One of the most memorable educational experiences for many students is completing a capstone design project.

Capstone design projects are a culmination of learning, enabling seniors to apply the knowledge and hands-on technical skills they’ve gained through coursework and lab sessions. Working in teams with classmates, and guided by faculty advisers and industry partners, students undertake real-world engineering design projects, for which they produce a final deliverable.

Course offerings

To meet students’ various interests, capstone design courses are offered in a variety of subject areas and topics. In addition to traditional capstone design courses, where students in a larger class work in small groups on variations of the same project, industry capstone projects typically feature a small group of students collaborating on one unique project. Both types of capstone projects entail working closely with faculty and industry mentors. Some examples of capstone projects are provided below, organized by subject area:

Structural-Geotechnical capstones

Cee 442: design of structural & foundation systems in a building.

Student teams are given architectural drawings for a new More Hall and work within the constraints imposed by the architectural design to develop different structural and foundation systems. The design process includes determining design loads, schematic design of gravity and lateral load carrying structural systems and foundation elements. Learn more

Boeing capstone: Students design a fluid transport bracket (industry capstone, 2020)

In collaboration with Boeing, a team of students worked to design, fabricate and test a fluid transport backet capable of supporting a significant structural load while adhering to specific space constraints.

City of Fife capstone: Students design an evacuation structure (industry capstone, 2022)

Students collaborated with the City of Fife to redesign an existing municipal building as a vertical evacuation structure to provide life safety in the event of a tsunami or lahar. Students learned to characterize the various hazards at potential sites, work with city officials on building layout, and design the structural system to withstand both day-to-day operational loads and extreme loading events.

Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering capstones

Cee 444: capstone design project.

Students work on a design project, which often involves highway runoff control, low-impact development, storm water detention, fish passage design and water sustainability challenges. Clients are often state, city, or private entities.

WSDOT capstone: Students design a rover to inspect culverts (industry capstone, 2021)

In collaboration with the Washington Department of Transportation, students designed a rover, called the HydroCUB, that can enter sewer pipes, culverts or other tight spaces for inspection purposes.

Environmental Engineering capstone

Cee 445: capstone design project.

A recent project that students worked on addressed the release of arsenic at a major municipal landfill site collocated with a renewable gas refinery. Student teams worked with the King County Solid Waste Division to develop a reverse osmosis system suitable for treatment.

Construction, Energy and Sustainable Infrastructure, and Transportation capstones

Cee 441: bridge engineering.

Students develop construction engineering submittals for a precast concrete girder bridge located along I-90 in the Snoqualmie Pass vicinity. Teams submit work packages that include site preparation and earthwork, drilled shaft construction, bridge deck formwork and more.

CEE 441: Highway construction

Student teams answer a Washington State Department of Transportation request for proposal for a major I-5 design-build project. Project deliverables detail construction methods, lane closures, traffic impacts and a public information campaign.

CEE 441: Solar power (2021)

Students learn about the fundamentals of electric power delivery for detached single-family homes while designing a rooftop solar panel installation or ground mounted array. As part of the project, students outline capacity requirements, environmental impacts and project layout.

CEE 441: Electric vehicles (2022)

Students worked with the City of Mount Vernon to design Washington state’s largest electric vehicle charging facility, to be installed at the city’s new library and community center.

Grand Challenges Impact Lab

A hands-on learning course where students use design thinking to create, prototype and test solutions to problems facing Seattle and Washington State. The topics for spring 2022 included homelessness, environmental sustainability and HIV/AIDS.

The GCIL India Study Abroad Program plans to resume in winter 2023. Students spend an academic quarter in India addressing real-world problems and increasing their cultural awareness.

Our goal is to seamlessly facilitate the student’s transition from Oregon State University to the engineering profession. All undergraduates in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science complete a three-term course sequence (October-May) to expose students to the challenges of engineering design and project management. This career preparation experience includes open-ended design, project management, quality project artifacts (schematics, code, etc.) and documentation, and production of a final prototype in small team environments.

These projects culminate in the high-energy Engineering Expo in May where students present their Capstone Senior Project posters and demonstrate their prototypes. The annual event routinely attracts thousands of people, including industry representatives.

What about online students?

In addition to the bachelor's degree programs mentioned above, Oregon State University also offers a postbaccalaureate degree in computer science. This program's capstone project lasts for one-term instead of three.

Online students are also now able to enroll for the first time in the bachelor's degree  program, including a three-term capstone sequence.

We need you!

Common questions, how big of a project can be done (project scope).

