Although we wanted to travel that Christmas, it wasn’t a problem for us. We chose a Christmas tree, decorated it together, cooked many foreign dishes, and played Mark’s Xbox. I wanted to go to Disneyland so much when I was a child. It was unbelievable when I saw my handwriting on a piece of paper my father was holding. It felt like a fairytale. However, there were long lines in the amusement park, and we didn’t see everything we planned. But that doesn’t seem a problem to an eight-year-old kid. Even my older brother liked the trip. A tiny family tradition can lead to multiple adventures and exciting experiences. You can travel, explore new locations and communicate with each other. And it feels so nice to know that each family member is equal in vacation planning.

Half of my family originally comes from Germany. It’s the third generation of us in the United States. My grandparents moved here in the ’70s and faced many difficulties on arrival. It was hard for them to become fluent in English, get used to new customs, and stop missing their friends and relatives. Paul and Anna, in their mid-twenties at the time, were enjoying their family life in Munich. They already had one child, Nicole. Then Paul had an opportunity to obtain a new position in the American office as they were looking for people who knew English and were fluent in German. But the problem was that Anna didn’t know English at all, and Paul knew only the basics. They moved to Chicago. The company helped my grandfather find a place to live, but Anna faced the most difficulties. She had to buy groceries that seemed different from German ones, cook, clean, and look after their children. Anna spent most of her daytime alone as she had too many household chores and didn’t know anybody she could talk to except Paul. Anna missed her friends and family who stayed in Germany. His new job almost entirely consumed Paul, but he also felt homesick from time to time. Anna gave birth to their second child, Nick, my father. When both of their kids went to school and had more time to themselves, they finally felt at home in the United States. I love listening to my grandparents’ stories about Munich and moving to the USA. It took a lot of courage to move to a different continent and start their life from scratch. I also hope I will visit Germany one day so I can see their motherland.

What Does Family Mean to You Essay

My family, especially my parents, are the dearest people to me. I respect their wisdom and the way they treat others. Having a family means that you always have support, people you can trust, and unconditional love. I knew my mother would support my career choice even though it was untypical for my family. I have decided to become a photographer in a family of lawyers. She was happy that I finally decided what I wanted to do and told me that creativity always was one of my strengths. I was the happiest person in the world when we went to choose my first camera together. When I was choosing a college, my parents became my best advisors. They found some people to talk to in these colleges, helped me structure all the information, and make the right choice. I know I can always rely on my parents when I am not sure what to do. It means I can always count on them and never be afraid that they will not support me. My parents love and respect me the way I am, and I feel the same way about them.

Family Definition Essay

A family might have different sets of values but still do their best to understand each other. There are three children in my family. My younger brother Kyle, my older sister Cathy, and me. We all have different hobbies and interests, but try to find common ground and spend time together. Cathy taught Kyle and me to play tennis, even though we are not huge sports fans. We had a great time learning and making jokes. It doesn’t mean that we didn’t take the game seriously. Kyle and I know that we will never become such good players as Cathy, but we wanted to try the game. Kyle always tries to impress us with his amateur guitar concerts in our living room. All of us have the closest family member. My sister Claire is two years older than me. There is no other person who can understand me better. I like her because she is honest, caring, and, most importantly, my best friend. Probably, my sister is the most honest person I’ve ever met. She doesn’t try to make any false impression on other people pretending to be cooler or better. My sister also believes in a fair contest and never cheats. Claire always tells others what she thinks. Even if a dress that I’ve chosen doesn’t suit me, she will be honest. Claire is the one who completely takes care of our dog. She walks with it, feeds it, and deals with all the problems it creates. She also helps me with my homework and gives advice when I ask for it. Claire is always ready to assist our parents with all kinds of tasks, and I see how proud they are of her. I believe we have a special bonding that only sisters can have. Claire is the closest person to me. I can trust her with all my secrets and entirely rely on her, and she can do the same. I am delighted that we became such good friends even though we used to fight a lot when we were children. Claire is so adorable. I feel lucky that I am her sister. She is probably the most sincere and responsive person I know. I believe that relatives can make the best friends. Family is an important aspect of everybody’s lives and it forms an integral part of a person’s contribution to the society. Family nurtures values and builds up strength, love and trust among people.

In the olden days, large, joint families were part of every household and families stayed in close – knit units, which taught them values of caring and sharing and living happily together.

With the dawn of modernization, this concept of large family made way to smaller units and that is what we see today in urban set ups – the nuclear family.

