Ielts writing task 2 – the 21st century.

The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century will bring? Use examples and details in your answer.

( 287 Words , 13 Sentences, 4 Paragraphs, Band 9)

Man, through the ages, has undergone many changes from the time when he depicted a herd of mammoths on the walls of his cave to these days when he can create beautiful pictures and even make coffee by use of computer technologies without leaving his favorite chair. The 20th century made huge steps in developing computer technologies and reached many goals that made our life much easier. What should we expect in the 21st century?

First of all, I think that the pace of our life will speed up: we will move faster from one place to another, from one continent to another using high speed jet airplanes. Second of all, I believe that we will be able to do many things that take much time now without leaving our house. Computers will be everywhere including out clothes. Many people will have chips and mini computers inserted in their heads to hold huge amount of information and have a quick access to it.

But what will be the most amazing thing in the 21st century is the flights to the outer space and Mars that will be available to all people. Scientists say that Mars has many things similar to the Earth’s. Moreover, they say that with the help of modern technology people can artificially create conditions that will allow people to live there on the constant basis.

To sum up, I am sure that many amazing changes will be brought by the 21st century. Furthermore, I think that with the help of the contemporary technologies people can do many things that were even difficult to imagine a century ago. So, nowadays it is rather difficult and even impossible to imagine all changes that will happen in the next decades.

( NB: Follow the above writing structure for getting higher IELTS band score in the examination. This sample answer can be an example of good writing out of many possible approaches.)

About the article

Opinion essay (100% agreement), people living in the 21st century have a better quality of life than people who lived in previous times. to what extent do you agree or disagree.

It is an undeniable fact that the world has been advancing rapidly since the beginning of this century. While some argue that the former times were better, others insist that people enjoy a rather convenient lifestyle today. In my opinion, I believe that due to the evolution of technology, there has been a strong enhancement in the well-being of humans.

Firstly, having access to comprehensive healthcare systems has significantly played a key role in boosting the life-span of humans. The revolutionary developments in the medical sciences have drastically improved health assistance in the current society. For instance, there have been several epidemics throughout history and the fatality rate for diseases such as cholera, plague, measles, and polio have been quite high. In contrast, due to the advancements in medical sciences, these diseases have been nearly eradicated from the planet. While new diseases such as COVID-19 or Monkeypox emerge occasionally, we are better prepared to tackle them efficiently with suitable scientific cures.

Secondly, the tools, gadgets and engineering available in the present is pushing the boundaries of technological breakthroughs. High-speed transportation, gadgets, devices and machines collectively contribute to the quality and convenience of life. For example, decades ago travelling from Japan to Africa would have been a challenging, weeks-long travel, in comparison to a comfortable flight which covers the same distance in just a few hours. Apart from devices and travel, the invention of the internet has truly changed the world in terms of information sharing, connectivity, communication and data access. Such scientific evolvement has resulted in unimaginable and heightened lifestyle benefits.

To conclude, it is undoubtedly true that the present-day standard of living is substantially better than the olden days. In my opinion, the progression in healthcare, engineering and communication have surpassed the previous days and have enhanced the overall life quality in the 21st century.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Speculative essay; The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century will bring? (Sample answer with bonus tips)

In IELTS Writing Task 2 , speculative essays are quite common nowadays. So, it needs proper attention and care. We need to have a clear idea and a setting to write this kind of essays. So, in this post, I’m going to show you how to write any speculative essay easily.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Speculative essay; The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century will bring? (Sample answer with bonus tips)

First, look at the title below.

The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century will bring? Use examples and details in your answer.

Instruction for this task:

As you can see, the question is pretty straightforward with a very short scenario or stem. Now, if you follow closely, you will find that the question sentence has a future tense structure. So, the task required for you is to provide your answer in future tense mostly and this is called speculation.

As usual, you have to do a short mind-mapping for this writing. Without it, the writing will be scattered. So, make sure you do a mind map before you start to write.

Think of some future prospects that the 21st century will bring for us. For example, fast work, fast communication, space travel, the supercomputer taking charge, upgraded computers etc. Remember, you cannot write too much. So, just think of 4/5 major developments that may happen in the future. Here, you need not be accurate. Only put your ideas in a logical order.

Include an introductory paragraph and a closing paragraph with two body/explanatory paragraphs. Try to make the introductory paragraph and closing paragraph catchy and smart. This will do the trick.

