracle that a survey of Saret’s works from 1975 to the present currently stretches across Karma’s three galleries. Oracular, kaleidoscopic works on paper combine Saret’s mathematical studies with what appears like religious sacred geometry redolent of the I Ching and the Kabbalah’s Sefirot — intricate compositions thick with color, language, and visual information that spirals and stellates, like schematics for achieving transcendence.

The most disarmingly sublime though are Saret’s “dharanis,” calligraphic gossamer ink drawings of lyrical, gnomic koans — what were once called mantras but are referred to now, in wellness culture, as daily affirmations. For Saret this mode of thinking was not faddish but a deeply felt way of organizing his being. They’re less text art than devotional objects, a reminder that the real art is being alive.

For nearly 50 years the artist Jamie Nares has sped up time and slowed it down, lingering on it or folding it back in on itself. This two-venue retrospective — at MoMA, 40 of Nares’s No Wave and post-Minimalist films from the mid-1970s; and at Kasmin, 100 works on paper made after she traded her Super 8 for a paintbrush — suggest that her concerns have remained constant even as their expression changes.

The most thrilling remains “Pendulum” (1976). Nares suspends a heavy metal sphere on a wire and shoots it from multiple angles — at street level and above, and with the camera duct-taped to it — as it slices through a deserted TriBeCa street for 17 minutes. The sphere flirts with walls and threatens to obliterate fire escapes, a wrecking ball presaging the neighborhood’s impending redevelopment. It is the exact kind of a film a painter would make, the pendulum tracing out its elegant line in the air, a metronome ticking out a visible pulse.

Nares’s 2011 film, “Street” is another one: a continuous, linear gesture, three minutes of footage trawling the streets of the city slowed into a 61-minute tableau of kinetic humanism. It recalls the artist’s untitled 1988 oil on wax paper: an undulating gesture made without breaking contact, the brushstroke as tracking shot. Many of the paper works behave this way, Nares’s thick marks gliding along the surface, inducing, as in her films, a trance-like state. In both the films and drawings, there’s an attempt to locate a still point amid perpetual motion, and the recognition that that impulse is both impossible as it is inevitable.

Robert Irwin

In 1971 Robert Irwin installed a 12-foot acrylic column in the ground floor of Donald Judd’s SoHo studio, a prism positioned to pick up light from the building’s large southern and western windows. Since the early ’60s, Irwin had been pushing the definition of art beyond objecthood, gradually reducing his work of distractions until he stopped producing salable art works. By 1970, he had abandoned his studio in favor of what he called a conditional practice: making subtle, barely perceptible interventions in architecture to to tease out the marvels of visual potential. He viewed his installations merely as tools to induce the real art, which was perception — “to make people conscious of their consciousness.”

A later iteration of that work, “Sculpture/Configuration 2T/3L,” first exhibited at Pace in 2018, is on view in roughly the same spot (the hole bored through the floor 53 years ago remains, never filled). More advanced, formed by two columns of stuttering panels of teal and smoky brown acrylic, it’s beautiful, but its beauty is beside the point. It melts into the background, both there and not there. Sunlight catches a corner or flutters over a faceted edge as you move around it, splicing and refracting SoHo’s thrum, making it new.

The installation’s long run means the quality of natural light will change and so too will the effect. It’s a slow, affecting distillation of Irwin’s philosophy, which remains generously contra the art world’s relentless demand for novelty. Irwin, who died last year , refined an expansive vision, making us aware of the transitory, letting us see what was always there, for as long as we can.

Bill Skarsgård said in an interview with Esquire magazine that the studio behind “It” perhaps didn’t make the best choice in deciding to release the first image of him as the villainous clown Pennywise before filming even got underway on the Stephen King film adaptation. Warner Bros. released the two-part film, which together earned more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

“When you are 26, you don’t feel young at all, but now, looking back at it, I was a kid,” Skarsgård said about taking on the role of Pennywise. “It was fairly early on in my career to take on something that had so many eyeballs and expectations on it.”

“I was so incredibly nervous to start this job, and then the Internet is having so many hateful opinions on the weird, strange look of the thing,” Skarsgård said.

Some horror fans went on the attack against the “It” movie because Pennywise did not look like they expected. Skarsgård said he lost sleep over the backlash as fans made him know that “this looks stupid” and “lame.” The outrage fundamentally changed his perspective as an actor.