This small unit of family, in most cases, has the father, mother and their children, living together under one roof.

The rest of the members who were part of the greater family in olden times – the elder parents and siblings now come under a different basket, which we call the extended family.

This extended family visits the nuclear family whenever time permits them to do so, during the weekends or during special family gatherings/ festival celebrations etc.   

A part of this extended family consists of few uncles and aunts, grandpa, grandma and any other member of the family.

My uncle and aunt are staying in New Delhi after their marriage since my uncle works at a nationalized bank there and they had to move in, owing to my uncle’s transferrable job.

Before they moved in to Delhi, they used to stay with us at Bangalore, where we live together with our parents and grandparents.

My uncle’s children, a daughter who is 10 years old and a son who is 6 years old are studying in an international school at Delhi. My aunt works as a teacher at a reputed school there and manages the house as well.

Uncle and Aunt’s connection with our family

My uncle and aunt are very close to their parents and stay in touch with them over phone calls, text messages and e-mails.

My parents connect with them when they are free in the weekends and so do we. We chat with their children, who are our cousins regularly by interacting over Skype.

Since my uncle is the youngest son of my grandparents, they love and care for him very much.

Our regular interactions involve talking about the weather conditions there, new places they visited, new things they bought, what went right and what was not through the week that passed by, kids’ educational progress and a host of other topics as well.

Advances in science and technology have brought down distances and made us feel closer at home, when we sometimes chat live with them.   

Our grandparents are extremely proud of their young son and daughter-in-law and appreciate my aunt’s efforts in balancing both her career as well as taking care of the family very well.

My uncle is a very understanding and supportive husband to my aunt and co-operates with her in all her efforts.

My uncle starts his day with walking and exercising early in the morning, followed by having breakfast and starts for his office.

At office, he is the senior manager at the bank and he treats all his co-workers and colleagues with great respect.

He carries out his duties and responsibilities with utmost sincerity and dedication.

He has achieved laurels and appreciation from the bank management and has scaled to the position that he is today with a lot of hard work and perseverance.   

Achieving Work – Life Balance

My aunt is a school teacher handling subjects of science and mathematics for high school students.

She is favorite among her students and the school staff all praises about her, as she believes in quality and standard educational value systems.

She disbelieves in the rote system of teaching and makes learning fun by preparing her own charts and models to bring in good interaction among students.

She encourages students to actively ask questions in class and gives equal importance to co-curricular learning as well.

She considers sports and games essential for a student’s overall development and encourages them to take part in inter school competitions and tournaments.   

Role Models to my Cousins

My uncle and aunt play role models to my cousins. They help them in their everyday tasks, starting from the time they wake up till the time they finish their studies and go to bed.

My uncle has enrolled his daughter at the tennis academy since she was fond of the game since she was a toddler.

His son enjoys a game of chess and has been an active student member at the chess academy.

Education is the stepping stone to a person’s success and this fact is underlined by my uncle and aunt who attribute their success to good education provided by their parents.

My aunt creates a very friendly and healthy atmosphere at home by encouraging her children to engage themselves in keeping things clean and tidy, organizing the interiors of the house and placing everything in order.

She works at school from 9 AM to 3 PM and as soon as she returns from work, she makes sure to keep the house clean and in order.

She prepares healthy and nutritious snacks for her children once they are back from their school.

At evenings, she spends ample time with the children and helps them in their assignments and daily studies.

Once my uncle returns from work, she makes him a cup of tea and they spend quality time with each other by enjoying family shows on television.

My uncle makes sure to keep track of my cousins’ studies by discussing the same with my aunt.   

Spirituality and weekend recreational activities

Prayer plays an important part of their everyday lives and they spend quality time by chanting songs in praise of lord and visit temples on all important family occasions and festival days.

My cousins have also imbibed the same quality from their parents and seek God’s blessings every morning and also before going to bed.

They spend their weekends in cleaning and tidying their house and surroundings, decorating their little home into a beautiful place to live in, shopping for essentials and visiting new places of interest.

They spend quality time outdoors by engaging in sport activities with their children, either playing badminton or lawn tennis.   

Travelling to new, unseen places is a big favorite passion of both my uncle and aunt and they explore heritage sites and hill stations during their summer and winter vacations.

Along with their yearly picnic, they never fail to visit us by coming down to their hometown Bangalore.

When they are here, my grandma prepares their special dishes and they get lots of surprise gifts for all of us.

