How to Write a Non-Cliche College Essay About Sports + Examples

What’s covered:, what makes a sports essay cliche.

  • How To Make Your Sports Essay Unique

Great Examples of College Essays About Sports

Where to get your college essay edited for free, or by an expert.

You’ve been brainstorming essay topics for your college applications, and you think you’ve finally found the right one: an extended metaphor likening your experience on the field with overcoming personal struggles. The problem: many other students have this same thought.

The purpose of a college essay is to make yourself stand out as a unique individual, but when students write about sports, they often blend in. Because of that, students are usually advised to pick a different topic.

That being said, it is possible to write a non-cliche college essay about sports if you put in a little extra effort. Read along to learn how to make your sports essay different from all the other sports essays.

Sports essays are cliche when they follow a standard trajectory. Some of these trajectories include writing a story about:

  • An agonizing defeat
  • Forging bonds with teammates
  • Overcoming adversity
  • Overcoming an injury
  • Refusing to quit
  • Victory during a big game

Because sports essays have very similar themes and “lessons learned,” it can be difficult to make your story stand out. These trajectories also often focus too much on the sport or storyline, and not enough on the writer’s reflections and personality.

As you write your essay, try to think about what your experience says about you rather than what you learned from your experience. You are more than just one lesson you learned!

(Keep in mind that the sports essay is not the only college essay cliche. Learn about other essay cliches and how to fix them in our complete guide).

How to Make Your Sports Essay Unique

1. focus on a specific moment or reflection..

The college essay is a way for students to humanize themselves to admissions officers. You do not feel human if you are describing yourself as just another player on the field!

One important way to make your essay about you (not just about sports) is by focusing on a specific moment in time and inviting the reader to join you in that moment. Explain to the reader what it would be like to be sitting in that locker room as you questioned the values of the other players on your team. Ask your reader to sit with you on the cot in the trainer’s room as your identity was stripped away from you when they said “your body can’t take this anymore.” Bring your reader to the dinner table and involve them in your family’s conversation about how sports were affecting your mental health and your treatment of those around you.

Intense descriptions of a specific experience will evoke emotions in your reader and allow them to connect with you and feel for you.

When in doubt, avoid anything that can be covered by ESPN. On ESPN, we see the games, we see the benches, we even see the locker rooms and training rooms. Take your reader somewhere different and show them something unique.

2. Use sports to point out broader themes in your life.

The main risk when writing about sports is neglecting to write about yourself. Before you get started, think about the main values that you want to express in your sports essay. Sports are simply your avenue for telling the reader what makes you unique.

As a test, imagine if you were a pianist. Would you be able to talk about these same values? What if you were a writer? Or a chemist? Articulating your values is the end, and sports should simply be your means.

Some values that you might want to focus on:

  • Autonomy (you want to be able to set your mind to anything and achieve it on your own)
  • Growth (you seek improvement constantly)
  • Curiosity (you are willing to try anything once)
  • Vulnerability (you aren’t afraid to fail, as long as you give it your all)
  • Community (you value the feedback of others and need camaraderie to succeed)
  • Craft (you think that with deliberate care, anything can be perfected)
  • Responsibility (you believe that you owe something to those around you and perhaps they also owe something to you)

You can use the ESPN check again to make sure that you are using sports as an avenue to show your depth.

Things ESPN covers: how a player reacts to defeat, how injuries affect a player’s gameplay/attitude, how players who don’t normally work well together are working together on their new team.

Things ESPN doesn’t cover: the conversation that a player had with their mother about fear of death before going into a big surgery (value: family and connection), the ways that the intense pressure to succeed consumed a player to the point they couldn’t be there for the people in their life (value: supporting others and community), the body image issues that weigh on a player’s mind when playing their sport and how they overcame those (value: health and growth).

3. Turn a cliche storyline on its head.

There’s no getting around the fact that sports essays are often cliche. But there is a way to confront the cliche head-on. For example, lots of people write essays about the lessons they learned from an injury, victory, and so on, but fewer students explain how they are embracing those lessons.

Perhaps you learned that competition is overwhelming for you and you prefer teamwork, so you switched from playing basketball to playing Dungeons & Dragons. Maybe, when your softball career ended abruptly, you had to find a new identity and that’s when you became obsessed with your flower garden and decided to pursue botany. Or maybe, you have stuck with football through it all, but your junior-year mental health struggle showed you that football should be fun and you have since started a nonprofit for local children to healthily engage with sports.

If your story itself is more cliche, try bringing readers to the present moment with you and show why the cliche matters and what it did for you. This requires a fair amount of creativity. Ensure you’re not parroting a frequently used topic by really thinking deeply to find your own unique spin.

Night had robbed the academy of its daytime colors, yet there was comfort in the dim lights that cast shadows of our advances against the bare studio walls. Silhouettes of roundhouse kicks, spin crescent kicks, uppercuts and the occasional butterfly kick danced while we sparred. She approached me, eyes narrowed with the trace of a smirk challenging me. “Ready spar!” Her arm began an upward trajectory targeting my shoulder, a common first move. I sidestepped — only to almost collide with another flying fist. Pivoting my right foot, I snapped my left leg, aiming my heel at her midsection. The center judge raised one finger.

There was no time to celebrate, not in the traditional sense at least. Master Pollard gave a brief command greeted with a unanimous “Yes, sir” and the thud of 20 hands dropping-down-and-giving-him-30, while the “winners” celebrated their victory with laps as usual.

Three years ago, seven-thirty in the evening meant I was a warrior. It meant standing up straighter, pushing a little harder, “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am”, celebrating birthdays by breaking boards, never pointing your toes, and familiarity. Three years later, seven-thirty in the morning meant I was nervous.

The room is uncomfortably large. The sprung floor soaks up the checkerboard of sunlight piercing through the colonial windows. The mirrored walls further illuminate the studio and I feel the light scrutinizing my sorry attempts at a pas de bourrée, while capturing the organic fluidity of the dancers around me. “Chassé en croix, grand battement, pique, pirouette.” I follow the graceful limbs of the woman in front of me, her legs floating ribbons, as she executes what seems to be a perfect ronds de jambes. Each movement remains a negotiation. With admirable patience, Ms. Tan casts me a sympathetic glance.

There is no time to wallow in the misery that is my right foot. Taekwondo calls for dorsiflexion; pointed toes are synonymous with broken toes. My thoughts drag me into a flashback of the usual response to this painful mistake: “You might as well grab a tutu and head to the ballet studio next door.” Well, here I am Master Pollard, unfortunately still following your orders to never point my toes, but no longer feeling the satisfaction that comes with being a third degree black belt with 5 years of experience quite literally under her belt. It’s like being a white belt again — just in a leotard and ballet slippers.

But the appetite for new beginnings that brought me here doesn’t falter. It is only reinforced by the classical rendition of “Dancing Queen” that floods the room and the ghost of familiarity that reassures me that this new beginning does not and will not erase the past. After years spent at the top, it’s hard to start over. But surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become. In Taekwondo, we started each class reciting the tenets: honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.

The thing about change is that it eventually stops making things so different. After nine different schools, four different countries, three different continents, fluency in Tamil, Norwegian, and English, there are more blurred lines than there are clear fragments. My life has not been a tactfully executed, gold medal-worthy Taekwondo form with each movement defined, nor has it been a series of frappés performed by a prima ballerina with each extension identical and precise, but thankfully it has been like the dynamics of a spinning back kick, fluid, and like my chances of landing a pirouette, unpredictable.

Why it works:

What’s especially powerful about this essay is that the author uses detailed imagery to convey a picture of what they’re experiencing, so much so that the reader is along for the ride. This works as a sports essay not only because of the language and sensory details, but also because the writer focuses on a specific moment in time, while at the same time exploring why Taekwondo is such an important part of their life.

