Mark and return an assignment

This article is for teachers.

In Classroom, you can give a numeric mark, leave comment-only feedback or do both. You can also return assignments without marks.

You can mark and return work from:

  • The Student work page.
  • The Classroom marking tool.
  • The Marks page.

For instructions on the Marks page, go to View or update your student record .

For practice sets, learn how to mark a practice set assignment .

You can download marks for one assignment or for all assignments in a class.

Display assignments and import quiz marks

Before viewing a student's assignment, you can see the status of student work, and the number of students in each category.

Go to classroom.google.com  and click Sign in.

Sign in with your Google Account. For example,  [email protected] or [email protected] .  Learn more .

  • Click the class.
  • At the top, click Classwork .
  • Select the assignment to display.
  • Tip: You can only get to the Student work page when the number isn't '0' for both 'Turned in' and 'Assigned'.
  • Assigned – Work that students have to hand in, including missing or unsubmitted work
  • Handed in – Work that students have handed in
  • Marked – Marked work that you've returned
  • Returned – Unmarked (non-marked) work that you've returned
  • (Optional) To see the students in a category, click Turned in , Assigned , Marked or Returned .
  • To check a student's submission, click on the assignment thumbnail.
  • At the top right, click Import marks .
  • Click Import to confirm. The marks autofill next to the students' names. Note: Importing marks overwrites any marks already entered.
  • (Optional) To return marks, next to each student whose mark you want to return, tick the box and click Return . Students can see their mark in Classroom and Forms.

Enter, review or change marks

  • Red – Missing work.
  • Green – Handed in work or draft mark.
  • Black – Returned work.
  • Click the Student work tab.

The default marking scale is numerical based on the total points of the assignment. The expanded marking scales option is available for the Education Plus and Teaching and Learning Upgrade editions. You can align Classroom marking to your school's system whether:

  • Alphabetical, for example letter marks (A to F) or proficiency (unsatisfactory to excellent)
  • For example, four-point scales.
  • For example, emojis.

Marking scales features work with:

  • Average mark calculation
  • SIS integration
  • Practice sets and forms auto-marking

You can enter a mark either for the number of points or, if you have marking scales set up, based on the levels on the marking scale. For example, if you have letter marks set up in your class and you assign a 10-point assignment, under 'Mark', you can:

  • Select Good 8/10 from the drop-down menu
  • You and your co-teachers can find all marks in both points value and the level that it corresponds to.

A student can find both the points value and the level it corresponds to if a mark is returned.

  • Next to the student's name, enter the mark. The mark saves automatically.
  • Enter marks for any other students.

You can enter marks and personalise your students' feedback with the Classroom marking tool.

  • Go to classroom.google.com .
  • Optional: Under the classwork filter, select a marking period. Learn how to create or edit marking periods .
  • Next to the student's name, and under the relevant assignment, enter the mark.
  • The mark saves as a draft.
  • Select Good 8/10 from the drop-down menu.

More

  • If a mark is returned, a student can find both the points value and the level that it corresponds to.
  • Optional: Enter marks for any other students and assignments.

Tip: You can return assignments without a mark.

  • On the left, click a student's name.
  • Click See history .
  • Next to a student's name, click the mark that you want to change.
  • Enter a new number. The new mark saves automatically.

Return work or download marks

Students can't edit any files attached to an assignment until you return it. When you return work, students get notifications if they're turned on. You can return work, with or without a mark, to one or more students at a time.

You can start with the default marking scale options, or create your own marking scale.

Managing online marking for digital exams

Marking digital exams is an important stage in the exams process, often involving multiple markers and student submissions made at different times. This guide provides some planning suggestions and considerations to support the marking processes.

Using LMS Gradebook features, you can create a workflow for marking that suits your subject’s needs and the processes and protocols in your department or school. The following tips are general, and we encourage you to contact Learning Environments if you would like to speak to someone about the particulars of your marking scenarios.