Our cousins come with us and we enjoy ourselves by visiting local exhibitions and play with them in parks.

The elders arrange a get together and a family outing to bridge the connections between the elder and the younger generations.   

Harmony with the community

My uncle and aunt also take part in community celebrations with their neighbors in Delhi.

Creating cultural awareness among their children is one of their top priorities and they leave no stone unturned to bring about this awakening.

My cousins are encouraged to participate in every type of competition and extracurricular activity hosted by their school or otherwise and this enables them to build strong competitive spirit and positive thinking in them.

My aunt and uncle are very focused on their children’s future and create open paths of career choices for them.

Till date, they have never enforced good behavior in their children, instead allow them to see and learn themselves by creating such a holistic ambience at their home.

They never compare my cousins to other children and always try to bring out the best qualities in them.

They understand the growing competition among children of today and strive hard to make them future ready by regularly discussing their school performance with their concerned class teachers.

Imbibing humility and respect for elders in their children comes naturally to them as they themselves are very down to earth and seek goodness in whatever they do.   

A great inspiration for our entire family

My uncle and aunt are a great inspiration to our whole family. In spite of living independently, away from their hometown, they have managed to set foot and spread their wings on their own.

They have achieved success, both professionally and in their personal lives and strive hard to help their children in realizing their dreams.

They love my grandparents very much and care for them with utmost affection and compassion.

He has always been a staunch Republican whereas I am a Democrat; we just can’t seem to agree to disagree. After a particularly bad fight one year at Christmas, we’ve decided it’s better if we stay away from the topic of politics.

Use sensory descriptions. To carry on from our last tip, use sensory descriptors when you’re writing personal memories. Always keep the five senses in mind: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. A useful exercise before working on your essay can be to write a couple of paragraphs just focusing on the sensations you remember. Don’t worry about telling a story or recording dialogue. Just place all your focus on remembering how you felt at the time and describing these sensations as vividly as possible.

Example: My uncle and aunt often took my cousins and me hiking when I was growing up. Once, we climbed Ben Lomond. I still remember the view from the top: Loch Lomond lay blue and sparkling below, as smooth as glass. I could smell the fresh grass and taste the salt of my sweat on my upper lip, my legs burning from the climb. But more than that, I remember a feeling of triumph.

Family plays an important role in our development. We are not always cognizant of the wide-reaching impact our parents, siblings, and extended family have on us as we grow—for good or ill. So, in this essay, my family and their impact on me is my chosen subject. It’s difficult to sum up all of my feelings in just one article on my family, but I hope that I am able to do them some small amount of justice.

In an ideal world, everyone would have supportive, unconditionally loving families to hold them up and help them through life. Unfortunately, this is not the case. And this is why I feel so blessed to have grown up in the environment that I did.

When I was younger, everyone used to tell me how much I reminded them of my dad. At the time, it only provoked me; what growing girl wants to be told she reminds people of her stuffy, academic father? But, as time has gone on, I’ve realized what a compliment that is.

Most of my childhood memories of Dad are of him in his study. He is a professor and a historian, and even to this day, he always seems to have his head in a book. I was always a quiet kid, so he didn’t mind it when I sat with him while he read. His study had a window seat that looked over the garden, and I’d curl up there with a blanket and a book and keep myself busy.

We didn’t spend all of our time in silence. He’d tell me about his book and would encourage me to do the same, asking me about my favorite parts and why they stood out to me. More than ten years have passed since those days, and now I find myself with a Master’s in English Literature. I can’t help but think that I owe it all to him. Dad taught me to think for myself and showed me that knowledge is its own reward.

My mom couldn’t be more different from my dad. Where he is quiet and reserved, she is bubbly and extroverted. Where he prefers to stay at home with a good book, she likes to be out and about and gets antsy if she’s left sitting around for too long. Mom retired recently, but before that was a teacher. She complained about the long hours and pay, but she loved the kids she taught and gave them her all.

That’s what I’ve learned from her: if you’re going to do something, give it all you’ve got, even if it’s hard. Despite all their differences, that philosophy is one my parents share and one they impressed upon me from a young age. Even if you fail, so long as you can honestly say you tried, that’s all that matters. I’ll always be grateful to them for showing me that.

I feel lucky to have parents as supportive as mine, as I hope I’ve shown in this essay about our family.

