Should follow an “upside down” triangle format, meaning, the writer should start off broad and introduce the text and author or topic being discussed, and then get more specific to the thesis statement.

Provides a foundational overview, outlining the historical context and introducing key information that will be further explored in the essay, setting the stage for the argument to follow.

Cornerstone of the essay, presenting the central argument that will be elaborated upon and supported with evidence and analysis throughout the rest of the paper.

The topic sentence serves as the main point or focus of a paragraph in an essay, summarizing the key idea that will be discussed in that paragraph.

The body of each paragraph builds an argument in support of the topic sentence, citing information from sources as evidence.

After each piece of evidence is provided, the author should explain HOW and WHY the evidence supports the claim.

Should follow a right side up triangle format, meaning, specifics should be mentioned first such as restating the thesis, and then get more broad about the topic at hand. Lastly, leave the reader with something to think about and ponder once they are done reading.

The Evolution of Popular Culture in the Philippines: A Look Back at the Decades

philippine pop culture essay

Popular culture in the Philippines has undergone significant changes over the years. From traditional folk tales and songs to modernized music and fashion trends, the evolution of popular culture in the Philippines has been a reflection of the country’s rich history, diverse traditions, and societal changes.

Evolution of Popular Culture in the 1950s-1960s

The 1950s and 1960s saw the emergence of rock and roll and other Western influences in popular culture in the Philippines. This era also marked the birth of the “star system” in Filipino entertainment, with the popularity of actors and actresses skyrocketing. Moreover, the period saw the rise of local music, particularly “kundiman,” a form of romantic ballad that became the staple of Philippine music.

Evolution of Popular Culture in the 1970s-1980s

The 1970s and 1980s saw the rise of a new wave of pop culture in the Philippines. Disco, new wave, and punk rock were some of the popular music genres during this time. The era also saw the birth of Philippine cinema’s “second golden age” with the rise of independent filmmakers like Ishmael Bernal and Lino Brocka. The women’s movement and people power revolution also influenced popular culture during this period.

Evolution of Popular Culture in the 1990s-2000s

The 1990s and 2000s marked the globalization of popular culture in the Philippines. Boy bands, girl groups, and other forms of Western music dominated the Philippine music scene. Moreover, cable television paved the way for international television shows and movies to reach Philippine audiences. Filipino entertainment also witnessed the rise of “loveteams” and teleseryes (soap operas) led by phenomenal stars like Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, KathNiel (Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla), and LizQuen (Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil).

Evolution of Popular Culture in the 2010s-2020s

The 2010s and 2020s saw the rise of digital technology in popular culture in the Philippines. Social media has become a platform for Philippine artists to showcase their talents, gain followers, and reach a wider audience. The influence of Western music remains, but there has been a resurgence of OPM (Original Pilipino Music) with artists like Ben&Ben, Moira Dela Torre, and IV of Spades topping the charts. Filipino artists have also earned recognition in the global entertainment industry, such as the international success of the K-pop group BTS.

The evolution of popular culture in the Philippines has been an exciting journey that reflects the country’s rich history and diverse traditions. From traditional folk tales to social media trends, popular culture has constantly evolved and adapted to changes in Philippine society. As we move forward, the future of Philippine popular culture will continue to be shaped by global influences and the creativity of Filipino artists.
