mother as a hero essay

Heroes: What They Do & Why We Need Them

A commentary on today's heroes, why our mothers are our heroes.

Each year we celebrate Mother’s Day, and this reminds us of the results of a study we conducted recently that underscored the importance of family members as heroes.  In the study, people of all ages and from all walks of life were asked to list their heroes.  We were surprised, yet pleased, to see that family members were listed about a third of the time.  Most importantly, one fourth of all people listed their mothers as their hero.  Mothers were mentioned more than any other person, including fathers .

Many highly accomplished individuals are quick to attribute their success to their mothers.  American presidents are especially likely to do so.  Abraham Lincoln once noted that “all that I am, or can be, I owe to my angel mother.”  George Washington also observed that “all I am I owe to my mother.  I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.”  Andrew Jackson claimed that “there never was a woman like my mother.  She was as gentle as a dove and as brave as a lioness.”

Other celebrities also express their indebtedness to their mothers.  Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong once said, “My mother gave me more than any teacher or father figure ever had.”  With these words, Armstrong identified the precise reason why so many of us view our mothers as heroes.  It’s all about the loving generosity of mothers.  When the participants in our study were asked why their mothers were heroic, they generated three main reasons:  generosity with time, money, and love.

But the most important quality that distinguishes mothers from other heroes, including fathers, is the free offering of love that mothers give us.  Mothers were there for us when we needed emotional support.  Mothers hugged us.  They comforted us and let us sit on their laps.  They kissed us on our cheeks before school and at bedtime at night.

Why are mothers viewed as so heroically loving?  There are at least two reasons.  First, research has shown that women tend to be more likely than men to possess communal traits such as lovingness, affection, warmth, and nurturance.  These communal traits are highly valued in the context of raising children and are associated with morality and goodness.  Second, it is well known that during childhood, mothers are our primary attachment figures.  They are more likely than fathers to interact with, and bond with, infants.  Our society is no doubt evolving toward fathers having more communal traits and showing more attachment behaviors, but mothers still hold the edge.

And so on this Mother’s Day, we’d like to acknowledge and thank Anna Jarvis and all the women who have given so much to us all.  We wish everyone the happiest of Mother’s Days!

Mothers can be wonderful, or weird. In my case, both. 😀

In the days when we were very poor, my Mother worked very hard to make sure we were all taken care of. Not an easy thing to do when you can’t afford to have the furnace fixed and ice is forming on the inside of a drafty old house. But we survived and I, for one, have many happy memories of those days. Some of my best memories are of my Mother reading with me, or the popcorn parties we had when The Munsters were on.

I worked in Women’s Health for 22 years and I saw many Mothers fight and sacrifice and suffer for their babies. These were inner city women who were poor and uneducated, often suffering from addiction or abuse, and most of them didn’t have a clue what to do. But they, most of them, would do whatever it took to make sure that their babies were born healthy and had a chance at a better life. Sometimes that meant working night and day for minimum wage, sometimes it meant struggling to overcome their addictions or dependencies, and sometimes it meant giving up those babies to others who could give them more. Nothing could be more heartbreaking, or inspiring.

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone. 🙂

Hello. I’m here again.

I don’t know exactly why our mothers are our heroes. But I have a theory. Our mothers are the first person that we know when we born. The first person that we learn to love. Sometimes this first person is not your mother. But a person who acts like her. And that to you is a person whom you will mirror in the future. My mother is my hero. Because she faces the worst situations and gave me a example. “She who believes will always achieve.” She taught me to keep the faith in myself…and believe in everything that I want. She shows what is real love. And I’m sure that my siblings are proud of her, too.

Thank you for the history. I didn’t know the context of this holiday. But now I know. Congratulations for this post. And Happy Mother’s day to every mother in the world.

What a wonderful tribute to all the mothers. Mine has been gone for over 25 years, but she lives on in her legacy. She was a lady! Just for the record, I think she would have loved ALL of these hero stories. Thank you for this one. And don’t forget: Welll behaved women rarely make history!” (author unknown)

I surfed whole internet to read comments about this subject. Best regards.

I 100 percent agree with this blog. My mother is my hero; she is the reason who I am. I respect all moms across the world, especially single parent moms. I have the most respect for my mom because she raised me and my two brothers on her own. I feel that I owe her my life, the sacrifices she made for my brothers and I are unthinkable. I wouldn’t want to trade her for anything in the world.

I would definitely agree that mothers are unsung heroes. I feel like we often overlook them as heroes since their influence is so obvious! There are few that have greater influence in our lives. So when labeling people ‘heroes’ we are overlooking what’s right under our nose, or in this case the one who gave us our nose in the first place. I would definitely consider my mother one of my heroes. She has spent a good part of her life making my life as it is now possible. She helped me to grow and develop into who I am now and has always been there for any type of support I may need. My mother truly has helped me become the person I am today.

Mothers are a perfect example of how some degree of heroism is very personal. Many heroes are only defined in the eyes of one individual – like mothers. Does that make them any less heroic? Absolutely not.

Also, I’d like to add that that cookie cake looks delicious!

My mom is by far one of my greatest heroes. She is the mother of four girls, works as an RN and yet still makes time to come to every one of our sporting events and still have dinner ready for when everyone gets home. I know that I do not thank her enough for all that she has done for me, but reading this blog just makes me realize how important she is not only to me, but to my family as a whole. I would not be who I am today without my mom, and I know my family would not be either. Great blog 🙂

Wonderful posting. I really could not have explained that better. I am not sure if everybody will go along with you, but it probably doesn’t matter. Keep up the great work.

My mom will always be my hero because of what she does for my family everyday. She is the sweetest lady i know, next to my grandma. She works extremely hard and does it for other people, not just herself. She works at a public school, where the kids are to poor to go to any other school because their parents cannot afford to send their kids to any kind of school. So This school provides an education for them and my mom is the vice president of the organization. She means the world to me and I am sure she is not just my hero. Love you mom!

Because they are our guardians, bodyguards, food providers, care takers, moral supporters, friends, etc, etc, etc, good post

Many thanks to Anna Jarvis – we are encouraged to stop for a moment and say “thank you” to all the Mother’s in the world. They deserve so much more, but a special day is just fine. My mom worked so hard to make sure my sister and I had an education and we have never let her down. Strong when she needed to be, and compassionate and understanding when things got tough. I am lucky that she found love again after my Dad passed away. She is a remarkable person and I hope my sister and I enjoy many, many Mother’s Day celebrations with her. Thanks for reminding us it took another strong woman to stand up and recognize Moms for all their hard work! 🙂

Mothers truly are some of the most unsung heroes of all time. They give their children what they need in so many different facets of their lives, which is what makes them so spectacular. The ability to provide emotional, financial, and even practical support such as cooking meals and doing housekeeping – these are all qualities that mothers tend to possess, and their ability to do all of this and stay sane is remarkable. Mothers are some of the most caring, selfless people on earth. They want what is best for their children, and they keep their families united. It is from our mothers that we learn so much about how to behave and how to care for others, qualities that are some of the most important things we can learn as children. It is no surprise that mothers are nearly always our attachment figures when we are children, because mothers are the ones who protect, nurture, and love us unconditionally. It is very fitting that we have a day to honor them, but we should be praising our mothers, our greatest heroes, 365 days a year.

