Revisiting moondram pirai – a tale of yearning and unconditional love.

Celebrating 42 Years of Moondram Pirai!

7am pirai tamil movie review

Heart-wrenching storyline

“And if love be madness, may I never find sanity again”  stands certainly true for our protagonist, Srinivas, although Lakshmi was the one, who is diagnosed as mentally unstable, Srinivas becomes equally insane by the end of the movie, things one does for love. While the movies of the 80s were certainly patriarchial, where women were expected to do the chores and take care of the man and the household, Srinivas stands apart from your everyday protagonist, he devotionally takes care of his lady love, doesn’t shy away from doing the household chores, goes above and beyond to make sure she is alright and most importantly he is helplessly in love with her. Srinivas is the symbol of unconditional love, she is mentally unwell? I still love her, She can’t understand or reciprocate what I am doing for her? I still love her, she might not love me once she remembers everything? doesn’t matter I still love her. “Viji, Cheenu, Viji” Srinivas runs behind Lakshmi begging her to remember him as her train leaves the station, unlike your typical Tamil cinema climax Lakshmi won’t step out of the train and run to Srinivas, the train leaves, leaving him behind broken, wounded and longing. Moondram Pirai is a tale of yearning and unconditional love of an unfortunate orphan, whose last hope abandoned him.

Direction and Cinematography

The movie was directed by the legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra. Balu Mahendra is known for the way he handles realist subjects with an artistic approach. Balu Mahendra effortlessly marries tragedy with romance in this film, resulting in wonderful box office success and a theatrical run for over a year.  His Cinematography brilliantly complemented and overall enhanced the whole visual storytelling. The director had wonderfully captured the landscape of Ooty, the emotions of the character, and experimented with lights creating a timeless classic as a result the legendary Balu Mahendra said in his own words “Moondram pirai will be the same Moondram pirai even after 50 years”.

Versatile Acting

Moondram Pirai was undeniably both Sri Devi’s and Kamal’s one of the most acclaimed works. The movie bagged Kamal Hassan his first national award. Actress Sridevi perfectly portrayed a mentally unwell character bringing the balance of child-like innocence and child likeantics. Both the actors impeccably cracked what was required of their roles with their subtle nuances and attention to detail. Although it was their eyes that did all the talking, the audience were the ones who couldn’t take their eyes off them.

Mesmerizing Music

The film’s music was composed by Isaignani Ilaiyaraja. Like all his other works, Moondram Pirai’s music leaves you in a dream trance-like state. The film’s music  is responsible for evoking intense emotions, brilliantly augmenting the whole movie-watching experience. The film’s soundtrack “Kanne Kalaimanne” is still loved and listened to to by the Tamil cinema audience.

40 Years of Moondram Pirai: A nostalgic lookback at Kamal Haasan, Sridevi's romantic tragedy directed by Balu Mahendra

Many films may come and go, but only a few enjoy the luxury remaining eternally in the hearts of audiences. This is certainly applicable to Moondram Pirai, the 1982 release, directed and cinematographed by Balu Mahendra that brought the sparkling Kamal Haasan and Sridevi together. The film, marking the production debut of Sathya Jothi films founded by TG Thyagarajan, may have been a romantic tragedy at the end of the day though the sheer innocence and charm with which it was made continues to win many viewers even today.

Everything about the film is a source of instant nostalgia, from Sridevi transforming into a child-at-heart after a serious accident to Kamal singing a lullaby to put her to sleep and later, trying every trick in the book to make her remind of the times they spent. Balu Mahendra's cinematography captures the ambience of Ooty in all its simplicity without being too indulgent and Ilaiyaraaja's music does everything to enhance the aura around the storytelling.

image_item

For those unaware of Moondram Pirai, it's a story of a young man (Cheenu) coming across a vulnerable woman (Viji) at a brothel, who has lost track of her recent past owing to a terrible injury in an accident. The two forge an unlikely bond, going beyond labels like friendship, love and romance, and live life like there's no tomorrow. Just when it looks like nothing can stop them from living in their dreamy paradise, reality hits them brutally. Like the title (the crescent seen on the third day following new moon day) says, theirs was a short-lived yet beautiful relationship.

