When you see the words "business plan" you might immediately think of the traditional kind of plan that requires things like market analyses, organizational charts, and detailed financial projections.

Don't panic!

We're not talking about writing a colossal formal business plan. As a craft business owner, you probably don't need a formal business plan.

You do require a roadmap designed for the needs of a handmade business to help you:

  • create products shoppers will love
  • meet important deadlines (like craft show application closing dates)
  • set smart goals
  • and use your time productively

Research craft trends for 2022

In December, companies like Etsy and Pinterest release trend reports for the upcoming year. January a great time to dig into some of these reports, see what customers might be searching for in the coming year, and decide if and how you want to reflect some of those trends in your own business.

I follow several companies that publish fashion and decor trends predictions and share their reports on Pinterest, so you can find them quickly.

4. Decide if you want to reflect any of the trend predictions for 2022 in your business

Do current trends fit with your brand? Would embracing certain trends advance your craft business plans and goals? You'll need to determine for yourself the right balance between trendy and classic for your company.

5. Decide how you will reflect 2022 trends in your business

If you do want to embrace a trend or two, you'll need to decide how that will look. Will you incorporate hot colors? design motifs? a specific type of product? a particular frame of mind or philosophy?

Of course, you can reflect trends in your product design, but there are also other ways to embrace trends. You could reflect trends in your craft booth merchandising, your product packaging, or your communication with customers as well.

Set realistic goals

Realistic, motivating goals that are in line with your values should be at the heart of your craft business plan.

A business plan is a road map to get to a specific destination. Your goals are the destination.

Time spent reflecting on your core goals and values will help ensure you make plans, decisions, and commitments throughout the year that will lead you to create the type of business you really want.

6. Define your priorities

You can't possibly do it all, so you need to decide what's really important. What do you want to do extraordinarily well, and what are you willing to let go of to achieve that goal?

If you  set compelling priorities , you can actually accomplish more by doing less but doing it better.

7. Consider where you want to be long term

When you know where you want your business to be next year, you'll be able to make better decisions about how to invest your time.

With your  ideal business goals  in mind, you can work out the steps you need to take to get from where you are to where you want to be. You'll be better equipped to make strategic decisions to work on projects that support your vision instead of bouncing from day to day on tasks that don't lead to your big picture goal.

8. Tie your goals to actions, not outcomes

For the most part, you can control whether you follow through on a commitment to action. You can not control the outcome. So if you want to stay motivated to accomplish something big, your goal needs to revolve around actions, not outcomes.

The  SMART goal setting  technique is all you need to set realistic, motivating goals that are tied to actions.

9. BONUS: Reassess your values, priorities, and goals

If you're up for investing some time to make sure you're really building a business that's in line with your values, you need to read Busy: How to Thrive in a World of too Much by Tony Crabbe.

I've read stacks of popular books about setting and achieving goals.

Honestly, I didn't like many of them.

Most other books on the subject assume you have total control over vast swaths of time. You just need to learn to use all of that time well.

I don't have vast swaths of wide open time. I'm willing to bet you don't either.

That's why Busy is the one book about priorities and goal setting that completely blew me away.

The book centers around the assumption that your time is finite and precious. It completely changed my perspective and transformed how I approach life and business goal planning.

Build effective work habits

What's at the heart of achieving your smart goals and following through on your craft business plan? 

Habits will get you further than willpower. Willpower is finite and requires emotional effort and energy. Habits, once established, happen automatically.

Research shows that habits account for a full 45% of our daily behaviors ! If you can consciously develop more constructive habits, you could potentially get 45% of your day right automatically.

10. Determine the habit you want to build

Remember, you can't do everything, and often you can accomplish more by doing less. So choose one or two habits that will have the biggest impact on the goals you set for your business.

Commit to building those one or two most impactful habits.

Stay focused.

Don't let yourself get distracted by other enchanting ideas. You can add more habits in the future once the first one is more firmly established.

11. Use proven habit building strategies

Habits work on a predictable cycle:

  • cue (the trigger)
  • routine (the established behavior)
  • and reward (the benefit from the routine)

If you can recognize and redirect the  habit cycles  that drive your own routines, you have a much better chance at changing them successfully.

12. Manage your motivation

Even with the best habit cycle in place, you'll need a degree of motivation to persist through inevitable low points. Your reasons to continue have to outweigh your reasons to stop.

If you find your motivation is slipping, use some of these strategies to  boost self motivation .

13. BONUS: Learn habit building strategies that Suit You

There's another book in the achievement genre that has actually been extremely helpful to me — Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin.

The book is written around the premise that were are all different, so different types of habit building strategies will work for different types of people.  It shows you how to use practical, actionable strategies that suit you and work with your natural inclinations, not against them.