After the emotional image is created, the student finishes their essay with valuable reflection. With the reflection, they show admissions officers that they are mature and self-aware. Self-awareness comes through with statements like “surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become” and maturity can be seen through the student’s discussion of values “honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.” These are the kinds of comments that should find their way into a sports essay!

essay why sport is important

“Advanced females ages 13 to 14 please proceed to staging with your coaches at this time.” Skittering around the room, eyes wide and pleading, I frantically explained my situation to nearby coaches. The seconds ticked away in my head; every polite refusal increased my desperation.

Despair weighed me down. I sank to my knees as a stream of competitors, coaches, and officials flowed around me. My dojang had no coach, and the tournament rules prohibited me from competing without one.

Although I wanted to remain strong, doubts began to cloud my mind. I could not help wondering: what was the point of perfecting my skills if I would never even compete? The other members of my team, who had found coaches minutes earlier, attempted to comfort me, but I barely heard their words. They couldn’t understand my despair at being left on the outside, and I never wanted them to understand.

Since my first lesson 12 years ago, the members of my dojang have become family. I have watched them grow up, finding my own happiness in theirs. Together, we have honed our kicks, blocks, and strikes. We have pushed one another to aim higher and become better martial artists. Although my dojang had searched for a reliable coach for years, we had not found one. When we attended competitions in the past, my teammates and I had always gotten lucky and found a sympathetic coach. Now, I knew this practice was unsustainable. It would devastate me to see the other members of my dojang in my situation, unable to compete and losing hope as a result. My dojang needed a coach, and I decided it was up to me to find one.

I first approached the adults in the dojang – both instructors and members’ parents. However, these attempts only reacquainted me with polite refusals. Everyone I asked told me they couldn’t devote multiple weekends per year to competitions. I soon realized that I would have become the coach myself.

At first, the inner workings of tournaments were a mystery to me. To prepare myself for success as a coach, I spent the next year as an official and took coaching classes on the side. I learned everything from motivational strategies to technical, behind-the-scenes components of Taekwondo competitions. Though I emerged with new knowledge and confidence in my capabilities, others did not share this faith.

Parents threw me disbelieving looks when they learned that their children’s coach was only a child herself. My self-confidence was my armor, deflecting their surly glances. Every armor is penetrable, however, and as the relentless barrage of doubts pounded my resilience, it began to wear down. I grew unsure of my own abilities.

Despite the attack, I refused to give up. When I saw the shining eyes of the youngest students preparing for their first competition, I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was. The knowledge that I could solve my dojang’s longtime problem motivated me to overcome my apprehension.

Now that my dojang flourishes at competitions, the attacks on me have weakened, but not ended. I may never win the approval of every parent; at times, I am still tormented by doubts, but I find solace in the fact that members of my dojang now only worry about competing to the best of their abilities.

Now, as I arrive at a tournament with my students, I close my eyes and remember the past. I visualize the frantic search for a coach and the chaos amongst my teammates as we compete with one another to find coaches before the staging calls for our respective divisions. I open my eyes to the exact opposite scene. Lacking a coach hurt my ability to compete, but I am proud to know that no member of my dojang will have to face that problem again.

In the beginning, you might think this is another cliche sports essay about overcoming adversity. But instead, it becomes a unique statement and coming-of-age tale that reads as a suspenseful narrative.

The author connects their experience with martial arts to larger themes in their life but manages to do so without riffing off of tried-and-true themes. Through statements like “I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was” we learn about the students values and their desire to be there for those who depend on them.

The student also brings it full circle, demonstrating their true transformation. By using the “Same, but Different” ending technique , the student places themself in the same environment that we saw in the intro, but experiences it differently due to their actions throughout the narrative. This is very compelling!

“1…2…3…4 pirouettes! New record!” My friends cheered as I landed my turns. Pleased with my progress, I gazed down at my worn-out pointe shoes. The sweltering blisters, numbing ice-baths, and draining late-night practices did not seem so bad after all. Next goal: five turns.

For as long as I can remember, ballet, in all its finesse and glamor, had kept me driven day to day. As a child, the lithe ballerinas, donning ethereal costumes as they floated across the stage, were my motivation. While others admired Messi and Adele, I idolized Carlos Acosta, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet.

As I devoted more time and energy towards my craft, I became obsessed with improving my technique. I would stretch for hours after class, forcing my leg one inch higher in an effort to mirror the Dance Magazine cover girls. I injured my feet and ruined pair after pair of pointe shoes, turning on wood, cement, and even grass to improve my balance as I spun. At competitions, the dancers with the 180-degree leg extensions, endless turns, and soaring leaps—the ones who received “Bravos!” from the roaring audience—further pushed me to refine my skills and perfect my form. I believed that, with enough determination, I would one day attain their level of perfection. Reaching the quadruple-pirouette milestone only intensified my desire to accomplish even more.

My efforts seemed to have come to fruition two summers ago when I was accepted to dance with Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet at their renowned New York City summer intensive. I walked into my first session eager to learn from distinguished ballet masters and worldly dancers, already anticipating my improvement. Yet, as I danced alongside the accomplished ballerinas, I felt out of place. Despite their clean technique and professional training, they did not aim for glorious leg extensions or prodigious leaps. When they performed their turn combinations, most of them only executed two turns as I attempted four.

“Dancers, double-pirouettes only.”

Taken aback and confused, I wondered why our teacher expected so little from us. The other ballerinas seemed content, gracing the studio with their simple movements.

As I grew closer with my Moscow roommates, I gradually learned that their training emphasized the history of the art form instead of stylistic tricks. Rather than show off their physical ability, their performances aimed to convey a story, one that embodied the rich culture of ballet and captured both the legacy of the dancers before them and their own artistry. As I observed my friends more intently in repertoire class, I felt the pain of the grief-stricken white swan from Swan Lake, the sass of the flirtatious Kitri from Don Quijote, and I gradually saw what I had overlooked before. My definition of talent had been molded by crowd-pleasing elements—whirring pirouettes, gravity-defying leaps, and mind-blowing leg extensions. This mindset slowly stripped me from the roots of my passion and my personal connection with ballet.

With the Bolshoi, I learned to step back and explore the meaning behind each step and the people behind the scenes. Ballet carries history in its movements, from the societal values of the era to each choreographer’s unique flair. As I uncovered the messages behind each pirouette, kick, and jump, my appreciation for ballet grew beyond my obsession with raw athleticism and developed into a love for the art form’s emotive abilities in bridging the dancers with the audience. My journey as an artist has allowed me to see how technical execution is only the means to a greater understanding between dancer and spectator, between storyteller and listener. The elegance and complexity of ballet does not revolve around astonishing stunts but rather the evocative strength and artistry manifested in the dancer, in me. It is the combination of sentiments, history, tradition, and passion that has allowed ballet and its lessons of human connection to become my lifestyle both on and off stage.

This essay is about lessons. While the author is a dancer, this narrative isn’t really about ballet, per se — it’s about the author’s personal growth. It is purposefully reflective as the student shows a nice character arc that begins with an eager young ballerina and ends with a reflection on their past. The primary strength of this essay is the honesty and authenticity that the student approaches it with.

In the end, the student turns a cliche on its head as they embrace the idea of overcoming adversity and demonstrate how the adversity, in this case, was their own stereotypes about their art. It’s beautiful!

“Getting beat is one thing – it’s part of competing – but I want no part in losing.” Coach Rob Stark’s motto never fails to remind me of his encouragement on early-morning bus rides to track meets around the state. I’ve always appreciated the phrase, but an experience last June helped me understand its more profound, universal meaning.