Playing a character with retrograde amnesia is no joke and it requires the right amount of skill, sensitivity and wit to get the pulse of the part right. At a time when exaggeration was the order of the day, Sridevi displays admirable composure in empathising with Viji and never goes overboard. The way Sridevi childishly calls the pet in her neighbourhood 'Subramani' is the first (and the best) memory of the character, perhaps elevated by the innocence in her performance. Accompanying her is Kamal Haasan is in pristine form, who, with all his mastery, knows when to underplay and when to when to use a scene as his personal showcase.

The film's sore spot is of course its portions with Silk Smitha that hampers the remarkable flow in the storytelling considerably, in the name of commercial liberty. All said and done, though a song like Ponmeni Uruguthey may have brought crowds to theatres four decades ago, it doesn't at all age well in 2022. Yet, Ilaiayaraaja's music is as integral to the film as the performances and Balu Mahendra's craftmanship. Beyond the redoubtable Kanne Kalaimaane, the mood in Yesudas' rendition of Poongaatru Puthithaanathu is something to die for.

Moondram Pirai's producer, TG Thyagarajan, commemorating the 40 years of its release, really meant his words when he said that Ilaiyaraaja's music is the pillar of the film. "The film manages to entertain and also inform. The impact of the songs hasn't diminished even today. The film brought a lot of laurels to our banner (Sathya Jothi Films) and the songs continue to be heard and sung everywhere. I couldn't have asked for a better foundation for my banner than Moondram Pirai," he released a statement earlier in the day.

We conveniently say every second film that releases in theatres is ahead of its times but Moondram Pirai is a work of art that genuinely and richly deserves that tag. Be it in terms of performances, music, technical standards and storytelling, the film haunts us today as much as it did in 1982. Very few retro films are quite 'today' in their spirit, appeal and that's probably why Moondram Pirai continues to remain relevant. Cheenu, Viji and Subramani will always be an emotion for a movie buff.

Moondram Pirai / Sadma

by amy · March 24, 2014

sadma-moondram-pirai-poster

Original Title:  மூன்றாம் பிறை / सदमा English Title:  Crescent / Trauma Release Date:  February 19, 1982 / July 8, 1983 Director:  Balu Mahendra Screenplay by:  Balu Mahendra, Gulzar (Sadma) Cast:  Kamal Hassan, Sridevi, Silk Smitha

I’m going to be a little unorthodox and write a double feature review, because in a rare commercial turn of events, these Indian cult classics are practically the same movie: same story, same cast, same crew. Just slightly little changes. After being quite popular in (some say, film crazy) Tamil Nadu in 1982, Moondram Pirai also nabbed Actor , Actress and Director awards and nominations; the Bollywood film industry took notice and released a re-shot Hindi version of the film with the same cast and crew to less commercial success but still nabbing noms at the Filmfare Awards .

The film begins when a carefree Bhagyalakshmi/Nehalata (Sridevi) gets into a terrible car accident suffering a blunt head trauma that makes her forget many years of her life, rendering her a small child in the body of a young woman. Her parents decide to keep her at a mental hospital at the suggestion of the doctor,  but that takes a turn for the worse  when she is sold to a brothel, where she meets the good-natured Seenu/Somu (Hassan).

One might think that Moondram Pirai / Sadma would turn into the most depressing tale of a young woman at a brothel, or some kind of whack Pretty Woman rip-off, but it’s neither of those. Taken by the childlike qualities (which he mistakes a solely helplessness) of the young woman he knows as Viji/Reshmi, he takes her from the brothel — without knowing that her parents are looking for her — to his home in Ooty [ 1 ] where Viji/Reshmi is welcomed by the people who live with Seenu/Somu.