I love my mom so much I wrote a paper on her for one of my school projects. Everyone relize that a mom is the most important person in the world!!!

I think most everyone can understand why mothers are unsung heroes. Even if you do not have a personally great relationship with your mom, you can see in so many circumstances where mothers are excellent role models, and figures of love and affection to so many people. Mothers are the reasons many people become the people they are, and many credit their mothers for developing and building their character. My mother is absolutely my personal hero. I admire her every day and hope to be more like her as I get older!

I love this blog on mothers. My mother has been, and always will be one of my dearest heroes. She has helped to shape and transform me into who I am today. As I grow older, I hope to see more qualities of my own mother in myself. I have the utmost respect for my mom, and I am thrilled to see a blog honoring all mothers around the world.

Mothers are the comfort that kids need. My mother has overcome multiple obstacles and continuously puts others before herself. She was my high school field hockey coach and while she lead us to many championships she taught us a lot about life. Her belief in others and charisma has given her the title of a hero, not just for me but for others too.

In addition to my father, my mother is also one of my biggest heroes. I think this blog is important because of how heroic mothers truly are. The term “unsung hero” is perfect for mothers because I believe people tend to overlook how much mothers really do. I love my mom and there’s nothing I could do to repay her for everything she has done for me. She will always be a hero in my eyes whether she knows it or not.

I was very pleased when I came across this post. My mother is my hero for an abundance of reasons, and I feel that many mother’s heroism goes unnoticed. I myself sometimes take my mom for granted. She has helped me form into the person I am today, and I can’t imagine my life without her.

As both a mom & a daughter – and as usual ‘odd one out’ compared to the modern Western world norms – I can say I find it easier to BE a mother than to have had one…

Whilst I value the fact that without my now-deceased mother, I would not be as I am today, and that SHE fed me, clothed me, and cared about me, as well as gave birth to me – I was never close to, inspired by, or looking up to my Mom.

I have to say that I rarely put ‘my’ Mom above other mothers…. or even recognized her role and value until becoming a mother myself. It was not until I myself gave birth and had a precious human being to care for, protect, look after, worry about, and ‘put first’, that I even noticed that a Mom was anything special.

I therefore wonder how many of us who ARE moms have changed our view of our OWN Mothers since becoming moms – and if this may make a difference to how highly we rate them????

My mom is my hero, without you I would not live .. good by mom .. God bles with you.

As a single mother, I’m hoping that one day there’ll be a day dedicated to recognize & celebrate the heroism of single mothers who despite all odds, manage to stand “on their own feet”.

our mother is the loving soul to us.we are existing due to our mothers care.she sustains during emotional and hard situations.when we feel sick, she is the the only soul that remains sorrowful.so our mothers are the first god to us.

Let’s Discuss: Motherhood as a Hero’s Journey

If you’re familiar with this recent essay on motherhood by writer, actress, and comedian Jessi Klein , it’s a good bet that you’ve seen it shared in a moms group you belong to on Facebook. (The link was posted in at least three that I’m a member of.) If you haven’t read it yet, we highly recommend you take some time today to do so, then come back here to discuss! If you HAVE read it, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

(Here was Kat’s take on her own postpartum identity crisis …)

Klein’s essay, published in The Cut, blends the literary and the everyday to form a new perspective on motherhood that — you know what? It’s hard to do justice to Klein’s piece in a single-sentence summary, so I won’t try.

The essay is actually an excerpt from Klein’s new book of essays, I’ll Show Myself Out: Essays on Midlife and Motherhood . (Incidentally, I’m glad The Cut has changed the title from what they originally used online, “What My Toddler’s Nom-Noms Taught Me,” to “Epiphany in the Baby-Food Aisle,” because the original, slightly silly title made it easy to scroll past.)

A pink book cover with white and black text reading \

Klein, who is 46, opens the piece by sharing that she listened to one of Oprah’s podcast interviews with Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert during an errand to buy teething biscuits for her toddler. Gilbert spoke to Oprah about the literary trope of the hero’s journey, and Klein paraphrases some of her thoughts by writing in her piece that the hero’s journey “is not the exclusive territory of men … and it does not have to involve faraway lands.”

After returning home with Nom-Noms in hand and googling Joseph Campbell and the hero’s journey (Gilbert frequently cited his book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces , in the interview), Klein was immediately struck by how, as a mother, the hero’s journey felt so familiar:

What shook me about Campbell’s words is how perfectly they describe motherhood. To begin with: a “profound dream state.” The first three months after my son was born, for sure, were nothing less than a never-ending somnambulance. And even though I was not on a secret island or a lofty mountaintop, once I became a mom, I felt in my bones that deep sense of distance and isolation, of being far away from everyone else, stranded with my new “strangely fluid and polymorphous being” — i.e., my baby. If you’ve ever had a quality hang with a baby or very small child, you know a baby is as polymorphous as it fucking gets. Infants are from one minute to the next, by turns otters, mermen, humans, wombats, and puppies.

Here’s another key excerpt:

The truth is that motherhood is a hero’s journey. For most of us it’s not a journey outward, to the most fantastic and farthest-flung places, but inward, downward, to the deepest parts of your strength, to the innermost buried core of everything you are made of but didn’t know was there. And what I’ve learned is that there’s a reason motherhood as a story is so infrequently told. It’s because, for so many people, our safest, sweetest, earliest memories are of nestling in our mother’s lap, in her rocking warmth, hearing her sing as we get milk-drunk and sleepy and burrow, heavy-eyed, into the crook of her soft arm. And if you knew that your mother’s journey was, intrinsically, a hero’s journey — if that was in any way an established narrative in our culture — you’d have to accept that this memory of womb-like safety, this foundation upon which so much of our identity is built, was often just an illusion. You’d have to realize that while you were blissed out on your mother’s lap, one of those epic battles, the kind that envelops heroes as they fight their way out of a ring of fire, was raging just above your head. No one wants to believe that in the moments you felt the most peaceful, the woman cradling you so softly was shielding you from a sword that she herself was holding. Every mother you know is in this fight with herself. The sword that hangs over her is a sword of exhaustion, of frustration, of patience run dry, a sword of indignation at how little she feels like a human when she so often has to look and behave like an animal. Mostly, it is the sword of rage: the rage and shock of how completely she must annihilate herself to keep her child alive.