If you want to take a more comprehensive look at habit building, I think you'll find a lot of value in the strategies that are taught in Better Than Before

Research juried art shows & studio tours

If you're new to selling at craft fairs, January might seem shockingly early to start planning for shows that won't happen for another 6-11 months.

Many shows open up the application process several months in advance. If you want to start selling at a few craft shows this year, you need to start planning sooner rather than later.

14. Find craft shows & studio tours that interest you

Your local arts association or crafts guild will be an excellent resource for finding shows in your area. They probably even publish an annual  craft show directory  for your area. 

15. Note important deadlines and application requirements

A craft show directory is a great starting point for finding shows in your area, but occasionally craft show directories contain mistakes. When you check deadlines, go directly to the show's website so you can be sure you're getting important information directly from the source.

Important craft show dates include:

  • when applications will be available / the first day you can submit your application
  • the application deadline
  • when those who are accepted will be notified
  • booth fees due date
  • show date(s)

While you're checking deadlines, you can also look for other important information about the craft shows that interest you such as:

  • organizer contact information
  • how to apply
  • where to get an application
  • application requirements (be sure to check the requirements for product and booth photos)
  • show location
  • any unusual show rules
  • information about past show attendance if available
  • any information available about types of vendors (e.g. Is the show for handmade items only? Are there limits on the number of vendors allowed in each category?)

All of that information will help you to  assess each craft show  and decide which ones you'd like to attend. 

Art studio tour  organizers also typically start accepting applications for both spring and fall tours quite early in the year. If you think you might like to participate in your local studio tour, start your research now. Your arts association will have information about that event as well.

16. Get fabulous photos of your products

Your product photography can make or break your craft show application. Whether you hire a pro or take the photos yourself,  craft product photography  is no place to cut corners in your juried art show applications, particularly if you're applying to more competitive shows or if you're applying to a competitive category like jewelry or painting.

You might not need to start your applications in January. That will depend on the deadlines for shows you'd like to attend.

Just don't wait until the last minute to  apply to juried art shows  that interest you. Complete your applications thoroughly, carefully, and in a timely manner.

18. Plan to attend as a customer if you won't be a vendor

There may be shows that interest you but you can't attend this year because you're not ready for them, or you were not accepted. Put those show dates in your calendar, and plan to attend them as a customer if at all possible.

You'll be able to check out the vendors, see whose booths are full of paying customers, and learn what works so you'll be ready to apply to those shows in coming years.

Product first, campaign second

So with all of those positive benefits of the platform figured out, we wanted to make sure we had the product itself in the right place before we launched.

We’ve been working on Salsa for a long time now and wouldn’t have felt comfortable revealing the ability to pay for it until we hit a very important milestone. We had a final prototype.

Doing all of the sourcing and actual production is secondary—there was absolutely no way we could have gone public without people being able to see real photos (and touch in person) a functioning prototype.

This meant that we had to do all of the development before we ever saw a cent.

Finding backers in the real world

We launched the product at our annual Booth Summit, which is a convention for photobooth owners to get together and learn from experts in the field. Launching a product in a receptive environment is generally considered to be a good idea. The same was definitely true for us!

We had a crowd of people who had just told us they were dedicated to growing their business… and we had the chance to offer them a way to do just that. I really can’t emphasize enough how important it is to make products that matter for people who will care about them.

This opportunity to see the product in real life was an essential component for our launch, but it might not be the same for you. I think it just shows how essential having a great prototype is. People love to touch and feel what they’re buying, if you’re talking about something physical… you should be able to show a prototype before you ask for money.

Building excitement with even the smallest backers.

We knew that we wanted to have a ton of incentives for early backers so that they’d be rewarded for taking a leap of faith on a new photobooth.

We’re obviously not making a whole lot of money on that first $1999 tier. But it enabled people to be part of something fun.

Every $1999 backer is always going to be able to say, not just that they got a great deal, but that they were one of the first to get on board. It means a lot more than a discount code expiring—just look at how frustrated people are on Twitter when a limited stock of rewards is secretly gobbled up.

Kickstarter doesn’t reveal the names of backers, but it humanizes them. And it just adds to the fun of getting your own spot! Even for someone backing now, they’re able to say that they were an early adopter.

Delivering on our promise

One of the most common critiques of Kickstarter items is that they either never show up or that they take years. I wanted to make sure that our timeline was easy to deliver and also reasonable.

Nobody deserves to wait two years for your product after they pay for it. I felt like we needed to offer a much quicker turnaround than that. We launched on Black Friday 2018 with an estimated delivery of April 2019.

That’s under 6 months and much lower than the average Kickstarter! The most important thing is that we will be able to meet that timeline. You can’t go around promising delivery dates and missing them, this isn’t a consumer product.