Most Influential People – My Uncle Jack Essay

Over the years in our lives, we get to interact with many people some of who make little or no impact on our lives while others leave a lasting impression. One of the people who fall under the category of “most influential people” in my life is my uncle Jack. While most people may contend that it is almost typical for one’s uncle to be an influential figure in a person’s life, I believe that my uncle Jack stands out from the stereotypical uncles in more than one count.

While my parents and my other relatives thought that Jack was unusual, I found in him a fascinating as well as complex man who was always a source of intrigue and inspiration.

Physically, my uncle was a tall person with the physique of a body builder. His impressive physical attributes made him conspicuous and to a stranger, his domineering figure was bound to elicit a second glance. However, his build was not intimidating as one might expect. Quite on the contrary, one could almost immediately sense the warmth and kindness that radiated from this giant.

Uncle Jack dressing was unique and I always thought that he was something of a fashion maverick. His rebellious style made him very popular with me and my siblings despite my parent’s discomfort. While his hair was silky and always well cut and his clothes fashionable enough, he did not conform to the traditional “adult” attires and he dressed in a manner that distinguished him from the rest of the adults.

At one time he wore an extravagantly slashed green doublet that was more suited for a man in the 17 th century to my cousin’s wedding. This made him the center of attention, a fact that greatly annoyed the bride and the groom!

Jack’s ways were unlike those of any other uncle that I have heard of or seen. Typically, uncles act as proxy parents and they guide children in as much the same way as a parent would; Jack was the complete opposite of this. He acted more like an elder brother and hardly ever tried to control my life.

His cool and “hip” manner meant that I could have him take me to the parks or even my friend’s parties without fearing that he would chaperone me or worse still, embarrass me in front my friends by saying or doing something inappropriate.

My friends were visibly jealous of me because of him and for this reason I took every opportunity to flaunt my cool uncle to my friends. In living up to his cool personality, Uncle Jack never at any time complained of being overwhelmed by my requests though I am sure they must have been overwhelming at the least.

In terms of his personality, Jack was like no other person that I have ever encountered. Most people act in a predictable manner and with enough time and exposure to a person, I can almost accurately predict their next move. This was not the case with my uncle Jack. He always seemed to gravitate between absolute ecstasy and raging anger and I never quite figured what triggered either of this moods.

In retrospective, I can speculate that this more than anything else is what made my parents, relatives and other adults around me perceive Jack as weird and someone to keep away from. While for the better part Jack played the role of a “simpleton”, every now and then he would let out a stream of well articulated powerful and eloquent statements which would reveal the brilliant mind that lay dormant beneath the nondescript exterior.

One of the characteristic habits of my uncle was his love for books. His reading taste was wide; ranging from fictional books to huge formidable looking books on philosophy that were bound to dissuade all but the seasoned readers.

I can hardly remember a time when my uncle was not sporting a book and most members of the family wrongly mistook him for being unsociable since he would at times carry on reading during family meetings, totally oblivious of the activities that were taking place around him. His strange compulsion to read was contagious and I took up the habit of reading mostly as a result of his influence.

While I am nowhere near being the compulsive reader that Uncle Jack was, I have over the years developed a taste for a wide variety of books. I credit my love for reading almost entirely to the influence of my Uncle Jack.

It has been almost five years since I last saw my uncle Jack and while my frequent inquiries as to his whereabouts from my parents have not yielded any results, I believe that he is fairing well wherever he is. I have no doubts that wherever he made his new home, Jack continues to be an influential figure to some other persons just as he was to me.

My only regret with regard to Uncle Jack is that I did not get the chance to tell him how important a person he was and what a great role model he was to me. Hopefully, I will also get to be as big an influence in somebody’s life when I am older.

my favorite relative is my uncle John. He is always so kind and generous. He is much younger than my parents, so I can talk with him easily. When I was younger, my uncle used to take me to the park to play catch-balls. We often used to go camp in summer and go skiing in winter. Recently, when I hadn't decided the way I should go, it was my uncle John who recommended me to go to college. Besides, my uncle gave me $1000 as a part of college fees. I'm really lucky to have such a wonderful uncle.

I'd have to say my favorite relative is my sister Cathy. She's 10 years older than me, but when I was a little, she took me everywhere; for example, zoo, play-land, shopping. Of course, she treated me. However, seriously, when I am trouble, I ask her to give me some advise. She is in a position as a marketing manager in a famous company, and I hear she has a good reputation from her subordinates. I take her a eample as a life. She is not only succeeded but also very kind.