Not to hype this essay too much, BUT — I know we’re all busy as working moms (and burned out, and so on), but I really urge you to take a little time for yourself and read Klein’s perspective on the journey of being a mother. (The summarized general reaction that I’ve seen most moms have to this piece online is a blend of “Whoa” and “Wow.” Another appropriate one would be “Well, sh*t.”)

P.S. I’m pretty sure that the “toddler cookies called something like Nom-Noms” Klein refers to are really Baby Mum-Mum (toddler-mom memory unlocked!). However, “What My Toddler’s Mum-Mums Taught Me” would have been a pretty confusing essay title, no?

So, readers, please share: If you read Jessi Klein’s essay, what did you think? Did you immediately buy her book, as I did? (I admit I haven’t read it yet!) Can you relate to the concept of motherhood as a hero’s journey? Or do you see it in another way?

I found the essay to be a pat cliche. The outcome of my maternal hero’s journey is supposed to be the “impossible delight” of motherhood? I’d like to know how old Klein’s child is and whether he has special needs of any sort. For me motherhood hasn’t been a hero’s journey; rather, it’s been a human sacrifice that has entirely eviscerated me. I have recently begun my own “hero’s journey” to rediscover myself as a whole and separate person by excavating a talent that I had buried in the ground for the sake of my spouse and child.

05/26/2022 at 2:02 pm

Isn’t a hero’s journey inherently tragic?

05/26/2022 at 2:19 pm

There is sacrifice and hardship but eventually growth and redemption.

05/26/2022 at 2:08 pm

I agree about the human sacrifice – I thought this was one of the few essays about motherhood that is saying the quiet part out loud.

05/26/2022 at 2:23 pm

She does say the quiet part out loud but then she dismisses it: “So worth it for the joy!”

05/26/2022 at 2:05 pm

I just read it and it doesn’t resonate for me, at all. And it’s not been easy. 5 months of colic screaming, speech delays, extreme food pickiness still persisting at 5, finally starting to sleep through the night at 5 (years, not months), my own debilitating health issues, my husband’s debilitating health issues (thank goodness they didn’t overlap), a big job that would be stressful even without a family. But there has also been so much joy. I don’t share the author’s sense of rage or shock or annihilation of herself. Being a mother to me brings so much joy to my life and it’s joy in the little things (the snuggle-hug, the peaceful sleep, the trusting hand-hold, the sense of wonderment and awe at the most mundane things you or I long ago accepted as normal). Yes it’s hard, but so much of my life is hard, and as my daughter says to me often “mommy, we can do hard things”. Being a mom, raising a girl who is going to change the world, it makes me feel more complete and gives me satisfaction in a way that was lacking in the pre-kid days. It’s a kind of bone deep satisfaction that transcends the minutes that are hard if that makes any sense at all. So, not my cup of tea, but am curious to see others’ reactions.

You said what I was feeling so well. I understand that for some women motherhood feels like they are losing themselves or who resent the changes it brings. For me it brought unbelievable joy. And despite being a practicing attorney (before and after she was born) and the professional sacrifices I made to be an involved mother, I never felt the type of anger/resentment that so many other people express. I would happily make the same choices all over again.

Frankly what I resent is the frequent implication that ALL women feel that way or that I am simply in denial. She felt that way and I do not challenge the validity of her feelings. I have never once (and my daughter is well past infancy).

Imagine if we valued caregiving as much as say a solider fighting a war and giving benefits like paid parental leave, childcare subsidies, free college, free housing loans, etc. Or a CEO and giving lots and lots of money. We say mothers are heroes as a platitude all the time, but there are no tangible benefits given. So sure, treat me as a hero if it means actually valuing what I do.

05/26/2022 at 10:05 pm

Yes! Caregiving- whether of children or the elderly- is so very very very much undervalued in our society.

05/26/2022 at 2:51 pm

Personally, I really dislike this whole trope, and find it somewhat, we’ll, if not insulting, at least patronizing and somewhat sexist. There’s an air of patting you on the head for thinking that your trophy, the same one everyone got, represents some grand achievement.

It’s certainly interesting to me that motherhood, parenting in general, represents the most profound, amazing, transformative experience in most of our individual lives, while also being so incredibly common. But it is common; an unimaginable number of people have gone through it, the vast majority in situations far, far more difficult then mine. It’s quite special to us and our families, but it doesn’t mean we’ve gone through something heroic or extraordinary – to the world, it’s pretty mundane.

05/26/2022 at 4:00 pm

As a fairly new parent I think about this all the time. No one in the history of the planet has ever loved someone as much as I love my daughter. Except for, you know, the majority of people.

EDAnon says

05/26/2022 at 4:18 pm

I think about that a lot too! I will be snuggling my kids and thinking about how my heart is so full of love for them and it is unbelievable and how so many other parents feel this exact same way right now. Even though it feels profoundly personal, it is very much a shared experience. Also, I do still think I love my kids just a little bit more than everyone else (including my loving parent). I know that makes no sense.

05/26/2022 at 4:52 pm

I find it really weird to think about this from my parents’ perspective. (We have a perfectly fine relationship, but I never thought of them as feeling this way towards me.)

It also really changes my perspective on watching kid-centric movies from my youth that include a kid in some sort of trouble. Home Alone and ET look so different from the mom’s perspective!

05/26/2022 at 5:02 pm

I am pretty sure that parents didn’t feel that way about their kids in previous generations.

Spirograph says

05/26/2022 at 5:45 pm

I disagree with this. Throughout history, parents have fiercely loved their children. They may have had very different expectations for their survival and prospects in life and/or been less demonstrative with their love based on the historical period, but I doubt any healthy mother ever lost a child and said “welp, so much for that.” That story about Solomon splitting the baby is 2k years old, for goodness sake.

05/26/2022 at 6:23 pm

Oh no, they absolutely did. It didn’t necessarily take the same forms but the emotions were there.

05/26/2022 at 6:29 pm

Yeah, they did. I’ve always known my mom felt this way about me and pretty sure my grandmother felt this way about my mom and aunt.

05/26/2022 at 4:57 pm

I also don’t think she described any unusual suffering. The worst hardship she endured was running to the store for cookies?

05/26/2022 at 3:03 pm

I really don’t understand these viewpoints. Annihilate myself to keep my child alive? What? Maybe some days I don’t have time for full makeup but that’s about it. I love being a mother and just don’t find it that hard? I don’t feel isolated at all; in fact, I’ve made lots of mom friends and have more friends now than I did pre-kid. I don’t think that stories of motherhood aren’t told. There are entire websites devoted to essays about motherhood.