The structure will look like this:

Paragraph 1: Introduce the topic with some background information.

Paragraph 2: Include two major improvements that you think will be dominant  (with examples) like fastest communication, development in work speed, etc.

Paragraph 3: Include one more development that may become the talk of the time like space exploration

Paragraph 4: Conclude the essay with a positive tone, you can compare the improvements between the past century and the present century

Here is an example answer that I’ve made for you. It’s a band  8.0 writing. If you face problems regarding the unknown or difficult words I used in this answer, you will find explanations of the words below the sample answer.

Model answer:

Since the dawn of human civilization, the process of gathering knowledge has been taught to us by nature through various changes. There is ample evidence of changes in the lifestyle of primitive people which have been discovered in ancient caves and grottos by modern scientists. Yet, up until the 19th century, the progress made was quite slow. With the opening of the 20th century, our progress has been so swift that the 21st century will surely take us where none have ever ventured before.

First and foremost, our lifestyle will definitely become faster than ever. I believe firmly that we shall be using some of the fastest ways of communication and warp speed will be available in space. Additionally, our speed of work will increase dramatically as swift machines will save our important time more and more. Supercomputers will take the place of important personnel in imperative places. Computers will work just like a magic wand as the signal through sound and eye contact will be further upgraded.

The breakthrough in the field of cosmology will happen in the 21st century which, I assume, will change the way we think about space. We shall be able to travel from our planet to other planets and the moon at a reasonable price. Moreover, the space journey will not be very nerve-racking as medical science will radically improve the quality of medications.

In conclusion, the world will be a completely different place in the coming century. Though it might sound a bit fanatical to many, we can easily take an example from the past century and compare it with the present one. Therefore, the 21st century will be true as we have watched in sci-fi movies and the progress of human civilization will be incomparable.

(286 words)

This is the end of the answer.

Explanations of important vocabulary:

Dawn= start, the beginning Ample= sufficient Lifestyle= way of life Primitive= ancient Venture= going somewhere risky Warp speed= a lightning speed which can only be gained in space Personnel= important human resource Imperative= very crucial Magic wand= a stick from which magical power flows (as in the film series Harry Potter) Assume= to guess Breakthrough= a significant development Cosmology= the study of the origin and nature of the universe Reasonable= cheap; not costly Nerve-racking= extremely tensed or worried Fanatical= Crazy; wild; mad Incomparable= without equal

Bonus tips:

Add as much unknown vocabulary as you can. It will not only make your writing look different from others but also increase your band score radically.

I sincerely hope that you have found this post interesting enough and learned a few things. Please, post your problems as comments and I’ll further suggest you on how to tackle the problems.

IELTS Writing Task 2: 21st Century Optimism

Many people are optimistic of the 21st century and see it as an opportunity to make positive changes to the world. To what extent do you share their optimism? What changes would you like to see in the new century?

Possible scenarios It is often believed that the 21st century can trigger lots of improvements to the planet and not only (1) . As far as I am concerned I remain reluctant to the course of this incredible period (2) . First and foremost, throughout this century people have created and innovated to an astonishing extent. The release of computers all around the world generated an overwhelming impact to the lifestyles of many (3) . Moreover, this discovery combined with later breakthroughs such as free network, cell phones and drones enabled the population to communicate in real time despite enormous distances. However, mankind also managed to create great threads to its existence (4) . Nuclear bombs and climate change, although seemingly different they both share in common the same danger we are faced (5) . In addition, recent economical crisis ensued in drastic drawbacks at a global scale, hence raising unemployment, crime and inequality (6) . Therefore, thus far more harm was caused than creating possible solutions leading to a better world (7) . Last but not the least, my level of confidence into human’s potential still remains positive (8) .Provided that we use all the supplied information and make astute decisions some changes, aiming for the better, might appear. For instance, I would like to live in an era where war represents a strange word. Conflicts in the Middle East can cease through rational thinking and peaceful agreements. Furthermore, a drastic decline in the level of pollution can take place if everybody offers help towards this cause. Lastly, my preference regards raising awareness about individual rights as a mean to reduce the gender inequality index (9) . Having the aforementioned being said the future seems blurry for our behaviour can never be precisely predicted (10) . 285 words

The commentaries are marked in brackets with number (*). The numbered commentaries are found below. The part in  italics  is taken from the text, the word  underlined  is the suggested correction. Words in (brackets) are the suggested addition to the original phrase or sentence.