Project scope is typically what you would assign one summer intern. Projects must be non-critical path. Ideally, projects represent a complete system or product that integrates analysis, simulation, and design as appropriate. Keep in mind, this is the first exposure many of the students will have had to this type of project environment. If you are unsure if your project idea is a good fit, we encourage you to contact us and schedule a call. If you prefer, just upload the project .

Can my project include students from more than one major (electrical, computer science, etc.)?

This can be done, but requires extra planning. Multidisciplinary projects provide great experiences for students. Upload your project idea as soon as possible.

Tell me more about the project selection process. What can I do to help ensure my project is picked by students?

When uploading project ideas , keep in mind the students "bid" on the projects (with the faculty keeping teams appropriately balanced). So do not underestimate the "coolness" of your project proposal. Your enthusiasm can be infectious!

Students can see your projects ahead of time and "apply" to your project. You can review these applications (at your discretion) and indicate your preferences to the course instructors.

When do I need to submit my project by?

What does a sponsorship entail?

For those organizations who are able, consider a sponsored Capstone Senior Project. Companies with more than 500 employees are asked to consider a $2K sponsorship contribution. For businesses with less than 500 employees, consider a $500 contribution.

Organizations who sponsor two Capstone Senior Projects will want to consider INSPiRE Industrial Affiliates membership. INSPiRE membership includes two or more sponsored Capstone Senior Projects.

Each capstone project has at least one mentor. These mentors come from a wide array of backgrounds — including non-technical fields. Our program has had mentors from industry, national labs, non-profit and community organizations — anyone can be a mentor. The only requirement is that you care about your project, and your student team, and are willing to meet with the students for at least one hour per week.

Mechanical Engineering Capstone

The Capstone Sequence is the primary culminating project of the mechanical engineering curriculum. Students carry out a formal design experience that takes you from design requirements to idea/design generation and on through prototyping and testing. The sequence is intended to provide experience in the design process and bring together and reinforce skills obtained in the analysis, modeling and measurement of engineering systems. Students also continue to refine communication and teamwork skills and be introduced to concepts in project management that will be utilized to successfully complete the capstone projects. The courses also touch on other important aspects of real-world engineering practice.

Students must complete the following prerequisites prior to beginning any capstone sequence: MECHENG 3360, MECHENG 3671, and MECHENG 3870. Students are also required to enroll in the co-requisite MECHENG 4510 in the same term as capstone. These prerequisites will be  strictly enforced  and exceptions will not be made. All students are also required to complete MECHENG 4870 (Multidisciplinary Mechanical Engineering Laboratory) regardless of the capstone option chosen.

General Capstone Presentation  (Prof. Marzette)

In the general capstone, students are able to participate in a diversity of projects including community and industry projects, instructor-suggested projects, and student conceived projects. Projects options may touch upon any fundamental area of mechanical engineering, and while some may be purely mechanical, others may involve mechatronics or other interdisciplinary work, topically speaking.

There are opportunities to partner with subject-matter experts external to the department who are interested in supporting student projects. Recent projects include an automated lawnmower, a robotic fish, a cookie extruder, a drone constraint device, and a mechanical regeneratively brake bike. 

Students can begin the General Capstone Sequence in the Autumn or Spring semesters. 

Student Design Competition Presentation

Students work on design projects arising from various student team competitions in engineering. The emphasis will be on automotive projects similar to Baja SAE, EcoCAR2, Buckeye Electric Motorcycle and Buckeye Bullet, among others. Note that these projects are tightly formulated to aid student teams in the design and manufacturing of specific components or systems for the vehicles. Some examples include advanced braking systems, high-performance composite structures and the creation of real-time vehicle telemetry. Student teams also document their designs so a record can be created for the various vehicle systems. Permission from the instructor is required to be enrolled in this capstone sequence.

Students can only begin the Student Design Competition Capstone Sequence in the Autumn semester. 

Product Design Presentation

Students will work in teams of three to four students for the entire two–semester sequence, where students are responsible for taking a product idea from the initial conceptualization stage to a functional prototype. The emphasis of this course is on product design, as compared to engineering design, and include lectures on the background and theory of user-centered product development, product architecture, and manufacturing. Students will be expected to complete extensive fieldwork and design research before beginning the project. Additionally, students will build several prototypes over the course of this two–semester sequence. Recent projects include a hose management system for firefighters, an enrichment device for Asian Elephants at the Cincinnati Zoo, and a rainwater collection system for urban farms. 

Permission from the instructor is required to be enrolled in this capstone sequence.  MECHENG 5682.01 is a pre- or co-requisite for the first semester of this capstone.

Assistive Devices capstone is currently merged with the Biomedical Engineering capstone sequence. If you are interested in this option, please reach out to the MAE Advising office for more information.