Anytime you’re working with the events industry you have to be very transparent and up front about timelines. A bride who books a photobooth needs it to show up on her wedding day. It’s non-negotiable!

How Do I Pay Myself As A Small Business Owner?

Most entrepreneurs start a business to do something they love- but at the end of the day, you still have bills to pay (maybe now more than ever).

  • Take out a reasonable amount that allows you to live comfortably but also sets your business up for success
  • Consider the number of hours you are working weekly + the type of duties you are performing.
  • Set your salary based on your industry-standard, location, and profits (or projected profits)
  • Look at your P&L statement : Deduct your own pay from that amount. This is important so you can first tackle important business expenses, and then pay yourself from the amount leftover.
  • Pick a payroll schedule (and stick to it)! In the US, it's most common to pay yourself and employees twice a month.

When determining the price of your , you'll want to create goals for revenue + how much profit you want your handcraft products business to make.

This process is simpler than you may think:

  • Think about your breakeven cost (by completing the above step).

First objective: profitability

Our profitability is OK at this point but definitely not where it should be yet. To this day I have not paid myself a regular salary yet...and it’s been 4 years!

The problem is not the cost of goods which are well under 20% of sales, which is good by any standard. The problem is fulfillment costs. In 2018 we transitioned from our first fulfillment company to a much bigger company. We did this because we wanted to provide faster shipment speeds and a better quality of packaging. In hindsight, we chose a company which would have been more suitable for a larger company with bigger volumes. We ended up being tied in with some pretty large minimum monthly payments. So currently fulfillment costs are currently around 45% of sales...way too high.

We are now looking to transit to another fulfillment center. Our target is to get our fulfillment costs down to around 30% of sales which I believe from what I have researched, is possible.

Just to be clear, when I say fulfillment that includes transportation costs also - FedEx, USPS, etc. Not just storage, picking, and packing. I am pretty sure that it is possible to get fulfillment costs down even lower, and I suspect that some large pro sellers on amazon.com work with around 20-25% of sales.

So our target P+L for 2020 looks something like this:

  • Cost of goods, including inbound freight and clearance - around 22% of sales.
  • Fulfillment - around 30% of sales.
  • Digital Advertising & Promotion - around 15% of sales.
  • Other marketing and office costs, including salary costs - around 10% of sales.
  • That would leave us around 23% of sales - enough to pay me a liveable salary and for the company to make a profit and finance future growth.
That's the first objective for 2020: to right-size the P+L so that we are profitable at our current sales level

With my background in design, I was able to mock up a few logos and got feedback from folks. I landed on the current design. I also wanted the names of the fragrances to be positive adjectives and imagined how someone would feel by wearing the different scents. And that’s how the scent names Bravado, Brio, and Vanguard were born. I then designed the labels that would have our logo, scent name, ingredients, and ounces. I iterated a few times, printed them on black on white paper in my home printer, and mocked them up by taping them to the tin lids.

I found ingredients, formulas, suppliers that had the materials and equipment that I would need by searching on the internet. Once I had the basics, I ordered stuff to make my job easier as I went along. I hadn’t designed a point-of-sale box but I wanted to create a box that looked kind of like a cigar box. The initial brand was more crafty and rustic. I worked with a few woodworkers to create the best version of the box that wouldn’t be so expensive for a store to buy.

Once I finished designing and had products with the actual labels, I used my iPhone 3GS, took product shots, and edited them in Photoshop ready for printing line sheets and marketing.

To get started, all you need to do is pick up a pen and paper and start drawing - or if you are working on a virtual/software product this can be a diagram that outlines the user interface or experience.

Decide your supplier type

You'll want to identify the type of supplier you are looking for.

If you want to start a line of unique products, then you have two basic options: you can make them yourself, or you can find a manufacturer to work with that creates custom formulations for their clients.

I knew that I was trying to build a larger-scale business and that the home-made model wasn’t right for me, so I had to find the right manufacturing partner. It took a lot of research, phone calls, and emails before I found the laboratory that met my needs.

I wanted to create unique products (as opposed to private label), so I worked with the manufacturer’s chemist who specializes in skin care formulations. This process takes some time!

First, you have to tell the chemist what kind of product you’re looking for , the ingredients that you want to include or leave out, and what you want the final product to look like/feel like/smell like, etc.

Then, the manufacturer sends you the first sample , you try it out or give it to others to try, and then provide feedback for revisions. In my case, the first two products came together fairly easily because I only needed to make small changes to stock formulations.

There are many, many rules and regulations around cosmetics and skin care products. If you want to sell products that contain FDA regulated ingredients then you have to register and get a permit.