While you question yourself how a man and a young woman who has regressed to the state of a child could even try to fall in love with each other, I would argue that they don’t, despite some people labeling this a ‘romance.’ Yes, there is a relationship build-up, but it goes beyond the romantic aspect of love- It might start out as a possible romance, a supposed hero complex of wanting to save a girl that begins a friendship and settles for guardianship, that strange bond of parent and child.

There is a moment that seems to support that idea, in which Hassan’s character gives Sridevi’s a sari, which she’s all too embarrassed to receive (aww shucks). However, after a musical sequence in which Sridevi magically cures her amnesia wearing the hell out of that gifted sari, we are (and so is Hassan’s character) presented with reality: Sridevi can’t wear that lovely sari, at least not yet. All the games played, the knowledge imparted, all that taking care of, and all that worrying… it all builds up to that most heartbreaking scene, in which Sridevi returns to being Bhagyalakshmi/Nehalata and stops being that puppy-loving ‘child.’ She leaves us hanging, holding onto that something that might magically make her remember, and you keep waiting and waiting, holding onto that little bit of hope because there is still a little bit of film left.

It’s a terrible feeling, but it’s so good that a film stirs all of that within its last minutes. They’re performances for the ages — Hassan has had plenty of chances to give great performances, but I don’t think Sridevi has ever topped this, even if English Vinglish comes close. And, yes, even compared to some of her most popular roles like in Lamhe , ChaalBaaz , Chandni or Mr. India .

As far as remakes go? The only thing Sadma improves on is that Sridevi’s child wardrobe helps with the contrast in that sari scene and accentuates the childlike qualities of her performance. As a stand-alone film, it’s good, but you gotta question the need to re-shoot the whole thing when Moondram Pirai exists.

You can check Sadma on Shemaroo’s YouTube Channel , but subtitles don’t seem synced.

Bhagyalakshmi, a young woman, has a car accident while returning from a party and is hospitalised with severe head injuries. When she recovers, she is diagnosed with retrograde amnesia and she fails to recognise her own parents. She mentally regresses to the state of a child. While she is undergoing treatment, she is kidnapped and sold to the madam of a brothel. R. Srinivas, also known as Cheenu, comes to Madras to meet his old friend. Together, they visit the brothel for services rendered. The madam sends Bhagyalakshmi, renamed Vijaya, to his room. Cheenu realises that she is mentally still a child and pities her. He learns that she is from a cultured family, and that she was kidnapped and forced into prostitution.

Cheenu returns the next day and, after paying a huge sum to the madam, takes Vijaya out, supposedly on a pleasure trip. He takes her away to Ketti, where he is working as a school teacher. He takes her to his residence, where he protects her and also looks after her like a child. Viji, as she is called by Cheenu, has completely forgotten her past and becomes very close to him. When Viji accidentally spills ink over Cheenu's documents, angering him, their relationship is threatened, but they reconcile. Later, a local woodcutter named Natarajan lusts for Viji and nearly assaults her, but she manages to save herself. When she tells Cheenu about it, he becomes enraged and almost kills Natarajan, but is stopped by his neighbours who were informed of the incident by Viji. Meanwhile, the wife of Cheenu's headmaster is attracted to Cheenu, but he does not reciprocate her feelings.

Viji's father Vedachalam, who was searching her through the police, releases a newspaper advertisement about his lost daughter. A co-passenger who had travelled with Cheenu and Viji from Madras to Ooty by train gives them a lead. Cheenu takes Viji to an Ayurvedic practitioner and leaves her there for a day's treatment. In his absence, the police come to his house searching for Viji. Finally, the police learn that Viji is getting treated at the doctor's place and reach there. Cheenu is unable to come as he is afraid of police action. The treatment goes through successfully. Viji regains her memory, but completely forgets about the period between her accident and recovery. From the doctor, Vedachalam learns that the person who had brought her there had been taking good care of their daughter; he withdraws his police complaint and they begin their journey to Madras with Viji.

