Undergraduate Research Grants

To support the research or creative endeavor of our undergraduate students, Butler University has established the following grants to help offset the cost of conducting research/creative endeavor and traveling to a conference to share the outcomes of student research/creative endeavor with others. Any full-time Butler University student who has not yet earned a baccalaureate or PharmD degree is eligible to apply for Travel-to-Present grants and Honors Thesis grants.

All grant applications are reviewed by the Program for Undergraduate Research Committee. The committee is comprised of faculty members representing all six of Butler’s colleges. Students should direct questions about these grants to either their faculty advisor or to the Faculty Director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, Anne Wilson .

Forms and guidelines are available in electronic format below. All applications must be typed –any non-typed applications will be returned.  After all signatures have been received, applications must be scanned and emailed as one PDF document to the Faculty Director (Christopher Stobart) . Applications containing multiple attachments will be returned.

undergraduate thesis grant

This grant is designed to help defray the cost of travel to a conference to present the results of original research/creative endeavor. The Committee prioritizes competitively selected oral presentations over other presentations. If the applicant’s presentation was not competitively selected, then the faculty sponsor is required to submit a letter of support explaining why a non-refereed and/or poster presentation is a worthwhile, professional endeavor for the student.

If a department has multiple students attending the same conference, the Committee will only review a maximum of  five  proposals, with the maximum award being $1500.00 per conference. If more than five presentations are accepted to a conference, the sponsoring department must select the top five applications to forward to the committee.

Students are responsible for obtaining receipts for all expenses pertaining to reimbursement. The expenditure of funds requires adherence to Butler University’s  Business Office Policies  and fiscal regulations, whose regulations adhere to IRS regulations.

Students are eligible to receive only one Travel-to-Present grant during their tenure at Butler.

The application should be submitted on the first of the month, at least one month prior to planned travel.

Travel-to-Present Grant Application

As you’re completing the Travel to Present Application, please be sure to avoid making the following mistakes which will result in your application being returned:

  • Application not submitted as one (1) pdf document
  • Missing signatures
  • Handwritten applications
  • No entries related to expenses
  • No supporting documentation to verify expenses
  • No proof of conference acceptance
  • Students who are attending the same conference submit the same rationale for attending the conference (each applicant should highlight their own reasons for wanting to attend the conference)

Funding and Grants

Grant opportunity for undergraduate research programs.

To increase access to research opportunities for undergraduate students, the Office of Academic Affairs awards seed funding up to $10,000 to support faculty in developing and launching undergraduate research experiences at The Ohio State University. As a national leader in undergraduate education at a public research university, the Office of Undergraduate Education’s (OUE) goal is for every Ohio State undergraduate to participate in transformational high-impact learning experiences, such as undergraduate research. Undergraduate research is critical for students who wish to pursue graduate education. OUE aims to recognize and support faculty more fully in their efforts to create these opportunities.

HOW TO APPLY

Ohio State faculty from all campuses are invited to submit seed grant applications for up to $10,000 each.  The deadline for Spring 2024 proposals is Friday, May 3.  Please download  the  application  and use the  online form  to submit your materials.

Proposals selected for funding will create new undergraduate research opportunities that increase access and lower barriers to participation.

Previously Funded Projects

In the first two rounds of applications in spring 2023 and autumn 2023, 26 proposals were funded out of 66 applications. The successful proposals represented seven different colleges (including all three divisions of Arts & Sciences) and three different campuses. While all applications offered exciting research opportunities, successful applications generally emphasized one or more of the following components:

  • A plan to create research opportunities for more than just a few undergraduates;
  • A clear and feasible plan to continue to offer the research opportunity beyond just a semester or two;
  • A design aimed at reducing barriers to participation.

That said, the successful proposals were quite varied. Roughly half focused on creating course-based undergraduate research opportunities. Some of the successful proposals were geared toward entry-level introductions to research, while some were geared toward advanced undergraduates. Some planned to use the seed grant to buy equipment, while others planned to pay for faculty time to develop the opportunity, and/or support undergraduate researchers directly with funding. Some applications included the promise of matching funds from a department or college; most did not, but all were strongly aligned with the goals of their respective department or college.