“You can only make this performance to please yourself,” Skarsgård said. “It unlocked something in me. And it gave me the confidence that I can take on any challenge. At least, that’s how I feel when I accept these things.”

Warner Bros. had no comment on the matter. “It” was promoted and released under different leadership at the studio.

When the first image of Skarsgård’s Pennywise debuted, he told Entertainment Weekly: “It’s important that we do something fresh and original for this one. It’s purposely not going toward that weird, greasy look.”

“I do not think people are gonna recognize me in it,” Skarsgård told Esquire. “He’s gross…But it is very sexualized. It’s playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you. Hopefully you’ll get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.”

Negro Leagues statistics to be officially integrated into MLB historical record

Telling the story of baseball without the Negro Leagues would paint an incomplete and narrow picture of America’s pastime. Baseball’s history is finally getting a revision.

Negro Leagues statistics will officially become part of Major League historical record on Wednesday. The move comes more than three years after Major League Baseball announced it would be elevating the Negro Leagues to major-league status.

The more than 2,300 players who played in the seven iterations of the Negro Leagues from 1920-1948 will be integrated into MLB's database. The Special Baseball Records Committee of 1969 voted to include the American League, National League, American Association, Union Association, Federal League and Players' League but did not give the Negro Leagues major-league status.

“It's a big day,” Negro League Museum president Bob Kendrick told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday. “The great thing about it is that we’ve been saying that quite a bit over recent days and weeks as it relates to the Negro Leagues. … This is the result of a lot of intensive effort by some incredible historians and researchers who have completely dedicated themselves to trying to do something that people thought probably wasn't possible.”

USA Today's Bob Nightengale first reported the news.

“We are proud that the official historical record now includes the players of the Negro Leagues,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “This initiative is focused on ensuring that future generations of fans have access to the statistics and milestones of all those who made the Negro Leagues possible. Their accomplishments on the field will be a gateway to broader learning about this triumph in American history and the path that led to Jackie Robinson’s 1947 Dodger debut.”

The Negro Leagues statistical review committee, comprised of baseball historians, Negro League experts, former players, researchers and journalists, reviewed data, box scores, statistics and additional information uncovered by Seamheads, RetroSheet and the Elias Sports Bureau.

“We looked for historians, statisticians, and stakeholders who all could be expected to have concern that MLB would get the process and the product right,” John Thorn, MLB's official historian and chairman of the Negro Leagues statistical review committee, told Yahoo Sports this week. “We were not looking for 'like minds' but instead potentially contentious ones.”

What does it mean for great MLB statistics?

One of the biggest questions baseball fans and onlookers will likely have is how MLB has determined what statistics can be used. The Negro Leagues statistical review committee went through decades of box scores and data to find statistics from what was considered league play. The Negro Leagues' schedule usually ran between 60-80 games with another 40-60 games coming in the form of exhibitions. Statistics from what was known as “barnstorming,” or exhibition games, will not be counted toward MLB record totals.

Similar to how MLB determines qualifiers for statistical leaders, a similar formula was used to decide which players qualified for MLB leaderboards.

Negro Leagues legend and Baseball Hall of Famer Josh Gibson will become MLB’s single-season record holder in batting average (.466 in 1943), slugging percentage (.974 in 1937) and OPS (1.474 in 1937). Gibson, who played for the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Homestead Grays, also becomes MLB’s career leader in all three categories. The previous records for slugging and OPS in a season were both held by Barry Bonds. Gibson's career batting average of .372 passes Ty Cobb for the all-time lead, while his career slugging percentage of .718 and OPS of 1.177 take over the previous leader in both categories, Babe Ruth.

It's important to note that Gibson's plaque at the Baseball Hall of Fame says he "hit almost 800 homers" in league and independent ball. While the oral history of Gibson's prolific power helps give context to the player he was, the committee did not include anecdotal evidence, with many of those home runs coming outside of what was deemed league play and wasn't accompanied by box scores.

So while Gibson will have several of his accomplishments now counted as MLB records, he will not be the league leader in career home runs.

Former Negro Leagues players who played in the major leagues, including Willie Mays, Minnie Miñoso, Larry Doby, Jackie Robinson and numerous others will also have their Negro Leagues statistics integrated and updated. The statistics will continue to be reviewed and updated as more data and information is uncovered.