My products aren’t FDA regulated, so I didn’t have to go through this step, but I did have to be aware of the many guidelines and standards around labeling and safety warnings. Some people hire a lawyer to help them through this process, but my manufacturer was able to guide me through the regulatory process.

The entire process, from researching labs to work with to having the first finished products shipped out to me, took around six months.

Purchasing Inventory For Your Handcraft Products Business

When first starting out, it's important to start small with your overhead to get a gauge for what people want.

Just remember - if you order a line of items that don't sell, it's nearly impossible to recoup the money lost.

Buying the right inventory takes research and planning in order to get it right.

  • Identify your target audience : Identify the age, gender, annual income that you will be selling to. This is a defining factor in ordering the right inventory that will sell.
  • Research your competition : Conduct market research and identify the different types of styles, price points, and materials being used. This will help you see what's trending and ways that you can improve/stay ahead of the competition.
  • Create an inventory wishlist : Identify what you need for the launch of your business and create a budget that you will stay within. Remember, it's okay to start small.
  • Find a supplier Make sure to first compare prices and analyze different options.

Since people weren’t searching for the words “solid cologne” at the time and there weren’t the advertising options that Google and Facebook currently offer, I had to develop a way to acquire customers and wanted to do so without investing too much money given I didn’t know whether I had a viable product.

My launch was a two-prong approach. I wanted to launch online so anyone in the US could order. I also wanted to get into stores for distribution and because wholesale seemed to make sense to me especially with a novel product like solid cologne. I looked online for the best way to set up an online store. I stumbled upon Shopify and that’s who I’ve used since the beginning.

For my wholesale strategy, I developed a list of over 100 of the hottest men’s boutique shops in the country and called and/or emailed every one of them. Many asked for samples and quite a few of those became our retail partners. In a matter of months, I went from one store to almost 25 stores nationwide. I finally had proof that I created a viable product that people wanted to buy.

For my online strategy, I contacted a few high-end, men’s blogs and offered free samples in exchange for a review. Most of them published stellar reviews of the solid colognes and I began to see sales activity pick up on the site. That attracted many more bloggers and other press inquiries reaching out to review the solid colognes.

Reviews from blogs and customers gave Alfred Lane the social proof needed to partner with larger online retailers. And those partnerships brought in more media coverage, magazine articles, video reviews, stores inquiring about carrying our solid colognes, and thus, more revenue.

Get Press Coverage For Your Handcraft Products Business

Here are a few ways you can get press for your business:

Press releases:

Press releases are a great way to share big announcements or news, but in order to get any traction, you'll need to find a way to make your press release stand out amongst others.

Try to convey a story that really matters, not just to you, but to the reporter and to their audience.

Here are some things to consider when submitting a press release:

  • Craft a catchy subject (keep it short and sweet).
  • Acknowledge the journalist's past work and interests - this is key!
  • Include the main point of the story in the first paragraph, heck, even the first sentence. Reporters want to hear the juice first and foremost.
  • Focus on the facts and try to limit the amount of jargon used.
  • Pitch yourself! Help them put a face to the story.
  • Make sure your topic is newsworthy. If it's not, find a way to!
  • Try not to include any attachments of your release!

Email is one of the most effective and preferred way to send your press release, so as long as you keep your pitch brief, interesting and personalized (no cold emails), you should stand a chance!

Get Press Using HARO

HARO, otherwise known as "Help a Reporter Out" is an outlet for journalists to source upcoming stories and opportunities for media coverage.

The best part is, HARO is free to use! There are, of course, premium versions you can purchase, but the free version is still an accessible way to get press.

Once you set up an account, HARO essentially will email you based on stories (that are relevant to you) that need to be covered where you will then have a chance to essentially "bid on the story."

Here are some tips when crafting your pitch:

  • Discuss your experience and expertise in the space. Make sure it's obvious why you're relevant to this story.
  • Answer the question in 3-4 sentences. Try and be as direct as possible
  • Offer to provide the reporter with more information and make sure to give them your contact info

Planning a publicity stunt is an effective and quick way to raise awareness for your brand and gain some traction from the press.

If you're looking to plan a stunt, the objective should be to be bold and create something memorable

However, being bold has a fine line - it's important that you consider the timing of your stunt to ensure you don't come off insensitive or unethical. For example, timing may not be in your favor if you plan something during the general election, or in most recent cases, a global pandemic.

In order to measure the success of your stunt, it's important that you first determine your end goal, for example:

  • There are roughly 100 million thoroughly committed prime customers, so you're bound to tap into new business
  • Can help grow your business exponentially and reach new audiences
  • You may encounter some "copycats" and counterfeit products
  • Amazon owns the relationship with the customer (you lose control over product reviews + customer service)
  • If you already have a low-markup, amazon may not wrth your while and you could end up losing money
  • Commissions and listing fees are high - it's easy to lose control of your offering

Social Media Advertising is one of the leading ways to get the word out when it comes to handcraft products business.

