2. Presentation

7. Dictating time!

5. It is time to multiply our lexicon!

4. How about testing ourselves!

3. Open your mind and let it flies!

6. Of course, I have just done it!

7. Toy story!

5. Let’s do it!

4. Let’s review the topic!

  • Means of transport
  • To learn some vocabulary about means of transport in a low intermediate level.
  • To express ideas about means of transport that they have already used/ridden/driven and those that they have not used/ridden/driven yet.
  • To continue learning vocabulary about curious and new means of transport in a low intermediate level
  • To express ideas about means of transport that they have used/ridden/driven…since/for “expression of time” and/or “clauses”; moreover, questions with “ever”
  • To create a virtual presentation using adverbs and the present perfect tense in a low intermediate level
  • To expose the new prototype transport that they have created or drawn with their talent by using their imaginations and empowering their subconscious mind through positive affirmations.

First, we are going to do a dynamic as presentation where we will be able to use some topics that will be studied in this session:This is my example:Hi! I am “Alexánder González”, but everybody calls me: “Xánder” and I am “47”. In my life, I have ridden “a horse”, however I have never driven “a car”.

Let’s speak a bit!

In order to start this session, let’s apply a roulette, so that each one of you are going to have a turn of reading a paragraph in three texts!

Let’s READ A WHILE!

Electric Rideables, (2022). 17 COOLEST Electric Personal Transportation Devices. [video]. YouTube. Obtenido de https://youtu.be/GlEFsz8Tk-8?si=3SQj9YdtC-dgH2mg

After watching this video and, of course, using imagination and activating your subconscious mind, you will have to choose a mean of transport that you would like to improve, transform or change.

Keep on dreaming awake!

https://www.voki.com/

What about creating an Avatar!

To start this session, we will have a game where the player (each one of you) will have to classify the means of transport into aquatic, terrestrial, and aerial groups. The winner will be the student who has less time in the leaderboard.

SHALL WE PLAY?

Here, you will use the piece of paper with the other supplies requested at the previously session, so that begin drawing that new prototype transport with all the changes and improvements that are needed to do.

Open your mind and let it flies!

The purpose of this exercise is to activate your prior-knowledge doing an activity online.

In this activity, you need to complete a chart with information from an online article called: 50 Types of Transport from around the WorldThe line number one in the chart, is an example mine.

Could we analyze its characteristics?

The objective in this activity is to use the information from one of the five means of transport chosen in the before exercise and apply it in an oral exercise.

I can do it myself!

Do you think in all places or cities all around the world have used the same means of transport that you have used in your city or country?

THINK TWICE!

This activity has as an objective to review and strengthen your knowledge about the grammar topic and means of transport vocabulary.

Let’s review the topic!

British Council. (2019). Mini English Lessons: For and Since. [Video]. YouTube. Obtenido de https://youtu.be/tNgOWWpUokc?si=CG4ES1Qot5KAZIPa

Turn on the tv!

You need to listen carefully to me and also, you have to be writing the sentences you hear on your notebooks.

DICTATING TIME!

At this time, you are going to show us a mean of transport toy and express fluently information about it, using the topics learned in these three sessions

  • TechJoint. (2021). 12 Newest Personal Transportation Vehicles You Must See. [video]. YouTube. Obtenido de https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO42tvChmOE

Think about it!

AlphaONEcars. (2023). Top 10 Most Expensive Luxury SUV 2023. [Video]. YouTube. Obtenido de https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHWJy4ZShAE

This exercise is about speaking skill and empowering your subconscious mind.

Of course, I have just done it!

VIRTUAL WALL

What have you learnt with this exercise?

Have you thought of selling?

How long have you dedicated it?

You must make a virtual presentation with 10 slideshows using any software you want to. The virtual presentation must have your new prototype transport and the answers for these 7 questions:

What changes or improvements have you made it?

Why have you named it that way?

How have you decided to name it?

Which mean of transport have you chosen for improving, transforming or changing?

LET'S DO IT!

Please, evaluate this workshop!

LESSON OVERVIEW

This free ESL lesson plan on transport has been designed for adults and young adults at an intermediate (B1/B2) to advanced (C1/C2) level and should last around 45 to 60 minutes for one student.