Stark, as we affectionately call him, has coached track at my high school for 25 years. His care, dedication, and emphasis on developing good character has left an enduring impact on me and hundreds of other students. Not only did he help me discover my talent and love for running, but he also taught me the importance of commitment and discipline and to approach every endeavor with the passion and intensity that I bring to running. When I learned a neighboring high school had dedicated their track to a longtime coach, I felt that Stark deserved similar honors.

Our school district’s board of education indicated they would only dedicate our track to Stark if I could demonstrate that he was extraordinary. I took charge and mobilized my teammates to distribute petitions, reach out to alumni, and compile statistics on the many team and individual champions Stark had coached over the years. We received astounding support, collecting almost 3,000 signatures and pages of endorsements from across the community. With help from my teammates, I presented this evidence to the board.

They didn’t bite.

Most members argued that dedicating the track was a low priority. Knowing that we had to act quickly to convince them of its importance, I called a team meeting where we drafted a rebuttal for the next board meeting. To my surprise, they chose me to deliver it. I was far from the best public speaker in the group, and I felt nervous about going before the unsympathetic board again. However, at that second meeting, I discovered that I enjoy articulating and arguing for something that I’m passionate about.

Public speaking resembles a cross country race. Walking to the starting line, you have to trust your training and quell your last minute doubts. When the gun fires, you can’t think too hard about anything; your performance has to be instinctual, natural, even relaxed. At the next board meeting, the podium was my starting line. As I walked up to it, familiar butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Instead of the track stretching out in front of me, I faced the vast audience of teachers, board members, and my teammates. I felt my adrenaline build, and reassured myself: I’ve put in the work, my argument is powerful and sound. As the board president told me to introduce myself, I heard, “runners set” in the back of my mind. She finished speaking, and Bang! The brief silence was the gunshot for me to begin.

The next few minutes blurred together, but when the dust settled, I knew from the board members’ expressions and the audience’s thunderous approval that I had run quite a race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough; the board voted down our proposal. I was disappointed, but proud of myself, my team, and our collaboration off the track. We stood up for a cause we believed in, and I overcame my worries about being a leader. Although I discovered that changing the status quo through an elected body can be a painstakingly difficult process and requires perseverance, I learned that I enjoy the challenges this effort offers. Last month, one of the school board members joked that I had become a “regular” – I now often show up to meetings to advocate for a variety of causes, including better environmental practices in cafeterias and safer equipment for athletes.

Just as Stark taught me, I worked passionately to achieve my goal. I may have been beaten when I appealed to the board, but I certainly didn’t lose, and that would have made Stark proud.

This essay uses the idea of sports to explore a more profound topic—growing through relationships. They really embrace using sports as an avenue to tell the reader about a specific experience that changed the way they approach the world.

The emphasis on relationships is why this essay works well and doesn’t fall into a cliche. The narrator grows not because of their experience with track but because of their relationship with their coach, who inspired them to evolve and become a leader.

How sport can have a positive impact on mental and physical health

It’s not always easy to start a workout, but research shows that sport and exercise are beneficial not only for your physical health, but your mental well-being, too. Let us help!

Olympic Flame passes iconic London landmarks on penultimate day of Olympic Torch Relay

Health experts and Olympic athletes agree: Your mental and physical health benefit when you get active and participate in sport – whatever that means for you.

From daily exercise to choosing a sport to practice or play, the body and mind are worked in new and different ways each time you move your body.

On June 23rd every year we come together to celebrate that, as part of Olympic Day.

For the 2020 edition, we connected with Olympians around the world for Olympic Day 2020 at-home workouts – and a reminder: We’re stronger together, especially when we stay active!

And those are still available online to help inspire you today.

Sport benefits: Both the physical and mental

While the physical benefits are numerous (more on that below), the UK's National Health Service (NHS) report that people who take part in regular physical activity have up to a 30 percent lower risk of depression.

Additionally, exercise can help lower anxiety, reduce the risk of illness and increase energy levels. Want better sleep? Work up a good sweat!

Exercise can help you fall asleep faster and sleep for longer, research says.

It was in June 2020 that the IOC partnered with the World Health Organization and United Nations to promote the #HEALTHYTogether campaign , which highlights the benefits of physical activity in the face of the pandemic.

Over 50 at-home workouts are searchable across Olympics.com for you, each which help further the idea that moving and challenging the body can only prove beneficial for your physical and mental well-being.

The athletes' perspective: 'I used this strength to survive'

“If I had sat doing nothing, I would have gone crazy,” says Syria's Sanda Aldass , who fled the trauma of civil war in her country, leaving behind her husband and infant child.

Instead, she had judo - and has been selected for the IOC Refugee Olympic Team Tokyo 2020 for the Games in 2021.

“Running around and doing some exercises filled up my time and also kept me in good mental health,” Sanda said of the impact of sport on her life during nine months spent in a refugee camp in the Netherlands in 2015.

The same power of sport goes for Iranian taekwondo athlete Ali Noghandoost.

"When I had to leave my family and my home in Iran, the first things I packed in my bag were my belt, my dobok, my shoes and my mitt for taekwondo," Noghandoost said . "I took some documents that said I was a champion in Iran and in a national team, so I could prove I was a fighter and continue to train in any city I went to."

"Taekwondo did not only help me physically; mentally, it stopped me from thinking about giving up and that we wouldn’t make it. I used this strength to survive," he added.

Noghandoost has worked as a coach for refugees in Croatia, where he has tried to pass the power of sport on to the next generation.

"When you’re living in a refugee camp, it’s a really hard situation, but when you play sport, you can release any negative energy and feel free. It’s a space – a paradise – for them to be themselves."

A member of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team Rio 2016, Yiech Pur Biel says that the team provided a message of hope for those watching around the world.

"We were ambassadors for a message of hope, that anything is possible," Biel said . "A good thing had come out of our situations. The world understood. I am called a refugee, but you never know when someone else might become a refugee, through war or persecution. We wanted to show that we responded positively. So that made me very happy. Through sport, we can unite and make the world better."

Sport as a tool for much - including mental health

Sport is a powerful tool no matter from what angle you look at it, including mental health. The Olympic Refugee Foundation (ORF) has recently launched two different programs that are aimed at helping young refugees dream of a brighter future - through sport.

One of those programs, Game Connect, is a three-year initiative that was launched in August 2020 and aims to "improve the mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of young refugees by improving their access to safe sport," as explained on Olympics.com last year.

We are "embarking on a three-year project to improve the psychosocial wellbeing and mental health of young refugees, working together with well-trained community-based coaches to deliver a Sport for Protection program and activities," explained Karen Mukiibi of Youth Sport Uganda, which has partnered with the ORF.

Sport is an Important Part of Life

Here I shall persuade you that sport is an important part of life and one that would severely damage our country if it were removed. I explain how competition is important because of the many functions it serves within our country and our community.

Sport offers competition without violence

This is true for most sports, although there are a few sports where violence is expected such as hockey. Otherwise sport is about matching physical fitness and wit with other participants. That is one of the great things about sport and is why it is an important part of life and our society.

Sport can bring people together

It brings together teams of people who would not have usually been seen together. This includes people in teams and includes people who go to watch sports. Teams tend to have supporters that are there together as a big group supporting what they love. Sport is able to bring people together which is why it is important within our lives.

Sport makes people feel as if they belong

Some people may be socially awkward and have no friends, but if they have a little sporting ability then they will be made welcome in sports. Even if they have no friends they will not be picked last in a team, they will be made to feel like part of the group.

Sport encourages good health

It is a great motivator and has people going out and taking exercise. It is something that even makes spectators want to get into shape. It is quite common for more people to join gyms and start taking more exercise when big sporting events exist.