There are various different Social Media platforms available to you. Some may be more critical for your marketing efforts than others, however, it's important to have an understanding of what's out there and available to you.

Let's talk about a few of the main platforms and what makes them unique:

  • Facebook Advertising - more than 2 billion monthly users. Facebook is the best for lead generation + capturing email addresses for e-commerce businesses.
  • Instagram Advertising - approximately 500 million monthly users and has a higher audience engagement rate than any other platform. Instagram ads are best for linking to a product page or landing page and reaches the 18-29 age group most effectively.
  • Twitter Advertising - Small businesses typically use twitter ads to drive brand awareness, but the platform is meant more for organic engagement (and is not as heavily used for paid advertising)
  • Pinterest Advertising - 175 million monthly users and most effectively reaches the female audience. Pinterest is great for promoting products without "promoted". The promoted pins have a way of blending right in.
  • LinkedIn Advertising - 227 million monthly users and is geared towards the B2B market and generates the highest quality leads. Great platform for recruiters, high-end products and services that will help businesses

It's important to first define your goal/objective so that you don't waste time and money into the wrong platform:

  • Do I want to simply drive brand awareness?
  • Do I want to drive users to my website to gather information?
  • Do I want to increase sales and get my customer to take action?

The biggest bang for your buck will likely be mastering Facebook and it’s platform - which we all know is pay for play, so you’ll have to come up with a small amount of budget to start for marketing.

We’ve spent countless hours (and paid numerous coaches) before we cracked the code that works for us on Facebook, but it is working really well for us now.

Some of the most important things to know when it comes to FB Ads:

  • Start with retargeting (that’s showing ads to people who already know you but did not purchase). Master this - and start building information on your Facebook Pixel - before you do anything else
  • Once you have that down, try working with the 1% “Lookalike” audience to prospect for new customers. This may take awhile because your pixel audience is small, so try layering on interests - 1% Lookalike and your largest competitor, for example. Don’t use interest-only targeting until you master this.
  • Great photography and videography is key, as is smart copy. Research what’s out there in your industry and constantly test - what works for one company may not work for other people.
  • Make sure you have good offers. For example, we have a $5 trial for our subscription, which converts affordably - if we promoted our subscription with the standard $30 front charge, it wouldn’t be as cost-effective.

SEO is not just about driving traffic to your site, it's about driving the RIGHT traffic to your site , and ultimately, converting leads into customers.

One of the most important aspects of SEO is understanding what your customers are searching for, otherwise known as "keyword research."

Here are some tools that can help you choose the right keywords for your handcraft products business.

  • Google Ads Keyword Planner invaluable for discovering search trends.
  • Google Search Console is very helpful once your website is up as it shows you what words/phrases are generating traffic.
  • Ahrefs and SEMRush are paid tools that allow you to look at results of your competitor's website.

Publish Great Content

Finding keywords is an important piece of the puzzle, but Google also ranks your site based on the actual content you produce, as this is what your customers are reading and engaging with.

There are various different "forms" of content that you may want to consider diversifying on your sites, such as blog posts, articles, studies, and videos.

So let's discuss what google considers "good content:"

  • Length - This will vary depending on the page, however, generally having a sufficient amount of content helps search engines recognize that your site is a good source for a specific topic
  • Engagement - The longer people stay on your website to read your content, the higher Google will rank your website. It's important to have informative and "thick" content that keeps people reading
  • Avoid Duplicating Content - Google will recognize this and may consider your content to have low value
  • Ensure pages load quickly - This will also help with engagement and time spent on your website
  • Shareability - Create content that people want to share, and is easy for them to share, especially to their social media accounts (ie. "click to tweet" is a great example of this).

Another element of creating good content is creating consistent content.

If (and hopefully you are) publishing content frequently, it's important to stick to a schedule - this helps build brand trust and easy user experience with your customers.

Planning out your content with a content calendar is key to staying consistent.

Here are a few great content calendar tools that can help you:

  • If you prefer to keep it simple, your average spreadsheet is just as useful!

Backlinks are an important piece to SEO, as they allow for other websites to link to your content.

Search engines recognize that other sites are essentially "verifying" your content and essentially rank you higher because of this.

Of course, some links are more valuable than others and can affect your site in different ways.

For example, if a highly valuable and credible site like the New York Times links to a page on your website, this could be remarkable from an SEO perspective.