  • Only one marker should interact with an individual student’s submission in SpeedGrader or mark that submission through Gradebook at the same time.
  • Some exam assignments use external tools such as Gradescope or Cadmus, marking will occur within these tools and be passed back to the LMS Gradebook on a specified date.
  • Alternate Exam Arrangements (AEA) are applied for some students, so submission times may vary according to time extensions or different time windows for the exam.
  • In some subjects, there are multiple versions of an exam assignment allocated to different students. Each assignment appears in a separate column in the gradebook.

Before marking

Before beginning marking, hide the marks from students to ensure that some students don't receive their marks before others, and that you are able to finalise and moderate marking as needed before they are released.

To ensure that your marking is hidden from students, check that the 'grade posting policy' is set to manual before you begin marking. You can do this globally for the whole Gradebook by clicking on the settings icon on the top right of the Gradebook.

Grade posting policy (global) screenshot

Alternately, you can set the grade posting policy for an individual assessment column by clicking on the 3 dots at the top of that column.

Grade posting policy screenshot from Canvas

Setting the grade posting policy to manual ensures that grades are not automatically posted to students as you input them.

See the Grade Posting Policy guide for more information.

One marker per submission

When marking in teams, it is necessary to make sure that only one marker is accessing an individual student's submission at any time. If more than one marker is accessing one student's submission at the same time, your marks and annotations can be lost .

To mark in teams, first decide who will mark which students at any particular time. This could mean that one marker is allocated a particular tutorial group, or specific students within the cohort. Once each marker has been allocated their students, they can use the LMS Gradebook filter settings to view only the students they need to mark. In the case of a tutorial group, the marker can use the Filter option to select the particular tutorial.

Gradebook filters screenshot

Marking by sections

You are able to filter the Gradebook based on Sections and allocate given markers to a Section to ensure only one person is viewing one student. Sections for tutorial groups etc are automatically created in your subject. More about creating sections of students that suit your marking needs .

Marking using the search box

In the case of marking particular students, markers can use the Search Students box in the Gradebook to search for the relevant student name.

Gradebook search screenshot

Marking by question

If you have a marking plan where multiple markers are each assigned specific questions within the same assessment to mark, the best way to manage this is to determine time periods that each marker will be accessing papers. This will avoid two or more markers accessing the same submission at the same time.

Sorting columns in Gradebook

During the marking process, it may be necessary to check the spread of grades, or which students have or have not submitted. To make this easier, you can use the 'sort' functionality on each column. You can sort the column so that it shows grades high to low and vice versa, or you can sort the column so that it shows students with no mark/submission.

Gradebook sort screenshot

Alternative Exam Arrangements (AEA) and multiple exam assignments

It is important to be aware of any varied timings in the exam events when planning marking. Some students will have time extensions for an exam, or take the exam at a different time, so submissions may occur over an extended period.  A broad summary of time variations is displayed with each assignment, and details can be reviewed by clicking Edit on the assignment.

Time extensions can be viewed in the exam assignment

In some subjects, there may be multiple exam assignments created and allocated to different students, within the main exam period or for special or supplementary exams.  Each assignment will be a separate column in the gradebook.  If multiple exam assignments have been created check that these marks are correctly included in final calculations.

Preparing final marks

Remember that not all marks that you see in Gradebook contribute to the final grade for a student. Go to the Assignments area of your LMS subject and check the Assignment groups to review which assessments contribute what percentage to students' final mark.

Assignment groups screenshot

Working offline

The LMS Gradebook can be downloaded and opened in to Excel, allowing you to review or work with your grades offline. Simply click the Actions menu and select Export .

You can also import marks to Gradebook for assessments that occurred offline and did not require a student submission.

There may already be an exam assignment shell for this purpose or create an assignment with the setting  No Submission , so that a column is created in Gradebook. Publish the assignment, then export the Gradebook, enter the marks into the correct assignment column in the spreadsheet then import the marks into the Gradebook.

>To import, click the Import button at the top of the page.  There is an interim checking step which shows intended changes before they are made.