Sport has been around as long as homo-sapians have

All types of sport are important to us because they have been around since humans first started to walk upright. They are a deep part of our competitive and playful base instincts. It is no coincidence that infant animals play with each other and compete. It is because such behavior is genetically programmed into them. The same is true of humans and we may enjoy such activities because we have sports.

Sports are a good thing because they help to stop violence and help people come together in harmony. Sports help us to release our competitive urges and help us get more exercise. Sport is a great motivator for people to get into shape and is also a business that generates millions for our country. Sport provides a lot of jobs for people and the elements within sport such as competition, exercise and working as a team have been around for a long time. Sport embodies the ideas of friendly competition and may work on a very healthy team basis. Joining a group so that the group may complete a task or a goal is a very good thing for humans as humans are pack animals. It helps to build interpersonal bonds and often has elements of wish fulfillment within, not to mention elements of camaraderie.

Sports are considered as a vital medium for the overall development of a child, of course apart from the academics. Of late, India has seen a rise in the interest shown by the youth and the old alike in various sports. There has been a boom of talent and we have seen Indian players winning medals in sports which did not even exist in the country some time back.

Audience: The below given essays are exclusively written for school students (Class 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 Standard) and college students.

Introduction:

Having known and experienced the importance of sports, World’s No.1 professional tennis player, Billie Jean King once said: “Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose – it teaches you about life.”

Life Lessons:

All life lessons could be learnt while playing sports. Since it builds up good habits, confidence, discipline, and makes one strong, the importance of sports could never be denied. Only few sportsmen emerge victorious and win laurels, but the sportsmanship developed through the learning, gives all players the opportunity to become great leaders with strong team spirit, useful for the society.

Conclusion:

Sports is the seed for the overall development of one’s personality. Therefore, the importance of sports should never be underestimated. It should be given due importance at par with education and career.

Do you remember your childhood when you used to play a lot of outdoor games both in school as well as at home? What a great time it was? However, with the introduction of mobile and computer, students today are too hooked to the screens that they do not spend enough time playing as they should ideally do. But, sports are integral for the development of the child as the academics.

Why are Sports so Important?

Involvement in games and other physical exercises can have numerous advantages for kids. Participation in games offers the possibility for youth to improve their physical and social abilities. A balance is required to be maintained in investing time in academics as well as sports to ensure proper development in terms of physical, aptitude and mental abilities. Sports offer youngsters a change from the stress of their everyday life. It is likewise a helpful method for amusement and physical action for them.

Gaining Popularity of Different Sports:

However, over the last few years, there has been an increase in the interest shown by people of all age groups in different sports. In fact, we have seen India winning medals in various new areas of sports such as shooting and boxing, the recent most example of Mary Kom winning her sixth title. This has definitely been a motivation for the kids and they have started taking interest in sports like never before. Never did we have so many academies of different sports in our neighbourhood offering to train the kids in a clean and professional manner. India can surely see itself standing bright in the field of sports as well.

Growing up and going to school, I have always been engaged in sports without even knowing the importance of sports in education. Most people just enjoy sport activities without knowing what role it plays in their wellbeing or in education. Sports is encouraged in schools because it plays a central role in the lives of students both physically and career wise. Sports activities are incorporated in education for both young and old students. Importance of sports in education is the development of physical stamina of students among others. There is also the aspect of increased academic achievement when sports in incorporated into education.

Importance of Sports in Education:

Physical fitness is achieved through sports. Physical fitness enables the health, wellbeing and achievement of normal weight. An observation I have made in schools is that, the students who are not involved in sports activities are either overweight or obese whereas those who are involved in sport activities are of normal body weight. Physical fitness is important in prevention of diseases.

Another importance of sports in education is the academic achievements. Sports enable a state of mental wellbeing and a peace of mind. Students tend to learn well when their state of mind is peaceful.

A competitive nature of students is established in competitions related to sports. The competitive mindset in students help them to be aggressive in achieving their goals.

Sports involvement of students is crucial. Importance of sports in education is not only academic but also in health.

“Winners never quit and quitters never win.” -Vince Lombardi

There are so many sports and games which are played by players all over the world. Players need to have a competitive streak and yet at the same time, it is important to handle loses in the right manner too.

The above quote by Lombardi applies very well to sports and games as it goes on to teach as to what truly makes a sportsman standout. In any game, there is bound to be a winner and a loser. However, there is a lot of difference between a loser and quitter.

Not giving up:

When you are engaging in sports and games, you need to know that failure isn’t the absence of success, but it is merely a delay in success. Do not let one lost game deter your spirit. If you are a true sportsperson, you will bounce back and give an even better performance.

True sportsperson do not believe in quitting, they will fight until their last breathe to make sure that they have it in them to handle the different adversities. There are a lot of case studies of various players who battled the adversities and came out on top.

Sports and games tend to bring out the best in too many people. There are endless games and each one of them challenges the players in different ways. When you are in the arena and engaging in sports and games; always member this quote as it will fuel your spirit and give you the confidence to achieve your target.

Focus is always the key and another foremost point for game involving group is to know how to take your team forward. If you can be a team player and inspire your whole group to make collective effort as a single entity, you might become a force to be reckoned with.

To put it simply, sports and games are activities we do for fun and love. While some might do both for financial gains, the majority of people simply enjoy playing a game or engaging in sport. Also, the two concepts are similar but are not the same. Although, they always seem to go hand in hand. This essay explores the importance of sport and games.

Importance of Sports and Games in improving Relations and Strengthening Bonds:

Games based on any sporting activity have remained a critical factor in repairing relationships. From the times of the ancient Greece and Romans, these activities have been used to end wars, repair relationships and as a source of entertainment.

The Coliseum in ancient Rome was a popular sporting arena. In modern times, the Olympics have been a medium for countries to come together and interact with one another amicably.

Importance of Sport and Games in Health:

Sports and games aids in improving the health of a person in various ways. Participating in one or both activities aids in reducing blood pressure, improving muscle and joint functions amongst other things.

Aside from the above mentioned, the importance of sports and games can be found in improved mental wellness of any person. This is because it takes discipline and self-development to commit to healthy sports and games activities. Thus, being committed to sports results in strong self-esteem and awareness. They also help in managing insomnia by improving sleeping capacities and relieving stress.

Finally, sports and games have been a great way to keep fit and shed excess weight. Weight loss is usually a difficult process to go through. Conducting physical exercise can however become easier if done as a sporting exercise. This is because sports is fun. Hence the participant loses him/herself in the process.

Whatever your reason for participating, there is definitely no dull moment in a sporting or gaming event. Fun is the basic importance of sport and games.

Essay on Importance of Sports – In Education ( Essay 6 – 400 Words)

One of the famous sayings is “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy,” and it is correct to a great extent too. Lacking a well- balanced approach in the direction of education will only provide a child disproportionate viewpoint. If the child only concentrates on the study then, he cannot value the other important aspects of the life i.e., importance of sports in education.

There are so many people in the world who consider importance of sports in education as a full wastage of time. They think that the child must utilize his time in studying and learning only. But, now there is a need to change such thinking as importance of sports in education possesses its benefits.

There are so many benefits which show the importance of sports in education that a child gets during the lifespan:

1. Makes the Child Responsive and Active:

The invention of computers, internet, and TV has made the kids to live a sedentary lifestyle. It is resulting in numerous lifestyle ailments like heart issues, obesity, diabetes, etc., in them at a very early age. With the aim of combating these problems, it is essential to teach them about the outdoor games that comprise the specific amount of physical exercises.

2. Growing Psychological Abilities:

The importance of sports in education not only enhances the physical strength of the child but also increases their mental capability. During the sports in education, the child is educated to polish his problem resolving skills, having quick decisions, and overcome the pressure circumstances on the ground.