Somehow or another, in the modern world, everyone must move from A to Z. This may be popping out to the shops, commuting to work, or flying to an exotic location for a holiday. To take these journeys, people have the choice of a wide selection of transport, whether that be a bike, car, bus or even just walking. All of these methods of transport bring with them their own advantages and disadvantages, and not all of them are environmentally friendly. In this ESL lesson plan on transport, students will have the opportunity to discuss and express their opinions on issues such as the transport they use regularly, their opinions on driving, and how their thoughts on public transport.

This lesson plan could also be used with your students to debate these issues for World Car-Free Day , which takes place in September. For more lesson plans on international days and important holidays, see the  calendar of world days  to plan your classes for these special occasions.

For advice on how to use this English lesson plan and  other lesson plans  on this site, see the  guide for ESL teachers .

PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES

Reading activity Before the English class, send the following article to the students and ask them to read it while making a list of any new vocabulary or phrases they find (explain any the students don’t understand in the class):

GoGet | Transport trends that will change the future (and some that won’t)

The article makes a number of predictions for future trends that will change transportation, including shared transport, self-driving cars, and homeworking. It also suggests a number of trends that won’t matter for future transport, including owning a car, flying cars, and hyperloops. At the start of the class, hold a brief discussion about what the students thought about the article. What do they think about the issues raised in the article? Do they agree with what was said? Can they think of any ways they might disagree with the content of the article?

Video activity To save time in class for the conversation activities, the English teacher can ask the students to watch the video below and answer the listening questions in Section 3 of the lesson plan at home. There are intermediate listening questions and advanced listening questions so teachers can decide which would be more appropriate for their students. Check the answers in the class.

The video for this class is called “Why American public transit is so bad” by Vox which looks at some of the historical reasons why it is so difficult to survive in the United States without a car.

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

The focus in the class is on conversation in order to help improve students’ fluency and confidence when speaking in English as well as boosting their vocabulary.

This lesson opens with a short discussion about the article the students read before the class. Next, the students can give their opinion on the quote at the beginning of the lesson plan – what they think the quote means and if they agree with it. This is followed by an initial discussion on the topic including popular forms of transport in the students’ cities, which methods of transport are considered safe or dangerous, and how the roads are in their cities.

After this, students will learn some vocabulary connected with transport such as rush hour , traffic jam and commute . This vocabulary has been chosen to boost the students’ knowledge of less common vocabulary that could be useful for preparing for English exams like IELTS or TOEFL. The vocabulary is accompanied by a cloze activity and a speaking activity to test the students’ comprehension of these words.

If the students didn’t watch the video before the class, they can watch it after the vocabulary section and answer the listening questions. Before checking the answers, ask the students to give a brief summary of the video and what they thought about the content.

Finally, there is a more in-depth conversation about transportation. In this speaking activity, students will talk about issues such as how their cities are for riding a bike, the pros and cons of public transport, and what the transport of the future will be like.

After the class, students will write about their opinion of transport. This could be a short paragraph or a longer piece of writing depending on what level the student is at. The writing activity is designed to allow students to practise and improve their grammar with the feedback from their teacher. For students who intend to take an international English exam such as IELTS or TOEFL, there is an alternative essay question to practise their essay-writing skills.

For example:

Transportation Prepositions in English –

“ By “ – is also used for transportation environment or the surface like; sea , road , air – these are transportation. So even when you’re not talking a particular vehicle in particular, you can also use the preposition “by” to talk about transportation surface.

They are going to go by air.

So, we are using the preposition “by” when talking about general ways of travel. You can also use another transportation surface that’s “rail”.

Now let’s have a look at with preposition “in” related to transportation. After several rules in or on are used to talk about a specific vehicle like nothing in general but something in specific.

Let’s think about the vehicles that we can sit in, we cannot stand in that vehicle but a vehicle that we can only sit inside such as:

In a Car, in a truck, in a helicopter, in a taxi, in a rowboat etc. You can not stand in this vehicle especially when they are in motion, so the vehicles that you can sit inside, you will end up using the preposition in.