All the applications were impressive, whether they were funded in the first round. The Office of Undergraduate Education will continue to invite seed-grant applications each fall and spring semester as long as funding remains available.

For any questions related to this seed grant funding program, please contact Eddie Bowles .

Additional Funding Opportunities

Funding for undergraduate students.

There are many scholarships, fellowships, and small grants (listed on our  Funding Opportunities page ) which students can apply for to support their independent research projects. Generally, these types of monetary support are given directly to the student and not to the faculty advisor.

Funding for Mentors

UR&CI can support faculty grant applications with a letter of collaboration. We can strengthen your application by outlining the commitment and resources that Ohio State dedicates to its undergraduate researchers, as well as confirm that our office can help to recruit undergraduate researchers for your project. To request a letter, email  [email protected] . Please visit the  Office of Research  to find more information about funding for labs and faculty.

Grants for costs associated with senior honors thesis research. Late applications are not accepted. There are separate deadlines for the recommendation request and for submission of the application and faculty recommendation, so  be sure you are aware of all deadlines .

Honors thesis grant eligibility

  • Funding is only awarded for honors thesis research (not for culminating experiences or theses that are not in fulfillment of the honors program in your major).
  • Students conducting honors thesis research in the summer before senior year may apply for either an honors thesis grant or a leave term grant depending on which is more appropriate for the individual circumstances.
  • Students are not eligible for these awards once they have completed the requirements and credits for a Dartmouth undergraduate degree (for example, students who have completed a Dartmouth A.B. and are continuing coursework for a Dartmouth B.E. are not eligible for leave term research grants).
  • Enrolled as an undergraduate student during the funded term (R term)
  • Enroll in at least one R term following the funded term
  • If your thesis has not yet been accepted by the grant application deadline, you are still eligible to apply if your faculty thesis advisor confirms that approval is pending.
  • Students apply for funding the term before the one in which they require funding. Funding will not be awarded retroactively or for the term in which the application is submitted.
  • Students who have previously received funding through UGAR must be in good standing in that program in order to be considered for a grant (e.g. submitted all required paperwork and final reports).
  • Senior Fellows and Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows are not eligible for these grants.
  • If you have questions about your eligibility, you must contact UGAR prior to the application deadline.

Be sure to also review the  eligibility guidelines for UGAR programs  before applying for a senior honors thesis grant.

  • Thesis grants are awarded for expenses directly related to the research, and NOT for cost of living (e.g. housing, meal plan, etc.) or an individual stipend or wages.
  • Be sure that your budget is as accurate as possible and that all expenses are justified.
  • Budgets that are excessive or include extraneous expenses will not be considered for funding.
  • This includes your major department or program as well as other  college offices that fund undergraduate research .
  • You may not accept more funding than the total cost of your project (as entered on the UGAR application form).
  • Funding is awarded only for the subsequent term. Students whose honors thesis projects require more than one term of funding must submit applications for each term.
  • Students who apply for additional funding in subsequent terms will not be awarded more than $1500 in total for the senior thesis research. If there is a compelling justification, total awards may be up to $2500.
  • Award money will not be available until 3-4 weeks after the application deadline, so be sure to plan accordingly.
  • Information about payments and processes is on the UGAR stipends webpage .

International Senior Thesis Research Grant

The Buffett Institute’s International Senior Thesis Research Grant offers awards of up to $6,000 for eight weeks of independent research on a senior thesis, covering travel and living expenses in locations outside the contiguous U.S. as well as research with Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities, locally and globally. The opportunity is open to undergraduate students across all fields of study during the summer.

Students who seek support for a shorter period than eight weeks of concentrated research may be considered for a prorated grant. Prorated grants are usually for six or seven weeks of research, as approved by a faculty supervisor.

The application deadline has been extended until March 20, 2024.