Aside from organically getting mentioned from other sites, there are other ways that you can increase and earn backlinks:

  • Create infographics with relevant data that people want to share
  • Promote your content on different sites/look into "guest blogging"
  • Contact influencers/journalists/bloggers and ask them to mention you!
  • Write testimonials for other sites in exchange for a backlink
  • Leverage existing business relationships

Build A Blog

One of the most effective ways to build brand awareness and grow your business is through consistently blogging.

We've outlined some useful tips for you to consider when creating content:

Consistency and Quantity

Quality is important, but it should be the standard for any content you publish.

What’s more important is consistency and quantity.

Consistency is as simple as committing to publishing and sharing a certain number of posts per week. For me, that’s three per week right now.

This kind of commitment is key, because one day, a random post will blow up, and you will have never expected it.

Oversaturation

The easiest mind trap is to think "I’m posting too much", and “I need to give my readers/audience/this platform a break”.

This is nonsense.

There is no such thing as oversaturation. Well, there is, but it is just someone else’s opinion.

For every person that tells you you are posting too much, there is another person that wants even more of your content.

You should ignore people’s opinions on how much you post.

Patience & Persistence

Keep posting, keep trying, and keep putting out good content on the regular. Your time will come, and when it does, it will change everything.

The only thing you have control over is your content.

You can’t control how people will react to it. You can’t control pageviews, likes, or shares.

So the only metric you should focus on is how much content you can put out in a week, month, etc.

Where to share your blog content

Mailing List

I know it sounds obvious, but the best places to share your content is on your mailing list. It is guaranteed traffic and it is a great way to get rapid feedback from your most loyal readers.

Send newsletters often. I have done once a week since starting, and I’m moving to twice a week soon.

Work on increasing your mailing list as well. Look into ways to increase your conversion rate to your mailing list. I added a flyout popup thing to my site and now I’m collecting ~30 emails per day.

An email newsletter is one of the most powerful assets you can have and it is worth its weight in gold.

Reddit is one of my favorite places to promote content.

It is a very scary place because you will often get banned or heckled, but it can really pay off.

Create social media accounts for your blog, the main ones I use:

Twitter Facebook Instagram LinkedIn

Set up Buffer and share all of your blog posts to all of your accounts. All of these little shares really do add up.

Automate this as much as possible. I automated all of my social media for Starter Story.

Facebook Groups

When I started out, I put together a spreadsheet of relevant Facebook groups for my niche, and I would post to these groups whenever I had a big story I wanted to share.

Experiment With Pay Per Click Ads (PPC)

Pay-per-click (PPC) is a performance-based marketing method that allows you to show specific ads for services or products oriented to a very defined target, with the goal that the user visits your website or landing page.

Here are some tips to consider:

  • Consider connecting the ad to your corresponding landing page so that the audience receives the necessary information after clicking on the ad.
  • Conversion Tracking: When running PPC campaigns, be sure to run the ads with conversion tracking.
  • Focus on quality keywords, even if there are few as this will save you time and money. When assessing the performance of a keyword, it's important to track the expense, conversion, and cost per conversion, as well as the ROI.

PPC advertising can be a very important lead generator as long as it's done properly. Your PPC campaign is intended to drive traffic to your website and help the business scale.

Additionally, if the campaign is not having the desired results, you can make the necessary changes immediately to improve them.

My name is Ryan Schortmann and I’m the founder of Display Pros. We are a custom trade show display booth company offering easy to use portable display “kits” for small and medium businesses wanting to get into the trade show game.

It did not take long to come to the realization that to compete at any reasonable level, we were going to need to take the plunge and invest in Pay Per Click ads and display.

From experience, I know that it is important to give Google’s hivemind some time to settle in before each campaign starts seeing consistent results (this is largely dependent on budget).

One thing that I spent years NOT doing, that I now kick myself about, is adding an "exit intent pop-up" to our site, which lets people enter a sweepstakes to win a Xero Shoes gift certificate.

That one idea has added over 100,000 subscribers to our email list, which is one of our most effective marketing channels.

Retaining customers is one of the most effective ways to grow your handcraft products business.

Oftentimes, it's easy to find yourself focusing on generating new customers, vs retaining your current ones.

That's not to say that finding new customers and revenue streams is not important, however, the easiest (and most inexpensive) source of new revenue is right there in front of you.

Organic traffic from blog posts and email marketing have been the main revenue generator for my business. Early on, I got a ton of free press but later it became something publications began charging as “advertorials.” These blog posts live in perpetuity and link back to my website. Sometimes I offer a discount code to monitor where the traffic is coming from but always use Google UTM builder to create custom URLs that I can also track where visitors originate.

Test out ideas and hold off on spending too much money until you validate the idea. Execution is the thing that will convert your idea into an actual profitable business.