Gradebook export screenshot

Using Gradebook history overview

The Grade history overview in Gradebook can be useful if you ever need to see who has marked a particular student, or how marks have changed for a student over time. The Grade history overview shows all actions by all staff members in the Gradebook, allowing you to backtrack and revert to earlier grades if discrepancies arise.

To access the Gradebook history, click the Gradebook menu on the top left, then select Gradebook History .

Gradebook history setting screenshot

Using the notes column

The notes column in Gradebook allows you to add free form text against each student. This may be useful if you need to flag students with special circumstances for their assessments, such as a student who is exempt from a particular assessment or has an extension. To use the notes field, click View on the top left of the Gradebook, then Notes .

GradeMark for online marking of assignments

students at computer

Keywords: Turnitin, GradeMark, efficiency.

Faculty: Education

Lecturer and researcher Donna Rooney initially started using Turnitin when she was a casual tutor for the Bachelor of Adult Education and the Bachelor of Arts in Organisational Learning. She had previously been copying and pasting phrases into Google that she thought might have been plagiarised, but this process was time-consuming. She found that Turnitin made originality checks relatively straightforward. Donna's marking workload increased considerably when she began teaching full-time, resulting in as many as 290 submissions to mark in the final week of session. To cope with the larger number of assignments, Donna began to use Turnitin for marking as well as monitoring for plagiarism. Donna felt that the time she took in setting up Turnitin for her classes paid off, especially as she improved gradually by using the program. She found that while her colleagues were still struggling with marking, she was getting incrementally faster and her students were still getting the feedback they needed to get better at the task for their next assignment.

Assessment activity

Benefits for staff and students, hints and advice.

  • The combination of a marked-up paper, rubric and voice comments are what students really appreciate.
  • When marking up the student paper use a variety of coloured highlighters, so that students get a clear picture of how to improve their work.
  • Give students a lot of detailed feedback on their first assessment task and then reduce the number of comments until their final assessment task has a few general observations.
  • Think of the time you put in setting up the system, like developing criteria, as an investment that pays off at the end just as other people start pulling their hair out under the pressure of end-of-session marking.

Online assignments - submission and marking options

14 august 2015, assessing communication skills.

Students in Dr David MacDonald's Physiotherapy course conduct an interview to demonstrate their verbal and non-verbal communication skills, as well as their interview and interpersonal skills. Students record the interview in a video and submit it using UQ's video server Kaltura.

David finds that video submission assignments allow for the ideal combination of formative and summative assessment. Students have the opportunity to complete multiple takes to produce their best performance for submission for evaluation. David shares his views on the benefits of video assignments and tips for managing them. Watch Video (4:28)

New Turnitin features

Turnitin, the online assignment submission and marking software, now has two new features. The upload limit for files has been increased from 20mb to 40mb. Staff can also use the Email non-submitters  feature to send a reminder email to all students in their course that have not submitted an assignment. Refer to the Email non-submitters guide for step-by-step instructions.

New Blackboard assignment tool features

The Assignment tool is an alternative to Turnitin for online assignment submission and marking, and it is particularly useful for group assignments. The new features allow course coordinators to assign the marking of specific assignments to individual tutors and to enable anonymous marking. A new Bb Grader iPad app is also available for online marking. For further information refer to the Blackboard Assignment tool  guide.

New Groups tool feature

The Groups tool can be used to set up self-enrol or manually enrolled student project groups. The new feature allows course coordinators to view and edit lists of students and their groups all on the one page. Refer to the  group enrolments  guide for step-by-step instructions.

Online assignment submission and marking options

There are a variety of online assignment submission and marking options available at UQ to cater for different assignment types:

Individual assignments

Turnitin is the most popular choice for individual text-based (Word, PDF and PowerPoint) assignments. The online marking function allows you to annotate assignments, use comment banks, include a voice comment and give feedback using a rubric. There is also an iPad app available for off-line marking.