  • Eligibility
  • Application Process & Deadlines
  • Information for Faculty Supervisors

To be eligible for this grant, students must meet the following requirements:

  • They must be conducting senior thesis research on an international or global issue outside of the contiguous U.S.
  • They must be an undergraduate student at Northwestern University and not graduating any earlier than the end of the Fall 2024 term.
  • They may not be enrolled in summer classes or completing an internship during the eight-week research period.
  • They must not accept any other research grant that covers the eight-week research period.
  • They must be in good academic standing.

Please be aware that all students who receive funds for research abroad must meet additional requirements set out by Northwestern Buffett’s Office of Global Safety and Security. As non-credit travelers, all student awardees must complete the International Travel Registry and purchase travel medical insurance through GeoBlue. Some research locations may require a Travel Permission Request according to the international travel policy for undergraduate students . These requirements must be met before successful applicants will receive funds, and travel to certain countries may be restricted for health and safety reasons.

If your proposed research involves collecting data from human subjects (including interviews, surveys, etc.), you will need to obtain Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval before you may begin your project.  The (IRB) is a multidisciplinary committee that reviews research involving human subjects to ensure the rights and welfare of human subjects are protected.     All Northwestern researchers, including undergraduates, who are involved in the conduct of human subjects research are also required to complete initial human subjects protection training and to re-certify every three years. This training is separate from the application process to receive IRB approval for your research project. If you have questions, please contact your faculty supervisor.

We highly recommend that applicants also consider applying for the  Summer Undergraduate Research Grant offered by the Office of Undergraduate Research. While students can only receive one research grant during this funding period, applying to both programs increases the chances of securing funding for your research project.

Deadline: March 20, 2024

Students can apply via the online application .  The application requires an endorsement from the student’s faculty supervisor to be considered complete. In the application form, students will provide their faculty member's email address. Once submitted, the faculty member will receive an email notification outlining the next steps. Thus, it is important for students to submit their application well before the deadline and to inform their faculty supervisor in advance that they intend to apply for this grant and include details such as the application deadline and a link to this webpage.

The Office of Undergraduate Research has a robust set of resources to help students understand how to prepare components of a research proposal. If students have questions about the Buffett Institute’s International Senior Thesis Research Grant specifically, please email Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives Samantha Nissen .

The deadline to apply is March 20, 2024 . We aim to notify students of their award decision in early April .

SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION

This application requires a faculty endorsement. Once the student submits the application, you will receive a copy of the application along with a link to a short endorsement form for you to complete. We ask that you submit the endorsement by the application deadline, which is March 20, 2024 .

We ask that t his award be transferred to your department , which will then disburse funds to the student directly in one lump sum at the beginning of summer. If your department is unable to administer this award, we will work with you. If your student is awarded, we will contact you with the next steps then.

If you have questions, please email Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives Samantha Nissen .

Ericson takes Grand Prize at 13th Three-Minute Thesis competition

photo of three women holding plaques at ceremony

Hannah Ericson, a doctoral candidate in Genetics, is the Grand Prize Winner at this year’s University of Georgia Three Minute Thesis (3MT ® ) Competition for her presentation titled “Catalyzing Change: What Helps Department Heads Be Successful?”

A Ph.D. candidate studying biology education in the Genetics department in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, Hannah works with Dr. Tessa Andrews studying teaching evaluations at UGA :

To promote the use of evidence-based teaching practices, teaching evaluation needs to support, recognize, and incentivize their use. Teaching evaluation is inadequate in this regard at many institutions, relying solely on student surveys instead of multiple sources of evidence. Hannah’s research focuses on the changes to teaching evaluation that are occurring at UGA, as well as factors influencing these shifts in different STEM departments. Hannah is passionate about the use of evidence-based teaching practices, to provide the best possible experience for STEM students.  Originally from Illinois, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Iowa. While there, her research centered around using fruit flies as a model to study epilepsy. She also helped in the description of a new species of parasitic wasp.

Congratulations to Ericson and all the participants for their successful [and succinct!] presentations! Very well done these outstanding graduate students.