After the police leave, Cheenu comes running after the car in which Viji is travelling. He follows them to the railway station and tries to gain Viji's attention, but she is unable to recognise him. Cheenu acts like a dancing monkey that Viji developed a liking for, but Viji, unable to comprehend, thinks he is insane and begging for food. Cheenu continues his futile attempts to gain her attention, and the train eventually leaves with Viji not recognising him. Cheenu, who was injured while chasing her car and trying to get her attention, walks away, heartbroken.

7am pirai tamil movie review

T he late Sridevi once said that her daughter Janhvi, now herself an actor, refused to talk to her for three days after she watched Sadma for the first time, as a child. “You were so mean to him,” she said.

It sounds like a cute, slightly silly story, but a rewatch of the 1983 movie, even today, can move one to tears of desperation, frustration and sadness — especially during the closing scenes, which are probably among the saddest in Hindi cinema.

The movie, directed, shot and written by Balu Mahendra, is a Hindi version of his own 1982 Tamil movie, Moondram Pirai , which had already picked up a slew of awards, including two National Awards (Best Actor for Kamal Haasan, Best Cinematography for Balu Mahendra) and five Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, including a Best Actress win for Sridevi.

Sadma , which saw Haasan and Sridevi reprise their roles, also garnered critical acclaim and awards. And it established Sridevi as a force to reckon with in Hindi cinema.

In fact, the film is a coming together of not just these three legends, but many more. The soundtrack is another star, with tunes by Ilaiyaraja (ably assisted by none other than A.R. Rahman), lyrics by Gulzar and the voices of Asha Bhosle, Suresh Wadkar and K.J. Yesudas.

Today, the movie finds a place on every best movie and must-watch list, and for good reason. Balu Mahendra was a complete filmmaker, who understood and actively worked on every aspect of all his movies, but Sadma , his first and finest foray into Hindi cinema will always be special. In the week of his birth anniversary, there could be no better film with which to celebrate him.

Not all loves can be labelled

Sadma tells the story of Nehalata (Sridevi), who has a car accident while driving back from the beach with her friends. When she regains consciousness, she doesn’t recognise her parents. The doctor explains that a shock or trauma (sadma) can cause this kind of amnesia, in which the patient only remembers things up to a certain age. Nehalata, a grown woman, has regressed to the mental age and memories of her six- or seven-year-old self.

While she is undergoing treatment, she is kidnapped and sold into a brothel, where she is assigned to Somu (Haasan), whose friend has dragged him there to get him to relax and have some fun. Somu is distinctly uncomfortable in the brothel, and more so when he realises that Nehalata, now called Reshmi, has the mind of a child and is clearly mentally unwell. He gleans from her that she was brought to the brothel by force, and wants to get her away from there. He requests permission to take her out for the day and instead boards a train and takes her to his home in the hills of Ramnagar, where he is a school teacher.

Here, in this idyll, Reshmi and Somu’s relationship deepens into something that is complicated and potentially problematic, given the circumstances, but also, extremely simple, given that it is built on nothing but pure love.

The heartbreak of a love that left as quickly as it came

Eventually, Somu takes Reshmi to a doctor who has a good reputation for treating cases such as this. While she is being treated, her parents, having filed a missing persons complaint, arrive in Ramnagar and find their daughter. She’s now cured, except that now, it’s the opposite. She cannot remember anything after the accident, not even Somu, whom she adored and who loved and took care of her.

The movie ends with Somu trying to catch her attention while she’s on a train bound for Bombay with her parents. He screams her name, except she doesn’t know she was ever called Reshmi. He acts like the dancing, jumping monkey she had once found so hilarious and made him imitate, but she just thinks he is a mad beggar on the railway platform and gives him some food before her train pulls out of the station. Somu, drenched and muddy from the rain, and with a broken leg from his race to the station, is left alone and heartbroken.

This film was a difficult tightrope to walk — for Sridevi, to be childlike without grating, and for Haasan to manage the delicate balance between his caregiving, father-figure role and his romantic feelings for her.

The idea of someone suddenly coming into one’s life and filling it with joy before leaving just as quickly was inspired by Balu Mahendra’s own life — he was in love with a much younger woman, actor Shoba, and they did get married, but it was short-lived as she committed suicide just two years later, at the age of 17.

