Kaliningrad’s Nazi past – in the shadow of German history

Although the biggest massacre of Jews ever perpetrated on German territory took place in Palmnicken, today Jantarni, 50 kilometers away from Kaliningrad, hardly anyone seems to know about it.

That same night, 5000 German civilians tried to flee the Russian invasion (or liberation, depending on how you see it) of Königsberg on the steamboat Wilhelm Gunstoff, which tragically ended in a huge loss of life in the icy waters of the Baltic Sea after the steamer was shot and sunk by a Soviet submarine. The pilot of the submarine, Alexander Iwanowitsch Marinesko, was granted the status of “Hero of the Soviet Union” and still has a statue to his effigy in Kaliningrad.

But another tragedy occurred at the same time, which took the lives of more than 5000, mainly Polish, Ukrainian and Hungarian Jewish women.

They were all internees at the KZ (concentration camp) Stutthof near Danzig (Gdansk) and at the surrounding smaller camps of Eastern Prussia. These women, declared “capable of working” and aged between 18 and 40, had been brought there from Auschwitz to “help” the region “resist” the advancing Red Army.

As the Red Army started its offensive, the KZ Stutthof and the smaller camps of the surroundings were closed, and all their internees brought to a factory in Königsberg. Nobody knows what happened to the majority of the 13000 prisoners. What is known is that 5000 of them were made to leave the factory on the 26 th of January, without warm clothing or food, on a fifty kilometer-long death march to Palmnicken, today Jantarni.

Only 3000 of them survived the walk. On the way, any sign of weakness or attempt to eat snow to overcome thirst and hunger was punished with death. Piles of corpses were accumulated on the street in broad daylight, under the eyes of hundreds of witnesses.  Some of them have reported of “between 300 and 400 bodies over a distance of 4 kilometers”. Others of carriages trying to clear the streets “overflowed with frozen bodies”.

The ones who survived the march were brought to the amber factory to spend the night. As the director of the factory, Hans Feyerabend, came in the following morning, he took the women under his protection, giving them food, and guaranteeing them safety “as long as he lived”. To overcome this unexpected lack of cooperation, the SS made a plot against Feyerabend, which led to a suspicious suicide .

At the same time, the mayor of the city organized a hunt for the women who had managed to escape the death march. The SS shot the 40 to 50 women who had been rounded up and the Hitlerjugend finished off the survivors of the shooting.

On the night of the 31 st of January, the women were taken from the amber factory to the beach, allegedly to bring them by boat to a “safe place”. The SS then chased the internees into the icy waters and shot almost all of them to death, leaving the survivors to drown or to freeze.

Some of them did escape, and were saved by inhabitants of the village, or found a safe haven in the local hospital. Fifteen of them testified to the Russians as they overtook Palmnicken. The Soviets then tried to find those responsible, but most of them had already fled, apart from the jungsters of the Hitlerjugend. The Russian soldiers, however, organized a sort of collective punishment. 200 women from Palmnicken had to dig up 200 corpses out of a mass grave with their bare hands and to lay them on the ground. They then had to explain what had happened to those men and women and why. The bodies were then buried again in another mass grave and the Russians held a ceremony, underlining the importance of remembering the murdered innocents.

Ten years later, the massacre was already forgotten. When some Soviet diggers looking for amber in the 60’s exhumed human remnants, the local authorities assumed they belonged to Soviet prisoners of war, killed by the Nazis. A memorial was erected to them, in the same fashion as one to some pilots who crashed their plane on the beach a few years later.

During the same period in Germany, some 108 witnesses were auditioned. However, before it could come to a trial, the main accused died and the procedure was cancelled. In Israel too, some research was conducted on the basis of the reports of the Red Army from 1945 and some interviews with survivors were carried out. But none of this information was ever made public.

In 1994, Martin Bergau, a witness, published a book about the massacre and brought the facts to the public for the first time. That same year, he came back to the village of his childhood and informed the mayor of what had happened. He was then given authorization to build a memorial and to take care of the restoration of the graves.

In 2011, a statue designed by the Gdansk-based artist and survivor Frank Meislor was erected in remembrance of the victims. But somehow, the facts have still not made it into the collective memory of World War II, alongside the tragedies of Babi Yar or Auschwitz-Birkenau. Maybe because for a very long time, the archive of the land party of East Prussia (Landmannschaft Ostpreussen) refused to file the testimonies of the witnesses or to publish articles in their newspaper about what had happened. For them until not long ago apparently, the only tragedy of January 1945 was the absurd sinking of the Wilhelm Gunstoff and its German victims.

This is fascinating. I have often sneaked around border zones myself but did not realise there was a community of enthusiasts. I'll read more with relish- thanks. I currently live in the city closest to the Russian/Chinese/Mongolian border but it's a good few hundred km away....