Students will create assistive devices for people with disabilities. These devices will aid in the quality of life for many types of disabilities. These projects emphasize working with the customer and understanding the specific needs and wants of a variety of patients. Project teams of three to five students will be presented with an unmet need for an assistive device or technology, and will work through the entire product design process over the two-course sequence. This project will also be completed in collaboration with senior capstone students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Project teams will have faculty mentors from both the College of Engineering and the College of Medicine.  The project will culminate with the creation of working prototypes that will be tested and used in a clinical setting.

Students can only begin the Assistive Devices Capstone Sequence in the Autumn semester. 

Multidisciplinary Design Presentation

This capstone sequence is designed to prepare students with the engineering and professional skills and techniques needed to complete a real-world project using a design process. Students will learn a multidisciplinary design process, which includes defining the problem; conceptualizing solutions; designing a solution; building or modeling a prototype; and creating and implementing a validation plan.  Students will demonstrate technical communication skills and professional practices in a multidisciplinary environment. Students will also learn project management and teamwork skills.

Teams of students (typically four to six students) from various engineering programs (i.e. CBE, CSE, ECE, Engineering Physics, FABE, ISE, etc.) and other disciplines (i.e. Business, Chemistry, Finance, Industrial Design, Psychology, etc.) work on these real-world projects, which represent those that might be encountered upon graduation and entering a professional working environment. The project topics range from product and process improvement to new product development, humanitarian and socially innovative product design. A faculty or staff advisor is assigned to each team and each sponsor supplies a liaison for the entire length of the project. Capstone Senior Design (Capstone) is the final required course for the Bachelor’s degree; it provides the opportunity for students to integrate their curricular and experiential journeys into a multi-semester team project with a real-world outcome.

The Capstone experience applies the engineering sciences and other knowledge domains to the design of a system, component, product, process, and/or set of research inquiries. The Capstone projects reflect current, practical, and relevant industrial and mechanical engineering design projects or may involve a combination of both disciplines. Students bid for or develop their team’s particular design project with the approval of appropriate faculty.  In the project assignment process, design teams are self-formed, or configured of students with similar interest areas. Each project includes the use of open-ended problems, development and application of research and design methodologies, formulation of design problem statements and specifications, generation and consideration of alternative solutions, along with safety, usability and feasibility considerations, and detailed system descriptions. It also includes realistic constraints such as economic factors, sustainability, along with global and social impact, to name a few.  Throughout the Capstone experience, students are also challenged to think and act as a ‘team’ and to consider how notions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging affect their decisions, actions, and results.

Capstone projects are often sponsored by outside clients, including early-stage ventures arising from NU’s Entrepreneurial Ecosystem.  Sometimes, ambitious student-proposed technical ideas can (and have) become startup ventures themselves.

Sponsor a Project

The breadth of engineering challenges, both ME and IE, reflect the diversity of the project sponsors. Our sponsors, both corporate and non-profits, range from the aerospace industry to biomedical and regional hospitals. Department faculty sponsor projects for related to their research interests and for custom equipment for their research labs and, increasingly, students enter the program bringing their own sophisticated projects.

In many respects, our project sponsors are the life blood of the program. They bring current real world problems to the students and expect real solutions. Sponsors want to know the patent searches will be done and that intellectual property rights have been considered and protected.

The project sponsors must provide a contact person and are expected to provide timely feedback and interactions. The project should include a prototype deliverable or implemented solution. A “not for work” grant to be negotiated and expensive required items for the prototype are requested from the sponsor. Northeastern will provide computer simulation and basic machining processes. It is usually for the corporate sponsor and Capstone Design Coordinator to discuss and negotiate the details of this arrangement. Protection of the sponsor’s intellectual property is a major concern throughout this process.

At the beginning of the two semester sequence, the students self-assemble into groups and, after reviewing project descriptions, indicate their preferences. The preferences are used to assign the projects. Once projects are assigned, the students meet with their faculty advisor weekly and with representatives of the sponsor, through onsite visits, Skype or teleconferences, on a basis determined by the sponsor. The evaluation and reporting processes are tightly structured. The program culminates with a day long series of public presentations judged by a panel of our alumni.

2021 Capstone Projects

To wrap up their undergraduate experience at CU Boulder, computer science students participate in a year-long senior capstone project that gives them a chance to put their skills into practice on real-world projects, as well as to make important professional connections.  Software design projects are sponsored  by companies, academic units and individuals who volunteer their time to work closely with students throughout the year. 