That’s why Rishikesh Mukherjee, the then Jury Chairman of National Award Committee cried after seeing the Tamil version’s climax scenes acted by Kamal Haasan.

Last part was really heart breaking just watching the ending makes me cry and heart ache

First the differenciation of the mental state she was in by Sridevi was a class by any standards. As a youth who loves to be independent, as a girl with a shrunk mind and a graceful young lady she had given her best. She deserved the highest award, even better than Kamal. That in no way to belittle the contribution by him. And Ilayaraja, the Maestro, only needs assistance from his musicians in doing their part. In that way, yes ARR ably assisted him.

Sridevi deserved a national award too. Such a power packed performance nothing less than kamal.

Sridevi was hardly 18, 19 years old when she acted in this movie. She should have received National award, specially for the Tamil language performance.

The whole objective of this story is getting lot by a silly unverified and incorrect mention of ‘ably assisted by ARR’ . Please edit it immediately and apologize. Even ARR would slam it if he happens to see this. Idiotic reference!!

ARR has nothing to do with sadma other than being one more small musician part of Rajas troop, You can never compare or peer Raja’s music with anyone, he is the greater ever composer the world had been gifted with

Yes, mani garu you said 100percent correct, no one is like maestro IR in Indian cenima

Your mention of “….The soundtrack is another star, with tunes by Ilaiyaraja (ably assisted by none other than A.R. Rahman)” looks so absurd. ARR was just a musician on the Keys with all notes handwritten by Maestro Ilayaraja Sir himself . ARR, called as Dileep, was just a young little boy. Do not portray as though ARR was “ably assisted”. The music and the grandeur of it goes only to Maestro IR and of course all other musicians, where ARR was also part of them. This was ARR’s first movie on the Keys brought in by Maestro IR and then ARR worked with IR for over 500 films. Without IR, there is no AR ..and this is a fact., yes its 100percent correct., in indian cinema no one is similar to Maestro IR

Yes you are right, Ilayaraja is the master ever of Indian cinema music, 🌝but people forget to mention about the legendary actress Sridevi’s performance in this movie, she deserves the best actress award I don’t remember actually which actress betterment than Sridevi on that particular year

I was thinking the same.

Original version in Tamil is fabulous. Great actor kamal great director camera director music all top men under one roof made a history in Indian cinema.

Tamil original is fabulous. Great actor like kamal Hasan. Great camera and great music

Did you know? Moondram Pirai was produced by this banner!

Moondram Pirai (1982) starring Kamal Haasan, and the late Sridevi continues to be one of the cult classics of Indian cinema and little known facts about the movie garner interest among the Tamil audience even today. The late Balumahendra wrote, directed and served as the dop (director of photography) on Moondram Pirai; The movie fetched him and Kamal Haasan a National award each for best cinematography and acting.

Moondram Pira i's music composed by Ilaiyaraaja is among the most revisited to this date. But did you know that this cult film was produced by the Tamil production banner Sathya Jyothi Films? Sathya Jyothi Films made their entry into cinema with this film and continued to produce films through the late 80s and 90s.

Our first Film #MoondramPirai ♥️♥️ We take this moment to Thank #BaluMahendra , Ulaganayagan @ikamalhaasan , #Sridevi & maestro @ilaiyaraaja for delivering this timeless cult classic for US 👑🙏 https://t.co/p0J7cS4wbp — Sathya Jyothi Films (@SathyaJyothi) February 22, 2023

In the early 2000s, they had produced well recognized movies such as Parthiban Kanavu (2003), Em Magan (2006) and Jayamkondan (2008). Sathya Jyothi Films have been going non-stop since Dhanush's Thodari in 2016, and have now become a well recognized banner among Tamil cine audience.

Besides Dhanush ( Thodari , Pattas and the upcoming Captain Miller ), the banner is also known for frequently collaborating with  actor Ajith Kumar ( Vivegam, Viswasam and the upcoming AK 62 ).