My favorte relative is absolutely my grandmother. My father died when I was a junior high school student. So, while my mother goes to work, my grandmother cares my younger brother and me. Essay on My Favorite Uncle

My Uncle Johnny lives in a small farm ten miles from the town in which I stay. He plants vegetables and flowers for the market. In addition, he has a small fish pond in which he rears many types of fishes. With his wife, three young children and a couple of workers, Uncle Johnny manages his farm reasonably well. They have an old jeep for transporting their products to market and for sending the children to school.

Every holiday I go and stay with Uncle Johnny. In fact, he always makes sure that I visit him. Maybe I am his favorite nephew as he is my favorite uncle.

Once I am on his farm, I really enjoy myself. Uncle Johnny will teach and show me all sorts of things. He taught me how to fix up a fishing line and how to catch a fish with it. I learned to identify bird calls, animal grunts and read signs left by animals. I discovered the intricacies and techniques involved in planting vegetables and flowers. I can even predict the weather quite accurately by smelling the air and observing the clouds. In short Uncle Johnny has and is still showing me the wonderful world of nature, one that is so alien to those who live in towns. I remember the time many years ago when both of us went on a trip to catch some tropical fishes in a small stream. We were only armed with a large fishing net made from mosquito netting and a pail to keep the catch. For a time, we managed to catch some shrimps and small fishes. Then all of a sudden from underneath some bushes overhanging the stream, a dark blob of something hurried across the stream. We froze in our tracks and watched the progress of the thing. It was a fresh-water turtle! It was not large, about 20 cm in diameter and it was frantically scurrying away from us as fast as its stubby legs could paddle the water. I was so overcome by the excitement that I went after it without a second thought. My bare hands were about to reach the turtle when I felt a steel-like hand clasp my shoulder. Next moment I was flat on my back in the water. Mind you, the water was only knee-deep but the force of my fall made me swallow a considerable amount of water.

Pulling myself up I could see Uncle Johnny deftly scooping the turtle into the fishing net. With the struggling catch safely in the net, he turned toward me with a big grin on his face. Wow! I eagerly splashed my way over to him to have a look at the captive. It was a beautiful turtle, almost totally green with a long snout that jutted prominently from its oval-shaped head. It stretched its long neck up probingly to find a way out. I felt like touching it and was about to put my hand into the net when Uncle Johnny stopped me with a curt “no!”

Uncle Johnny declared, “he bites”.

Just two short words spoken with authority made me realize that I might have lost a finger or two. It was another lesson for me.

I wanted to keep the turtle for a pet but Uncle Johnny said it was not advisable. He convinced me that it was better for the turtle, and me, if we let the turtle go to live a normal life. Uncle Johnny asked me to release it. Reluctantly I put the net into the stream to allow the turtle to swim away. Without hesitation, it swam slowly down the stream and soon was lost from sight. We watched it till we could not see it anymore.

From the corner of my eye, I saw our red plastic fishing pail lying on its side in the stream. I suddenly realized that I was holding the pail before we saw the turtle. I must have dropped it in my excitement. I rushed over to it but alas, only one tiny shrimp was left in the pail. Stupid fellow, I thought. The rest had escaped. I uttered a few words of disappointment.

Uncle Johnny looked at me. His eyes showed sympathy and something more important strength.

“Well, are we going to lament the loss of a few fish, or are we going to catch some more?” he asked.

My face lit up. Bless Uncle Johnny. He was such a strong guy. I wished that I could be as strong as him. We continued up the stream and by evening caught more than enough to fill my aquarium. I was ecstatic.

Now I am on the verge of leaving school and Uncle Johnny has grown older. My cousins are bigger now and they help around the farm. Though older, I notice that Uncle Johnny is just as lively as ever. Maybe the hard work and the clean air in the countryside contributed to his glowing health. I still visit him whenever I can and I still learn many things from him each time. Whatever profession that I may take up in my later years, I will always have the priceless knowledge of nature that Uncle Johnny has given me. Maybe one day I might stay permanently on a farm and live with nature as I know it to be, thanks. to Uncle Johnny.

How to Write a Eulogy for an Uncle: Step-By-Step

Everyone has a favorite uncle. Maybe yours was the cool uncle who was always much more trendy than your dad. Maybe your favorite uncle was the life of the party. Perhaps he was always quick with a joke, and always carried his juggling balls with him wherever he went.  

Regardless of what kind of relationship you had with your uncle, writing his eulogy takes special care. The rest of your family may depend upon you to find the right words to sum up your uncle’s life in a three to five-minute speech.