05/26/2022 at 3:21 pm

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Is it sometimes hard, sometimes in ways that you would have never thought of? Sure! But that’s life. Under normal 21st century developed world conditions, it’s really, really not *that* hard. I don’t think we do ourselves or the world at large any favors by constantly telling ourselves to think it is. At minimum, it zaps us of our empathy for people who actually do have truly hard conditions.

05/26/2022 at 3:19 pm

I mostly enjoy our impromptu CMoms book club and appreciate our thoughtful discussions here. I’ll admit this piece didn’t particularly resonate with me.

American culture pushes us all towards adopting ‘mother’ as a personality trait. When this collides with a toxic combination of capitalism and conservatism, you get ‘mommy blog’, ‘boymom’, ‘mommy wine culture’, how not to hate your husband, maternal gatekeeping, et.c. et.c. I don’t need or want a dramatic reading of motherhood as mythic journey. It’s overdramatic and lip service at the same time. Just give us a f*cking childcare subsidy and paid leave for everyone…for a start. Perhaps because my kids are older (they weren’t easy by any means, they hate sleep), but motherhood is just one part of my rich and complex identity, not my entire personality. Fatherhood is one part of my spouse’s identity, not all of it; in a relationship and family where we each have (or aspire to give each other) the time and space to be whole human beings, why should my situation be different?

I’d recommend some fascinating alternatives: read Kathryn Jezer-Morton’s explorations of momfluencer culture (at the confluence of American motherhood, identity, and capitalism) on her Substack or The Cut (its new home), and also Gail Carriger’s ‘The Heroine’s Journey’ (sketched out here https://diymfa.com/reading/mythic-storytelling-journey )

“Just give us a f*cking childcare subsidy and paid leave for everyone…for a start.” +1

More Sleep Would Be Nice says

05/26/2022 at 4:59 pm

+1M to this. And I haven’t read the essay. I do have her first book on hold at the library. But I agree what GCA says – I’m so tired of the White-Mom-So-Hard-OMG-I-Do-It-All-WINE-PLZ culture tied to $$$. MOM LYFE! WINE PLEASE! Like…stop. It’s like the worst consolation prize for what’s really needed (you know, an ACTUAL safety net and benefits for families).

Also second what I’ve read of Kathryn Jezer-Morton, but I’m also weirdly fascinated by momfluencer/micro-influencers.

05/26/2022 at 5:56 pm

I started reading the essay, then scrolled to see how long it was and determined that I cannot read something that uses the word “Nom-Noms” that many times. But another +1M to all of this, especially the practical support rather than romantic notions or a sisterhood of wine-drinkers.

I think maybe I’ve grown into motherhood. It felt like a very all-consuming part of my identity when my oldest was a baby, and has become less and less so as my kids and I have gotten older. I love my kids, I love being a mom, but I also love being me and I don’t need or want my whole sense of self to be wrapped up in my kids.

05/26/2022 at 3:23 pm

It doesn’t feel like anything I haven’t read before? TBH, I started having doubts the moment Eat Pray Love was brought into the conversation. I hated that book so much, lol.

05/26/2022 at 3:36 pm

I hated that book so much as well.

05/26/2022 at 10:38 pm

05/26/2022 at 3:35 pm

Maybe it’s because I only have one kid and a husband who is an equal partner and we had an objectively pretty boring life pre-kid, but the part about annihilating oneself for motherhood does not resonate. Sure, I have less free time now than I did pre-kid but I’m still my own person with a job, hobbies and interests completely separate from my kid and I don’t really feel like my life has changed very much since becoming a mom. It’s busier and more joyful but fundamentally still the same in many ways.

05/26/2022 at 4:15 pm

I absolutely feel that pregnancy and bf’ing require the annihilation of the physical self.

05/26/2022 at 4:41 pm

I didn’t feel that way at all, and I had a very difficult time with breastfeeding in the beginning. I would hope that someone who feels that way would feel free to choose not to breastfeed, since it is not a necessary part of motherhood. I definitely think there is too much societal pressure on women to breastfeed and not supplement with formula.

There is definitely too much societal and spousal pressure to BF. And now there is no real choice to use formula because there isn’t any to be had.

05/26/2022 at 4:56 pm

Pregnancy felt that way to me, especially the second. I am getting myself back but my 2nd is 3.5! I did (mostly) opt out if breastfeed the second time because of the absolute nightmare from the first time (with full doctor endorsement).

05/26/2022 at 6:38 pm

Annihilate is a really really strong word. I feel like pregnancy and bfing definitely required sacrifice and sharing my body on someone else’s terms, which was weird. But annihilated means destroyed or obliterated (I associate that word with weapons of mass destruction and events likes the Holocaust) and it seems way too extreme to describe pregnancy.

Why My Mother Is My Hero (Essay Example)

What makes a hero? A hero is someone who is admired or idealized for their bravery, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. There are many people in our lives that we consider role models or "heroes". My mother is my hero because she not only takes care of her family but also takes care of strangers, doesn't hesitate to help those in need, and can face difficult challenges and always finds a way out like the hero "Odysseus" in Homer's story.

Like many heroes known today, usually we hear about them helping or saving others from difficult situations. Not only does my mom care for her family, but she also cares for people that she doesn’t know. My mother has done many things to help the community like picking up trash, has given food to the homeless, and she even gives out workout lessons. Like the goddess “Athena” my mother is also very intelligent and wise. She has given me plenty of advice on my life situations that I've had a hard time sorting through.

As seen in comic books and movies, when a citizen is in trouble the hero never hesitates to swoop down to save them. Many times my mom has helped people without thinking the whole situation through. The way she thinks is she needs to think and act fast. Even when things don't go as planned, she still thinks about how much more she benefited that person from when they started.

Lastly, like in “Odysseus”, he goes through many difficult obstacles that takes him off track a bit. But in the end he finds a solution or a way out of every problem and eventually gets back home.  From time to time my mom can go through something but still have a smile on her face and figure out a solution. She’s never been the type of person to let people see when she’s at her weakest. She analyzes the problem and tries her best to solve it.

In conclusion, heroes are people who influence others or do brave actions to help others. The hero can be anyone, be it a family member or a close friend. My mother is my hero because of her brave actions and the fact that she can face many difficult challenges while finding her way. There are role models in your life that can help you improve your behavior.

My Mother Essay

Mother is the foundation of a family. Mother is the one who brought us to see this beautiful world. It's a single word with thousands of emotions. Mother is called by different names in different languages like Maa in Hindi and Bengali, Amma in Tamil and Malayalam, Bha in Gujarati, Aaiy in Marathi, Talli in Telugu, Thayi in Kannada. Here are a few sample essays on "my mother".