Turnitin also includes a text matching (plagiarism check) function that reports on any text matches with web content, previously submitted assignments and journals. For further information refer to the Turnitin guide.

View video case studies on UQ staff who have successfully implemented Turnitin assignments: Brian McNamara , Dr Andrew Allsebrook , Dr Pauline Ford , Dr Judith Seaboyer and Dr Glyn Thomas .

Group assignments

Using the Blackboard Group and Assignment tool in combination allows you to set up group project submission links. Any student in the group can submit the assignment and all members automatically receive the assignment results and feedback. The online marking function allows you to annotate assignments and give feedback using a rubric. For further information refer to the Groups and Assignment tool guides.

View the video case study on how Dr Bryan Morgan  successfully implemented Blackboard group assignments.

Alternatively if text matching (plagiarism check) or the use of comment banks is required, Turnitin  can also be used for group assignment. This has the disadvantage that marks and feedback are not available automatically to all group members.

Video assignments

Kaltura , UQ's video server can be used by students to submit video assignments. You can also set up submission links using the Blackboard Assignment tool which allows you to use the online marking function to give comments and feedback using a rubric.

For further information refer to the Video and Audio upload and Assignment tool guides.

View the video case studies on UQ staff who have successfully implemented video assignments: Jacqueline Bond , Dr Karen Cheney and Dr David MacDonald .

Web-based assignments

The Blackboard Assignment tool can be used if you require students to submit links to web-based products such as websites, Prezzies and VoiceThreads. The online marking function can be used to give comments and feedback using a rubric. For further information refer to the Assignment tool guide.

Reflection assignments

The Blogs or Journals tool allows students to submit regular reflections that incorporate multimedia elements. Blog assignments are public and can be viewed and commented on by all course members. Journals are private and can only be viewed by course staff. Staff can use the online marking panel to give comments and feedback using a rubric. For further information refer to the Blogs and Journals  guide.

View the video case studies on UQ staff who have successfully implemented blog assignments: Dr Rebecca Laws and Dr Chris Campbell .

Oral presentations and performance based assignments

There are two choices if you need to mark assignments such as oral presentations or performances that do not require a file submission.

Option one is to set up a Turnitin non-submission assignment , this option allows you to use Turnitin's marking tool GradeMark. Refer to the Create a Turnitin assignment (no file submission) and Mark no file submission assignments guides for step-by-step instructions.

Option two is to set up Grade Centre column and attach a rubric for feedback. Refer to the Create a column and Enter marks using a rubric  guides for step-by-step instructions.

Online assignment submission instructions for students

Guides for students on how to submit and view feedback from Turnitin, Blackboard, Blogs and Journals and Kaltura video assignments are available from Ask I.T. It is recommended that you include a link to the relevant guide in your assignment instructions to students.

Announcement emails

The recent Learn.UQ upgrade changed the behaviour of Announcements and some other system based emails. They will now have [email protected] as the 'From' address. Student replies to announcement emails will still be sent to the staff member who posted the announcement as their address is contained within the reply-to field If you need to communicate with students and have it  show up as coming from yourself, you will need to use the Email tool.

How to Submit IGNOU Assignment for TEE June & Dec 2024?

IGNOU Assignment Submission Methods 2024 – As per the regular schedule of the IGNOU Assignment submission, the university going to accept the IGNOU Assignment for the Term-end examination June 2024 till 15th May 2024 so the students can submit their assignments latest by 15th May 2024 to get eligible to appear in the upcoming TEE June 2024 . It is also noted that the given last date is subject to change or extension that should not be treated as the final date of submission.

The university may extend the assignment submission date so candidates have to wait for the official announcement from IGNOU after they missed the due date. The students now can also submit their assignments online if they are not able to visit their respective centers.

So, now there are three different ways how the students can submit the assignments based on their convenience.

How To Submit IGNOU Assignment?