You may feel that you knew your uncle really well, but often we are only privy to one part of our family members’ lives. What kind of friend was your uncle? How would his co-workers describe him? Was he active in his community or a religious organization? How would those his neighbors describe him?

Even though the person writing the eulogy should not be tasked with discussing every facet of a person’s life, talking with others who knew your uncle well may help you determine the theme for your speech.

A eulogy isn’t the same as an obituary, but you may be able to gain insight into your uncle’s life if you learn about some of his background. You probably already know where, when, and how your uncle spent his formative years since he’s part of your family.

Make sure to ask the older members of your family to describe what your uncle was like during his childhood or teen years.

Did your uncle serve in the military, go to college, or move away from the family? Maybe you know about his career as a history teacher, but did he have any other interesting jobs or hobbies that may have helped form the person he was as an adult?

Families often uncover exciting stories of their loved ones after they die, sometimes by going through their belongings or talking with others who knew them in other aspects of his life. See if you can uncover any pertinent details to share with others at the funeral.

Think of your interactions with your uncle. Out of all the time you spent with the man, is there a particular interaction that stands out as being particularly meaningful? Why were you asked to write the eulogy? Did your uncle help you out in some way? Is it time to make a public declaration of how your uncle assisted you with your life?  

Maybe you’re sensitive to painting your uncle in too much of a glowing light if your own father is attending the funeral. If this concerns you, maybe it’s time that you pull your father aside and tell him how much you love and admire him as well.

Writing a proper eulogy takes skill and thought. Instead of including a disjointed group of memories or a list of meaningless accolades, why not come up with a theme that perfectly describes what your uncle meant for you and the others who knew him?

Perhaps your theme for the eulogy can be a personality trait that you can describe by sharing a series of stories.

Maybe sharing your uncle’s background will allow others to see the complete picture of a complicated man. It could be that your uncle would have preferred that you use the time to share the story of his faith.

Once you have the theme, write a clear introduction , supporting statements, and then a conclusion. Yes, this is the same format you probably used when writing essays for your English class in high school. Congratulations, you finally found a practical use for writing a formal essay.  

Although the entire speech is important, spend time on the introduction. You may consider starting with a story, a quote, or one of your favorite memories. Make sure to take a moment to explain who you are and how you are related to the deceased.

Otherwise, those in attendance will focus on trying to figure out who you are instead of paying attention to your carefully crafted words.

Most of us are not full-time speechwriters, and even if you are, you probably aren’t tasked with writing a eulogy every day. Since it is perhaps one of the most important tasks you have ever been assigned in your life, make sure you have someone check it for grammar and content.  

Having others check for grammar errors protects you from humiliation. It can also protect your departed uncle’s memory from being dragged over the coals. Perhaps you don’t mean to tell a story about your uncle that puts him in a negative light, but sharing specific memories may not be in good taste.

Here are some examples of text you can use for your uncle’s eulogy. We all know what to expect at a funeral , but perhaps you have never given a tribute before now.

My name is Mary Smith, and I am honored to speak about my dear Uncle Todd today. Before I continue, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to my Aunt Barbara and my cousins Fred, George, and Molly. On their behalf, I would like to thank you all for coming to support our family during this difficult time.

My earliest memory of my Uncle Ted was of him chasing me around the house when I was a toddler. Grandma would get so annoyed when Ted would cause such a ruckus in the house, but my cousins and I loved it. Uncle Ted continued to rile up each new generation of kids with his shenanigans. In fact, he was the life of the party within all his groups of friends.

Irving Berlin said, “The song is ended, but the melody lingers on.” This quote reminds me of Uncle Mike. Even though he is no longer with us, we were all blessed with his presence in our lives. He will live on through our stories and memories.

My Uncle Ryan had an amazing life. He grabbed the bull by its horns, set goals, and made things happen. That’s why he was a successful entrepreneur, a fantastic family man, and a leader in his community. Even though he is known for his accomplishments, I would like to tell you about another side of Uncle Ryan today. He was one of the kindest and most gentle men I’ve ever known.

Examples from a nephew

My name is Brian. And even though Chris was technically my uncle, he was more like a father to me. I have been asked today to share a few memories of Chris, and even though this is one of the hardest things I’ve ever been asked to do, I want you all to know exactly how important this man was in my life.