100 Words Essay on My Mother

200 words essay on my mother, 500 words essay on my mother, my role model.

  • The Greatness of Mother's Love

My Mother Essay

My mother is a very important person and an inspiration in my life. She is the world to me. She is my first teacher. Every good habit I have is just because of her teachings. My mother is my constant motivator. Whenever I fail to perform, she is alone to stand and encourage me.

Whenever I am lost, my mother is the only one to bring me to the right path. There are situations where she is not physically present to guide, but her teachings always act as a guiding light. It is well said that "Life doesn't come with a manual; it comes with a mother." I wonder how appropriate this line is! When a child is born, it's the mother who understands the most about what to teach to her child and what not.

"God couldn't be everywhere, so he created mothers." A mother is a person whom the child knows from the womb itself. Nobody on this Earth knows a child better than their mother. Everybody on this Earth can harm a child except the mother. She knows what, when, why, how, and everything about her child. A mother can play all the roles of a child, from being a feeder to being a superhero. Nothing is challenging for her. Home is never a home where there is no mother.

Mother: Creation of God

She is the most beautiful creation of God. It is said that if a child doesn't have a father, the mother can do anything for the survival of her children, but if a child doesn't have a mother, life never remains easy for the child. Only a mother gives selfless love to her child; she can sleep hungry but never let her child sleep hungry.

My mother is my superhero. I always get surprised to see her being the first one to wake in the morning and the last one to sleep in the night, still with the same smile and zero complaints. How can a person remain so cheerful throughout? She is the one to teach that, however hard it may be, the day there will always be a beautiful morning waiting for you when you open your eyes.

Mother is the one who plays and handles all her relationships well, from being a daughter herself, being a sister, being a wife, being a daughter-in-law, being a sister-in-law to being a mother and then grandmother. We keep growing up throughout but for a mother, a child is always a child, regardless of age you become. She is the most powerful creature in this Universe. She can be a gentle wind, and at the same time, she can be a cyclone to a hurricane if someone tries to harm her child.

My mother is my inspiration and my role model. I believe nobody in this world can understand me more than her. She can read through and figure out what's going on in my mind. How can someone be so exact in reading someone's mind? She gets up at 5 a.m in the morning and prepares breakfast and lunch, never forgetting about anybody's choices. She then packs it for everybody on it. When we return, we see her working and arranging things with the same enthusiasm and smile she had in the morning. I again wonder how someone can be without complaining about something. I see her always having a solution handy to almost all the problems that we share with her.

"Mother's love is the fuel that boosts your willingness."

The Greatness of Mother's Love

There is a famous story about Albert Einstein's mother. It was said that Albert was not able to read when he was in elementary school. So one fine day, a teacher sends a note to his mother that they would not be able to teach her child as her child was too dumb to teach anything. Tears began rolling in her eyes when she read it to her son. She read that since her child was so smart, the teachers would no longer be able to teach him. Then she bought books for him and started teaching him all by herself, and today everything is history. Only a mother can give wings to her child's dreams.

We have often seen children sending their aged mothers to old age homes but have never seen a mother sending her child to an orphanage. It is very painful to see such people sending their source of existence to suffer till they live. We have seen mothers leaving their well-paid jobs to see their children grow, to teach good things to their children. Nobody on this Earth can ever repay a mother's sacrifice, however rich they may become.

My Mother: My Hero

My mother is my bundle of joy, the first person I search for when I enter the house is my mother. She will smile and then scold me for shouting and disturbing the entire house. Patience level of my mother is a blessing from the divine; she is always very calm and composed. My mother is often very strict, which is obviously for my good. She would not let me use my mobile phone and laptop for too long as it would affect me. She teaches me to be kind to others. I want to become a superhuman like my mother. "Mother is the most beautiful flower on this Earth; each is unique and holds a different fragrance."

How it works

Simon Birch was a physically challenged preteen who’s always had a difficult time fitting in. He grew up with people laughing at him and being unkind to him, including his very own parents. But Joe, Simon’s best friend, and Rebecca, Joe’s mother gave him a sense of belonging by treating him like family. They laughed with him and not at him, but most importantly they loved him. I too, had trouble finding a sense of belonging. There was a time where I was made fun of because of the way I spoke.

I was told that I sound “white.” I didn’t understand why the people I thought were my friends said I sounded “white.” So I asked them what do you mean and the said that I spoke like a white person, and they said white people are rich, and they are highly educated. Then I realized they were jealous of me. My “friends” assumed that I thought I was better than they were because I went to private school and it private school is very pricey. But, I didn’t let that bother me. I simply started going to a different church and met new people and hung out with friends from school that attended the same church. These people gave me a sense of belonging because they liked me for me and the way I spoke didn’t matter to them. They brought out a new side of me I never really paid attention to. I discovered that I had a good sense of humor and helping people is something I can’t not do. All of the positivity really made me more confident in myself.

Simon’s condition caused many burdens. He wasn’t able to run last fast as the other kids, he wasn’t as tall as other kids, and he gets bullied. His parents are a burden to him, and the fact that he killed his best friends mother. Kids who are different, like Simon, are very important to me. I wake up everyday not knowing what may happen because tomorrow is never guaranteed. I may one day wake up with a disease that causes paralysis, or heart failure, but that hasn’t happened. I am grateful everyday that I can still walk, that i can talk, and even move my fingers. These are things people struggle with everyday and I do my best to help these people because have the physical capability to do so. But it’s not only that it can also be about emotion and socializing. I know some friends that have problems socializing. They don’t do well in crowds and I’m there to help them. I talk to them about it and tell them to try new things hoping to help them open up. And this is my way of helping.

Based on internet definitions, a hero is person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Heroes are strong, muscular, fearless, loved by everyone but their one enemy. Heroes are seen as people with capes flying in the air, racing at 700 miles per hour to help get people out a train that about to drop 300 ft. and land in the water. But, my definition is beyond that. I see a hero as anyone who is willing to help someone in their own time. Anyone who can make someone’s day with a simple smile is a hero. Simple acts of kindness like lending someone a pencil makes people heroes. And I think I am a hero to people for doing small things like that to help them. I am a hero because I saved them from not being able to do their work during the class period. I am a hero because I told them to try again and not give up. I am a hero because I am willing to take the call of action by doing what I thinks is right by helping others.

Everyday of my of my life I am told the same things by my hero. “Do good in school sweetheart, be nice, pay attention to your teacher, do your work, and take your time.” My mom is an influential women that has been there for me my whole life telling me to be grateful for the little thing in front of me, because I only get them once. She tells me to try and never give up, especially if I think I know I can do it. My mom grew up in Haiti which is a really poor country and she grew up learning that you don’t always get what you want but you get what you need. And that’s also something she tells me everyday. My mom is my mentor. She is my counselor. But most importantly she is my friend who I call hero on special occasions.