3. Development of Sportsmanship Spirit:

The spirit of sportsmanship teaches the ways of becoming ethical and is fair in the behavior, endeavours to get a winning approach and even if the kid are in the losing side then also he must be agile in his behavior. This type of outlook is vital in preparing an individual with talents and also helps in facing numerous challenges in life.

4. Commencing Team Building:

A person who is alone cannot win against the team. The team has a more powerful impact than an individual. While teaching the child about importance of sports, he also comes to know the fundamentals of being a sportsperson inside a team. He recognizes that a match might be won only with the help of team co-operation.

A sport is a mode with the help of which a kid is introduced into a different dimension completely. He is exposed to a new outlook to develop his interest and optimistically channelize his efforts to a way. Thus, whenever you search for your child’s right education, don’t forget to think about including the importance of sports activities too. It will assuredly help in the holistic growth of your kid.

In recent days, sports and its practice have been reduced to a single period in a day at schools. Proper sports practicing and training is lacking due to various reasons, which not only is a loss to the students, but also a curse to those who are talented.

Importance and Benefits:

Children spend most time of their day in schools and this institution plays a major role in cultivating good and discipline characteristics in students at an early age. Sports is not just a physical activity that students should be practicing but helps to improve many other characteristics in the person.

Sports not only help you to be physically strong and fit but also helps you to build social and friendly behavior in the students. They will learn to respect each other’s decisions and opinions too. Working and practicing as a team will also create a togetherness and helping mentality in them, which will further be developed in real time too.

It also creates a helping mentality in students to take turns in the play, give way to other teammates and help them in difficult situations, both emotionally and physically. Developing such behaviors will further help the students to be friendlier with other schoolmates and thus being more social in their future career as well.

Studies have proved that students engaged in sports activities possess more physical and mental health than those without such practices. They are also most likely to stay away from anything that reduces their strengths, both physical and mental, like drugs smoking, etc., as these habits will reduce their abilities.

Playing as a team will increase the decision-making ability, leadership quality and helping mentality in students that will also help them to excel in their future as well. These sports will also help in developing a better thought towards goal setting, planning, making strategies towards success. Practicing a right way of sporting will grow in you the ability to be honest and be fair with others all the time.

Role of School in Student Development through Sports:

Rather than restricting sports and physical practices to a single period, schools should identify talented students and help them develop their talent through perfect practices. Not only talented students but also ordinary students should be made to practice sports so that they can develop good abilities in them including physical strength.

Schools should provide both supervised and unsupervised sports practices that help students to select the sports of their interest. More supervision and restrictions may create negative impacts, but providing good sports equipment and environment will definitely help in the positive growth of a student from a younger age.

Games and sports are physical activities that are involved in development of skills of a competitive nature. Basically, two groups or more, compete against one another for a prize or sometimes for just entertainment. There is a need to sporting activities for both women and men, old and young as it improves mental, physical and sometimes the financial health of a person.

Sports plays a lot of great roles in the strengthening of a nation by building and improving the health and character of the citizens of the nation. Sports bring activeness and speed to our way of acting. Sports can also be said to be any form of competitive and physical activity that people play through organised or causal participation. It helps all of us improve and also to maintain skills and physical ability. It can serve as a means of entertainment.

The importance of sports and games can never be overlooked as it is very necessary. There are various reasons a person can be involved in sports, a person can engage in sporting activities for their own professional growth and as well as for personal reasons. It is a good thing for both girls and boys to build very fine physiques. It helps people become strong, mentally alert, and physically fit.

A peaceful mind and good health are two of the most important and amazing benefits of games and sports. Sporting activities are more beneficial to the youth and youths should try to engage in more sporting activities. Youths can become more active, healthy, punctual and disciplined and will be able to cope easily with almost any form of difficult situation in both their professional and personal life. Engaging in sporting activities can help to overcome tension, anxiety and nervousness.

Sports is important as it helps in improving physiological functions and performance of the organs of the body and hence regulates the functioning of the whole body in a very positive way. It also helps in the maintenance of the health of the body and hence keeps the mind sharp, peaceful and active with an improved rate of concentration and focus.

Sports and games help in boosting the mind and body’s energy level and power. Sports and games give us the needed break from our everyday monotonous and boring life. A career in sports is also a huge possibility for youths that are interested in sports. They only need to focus fully on sports with maximum dedication.

Sports and games teach us to work in teams by helping us develop a sense of trying to cooperate with others and building and improving team-spirit. Sports can make both a nation and a person financially strong so it should be encouraged by teachers, parents and the government. If a country has many famous athletes and sport personalities, the athletes get to promote the name of the country and get the name of the country worldwide. This also serves as an extra motivation to the youths of such country to also engage in sporting activities.

Everyone wants to remain fit and healthy in life. People follow a varied lifestyle to keep up with their body fitness. Yoga, exercises, and diet control are some of the techniques that people use to keep their body fit.

Sport is also such an engaging physical activity with unique advantages. The advantage has physical, mental and social dimensions. Popular sports like football, cricket and basketball demand vigorous physical involvements. But the intellectual dimension of sports activities is also as important as physical engagements.

The crucial decision making, spatial judgments, reflex reactions, time management in the field, stress management and many other life/social skills can acquire through sports activities. Hence, sports not only keep one physically healthy but mentally and socially fit also.

The following paragraphs would explain the importance of sports considering physical, mental and social dimensions.

Physical Health Benefits:

Physical importance of sports are explicit. Sports demand laborious and robust muscular and bodily movements. Such movements help to burn the fat and bad cholesterol of one’s body and control body weight. The physical movements accelerate the blood circulation and assist in the proper functioning of body organs like heart and brain. It helps to strengthen the muscles and bones of those who engage in sports activities.

Sports like swimming are recommended by many researchers for its potential to energize every muscle. Improved and relaxed sleep is another advantage of sports activity. The flexibility of joints decreases the possibility of the misalignments and fractures of bones.

Mental Health Benefits:

Though people know the direct physical importance of sports, they are ignorant about the psychological and social health benefits of sports. Many researchers find that children who engage in sports activities demonstrate and nurture high practical skills. Also, children playing sports cultivate positive competitive spirit and sportsmanship.

Children active in sports show a reasonable rate of reflex reactions and problem-solving skills. Sports is also good at managing stressful atmosphere and taking right decisions. These children possess a high degree of confidence and tend to be self-motivated. Besides, people who enjoy or practice sports do not face much isolation and experience negligible rate of depression.

Nowadays, many people tend to engage in indoor games, and they restrict their children also from playing outdoor for several reasons. But many parents are ignorant about the benefits of outdoor sports and training. When parents do not permit their children to play sports outdoors apprehending that their children may get wounded, the parents do not realize that they are giving them bad health habits. Moreover, when they restrict their children this way, they teach their children to escape from risks and problems.

Social Health Benefits:

Many youths face certain social restraints to meet and interact with the public, which is rampant. But the children who have been active participants in sports from childhood have shown healthy social skills. Such personalities manage to show greater emotional quotient than others.

Children who are active in sports are good at working as a team, and they show better coordination skills. They develop good peer relations as well as intra-personal relations. The sports training in which these children have undergone will help them to stay disciplined throughout their life. The life of many famous sportspersons is a testimony to the world.

Though many people consider sports as a leisure activity, the systematic training and practice of sports give a better result to both children and adults. Sports also must not be regarded as a game for the people who are tall and less fat. Whatever may be the physical outlook, a sporty person’s body always looks fit and healthy than others. Thus sports are not a mere leisure activity, but a way to develop one’s body, mind, and spirit.

The importance of sports is one of those topics that cannot be stressed enough and with good reason. Exercise is not only good for you it is important if you want to stay healthy throughout your life. Every life phase has its own limits but thankfully people figured out exercise techniques that will suit almost anybody.