  • IGNOU Assignment 2023 (Last Date)
  • IGNOU Assignment Status 2023 (UPDATED)
  • IGNOU Project 2023 (Online Submission)

Through Offline Mode

This is the usual way through which the students usually submit the assignments. The students have to finish answering the questions of the assignments and then submit them to the study center. While preparing the assignments, you should make sure that the very first page of the assignment should have all the necessary details.

  • The name of the student
  • Enrolment number
  • Program and Code code
  • Name, Code, and address of the study center where you are submitting the assignment
  • Mobile number and email address of the student
  • IGNOU Assignment Front Page (PDF)
  • IGNOU Study Centre List

If you are submitting the assignments directly through offline mode, the person at the study center will offer you a receipt that you need to keep safe till the result is not declared.

Through Online Mode

For students who are not able to visit the study center to submit the assignments can also submit them online now by following any of these two methods. It is noted that both of the methods are subject to availability at the respective regional centre.

Google Form

The very first method is that of Google Forms. The students can visit the respective regional portals of IGNOU and then submit the assignments. You can follow the below steps for the successful submission of assignments through Google Form.

Also Read: IGNOU Regional Centre Official Sites

Step – 1 – First of all, have a look on the list of IGNOU Regional Centres at the Official Website of IGNOU and go to your RC website.

Step – 2 – On the homepage of RC’s official page, go to the section of News and Events.

Step – 3 – You should get the option of Assignment Guidelines or Assignment Submission on which you have to click.

Step – 4 – As you click on the link, the Google form will get open in the browser.

Step – 5 – Now now start filling the form with proper details such as your name, enrolment number, subject code, and others.

Step – 6 – Carefully upload the scanned copy of your assignment and submit the form.

Instructions to Follow

While you are submitting the assignments through Google Form, make sure that you follow these important instructions.

  • You have to fill a new form for each subject.
  • Make sure that you are uploading the assignment files correctly.
  • You need to scan the handwritten copies of the assignments and upload them.
  • The scanned copy of assignments should not be more than 100MB.
  • You should only submit the PDF format of the scanned copy.
  • Though you will be entering the basic details in the Google Form, it is also a great idea to mention the same details on your assignment copy also.
  • The option of submitting the assignments through Google Forms will be available only when the quota of email submission is over.

Through Email Address

Though IGNOU has started the option of submitting the assignments through Google Forms, it will be not available in all the regional centers. The option of Google Forms will be only applicable if the email quota of a regional center is over and they are not more able to receive assignment emails from the students.

Here is the method that you need to follow to submit your assignments through email.

Step – 1 – Mention all the important details on the front page of your assignment that you would do in the case of offline submissions such as name, subject name and code, program and course code, study center name and code, contact details, and others.

Step – 2 – Scan your handwritten assignment copy and get it in PDF format. Each subject assignment should be in each PDF copy.

Step – 3 – Find out the email address of your regional center from Google in the same way how you search for the regional center portal link.

Step – 4 – In the body of the email, provide all the details in a listicle format that you have mentioned on the front page of your assignments.

Step – 5 – Now attach the PDF formats of your assignments and send the email to the respective regional center email address.

After you have sent the email, you should receive an acknowledgment. It may take a few hours to get this acknowledgment email. But if you have still not received it, you should check whether the regional portal has shared the link for Google Forms or not and should upload the assignments there too.

It is also noted that the many of the regional centre of IGNOU is not sending any confirmation or acknowledgment after the submission of IGNOU Assignments so you don’t need to worry about it instead of keep checking the status of your assignments to get the result.

How to Submit IGNOU Assignments Online

How to Submit IGNOU Assignment 2024 Online:  IGNOU assignments are an important part of the final grade card. They are usually submitted at the end of each semester before the conduct of the Term End Examination (TEE) which is held twice a year. While IGNOU assignments can be submitted offline as well, lakhs of students find submitting assignments online more convenient. However, online submissions can be time-consuming and lead to non-updation of marks if done incorrectly. Submitting the IGNOU assignments online properly will ensure that students are evaluated properly for each semester and are also eligible to appear for the upcoming TEE. Find out how to submit IGNOU assignments online for TEE June and December 2024 below.