Mays' hit total goes to 3,293, up 10 with stats from his 1948 season with the Birmingham Black Barons

Miñoso joins the 2,000-hit club, gaining 150 hits from his time with the New York Cubans

Jackie Robinson's 49 hits with the Kansas City Monarchs raise his hit total to 1,567

Satchel Paige boosted his win total to 125 with his 28 Negro League victories

In accordance with the rules set by the SBRC in 1969 that states, “For all-time single-season records, there will be no asterisks or official signs shall be used to indicate the number of games scheduled.” New Negro Leagues record holders and additions on MLB leaderboards will not include an asterisk.

MLB will pay tribute to the Negro Leagues on June 20 in a regular-season matchup between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Rickwood Field, which was the home of the Birmingham Black Barons, is considered the oldest professional ballpark in the U.S.

Giving the 'the Negro Leagues history a mainstream voice'

The oral history of the Negro Leagues has lasted for over a hundred years, with players like Gibson becoming larger than life. As new data, documents, box scores and information has been gathered, it has given more tangible evidence to the stories that have been shared.

Kendrick has been one of the biggest advocates for the Negro Leagues being recognized by Major League Baseball and informing old and new fans on the impact the Negro Leagues had on baseball’s history.

“No sport holds onto its history the way baseball does,” Kendrick told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday. “It is by far the most romanticized sport of them all, and it’s a sport where we constantly compare the stars of the past with the stars today. And the unified efforts that we've embarked on over the last several years, and I'll go back to last year with the inclusion of the Negro Leagues into MLB The Show 23 [video game], these things have given the Negro Leagues history a mainstream voice.

“What we’ve found is that young baseball fans not only want to learn about the Negro Leagues, but they’ve fallen in love with the Negro Leagues. And as a museum, a cultural institution, that's exactly what we wanted to have happen.”

Tuesday’s news amplifies another baseball chapter that was once ignored. The addition of Negro Leagues statistics to MLB's historical record does not take away from MLB's history. It simply adds. The history of baseball can continue to be told in a more complete and broader way as new generations of fans learn about the game.

“I believe that the past is a living, breathing thing that informs every present moment,” Thorn said. “No sport is more attuned to its history and its heroes of old than baseball, and now we have a chance to tell the story of the game, and the nation, inclusively.”

T-Mobile acquires US Cellular assets for $4.4 billion as carrier aims to boost rural connectivity

T-Mobile announced it will acquire virtually all of U.S. Cellular’s wireless operations in a $4.4 billion deal that hopes to provide better connection to people in underserved, rural parts of the country.

As part of the acquisition, which was announced in a press release on Tuesday, T-Mobile will acquire U.S. Cellular’s wireless operations, wireless customers, stores and certain specified spectrum assets.

Approximately 30% of U.S. Cellular's spectrum assets are included in the deal, the company announced in a release.

U.S. Cellular will still own its towers and T-Mobile will lease space on a minimum of 2,100 additional towers.

“As customers from both companies will get more coverage and more capacity from our combined footprint, our competitors will be forced to keep up – and even more consumers will benefit," said T-Mobile's CEO, Mike Sievert, in a statement.

Sievert described the deal as a way the company is "shaking up wireless for the good of consumers."

The deal is expected to close in mid-2025, T-Mobile announced.

T-Mobile hopes the transaction creates more choice for consumers in areas with "expensive and limited plans from AT&T and Verizon," or those with little to no broadband connectivity. It adds that the deal will provide "best-in-class connectivity to rural Americans."

According to the Pew Research Center, a quarter of Americans struggle with high-speed internet. This need for broadband internet was highlighted during the pandemic, states Delmarva Now, a part of the USA TODAY Network.

The lack of broadband internet can even shut people out of possible jobs, reports Forbes .

Option to stay on their current plans

The press release states that U.S. Cellular customers can choose to stay on their current plans or transfer to a T-Mobile plan at no cost. They will receive new benefits like streaming and free international data roaming.

However, some internet users have voiced concerns about their payment potentially increasing.

"They said 'keep' (the same plan) didn't say anything about 'at the same price,'" said one Reddit user.

However, another user said they are still paying the same amount and haven't seen a change since T-Mobile acquired their previous provider, Sprint.

USA TODAY reached out to T-Mobile for comment on possible price increases but has not heard back yet.

Deal cost breakdown

According to the press release, T-Mobile will pay $4.4 billion for the acquisition.

The transaction will be completed with a combination of cash and $2 billion of debt that will be assumed by T-Mobile.

"To the extent any debtholders do not participate in the exchange, their bonds will continue as obligations of U.S. Cellular and the cash portion of the purchase price will be correspondingly increased," states the release.