500 Words Essay on My Hero

Introduction.

Every person has a hero, a person they look up to and admire. For me, that hero is my mother. She is the one who has had a huge impact on my life. My mother is my hero because she is brave, caring, and hardworking.

One of the main reasons why my mother is my hero is her bravery. She has faced many challenges in her life, but she never gives up. When she was younger, she moved to a new country all by herself. She did not know the language or the culture, but she was brave and learned quickly. This showed me that it’s okay to face new things, even if they are scary. It’s okay to be brave and try something new.

Caring Nature

My mother is also my hero because she is very caring. She always puts others before herself. She takes care of me and my siblings, always making sure we have what we need. She also helps out in our community, volunteering at local events and helping those in need. Her caring nature has taught me the importance of kindness and helping others. It’s shown me that being caring and kind can make a big difference in the world.

Hardworking Spirit

Lastly, my mother is my hero because she is hardworking. She has a full-time job, but she also takes care of our family and our home. She wakes up early in the morning and works late into the night. She never complains about being tired or having too much to do. Her hardworking spirit has taught me the value of hard work and dedication. It’s shown me that if you work hard, you can achieve your goals.

In conclusion, my mother is my hero. Her bravery, caring nature, and hardworking spirit have had a huge impact on my life. She has taught me important lessons and has helped shape the person I am today. I am grateful for everything she has done for me. She is not just my mother, but also my hero.

This essay shows that heroes are not always famous people or characters from a book. They can be ordinary people like our parents, who show us every day what it means to be brave, caring, and hardworking. These are the true heroes in our lives.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

My Mother as My Hero

Everyone has different heroes, for some people their heroes have special powers. Well, my hero is my mother Carol.

She is the most hardworking and supportive person I know. My mother is now 43 years old, she has three girls and one boy. She worked at Housekeeping department for 5 years but transferred to Sports Bar as a food runner this year. My mother has a big impact in my life because she is always there for me no matter what and she gives me the best advice when I am having a hard time.

She believes that I can achieve anything, my mother influenced me to finish my education, and made me go out of my comfort zone.

My mother helped and showed me that I can achieve anything as long I put my mind into it. She also taught me how to be a good person, for example respecting people that are older than you. When I don’t have confidence, she motivates me to believe in myself that I can do anything for example, this year in sports not having enough confidence in myself made me think that I will not play a game like what happened last year not playing at least one game.

Sometimes when I need help with my homework, my mom will not hesitate to help me even though she doesn’t know it.

My mother life wasn’t easy like what I thought because she never showed or told how she struggled unless we ask her about her life.

mother as a hero essay

Proficient in: Mother

“ Really polite, and a great writer! Task done as described and better, responded to all my questions promptly too! ”

Growing up, my mother used to work every summer when there’s no school at her Aunty to help her family. With all her hard work and dedication my mother graduated college and became a med-tech. She migrated to United States in 2013 after being separated from us for about three years. Coming here, she had a hard time finding a job because she couldn’t use her degree in United States. Instead, she had an opportunity to apply in Housekeeping at Four Season.

Another reason why she is my hero is because she influenced me to finish my education in highschool and to graduate with honors. My mother inspires me more to attend college and pick a career that I am interested. When I was in elementary, I used to struggle in Language Arts and Math but my mom made me realize that if I work harder in school, listen and pay attention to the teacher and ask for help. I can understand the topic that is being taught to me more. I am a shy person but my mother inspires me to look up to her, a person who have confidence in herself.

My mom also made me go out of my comfort zone. Coming from a different country, I didn’t want to meet new people because in my mind people might judge me. Living in Lanai, afterschool I would head home do my homework and just watch t.v. The only time, I would talk to my peers would be in class. She wanted me to join sports and school clubs so, I could interact with my peers more rather than staying at home and this is what I actually did when I entered high school. I followed what she told me, now I am part of Leo’s club for almost 3 years and I joined one sport which is tennis. I never thought that interacting with your peers can be fun and exciting.

She might not have special powers, but my mother is my hero. She has the qualities of a hero. My mother is someone that I can talk to and encourage me to do my best. My mother is that type of a person that doesn’t give up and tries her best all the time, and she always have confidence and I want to be like her someday. Someone who always believe in herself and can achieve anything.

At This Hockey Game, the Biggest Save Might Have Kept a Boy Alive

A man deflected a puck heading straight for a boy’s head at a game in Ohio. With the help of TikTok, his mother was reunited with her son’s protector.

A young boy holds up a hockey puck while a man wearing a hat backwards smiles in the background.

By Orlando Mayorquín

Asia Davis was up late thinking about the harrowing finish to the hockey game the night before, and decided that she needed to find the man who might have saved her son’s life. So she went on TikTok.

“Out of nowhere this puck comes out of heaven straight toward my son’s head,” Ms. Davis said in a TikTok video posted early Saturday.

She had taken her son and a friend to watch the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League play the Laval Rocket on Thursday.

Near the end of the game, a rogue puck blasted off the ice, over the glass and into the stands where Nasir, 4, was sitting.

Just as suddenly, Ms. Davis said, a man in a backward baseball cap and gray sweater leaned over to swat it away.

Ms. Davis credits that man, Andrew Podolak, 28, with saving her son from a life-changing blow, or worse. The puck had come so close that her son had ice chips in his hair, she said.

“I held the puck and felt how heavy it was, and knowing how fast it was going, I kind of wanted to throw up,” Ms. Davis, 33, said in a phone interview on Sunday night.

She thanked Mr. Podolak and snapped a picture of him with her son. Her son didn’t realize he had nearly been hit, she said, and he was “over the moon” when he got to keep the puck.

But the disquieting scenario kept running through her mind. She had trouble sleeping.

She needed to know the name of the quick-acting man.

So she turned to TikTok early Saturday morning for help, posting a video of the close encounter taken by her friend, along with a picture she had snapped of the man and her son.

Ms. Davis woke up at around 10 a.m. to over 600,000 views and a flooded inbox, including one from Mr. Podolak.

“He had just said: ‘Everything happens for a reason. I’m glad little man is OK,’” Ms. Davis said.

The Monsters organization saw Ms. Davis’s TikTok video, which now has over 4 million views, and invited her, Nasir and Mr. Podolak to drop the puck before the team played the Laval Rocket again at home on Saturday evening.

Mr. Podolak and Nasir met again, this time on the ice, and amid a swarm of television cameras and microphones.

“I had a couple other kids sitting behind me as well so I just tried jumping in front of it and it was able to deflect off my hand,” Mr. Podolak told reporters , referring to the stray puck.