Explore a step-by-step guide to submit the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) assignment 2024 online below to avoid discrepancies. This will include three ways: through the official website, email to the regional centre and Google Form.

Submit IGNOU Assignments Through Website

  • Visit the official website of IGNOU: ignou.ac.in
  • Click on the 'Student Zone' link in the top menu.
  • The student must log in with their enrollment number and password.
  • Click on the 'Assignments' tab.
  • Click on the 'Submit Assignment' link.
  • Select the assignment code and session for which you want to submit the assignment.
  • Upload a scanned copy of your assignment in PDF format.
  • Click on the 'Submit' button.

Submit IGNOU Assignments Through Google Form

Below are the steps that students can follow if they wish to submit IGNOU assignments online through the Google form link:

  • Click on the link provided dedicated to your regional centre, and it will automatically open in your default browser.
  • Fill in all the required information correctly, such as Name, enrollment number, subject code, subject name, course name, course year, section, etc.
  • Upload your assignment in PDF format.
  • After uploading, check all the details once again.
  • After checking, click on submit
  • If you want a copy of the response, click on the 'send a response on the mail' option if available.

Submit IGNOU Assignments through Email (If Available)

Students also have the option to submit their assignments through email, but this option is not available for all assignments. It depends on the faculty and how they want their assignments. Hence, one must make sure that submitting IGNOU assignments through email is an option and that they have the correct email ID.

Below are the points to remember before submitting IGNOU assignment online. Students must follow all the points to avoid rejection of their assignment.

  • IGNOU only accepts handwritten assignments; no typed assignments are allowed.
  • The document should be in the form of a PDF.
  • The scanned document should be clearly visible, avoiding submitting blurry images. If students submit blurred PDF files, they might lose marks.
  • The maximum size of the document should not exceed 100 MB.
  • The file should be saved under your name.
  • Don't submit the assignment more than once.
  • If the student has submitted a hard copy to the institution, then online submission is not required.
  • If you are facing any issues while submitting the assignment online, students can also submit a hard copy IGNOU assignment offline at the institution.
  • While submitting the assignment, enter only your email ID.
  • Students should only submit their assignments and not any other project.
  • Students should avoid locked PDFs i.e. without any password. If the file is locked or protected with the password, it will be rejected.

How Many Times Can You Submit IGNOU Assignments in a Year?

There are two systems of programs at IGNOU: semester and year. If you are taking exams twice a year, like for courses like BCA, MCA, MBA, B.Com, and M.Co, then you are in a semester program. On the other hand, if you appear in exams only once a year, then you are in an annual program. So, if your course is annual, you must submit assignments once a year, and if your program is semester-based, you must submit assignments twice a year. You must log into your admissions portal to know if your program is full-year or half-year.

IGNOU will always mention the deadline by which sstudents should submit their assignments. In general, the deadline is April for the June session and October for the December TEE. Students should check the IGNOU website for the latest information on assignment submission deadlines.

The following are the criteria on which assignments are evaluated by the faculties. Students must follow all the criteria to achieve high marks in the assignments submitted online or offline.

  • Content: The faculty will assess the content of the assignment to ensure that it is accurate, comprehensive, and relevant to the topic of the assignment.
  • Structure: The faculty will assess the structure of the assignment to ensure that it is well-organized and easy to follow.
  • Grammar and spelling: The tutor will assess the grammar and spelling of the assignment to ensure that it is free of errors.
  • Presentation: The faculty will assess the presentation of the assignment to ensure that it is neat and well-formatted.
  • Originality: The faculty will check the originality of the assignment to ensure that it is not plagiarized.

No, once a student has submitted the assignment they can't re-submit the same assignment again.