I have also partnered with Birchbox and Bespoke Post. These two companies have a subscription box model where they charge a monthly fee and the customer gets a new item every month based on their interest. This has also been good marketing for me in addition to the exposure Alfred Lane gets with tens of thousands of customers receiving a solid cologne. Some of these projects are samples I did with the hope of the exposure making up for the cost. Others are paid but my product is discounted steeply and so I consider this a volume play where I make some profit and get exposure for the price companies to pay me.

Customers come back through our email marketing. We have built a healthy list over the years and I’ve doubled down on providing stellar customer service in the last three years. We now do artisan markets and customers also come back to see us all the time.

From a wholesale perspective, I began doing trade shows back in 2018 in New York and Las Vegas. The show I’ve focused on is Liberty Fairs. Trade shows are expensive but are a great way to meet potential buyers and store owners, write wholesale orders, and get into stores more quickly. This has been instrumental in my wholesale side of the business. I also joined a wholesale marketplace called Faire. Store owners and buyers can look for items to stock in their stores and buy wholesale. This became incredibly important when lockdowns occurred due to COVID-19. Since I couldn’t go to tradeshows, these became a main driver of revenue on the wholesale side of my business.

Western NC soon to feature 'Smallest boutique hotel in NC,' Peri Social House

The owners of a new multifaceted business plans to open its doors this summer in Black Mountain.

Once opened, Peri Social House will be part coffee shop, part craft beer shop and part boutique hotel, according to co-owner Kathryn Rudisill. She owns the business with her husband, Trevor Rudisill.

Kathryn Rudisill said the word “peri” means “mountain dweller,” and the business will take inspiration from the word.

“We’re kind of leaning into the mountain boho feel with a traveler’s spin,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “Whether you live here and you’re a permanent mountain dweller or you’re just dwelling for the weekend, we hope it will be a spot for both.”

She and her husband spent a year traveling in 2018, spending five months in Southeast Asia and fell in love with the region. Kathryn Rudisill said even though they were not working at the time, they were always brainstorming business ideas.

“It always kind of came down to some sort of hostel with some sort of community beer shop vibe,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “We feel like it’s something that’s always been in the back of our heads.”

With a capacity to sleep 14 people, the Rudisills are calling Peri Social House “the smallest boutique hotel in North Carolina.”

The Rudisill’s also own Gold River Camp and Cabins, a glamping campground in Marion, where the couple lives with their two children. The campground is an old gem panning operation. Kathryn Rudisill said this venture is what got the couple into the hospitality business.

“We love it,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “We’ve hosted people from Honduras, Ecuador. We just hosted people from New Zealand, but then we also host people from literally 2 miles down the road. It’s really cool to see all walks of life. People are in a good mood when they’re traveling, so generally for the most part you get to be a part of their great experiences. We’ve found a passion for it.”

The building that will host Peri Social House is undergoing major renovations to get ready for a planned summer opening. The Rudisill’s partnered with Atriax Group based in Hickory for the architecture and design portion of the project.

Though the building has been the home of several different ventures in its history, it was most recently the home of the Wild Hare event venue before the Rudisills purchased it in 2022.

Trevor Rudisill said one of the reasons he fell in love with the building is because of its different nooks and crannies.

“We always found the places that we thought were the neatest to hang out was always a place where you would walk around and there’d just been all these neat new things, new places to sit, new places to have a drink or hide away from people,” Trevor Rudisill said. “We did like this place a lot because this seems like everywhere, outside or inside, there’s just a new compartment.”

Once completed, the project will include the coffee and craft beer shops, the boutique hotel, as well as a sunroom and porch for events and a fenced in outdoor space. A semi-permanent food truck is also a possibility, according to the owners. A small gift shop that will focus on local vendors will also be in the building.

Kathryn Rudisill said she wants Peri Social House to be a place that helps instill the sense of community she already sees in Black Mountain.

“One of the things that we bring into Black Mountain is even more collaboration with other business,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “I know people are really good about doing it and I see it more and more as we’re getting more integrated into the community, but this is going to be a fun spot where we have opportunities like local craft beers on tap.”

She said it is important for her to create a space that visitors and locals alike can come to “relax and rejuvenate” while also creating a family-friendly environment.

“We’re really looking forward to bringing a space that families can connect without having to stress at the same time,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “It goes back to that whole post-COVID thing of people finally getting back out and I think people are more eager than ever now to meet up and to go out and do different things. We just want to be a space that makes it easy on them.”  

Peri Social House is located at 406 W. State St. and is scheduled to open this summer.

Business Roundup: Country Wine & Spirits to open new store in Ramona; 99 Cents Only store closes

Country Wine & Spirits is preparing to sell high-end alcoholic beverages at the former Elam’s Hallmark store at 1423 Main St.