Merely listing all the benefits will not be enough for you to understand why it is important to work out as often as possible. The thing is, there are complex physiological changes that happen on a biological level that make the sports so good for us. So, I would like to talk about exercise in depth and explain further what exactly makes such activities good for you.

Modern man is placed in an urban setting that restrains his movement and inhibits his ability to use his body to the fullest. When you look at urbanization historically Homo Sapiens has been around for at least a 100 thousand years and out of that we have lived in an urban surrounding (a city) for the past 10 thousand years. Mankind led a nomadic lifestyle for most of its existence and this certainly makes our bodies predisposed for certain things. This is not just a point to think about but an actual fact that demonstrates the importance of sports and has implications for our health.

The human body needs regular exercise because we tend to eat far more than our modern and urban living demands of us. Therefore, we constantly have access to energy that will build up over time and cause different health problems. On the other hand, recent research shows that regular exercise helps the body to regulate its homeostasis by flushing out certain hormones that build up because of the stressful jobs people have.

One of the importance of sports is a healthy mind. Recent research on mental illness shows the importance of sports for the treatment of general depression, anxiety, and addiction-related disorders. Because of the hormone endorphin that helps the body restore its serotonin and dopamine production through the inhibition of cortisol. That might sound complicated but the bottom line is that the body reacts to exercise similarly to how it reacts to antidepressants or opioids, therefore it is helpful for stimulating certain areas of the brain. Exercise is not only good as a type of prevention for sickness it can also be used as medicine.

There are some martial arts that base their philosophy on taming the mind through the body. One such discipline is Judo and it originated in Japan from the classical forms of Jiu-Jitsu. The founding father of this martial art had an enlightened philosophy behind his teachings and he thought that he could make people stop fighting each other by developing their self- confidence through the practice of a defensive fighting form. His vision has not yet been fulfilled but the benefits of Judo for peoples mental and physical health have been noted and applied in practices. Some countries and educational systems have made this sport a mandatory part of their curriculum. Facts like those prove the importance of sports.

Over-Exercising:

Everything that is good for you can harm you if the dose is not right and the same rule applies for sports. Even though it can help you get better and turn you into a healthier person if you have too much exercise you will actually harm your body. After every period of intense physical exertion, the body needs time to rest and to heal. Modern forms of exercise like the gym place a lot of intense strain on certain muscle groups causing them to tear rapidly. You want to do this if you want your muscles to get stronger but if you work out continuously without resting the body will stop building itself up and it will deteriorate.

You always have to maintain a balance otherwise your body will crash and cause several health issues plus it can take you up to a month to retrieve your previous strength back. Not to mention exercise addiction that has been described in many medical journals as a real condition that some people can suffer from.

All in all, sports is the best way to help your body regulate itself in the urban setting where we do not use our bodies as much as we should. Like with many other things in life you have to maintain the right attitude, stay disciplined and find the right balance and all will be good.

WA, Oregon newspaper cuts show why press support is needed

Brier Dudley

The spate of layoffs and disruption at newspapers across Washington and Oregon, from Everett to Medford and Bend to Astoria, should be a wake-up call.

Residents in affected communities, legislators representing them, civic leaders and philanthropists should consider looking for ways to save their local journalism, if they aren’t already.

Those residents will see how severe the local-news crisis has become in the United States, and how hard it is for much of the country’s voters to stay informed.

The news desert affecting more than half of U.S. counties is spreading into relatively prosperous suburban, coastal areas.

This is hollowing out remaining papers, eroding civic literacy and stoking division as people increasingly get news from social networks and national media more focused on partisan controversies.

I’d encourage local leaders and philanthropists to look through the gloom and consider ways to acquire or support their local outlets or start new ones. Strong, local news sources are not only key to democracy but to civic health and vitality.

New models are proving out regionally and in other states, suggesting that some of these papers can succeed with a fresh start and an infusion of local support. A list of promising models is included the Local News Initiative’s latest report on news deserts.

Options include turning papers into nonprofits or a hybrid, blending a for-profit news outlet with nonprofit support.

The Philadelphia Inquirer was saved from bankruptcy and donated to a nonprofit foundation by a local telecom magnate. It operates as a for-profit subsidiary of the foundation.

The Seattle Times is a for-profit business but sustained and grew local coverage with support from philanthropists and community members.

Another example I wrote about last year is Gig Harbor Now, an online outlet started by community members after layoffs and consolidation by newspaper chains left the area with scant local coverage.

Gig Harbor Now benefited from talented journalists who worked at dailies before cutbacks. Nearly 100 more journalists are now looking for jobs after layoffs announced this month.

Lawmakers representing Washington and Oregon should be reminded by the latest cuts of how urgently government intervention is needed, to save remaining local outlets and incentivize potential new owners.

The U.S. has subsidized the press in various ways since it was formed without compromising the independence of the press. There’s a strong case that the government is obligated by the First Amendment to ensure the press survives.

Refundable tax credits to save newsroom jobs and antitrust reforms to help outlets negotiate better deals with tech gatekeepers have bipartisan support in Congress, including support from most of Washington’s delegation.

Those measures, including tax credits first proposed in the Local Journalism Sustainability Act, would have prevented much of this summer’s newsroom losses. But they seem stalled until 2025.

“We would not be having the conversation about EO Media having layoffs and doing cutbacks and going up for sale if the LJSA had passed,” said Heidi Wright, chief operating officer of the Salem-based newspaper group.

Earlier this month EO disclosed plans to close five Oregon papers, lay off 28 of 185 employees and put itself up for sale.

Simultaneously, Portland-based newspaper publisher Pamplin Media sold to a Southern newspaper chain, Carpenter Media Group.

Then Carpenter decided to layoff 62 employees at Sound Publishing, its recently acquired group of 43 papers in Washington and Alaska.

Affected employees include more than half of the unionized newsroom at The Daily Herald in Everett, as I reported June 18 .

The Herald bobbled the announcement, initially posting a story about the layoffs June 19 in which Publisher Rudi Alcott was quoted saying “readers won’t notice.”

That story appeared in print but was removed from the website and replaced with a toned down version, with a comment from Carpenter, on June 20.

Alcott “said he has been fielding comments about this decision all day,” Caleb Hutton, local news editor, posted on X. “Just said he appreciated us challenging him on this today. Lots of hard lessons learned, I think.”

The Herald layoffs are scheduled to take effect in July. Labor negotiations over the layoffs are scheduled for Friday afternoon, following a one-day strike Monday .

Todd Carpenter, chairman of Carpenter Media, has yet to respond to my request for an interview. I’d like to know why the company is using its resources for more acquisitions instead of strengthening its already skimpy local newsrooms.

He told The Herald the company has “deep sympathy for those affected by these changes” and it is “committed to Everett, The Herald and all who have a stake in its success.”

“Our responsibility to the community and our readers requires us to make difficult business decisions, and then invest in and organize our team to move forward to produce a product that continues to improve and serve,” his statement said. “Our track record in this process is good. We seek to work with the best and brightest and to pay them well. We must have a strong business with highly productive people to meet our standards, and with the help of our team and community we expect to meet them here in the days to come.”

The company on May 1 offered a starting wage of $19.50 per hour, according to the Everett NewsGuild. That’s above the state’s $16.28 minimum wage but below Seattle’s $19.97 minimum for large companies.

For comparison, the Everett McDonald’s is offering 16-year-olds a $19.50 starting wage.

That, too, should be a wake-up call. It shows how desperately solutions, leadership and support are needed, to ensure communities have robust local news sources.

The opinions expressed in reader comments are those of the author only and do not reflect the opinions of The Seattle Times.

Much is left to be determined about the NBA’s looming media rights deal (which per John Ourand of Puck will not be determined until next month at the earliest), but one aspect that does not seem likely to change is that the league is on the verge of a historic windfall.