IGNOU Assignment Guidelines 2023-24

Submitting assignments is a critical aspect of your studies at IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University), and adhering to the correct guidelines is essential to facilitate a hassle-free evaluation process. This article provides a comprehensive guide on the proper procedure for submitting IGNOU assignments specifically tailored to students. Whether you’re a newcomer or an experienced learner, following these IGNOU assignment guidelines will enhance the efficiency of the assignment submission and evaluation process.

Guidelines for Submitting IGNOU Assignments

  • Preparing the Front Page

The first step in submitting an assignment at IGNOU is to create a well-structured front page. This is the document that introduces your assignment and provides vital information to your instructors. It should contain the following details:

  • Enrollment Number
  • Course Title
  • Assignment Number
  • Date of Submission/Posting

Ensuring that all these details are accurate and complete is crucial for proper identification and assessment of your work.

  • Use A4 Size Paper

Ensure that your response is neatly organized on A4 size paper. This standard paper size not only provides ample space for your answers but also aligns with the formatting requirements of IGNOU.

  • Leave Margins

Leaving a 1-1½ inch margin on the left side of the paper is essential. This space allows instructors to add comments and feedback, ensuring that your assignment is evaluated effectively.

  • Maintain Adequate Spacing

To enhance readability, leave at least four lines of space between each answer. This practice helps instructors easily distinguish between different sections of your assignment.

  • Separate Assignments

At IGNOU, each assignment should be submitted separately. This separation streamlines the evaluation process and ensures that each assignment receives the attention it deserves.

  • Handwriting Matters

It’s crucial to write your assignments in your own handwriting. This practice not only showcases your personal commitment but also helps distinguish your work from others’.

  • Use Your Own Words

When answering questions, always use your own words. Avoid copying directly from the course materials or other sources. Being precise in your responses is key to conveying your understanding effectively.

  • Say No to Copying

Plagiarism is a serious offense in academics. Never copy from another student, as it can lead to returned assignments or reduced marks. Maintain the integrity of your work.

  • Add Your Signature

A personal touch to your assignment is adding your signature at the end. This serves as confirmation that the work is your own and authenticates your submission.

  • Keep a Copy

Always retain a copy of your assignment for your records. This precautionary measure ensures that you have a backup in case the original gets misplaced.

  • Acknowledgment Form

Ensure that you attach the acknowledgment form provided by IGNOU along with your assignment. This is a critical document that signifies the submission of your assignment.

  • Adhere to Submission Dates

Respect the submission date indicated in your IGNOU assignment. Late submissions might not be accepted, and it could adversely affect your grades.

  • Collect Evaluated Assignments

In case you do not receive your evaluated assignment within a month of submission, make arrangements to collect it personally from the IGNOU study center. This step ensures that you can review the feedback provided by your instructor.

  • Change in Program Study Center

If you have requested a change in the program study center at IGNOU, continue submitting your assignment to your original center until the change is officially processed.

Properly submitting assignments is a fundamental aspect of your studies at IGNOU. These IGNOU assignment guidelines 2023-24 are designed to streamline the submission process, making it efficient for both students and instructors. By following these steps, you can ensure that your assignments are evaluated accurately and that you receive the credit you deserve for your hard work and dedication in your IGNOU courses.

New Data Reveal How Many Students Are Using AI to Cheat

assignment marks upload online

  • Share article

AI-fueled cheating—and how to stop students from doing it—has become a major concern for educators.

But how prevalent is it? Newly released data from a popular plagiarism-detection company is shedding some light on the problem.

And it may not be as bad as educators think it is.

Of the more than 200 million writing assignments reviewed by Turnitin’s AI detection tool over the past year, some AI use was detected in about 1 out of 10 assignments, while only 3 out of every 100 assignments were generated mostly by AI.

These numbers have not changed much from when Turnitin released data in August of 2023 about the first three months of the use of its detection tool, said the company’s chief product officer, Annie Chechitelli.

“We hit a steady state, and it hasn’t changed dramatically since then,” she said. “There are students who are leaning on AI too much. But it’s not pervasive. It wasn’t this, ‘the sky is falling.’”

