sap business planning and consolidation 11 0

With the release of BPC 11, BW/4HANA now has fully developed Planning and Consolidation capabilities that are above and beyond prior versions of BPC. Highlights include:

  • Web worksheets are now available, allowing browser-based planning and reporting, with multiple planning objects in one screen
  • Integration with SAP Analytics cloud means syncing plan data from end users who are purely cloud based
  • New customizable HTML5 interface which includes visualization capabilities and task navigation similar to Business Process Flows
  • Advanced performance achieved through HANA processing and Advanced Data Store Objects (aDSO, no longer InfoCubes or classic DSO)
  • Standard and Embedded model choices are still available
  • Microsoft Excel integration still available with Analysis for Office and EPM interfaces

Advanced Analytics:

SAP BPC 11.0 brings built-in, real-time analytics into the application’s Web Client.  Users can easily create graphs and charts to visualize variances.  Additionally, these can be shared amongst colleagues and attached to reports or pinned to the home screen as a favorite.

One key benefit to emphasize is that by integrating with SAP Analytics Cloud, BPC can directly utilize the Predictive Analytics functionality to generate new insights from Plan and Actuals data. Predictive Analytics is also helpful for uncovering the true drivers of business variance.

sap business planning and consolidation 11 0

With the world moving rapidly towards the cloud, SAP BPC 11.0 offers a tempered pace at which organizations can move their planning and consolidation platform.  This latest release is available not just on the SAP HEC, but also on AWS, Azure, Virtustream, and other cloud providers.  Finance organizations can have rapid deployments due to the ease of cloud enablement as well as utilize hybrid scenarios, which are quite popular.  The platform can start on premise and then move to the cloud.  Additionally, the integration with SAP Analytics Cloud allows organizations to have part of their platform (SAP BPC) on premise/cloud and then integrate with a public cloud platform for seamless integration.

Integration

Integration has been discussed a few times and it’s more than just bringing data into SAP BPC.  Finance users will clearly benefit from being able to bring data in from SAP S/4HANA and other SAP data sources and non-SAP data sources via the integration that is native in SAP BW/4HANA.   The key is what to do with the integration and why this matters to finance.

Accountants, analysts, controllers, and others will have the ability to bring all actuals (from ERP, logistics, marketing systems, human resources, and others) into SAP BPC to get a true reflection of actuals and compare to plans.  What this leads to ultimately is one powerful financial planning system that allows organizations to perform  true Integrated Financial Planning .

We all know that the CFO resides not just in finance, but in every department (like sales and marketing), every geography, every region—everyone has a finance team providing true fiscal guidance.  Those silos now have the ability to come together in this integrated platform and provide a universal platform for planning.

SAP BW/4HANA also has the ability to capture things like  sentiment analysis , which can be groundbreaking for finance individuals. Such analysis enables them to use market sentiments from Social Media and other sources to judge the direction of the budgets based on real-time market feedback.

Bottom Line

SAP BPC 11.0 with SAP BW/4HANA is poised to be quite the game changer for the office of the CFO and their ability to be a business partner across the enterprise.  With all the tools at their disposal, gone are the days when finance responds with “I’ll get back to you.” Now, they can lead and help drive business decisions. -Bharat Sunkari

SAP Business Planning and Consolidation 11.0

In our previous newsletter , we informed you about the different flavors of SAP BPC. Now we want to focus on the latest version of SAP BPC; SAP BPC 11.0 version for BW 4/HANA. SAP BPC 11.0, version for SAP BW/4HANA is a new release of BPC on the BW/4HANA platform and not on NetWeaver BW.

SAP BW/4HANA is the next generation of SAP Business Warehouse powered by SAP HANA.

Business warehouse (BW) is a combination of databases and database management tools that are used to support management decision making. BW traditionally supported various databases like Oracle, Microsoft, IBM DB2, and many more. However, SAP BW/4HANA is designed to run on SAP HANA only.

SAP HANA is an in-memory data platform that accelerates business processes, delivers more business intelligence, and simplifies the IT environment. SAP HANA primary function as a database server is to store and retrieve data as requested by the applications. In addition, it performs advanced analytics (e.g. predictive analytics) and includes ETL capabilities as well as an application server.

