These are some terms independent reviewers have used to describe Susquehanna’s creative writing program, one of the most rigorous and successful undergraduate programs in the nation.

When The Princeton Review recently recognized Susquehanna University as one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduates, surveyed Susquehanna students pointed to a variety of academic offerings that make Susquehanna stand out, including the university’s “top-notch” creative writing program.

Since one in 12 students at Susquehanna is a creative writing major, we have dedicated creative writing housing, poetry slams, seven student-run publications, and frequent late-night literary gatherings.

From Day One, your work will be critiqued by professional, published authors — who are also your professors — and you’ll have plenty of chances to interact one-on-one with them.

With separate introductory courses in poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction, you’ll build your unique approach to writing on a strong foundation. Add to this: the opportunity to take courses in performance and activist writing, graphic non-fiction, and screen-writing. You’ll also take intermediate and advanced creative writing courses along with literature courses that teach writers how to read for craft and technique.

Writing is a skill valued around the world and in all professions. Our program lays the foundation for a lifelong career in fields like advertising, corporate communications, graphic design, editing, education, journalism, law, religious ministry, or technical writing.

Our alumni network of more than 700 trained writers stands ready to help you make valuable connections in any number of fields. We also were recently ranked one of the top writing programs in Pennsylvania, thanks in part to graduate employment rates and earnings.

Many of our writers choose to attend graduate school after Susquehanna, and almost all who apply are admitted and receive generous teaching assistantships.

About Susquehanna’s Writers Institute

THE WRITERS INSTITUTE

Susquehanna University’s Writers Institute provides students with the opportunity to receive nationally-recognized undergraduate training in all forms of creative writing through its Creative Writing Major .  Students work closely in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, editing, and the technology of publishing with faculty who are widely-published authors.  Small workshops and one-on-one instruction are central to the Creative Writing Major, which is enriched by the following programs:

The Raji-Syman Visiting Writers Series : The Writers Institute has received a significant gift from an outside donor that will fund a very large portion of this year’s visiting writers series.  To honor that contribution, the series has been named the Raji-Syman Visiting Writers Series. Seven writers are invited (for a long-term stay) to visit campus to perform a reading. Some have had lunch with students and visited their classes. All readings from visiting writers are free and open to the public. Recent visitors have been Tobias Wolff, Andre Dubus III, Li-Young Lee, Billy Collins, Sharon Olds, Robert Boswell, Jayne Anne Phillips, Louise Gluck, Eavan Boland, Richard Bausch, Dagoberto Gilb, Ted Conover, Tom Perrotta, Carolyn Forche, Sue Miller, Zach Savich, Ann Pancake, Mary Jo Bang, and Richard Rodriguez.

The Susquehanna Review, Essay, and RiverCraft :  Three distinct magazines are edited and produced by students—a national magazine featuring work from undergraduate writers from across the country, a nonfiction magazine, and a magazine of fiction and poetry from Susquehanna student writers.

Endowed Writing Prizes and Scholarships : Ten writing scholarships of $17,500 per year ($70,000 total) are available to incoming writing majors based on the quality of their writing portfolios.  Prizes of as much as $1000 are awarded to students chosen each year on the basis of work published in our student magazines and in senior portfolios.

The Student Reading and Chapbook Series : Ten student readings are presented each year.  Every senior writing major edits and produces a chapbook that showcase his or her best work.

Internships : Susquehanna’s Creative Writing Majors have had recent internships with national magazines, advertising agencies, professional writing organizations, nonprofit foundations, newspapers, public relations firms, film producers, radio stations, churches, businesses, and schools.

Graduate Programs : Within the past six years, Writing Majors have been accepted with fellowships or assistantships to such outstanding graduate writing programs as Iowa, Columbia, Hollins, Indiana, Washington, Houston, Arizona, Massachusetts, Johns Hopkins, Pittsburgh, Boston University, Ohio State, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Wilmington, George Mason, Rutgers, Mississippi, and The New School.

In addition, the Writers Institute sponsors Writing Action Day , which brings 150 high school seniors to campus for workshops in all genres of writing.  Each summer, the Institute offers the one-week Advanced Writers Workshops for High School Students.  Participants live on campus and concentrate on fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction, working closely with published writers.

The Writing Faculty have published thirty-four books of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, many of which have been used in classrooms throughout the United States.  They have won major book prizes such as the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships, Pushcart Prizes, and magazine prizes.  They regularly publish their work in such periodicals as Harper’s, Newsday, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Paris Review, American Scholar, The Georgia Review, and Poetry .  Their work has been syndicated in newspapers throughout the United States and heard on National Public Radio.

Activated 1953 in Stepanshchino, Moscow Oblast - initially as the 1945th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment for Special Use and from 1955 as the 635th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment for Special Use.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Susquehanna University announced faculty awards for research, teaching and advising at its 166th commencement.

Faculty awards were given to James Briggs, professor of psychology, the John C. Horn Award for Distinguished Scholarship and Creative Activity; Peggy Peeler, professor of biology, the Donald D. Housley Teaching Award; and Lauren Smith, lecturer in management and marketing, the Lawrence A. Lemons Distinguished Academic Advising Award.

John C. Horn Award for Distinguished Scholarship and Creative Activity

Briggs joined the faculty at Susquehanna University in 2011. His scholarly interests in the environmental and neurobiological underpinnings of memory formation, memory retention and amnesia have resulted in several publications, including eight with undergraduate student co-authors. Briggs’ nominators highlighted his leadership as department head, including his mentorship of new faculty members, his collaborations with other departments, and his work on a Middle States Reaccreditation Subcommittee and multiple university committees.

Briggs earned his bachelor’s degree from West Liberty State College followed by his master’s degree and doctorate in experimental psychology from Kent State University.

The John C. Horn Award for Distinguished Scholarship and Creative Activity memorializes a former long-time member and chairperson of the Board of Directors of the university. The award recognizes a faculty member for outstanding scholarship and conscientious service to the university. The recipient presents a public lecture in the following academic year.

Donald D. Housley Teaching Award

Peeler joined the faculty at Susquehanna University in 1989. Her nominators lauded her role in improving the learning communities of her department and Susquehanna as a whole. They highlighted her efforts outside of her classes in mentoring junior faculty, running a special program for first-generation students, organizing Break Through conference sessions, and her leadership of the Women in STEM program. Her students have described her as one of the best, and someone who provides an engaging environment where students thrive.

Peeler earned her bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College, followed by her doctorate from Duke University.

The Donald D. Housley Teaching Award recognizes a former distinguished member of the faculty who served from 1967 to 2003, when he retired as the Charles B. Degenstein Professor Emeritus of History.  

Lawrence A. Lemons Distinguished Advising Award

Smith joined the Susquehanna faculty in 2020. Her students described her as an advisor whose work extends far beyond academic advising, encompassing roles in traditional advising, internship advising, co-curricular advising, hidden advising and more. As the internship advisor for the Sigmund Weis School of Business, Smith streamlined and simplified the process for both students and faculty and has advised students in a diverse range of opportunities, including both domestic and international internships.

Smith earned her bachelor’s degree from Susquehanna University in 2013, followed by her Master of Business Administration from Indiana University in 2019.

The Lawrence A. Lemons Distinguished Advising Award memorializes a master teacher, public school leader, and devoted advisor to students who served the youth of the Nebraska Panhandle for more than 50 years.