The fact that the number of students using AI to complete their schoolwork hasn’t skyrocketed in the past year dovetails with survey findings from Stanford University that were released in December. Researchers there polled students in 40 different high schools and found that the percentage of students who admitted to cheating has remained flat since the advent of ChatGPT and other readily available generative AI tools. For years before the release of ChatGPT, between 60 and 70 percent of students admitted to cheating, and that remained the same in the 2023 surveys, the researchers said.

Turnitin’s latest data release shows that in 11 percent of assignments run through its AI detection tool that at least 20 percent of each assignment had evidence of AI use in the writing. In 3 percent of the assignments, each assignment was made up of 80 percent or more of AI writing, which tracks closely with what the company was seeing just 3 months after it launched its AI detection tool .

Experts warn against fixating on cheating and plagiarism

However, a separate survey of educators has found that AI detection tools are becoming more popular with teachers, a trend that worries some experts.

The survey of middle and high school teachers by the Center for Democracy and Technology, a nonprofit focused on technology policy and consumer rights, found that 68 percent have used an AI detection tool, up substantially from the previous year. Teachers also reported in the same survey that students are increasingly getting in trouble for using AI to complete assignments. In the 2023-24 school year, 63 percent of teachers said students had gotten in trouble for being accused of using generative AI in their schoolwork, up from 48 percent last school year.

Despite scant evidence that AI is fueling a wave in cheating, half of teachers reported in the Center for Democracy and Technology survey that generative AI has made them more distrustful that their students are turning in original work.

Some experts warn that fixating on plagiarism and cheating is the wrong focus.

This creates an environment where students are afraid to talk with their teachers about AI tools because they might get in trouble, said Tara Nattrass, the managing director of innovation and strategy at ISTE+ASCD, a nonprofit that offers content and professional development on educational technology and curriculum.

“We need to reframe the conversation and engage with students around the ways in which AI can support them in their learning and the ways in which it may be detrimental to their learning,” she said in an email to Education Week. “We want students to know that activities like using AI to write essays and pass them off as their own is harmful to their learning while using AI to break down difficult topics to strengthen understanding can help them in their learning.”

Shift the focus to teaching AI literacy, crafting better policies

Students said in the Stanford survey that is generally how they think AI should be used: as an aid to understanding concepts rather than a fancy plagiarism tool.

Nattrass said schools should be teaching AI literacy while including students in drafting clear AI guidelines.

Nattrass also recommends against schools using AI detection tools. They are too unreliable to authenticate students’ work, she said, and false positives can be devastating to individual students and breed a larger environment of mistrust. Some research has found that AI detection tools are especially weak at identifying the original writing of English learners from AI-driven prose.

“Students are using AI and will continue to do so with or without educator guidance,” Nattrass said. “Teaching students about safe and ethical AI use is a part of our responsibility to help them become contributing digital citizens.”

AI detection software actually uses AI to function: these tools are trained on large amounts of machine- and human-created writing so that the software can ideally recognize differences between the two.

Turnitin claims that its AI detector is 99 percent accurate at determining whether a document was written with AI, specifically ChatGPT, as long as the document was composed with at least 20 percent of AI writing, according to the company’s website.

Chechitelli pointed out that no detector or test—whether it’s a fire alarm or medical test—is 100 percent accurate.

While she said teachers should not rely solely on AI detectors to determine if a student is using AI to cheat, she makes the case that detection tools can provide teachers with valuable data.

“It is not definitive proof,” she said. “It’s a signal that taken with other signals can be used to start a conversation with a student.”

As educators become more comfortable with generative AI, Chechitelli said she predicts the focus will shift from detection to transparency: how should students cite or communicate the ways they’ve used AI? When should educators encourage students to use AI in assignments? And do schools have clear policies around AI use and what, exactly, constitutes plagiarism or cheating?

“What the feedback we’re hearing now from students is: ‘I’m gonna use it. I would love a little bit more guidance on how and when so I don’t get in trouble,” but still use it to learn, Chechitelli said.