It is rare for a hockey fan to be killed by a puck. In 2002, a 13-year-old girl died after she was struck in the head by a puck at a game in Columbus, Ohio, the only death of a fan in the history of the National Hockey League. Protective netting at each end of N.H.L. rinks was later mandated. The A.H.L., a feeder league for the N.H.L., followed suit.

At professional hockey games, announcements typically caution fans to look out for flying pucks. A similar warning is written on the backs of tickets or posted on scoreboards.

On Sunday, Ms. Davis said that moments after the flying-puck incident, Mr. Podolak told her that he had just happened to sit next to Nasir even though he also had tickets for other seats.

“‘I was supposed to be here,’” Ms. Davis recalled him telling her.

“A couple of people were like, ‘Wow, that was a really close call, that was really lucky,’” Ms. Davis said. “But I don’t think it was luck. I think that was fate.”

Pa. Taco Bell employee springs into action to save life of infant struggling to breathe

A Pennsylvania Taco Bell employee is being dubbed a hero for her quick thinking in saving an infant's life.

Bucks County manager Becky Arbaugh performed chest compressions on 11-month-old Myles as he struggled to breathe. The child's mother, Natasha Long, described the dramatic scene as the two were initially coming from picking up a prescription at a local pharmacy and stopped at Taco Bell. When she heard Myles suffocating, she recalled blacking out.

"I ran out of the car and ran around and opened the car door. I pulled him out and he turned completely blue and was lifeless," Long recalled. "I didn't know what to do."

Bucks County manager Becky Arbaugh performed chest compressions on 11-month-old baby Myles as he struggled to breathe.

Enter Arbaugh, who Long described as a "guardian angel," to restore life to the breathless baby Myles.

"I threw my headset. I ran outside. I took the baby and I started to do chest compressions on the baby and then he finally started to breathe," Arbaugh explained. "When my kids were little, my daughter had a similar incident, so I knew what she was feeling. I knew if I kept her calm and I stayed calm, there was no thought in my mind that the baby wasn’t going to breathe again."

It was this calm which Long credits for saving her baby's life.

"We couldn’t be more grateful to Becky. She saved my son’s life," Long emphasized.

"She was there right when I needed her. Was the wrong time but the right place," Long said.

However, while Arbaugh may be hailed as a hero, she says as a mother, she simply saw another mother in need of help.

"I’m just a mom helping a mom. I didn’t do anything different from what anyone else should be doing," Arbaugh said. "I knew how that was and I heard it and I felt it instantly and I had to go and help her cause I knew, it’s painful. You’re just so helpless as a mom when that happens."

Mariska Hargitay has been playing  Law & Order: Special Victims Unit 's Olivia Benson for so long that stepping into her heroic shoes is second nature.

While filming season 25 of the hit NBC series  on April 10 with Ice T, 60-year-old Hargitay took a break when she was approached by a little girl who seemingly mistook her for a real police officer. The case of mistaken identity is understandable considering that Hargitay wears a police badge as part of Benson's outfit.

"Mariska was filming with Ice-T and was interrupted by a little girl walking into the scene. She walked straight to Mariska," the eyewitness says.

The eyewitness adds that Hargitay quickly paused filming after she was approached by the little girl and the actress happily helped her reunite with her mother.

Hargitay's tenure as Benson has set the record for the longest-running portrayal of a character in a drama show, and she's spoken before about how proud she is that her character and performance have helped people who have dealt with trauma find hope and closure.

When the actress spoke with ET at the special 25th anniversary celebration of  Special Victims Unit  in January, she opened up about the legacy she hopes to leave behind for her beloved police detective -- a character she's played since the show's premiere in 1999.

"I hope that her legacy is that she helped a lot of people heal," Hargitay shared as she began tearing up. "It's too early to cry, people! It's way too early."

"There's a lot of love in the people that created this show and a lot of intimacy and an incredible amount of respect and trust and honor," Hargitay says. "So I think that we all honor and respect each other."

"It's been a privilege for me to work with them and to have such an incredibly intimate relationship with all of them," she added. "So this feels like family tonight."

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit  airs Thursdays at 9 p.m.

US man who deflected hockey puck flying directly at boy, 4, hailed as hero

Mother of Nasir Davis calls Andrew Podolak, 33, who averted a potential tragedy in Cleveland, Ohio, ‘a really special person’

An Ohio man who used his arm to deflect a hockey puck flying directly toward a four-year-old boy – sparing him from serious injury or worse – is being heralded as a hero.

The heroic – and coordinated – feat took place last Thursday at a minor league hockey game in Cleveland . The Cleveland Monsters match was nearly finished when a hockey puck launched into the crowd headed straight for little Nasir Davis.

“This puck comes out of heaven, straight toward my son’s head,” said 33-year-old Asia Davis, Nasir’s mom, in a post to TikTok, WOIO reported on Monday.

Being hit with a hockey puck can be deadly. Just last year, an 11-year-old boy from Canada died after being struck in the throat with a puck during hockey practice.

Nasir was, thankfully, saved from injury. A mystery man stopped the puck from hitting Nasir just in time.

“If you know anything about a hockey puck, it’s more dense than a baseball. This dude literally saved my son’s life,” Davis said in the video.

After the startlingly close call, Davis took to social media to try to find the person who had stopped the puck from hitting Nasir. She was hoping to express her gratitude to the selfless stranger.

Davis’s video quickly went viral, leading her to the hero of the hour: Andrew Podolak.

Podolak told WOIO that his friends showed him the video, helping him connect with Davis and Nasir.

Podolak said he remembered seeing the puck heading straight for Nasir. “It was coming up over the glass, and I just saw it was wobbling and whatnot,” he said.

“I was like, ‘Oh God.’ The first thing I gotta do, first instinct, is protect the kid, jump in front of it,” Podolak said to WOIO.

In a split-second decision, Podolak managed to deflect the puck with his arm, the Washington Post reported .

The story of Podolak’s actions and the reunion efforts soon caught the attention of the Cleveland Monsters.

The hockey team reached out to Podolak, Davis and Nasir, offering them free tickets to a game on Saturday and a special on-ice experience.

Before the game’s opening face-off, the three reunited again, met several team members, and were ushered on to the ice for a puck drop.

Davis and Podolak described the reunion as extraordinary, the possible start to an extraordinary friendship between the two.

With every encounter, Davis repeatedly expressed her gratitude to Podolak for saving her son’s life.

“You’re a really special person and I just hope that you never go a day in your life without knowing that,” Davis said to Podolak in an interview with NBC News .

6 dead in Sydney shopping mall stabbing attack. Here's the latest

Emergency services are seen outside the scene of a stabbing in Sydney, on Saturday, April 13.