This year, 27 teams completed their software design projects despite the challenges of distance and pandemic. Thank you to all of the students and project sponsors who worked through these uncertain times --  congratulations on a job well done!

A capstone project, otherwise known as a culminating project or a senior thesis, is a long-term, substantial assignment that you undertake in your final year of high school. If you are passionate about a particular subject a capstone project is the perfect way to demonstrate that passion to colleges, future employers, and your local community. 

Traditionally, a “capstone” is the final piece of brickwork or stone laid atop a building to complete it. It is the culminating step in a considerable process. For students, a capstone project is similar. It is a crowning achievement to tie together what you have learned in high school . Ideally, your capstone should relate to your academic accomplishments and demonstrate to colleges your mastery of the subject.

Why are capstone projects important for high school students?

Capstone projects provide numerous benefits to students. Most obviously, they provide dedicated students with the opportunity to demonstrate their academic rigor and mastery of certain subjects. This is extremely useful in the context of college applications. However, there are several other important benefits that you can derive from this experience. 

  • You may find that the simple process of designing your own project and carrying it to completion will engender self-belief and the confidence that you can undertake even greater projects. 
  • A capstone project pushes you to hone your skills in public speaking, critical thinking, teamwork and leadership, research and collaboration, planning and organization, and many more. 
  • You may be unsure of exactly what you want to focus on in college and beyond. 
  • A capstone project gives you the chance to experiment with something that has always captured your academic attention. 
  • If you are passionate about a hobby or discipline, a capstone project allows you to test whether you want to pursue this passion at a higher level. 
  • This project will help solidify your goals and the focus of your academic future.
  • One of the most significant aspects of a capstone project is the relationship that develops between mentor and student. 
  • Many projects will require supervision or consultation with experts – often your teachers or members of your community. These relationships can provide innumerable benefits both in the long and short term. Tapping into the network of people around you, and showing respect and interest in their expertise will take you a long way. Most professionals love nothing more than discussing their passions with excited young people. 
  • It never hurts to get more experts advocating for you and more community figures in your corner!
  • Less seriously, senior year can often be a wasted year. You might find that – having already completed your standardized tests, applied to college, and completed most of your important courses – you no longer are engaged with school or required to complete much work.   • Not least of which is the danger of losing academic momentum and developing poor habits. By undertaking a capstone project throughout senior year, you will be further engaged with schooling and less likely to suffer from the shock of returning to normalcy in freshman fall at college. 

How can a capstone project help you for college admissions?

College admissions is an extremely competitive and increasingly demanding process. As college applications become more and more comprehensive, students and parents have begun to see capstone projects as a way to gain an advantage. Many students are of the mistaken belief that colleges are primarily looking for well-rounded students.

Most high schoolers who are serious about college are encouraged to pursue interests even outside of their passions – you might have been told “you should play a sport, and an instrument, and be in the debate club, and volunteer locally, and travel!”

Apart from being stressful, and unattainable for the majority of young people, this is generally poor advice. Instead, it is better to have a handful of interests or passions that you can demonstrate a prolonged period of dedication to. This is where a capstone project fits in. 

Briefly imagine you are an aspiring scientist, determined to study biology at university. When you are applying to college you want to demonstrate that this passion is a deep one, and that it is a priority for you.

In that context, it makes much more sense to apply your time towards a study of local environmental degradation than towards an unrelated sport, club, or volunteer activity.

Additionally, colleges are becoming increasingly savvy about the affectations of prospective students. Showing a genuine, long-term interest in a particular academic discipline has reemerged as one of the surest ways to gain attention from the leading colleges.

You may also find that your capstone experience was so noteworthy or illuminating that you are inspired to write your personal statements or supplemental essays about it. At the very least, you will find that your capstone project helps tie together your academic pursuits and provides you with a useful narrative structure for college applications and interviews. 

How to brainstorm a capstone project

When sitting down to brainstorm a capstone project, it is important to remember that this is a personal process. It can be useful to study projects done by former students, to see what worked and what did not, and to encourage ideas of your own. But, ultimately, you want your capstone project to reflect your unique skills and interests.

Think about whatever you excel in academically. Or, perhaps, what you have always been passionate about but have long thought didn’t relate particularly to academics. Most importantly, consider what it is you want to focus your higher education and career on, and let that guide your decision.

There are limitless options for capstone projects. The only things to avoid are plagiarism and irrelevancy. Pick something that inspires you and that will provide you with a useful foundation to make the next step. If all else fails, ask people around you!

They may have a better idea of your strengths and weaknesses than you do. A simple conversation with a parent, friend, tutor, or teacher may lead you on a journey you never considered. 