A new Country Wine & Spirits store that sells boutique alcohol and craft wines and beers is expected to open in Ramona sometime this summer.

Ramona Community Planning Group members unanimously approved a liquor license for Country Wine & Spirits’ fourth store in Ramona on April 4. The license will be transferred from the Country Wine & Spirits in Tierrasanta, said Vince Kattoula, CEO of Kattoula & Associates.

The new location is the former Elam’s Hallmark store at 1423 Main St. in the Plaza Shopping Center. Owner Guy Elam closed the store near Albertson’s grocery store on Valentine’s Day last year because he said the cost of doing business was too high.

Kattoula told Planning Group members that the new Country Wine & Spirits will sell upscale products including boutique liquors, craft wines and beers. The store will also stock wines made in Ramona, European-style chocolates and flavored craft sodas from around the world.

One example of the high-end products lined up is Pappy Van Winkle premium whiskeys and bourbons, Kattoula said. The Pappy brand is not typically sold in some stores, he said.

Another rare item expected to be stocked are shotgun-shaped, 3-foot-tall bottles of tequila, he said.

Kattoula said he expects the store will attract and serve tourists, who can boost the Ramona economy by visiting nearby shops, restaurants and wineries.

“This is more of a tourist destination and it’s an opportunity to find specialty bottles for special occasions,” Kattoula said just after the Planning Group approved the liquor license.

Planning Group member Andrew Simmons, who chairs the group’s Town Center Subcommittee, said four subcommittee members at their March 27 meeting voted unanimously to recommend approval of the liquor license.

“They all like the idea,” Simmons said. “It is supposedly going to bring higher-end items that could be popular.”

Simmons said there seems to be a need for a convenience store in the shopping center for customers who are looking to make a quick purchase of alcohol or snacks.

“We attract tourists all day long because of our wineries and our music scene as well as being a pass-through to Julian and the desert,” he said. “I don’t know if anyone in San Diego will drive up the hill to shop at a liquor store, but certainly with people on their way in and out of town there’s the potential for someone to see the store and drop in.”

Ramona 99 Cents Only Stores outlet closing

The Ramona 99 Cents Only Stores outlet is among the discount chain’s 371 outlets that are permanently closing.

Announced Friday, April 6, the closures end the California-based chain’s 42-year run of selling an assortment of bargain-basement merchandise.

The Ramona 99 Cents Only Stores outlet is closing with all the chain’s stores in California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas.

The company has stores across California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas that will begin selling off their merchandise, as well as fixtures, furnishings and equipment.

The shuttering of 99 Cents Only Stores comes after fellow discount retailer Dollar Tree last month said it was closing 1,000 stores .

Ramona Chamber of Commerce President Bob Krysak said the retail landscape is changing, so Ramona has to be nimble in responding to businesses that close in the community. Along with the 99 Cents Only stores, other recent closures included the Rite Aid drugstore and UnionBank branch.

Krysak said chamber representatives plan to assemble a business outreach packet with demographic data on Ramona. Once the packet is prepared, officials will decide which businesses they’ll try to entice to Ramona. Businesses that tend to thrive include restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and stores that sell unique items not typically sold online, he said.

“There’s a lot of big buildings that are vacant so we have to figure out who we want to attract,” Krysak said shortly after the 99 Cents Only Stores announcement. “It’s not easy. We’re not a city so we can’t offer incentives like other cities. We just have to sell them based on our good looks, because we don’t have the ability to give them financial incentives to relocate here.”

The Ramona 99 Cents Only Stores outlet is having a “Closeout Sale” during the hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Another strategy being considered by the Chamber is to recommend that the county take control of Main Street — which is currently managed by Caltrans — to make the downtown area more attractive to shoppers and other visitors, Krysak said.

Pedestrian-friendly goals for downtown include lowering the speed limit, adding diagonal parking, creating a center divide and installing traffic lights near state Route 78 at the entrance to town from Julian, he said.

In the meantime, Ramona will try to adjust to the influx and outflux of businesses, he said.

“This comes as a shock, we had no warning of this,” Krysak said of the store closures, including the 99 Cents Only shop at 1326 Main St. “At least we have the Dollar Tree store that provides low-cost groceries to Ramona.”

Shelves at the Ramona 99 Cents Only Stores are already being cleared of merchandise.

Interim CEO Mike Simoncic said in a statement that the retailer has struggled for years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in consumer demand, inflation and rising levels of product “shrink” — a measure that encompasses losses from employee theft, shoplifting, damage, administrative errors and more.

“This was an extremely difficult decision and is not the outcome we expected or hoped to achieve,” said Simoncic, who will be stepping down. “Unfortunately, the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment.”