Between an “A” package of $2.6-$2.8 billion for Disney, a “B” package that Comcast inflated to $2.5 billion and a “C” package worth $1.8 billion for Amazon, the NBA is looking at a combined $6.9 billion per year for more than a decade — more than double the $2.7 billion per year the league has averaged over the past nine years. At a deal term of 11 years, the league would thus earn $76 billion over the course of the deal , exceeding the lofty bar of $75 billion first reported by Jabari Young of CNBC three years ago .

Considering the perception of the NBA’s popularity over the past five years, the coming bonanza has been met in some corners with disbelief. For those under the misconception that NBA ratings have tanked — not merely declined — the prospect of such a massive rights deal must seem incongruous. (Those who spent years promising that the NBA would go ‘broke’ will have to adjust their prognostications.) The league set a seemingly unrealistic bar with that $75 billion figure, and is in line to get everything it wanted — and more — despite a ratings slump that has lasted long enough to constitute a new status quo. How could this be?

The sports ratings hierarchy

Often, the perception of a league’s health as a television property is based on the ratings of its championship series. An NBA Finals (or World Series, or Stanley Cup) constitutes a mere seven games maximum, but those are often the most-watched games of the entire year, and the sports hierarchy is for the general public a measure of each league’s ceiling. On that front, the NBA has lost position.

This year’s NBA Finals averaged 11.3 million viewers on ABC, a respectable figure, if down 3 percent from last year’s unheralded Nuggets-Heat series (11.6M) and the least-watched non-COVID Finals since 2007 . That figure comfortably surpasses last year’s record-low World Series (9.1M), but is just as comfortably behind this year’s NCAA Final Four and National Championship — both the men (13.5M) and the women (13.8M). Nor is it in the same stratosphere as football, which goes without saying.

The NBA maxed out this year at 12.3 million for Game 2 of the NBA Finals , which outside of the 2020 “bubble” was its lowest ceiling since 2007. Not since the pre-COVID year of 2019 has the league gotten to the 14 million mark, a figure that even the World Series has reached more recently (Game 6 in 2021). As far as basketball audiences go, the top NBA audience this year placed fifth, barely eking out Iowa-LSU in the Women’s Elite Eight game for that spot (12.31M to 12.30M).

From such a vantage point, one is hard-pressed to see why the NBA should generate potentially $7 billion per year, compared to a combined $1.2 billion for the college basketball tournaments ($1.1 billion for the men, with the women’s tournament part of a $115 million per year bundle of the remaining NCAA championships). Even the gap between the NBA and Major League Baseball, which is earning just shy of $2 billion per year for its various deals, is confounding from that perspective.

What the NBA has to offer

To explain the seeming incongruity, begin with the fact that the $7 billion/year figure is not for the NBA Finals, but for all the NBA has to offer — nine months of regular season and playoff games, plus an offseason that includes the Draft, Summer League and WNBA (which in the Caitlin Clark era is a significantly stronger draw than before ). There were 239 NBA games with at least one million viewers during the 2023-24 season, more than any other sport except for college football (251). (Including the WNBA and NBA Summer League, which as noted are bundled with NBA rights, that total rises to 249 as of Sunday.) The NFL, it should be noted, had 141 telecast windows total across its 2023-24 regular season and playoffs.

Inventory is the most important factor in sports television, which is why the NFL added an 18th week, the NBA added the In-Season Tournament, and the NCAA is weighing expansion of its basketball tournaments. For all the complaints about the length of the NBA season, having 1,231 regular season/In-Season Tournament games and as many as 105 playoff games that span the entire television season is a significant advantage. (The league is likely to add more inventory through expansion; two additional teams raises the number of games to 1,313.) The NBA’s ceiling may not be what it used to be, but seven figures is a considerable floor given the volume of telecasts. It is reasonable to imagine the league made said volume a point of emphasis in negotiations.

Yet the league’s strong position cannot be explained by volume alone. It also benefits from having those games spread out over most of the year, culminating in a postseason that fully occupies the Q2 months of April, May and June. The broad decline in television viewing that has helped shrink NBA ratings has conversely made it more valuable to advertisers, clearing the field of competition and leaving the league as the primary driver of Q2 ad sales. Over 43 nights of playoff games, the NBA was the most-watched programming 20 times and topped the charts nearly every night in the key adult demographics of 18-34 (41 times), 18-49 (42) and 25-54 (42).

While some have questioned the importance of demographics, it is the case that adults under 35 are simply not watching linear television to any significant degree. Game 4 of this year’s Finals, a historic dud on the court and in the ratings, averaged 47 percent of the viewers in the demographic watching television that night. To be clear, not many of them were. Yet if one wanted to reach adults 18-34 on a Friday night in June, there was only one easily-measured, ad-supported place where they were congregating en masse, and it was not YouTube or Twitch.

If the NBA is the only show in town in Q2 and among young adults, it should be no surprise that advertisers continue to pay a premium regardless of the ratings. Citing data from the analytics company EDO, MediaPost reported this month that NBA Finals ad revenue had increased 40 percent through Game 3, even coming off of a middling performance for last year’s Nuggets-Heat series.

Right place, right time

Timing and opportunity are also significant factors. The NBA came to market as the last big fish available for the next four-to-five years, not exactly an eternity, but enough time for the industry to change significantly. The league was perfectly positioned to capitalize on a transition period between cable and streaming, wherein cable is trying to stave off its death throes and streaming is trying to establish itself as a sufficient alternative.

Cable, with its burdensome contracts, equipment and fees, succeeded for years because there was no alternative. For generations, people who never watched sports still paid for ESPN because they needed their HGTV. Streaming ended that era by offering those viewers the opportunity to watch their favorite shows — none of which were time-sensitive — via cheaper options like Netflix and Hulu. (Add to that the generational change wrought by young people who prefer YouTube to any linear programming.) Even so, the cable business model was so strong that even today, it remains a better financial play than streaming. Licensing one’s programming at a premium to cable operators is far more lucrative, and less involved, than creating and selling one’s own streaming platform — and doing so without the benefit of a bundle that includes all the programming a viewer would conceivably want.

Both cable and streaming are in a vulnerable position in which sports programming is important, if to varying degrees. Sporting events are the only time-sensitive, exclusive programming in all of television and thus are the final pillars keeping the cable bundle from total collapse, a dependency that does not yet exist on the streaming side. Sports are not the sole reason why viewers subscribe to streaming services — which may explain why streamers have been relatively circumspect in their pursuit of live rights — but they are a key defense against one of streaming’s greatest weaknesses: churn.

Per The Wall Street Journal , Comcast plans to split about half of what would be a 100-game NBA package between the NBC broadcast network and Peacock . A 50-game Peacock schedule, assuming once-a-week doubleheaders, would constitute 25 weeks of programming — or the span of the entire regular season. Assuming exclusivity, fans of the league’s glamour teams would need to have Peacock at any point between October and April in order not to miss a game. Churn is one of the biggest problems in streaming, as it is no problem whatsoever to sign up for a service and quickly drop it. A two-week YouTube TV free trial covers nearly the entirety of March Madness. Not only is Peacock set for an influx of NBA fans who have not subscribed to the service previously, but it is in line to keep them as subscribers throughout most of the year.

The same goes for Amazon, though churn is not nearly as significant an issue for a company that bundles its Prime Video service with its much more popular online shipping business. For Amazon, simply getting the great mass of Prime subscribers to even recognize that they have Prime Video is half the battle. NFL rights are of course the big differentiator, but it cannot hurt to have a full year of the NBA on the side.

Now and later

The NBA entered negotiations as a have-to-have for ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery — even if David Zaslav did not realize it — and a good-to-have for Comcast and Amazon. All four bidders were motivated (or in the case of WBD, should have been) to either keep or secure rights to the only major sports programming up for bid in the medium term.