Six people are dead  and several others injured after a man went on a stabbing rampage in a shopping mall in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday afternoon local time, one of the country’s worst mass killings in recent years. The suspect was  shot dead .

Eyewitnesses described  “pandemonium”  as they fled from the attack, with many  forced to hide in shops . Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the attack was “beyond words and understanding,” but amid the “shocking violence,” there were glimmers of heroism.

Here’s the latest if you are just joining us:

Six dead: New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb said  four women and a man died  at the shopping mall, while a fifth woman later died at the hospital. Webb added that  eight additional people  are being treated for injuries at hospitals in Sydney.

Baby among those injured: A  nine-month-old baby is confirmed  to be among the injured and has been in surgery, Webb said. Australian media outlets have reported that the baby’s mother had died, but Webb could not confirm the reports.

Suspect shot: A police inspector shot the attacker dead on the scene. Police believe the suspect was a 40-year-old man who acted alone, but could not provide further identification details. Early indications suggest the attack was  not terror-related .

"Hero" police officer: The police officer who shot the suspect is being hailed as a “hero,” with  Albanese saying , “There is no doubt that she saved lives through her action.” The officer was nearby when the violence unfolded and shot the attacker when he raised his knife at her, police said.

People react outside Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center on Saturday.

Witnesses describe scene: Eyewitnesses described panic and “pandemonium” as fleeing shoppers fell over each other and hid in shops. One woman, Crystal Wang,  told CNN  she hid in a clothing store for over an hour with other shoppers. Another man told Australia’s state broadcaster ABC that the attacker was stabbing people “indiscriminately.”

Rare attack: The attack has shocked Australia, a country where  mass casualty events are rare . The deadliest in its history was an April 1996 mass shooting in the town of Port Arthur, Tasmania, that killed 35 people and became known as the Port Arthur massacre. More recently, at least four people were killed and one injured in a mass shooting in the northern city of Darwin in 2019.

Pope Francis offer prayers for Sydney mall attack victims and first responders

Pope Francis attends Easter Mass at the Vatican, on March 31.

Pope Francis is "deeply saddened" by the mass stabbing that occurred at a busy shopping center in Sydney, Australia, according to a statement from the Vatican.

"He sends the assurance of his spiritual closeness to all affected by this senseless tragedy, especially those who are now mourning the loss of a loved one," the statement read. "He likewise offers his prayers for the dead, injured, as well as the first responders, and invokes upon the nation the divine blessings of consolation and strength."

King Charles III "shocked and horrified" by the Sydney stabbing

King Charles III in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in November 2023.

Britain's King Charles III, who is head of state in Australia, said he and his wife Queen Camilla are "utterly shocked and horrified" by the shopping mall stabbing in Sydney that left six dead.

"Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who have been so brutally killed during such a senseless attack," a statement from Buckingham Palace said.

"While details of these shocking circumstances are still emerging, our thoughts are also with those who were involved in the response, and we give thanks for the bravery of the first responders and emergency services."

9-month-old baby among victims receiving treatment in hospital

From CNN's Chris Liakos and Sophie Tanno

A nine-month-old baby is confirmed to be among eight victims who have been admitted to hospital following the mass stabbing attack at Sydney's Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall.

New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb on Saturday confirmed that eight people are currently being treated for different injuries in hospitals around Sydney, including the infant, who has been in surgery.

Webb said "the last update I had was that it (the baby) had been in surgery and it's too early to say really. But it's awful."

She could not confirm Australian media reports that the baby's mother had died.

"I've heard that same rumour but I can't confirm that," she said.

Early indications say attack was not terror related, police say

From CNN's Chris Liakos

Police and ambulances are seen outside the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall after a stabbing in Sydney on April 13.

New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb said on Saturday that early indications suggest the Sydney mall stabbing attack is not terror related but cautioned that the investigation remains ongoing.

Webb told reporters that current elements do not point to a terror motive, adding however that the investigation will be ongoing "for many many days" and that it is "too early to say" what was behind the attack.

According to Webb, police believe that the suspect is a 40-year-old man but as background checks remain ongoing, she could not provide further identification details.

Webb said she was "confident" that there is no ongoing risk and that "we are dealing with one person who is now deceased."

The suspect was shot dead at the scene by a lone officer, police earlier said.

Sydney has been left stunned after a mass stabbing at a shopping mall left at least six people dead. Here are some of the latest pictures from the scene.

People are led out from the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center after multiple people were stabbed in Sydney, on April 13.

"Do not go down there": Witnesses describe scenes of pandemonium in Sydney shopping mall

From CNN"s Sophie Tanno

Witnesses inside the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall when the attack took place have described scenes of chaos.

CNN’s Australian affiliate, 9 News Sydney, spoke to an eyewitness who said people were running through the shopping center and falling over each other, describing the situation as “pandemonium.”

Two brothers who were there told 9 News they saw a baby and mother stabbed and tried to help.

“The baby got stabbed and the mum got stabbed," one of the brothers said. “We were holding the baby and trying to compress the baby. Same with the mother, trying to compress the blood from stopping.”

One man described seeing a man in a green shirt stabbing others "indiscriminately."

"[We just heard] screaming, screaming and it didn't seem that long before we heard 'boom boom boom' of the gunshot and we thought, 'We hope it's the police,'" the witness told Australia's state broadcaster ABC. "[A person] is dying 10 metres away … I grabbed towels and there were three people dying around me. "It was just carnage."

Another man who did not give his name told ABC that the attacker would have continued his deadly rampage if the police officer had not intervened.

"If she did not shoot him, he would have kept going, he was on the rampage," he said.

Woman hid at back of clothes shop for over an hour during attack

From CNN's Sophie Tanno

One eyewitness who was inside Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall when the attack unfolded described hiding in the back of a shop.

Crystal Wang explained how, after arriving at Westfield at around 3.20pm – just as the attack began – she walked into a clothes store where "the girls at the shop shut the door behind me and turned off lights."

She continued: "I was really confused, and they told me someone is stabbing people with a knife in the mall. I was hiding at the back of the shop, saw some people fleeing, and then heard [a] few gun shots.”

At first, Crystal thought there had been a power cut, before she realized the severity of the situation she had found herself in.

"A siren went on and not long after, I heard gun shots and started to panic, I was worried the attacker also had a gun," she said. "That's when the shop assistants asked everyone to hide in their storage room."

She added that management announcements probably made the situation worse.

“They were saying 'all the customers please evacuate immediately.' "We were obviously locked inside, just really confused if we should get out of the shop or stay in. "The lady who's making the announcement is obviously panicking as well, which just made us more anxious. She was even swearing at the end of her announcements."

Crystal and other shoppers stayed in hiding for an hour and half, until they were able to leave.