  • It is often believed that the 21st century can bring/bring about lots of improvements to the planet and beyond — trigger is not used with ‘improvements’. If you are unsure whether words collocate, try googling your phrase or use services like Ludwig . ‘To the planet and not only’ sounds like literal translation of something used in your own language. I have slightly altered it.
  • As far as I am concerned I remain skeptical about the current direction of this century/period/era . —  Again, I have changed the sentence the way I understood it. Why do you call the period ‘incredible’? Try to substantiate and explain your ideas unless it is clear from context.
  • The introduction/availability of computers all around the world made an overwhelming impact on the lifestyles of many   —  the first part of the sentence talks about how computers became easier to get and the changes that followed it. Another collocation: to make an impact ; impact normally takes the ‘on’ preposition. See the  article on prepositions for the general rules to avoid making mistakes in the most basic cases.
  • However, mankind also managed to create great threats to its existence —  wrong or misspelled word.
  • Nuclear bombs and climate change, although seemingly different both share in common the same danger we are faced (with)/we face . — there is no need for they as the subject(s) of the sentence are present
  • In addition, recent economic/financial crisis ensued in drastic drawbacks at a global scale, hence raising unemployment, crime and inequality —   Although economical crisis can be used, the former are much more common.
  • Therefore, far more harm was caused than creating possible solutions leading to a better world — Therefore  and  thus  are very close in meaning, using two together is redundant.
  • Last but not the least, my level of confidence in human’s potential still remains high — a level can be high or low, I would avoid using ‘positive’ with it. Note the use of preposition with ‘confidence’.
  • Lastly, I regard raising awareness about individual rights as a mean to reduce the gender inequality index — It is better to make it more personal — you regard something, not your preference.
  • Considering the aforementioned the future seems blurry for our behaviour can never be precisely predicted — another redundancy. Avoid unnecessary word repetition whenever possible.

The key points of this essay are sufficiently developed. There is still a considerable amount of inaccuracies in terms of vocabulary and grammar which sometimes make it difficult to understand the sentence.

I would also recommend making introduction and conclusion paragraphs slightly bigger, at least three sentences each.

Have fun writing and stay hungry for knowledge !

I have been writing consistently at least 2 essays a week for the past 3 and a half years. Much as I enjoy writing, I love showing my work to the world. And I don’t just write for the sake of Writing. I, instead, write strictly TIMED essays you will most likely expect in the IELTS. Bare in mind that the TIMER is your true friend, and this makes time abundance your foe. Always time yourself 1 hour for a FULL test or 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2. Remember to tackle the question(s) without any pre-reading since this element of surprise of having a random question thrown right into your face is what IELTS Writing is all about. These under-exam-condition essays, no matter how shitty they turn out to be, are indicative of your TRUE level of English, of what you could reasonably do in a real test, and also a foundation on which you can build up and keep refining your skills. And finally, you can take advice from me as someone who has, countless times, pulled off an 8.0 in Writing. Have fun reading and stay hungry for knowledge. Ngoc.

People in the 21st century

' src=

People living in the 21 st century have a better life quality than people who lived in previous times.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The issue of whether individuals living in the 21st century have a better quality of life compared to those in the past is a subject of ongoing debate. From my perspective, people today have a superior standard of living due to advancements in healthcare, safety, and productivity, notwithstanding minor drawbacks of technology.

Initially, people living in the 21st century benefit from improved healthcare and safety measures. Unlike in the past, where individuals had a high probability of dying from wars and diseases due to political instability and limited medical advancements, people today enjoy a more tranquil world and a safer environment. This is, firstly, thanks to modern medicine, which includes vaccines and antibiotics, and has significantly reduced the spread of diseases. Moreover, numerous longitudinal studies have proven that crime rates have also decreased, which affirms that people today are safer than ever before.

Additionally, people living in the 21st century benefit from unparalleled economic productivity made possible by technology. In the past, the majority of people worked in farming, and they had to rely on manual labor to earn a living. However, technology has made it possible for individuals to work remotely, attend meetings through conferencing websites, and communicate with loved ones through messaging apps. Furthermore, the internet has opened up vast opportunities for individuals to learn and expand their knowledge, leading to higher earnings and more modern conveniences such as self-driving cars, which contribute to an enhanced standard of living.