ESPN is not going to get the NCAA Men’s Final Four and National Championship, which are locked up until 2032. It is not going to get the World Series (if one wanted to argue that it is a better value), as that is locked up until 2028. It is finally in the Super Bowl rotation, but just once every four years. There are a select few major championships that are decided annually on the ESPN networks. Losing — or even just sharing — one of them was not an option for Disney, which made keeping exclusive rights to the Finals a priority in its negotiations .

For Amazon and Comcast — which it bears noting are set to pay nearly two-thirds of the NBA’s reported rights fee without any Finals rights at all – missing out on the NBA would mean going potentially four or five years before the next opportunity to bulk up their sports offerings. While Amazon would not suffer too harshly, given its weekly NFL game, Peacock needs more than the occasional Big Ten or NFL exclusive. By the time the next opportunity rolls around, there is no guarantee the service will even exist. (Beyond the need to overpay in order to beat incumbent Warner Bros. Discovery’s bid, the relative needs of Peacock and Prime Video may explain the $700 million/year difference in their offers.)

It may seem a bit galling that the NBA’s rights fees will be far closer to those of the NFL than to Major League Baseball, even as its ratings are far closer to the latter than the former. So be it. There is nothing else soon on the market with the league’s combination of inventory and viewership, and the state of the industry is such that these opportunities are not easy to pass up.

The 2022 World Series finished ahead of the last two NBA finals and this years had a legacy team with the Celtics. ESPN makes it sound like America swarms towards the NBA and that is furthest from the truth. Who will pay for peacock to watch a meaningless game? This site confirmed MLB has much stronger ratings regionally so paying extra for streaming games seems like a stretch.

Whats does this do for the non-Big4+CFB? Will we see WNBA, UFC or UFL start getting ever higher $$? The bottomline is TV destroyed itself with messaging while committing the cardinal sin of not being Entertaining. No more Seinfeld or like comedies, dramas are melodramatic, TV (streaming, broadcast or cable) in general isn’t any good. Its been declining for years, ie less entertaining. Now Sports – its reality TV without the fake, its entertainment without the melodrama or messaging, its action, its new and its not meant to be rewatched or watched later. Sports is the holy grail of entertainment and people love it. They prefer it on free broadcast or non-premium cable/streaaming, but they will stream some. Streaming is a chore though, its not easy to find something good to watch, its not easy to “flip” the channel and its cumbersome vs TV. Lets see how media plays out over the next few years, perhaps cable will become more flexible and maintain a core and just offer streaming like they do now via premium channels. At any rate NBA should enjoy the ride, its getting over paid now but will regret the long contract.

Excellent Quantitative analysis especially with the number of games that exceeded 1M. So, as WBD seeks to replace the NBA with a hodgepodge of different sports, it will be interesting to see if they can replicate the success of the NBA studio show, even at a much lower viewer number. Inside the NBA studio show mostly performed in the top 10 cable shows of the night, with quite a few over 1M, with rest almost always above 700K.

Thanks for this article Jon, it’s very helpful. Two things still confuse me:

1) the small gap between the NFL and the NBA still surprises. The NFL has almost as much 1+M watched inventory once you account for game length, but peak viewership is like 5x per equivalent window. Why is the premium to reach 5x the audience so low?!

2) the article frames NCAAF and NBA broadcasts are perhaps the most comparable. Yet isn’t again the NBA getting like 2x or more of all the college leagues combined?

The bit about the number of windows over 1M is fantastic work and really is the whole game here. It’s also why I’ve wondered for years why the NBA doesn’t schedule more regular season games on Saturday/Sunday afternoons and late nights to both create new windows of audiences that can draw decently (even if only on local TV it would add value for League Pass as well as international viewership) and have less audience cannibalization when they have 8+ simultaneous games on Sat/Sun nights.

Live sports is the safest bet on TV (and streaming, especially after the NFL Peacock game). It’s much easier to be in bed with a sports league than make a hit TV series. This is why you saw the rumor of entertainment people at NBC freaking out about the NBA deal. They know their budgets will continue to get cut to make room for more sports leagues. It’s also why despite all the handwringing, MLB will clean up very well for themselves in a few years when rights are available.

Winner’s curse.

Good for the Association, its players all the support staff that get the product ready for the public and hopefully the future portends even greater things

But there’s still that pesky curse

The answer is simple: The reason for its value is media coverage. The ratings and even the quality of the games are not worth it. The media has simply positioned the NBA as the league that “everyone” “must” watch. They are doing it with the WNBA and now “everyone” “must” love and watch Caitlin Clark. It is only positioning or the agenda, the power of the media, the other leagues have not been chosen to be positioned. I assure you this: even the NFL or the CFB are far behind in media coverage and the media agenda.

I respectfully disagree with this. The NFL gets plenty of year-round coverage everywhere. It just happens that the league is on its annual “summer vacation” from late-June to late-July.

CFB is a bit different as it’s still highly regionalized in terms of perceived coverage/importance. It feels like “everything” in some markets, and much less so in others. Add in its bigger size (120+ D1 schools) and it’s naturally less friendly to national media outside of the playoffs and a few marquee matchups.

Theoretically, how much would it cost to acquire the rights to the top 25 network TV shows? It seems like it would be rather easy to purchase multiple shows for much less that bring a larger total audience, a larger 18-34 demographic and a larger total inventory while spending much less than 7B a year.

yeah, but shows jump the shark after a certain period. It seems likes sports does not.

$5.7B gets you 1-3 & 14 in total viewership & 1-4 in 18-49 (NFL Sunday Night, Monday Night, Thursday Nights) but the top 20 ex-NFL in total viewership is 14 CBS shows and NBC’s “Chicago” shows and I’m not sure CBS is who anyone wants to be right now.

Why Micah Parsons is the Dallas' most important contract extension

Randy gurzi | jun 23, 2024.

Dallas Cowboys, Micah Parsons

  • Dallas Cowboys | News, Scores, Schedules & Standings

CeeDee Lamb is holding out, and Dak Prescott could command somewhere close to $60 million. In the end, Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News believes the Dallas Cowboys will have to find a way to commit more than $85 million to these two players.

As concerning as that might be for Jerry and Stephen Jones, those two aren't even the most essential extensions the Cowboys' brain trust has to figure out. That distinction belongs to linebacker Micah Parsons, who has become one of the more dominant pass-rushers in the NFL.

Selected No. 12 overall, out of Penn State in 2021, Parsons is already 13th in franchise history with 40.5 sacks. He could continue to climb the ranks as one of the best in their history, especially since he is still entering his prime after turning 25 in May.

MORE: Micah Parsons embraces 'privilege' of criticism as he aims for greatness

That's why Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report says extending Parsons is more critical than Lamb or Prescott, adding that while those two are the tops at their position, Parsons is on the way toward such a status.

"The case can be made here for QB Dak Prescott and WR Ceedee Lamb, but neither of the aforementioned offensive stars are considered the top player at their position in the NFL. A dominant force off the edge, Micah Parsons has arguably evolved into the most feared defensive player in the game today." — Ryan Fowler, Bleacher Report

Parsons has one more season under contract than Lamb and Prescott, who are in the final year of their respective deals. After electing to pick up the fifth-year option in his rookie deal, Parsons is under contract through the 2025 season with a cap hit of just $5.43 million, which will leap to $21.32 million in 2025 .

For several seasons, the Jones family has elected not to set the market, which continues to bite them in negotiations. They can't afford to do this with Parsons, who could see his salary demands get out of control with another monstrous season.

Instead, it would be wiser to actually set the market for once and then let the rest of the league pay more for their pass-rushers, who won't be as good as Parsons.