One of the most important traits of my uncle was his tremendous faith. He had many struggles in his life. He lost his father at a young age, and he saw his friends killed in battle during Vietnam. Through all his pain and suffering, he was always quick to share some of his favorite scripture from Jeremiah. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Thank you, again, for being here today to support Aunt Susan and the rest of the family. We would love to hear your favorite memories of Uncle Peter. He meant the world to us, and we would like to know about the joy he brought to others’ lives too.

Uncle George and my dad grew up in a small town in Iowa. Even though they moved out of the Midwest as teenagers, those small-town values were a part of their personalities for the rest of their lives. Uncle George was extremely welcoming and polite. In fact, the first time I introduced my girlfriend to George, he gave her a big bear hug and welcomed her to the family.

Finding the Perfect Words for Your Uncle’s Eulogy

Don’t worry about using the perfect words at your uncle’s funeral. Those in attendance will know that you are in mourning, and they aren’t expecting a speech that will go down in history. They will understand if you have to pause periodically to get your emotions under control.

A Tribute To My Favorite Uncle

Uncle Sam—“my most unforgettable character”—has always been a very important member of my family. As a child, I was taught to respect him and now, as an adult, that respect has grown into deep admiration. His warm and generous nature is somewhat hidden by the beard he wears which gives his face a rather austere appearance. His penetrating eyes reveal a depth of character which reflects the wisdom of his years. Many changes in world history have been witnessed by him, yet he still retains a strong sense of balance. He is in the habit of weighing all the evidence carefully, always seeking to obtain true values. Possibly his most dominant characteristic is his personal integrity.

This singularly remarkable man has had a profound influence on me. He never pressured my parents into action, but always extended a helping hand to guide my destiny whenever it was needed. “Adequate” was never good enough for him. He wanted the “best available” and promptly took steps to insure that he got it. This was especially true regarding my home and school life. His inspiring influence permeated all the aspects of my growth and education.

The economic outlook was bleak in the 1930 depression days when I was reaching maturity. The question was, what could a young man do with his future? Jobs were practically unobtainable. Should I try to get into private industry or accept an offer made to me by my uncle? With him, the starting salary was small, but I was promised definite training and unusual experience. His organization was sufficiently large and I was promised the opportunity to travel extensively while representing his firm.

I chose to accept his offer and, looking back over the years, realize that I did indeed receive the full measure of training and the practical, operational, and administrative experience that he promised. The foreign travel more than came up to expectations. There were trips to South America, China, Europe, and Japan. Germany provided wonderful opportunities for individual sports, such as hunting and fishing. There were picnics along the historic Rhine and Neckar Rivers. A typical weekend jaunt might include a visit to a quaint, picturesque village, to a wine festival, a fabled castle, or to a winter sports paradise such as Garmisch. Side trips to other countries introduced me to the delightful mountain resorts in Switzerland, as well as to the gay Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. It was also possible to explore and enjoy the ancient art and cultural centers—Paris, Rome, and Pompeii.

Regardless of the country in which I was located, I found that each had much to offer a friendly American tourist. My associations with different foreign nationals gave me an appreciation of other cultures, broadened my horizons, and opened new vistas to me. Stimulating friendships increased my zest for living. Furthermore, my welfare was never neglected while I was on foreign soil. Uncle Sam insisted on good working conditions, medical and dental facilities, good food and living accommodations. Travel privileges were extended to my family and excellent schools were provided for my dependent children abroad. In fact, my uncle was forever doing his utmost to make our lives interesting, pleasant, and secure.

Now in my early forties, I am pausing at the crossroads—faced with an important decision. I can either leave the U. S. Navy on an excellent pension or extend my enlistment period. Retirement means taking a chance on lay-offs or unemployment should the country be faced with another economic recession. On the other hand, with the Navy I know that there will always be security, excellent living standards, and regular pay increases. Uncle Sam has been the best of employers for 23 years and, should I elect to stay with him longer, it would not mean forfeiting permanent retirement, but merely postponing it for a few years until it would be more to my economic advantage.

In any case, whatever decision I make, I wish to extend to Uncle Sam a personally grateful “Well Done.”

“My Uncle’s Favorite Coffee Shop” is a six-stanza free verse poem published in 1998 as a part of Naomi Shihab Nye’s collection Fuel. Through its descriptions of the eponymous coffee shop, the speaker of Nye’s poem uses the uncle figure to create a complex, humane portrait of an American immigrant experience. Ultimately, the uncle returns to his “old country” (Line 29), likely Palestine or another Arab country, and dies the week he arrives. Throughout the poem, the speaker attempts to make sense of her uncle’s immigrant experience and understand his motivations.