Combining BW and SAP HANA leads to SAP BW/4HANA. SAP BW/4HANA:

  • is a new data warehouse solution
  • is highly optimized for HANA
  • solves analytics problems in seconds
  • accelerates solution development
  • means you have one version of the truth
  • is ready for the internet of things at petabyte scale

Architecture SAP BPC 11.0, version for SAP BW/4HANA

SAP BPC on BW/4HANA still supports both Standard and Embedded models. For a further explanation on the Standard and Embedded model we would like to refer to our previous newsletter .

sap business planning and consolidation 11 0

Figure 1. SAP Business Planning and Consolidation 11.0 version for SAP BW/4HANA

What does the above mean.

The structures in SAP BW/4HANA have been simplified, you can integrate data from SAP and non-SAP sources, larger volumes can be handled, and it’s enabled for both the cloud and/or on premise.

BW/4HANA platform always uses the HANA database. When using BW/4 HANA data will be kept ‘in memory’. This means push down query formula operation to HANA which makes calculations faster.

Also, BW/4 HANA offers a full integration with SAP Analytics Cloud (formerly called BusinessObjects Cloud). This allows users to seamless and quickly sync data back and forth between SAP Analytics Cloud and BPC. SAP offers hybrid planning functionality; supporting Corporate planning in BPC BW/4HANA with SAP Analytics Cloud for light weight business unit planning and/or enhanced visualization.

SAP BPC 11.0 provides a new homepage, a new admin module and new navigation. There are multiple business-user interfaces, depending on the model (Embedded or Standard).

Is this new version interesting for you?

When you consider to implement SAP BPC, SAP BPC 11.0, version for SAP BW/4HANA should be taken into consideration to take all the advantages SAP BPC 11.0, version for SAP BW4/HANA offers; simplification, better performance and modern interface.

For clients currently running BPC NetWeaver, SAP BPC 11.0, version for SAP BW/4HANA could be an option, but depending on your current total system landscape this might be a big step. It is not an upgrade; it is a migration. Analysis should be done to investigate the current use of BW and a migration plan should be written for your specific situation.

SAP S/4HANA and SAP BW/4HANA – Positioning

Currently there are different SAP BPC versions and related products available. Not all products can be combined (yet). For example, BPC 11.0 is only available on BW/4HANA.

SAP BPC BW/4HANA is not the same as BPC optimized for S/4HANA, which we discussed in our previous newsletter . However, the technical drivers for SAP S/4HANA and SAP BW/4HANA are the same. Like SAP S/4HANA, SAP BW/4HANA introduces fundamental changes in data model and/or features which make them both new products. With SAP BW/4HANA being SAP’s strategic platform for Enterprise Data Warehousing, it’s new functionality will enhance the integration with SAP S/4HANA in the long term.

sap business planning and consolidation 11 0

Figure 2. SAP S/4HANA and SAP BW/4HANA Positioning

Do these developments impact the current versions of sap bpc.

No, the introduction of SAP BPC 11.0, version for SAP BW/4HANA doesn’t impact the current versions of SAP BPC. It adds a new flavor. Also, the development of SAP BPC for Microsoft will fully continue.

Creating a new dimension

Dimensions represent the entities of a business (e.g., accounts, company codes, and categories). They represent the master, text, and hierarchy data for each of the business entities.

It is possible to create new dimensions in a BPC application set. There is no restriction to create a number of dimensions in SAP BPC. These dimensions then become shared dimensions that are available for use in any application within the appset.

Some dimensions are required dimensions. It must exist in all the applications within an application set. While the dimension type determines the default properties to be included in the dimension. It is possible to add additional properties as needed.

Dimension types

Required in each application

  • A = Account type dimension
  • C = Category type dimension
  • E = Entity type dimension
  • T = Time type dimension

Required in each application set

  • R = Currency type dimension

Needed to validate currencies that are input in Entity type dimension. This may not be part of any applications within the application set

Required for Intercompany Eliminations

  • I = Intercompany

It is also possible to create additional dimensions as a requirement

Un = User defined dimension type. For each user-defined dimension, the number ‘n’ will be incremented. For e.g; U1, U2, U3 and so on

Creating Dimensions

Select Dimension Library on the left side. The action pane will display the related dimension tasks.

Creating Dimensions

To create a new dimension, click on “Add a new dimension”.

Creating Dimensions

Similarly, it is possible to copy, modify, process and delete dimensions. While adding dimensions, you need to enter reference type.

Next in this SAP BPC training, we will learn about BPC reporting.