How to find a capstone project

Trying to find an original capstone project can be challenging. In recent years, undertaking a capstone has become quite common with American students. As such, you might find it tricky to come up with an idea that doesn’t seem overdone or, worse, like plagiarism.

However, there is only one you! The composite parts of your interests may be shared by many, but the sum of your interests is unique to you. This means that sometimes you might find your best idea is an interdisciplinary one. 

Let us pretend you are a student who is interested in the environment, American history, and mapmaking. Now, if you were to try to come up with a capstone idea, you might begin by considering a study on the impact of environmental runoff in your local river or an investigation into the roots of different people living in your community.

You might then go online and see that such projects seem unoriginal or trite. Desperate and discouraged you might force yourself into one of these narrow approaches.

However, a better option would be to consider how to weave your many interests into one coherent capstone. For you, this could involve researching the construction and maintenance of wooded paths in your local forest or reservation going back to the precolonial era.

You might interview community leaders, study historical maps and texts, practice cartography, and ultimately enrich yourself in several areas at once. Needless to say, you would also produce a more authentic and unique capstone project. 

Consider: You are multifaceted, and the interactions of those facets are what makes you unique!

How long should a capstone project last?

Broadly speaking, a capstone project is intended to last for the bulk of your senior year. The majority of capstone projects are proposed in the summer between junior and senior year, or early in the fall, and then completed in the spring or summer of senior year.

However, there is no absolute rule here and indeed many schools encourage students to begin working on their capstone projects as early as freshman year. 

While there is no limit to how long you can work on your capstone project, there is a limit on how little. A capstone project by definition should be long-term and extensive. At a minimum, we are talking about several months.

The purpose is to demonstrate to colleges, your community, and yourself that you can undertake a project over a long period of time. This involves many skills that colleges prize, such as time management and planning, prioritization of tasks, determination, and diligence. 

Remember that a good capstone project cannot be rushed. You will likely want to be working on it for at least the bulk of your senior year.

How to design your own capstone project in simple steps.

  • Proposal – Your big idea! The details of the proposal you will be expected to put forward will be different from school to school, but there are some general guidelines. A proposal should be initiated by the student and put forward to a professor, teacher, or community leader. This proposal should contain an observation and a hypothesis; review of existing literature; a planned study or experiment; and possible problems with the proposal. If the proposal is approved by an expert, you are ready to proceed to the next steps. 
  • Anchor Experience – The main event! This is where you actually study something, observe, or conduct research. This may involve any number of things depending on your own project. This experience should usually involve a mentor and prolonged exposure to the subject at hand. 
  • Portfolio – Evidence and conclusions of your work! Throughout your capstone project you should maintain a portfolio of all related writing, work, and research. Your portfolio should include any experiments run, observations recorded, or conclusions reached. It is what you will show to colleges to prove your work and what you will be expected to present at the end of your project. 
  • Presentation – Defend your thesis or show it off! The final step of most capstone projects involves presenting your work to one or more experts in the field. Oftentimes, this just involves presenting your portfolio to the same teacher who approved your proposal and who has been acting as your mentor throughout. Sometimes, however, it may involve making a presentation before a large group of people and defending your thesis from questions and comments. The exact nature of your presentation will naturally differ depending on your choice of project. 

How to pick the best capstone project

Your capstone project should relate to your intended major . If you plan to study chemistry, don’t do a capstone project on romance literature. If you plan to study American history, don’t do a capstone project on marketing in your community.

If you have not yet decided what to major in or what you want to focus your college education on, then it makes sense to use your capstone project to experiment with something – try on the hat and see how it fits. 

Additionally, you want your capstone project to be something that inspires and motivates you. It is no good picking something that sounds brilliant and earthshaking in theory, but that will in practice bore or frustrate you. That is the surest way to produce poor quality work.

You should assess your own habits and motivations and come up with the best project that fits you. Colleges can usually tell a genuine interest from a manufactured one. Therefore, you should pick something which will allow you to show them your best work in a subject you are deeply immersed in. This will always produce the best results. 

While I have said previously that a capstone project can be a good opportunity to experiment with a possible interest, it is important to briefly elaborate on that to provide better context.

It is an opportunity to expand on a preexisting interest that you are not sure if you want to dedicate your education or career to. It is not an opportunity to manufacture a completely new interest. Remember, a capstone is meant to be the finishing touch on your entire schooling. It should always relate to and expand upon your previous work. 

It is therefore best to pick a capstone project that you function as the final step on a journey you have already been undertaking. If all else fails, consider your interests and passions and go from there. Even if it seems only tangentially related to academia, that would be better than choosing an academically sound project that doesn’t inspire you.