While critics argue that technology has brought distractions, this issue pales in comparison to the advantages that technology has brought about. People can mitigate these drawbacks by practicing mindfulness and reducing their reliance on devices.

In conclusion, people living in the 21st century have a better standard of living compared to any other period in history. They benefit from improved healthcare and safety measures and unparalleled economic productivity, all thanks to technological advancements. While it is crucial to consider the impact of technology, the benefits it has brought about significantly contribute to improving people’s quality of life.

“Moreover, numerous longitudinal studies have proven that crime rates have also decreased, which affirms that people today are safer than ever before”

The non-restrictive clause “which affirms that people today are safer than ever before” is separated by commas from the main clause “numerous longitudinal studies have proven that crime rates have also decreased.” This structure adds additional information to the sentence without changing the main point, making it clearer and more precise. It is a valuable grammar structure for IELTS learners to understand and use in their writing.

IELTS Essay 62 Volume 8 Part 1: Many people are optimistic of the 21st century and see it as an opportunity to make positive changes to the world.

  • Post author By CITY IELTS
  • Post date 13th December 2019

Many people are optimistic of the 21st century and see it as an opportunity to make positive changes to the world. To what extent do you share their optimism? What changes would you like to see in the new century?

Change is but natural. Everything undergoes a sea of changes over a period. Many changes are expected in the 21st century. I am an optimistic person and I believe there will be many beneficial changes which I would like to see in the 21st century.

To begin with many positive changes are expected in the medical field. Our researchers are working day and night to find treatment of various types of cancers and other fatal diseases such as AIDS. Because of advanced diagnostic techniques like MRI and nuclear scan, many diseases can be detected so early that treatment is now possible. Advances are also going on for cell transplant instead of organ transplant. If this becomes true, transplant surgeries will become a thing of the past.

Furthermore, terrorism and wars will be there only in history books. The whole planet Earth has already shrunk into a global village. National boundaries will disappear completely. We will also have better alternatives to energy sources. Global warming will be dealt with effectively and everyone will have the basic amenities of life.

Finally, illiteracy and poverty will be wiped out. Everyone would be educated and contented and therefore there would be peace, harmony and happiness all around. Holidays in space might be common. Change is imminent in every sphere of human life. What is certain is that those who accept changes, instead of those resisting them, will be more successful.

To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that all this might sound too optimistic, but I would surely wish to see all these in the 21st century.

Sample essay

Global warming has led to the melting of the glaciers and unusual weather conditions across the world and today it is one of the biggest problems faced by humanity.

The foremost problems caused by global warming are flooding of many coastal areas and contamination of groundwater. Rise in temperature has caused glaciers to melt. This causes sea levels to rise all over the world and consequently coastal cities are now under the threat of getting submerged. If this trend continues, before long, some of the most prosperous and populous coastal cities of the world will soon be under water. The rising temperatures have also affected weather patterns. While hurricanes and floods are becoming more common in some parts of the world, massive fires are raging in other parts causing widespread damage to both humans and wildlife.

Global warming is caused by an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. One of the main causes of the emission of these gases is the burning of fossil fuels. By switching to cleaner fuels to solar, wind or nuclear, we can reduce our consumption of fossil fuels to a great extent. While this measure is unlikely to completely reverse the damage, it will be possible to prevent the planet from heating up any further. Limiting our consumption of resources and adopting a simpler life are other possible measures.

In conclusion, global warming is a massive risk because it is causing the landscapes to shrink and coastal areas to become submerged due to rising sea levels. Limiting the amount of green house gases in the atmosphere is the most effective way to prevent the planet from heating up any further.

Support ideas with relevant, specific examples

Examples make your writing easier to understand by illustrating points more effectively.

Examples, if used properly, not only help you get higher marks for ‘Task Response’ but also for ‘Coherence’.

When giving examples it is best to put them after your main idea or topic sentence. They can be used in the middle of supporting sentences or they can be used to start a new sentence. There is no rule for where exactly to give examples in essays, logically they would come after your main idea/topic sentence or just after a supporting sentence.

Linking words for giving examples:

  • for example
  • for instance
  • to illustrate this
  • to give a clear example
  • to illustrate
  • take, for example