As a part of Fuel , which in addition to poems about families on the south Texas border examines the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, “My Uncle’s Favorite Coffee Shop” has many of the hallmark characteristics of a Nye poem. Focusing on small, human details to access a larger political argument is common in Nye’s work, and this poem allows the uncle to speak, giving voice to his experience and offering him a kind of eulogy.

Poet Biography

Naomi Shihab Nye was born in 1952 in St. Louis, Missouri—the child of a Palestinian refugee father and an American mother. Her family lived in the West Bank, the landlocked Palestinian territory under Israeli occupation, in 1966 before returning to San Antonio, Texas. Nye remained in the city, attending Trinity University for college, and quickly began publishing after graduation.

In 1980, Nye published her first full-length collection, Different Ways to Pray, which examines themes that became integral to her poetry over the following decades including explorations of the differences, conflicts, and shared experiences between divergent cultures and religions.

Nye became a prolific writer within multiple genres, releasing award-winning poetry collections as well as essays, translations, songs, children’s books, and young adult novels. In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Nye became a vocal supporter of Arab Americans, speaking out against the increasing prejudice she saw rising in the United States, while also denouncing terrorism. In 2002, Nye earned a National Book Award nomination for 19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East , which represented an effort to establish more open lines of communication between the two cultures. Other collections, including Fuel (1998), also examine the Middle East from her distinctive poetic lens, and continue to earn critical acclaim and awards.

The Poetry Foundation recently awarded Nye the Young People’s Poet Laureate, a post she will hold through 2021. Currently a creative writing professor at Texas State University, Nye has received fellowships from the Guggenheim and Lannan Foundations, and won the Ivan Sandrof Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Paterson Poetry Prize, the Robert Creeley Prize, many Pushcart Prizes, and other awards. Her most recent collection is Everything Comes Next: Collected and New Poems (2020).

“My Uncle’s Favorite Coffee Shop” begins with a description of steam rising from a cup of coffee, and moves into a description of a barista, Barbara, who knows a coffee shop patron so well that she presents their order without their having to ask. Nye describes the comfort of this relationship, and the specific pleasure it offers the immigrant, who can have their ordered delivered “without saying” (Line 7) anything.

In the second stanza, Nye describes the speaker’s uncle in more detail, and gives him a voice. He has a particular booth that he frequents at the coffee shop in question, and he says, “I cannot tell you—how I love this place,” (Line 9). He drinks a glass of ice water , and the speaker muses that he “hailed from an iceless region” (Line 11) and had “definite ideas about water drinking” (Line 12). She notes that he uses the particular phrase, “I cannot tell you” (Line 13), all the time, but despite his claim , he would always attempt to articulate what he wanted to say.

The third stanza, the longest of the poem, examines in greater detail the uncle’s life in the United States. The speaker notes he “wore a white shirt every day of his life” (Line 14) and experiences a multitude of threatening things, like the “roaring ocean / and the television full of lies” (Lines 15-16). She emphasizes the duality of his immigrant experience, saying, “[h]e shook his head back and forth / from one country to the other” (Lines 17-18). The speaker pulls the focus back to a more macro level, describing the roles immigrants often fill—driving taxis, selling beer and sodas—and claims they “had double and nothing all at once” (Line 20). She returns to her uncle and his experience with the English language, how when he would “[f]ind one note that rang true, / he sang it over and over inside” (Lines 22-23). And while the uncle felt at home at the coffee shop, “he never became” (Line 27) the people in other booths who seem more at ease with their “loose banter and casual clothes” (Line 26).

The speaker writes that after 23 years in America, her uncle, “in a bravado moment” (Line 28), decides to leave and return to his home country. The speaker says, “maybe it would be peaceful now” (Line 32), although it is unclear if this is her uncle’s hope and voice, or her own projection. The uncle’s voice interjects once more, saying “I cannot tell you—how my heart has settled at last” (Line 33) as the speaker describes how she and others took leave of her uncle.

Before moving into the last stanza and recounting her uncle’s death, Nye places a single phrase as the penultimate stanza: “I cannot tell—” (Line 37). The speaker’s voice in the final lines is flat and resigned, as she says that what she cannot tell is “how we felt / to learn that the week he arrived, / he died” (Lines 38-40). She claims that she also cannot tell the reader what it is like now, in the aftermath, driving to the same coffee shop to sit in his booth and order “oh, anything, because if we don’t, nothing will come” (Lines 43-44).
